STEFAN COLMER and the BUGS in the WATER...NEW BOOK FOR TORAH TEMIMAH STUDENTS BY ART SCROLL.."MESORAH" SERIES

THIS BOOK SPONSORED IN PART(LOWER PART)...AND WITH MUCH LOVE BY THE TENDLER FAMILY AND YESHIVA BIRCAS YITZCHOK - LOS ANGELES...SHALOM TENDLER CHILDREN SUPERVISOR

A friend and reader writes......

I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist. And I don't want to be accused of practicing any of those fine scientific/medical professions without a license. But in my life experiences, I've noticed something about passionate, vocalized extremism. When someone is expressing very passionate views, and they are doing it loudly or emotionally and it strikes the average person as being "over the top," it usually means one of two things: Either the speaker has "drunk the kool-aid," meaning that they believe what they are saying totally, or they using this intense and extreme expressiveness to cover up their own deficiencies in practice or belief.

Some examples will help explain what I mean. Congressman Mark Foley was passionate and outspoken in his public speeches attacking sexual predators and then it turned out he was a sexual predator preying on underage male Congressional pages. I remember many years ago in my shul, a long-time member got up at a meeting and railed against the shul not being frum enough, not doing enough to make sure the children of the community were frummer, etc. He said things that raised many eyebrows given the fact that he was not that wildly frum himself. Many people could not figure out where this was coming from. Two weeks later, he left his wife and kids and ran off with his non-Jewish black secretary. His actions that day explained a lot about his performance at the meeting two weeks earlier.

I write this because I knew Stefan Colmer, not well and not intimately, but enough to recognize his face and name and to have spoken to him a few times. He was a computer consultant doing occasional work for a firm I was with. I also saw him at a midtown mincha minyan from time to time.

It was at that mincha minyan some time ago that we started talking about water filters and bugs in the water in Flatbush. Because the water panic had come on the heels of the Indian-hair sheitel panic – which, according to most poskim, turned out to be misguided and overblown – I was naturally skeptical of "trafe water." While I was not well-read on the subject, I expressed my opinion that the panic was overblown, and that microscopic particles of whatever in the water cannot be halachically impermissible. He argued passionately that I was factually wrong, (I may have been,) and that these things were visible to the naked eye. He told me he was installing filters and was using bottled water for drinking and cooking until then. He spoke passionately about having to live a proper life of halacha and adhering to all the rules and piskei halacha of our Gedolim.

I have thought back to that conversation many times since the revelations here - and subsequently in the press - of his alleged vile sexual misconduct against yeshiva boys, which was taking place about the time that we had that conversation. Excuse my sarcasm, but I'm so glad that while he was allegedly molesting young yeshiva students, Stefan was not imbibing in bug-laden, trafe water. What a tzaddik!

This is such a bullshit comment.
So in other words, any one with conviction has it cause they really are fucked up?

So by your statement, you fight predators so much cause you are one also? That's freakin' moronic, dude!

Listen, what you do to fight the sexual predators is wonderful.
But walking a middle line & being lukewarm about anything is the first step to the grave!

  3. I've found this to always be true. The worst offenders rail the loudest against their own offenses. Like they can't see what they themselves are doing.

I have had 2 men in my shul who were adamant about morality, etc. One was found to be having an affair with a neighbor. The other was arrested for seeing high price escorts on his lunchhours and as he traveled for work.

    hmmmm.....

  5. Abuse victims turned to Mahony in anger, pain
As lawyers worked on a payout, the archbishop met individually with more than 70 victims.

By Rebecca Trounson, Tami Abdollah and John Spano, Times Staff Writers

    July 30, 2007

They arrived at the civil courthouse in downtown Los Angeles with their spouses, their parents, girlfriends or siblings. One group of childhood friends, now in their 50s, came together; as girls, they had been molested by the same priest.

Some sought an apology, others reconciliation. And some just hoped to vent their outrage and be heard, directly, by Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, who has headed the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles since 1985.

"I wanted to speak on behalf of myself and others who couldn't do it for themselves," said Mark Gauer, 47, who said in a lawsuit he was sexually abused by a priest at his Catholic school, Los Angeles' Daniel Murphy High School.

For the last year, as attorneys have battled over the size and details of an ultimately record-breaking clergy abuse settlement by the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Mahony has met individually with more than 70 of those who sued him. The purpose, according to Minnesota lawyer Jeffrey Anderson, who helped develop the protocol for such meetings in dioceses across the country, is to allow the abuse survivors to be heard and for the Catholic authority figure to experience the victims' pain.

"If they want to speak, it's only to apologize, not to explain," said Anderson, a clergy abuse litigation pioneer who represented some of the Los Angeles plaintiffs. "They are there to listen."

As Mahony announced the $660-million agreement two weeks ago, he said the sessions had helped him understand the human toll of the abuse and had propelled him toward a settlement.

Through his spokesman, Tod M. Tamberg, Mahony declined last week to speak further about the meetings, except to say that more are scheduled. "He has said he will meet with any victim who wants to meet with him," Tamberg said.

Some plaintiffs say they have no desire to do so. "I would relish an opportunity to tell Mahony, one-on-one, what I think of him," said Lee Bashforth, 37, who said in his lawsuit that he was molested by former priest Michael Wempe for nearly 10 years, beginning when Bashforth was 7. "But that would mean playing into [Mahony's] massive P.R. machine, and I refuse to do that."

Representatives of a victims support group, the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, said they have cautioned members against meeting with Mahony, saying such discussions could cause them further harm. And at least two attorneys representing multiple plaintiffs in the latest settlement also have discouraged their clients, saying they do not believe the meetings are beneficial.

But dozens of other abuse victims have met with Mahony, in sessions primarily arranged by lawyer Raymond Boucher's office and mediated by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charles W. McCoy. Boucher was lead attorney for the plaintiffs. The meetings have taken place in McCoy's chambers, and several victims who participated praised the judge for his sensitive handling of the often tense, emotional discussions.

In interviews since the July 16 settlement, eight abuse survivors spoke about the meetings, their reasons for attending and their views of what took place. Some of them asked that their full names be withheld or that only their initials be used to protect their privacy.

Although their reactions varied — some said they found the sessions healing; others said they were unable to forgive Mahony or the church he represents — none said they regretted taking part.

Erin Brady, a 48-year-old public schoolteacher in the San Gabriel Valley, said that Mahony was "not compassionate" in their mid-February meeting but that the session nonetheless served a purpose.

"I felt good that I was able to say what I wanted to say," said Brady, who claimed in her lawsuit that she was abused by a priest at Immaculate Conception Church in Monrovia from age 8 to 11. "It wasn't good for me because of Mahony, but he did sit there and take it from me — and I was not easy on him. I give him credit for that."

Brady and several others said they had used the meetings to berate Mahony for what they described as his role in shielding abusive priests from justice and in unnecessarily delaying a legal settlement during 4 1/2 years of negotiations.

"Jesus wouldn't have an attorney," Gauer said he told Mahony in a 90-minute meeting in March. " 'This should have been settled a long time ago,' I told him."

Gauer, whose father was head of the archdiocese's Holy Name Society and a spokesman for the Citizens for Decency Through Law, an anti-pornography group, said he told Mahony how he was abused at the age of 14 at hotels, where he had gone with the priest on business trips.

According to Gauer's wife, Cecilia, who attended the meeting, Mahony said a few times: "I really do feel bad this happened to you."

"His words were, 'I will take responsibility for what has happened,' " she said. "But he never said 'I'm sorry.' "

Still, Gauer said the session "was worth about a year's worth of therapy."

Another victim, Mary Dispenza, a retired nun who was raped by Father George Rucker in the auditorium of St. Alphonsus school when she was 7, said she told the cardinal when she met him, "I wonder what Jesus would have done in your shoes."

