An Anonymous Flier (Pashkevil) In Brooklyn
By: The Jewish Press Editorial Board
Wednesday, February 22, 2006

It was doubtless inadvertent, but the author of the flier makes our point. Thus, the flier recites that "this mailing should not have been necessary," inasmuch as the target and his employer were warned in advance that if the individual either resigned or was fired, "th[e] mailing would be stopped." And on the Internet, the author has declared to one and all that he is about to "uncover" others if they do not accede to his demands. Plainly, this individual is engaged in an effort to fashion a weapon with which to impose his will on Klal Yisrael.

An anonymously written flier mailed recently to many Jewish homes in Brooklyn, containing lurid accusations of improper conduct against an individual in our community and railing against his employer for not firing him, should be taken as a serious warning of a cancer growing in our midst. The flier not only offers no substantiation of the charges themselves, but also reports uncorroborated – and, it turns out, vigorously denied – comments from the employer, which the flier’s unknown author offers as proof of a cover-up.

The mere circulation of the document has caused some, albeit limited, discussion as to the culpability of both the accused individual and the employer – this despite the lack of any evidence or the possibility of any follow-up with the accuser. But if even one person takes this sort of thing seriously, there is cause for concern. Compounding the problem is that the purveyor of this material seems fully at home with the Internet and has spread it anonymously on that medium as well, guaranteeing that it will be seen by all that many more people, both within and without the Jewish community.

Anonymous accusers effectively destroying their targets’ reputations, even before the truthfulness of the accusations are ascertained, cannot be the way of Klal Yisrael – and indeed has never been. Certainly it accords neither with halacha nor with common sense. It is precisely for this reason that for millennia we have invariably insisted that those making claims against another take the accused to a bet din in order to determine the facts and, if necessary, the halacha.

On another level, it is hardly engaging in hyperbole to suggest that if the notion takes root that an anonymous purveyor of unsubstantiated charges can get peoples’ tongues wagging, then none of us can count ourselves safe. It will enable anyone to exercise devastating power at any time and under any circumstances simply by choosing to do so, for whatever motive.

But it is not the excesses of one individual that are of primary concern. As a general proposition, before we even begin thinking about anyone’s having gone astray, we must have more to go on than mere innuendo and accusation flung about by nameless, faceless sources. It is incumbent upon each of us to resolve to give no credence to unproven charges and to urge their being discredited on a community-wide basis. That’s something that certainly should apply to this particular anonymous accuser.

We would also remind readers that President Bush recently signed into law a statute making it illegal for any person to use the Internet to post anonymous accusations designed to inflict pain and suffering on others. In this instance the anonymous accuser should be aware that if identified, he runs the risk of fine and imprisonment for violation of a federal statute.

I did NOT hear you voice your opinion when it came to shmearing Rabbi Nosson Slifkin
who is ruined as well as his fammily, for life, because of unsubstatiated accusation and by our *so called choshuva BIG gedolim*
There are plenty of Genuine gedolim who were not on those signed papers as i am sure you are aware of
Did you voice your opinion there too? if yes show it too us and if not then shut your FAT trap.

Wow, it is shocking that The Jewish Press finally got an issue right!

FInally someone called a spade a spade, and a mesumad a mushumad, and an apikores such as UOJ and apikores.

THEY SAID WHAT HAD TO BE SAID, FOR A CHANGE.

It is rare that they are on the correct side of an issue, but they must get credit for saying what this is: a smear campaign.

kudos to the Jeiwsh Press and down with UOJ and those of his ilk

The fact that the JP sees fit to give public exposure to this blog is clear evidence that UOJ is having a major impact and that feathers have been ruffled. Good, Very Good.

Jason Maoz, and your predecessor, Steve Walz and the Klasses; where have you been all of these years on this issue of sex predators in our midst?

Answer: Nowhere.

You paid lip-service (pardon the pun) by running an Op-Ed article on this issue several weeks ago by Elliot Pasik, ESQ. Very little, very late. Your current editorial fulminations against UOJ and this blog would carry a lot more weight if you had been more front and center on this issue from the get-go.

Still time to repent, Jason.

If not go back to your weekly Overview column and diss The New York Times. No one could care less. They are what they are and and still have the best stock pages, which is all our chevra care about anyway.

In this weeks parsha the Torah teaches us;

“Vichee Yuzid Ish Al Rayahoo Lhurgi B’urmah, Maim Mizbichi Teekuchenu Lumoos.”

The point of “Maim Mizbichee,” is that even if he is a Cohen doing the Avodah he is not Putoor for punishment for his sins. No matter how nice, ehrlich, choshuv and capable he may appear to be, and no matter how distinguished the institution that employs him, he must still face justice. As the Gemara says;

“Yeekoiv Hadin Es Hahor.”

Nor does Halacha recognize a time limitation which would allow the passage of time to blunt the impact of these issues.

The vilification of accusers by the accused is nothing new.

“Hereesem Ben Pooti Zeh Shpeetaim Avi Eemoi Agalim Laavodah Zorah.”

This is what the Bnai Shimon said about Pinchas after he killed Zimri. However, Pinchus’ Mesiras Nefesh was rewarded by Hashem. Chur was also killed by the Eirev Rav for being Moichah by the Maaseh Ho’egel. Hashem rewarded him by making his grandson Betzalel the Boneh Hamishkan. It is clear that true Avodas Hashem can only take place after there has been Mesiras Nfesh to cleanse Klal Yisroel from Avairos.

The Zohar states that in the days of Ikvasa Demeshicha the Eeirav Rav will be in leadership positions and will terribly oppress the rest of Klal Yisroel. It states further that they will build Butai Kenasiyos and Butai Midrushos and use the Sefer Torah itself as their Avodah Zarah. When we see agents of a Torah instution, rather than seeking the truth or justice, engaging in vindictive and vicious conduct, seeking to destroy more lives, attempting to sully the victims and bury the truth; we understand what the Zohar is talking about.

“Uz Nidbiroo Yiraai Hashem Ish El Rayaahoo Vayakshev Hashem Vayishma.”

Anybody who has true Yiraas Shomayim in his heart needs to step back and ask themselves “Haker Nu Limee Hochosemes Ulimee Hapseelim,” who is right and who is wrong. The victims, or the aggressor and his protectors. The sounds we are hearing today are the “Kol Dimai Acheecha Tzoakim Ailai Min Haadamah.”

Rather than engaging in unseemly attempts to silence these voices, we should unite to confront this problem head on. These voices will not be stilled and will not go away.

As Albert Einstein stated:

"Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions."

Thus, the Jewish Press excoriates the methods used to expose a child molester while remaining silent about the underlying issue.

Will the Jewish Press have anything to say after Kolko is proven guilty?

Time will tell.

The case of Daniel Levin (and the other victims of Ephraim Bryks) really illustrates clearly how it is possible for someone to get away with such horrific crimes when the evidence is so clear. Not only did the Board in the Canadian congregation/school refuse to fire him but the accusers were shunned and their children asaulted. As the video shows, Bryks is a free man who enjoyed a prominent position as a member of the Vaad Horabbonim of Queens and continues to live with blood on his hands.

It's no wonder Kolko and others like him get away with murder while people are suffering, in the face of many who label them crazy, while defending these murderers.

Can you imagine if he was Italian? He would be lying next to Jimmy Hoffa, under the goal-posts in the Giants end-zone in the Meadowlands.

The CBC documentary on bryks and Daniel Levin's parents is heart-breaking.

Please explain how UOJ is an apikores.
Making fun of jewish institutions and leaders who are corrupt is not proof.

There is a basis to believe that the zohar and kabbalah is bunk. See r' yaakov emden sefer on his investigation of zohar.
If you believe in that basis, and nowhere does it say that the zohar is one of 13 ikkarim, then you believe that chassidus is probably bunk as well.
does anyone think that any current rebbe is a real tzaddik?
Let me ask you.
How many of you lakewood guys make fun of YU rabbonim, or Rav Kook, or other MO rabbonim.
Imagine if MO is the correct derech, then Lakewood is a den of apikorses.