Dispenza, 67, said the cardinal told her that once he became familiar with her abuser's personnel file, he was shocked to learn that the priest had remained in ministry so long. Rucker, who retired from Corpus Christi Church in Pacific Palisades within a year of Mahony's arrival to head the Los Angeles archdiocese, was banned from public ministry by Mahony five years ago.

"We are all as sick as our secrets," Dispenza recalled telling Mahony in response. "And an organization is as sick as its secrets. The church must bring this dark chapter to light."

She said he listened, later telling her of the safeguards the Los Angeles archdiocese and others have adopted in recent years to prevent further abuse of children.

In response, she began to paraphrase a verse from the Bible, saying that for anyone who harmed a child, "it is better for him to have a millstone fastened around his neck and be cast into the sea." Mahony finished reciting the passage with her. At the end of the session, they embraced.

Not all the sessions went so well.

Dominic Zamora, 34, his parents, Frank and Virginia, and his girlfriend Tamara Brantley filed into the late-afternoon meeting in May, shunning the cardinal, who offered his hand to them.

"I pulled my hand down and said 'I ain't got words for you,' " said Dominic Zamora, who said he blames his history of alcoholism, drug abuse and stints in jail on the childhood abuse. "I told Mahony, 'I didn't dress up like this to impress you. I dressed up because I have respect for the judge.' "

Zamora's family, in a lawsuit, said Dominic was abused by Michael Stephen Baker. The now-defrocked priest said in interviews with The Times that he told Mahony in 1986 that he had a problem with sexual abuse but that the cardinal allowed him to stay in ministry after treatment and later transferred him to nine other parishes. He is accused of molesting 23 boys and girls between 1974 and 1999.

Over nearly two hours, Zamora said, Mahony repeatedly apologized, telling the family that he considered Baker his worst problem.

At one point, the cardinal asked Zamora what he wanted from him, according to Zamora's father. "Dominic told him, 'You can't bring me my childhood back,' " the father said.

"He says to forgive and forget," Dominic added. "I said, 'I ain't at no AA meeting.' "

The Zamora family said Mahony was silent and looked down through most of the session, playing with his fingers.

"I asked him, 'What would you do if it'd been a family member on your side? What would you do?' " Virginia Zamora said. "You'd want that person to get locked up and the key thrown away."

Mahony, she said, made no response.

Two sisters, Elizabeth, 56, and Mary, 51, arrived full of anger for their February meeting. But they said they felt a real connection with Mahony as he looked through old photographs that showed them, as children, with their abuser, Brother Joe Stadtfeld. In one, the monk was holding Elizabeth, then in grade school, on his lap, giving her a kiss.

They also shared with the cardinal several letters from Stadtfeld, who died in 1995, asking for their forgiveness. "No longer did it feel like we were alleged victims," Elizabeth said of the meeting. "We felt that [Mahony] believed, that he believed that this happened."

Mary also told Mahony that she hoped to return to some form of spirituality but that because of the abuse, she could no longer believe in the Catholic church.

The response from the leader of L.A.'s Catholics surprised her. "He said to me, 'The Catholic church is not the only church,' " Mary said.

Other victims also arrived for their meetings furious with the church and with Mahony, they said.

"I went there very cynical, very angry at the church and at what had happened to me," said A.L., 43, a Los Angeles career counselor who was abused for seven years, starting at age 6, by Rucker and who met Mahony in June 2006. "But when we were in that room together, it was the most amazing experience. Mahony was moved by what I said, and it was healing, absolutely healing for me."

The woman said she forced herself to speak frankly to the cardinal about the trauma caused by the abuse, including her difficulty with intimacy and with forms of touching she cannot bear. "It was very uncomfortable for us both, but I told him this will cause me problems for the rest of my life," she said.

As she spoke, Mahony's eyes reddened and filled with tears, she said. "He was moved and I was moved by his response," she said. "I don't blame him for the abuse itself. I was angry with him for the whole thing, for not stopping [Rucker], for not stopping the others."

She said she was certain after meeting Mahony that he regretted his mistakes and those of the church in the abuse scandal. She asked if she could hug him and did so, as the session ended.

"I saw a human side to this person, and I can forgive and let it go," she said.

  6. I also knew Stefan Colmer from around the neighborhood. All I can say is, I told you so… I always knew something was strange about the man. The constant preaching and fanatical views of religion made me ill. After davening we would sometimes have debates over his ideas which clearly took things to a degree not even practiced by most Rabbonim.

Had I known who he really was, I doubt I would have been seen even talking to him. But In retrospect, who Stefan Colmer really was doesn’t surprise me.

  7. Audit finds parishes mishandled money

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A handful of parishes in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego deliberately concealed or inappropriately handled about $500,000 in funds in sometimes "purposeful attempts" to circumvent federal bankruptcy proceedings, according to an auditor's report.

The San Diego diocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Feb. 27, just hours before going to trial in more than 140 lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by priests. The filing automatically halted court proceedings in the lawsuits.

Church finances, specifically the question of how much the diocese is worth, has been hotly contested since the bankruptcy petition, which came after four years of unsuccessful settlement negotiations.

The "openly questionable activities" appear to be limited to a small number of parishes and most pastors and lay personnel demonstrate a good faith effort to comply with church financial procedures, the report said.

Still, the 175-page report published late Monday found no overall system of accounting throughout the diocese.

"As a result (church officials) are often woefully unaware of the specific financial operations of individual parishes," the report said.

With nearly 1 million Catholics and holdings throughout San Diego County, the diocese here is by far the largest and, by all accounts, the wealthiest of the five U.S. dioceses to have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under the shadow of civil claims over sexual abuse.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Louise DeCarl Adler ordered the examination of the diocese's finances in April.

"This is the most Byzantine accounting system I've ever seen," he said at the time."I am mystified."

Messages left with attorneys for the diocese and alleged victims for comment on the report were not immediately returned early Tuesday.

Attorneys for the alleged victims have repeatedly accused the diocese of not being forthcoming about its finances, while the diocese has argued it simply does not know its net worth.

The report, compiled by financial expert R. Todd Neilson, marks the first time a diocese under federal bankruptcy protection has been subjected to such outside financial review. Lawyers will be able to question Neilson at a hearing scheduled for Aug. 23.

According to the auditor's report, the 98 parishes in the diocese maintain more than 900 accounts.

In April, the judge chastised church lawyers for a lack of transparency in court filings and for failing to include 770 parish accounts in bankruptcy documents.

Among his findings, Neilson said three parishes "engaged in openly questionable activities."

Neilson said Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Calexico, for example, set in motion a series of transactions that deliberately concealed nearly $50,000 from the bankruptcy court. He said the church engaged in a "purposeful attempt ... to evade the direction of the Court to report all cash available."

Neilson also scolded St. Mary of El Centro Parish for parceling a $300,000 donation into six separate cashier checks as a "purposeful attempt ... to circumvent the intent and direction of the Court request on transparency in the recognition of financial cash balances by all of the parishes.

"It is especially unfortunate that just eight days after the Debtor's bankruptcy the pastor and the Parish Finance Council would engage in such deliberately misleading behavior," Neilson wrote.

The auditor found the finances of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel San Ysidro Parish "perplexing."

He said the parish has maintained it is one of the poorest in the diocese, yet holds $1.2 million in parish local bank accounts. Neilson said that sum is only exceeded by one other parish in the diocese.

That is "certainly not indicative of an impoverished parish unable to pay their obligations to the Debtor," the report said.

The diocese cooperated with the independent audit.

Earlier this month, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles agreed to pay $660 million to settle abuse claims in the largest payout yet. Cardinal Roger Mahony has said the settlement will not have an impact on local ministries and that no parish properties or schools will be sold to cover the $250 million the archdiocese will pay outright.

I am starting to get very suspicious about R' Luzer Weiss who heads Kosher Enforcement at NYS Agri. I'm wondering if the Agudah and friends are pressing him to let major scandals stay "under the carpet" if they are with unzerra. R' Luzer Weiss has gone after frey violators with a fury but Finkel escaped with no charges against him and the basar be'cholov scandal at Maimonides Hospital was hushed up and possibly not even completely fixed.

Gantz Boro Park was eating treif and may still be at that dumpy hospital.

  13. Luzer Weiss backed off when he found out who invested in Shevach.

Goldwasser was involved in a famous Din Torah where he was accused of being a loan shark. He was charging 400% interest on his loans.

He was never taken to court because Rabbi Horowitz threatened the aggrieved party.

Fellow community members, let us go after Mrs. Finkel assets, her fathers assets, and purge our community of this illness once and for all.

JERUSALEM(AP) - An Israeli government offer of a new $20 monthly stipend for Holocaust survivors provoked outrage Tuesday, with survivors charging the meager allowance will do nothing to make up for years of neglect of the 240,000 Israelis who lived through Nazi horrors.

Survivors have long claimed that European countries treat them far better than Israel, where many elderly survivors live in poverty. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's announcement of the new allowance did nothing to change that impression. One survivor called the offer "absurd and insulting."

Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II. Hundreds of thousands who survived concentration camps came to Israel after the war. Many suffered physical or psychological damage from the torture and deprivation they suffered at the hands of the Nazis.

Six decades after the war ended, the remaining survivors are elderly, and many have been unable to provide for themselves in their final years, suffering chronic shortages of money for medical and psychological treatment and in some cases even food.

Israel TV showed video of an 85-year-old survivor who said the only meat he could afford was chicken necks.

Olmert presented his program as a solution.

"We are correcting a 60-year-old blight," he said. "Holocaust survivors living in Israel are entitled to live respectably without reaching a situation in which it is beyond their means to enjoy a hot meal."

Beginning next year, the amount allocated for 120,000 needy survivors, about half the total number still living in Israel, will be $28 million annually, according to Olmert's statement.

But that works out to an average of just $20 a month for each survivor.

"Of course the survivors cannot accept such an offer," said Dubby Arbel, chairman of the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Survivors in Israel. Arbel said about 65,000 survivors are in acute need of assistance, but his foundation can provide for only half of them.

Many survivors were outraged. "This doesn't solve anything," said survivor Avraham Roet, 79. "The government doesn't understand the significance of the Holocaust and what horrors the survivors went through. If they did, they wouldn't propose this absurd and insulting plan," he told The Associated Press.

The new payment is in addition to government support already given to survivors, including those deemed physically or psychologically handicapped, and regular pension payments of about $487 a month.

Survivors groups charged — in what was meant to be an especially painful dig at the Israeli government — that survivors are treated better in Germany.

"We know what the conditions of the Holocaust survivors are in Holland, France, Germany and Poland. They are much better than in Israel," Noah Frug, chairman of a consortium of Holocaust survivors' organizations and a survivor himself, told Israel Radio.

Hillary Kessler-Godin, spokeswoman for Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, said Germany still pays monthly pensions to 80,000 survivors around the world, after starting in the 1950s.

"Each survivor's pension can be different depending on their persecution history," she told the AP. Other funds have paid out billions of dollars to various categories of Nazi victims.

Roet said the average stipend for survivors in Holland, where he was born, is between $2,740 and $4,110 a month.

Arbel urged Olmert to raise the allowance "for the sake of Jewish identity and Zionist identity, and so that we can all tell our grandchildren that we took care of the Holocaust survivors."

"For 42 years I received nothing from the state," survivor Kathleen Schwartz, 71, told the newspaper Haaretz. "This grant has arrived too late for thousands of survivors. Time is working against us."

Critics maintain that more of the nearly $80 billion in reparations Israel has received in compensation from Germany should have gone to the survivors. A large percentage of the money, which was paid beginning in the 1950s as Israelis struggled to build their fledgling state, went to the military and for infrastructure.

When they moved in they were newlyweds. I had heard rumors about him molesting young boys and at that point he moved down the street to another apartment. I remember that his wife had a baby. 22. Perhaps if there was community support for the "other victims" of molesters - their families, relatives, friends and non-molested students- more victims would feel comfortable publicizing their traumatic abuse. They would not have to worry as much about the pain of these unfortunate victims in hearing the truth and would realize that the lie that people like Mrs. Colmer were forced to live was its own kind of hell, and that now maybe she will be able to escape to something better.

  24. To the above anon at 6:46, and uoj,
    well said! I agree 100%.

people dont realize how much suffering and pain the family members of these monsters go through, wether its leizerowitz getting lapdances from 14 year olds or mondrowitz literally murdering young boys, for he is responsable if any of his victims ever commit suicide (which has occured) its on his head, to kolko abusing his many victims, and the list goes on and on all the while more of these monsters families are affected, parents, wives, children that have to live their life with the shame of their fathers monsterous sins.

But this I beleive is one of the reasons why the rabbonim are so against this whole issue of publicizing an abusers name, for their twisted thinking is that it will only cause uncalled for greif to his family, and while they are out there to protect the monsters family the monster is creating more victims for noone knew that he is a sick man and they need to keep their children away from him.

So either way you look at it were all screwed, victims and family members of these monsters alike, so I feel if he does not protect his family from such shame then why should we, we have one obligation and that is to see to it that no molester goes by unpunished, and if shaming his family is what it takes then so be it, we have to protect our children!!

Lets not forget the enablers of these monsters, they do not have this sickness, and chose to keep the info given to them quiet for various reasons, to them no shame ever brought upon them will ever be enough, they should be rotting in prison for the rest of their shamed lives, and then on to hell.

  26. Warning to men in BoroPark
Ohel Family Services has in the last few years been getting many government grants.
One of them was for the purpose of opening a domestic violence center. In order to justify the money they receive Ohel must ensnare woman to come for counseling under the pretense that they are being abused. Ohel hires social workers and counselors and makes a nice fee off this. Once they sink their claws into the woman they don't let go very easy because this is a major profit center for them. It can evolve into profit from divorce counseling, children counseling and the list goes on.

Here are the signs to look for if you suspect that your wife is getting involved with Ohel.

Modus operendi: The counselor will first try to get the woman to get her own cell phone so she can contact her discreetly. The counselor has the woman call Ohel at 718 851 6300 and leave a message for the counselor. The counselor will then call back with the appointment time probably when the husband is at work so he wont find out that they are sucking in his wife. Ohel will not come up on the caller id. The caller id will come up as 718646. If you see that your wife has called 718 851 6300 and then has a call back of 718646 you will know that she is in touch with Ohel and you better take action before its to late. Ohel will give her articles, books and lists of items to convince her that she is being abused. You will then hear her use words and talk in ways that she was not familiar with before. Watch out for these signs.

This is being published for the benefit of the Jewish Community by Ohel Insider. I hope to post more information about Ohel and names of its counselors in the future. Anyone else that has information should also share it for the benefit of the community. This is a major scandal ready to break open. The Rabanim are unfortunately all quit about this. Some are paid fat salaries by Ohel to condone what they do. Call Ohel to protest this behavior.

    Monsey Kashrut (Kashrus) a Disaster
It has happened again. Another Monsey store has been selling non kosher food. This time it wasn't meat it was dairy and parve(?). The Kol Tuv Pizza store (Corner of Saddle River Road and Route 59) has been selling pizza with Treifah ingredients.

In the local "Community Connections" there was a notice from Rabbi Ungar that Kol Tuv Pizza was no longer under his "supervision". There was no indication as to what the problem was. Nobody else took over the Hashgacha and the store was closed.