Jeez. If you have never been part of the physically, psychically, emotionally and spiritually abused members of the Orthodox Jewish Community in Crooklyn, you couldn’t possibly understand, especially if you are male, that you don’t drop a dime on the tribe. Legitimate or not, that’s how they brainwash you from day one…Teacher is hitting you with a stick ’cause you don’t know your place in chumash? Who is an 8-year-old gonna call if no one notices his black and blue marks? Had your ears twisted? Your parents, when you were little and went to complain, were told by the principles of the little two-bit child molesters that they would never find a yeshiva willing to take their kids if they “moisered.” Ten years ago, I ripped the lid off of this can of worms, and interestingly, todays’s Jewish Standard has an article on this very topic.
The toughest thing to teach Orthodox women to do, some of them beaten bloody, was to get them to call 911. And then there’s the statute of limitations, too. Someone should ASAP call Ed Gluck in BP and get hold of the persons in Hyne’s office who handled the three boys from Bobov who gang raped a kid who then committed suicide. They should be able to put this on the criminal track–and BTW, this menuval’s name popped up years ago, but no one would come forward. Do you guys know who to call for publicity? I do.

Who could watch the CBC documentary and not get enraged.

In Winnipeg which is not a right-wing chareidi community the whistleblowers were shunned and spat on.

We all know the reaction in our community, it would be difficult to marry of kids because the whistleblower would be accused of having a dirty mind.

If you listen to Rabbi Nossen Kaminetky's speach at Beth-El, his grandchildren are having trouble with shidduchim because their grandfather's book was banned. He wrote a book about people who are dead a half-century. Point a finger at a molester, you're doomed.

Bryks father-in-law. Lives around the corner from TT. Respectable guy, klal mensch, molester. They are all over the place. It has to stop!

While I totally agree with your blog, in terms of pointing out the wrongs in the Jewish Community around the world and trying to get them to do what is right, how is the JP wrong about what they said?

To send out an anonymous letter, without showing any proof about it, is wrong imo. I think a letter demonstrating a lawsuit underway or an investigation about these allegation into the school and a teacher there might of been better.

Many people have probably dismissed/ignored or have enraged by the letter because there is no proof. For all they know you are trying to smear the persons name.

You should try and get some of these people to officially come forward and be able to take this publicly so therefore people cannot mistake what you are trying to do here.

Nothing the JP said was wrong, there might of been better ways of going about this.

Cutting through all the "noise", the main objection to the accusations on your blog is that despite the stories and first person accounts no substantiation of the accusations has been put forward.

To me the curious point is this: If the accusations are false, given the wide circulation the anonymous letter has had in Brooklyn, the heated discussions on this and other blogs (yeshivaworld, enduoj etc) you would think that out of respect for its parent body that RM and tt would put out an open letter to its parent body denying the accusations.

No denial has been put out as far as i know.

Can it be, that on the advice of his lawyers RM and tt cannot put out such a denial because if they do so and it is proven false they have exposed themselves to legal liability ?

Food for thought.

get with the program, no one has denied the accusations or called them libelous and false. No one has sued for defamation. Dear parents of Yeshiva Torah Temimah students

I bring my readers a copy of a letter sent to Lipa Margulies by the group I’m working with to rid Yeshiva Torah Temimah of Yudi Kolko the child molester. If Margulies refuses the offer we move to the second step in our campaign to protect children from Yudi Kolko the molester.

Dear parents of Yeshiva Torah Temimah students, if Margulies does not remove Yudi Kolko the molester, Yeshiva Torah Temimah is finished. Either convince this evil old man to change his ways or enroll your children elsewhere. You will want your children to be very far away from Yeshiva Torah Temima when our second step hits (no, we are NOT threatening violence.) Your children do not deserve the stigma that will attach to them if Margulies doesn’t do the right thing very soon.

The Letter:

Rabbi Leopold Margulies
609 Ocean Parkway
Brooklyn, NY 11218

Rabbi Margulies:

This is to follow up on our earlier letters and telephone conversations.

To knowingly harbor a child molester is a crime. Despite your complicity in Yudi Kolko’s heinous atrocities and your continued refusal to remove this chronic child molester from our children’s classroom, we believe the greater good of our community is served by this matter being resolved without need for further action.

Accordingly, we are making the following offer. Our group and you will each deposit $100,000.00 [We suggest you fund your $100,000.00 contribution from the $1,900,000.00 you took from Yeshiva & Mesifta Torah Temimah on December 23, 2005.] with a mutually agreed upon major law firm. The law firm will have sole authority to spend the $200,000.00 investigating the charges of child molestation against Yudi Kolko and the charges against you of sheltering and covering up the child molesting. You will cooperate fully in this investigation. In the event Kolko and you are exonerated, we will reimburse your $100,000.00 and issue a public retraction and apology. In the event Kolko and you are found guilty, the report will be released to the public. For your causing countless families' lives destroyed, you must compensate them by setting up a five million dollar fund to be administered by Torah Umesorah.

As a condition of this offer, Yudi Kolko must be placed on immediate leave of absence.

You may announce your acceptance of our offer by contacting Rabbi Joshua Fishman of Torah Umesorah on or before February 16, 2006, 12:00 PM.

Please take heed and consider this proposal carefully for your business will not survive our next move. The progression of this campaign remains entirely up to you. We do not want to escalate this unfortunate situation to the next level. We are proud of our heritage and suffer greatly when scandal hits our community. Nonetheless, we will not sit idly by and allow you to devastate our children.

It is not our purpose to destroy you or Yeshiva Torah Temimah, but only when child molesters have been extirpated from our schools and camps will there be hope for a decent life for our children.

  2. Dearest UOJ,

I humbly submit to you and declare that I have been directly at the recieving end of your chessed and your kind words to me both in public via your posts and in private emails and you have been a source of light and strength to me. You directly involved your self in my case and I am for ever grateful for the unbelievable way you worked and for the speedy way do did it.

Yet I would like to promote an idea that hit me today. Perhaps it is a resulting good thought brought about from the tiny baby step the Jewish Mess took in the right direction. (even while tiptoing around the matter of bloggs and thier positive effect in this matter. And failing to mention the coverup and intimidation issues etc.)

Why not dedicate your blog to the memory of Chezy Goldberg HY"D? This Ish Koddosh was a pioneer in helping young victims of molestation and furthermore was in the forefront of spreading awareness about this issue. Years ago he had a column in the Jewish Mess (to the credit of this lost in the woods weekly) which dealt with this issue in a very open way. Tragicaly he was lost to us by a bus bombing in Israel and never lived to see your glorious work on this topic. The Chareidi papers covered his murder some time ago but he was never given recognition for his work since these papers wont deal with real issues that should concern us. A search for Chezi Goldberg on the JewishPress website will bring up some of his work.

    Just a suggestion, UOJ

With love and respect Chaver, and thanx again for protecting my anonimity last summer, among the many good things u did for me. You were there for me so many times when I needed you and I'll never forget your selfless acts of chessed on my behalf and on behalf of all the victims.

Letter From Molestation Victim Creates A Storm
The recent letter from a 15-year-old molestation victim caused quite a
storm of activity in my e-mail and mailboxes. His story, horrific and
frightening to read, created a collective current of responses that continue to
flow in weeks after his plea for help was registered in this column. His cry
for help has affected victims in recovery, victims still in hiding, and from
concerned citizens in general. The consensus is that his letter represents a
crime that continues to be perpetrated and covered up, so much so, that even
in the year 2003, pedophiles continue to wreak havoc on the lives of little
boys and girls, and not enough is being done about it.

The overwhelming majority of people request that this column continue
to run letters such as the one written by the 15-year-old molestation victim,
as well as letters from the general public in order to give them a constructive
forum to vent their fears and concerns, and to share ideas. And so, the
    discussion continues.

    Dear Chezi,

I read your column that included the letter from the 15-year-old
molestation victim with much anger and sadness. This boy will have
serious issues if this situation is not dealt with, and so will our people. It
angers me that there are people who don't approve of your writing on this
topic. It is wrong that we are so concerned with maintaining our un-
tarnished image that we'd risk the safety of children!

We are not perfect. Many don't want to face reality, but in our
community there are those who steal, use drugs, abuse, and molest. We
have gone so overboard censoring all the prost (coarse) in our community
that we have cast off those that really need our help. Please send your
article to every yeshiva possible to get the message across. Don't listen to
those readers. You have an obligation as a counselor to assist these poor
    souls. We have a responsibility!<

    Gary, Somewhere USA

    Dear Chezi,

I was six years old when my cheder rebbe stole my innocence away
from me. I thought he was being warm and friendly. I did not understand
that when he touched me inappropriately, it was wrong. I did not
understand why it was wrong for him to entice me to keep secrets. And I
was not the only one. He told me that it would be our secret. He gave me
presents and prizes for my silence. I am now in my mid-20's. I am one of
those little boys who was molested and kept the secret inside for years.
Chezi, it affected me. It was not until years later that I realized, with the
help of a wonderful therapist, just how badly it affected me.