This past Thursday evening we acquired the following letter:

    MESSAGE TO ALL CUSTOMERS
    Shiva Asar B'Tamuz - July 3, 2007
THE OWNERS OF KOL-TUV PIZZA AND RESTAURANT
HEREBY EXPRESS REGRET AND REMORSE FOR
SERVING IT'S(Sic) PAST CUSTOMERS NON KOSHER FOODS,
PRODUCTS COOKED OR PREPARED WITH TREIFA
INGREDIENTS AND BISHUL AKUM [PREPARED BY A
GOY] DURING THE PAST 3 YEARS.
WE ASK MECHILA FROM ANY PERSON WHO MAY HAVE
BEEN AFFECTED BY OUR WRONGDOINGS, AND
    ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS.
    REGRETFULLY,
    MR. & MRS. ISAAC FISHMAN
    MONSEY

Why hasn't there been an uproar over this as there was over the Chicken scandal? The theory that I have heard, is that Rabbi Ungar is a Square Chussid and Rabbi Breslauer is not a Chussid.
We don't want to offend our fellow Chassidim!!!
The level of incompetence in the Hashgacha business is unbelieveable. All Rabbi Ungar had to do was to check invoices to make sure that kosher cheese was being bought. But it seems that in New Square they are not sufficiently proficient in the English language to be able to read an invoice.
Is there any trustworthy Hashgacha in Monsey?

Monsey Rabonim are allowing the people to use the Monsey Shatnez Center on Treetop. It was established that he is being "machshil" the consumer, as he DOES NOT know the basics of Shatnez testing.

As an asides: Reb Mordechai Orbach is fully aware of the Shatnez Mich'shul from the Treetop Shatnez Center-and has opted to join the others & ignore the situation. Reb Mordechai, Shlita has learned the basic art of shatnez sample taking so he would be more to blame.

The Rabonim saw the proofs themselves it did not require relying on me or the other SHATNEZ experts.

Orbach learned Shatnez testing, I spoke to him "bi'ah'richus"
and he decided that I should put up $5,000.00 dollars in escrow, then he'll decide to look into it and decide if his shul members among other Monsey residents can wear Shatnez, or something to that effect. GO FIGURE! I'M LOST.

In order for Rabbi Mordechai Orbach to weesil out from confronting the Shatnez issue (which wouldn't bring him fame"now it brings him "shame") he decided on blackmailing others to put up $ 5,000.00 in escrow-in order for him to look into the matter "as a disinterested party".

Why didn't he ask the Treetop Shatnez tester to put up $25,000.00 for ads & to pay for retesting of all garments?

I think that Reb Mordechai Orbach had some other Rabonim with him (Rabbis Kokis, Zimmerman ).

    The Blackmail didn't work.

    No blackmail, no problem.

The Monsey Rabbonim were asked By a Lakewood yungerman (Bressler) to investigate this Parsha for the second time.

The rabbonim felt that it would be irresponsible to investigate this issue every few years. Kreitman (the tester)has heart problems and his family definitely do not deserve to be slandered every time someone wants to open an investigation.

the Rabbonim asked for this yungerman to put $5000 in escrow.
    F
ollowing the investigation, if the rabbonim would find that there is a problem then they would obviously return the $. If this would turn out to be another "red Herring" this $ would be used to insert full page ads in the Hamodia and Yated for several weeks, that the Rabbonim looked into this matter and it turned out to be Moitzey Shaim Rah. At this point
    the yungerman chickened out.

Reb Yidel Shlit"a was not involved at any time.

No blackmail, no problem.YES BLACKMAIL IN THE FIRST DEGREE BY R' MOTEL ORBACH ET AL

The Monsey Rabbonim were asked By a Lakewood yungerman (Bressler) to investigate this Parsha for the second time. NOT THE SAME RABONIM-THE FIRST TIME THAT YUDEL SHAIN ASKED THE VIZNITZER REBBE TO INVESIGATE-R' MOTEL ORBACH WASN'T IN THE PICTURE.

The rabbonim felt that it would be irresponsible to investigate this issue every few years. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS PROVEN BEYOND ANY DOUBT THAT HE WAS BEING MACHSHIL THE TZIBUR. LISTEN TO IT AT 212-990-7238

Kreitman (the tester)has heart problems and his family definitely do not deserve to be slandered every time someone wants to open an investigation.
HE HAS BEEN MACHSHIL THE WHOLE OF mONSEY FOR SOME 25-30 YEARS.

the Rabbonim asked for this yungerman to put $5000 in escrow.WHICH YIUNGERMAN? BRESSLER WAS "USED" AS A CONDUIT (BY R' MOTEL) TO BLACKMAIL SHAIN & THE INTERNATIONAL SHATNEZ TESTERS ETC.

Following the investigation, if the rabbonim would find that there is a problem then they would obviously return the $. If this would turn out to be another "red Herring" this $ would be used to insert full page ads in the Hamodia and Yated for several weeks, that the Rabbonim looked into this matter and it turned out to be Moitzey Shaim Rah. THAT IS A LIE! THE COLD FACTS WERE THERE TIME & TIME AGAIN.

At this point the yungerman chickened out. WHICH YUNGERMAN CHICKENED OUT? REB MOTEL? YOU ARE RIGHT.

Reb Yidel Shlit"a was not involved at any time. ONLY THE FIRST AND 2ND & 3RD ETC. IT'S ONLY THAT THE RABONIM AREN'T READY TO FACE THE MUSIC.

WHER IS REB MOTEL, HE LEARNED SHATNEZ TESTING BY ROSENBERGER & HE DID IT IN TORONTO-HE COULD ASCERTAIN IT ON HIS OWN. THE INTERNATIONL SHATNES TESTERS WERE WILLING TO LEND THEIR EXPERTISE.
THE ISRAELI SHATNEZ LABS CONCLUDED THAT THE MONSEY TREETOP TESTER WOULD HAVE TO UNLEARN WHAT HE THINKS HE KNOWS & LEARN EVERYTHING NEW BY THEM OVER A 2 YEAR PERIOD.

  35. I was raised in Boro Park. I was sexually abused by a Rabbi named Heshy Nussbaum. He taught at Toras Emes in Boro Park, Brooklyn, NY. He was at one time head counselor of a camp in upstate NY. When I was little I cared for him very much. He used to take children including me and have
them sit next to his desk and fondle us. I thought this was a
privilege. Is he still alive today? This is the very example how we are deceived to believe that Rabbi's are Tzadik's and we should trust them.
Reality is they are just human's. What we need is to teach our children if someone touches you in the area where you are not supposed to be touched, to tell us as a parent. We will not scold the child. Children as a rule do not lie.

He went into hashgochos as a mashgiach for the COR which is owned by the secular Canadian Jewish Congress. I don't keep up with him but he may very well still be working for them.

I do know for a fact that he has been chasing after young boys who are not frum to befriend and hang out with them. He raises a lot of eyebrows and people who figured that this "rabbi-type" must be up to no good have physically threatened him.

He has also been seen in suspicious circumstances with goyim in areas he probably never expected any Jew to be.

FRUM BOYS AND GIRLS GONE WILD

South Fallsburg, NY - Five Summer Residents Busted at "Party House"

South Fallsburg, NY - Police arrested five men after getting complaints about a house in South Fallsburg where kids were being served alcohol and people were smoking marijuana.

Fallsburg police got the calls and went to the address on Laurel Avenue in South Fallsburg.
When they arrived they broke up a large party at the house, and arrested five men, the oldest people at the party, and some of them had supplied the alcohol to the younger party-goers, all summer residents.

David Huebner, 18, and Chesky Schwartz, 18, both of Brooklyn, and Chaim Saxton, 21, of Monsey were charged with misdemeanors of endangering the welfare of a minor, unlawfully dealing with a child and possession of stolen property.

Klevan Mayer, 18, of Brooklyn was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of governmental administration. A 17-year-old Brooklyn boy was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. All five are free pending appearances in Fallsburg Town Court. [Record]

    And this....

    Rabbi Malchiel said...
This past Motzoei Shabbos, July 28, I received a phone call from a Brooklyn Rav asking me to gather some friends and their wives and go to Broadway (the main street) in Monticello in order to provide some adult supervision and responsible sets of eyes to the “scene” in front of a pool hall situated there.

I got there at about 12:45 a.m. – at least fifteen minutes before any of our friends arrived. As I was the only Orthodox adult present at the time, I got an unvarnished look at the proceedings. What I saw was beyond my wildest nightmares. Inside the pool hall and spilling out into the street were hundreds of frum boys and girls hanging out, cavorting, drinking, and snorting drugs.