I do not fault my parents. It was not their fault that the school
ignored the signs and kept the rebbe on staff. It was not their fault that the
yeshiva worried more about the rebbe's salary and career than about the
    little children in his charge.

For reasons that I will not go into detail here, I was sent years later,
in my late teens, for mandatory therapy. It was only then that the trauma
and tragedy of my life came out of the closet. My parents felt horrible. They
    blamed themselves.

I keep telling them that, for years, all of the parents thought this
rebbe was the "cream of the crop." The school had heard rumors but chose
to ignore them. And over time, he molested tens of children. He is now
    behind bars, where he belongs.

I do not seek revenge against a man who sick. Only a sick person
would force himself on little boys. However, if keeping him behind bars
means that little children are safe, then that is where he should be. I have
a bigger problem with the school staff who decided to turn a blind eye when
little children were being messed up for life. They cannot be forgiven.

Thank you for writing about child molestation. Someone has to.

    Molested, New York

    Dear Molested,

I have no comment on your letter, which is powerful and profound. I
only want to wish you a continued recovery from the trauma that you
suffered as a child. It takes great personal courage to face these past
traumas and I pray that G-d continues to give you the strength.

    Chezi, Israel

    Dear Chezi,

Our local day school had a preying molester on staff. Apparently,
higher ups knew what was happening but chose to look the other way. This
man was preying on little boys in his charge. Nothing was done for years.
This man was also heavily involved in running many after-school activities.
All of the parents loved him for his dedication to the kids. They did not
realize that his dedication was motivated by sexual depravity.

Then one year, suddenly everything changed. He was fired without
severance pay. For those readers who would like to know what changed, I
will oblige you with the answer. He finally molested one child too many.
Yes, when the grandson of the principal was discovered to be a victim, the
teacher with the wandering hands was fired fast and furious. They ran the
teacher out of town so fast that no one knew what happened.

Thinking about this case in retrospect, I guess the principal finally
found a victim that he could no longer look in the eye and deny reality to.

    One Former Victim, Canada

    Dear Chezi,

I have been reading your column for a couple of years now. I always
find it interesting, although sometimes, quite frankly, you deal with some
real heavy topics that can cause me to lose sleep at night. When that
happens, I wonder if you sleep at all, knowing what you do, seeing what you
see, hearing what you hear in your clinic. Anyway, here is my question.

I always thought that molesters were fringe lunatics. I am getting the
sneaking suspicion after following your column that in fact, molesters are
anything but deviant maniacs. Am I right or wrong?

    Curious to Know
    Gush Etzion, Israel

    Dear Curious,

Your sneaking suspicion is correct. Molesters are often upstanding
citizens, responsible community folks, steady job-holders and trusted
names in the town. In fact, they are often family members ? those people
that a child naturally trusts the most.

That is why, when people hear of charges being laid against a
pedophile, most often the first reaction is shock ? i.e., it can't be true! He is
such a nice man! Along the same lines, perhaps you can now understand
why so many children do not report sex crimes. Children intuitively
understand that it will, indeed, be difficult to convince the outside world
that this "wonderful person" could be such a rogue. And so, often molesters
are siblings, trusted grandparents, educators and the like. So, throw out
the old stereotype because, statistically, the molester is someone most
victims are quite familiar with when the cycle begins. This makes the
trauma of the molestation even more severe, since so often, the molester
was supposedly someone whom the child could trust.

Thanks for being such an avid reader of this column and keep your

  3. For the record, Avrohom Mondrowitz, the most prolific molester of boys, was strongly affiliated with OHEL and those money making bastards who are busy with Charlie Hynes Molester programs but when it comes to the victims they time and again ended up with counselors who themselves were molesters. Browse The Awareness Center list of Rabbi rapists and molesters and see for yourself how many molesters were in thier employ. Of course it is in the interest of Ohel and other machers to keep this stuff under the carpet.
As for Charlie the Money and the Votes Hynes I personaly know someone who emailed his office years ago about what was going on with Leizerowitz in the Gerrer mesivta and Hynes couldn't give a damn. No wonder when the Gerrer shit finaly hit the fan this past summer those in the know would not talk with the DA's office. His Jewish affairs liaison is too busy doing the politicaly correct thing then to save little boyz from being given a rub down for a Rabbi's animalistic pleasures. This Gerrer faggot would preach abstinance and that the students should refrain from masturbation all the while spending these 30 odd years jerking off on little boys thighs and confusing thier minds with these contradictory messages, and this from the high holy rosh yeshiva no less! I'm nauseas describing his actions but people have to know what goes on in the heart of our communities by the very ones claiming to be the holiest about middos HaYisod.

Long live Boog, Gross, UOJ and LVF!

  4. http://jewishsurvivors.blogspot.com/2007/02/shlomo-greenwald-n-sexual-abuse-in.html

As we are all aware there was a failed attempt by Ohel to treat sex offenders. I'll be honest, I have also only heard complaints of their treatment program for survivors. For those of you who are not familiar with Ohel, they are an orthodox mental health center in Brooklyn, NY.

A few years ago Ohel jumped on the bandwagon and called themselves experts without the necessary education or training. Because they are a Torah observant agency, individuals automatically instilled trust in them to provide appropriate counseling and treatment. Unfortunately, many survivors ended up feeling re-victimized.

Those of us at The Awareness Center have heard too many rumors over the years of offenders getting off the hook because of the "treatment" Ohel provided them. Unfortunately, this is example of the charedi world trying to do the right thing, yet lacking the necessary experience or training.

I have to admit that it is great that the haredi world is attempting to do the right thing, yet it's so vitally important for rabbis and mental health professionals to be qualified to do the work they are attempting to do first.

Over the last several years various papers have quoted David Mandel as an expert in sexual trauma and offenders. Mandel is the chief executive officer at Ohel. The problem is that David Mandel's education, degree and experience is in business. Quoting Mandel on these issues would be very similar to the New York Times quoting Donald Trump as an expert in halacha.

One very important comment made by David Mandel in Greenwald's article is that "very few people can treat it (sexual abuse/assault and offenders) because few therapists specialize in abuse."

The truth is outside the orthodox world there are many extremely qualified psychotherapist who have the necessary training and experience. Until orthodox professionals catch up to the secular world in their education in treating sexual trauma -- we need to utilize the best of what's out there. The goal is to help survivors heal and find ways that actually work in stopping sexual predators from re-offending.

One of the long term goals of The Awareness Center is to have a healing retreat center in which we can provide the necessary training to Jewish professionals and community leaders. The Awareness Center now offers a certification program to do just that -- what's lacking is the funding to get our program off the ground.

Over the years Rabbi Avraham Twerski has been an outspoken advocate in the areas of chemical addictions and domestic violence (women who have been battered by husbands). Unfortunately the fields of addictions and domestic violence are very different then working with survivors of sex crimes and those who commit them. A very sad reality is that when several survivors of childhood sexual abuse and also adults who have been sexual assaulted approached Rabbi Twerski for help, they reported feeling shunned and turned away. We all have our limitations in the areas we can be experts in. We need to be referring survivors to individuals who will not leave them feeling abandoned by someone they thought could help them.

I personally believe Rabbi Twerski is an extremely honorable man, someone who really understands the issues of domestic violence and addictions, yet when it comes to sex crimes he has his limitations. The same can be said about Rabbi Mark Dratch who is the founder of JSAFE.

One has to believe that the statistics of sex crimes in the orthodox world is the same as it is in any other population until it is proven differently. One out of every 3 - 5 women, and one out of ever 5 -7 men over the age of 18 are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. We need to be teaching our children about "good touch - bad touch" at a very early age. When we are teaching children the names of their body parts, it is vitally important we make sure our children knows the proper names of all of their body parts and not just their "head, shoulders, knees and toes".

Another thing that is helpful is to teach our children that the parts of their bodies that are covered by a bathing suit are very special and that no one has a right to touch them, except when changing diapers, when young children are being bathed or by a doctor for medical reasons, etc.

Over and over again when I mention the work of The Awareness Center many people start talking about domestic violence. They automatically ask if I'm connected to one of the local Jewish shelters. Organizations like the Shalom Task Force are excellent resources for battered women. The problem is that they are really not set up to handle survivors of sexual abuse/assault, parents of survivors, relatives or spouses of sex offenders or helping individuals making hotline reports. As stated in Greenwald's article they refer callers to frum therapist. Yet the article states there are not many orthodox therapists with the proper education, training or experience to be working with those who are facing the reality of sexual victimization.

Another issue is isn't really addressed is that sexual violence is not a "woman's issue". It's a human issue that claims the innocence of survivors that are both male and female -- and that are adults and children.

Over the last several months since the case of Rabbi Yehuda Kolko broke, The Awareness Center has been inundated by male survivors calling for help. I'll be honest with you, at this time we have more orthodox male survivor contacting us then orthodox female survivors. A major obstacle has been trying to find them appropriate help from those with proper qualification.

Shlomo Greenwald's article is very long and touches on many different topics. Due to time restraints I can't address all of them. What I do want to encourage is that if you or someone you know is a victim of a sex crime, the first step you should make is to report the crime to your local police department. If you are afraid to do this alone, contact your local rape crisis center and they will have a legal advocate go with you. A benefit of doing this is that you will become eligible for compensation from the victim witness program in your state. This program will help cover the cost of rape victim counseling for you and your family.

If you need a rabbi to give you permission to go make either a hotline or police report, contact The Awareness Center and we will put you in touch with rabbis we feel have are educated and experience in dealing with sex crimes.

If you need help finding a rape crisis center or need other resources please contact The Awareness Center. We will do our best to help you find appropriate resources in your community. We can be reached at 443-857-5560 or by e-mail at info@theawarenesscenter.org

  6. Henna White is Hynes liason to the Jewish community. If anyone has the ability to pressure her please do so. She is a South African Lubavitcher woman who lives in Canarsie with her attorney husband Asher. She created a group that "deals" with abuse called Brairot and is involved in all kinds of bleeding heart liberal stuff like Black-Jewish relation groups.

According to this article, White & her husband, along with Hynes, have been involved in shady cover ups of crimes.

Now here's where things become interesting. Jacobson's $25,000 bail and the bulk of his restitution are being paid by an Orthodox Jewish charity, Keren Aniyim, of 1314 Avenue J in Brooklyn, which according to its latest filing with the attorney general, raised $1,733,725 in contributions in 1998.

A person whose wife works as a volunteer for the charity in his Brooklyn advertising office at that address says that "special donors" were approached to help Jacobson. But why would a charity seek funds for an admitted swindler? Its directors-Abraham Diamond, Jack Weinman, Hirsch Wulliger and Saul Perlstein, all of Brooklyn-couldn't be reached for comment.

  13. finally back to the issue of molestation and yeshiva coverups, the blog was getting a little off hand with all these torahs and pshetlich on kabballah and chochumim of 1000 years ago, oh and all that science please i had enough of that in elementary school.
kolko, eisman, tendler, leizerowitz, mondrowitz, they and their enablers " Charles Hynes"included should be the topic of our conversations.
while Charles Hynes is the topic i think its a disgrace the whole electorate process of electing a DA OR EVEN A JUDGE FOR THAT MATTER IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL for them to collect private contributions!!!!
just look at all the TUCHIS LECKIN that goes on, by the way charlie some of these tuchises are so full of s**t you will never finish licking them clean.
i can never forgive you for letting leizerowitz off the hook years ago after being personnally contacted by a victim of his, you didnt even give a rats ass, or maybe you did but decided to opt for the power and money, for you knew if you start up with the chareidim you lose come next election. (truth be told you probably enjoy all the tuchis you get) and for that i will never forgive you, for you to sit and listen to a victims plea for help, the cry of an innocent young boy that was abused and begging for something to be done and nothing zilch not even an offer of setting up a private meeting with the boy so it should seem as if someone does care, your trash charlie trash!!!
and with this i conclude may you have the merit to sit between LEIZEROWITZ AND KOLKO IN HELL for b/c of you not doing your job as DA you let that pervert victimize and abuse many other innocents, rot in hell with all molesters of the universe.

  15. To Anon @8:19,

I don't think the answer is moving away and running from them. This means that you are surrendering and that they won. That is exactly what they want, to have all the "rebels" and non-kool aid drinkers move away so that they have absolute control over their kingdom. They're the ones that should be on the run, not the decent, law abiding, observant Jews.

The main thing is not to give in to their bullying tactics and their intimidation. Their old threats of "no shidduchim" or "no yeshiva will accept your kids" have been worn out and carry no weight at this point. They know that their days are numbered and it is only a matter of time that they will all be exposed. Witness the debacle of the Agudah Convention, and you see a leadership that is running scared from ghosts and shadows- anonymous bloggers. Their ultimate undoing will not be because of the bloggers. The bloggers are only the shlichim, Hashem's messengers. Their undoing will be because of their own stubborness and their unwillingness to change their evil ways. I believe the silent majority of frum Jews have had enough of the corruption and they are slowly but surely ending their silence. We will very soon b"h have a very strict uniform policy in all our yeshivos regarding molesters. We will also bring all the molesters and enablers to justice. 16. Can anyone explain why Super-Ganav & Chotay umachtee ess harabim Leib Pinter is kosher enough for Nosson Scherman & Artscroll but not me?

    http://haemtza.blogspot.com/2007/02/greening-of-torah-jewry.html

Rabbi Berel Wein is an interesting fellow. He is a Musmach of my alma mater, HTC, and maintains a close relationship with the Yeshiva. He is also the brother-in-law of Telshe Rosh HaYeshiva, Rav Avrohom Chaim Levin. And he has a very close relationship with him as well.

His views on issues affecting the Torah world are well known and have been recorded and published in various media. His history tapes are legendary and were turned into a very successful three volume book series. He is also a prolific writer and has written many articles on issues having to do with the Torah world.

And he speaks his mind. He does not try to be politically correct. This is probably one of the reasons his writings did not pass muster with Mesorah Publications (Artscroll). His books are instead published by Shaar Press and distributed by Mesorah. I’m not exactly sure what this means but I surmise that his books are “Kosher” enough to be distributed by them but not “Kosher” enough to be published by them.

Yisroel Best, Charman of the Netzigim, was attacked by Moshe Rubashkin during a Netzigim meeting several months ago, and needed Emergency Room treatment. As a result of asking a sha’alo to Rav Osdoba, he sought Police protection against further assaults. In response, Moshe Rubashkin filed counter charges of assault against Best. The case went before a Judge this past Thursday, November 2nd.

Mr. Best agreed to a six-month adjournment of the court case during which Mr. Rubashkin’s behavior will be monitored. If he behaves properly the case will be dismissed. Rubashkin’s counter charges of assault against Best were thrown out.

When Mr. Best realized that an Order of Protection would prevent Rubashkin from davening in "770" when he was there, he asked his lawyer to arrange for a Limited Order of Protection which will allow dovoning in the same shul. This was granted by the Judge for the next 12 months.

    by Kristen Lombardi

    Village Voice - July 25th, 2006

    http://villagevoice.com/news/0630,lombardi,73955,2.html

Accused of sexually abusing young boys, a Brooklyn rabbi lit for Israel 22 years ago. Now one alleged victim wants him brought back for trial.

Out of the shadows: Abe asked the Brooklyn D.A. to reopen the case against Rabbi Mondrowitz.

Hynes has worked hard to court the community over the years. In 1990, he became the first D.A. in the city to convene a Jewish advisory council, which kept leaders abreast of cases involving Jewish defen-dants or complainants. The council is now defunct, says Schmetterer, replaced by the office's full-time liaison to the Hasidic community, Henna White, herself a Lubavitcher. (He refused to let the Voice interview White for this article, saying, "It wouldn't be her place to talk about this case.")

Aaron Twerski, the dean of Hofstra Law School and a former council member, describes Hynes's relationship to the Orthodox community as "quite positive." He explains, "Hynes is a presence in the community. He's been responsive."

  25. Project Eden for abuse victims is run by Hynes & White in collaboration with Ohel. Does anyone know who runs the Shalom Task Force? They are also involved.

Henna White got "Georgie" to tell all the shaytelmachers in town to report any abuse cases through her. I guess Hynes & the Iggud Haganovim can keep everything under wraps that way.

UOJ and the public should contact the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty who provide support and funding to these cover up artists.

It's interesting that Charles Hynes told the Jewish Week in Feb. 2003 that he was abused as a child growing up in his Flatbush home.

A Blight On All Of Us – Two Letters
Special Note: As often happens, despite the fact that I planned to terminate the discussion on a particular subject, I feel compelled to continue because the letters that arrive are truly meaningful and deserve to be shared with you, our readers. I bring the following two letters to your attention:

    Letter # 1 – I Lost My Brother

It was with much pain that I read your series of articles regarding school tuition. Pain, because our family paid a terrible price for this yeshiva tuition crisis – we lost our brother, the oldest child in our family. My parents went through a period when they struggled just to pay the rent and put food on the table. My father, who has no profession, couldn’t find employment that would provide him with the means to support us. When my parents married, the plan was for my father to remain in yeshiva and learn, while my mother’s parents supported them.