The kids ran the full range of Orthodox Jewry – children from very chassidish to Modern Orthodox homes. The behavior of the boys and the dress code of the girls were simply beyond belief. In fact, it was hard to believe that these were frum kids – until you spoke to them.

Please don’t think for a moment that this was a gathering of only “at-risk kids.” Dozens of cars stopped by, and what you would call mainstream boys and girls got out to see what was going on. Many of them joined the party, at least as observers. A few of the kids told us that they and their friends rented bungalows in non-Jewish colonies or rooms in hotels throughout the Catskills where they party from Thursday night until Monday morning – including Shabbos.

We circulated among the kids and tried talking to them, begging them to come home with us. We offered them a place to stay and some food to eat – for the night, or perhaps an invitation for the coming Shabbos. It was most painful to see that underneath the bravado and in-your-face mannerisms were scared kids and tortured Yiddishe neshamos.

How do we teach our children to be law-abiding citizens when Jewish society honors people involved in molestation, cover-ups, defrauding thousands of innocent people, burning down their businesses for insurance purposes etc. etc.???

How do we teach the value of family purity, the sanctity of marriage, marital fidelity, when the teens parents are hooking up with chat partners, swapping wives etc. and the same individuals are being slobbered over by the frum society as “Sheine Yidden”?

How do we teach our children to value others people money, as they value their own, to value human life, to value every human being right to exist, and yet have members involved in loan shark operations???

  69. Why not have Tannenbaum speak at graduation? Moshe Eisemann is living freely (not for long) on the Ner Israel campus. Margulies has not been lynched! The Tendlers are still around women and kids! Neuberger is still covering for Eisemann (not for long). Kolko is still able to walk! Shlomo Shraga Feivel Shustal is going back to Torah Temima when he should have resigned as soon as Kolko was arrested or sooner if he was aware of the coverup.
Nothing ever really changes, does it?

  70. I knew Stephen Colmer, as he lived on East 15th Street between Avenue R and the Dead End. I didn't know him well. He was always playing with little boys outside of his house before Shabbos. It seemed like harmless horse play and I had no idea what he was doing with them indoors.

I always felt very badly for his young wife. They moved to the block when they were first married. He seemed cold and distant from her and she seemed sad and lonely. She was a very sweet person. They then moved down the block to East 15th Street between Avenue R and Kings Highway. I recall that that his wife had a baby.

After that, not much was heard from them, although I subsequently heard that he molested a number of young boys who attended the Mir Yeshiva who lived on the block but their parents have kept it hush-hush.

  75. EVERYTHING FROM CHINA IS SUSPECT "ESPECIALLY" "KOSHER" FOOD!
    -----------

By ANNE D'INNOCENZIO and NATASHA T. METZLER, Associated Press Writers

WASHINGTON - Toy-maker Fisher-Price is recalling 83 types of toys — including the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters — because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead.

The worldwide recall being announced Thursday involves 967,000 plastic preschool toys made by a Chinese vendor and sold in the United States between May and August. It is the latest in a wave of recalls that has heightened global concern about the safety of Chinese-made products.

The recall is the first for Fisher-Price Inc. and parent company Mattel Inc. involving lead paint. It is the largest for Mattel since 1998 when Fisher-Price had to yank about 10 million Power Wheels from toy stores.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, David Allmark, general manager of Fisher-Price, said the problem was detected by an internal probe and reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall is particularly alarming since Mattel, known for its strict quality controls, is considered a role model in the toy industry for how it operates in China.

Fisher-Price and the commission issued statements saying parents should keep suspect toys away from children and contact the company.

The commission works with companies to issue recalls when it finds consumer goods that can be harmful. Under current regulations, children's products found to have more than .06 percent lead accessible to users are subject to a recall.

Allmark says the recall was "fast-tracked," which allowed the company to quarantine two-thirds of the toys before they even made it to store shelves. In negotiating details of the recall, Fisher-Price and the government sought to withhold details from the public until Thursday to give stores time to get suspect toys off shelves and Fisher-Price time to get its recall hot line up and running. However, some news organizations prematurely posted an embargoed version of the story online.

Allmark said the recall was troubling because Fisher-Price has had a long-standing relationship with the Chinese vendor, which had applied decorative paint to the toys. Allmark said the company would use this recall as an opportunity to put even better systems in place to monitor vendors whose conduct does not meet Mattel's standards.

He added: "We are still concluding the investigation, how it happened. ... But there will be a dramatic investigation on how this happened. We will learn from this."

The recall follows another high-profile move from toy maker RC2 Corp., which in June voluntarily recalled 1.5 million wooden railroad toys and set parts from its Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line. The company said that the surface paint on certain toys and parts made in China between January 2005 and April 2006 contain lead, affecting 26 components and 23 retailers.

"Anytime a company brings a banned hazardous product into the U.S. marketplace, especially one intended for children, it is unacceptable," said Nancy Nord, acting chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. "Ensuring that Chinese-made toys are safe for U.S. consumers is one of my highest priorities and is the subject of vital talks currently in place between CPSC and the Chinese government."

Carter Keithley, president of the Toy Industries Association, praised Mattel's quick response to the problem, and suggested Mattel will use this setback as a lesson for not only the company but for the entire industry. However, he expressed concern about how the recall and other toy recalls will play out in consumers' minds in advance of the holiday season.

"We are worried about the public feeling," said Keithley, adding he observed how toy companies are embracing strict controls during a recent toy safety seminar in China. "We have thought all along that (consumers) can be confident in the products," he said. "But if companies like Mattel have this, then you have to ask how did this happen?"

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., introduced a bill last month that he contended would dramatically expand the product safety commission's ability to protect consumers. In a statement Wednesday night, Durbin also called for better safety standards for products imported from China.

"Sadly, this is the most recent in a series of disturbing recalls of children's toys. While the toys may be different, they have one thing in common — they were manufactured in China," he said. "With the current tools and resources the Consumer Product Safety Commission has, it cannot adequately protect American consumers."

Owners of a recalled toy can exchange it for a voucher for another product of the same value. To see pictures of the recalled toys, visit http://www.service.mattel.com. For more information, call Mattel's recall hot line at 800-916-4498.

Most of us know by now how Mordy Tendler has been manipulating the courts in Ohio and California to find out the identities of several bloggers. Tendler has been ordered to pay the bloggers 42 grand for filing frivolous suits.

These papers filed with the court just two days ago reveal some new and hilarious details.

    1) When Tendler fired his out of state attorneys in a ploy to get out of paying damages, he listed his brother Hillel Tendler as his new counsel. When Hilly was contacted he denied he is representing him and provided the court with Mordy's home address.

    2) Tendler lied to the California Supreme Court about his Ohio lawsuit. The Ohio courts threw out his suit which Tendler nonetheless told California that the Ohio court demanded that Google identify users of Blogspot. When the courts asked Tendler why he filed suit in Ohio, a state that had nothing to do with anything, Tendler absurdly claimed that Rabbi Yosef Blau travelled to Ohio to write defamatory blog comments against him on a computer there. Tendler could not explain how he knows this and refused to say which comments were written by Rabbi Blau.

    You can't make this up.

  78. Rabbinical "Ban" on Hassidic Music Concerts

    by Hillel Fendel

Hassidic music stars Avraham Fried and Yaakov Shwekey are to perform in Jerusalem before an audience of over 10,000 Thursday night - but leading hareidi-religious Rabbis Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the Gerrer Rebbe and others say it's forbidden to participate or attend events of that nature.

Flashy posters all over Jerusalem and elsewhere advertise a high-powered Hassidic music concert scheduled for Thursday evening at Teddy Stadium. It features two of the genre's greatest stars, Fried and Shwekey, as well as guest appearances by Aharon Razel and the up-and-coming Elad Shaar. Called "L'Chaim in Jerusalem," the event commemorates the 40th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, and will feature an extra-large orchestra.