But, as very often happens, the best-laid plans can go awry. My grandfather, who had never been ill, did not come home from work one day - my grandmother received a call from the police. He had collapsed on the street and suffered a fatal coronary. Aside from the terrible shock, pain, and tragedy, we had to contend with an additional crisis. My grandfather’s businesspartners did not deal appropriately with my grandmother, and suddenly we were entangled in ugly lawsuits. My grandmother engaged attorneys whose fees were exorbitant – I do not want to go into detail because some of your readers might identify our family, and I don’t want to embarrass or cause further pain to mygrandmother who has suffered enough. In any event, the bottom line was that my grandmother had to renege on the agreement to support my parents and my father had to find a job. But because of his lack of skills and training, my father was obliged to take a very low-paying position.

At this point, my brother was already in yeshiva and my parents couldn’t afford the tuition. And now, the nightmare began. My parent’s shalom bayis flew out the window, and the tension in our home mounted every day. To exacerbate the situation, the school notified us that unless tuition was paid, my brother wouldn’t be allowed in class. Of course, my parents appeared before the tuition committee, where they were put through a wringer and degraded by the cross examination of the “Scholarship Committee.” Even though a scholarship was awarded, my parents most often couldn’t even meet those payments.

Somehow, my brother managed to muddle through elementary school although he was sent home on numerous occasions, denied his report card and not permitted to take his exams, which led him to develop a very cynical attitude toward study and yeshiva in general. Very soon, he became a behavior problem and pretended to be happy to be sent out of class. By the time he was ready for high school, he had become what is today called “A youth at risk.”

He refused to go to yeshiva high school, but even if my parents had forced him to go, they wouldn’t have been able to find a school that would take him with his track record, although at that point, my parents’ financial situation had improved somewhat. My paternal grandfather passed away and left a small inheritance, which my father successfully invested – but it was too little, too late for my brother.

Today he is married to a totally irreligious girl. They do not even keep a kosher home. It breaks my parents’ hearts. They have a little boy and have no intention of giving him a Jewish education. The tragedy is beyond words. It is not only my brother, butgenerations that are being lost because of the insensitivity of the yeshiva tuition policy. I am writing to you in the hope that you will publish this letter so that people will come to realize the far-reaching catastrophic impact that such a situation can engender.

    Letter #2 - Preserving One’s Dignity

    Dear Rebbetzin Jungreis,

I read the responses to the young lady who went through such a terrible time in high school. My heart goes out to her because the damage is irreparable. The problem of tuition is not a new one. I am in my 50’s and we went through similar trials with tuition. The only difference is that at that time, the principals did not humiliate the children – it was our parents who took a strong beating.

My mother was a survivor of the Holocaust and her children’s chinuch meant everything to her, so she came up with a plan that was acceptable to the school and also to her children.

Every summer, as soon as we were old enough to be junior counselors, we would work for free to help give something back to the school that gave so much to us. During the year, we would also volunteer for anything that needed to be done for our school. One of the things that stands out in my mind was being there to pack up countless books when our school moved and helped resettle in a new building.

It was so cold outside and our fingers were frozen, but our hearts were warm knowing that we were doing something so special. I feel that this was a strong lesson for us in hakaras ha’tov, and I know that the school really appreciated everything our family did. We were often singled out for chesed awards from the principal.

This letter is not so much for this young woman, who already went through so much, but it is my hope that the schools will work out something like this for people in similar situations and allow our children to preserve their dignity. We must remember that as mechanchim, we teach children that it is a terrible aveirah to embarrass someone. Shouldn’t those mechanchim practice what they preach?

If the young woman’s letter awakens our community to protect other children from going through this torture, she will, with G-d’s help, heal faster. I would like to tell her that we do not know why we go through different situations in life, but please let her try to put her right foot forward and show that her love for Hashem doesn’t change because of the insensitivity of others. And for all those out there who occupy leadership positions – please try to remember that you are there for Klal Yisroel and not for your ego.

Rebbetzin Jungreis – I have met you a few times and I cannot thank you enough for all you do for Klal Yisroel. May Hashem help you and may we merit the geulah shelaimah soon. Please do not sign my name if you print this letter.

Satmar’s Campaign To Cap Shtreimel Prices

Unofficial estimates indicate that more than 70 percent of chassidishe and observant households struggle to provide basic necessities when marrying off their children. This concern has been the focus of many groups and efforts, to varying degrees of success.

Within Satmar, an organization titled Chevra Kol Chassanim, established for the specific purpose of “eliminating the pressure and high costs” in marrying off children, has successfully been established in the Kiryas Yoel yeshiva.

The first item on their list is the traditional shtreimel that is purchased by the prospective father-in-law for the chassan to wear at his wedding. The price of a “better” shtreimel has risen from $2,800 in 2003 to $3,800 today.

The students at the yeshiva have agreed that they will not accept shtreimels at prices higher than $1,200. This represents the very first, and a very visible, step in the noble effort being undertaken to cut wedding expenses.

On Monday, January 29, the students personally presented their signed commitments to Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, Satmar Rebbe. The Rebbe reviewed each document and blessed the effort, calling them “golden.” Wearing a less expensive shtreimel under the chuppah will give each chassan a greater opportunity to be blessed with baskets of bounty directly from Heaven.

  35. Shocking study that the Young Israel crowd doesn't really keep taharas hamishpocho like they should. Guerman is a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, the home base of the Bungalow Putz. Maybe Neuhoff should survey his Fallsburg colony to see if people that don't read UOJ keep hilchos nida.

    http://www.jstandard.com/articles/2262/1/Marital-relations-focus-of-new-study

Mark Guterman’s research has raised a few eyebrows.

The Teaneck resident, a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University, has launched a study to examine observance of niddah, the laws of family purity, hoping to convince Jews of all denominations to focus attention on them.

Mark Guterman is taking a close look at niddah practice.
The survey, accessible through a Website he’s set up, www.jewishsurveys.org, contains some 50 questions designed to gather both qualitative and quantitative data about the practices of married couples. Guterman is collaborating with Orit Avishai, a graduate student in psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, the study’s sponsor.

Guterman, 22, said that despite having attended a yeshiva high school, he knew little about the specificity of the laws, also known as taharat hamishpacha, which mandate that couples observe a period of sexual abstinence during and for seven days following the wife’s menstruation, and other prohibitions on physical contact. His initial research, conducted through his community, Young Israel of Staten Island, and completed in the summer of 2005, revealed that many who claim to adhere to the niddah laws were inadvertently violating a number of prohibitions, particularly those pertaining to the so-called "clean" days after menstruation. Instead, they indicated in their responses that they were sharing couch cushions, kissing, passing utensils, and engaging in other behaviors that are not in strict accordance with Jewish law.

Those results, based on only 53 survey participants and published in the peer-reviewed psychology journal, Method and Theory in the Study of Religion (Vol. 18, No. 1, pp. 92-100), Guterman believes, raised awareness among modern Orthodox communities, leading to refresher courses for young couples already married or engaged. The response led Guterman to conclude that this area of halacha was "sorely under-researched."

In his current project, therefore, Guterman has broadened the scope. Through word-of-mouth, direct mail, postings on online message boards, and the creation of his Website, Guterman has invited people of all Jewish backgrounds to take his survey. While he has yet to approach rabbis to ask their help in distributing the survey, he wouldn’t rule that out if he doesn’t get enough responses on the Website.

Early indications are, however, that he will not need outside assistance. In the first month the survey has been posted, he received more than 800 hits, representing the denominational spectrum. While Guterman anticipates the major findings will concern the ultra-Orthodox and modern Orthodox communities, he believes he will be able to share insights of value to the Reform, Reconstructionist, and Conservative movements, as well.

Today, an important part of his support team is his wife, Violette. "She’s very active in keeping me grounded when I have the occasional nasty comment, like, ‘You shouldn’t be doing this; it’s nobody’s business,’" said Guterman. "She helped me decide that this work is worth doing."

    http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/preview.php?id=17207

Sheriff wants to prosecute Yeshiva Girls soccer players for brawling after lost game

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is planning to ask the district attorney to prosecute a YULA student and the girls soccer team coach.

The request stems from a brawl that occurred on Feb. 5 after the Yeshiva University Girls High School of Los Angeles lost to Avalon High in a girls' soccer game on Catalina Island, according to Avalon Mayor Robert Kennedy.

A team member and spectator from Avalon High are also being referred to the DA's office, said Kennedy, who conferred with Avalon Sheriff's station commander Lt. Pat Hunter.