A damper was placed on the event, however, in the form of a rabbinic ban appearing in the hareidi-religious press. The ban is signed by leading rabbis including Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the Gerrer and Bezler Rabbis, Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, Rabbi Shmuel HaLevy Vozner, Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Sheinberg, and more. .

The Rabbincal statement reads: "We trembled at hearing about the terrible breach in our camp of 'music evenings' and 'concerts' in which musicians sing before men and women sitting together, Heaven forefend, and even not together. All Torah leaders have in the past clearly forbidden these events, even when men and women are separate."

The rabbis say the ban applies to men, women and children and of course the performers. Newspapers are not permitted to advertise these events, according to the ad, and musicians who sing "in front of men and women together" must not be invited to sing at other events.

A source close to one of the above rabbis told Arutz-7 he was unsure of the grounds for the ban. He opined that it could be because of the mixing of the genders outside the event, but added, "This is very puzzling, because why then is there a difference between performers - who are penalized only if they sing before a mixed crowd - and the general public, which is forbidden to attend under all circumstances?" Another source said that it was possibly the rock-and-roll atmosphere prevalent at events of this nature that might be the problem, though this was not mentioned in the ban.

One source said he believes one of the rabbis signed this ban several years ago, and that it was not presented to him again. Others expressed a lack of confidence in the entire system of "signed rabbinic decisions," in that it is not clear how the situation was presented to the rabbis. There have even been cases of rabbis who said their names were "signed" on various announcements without their permission.

"It is known that Rabbi Moshe Feinstein [the pre-eminent Torah authority in the U.S. in the 20th century - ed.] permitted events of this nature if the proceeds were for charity," a source close to one of the rabbis said, "as is the case in Thursday's concert, so I'm not sure how to understand this."

Producer Moshe Ben-Zimra told the NRG website in response: "Men and women will be totally separated at the event, including separate entrances, and everything is taking place under the supervision of great rabbis. I greatly respect the rabbis who signed the ban, but they were misled by their underlings whose purpose is simply to liquidate Hassidic music in Israel. The rabbis don't realize that this event is kosher and maintains the laws of modesty. Over 10,000 people have already bought tickets, and they can rely upon the Torah rabbis who support separate and modest events of this nature."

Meaning, when it causes you to raise your eyebrows and wonder why a person is expressing their views so intensely. "I will be attacked with ridicule from all sides. But what can I do? A fire is burning within me, and within a thousand Jews like me... A fire, which cannot be extinguished." .... Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz zt"l, the "architect" of Torah in America, written in the 1923.

" Lishmoa lillmod u'llelamed, lishmor v'laasos u'lkayem es kol divrei talmud torahsecha b'ahaava".... from the Ahava Raba in our daily tefillos.

Lillmod kdei llamed...We learn our holy Torah to be able to pass it on to our children for the generations. We learn the holy Torah, kdei likayim, in order to fulfill "all" of the learning of your (our) Torah with love!

Judaism is a religion of practice; Hashem did not gift us with the Torah to study for knowledge sake and then to discard the practices that separate us from the other nations of the world. We are to serve God so we can be better people for it.

The Torah is a prescription medicine for life, it was meant to be a cure-all for the illnesses that all humans suffer from. It was not meant to be a tool to hurt people, it was not meant to be used and abused to make money for our personal gain at the expense of the weak and the downtrodden. It was certainly not meant to punish the innocent with harm that will endure for a lifetime.

Rabbonnus was meant for the morally and ethically superior people in the mold of Moshe and Aaron; to lead us away from our temptations and human frailties.

It was not meant for people to capitalize on it to create institutions from public funds to enrich their personal fiefdoms.

As Moshe and Aaron "suffered" for being great; Moshe not being permitted to enter Eretz Yisroel and Aaron losing his two sons to a fiery death, we demand accountability and moral purity from our "leaders." Our leaders are NOT to be given a pass when their mistakes cause great harm to the masses. They, by their positions, are to pay a very dear price for their foibles. So much more so when their sins are either intentional or out of ignorance!

Yes, there's a fire in me that I can not extinguish, nor will I. We are hemorrhaging internally. The bleeding is getting worse as we continue to ignore the patient...all of Am Yisroel!

Our "doctors" are out to lunch and causing death and destruction to the people destined to be a light unto the world. They are mocking God by pretending to take care of the patients entrusted to them; but instead are injecting them with a spiritual poison.

Why have we not learned? How many more fake Moshiachists do we need to learn that we have been taken by the Moshiach hucksters who have seen him in a dream or a vision?

Why have we not learned that the people that predict the date of his arrival are cruel opportunists using religion as a form of crowd control to the ignorant?

Why have we not learned from the utter failure of the Chabad movement to bring authentic Judaism to the masses, and instead turned their organization into one big global soup kitchen?

Why have we not yet learned that "kollel" is for the mitzuyonim, the best and the brightest, and l'maan Hashem let's force the others to get up early and go to bed late learning Torah...but must earn a parnassah for their family?

When Rav Bick z"l cried out "the yeshivas are producing inferior humans", the Torah world went into a feeding frenzy; "what can you expect from a person who was a product of Y.U."?

Why have we not yet learned that we must reconcile science and Torah; When science contradicts Torah, Torah wins. But if we can reconcile the new scientific findings WITH the Torah, if we don't, the intelligent b'nei Torah among us will question the validity of the entire Torah?

Why have we not learned that the chitzonyus, the exterior, the l'vush, the clothing, is absolutely meaningless if our hearts are not pure. We can not clothe ourselves one way, when our actions are in total contradiction to the way we appear.

Why have we not learned that we were m'kabel the Torah at Sinai, which includes the Neviim and the K'suvim...all the rest that came later was NOT incorporated in our Torah. The feel-good writings of the various people are not Torah, they are theories of individuals, albeit many individuals. Z'miros does not take the place of learning. D'veykus and Tzimtzum are not theories that were given to us at Sinai. Being m'dabek to a human is Christianity and is not part of Judaism. To idolize a person is to violate the basic precepts of the Torah. Tzimtzum is in direct contradiction to the way the Torah describes the sheshes y'mei breishis.

And NO, I do not believe for one second that metziza b'peh is an integral part of the milah. The vast majority of Frum Jews would never permit their child to be subjected to that distortion of the emes. No, I do not believe for one second that Avraham Avinu performed metziza b'peh on himself! Some people who know better made a horrible judgment call when they decided to become the spokesmen for Satmar and that entire group of illiterates and peasants. Children are getting ill and dying and we're playing politics. Shame on you!

So I can not sit idly by as this fire is consuming me, but I will not let it destroy me...." V'heenei boer b'aish, v'hasneh aneinu ukal".

I see the Establishment yawning as the sex abuse issue goes un-addressed in a meaningful way.

Wake up from your slumber dear Yiden; "Aseh l'cha Rav"!!!!!!

Why have we not learned yet that there are "few" people who really care about Yiddishkeit, and genuinely love klal Yisroel even when there's no "profit" to be made?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Why have we not yet learned that "kollel" is for the mitzuyonim, the best and the brightest, and l'maan Hashem let's force the others to get up early and go to bed late learning Torah...but must earn a parnassah for their family?

This issue is at the heart of the problem of wayward teens. These children have been inculcated with the idea that kollel learning is for everybody, and if you cannot keep up and are not cut out for learning gemara, then you are a failure. I've heard the term "subpar" used by certain rabbanim describing any Jew that goes out to work instead of learning all day. They think that they are reinforcing the learners commitment to Torah by issuing such statements. Instead, they are giving a large number of children who are not "learners" an inferiority complex. Is it any wonder that many of these kids turn to a life of drugs and illicit sex? They feel rejected, demoralized and trampled upon by the yeshiva system. On top of that, they leave High School totally uneducated, both in Torah and secular education. Their choices are very limited as they grow older, and finding a shidduch becomes a nightmare, since no girl wants to marry someone who is "subpar".