According to YULA principal Rabbi Yosef Furman, as the YULA girls were leaving the field, student spectators from Avalon attacked the girls, knocking one in the head, putting another in a headlock and pulling her hair and punching her in the stomach Furman called the possible actions against the YULA player and coach "complete nonsense." He said the assaults against the YULA girls, which were unprovoked. "We have witnesses who say that our students acted appropriately and our coach acted professionally."

No one was seriously injured in the melee, and no accounts of racial or religious taunting have been confirmed.

Both sides agree that the game got ugly and physical, with the crowd of about 100 spectators riling the Avalon team for even more aggressive play.

Mayor Kennedy, who was not at the game, says his understanding is that both teams engaged in name-calling and rough play, but YULA counters that the taunting was one-sided.

After the post-game fracas, the YULA team sequestered itself in the visitors' locker room with the help of Avalon school officials, and called the sheriff's department. Officers arrived and escorted the team to the ferry landing, where sheriffs spent several hours interviewing team members, chaperones and YULA Coach Kat Gude, before the team traveled back to the mainland.

Five Avalon students were disciplined after the event, according to a spokesman for the Long Beach Unified School District. One ninth-grade team member was suspended for pushing and shoving; two 12th-grade girls, who were spectators at the event, were suspended for fighting; and an eighth-grade boy and a tenth-grade boy were barred from attending future soccer games.

YULA has canceled all further games with Avalon teams. In addition, YULA circulated a letter asking parents to send a message to Avalon that such conduct is reprehensible. It included phone numbers for city officials.

"The city of Avalon will more likely take action if they get the message that there could be negative repercussions to future tourism," the letter stated.

Kennedy has received more than 30 phone calls -- on his cell phone -- from irate YULA parents. He said he is offended and upset by YULA's sweeping condemnation of the city, especially before an investigation has been completed.

"The worst part of this whole thing is it takes two to tango -- there are always two sides to a story. But it seems that the visiting team's parents have already tried and convicted the Avalon kids that were involved," the mayor said.

  39. It is worth checking out http://theawarenesscenter.org/Mondrowitz_Avrohom.html
for all the facts on the Mondrowitz case.

My big dilemma is how to get Charles Hynes out of office. Clearly he has his own personal interests in mind. Take a look at the telling statements below:

Maybe Hynes has his own reasons for not pushing extradition. In Brooklyn politics, the Orthodox community can wield considerable influence. Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf explains, "They vote, and they vote in large numbers often." He estimates that the Orthodox population accounts for some 30 percent of the borough's electorate, from Williamsburg to Crown Heights, Borough Park, Flatbush, and Midwood. Especially in ultra-Orthodox areas, rabbis tend to pick candidates and congregants cast votes accordingly.

"The rabbis are very important because they tell their followers who to get behind," says Sheinkopf. For a politician, he says, that means "you have to play to them."

Now let's turn our attention to the paper of trash; eh.. i mean the Jewish Press.

"The End Of Innocence" piece By: Shlomo Greenwald, Jewish Press Staff Reporter, is a step in the right direction but a far cry from solving the Sexual Abuse crisis and those enablers who permit these sins to be swept under the rug.

Some of the names prominently featured in this article are:

Rabbi Yosef Blau: One of few "Rabbi's" who bluntly and correctly tells it like it is.

Elliot Pasik: Attorney who has long been an advocate of sexual abuse victims and calling for the Yeshiva's to do fingerprinting and criminal and background checks on all Yeshiva person ell (Pasik is a good guy although I personally would like to see him do even more).

There are those who would like us to believe they have been helping in bringing child molesters to justice; when they have been asked in the past to intervene and have swept it under the rug like all the rest of the dushbags. SO DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THEIR COMMENTS NOW IN WHICH THEY CLAIM TO HAVE BEEN ADVOCATING FOR SEX ABUSE VICTIMS ALL ALONG. THAT IS AN OUTRIGHT LIE! FOR INSTANCE:

    Rabbi Abraham J. Twersky

May be an expert in substance abuse, which is a totally different Megilla than dealing with sexual abuse victims; something his "expertise" does not entail. Moreover, Twersky has known and been told about certain child molesters over the years; and has refused to do NADA; as in Ziltch; Nothing!

Ohel’s David Mandel - Who has long been negligent in bringing to the forefront and acting upon reliable evidence that backs up sexual abuse; could be compared to Yasir Arafat declaring to us that we must do something to stop terrorism. It just doesn't jive my friends.

    Mandel also says:

"very few people can treat it" because few therapists specialize in abuse.
In addition to finding the right therapy, Mandel said, it’s important to seek out a therapist who can deal with the religious dynamics, since Orthodox victims of abuse often struggle with their faith, wondering how God could let such a thing happen to them.

I disagree. there are many well-qualified therapists who are experts in the field of sexual abuse. Orthodox Jewish abuse victims, may be better off seeking a therapist who are NOT from their community, and who are NOT Jewish orthodox. Just because a therapist happens to be a religious Jew, it should not deter victims of sexual/physical abuse to seek help from outside their community and jurisdiction.

Many times as we have seen, the Orthodox Jewish community people (therapists and all included) have failed to protect and help the victims seeking their counsel and guidance. A gentile or non-religious therapist, can still be of great help. Not believing that G-D can let such a thing happen to them, is something a well qualified sex-abuse therapist can help victims deal with regardless of their ethnicity or religion.

And because there is this misconception out there that only a "frum" therapist can help, it does a disservice and leads sexual abuse victims to seek help from the wrong places; and perhaps preventing victims from ever seeking the proper therapist they so truly need, desire, and deserve.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes - Perhaps the biggest phony and hypocrite of them all; who still steadily refuses to extradite Avrohom Mondrowitz, has some nerve, take a look:

To encourage more Orthodox Jews to engage secular authorities, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes set up Project Eden, which runs programs in concert with many Orthodox social services and attempts to engender cultural sensitivity in the DA’s office and the NYPD.

Henna White - Hynes’s Jewish community liaison, while agreeing with others interviewed for this article that "there is some hesitance" in the Orthodox community to speak out about abuse — mainly due to concerns about modesty and children "not getting a good shidduch" — said she did not necessarily believe that.

Orthodox Jews come forward less frequently than abuse victims in the general population.
"Abuse is very hard for people to talk about," she said. "It’s embarrassing. Nobody wants to come forward."

Hey Hena; STOP TALKING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Under Gov. Eliot Spitzer's budget proposal, which was released last week, the state would spend $25 million to offer income-tax deductions of up to $1,000 per student for parents who pay tuition for their children to attend primary or secondary schools - including private schools, parochial schools and out-of-district public schools that require tuition. The deduction would be limited to families with annual incomes below $125,000.

The Sephardic Community Federation, a public policy foundation based in Brooklyn, has said that, with the deduction, eligible families would save between $60 and $80 per child annually on their state income tax returns.

If approved by the state Legislature, the deduction would provide a modicum of relief for nonpublic school families across Rockland, but nowhere would its effects be more palpable than in East Ramapo, where the number of parochial and private school students- about 17,000 total, according to Wizman's figures - is nearly double that of the public school population.

Most of the district's nonpublic school students attend Jewish schools and come from families that include an average of five children, Wizman said.

In Orthodox Jewish communities, as in other faiths, having many children is considered a blessing, Wizman said. But he said the traditionally large sizes of Orthodox Jewish families, coupled with the costs of parochial school tuition, amount to a significant financial burden.

With deductions determined on a per-child basis, the larger the family, the more it might stand to save.

At Yeshiva Bas Mikroh, an all-girls school in Monsey, Rabbi Shimon Rosengarten, the dean of the school, said that students there come from families of six or seven children each. Spitzer's proposed deduction could certainly help them, he said.

"There are families that struggle to make ends meet, and whatever savings they could have would make a difference," Rosengarten said.

Adam Morgenstern of Monsey, who has five children who attend Jewish schools, said that, in general, the deduction would serve only as a "Band-Aid" for families struggling with escalating property tax bills. But he added, "We would benefit greatly from any type of tax credit, rebate, anything that gives back to these families something, just something they can hold on to.

"For a family with several children in private school, the numbers begin to add up and it can really be a true savings for them," said Aaron Troodler, the legislative director of the Sephardic Community Federation. But Troodler, who is also a Monsey resident, said the federation was focusing less on the proposed deduction's immediate fiscal benefits and more on what it could mean for the future.

"It creates a framework where none existed before," Troodler said. "We're certainly hoping to build upon this and in the future make sure that parents receive the financial relief they desperately need."