These boys need to be encouraged and a different education system needs to be put in place for them. Rememeber, Yaakov Avinu blessed Zvulun before Yissachar. Both types of Jews are equally vital for the survival of klal yisroel. Nobody should ever be told that they are "subpar" or made to feel that way.

  86. This whole Kolko case has me sick, and not just because of the small children who were abused.

I'm sick because of the larger story, sick about what's happened to Judaism. Sick about how superficial stupidities have become the community's dominant concern. Sick about how the great ethics of our outstanding faith have been hijacked and subverted by fraudulently pious jackasses for their own selfish purposes. Sick about milquetoast Jews who are more devoted to order than to justice. Sick about the well-intentioned but useful idiots who teach small children or run small synagouges and happily prop up the whole rotted system because they are too timid, too lazy, and too stupid to do any different.

Elsewhere, for example, some bloggers and commenters are cluck-clucking about the way the case against Kolko was made and about the agenda of his enemies. They don't care about the substance of the accusations. Rather than investigate the claims of someone like UOJ, (the blogger who nailed Kolko to the wall) those bloggers and commenters prefer to speculate about UOJ's motivations, to disaprove of his tone, or worse, to investigate him.

This, not incidently, was the attitude displayed by the Jewish Press, a dreadful, laughingstock of a newspaper. In an editorial published on February 22, 2006 the paper went to war with the accuser. Did they bother to investigate the claims? Did they take any steps to guarantee the safety of the children who study at Yeshiva Torah Temimah? No, and no again. Order was more important than justice. UOJ and his allegations were rocking the boat, and causing people to lift up their heads, so let the children be damned.

Forty years ago the great Martin Luthor King wrote a letter from Birmingham jail in which he argued that non-violent tension is necessary for growth. In my lifetime, Orthodox Jews have always resisted tension, and by resisiting tension we also resist growth. Like the robotic suburbanites so many of us are, we go blissfully from our jobs to our homes to our shuls without ever examining or questioning the world around us and the myths that prop it up. We learn at an early age to smooth over difficulties, to ignore maculations, to couch our challenges in langauge that is acceptable to the establishment, to never say, "That's stupid;" but instead to say "That seems stupid to me." Lesson: the world around us is perfect; if it appears otherwise that's because there's something wrong with you, not with the world. Order. Not justice.

Elsewhere, our so-called leaders are inveighing against the Jewish blogosphere. At Internet asifa after Internet asifa, the leadership rises to complain, not about Internet predators, but about bloggers. It's not the child who may be assualted that animates Rabbi Ephraim Wachsman. Oh no. Instead he yells and screams about the foolish Flatbush shul Rabbi who was mortified to discover his own asinine remark published on Godol Hador's blog. Rabbi Wachsman screams and sputters about this because he knows the next stupid remarks reproduced on a blog for the amusment of the masses might be one of his own. That's what worries him. Not child molesters. Again, order, not justice.

I suppose it doesn't need to be said, that if Wachsman and his cronies had their way we'd have no Jewish blogosphere, no blogs like UOJ, and Kolko would still be riding high.

That, finally, is why the Jewish blogosphere matters, why we who count ourselves among this community must redouble our efforts. Not just for the sake of the children Kolko destroyed, but for the sake of all the Jewish men and women who die small deaths everyday because of acts of cruelty, stupidity, selfishness and injustice perpetrated by Jews. Let me close with a quote from Martin Luthor King which explains the value of blogging. He was speaking about non-violent protest, but I've brought his thought up-to-date, and I think this must be the answer to every well-meaning fool like LakewoodYid, and also to the less well-intentioned creeps who complain about bloggers and tear their shirts over loshan hara and issues of disrespect:
Actually, we who [blog] are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out in the open, where it can be seen and dealt with. Like a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be opened with its ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.

38 people sue former Casa del Lago owners

    By John Tompkins
    The Facts

    Published July 27, 2007

ANGLETON — The number of plaintiffs in a lawsuit against former owners of the Casa del Lago apartment complex is growing.

In their latest filing, an amendment to the original suit, attorneys for the 38 former residents of the complex are seeking damages on grounds of breach of contract, negligence, fraud and violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. They are asking for $2,500 in damages each plus attorney fees and punitive damages.

About 300 residents of the complex in the 100 block of Oyster Creek Drive in Lake Jackson were forced out of it in July 2006 after it was discovered to be infested with a colony of 1,000 Mexican free-tail bats, some of which tested positive for rabies. The apartments were quarantined by county health officials.

Many of the bats were trapped as part of an exclusion process and then sent to a bat sanctuary in Mineral Wells. The exclusion process also involved sealing up the holes the Mexican free-tailed bats had been using to get into the buildings.

Several residents, including three children, had to be tested for rabies with a painful series of injections, said Savannah Robinson, the residents’ attorney.

The owner at the time, Sam Pinter and Royale Property Management, moved the residents into local complexes in the Lake Jackson and Angleton areas.

The residents who have joined in the suit want compensation for items that were lost and damaged during the move from Casa del Lago as well as items damaged in apartments they were moved into, Robinson said.

“They were either broken or destroyed or stolen,” she said. “Some people lost possessions that were stolen during the break-ins.”

Pinter’s attorney, Gerson Bloom, said the residents do not have a good case, and the fact that they have amended their original suit five times reflects that.

“They can’t make up their minds,” he said.

Former Casa del Lago resident Melissa Stiles said the move was difficult and the situation in the Angleton apartment where she was moved was not better.

“It caused a lot of problems,” Stiles said of the move. “They did break some of our stuff. Some of our stuff got ruined because the apartments we moved to had a water leak in the bedroom.”

Calling Pinter a “slum lord” in the latest version of the suit, attorneys for the plaintiffs said he did not take care of the residents as he was supposed to under the law.

“He has a duty to protect people, which he failed miserably,” Robinson said. “Each of these families lost real money out their pockets.”

The residents also are looking to collect their deposits from the apartment they had at Casa del Lago, Robinson said.

Robinson has filed for a summary judgment, which is a motion to make a determination without a full trial in the case. A hearing is set for Aug. 28 in District Judge Pat Sebesta’s courtroom.

A Houston apartment complex owned by Pinter was shut down in April because of health and safety code violations.

Who's paying whom seems to be the question at the $285 million Grand Hyatt Hotel convention center construction site in downtown San Antonio.

Several subcontractors at the site say U.S. Structural Concrete Inc. of Austin — a main subcontractor on the job — owes them hundreds of thousands in back pay.

Hotel developer and general contractor FaulknerUSA of Austin claims it has paid its bills to U.S. Structural and even filed a lawsuit Wednesday alleging U.S. Structural executives were inappropriately diverting funds meant to go to the subcontractors.

An official with Pumpco, a concrete pourer from Denver, said the company is waiting for about $300,000 from U.S. Structural. And an official with Formwork Services Inc. said his company still is waiting for about $620,000.

Les M. Pinter, the CEO of U.S. Structural, resigned from the company earlier this month, according to his local attorney, R. Glenn Ayers.

FaulknerUSA's attorneys filed a lawsuit in Travis County on Wednesday against Pinter and Ferris stating defamation, fraud and civil conspiracy. Faulk- nerUSA said Pinter and Ferris were inappropriately diverting funds rather than paying outstanding amounts.

  89. Agudah to UOJ: Welcome Back

It appears that the Agudah, with their pathetic grasping at straws of controvery to appear relevant, has ressurected UOJ -- the Patron Saint of Children Who are Sexually Abused by Religious Figures and Those Who Harbor Them. UOJ, after being 'outed' this spring by some self-appointed thugs who believe themselves to be defenders of Torah and Gedolim, slipped into the background with a farewell post just before Rosh Hashonah. Sadly, it appeared as though UOJ would relegated to asterisk status in Jewish history, despite his valient and timely attacks on a viciously apathetic status quo that preferred the spiritual murder of Jewish children over decisive action.