    BY CHRISTINA SANTUCCI
    Thursday, February 8, 2007 3:44 PM CST

Northeast Queens residents can now search for Level 2 sex offenders, like Leon Washington (above).
As part of a review of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry, community activists have found that there are five “high- and moderate-risk” offenders living in the northeast neighborhoods of Flushing and Fresh Meadows.

Four out of the five are “Level 2” offenders - posing moderate risk - meaning that their information was not searchable through the online directory last year. In July 2006, former Governor George Pataki signed into law a bill that added “Level 2” offenders to the State directory, at

    http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/nsor/search_index.htm.

Before then, concerned parents had to call the State Registry with specific information to find out if a “Level 2” sex offender was living next door. The call-in system to the Registry’s hotline - 1-800-262-3257 - is still in place for “Level 1” or low-risk sex offenders, and callers need to know the name of the offender and one of the following: an exact address, a complete date of birth, a driver’s license number, or a social security number, according to the Registry’s website.

Law enforcement agencies are allowed to release information to the community about “Level 1” offenders.

Community leaders in zip codes 11365, 11366, and 11367 were made aware of a number of sexual predators through a newsletter released by Congressmember Anthony Weiner, who recently reviewed the online directory and found that the majority of sex offenders citywide live within five blocks of a school. Weiner along with Congressmember Edolphus Towns proposed a six-point plan to track sex offenders.
“The Registry makes people aware, but as the disclaimer says on the Registry, the information is not for anyone to be malicious against any else,” said Mike Sidell, a member of Community Board 8, which represents the area.

Now local parents could look up information about, addresses for, and photos of Fresh Meadows resident Glen Elfe and Flushing residents Eugene Watson, Anthony LaRocco and Juan Munoz. The current address listed for Elfe is in the same building as the Queens Child Guidance Center, a children’s mental health facility.

The Registry also has information for Leon Wilson, a sexually violent offender in Flushing whose four female victims range in age from six to ten-years-old.

If you don’t like what UOJ does, show us an alternative. I have seen none.

The NY Magazine article ONLY came about due to the organizational efforts of UOJ. The same with the civil and criminal cases. UOJ gathered survivors and organized them. Talk to the survivors, talk to those close to the case. Kolko would still be teaching if not for UOJ. It may be sad, but it is true.

JWB - I agree that the Jewish media need to be more capable and eager when it comes to reporting on issues of clergy abuse. I’ve for a long time been working to develop alternatives, realizing that the Jewish media will likely only change so much without some help, and continue to work toward this goal.
I’m not going to argue about UOJ’s effectiveness here. I’ve presented my arguments before, and you’ve read them. I don’t agree with you on his value.

Let’s be clear: the lawsuits against YTTand the arrest of Kolko did not come about through the efforts of just one person (UOJ). Indeed, while UOJ should be lauded for his relentless blogging on the issue, without the involvement of individuals willing to use their names (not only in the lawsuits, but in other aspects of this case), legal action would never have been taken. I point this out only to highlight that it takes far more than an anonymous blogger to make something happen, and those who believe that UOJ achieved this result single-handedly, solely through ranting on his blog, are sorely mistaken.

Steve, I think its real disingenuous of you to rail against UOJ, Dov Bear, and others who blog anonymously, and you attack their journalistic integrity, but then place your own anonymous blogger on your format. I like your work, but i think your 100% wrong here. By having it on your “network” it makes you no better than an anonymous blogger with your endorsement of it. Its hard to buy into the splitting of the hairs, that one anonymous blogger is better than another.

If not for UOJ, he probably had help, not only would Kolko not have happened, the entire sex-abuse issue and rabbinical corruption explosion would not have happened.
What about the other three confirmed and expelled rabbi molesters? It was UOJ and the Haredis’ fear of him. That’s the truth, you can spin it any way you want to.
The same for JWB, if not for him, Tendler would still be banging the females in his congregation. Like it or not, that’s the truth.

jimmy - I’ve never railed against DovBear, and my arguments against UOJ were about what he did with his anonymity, not his being anonymous in the first place. Orthomom won’t be reporting on Jewess, as UOJ was attempting to do on his blog. That’s not splitting hairs, that’s the basic difference between trying to put non-credible information into the public sphere, and not trying to do so.
It’s not about one blogger being better than another, it’s about what they do with it, though of course I do think Orthomom’s a far better blogger and person.

Steve, Here are your arguements against dovbear and his anonimity.

    ...

    “DovWeasel
Someone’s researched a lot of DovBear’s posts and found a number of blatant examples of plagiarism. Should you care? Only if you gave DovBear much credibility in the first place, which, with his being anonymous, you shouldn’t have. ”

I really think you are splitting hairs.

You aspire for much better, I am very surprised.

    Joe Says:

    February 13th, 2007 at 11:04 am
SIW-What was the “non-credible” info. that you accuse UOJ of? Be specific.

    Steven I. Weiss Says:

    February 13th, 2007 at 11:22 am
jimmy - Indeed, DovBear had no specific credibility for the authenticity of the information he was providing. As an anonymous writer, Orthomom doesn’t, either, but her writing is something that speaks to people in a way that’s very valuable, and something that Jewess readers will find worthwhile.

Joe - See my earlier posts on the topic.

I’m a recent reader of blogs, yours and UOJ. Please name me one item that he was not credible on, forget about the way he expresses himself, he’s fun. I’m serious, can you name ONE credible falsehood?

joe - Right, so because the JP has a story about abuse, UOJ is a credible reporter using credible methods. Do you know anything about reporting, credibility or sourcing? You’re the perfect example of someone needing a lot more education before joining the conversation. At least be humbled by your ignorance, and don’t enter the discussion with wild accusations.

  62. Jewish Whisteblower, if this story with the Queens Vaad is true, I'm even more disgusted with them than I thought I was.

Their kashrus is a farce which is why rabbonim that aren't members of the Vaad don't eat from them. Peretz Steinberg was in charge for a long time and is also a member of the Iggud Haganovim with Mendel Epstein & Belsky and participated in the fake bittul kiddushin. His son in law Asher Schachter was exposed last year on UOJ as being machshir a chain of Jewish owned bagel restaurants that are open on Shabbos & Yom Kippur. After all the unwanted attention, a letter that implied this was sanctioned by both R' Moishe Feinstein & Peretz Steinberg, had the embarrassing reference to Peretz Steinberg removed from the internet. The psak for Vaad kashrus comes these days from Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim circles. They mean well but are a little out to lunch. This comes from the insular Chofetz Chaim attitude where they block out the outside world and what goes on around them.

I'm concerned about this story with Rabbi Zohn because he's also in charge of the eruv. Yeshiva kids used to call his son "Yona Zona". I hope it's a just a joke and not a nevuah that he's whoring himself.

The last director of the Vaad quit because he was stonewalled when he tried to upgrade their kashrus standards. They are currently recruiting for a replacement.

Ephraim Bryks also has free reign in Vaad institutions even though he was forced by the RCA to close his yeshiva there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Moshe Faskowitz of the Queens Vaad is protecting his cousin Moordy Tendler, he even quit the RCA in protest, and let's Bryks give shiurim to girls in his shul. Asher Schachter is in the same neighborhood of Hillcrest / Utopia / Fresh Meadows. Believe it or not, these guys are considered to have the more "yeshivishe" shuls in the area.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Bryks is still around? Incredible!
    Remember Daniel Levin?

All of this 'credibility' vs. non-credidibility' of UOJ is alot of sour grapes. You can take your journalistic guidelines and shove it up your ass. Bottom line fact of the matter is that without UOJ, koko would still be molesting little boys, maybe even your son or grandson and margo would still be strutting around like a fat peacock. The bloom is now off the rose and the enablers and cover-uppers have been exposed.

Now that the drek has been dredged up to the surface for all to see, hopefully progress can be made.

This weeks expose in the Jewish Press on child molestation is the direct result of UOJ's crusade.

  65. "They mean well but are a little out to lunch. This comes from the insular Chofetz Chaim attitude where they block out the outside world and what goes on around them."

It's typical of Chofetz Chaim that they will go through the entire yeshiva to see if someone has a sister for a shidduch. If they have exhausted every possibility in house, they will nebich look at the outside world.

These guys know about UOJ and admit they have a "taavah" to read the blog, but refuse to. They argue along the lines of "just because dozens of people claim they are victims of Kolko, how do you know it's true?"

It's indeed this attitude that leaves them decades behind the times in kashrus and other inyanim. They are sort of like the Litvish equivalent of Lubavitch. They think they are the only ones who have it all figured out.

I have also heard allegations that a rosh yeshiva of an out of town Chofetz Chaim branch, threatened witnesses and victims of Scheinberg's molester nephew that he will "finish" them if they open their mouths. Rabbi Ginzburg from the 5 Towns, a Scheinberg no-penetration promoter is also a Chofetz Chaim official.

  66. To UOJ and all his fellow travellers. You are reshaim. This blog is full of loshon horah. There is only one avaeirah that counts and that is speaking loshon horah.
Do you have proof that Kolko, Peretz Steinberg, Margulies, Pinter speak loshon horah? No!
There is proof that you do. You are not allowing Moshiach to come. On the other hand, keep on with the loshon horah. If it ever gets eradicated, we will be out of buisness and then we would have to take up another cause. Molestation is too icky a cause. Can't put up signs in every shul and public place. We would have to change our corporate symbol from the Chofetz Chaim to another worthy icon. Any ideas? Yudi Kolko? Ephraim Bryks? Heshy Nussbaum? Leizerowitz? Margo? Brenner? So many choices.

By the way $178,000 in compensation is not bad and that is only what I admit to.

  68. I wonder what UOJ's take is on Vicky Polin getting Oprah to pressure YouTube to remove the video.

It just doesn't sound right to stop free exchange of information over technicalities like copyright issues.

  69. Peretz Steinberg has one other claim to fame besides being constantly pummeled by UOJ. There is a kosher bagel store on Main St owned by a Muslim Arab. The Arab got mad at a Jewish guy and took him to a din Torah with the Vaad. Believe it or not, he was looking for a toyain and Peretz Steinberg signed up.

  70. Who is Michael Rothschild? Who appointed him the King of Loshon Horah?
Why do they need so much money, that they are making parlor meetings in cities around the country?
Who gave him permission to use the Chofetz Chaim name?
Who gave him permission to use the "supposed" picture of the Chofetz Chaim?
Why is Michael Rothschild's name never listed on any CCHF paraphenelia?
Why are there no names listed on CCHF posters, ads etc. on who is behind this fictitious organization?

  71. Which bagel store? Bialy's or Bagels & Appetizers?

  72. Of course Bryks "gets free reign" from the Queens Vaad. Peretz Steinberg is in charge of both the Vaad and the Iggud Haganovim. Bryks's shver, the convicted pedophile Lipa Brenner, is Vice President of the Iggud Haganovim.

  73. Berel Wein is probably blacklisted to some extent by Artscroll because he has publicly mentioned that there are other not so well known shitos about loshon hora besides the Chofetz Chaim. 75. It's an old story that the Queens Vaad needs a refuah shelayma. Just like Gornish & Scheinerman, they will seemingly take any freye cholerye who runs a restaurant. Brooklyn rabbonim had tried for years to contact them about problematic stores, but those Queens yoyos wouldn't even return phone calls to find out what the problem was. They just didn't give a darn. A number of months ago the Vaad threw out a whole bunch of places for kashrus violations. Yudel Shain reported that this was all fall out from the Finkel scandal that finally forced these shloffy kep to wake up. Guess what happened about a week later? The Vaad took many of these places back because they know they will lose the accounts to an even worse hashgocho. Besides the Chofetz Chaim element that are takke out of it, the Vaad is mostly comprised of old school YU / Young Israel, the same types that were behind the corruption at the old Flatbush Vaad before Rabbi Goldberg cleaned up house. I hate phonies and I don't care if they wear $4000 shtreimelach, dusty Borsalinos or kipa srugies.

I don't have first hand information on Queens boro but it could be that many of these restaurants are drug fronts like in Brooklyn, where I do know for a fact. The DEA started making a big push in the 1990s to shut these operations down. Some places were frequently raided and kept reopening every few months under a different name. One, the Garden Grill on Coney Island @ I&J even had a chassidish owner. Two bochurim from Chaim Berlin were once rounded up in a dragnet for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The familiar refrain we hear from these heiliger hashgochos is that they are only machshir the food. Hey, who gives a rat's behind about the children at risk being corrupted by the controlled substances being trafficked under Scheinerman's shtempel? Or what about the mistreatment of the illegal Israeli aliens that by and large are waitresses in these holes. Some of the owners steal their tips and treat them like yesterday's garbage. I also have confirmation from multiple sources that the "frum" owner of one restaurant impregnated one of the girls. He sent her back to Israel and quietly pays her an allowance.

If no one speaks up, these money hungry rabbonim will keep pretending these problems don't exist.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yudel Shain has been vindicated again but chas vesholom anyone should listen to him because Agudah types say he is in UOJ's back pocket for reprinting Reb Shraga Feivel's michtav on rabbonishe corruption.

Rabbi Shain has been warning for months now that ALL brands of frozen broccoli are infested with insects. Every brand including Bodek has now issued a recall and the first brave hashgochos have stopped using them. I wonder how long it is until Gornish & Scheinerman jump on the bandwagon to save face. Don't forget that Gornish was the jokester who joined the condemnation letter against Romaine that he himself was promoting the week before. Gornish must be a turtle in disguise who just curls up in his shell and pretends nothing happened until the storm boils over and hopefully everyone forgets about it. Yudel was also warning about Alei Katif greens. They just admitted that they are free of aphids and thrips but collect flies during transport.

Another huge scandal that's being covered up is the presentation that "Trucker Yitz" Vann gave to the AKO (Assoc. of Kashrus Orgs). The major hashgochos are "asleep at the wheel" over major problems with temperature controlled transport trucks. Who cares if your oils & milk are really kosher as long as these rabbonim are padding their bank accounts.

    ReplyDelete
  77. One restaurant with a frum owner had a relative working for him that went off the derech. The goy that she was sleeping with was there working together with her. The hashgocho knew about it but did nothing. Some regular customers started to figure it out. They stopped eating there in disgust and started making rumblings. It's not clear what the hashgocho would've done but then the couple broke up and the goy left.

  79. I don't understand why this forum is becoming about who is more credible. The fact of the matter is UOJ has done his share have YOU done yours?

I have been following the UOJ blog since its inception. Do I agree with everything UOJ blogs about? Of course not, but I do agree on the BIG issues such as exposing and ridiculing the Naysayers, Tuches lickers, and those who killed and maimed innocent children.

Do I think UOJ alone is totally responsible for KOLKO being fired from TT? No. Do I think UOJ alone is responsible for this past Aguda Convention being dedicated to him? No. Even the President of the United States needs help, that's why we have Congressmen, Attorney Generals, and even Vice presidents.

However it does take one brave individual to get the steamroller rolling. It takes one brave person to jump into the yam suf before others will follow suit. It takes one brave person to say they had ENOUGH OF THE GANOVIM AND RODFIM who have re-written the Torah and to actually DO SOMETHING about it.

Enough of us yidden being led like sheep to the slaughter. Enough lies from our so called talmidei chacomim. Enough sweeping crimes under the rug.

One Jew who goes by the name UOJ has taken the Bull by the Horns and changed the dynamics of how we look upon sexual molestation and how it's dealt with. In the process of bringing this to the forefront, there has been collateral damage. A lot of sh*it which we already were aware of, and a lot of which we were not.

    My point is:

Kol yisroel areivim ze lazeh! UOJ and others have LIVED those words.

How many of those commenting here have done YOUR share? How many when informed upon a Molester; try to rationalize or excuse the crime?

Just recently, someone told me that KOLKO is innocent. And what brings you to that conclusion I ask him? Because I heard Rabbi Balkany speaking on the Zev Brenner show say - That even if there is a 10% chance that kolko is innocent, than we must assume he is innocent. Those who say Kolko is guilty do not know. There are former students who seek revenge and are just out to ruin the good name of Kolko and others.

What a Chutzpah! This is the same Balkany who's illegal activities is not something to write home about; never mind finding anything coming out of his ugly mouth as being credible.

    ''' Unforgiven '''

If you would be willing to participate in demonstrating against Yeshiva Torah Temima and other such toilet schools, please speak up. Even if there are 20 of us, it would speak great volumes.

  80. I like that turtle analogy with Gornish. The same thing has been said of Vicky Polin. She comments frequently on blogs, except when something surfaces about her. The cat got her tongue now that the video surfaced on YouTube and Naomi Ragen accused her of burning her on monetary loans. Yori Yanover mirrored the video on his blog before YouTube was threatened with a copyright lawsuit by Oprah. And speaking of copyrights, I think Vicky should give over control of her website to someone more responsible unless she either comes forth with an explanation or apologizes. If not, maybe someone can start another site with her material which is not copyrighted. Meanwhile it must be getting stuffy in that turtle shell.