And all was quiet as Rosh Yehivas, executive directors, and some yeshivishe egomaniacs in the sleepy slum of Waterbury, CT rejoiced at the miraculous bullet dodging they had just witnessed. Evidentally, the 'humiliation' weapon -- a thin reference to ruined shidduchim and tainted yichus -- had succeeded in preserving the perversity of ultra-orthodox apathy.

But something was afoot. Deep within the bowels of 42 Broadway, across some shiny overpriced conference table, the Wizards of Was realized that their destiny lay in murdering the mandate bearer: blogs. Ironically, if they would actually read the blogs instead of dismissing them as the tools of satan, they would have been able to ressurect themselves and actively contribute to the betterment and solidificaiton of American Orthodoxy. Instead, they took the short way out.

"Let's bash blogs," the Daas Torahniks declared. "We must create a new enemy, now that the Nazis are gone, Jewish busdrivers can wear yarmulkas to work without fear, we've given up on "at-risk" kids (poorly trained mentors are the answer....right?), and we've selected our gueat of honor for this year's dinner..." The obvious answer was blogs.

The dispensers of Daas Torah, concerned with the impact blogs were having on their destructive hegemony and possible ramificaitons that would have on future fundraising seconded the motion. "Blogs are bad," they bellowed. "We must rid our homes and neighborhoods of blogs." Then they returned to worrying about why the frummest girls schools produce graduates who ignore tznius, despite 14 years of subversive inculcation, and how to close the pandoras box of frummer-than-though kashrus which has inexplicably led to America's most religious neighborhood to eat traif meat for half a decade.

Blogs are bad. Blogs are bad. Yeah, let's stick it to that UnOrthodox fellow. Who is he anyway to blame us for child molestation? We TOLD people that seperate seating weddings would solve everything. And as long as they don't listen in the Five Towns, we can't be held responsible for what happens to little boys in Brooklyn."

So the convention program, with a half dozen cutsie teaser ads were drafted and everyone was happy. "Blogs are bad!," said the Agudah bigshots. "When we're done with them, we'll be able to ridicule molestation victims with impunity in the Jewish Week." The Daas Torah dispensers cried, "Blogs are Bad. And now, we can get back to banning intangible objects, like books and sheitels, which we can burn, and actual people whom we can besmirch, excommunicate and threaten. It was so much easier ointhe old days."

But they didn't count on themselves making the same mistake as they have made time and time again: life moves fast. People forget. They are busy. If things go away, they are forgotten. It's the same reason why sexual molestation victims fade away. If people forget, their pain is buried, for they themselves to choke on, alone. But when old news gets dredged up. When books that appear objectionable are given attention, or banned, they take on a life of their own. When forgotten blogs are given mainstage forums at major fundraising events....they return to life.

And so, UOJ, in all his glory has been vindicated and ressurected, unlike the Audah, which is as pathetic and irrelevant as it has been for the past decade, UOJ has attracted a well-written, logical counterpart: http://rabbimatisyahusalomon.blogspot.com ,which features a several thousand word letter detailing the vast and grievous gaps in communal leadership and compassion by our so-called gedolim.

The progeny of UOJ also provides an lucid timeline of events that led up to UOJ and more importantly the serious lack of judgement, compasison, and leadership of the dispensers of Daas Torah. And, incidentally, offers a nod to the one straight shooter of our generation, Rabbi Avigdor Miller, who told certain askanim, to, so to speak -- damn the topedos and blow this mother sky high. (i paraphrased a bit).

So, to the chagrin of every frummie on the dark hatted side of the color spectrum, UOJ is back. Ironically, the very intention of the Agudah, to declare thei moral victory over bloggers and reclaim their relevance has instead tossed the moral imperative to bloggers such as UOJ. Blogs are more relevant and necessary than ever before.

As for UOJ, he sounds more mature, and as always -- is dead on correct about the travesty that has been perpetrated over 40 years of inaction, intimidation, and malicious ineptitude.

Welcome back UOJ. Klal Yisroel needs you!

KOSHER foods made in South Australia and sold nationally and overseas have been given the all-clear by rabbinic authorities, despite a major breakdown in Adelaide’s kashrut supervision over the past eight years. At least three kosher-approved South Australian products listed in the Kosher Australia Food Bulletin 2007 (5767-8) have been made without rabbinic oversight for extended periods {Star-K style? YS}. The manufacturers of Beerenberg jams, B-D Farm yoghurts, and breads baked at Baker’s Delight in Frewville, SA, say that Adelaide’s kosher supervisor (mashgiach), Rabbi Yossi Engel, had not visited for between three and eight years. Kosher Australia (KA) has been aware of the problem since at least April, when Adelaide Hebrew Congregation (AHC) and kosher consumers discovered the lapses after contacting producers. The revelations come on top of the year long row between Rabbi Engel and AHC, and a police probe into allegations of government fraud at an Adelaide school which allegedly gave phantom Hebrew lessons. Senior rabbis in Melbourne and secular community leaders have been trying to head off the crisis for at least three months, the AJN understands.Together with KA and the Sydney Beth Din, which has religious jurisdiction over Adelaide’s Jewish community, they were warned in a confidential memo in late April that it had “the ability to destroy the Australian Jewish community and its reputation”. The scandal has already drawn in religious authorities overseas, with the London Beth Din set to arbitrate the dispute – despite South Australian courts backing the synagogue’s bid to sever ties with Rabbi Engel under civil law, rather than Jewish halacha.

Rabbonim and Educators Working to Raise Awareness Regarding Youth Concerts Prohibited by Gedolei Yisroel

    by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Rabbonim and educators gathered for an emergency meeting in Jerusalem last weekend to raise the chareidi public's awareness of the prohibition against attending concerts, even if arrangements for separate seating are made.

Participants at the meeting said despite efforts to inform the public regarding the prohibition against attending such events, organizers continue to distribute notices in chareidi neighborhoods. The rabbonim are asking parents to ensure that their children do not attend these events, which pose a tremendous spiritual danger and are very detrimental to their chinuch.

Shlomei Yisroel are hoping the organizers will to come their senses and cancel the events at the last moment.

    BS"D, Av 5767

We were appalled and trembling to hear of the terrible breach in our camp in the form of arvei shirah and concerts featuring singers and chazanim who sing before men and women in mixed company Rachmono litzlan and even with separate seating.

Previously gedolei Yisroel totally banned these events, even where there is separate seating. As such we hereby state our opinion, which is based on daas Torah.

    A. Attending these performances is totally prohibited

    B. The prohibition applies to both the organizers and the audience young and old, men and women and all the more so on the singers and chazanim, who are inducing the masses to sin.

    C. Newspapers and advertising circulars should not help by advertising these performances.

    D. The singers and chazanim who appear before a mixed audience may not be invited to sing at any event, nor can any event at which they participate be advertised, including tefillos and kosher events, in order to avoid lending a hand to transgressors

May Hashem Yisborach, in His great mercy and kindness, bring them to do teshuvoh before Him, and may we merit the eternal Redemption oz yimolei sechok peenu.

An investigation by “Globes” has discovered that Heftsiba Building Development & Investments Ltd. has NIS 800 million in debts, including NIS 460 million owed to suppliers. Hundreds of families have invaded apartments that the company built in Modi’in Ilit, a new haredi (ultra-orthodox) town, worried about Heftsiba’s liquidity. Information obtained by “Globes” indicates that hundreds of families last night invaded the apartments that they had bought. In addition, hundreds of company employees, who have not been paid for months, were notified that the company is bankrupt. At 6 am today, security guards, apparently hired by Heftsiba’s receiver, arrived at the building site to ensure that no construction material would be stolen. The Modi’in Ilit project, which is also known as Matityahu East (Kiryat Sefer), comprises 450 mostly three-room apartments in buildings of 5-6 floors each. The Modi’in Ilit Local Authority is located in the West Bank, just east of the Green Line, near the city of Modi’in, which is inside Israel. The apartments have stood empty for 18 months, and may not legally be occupied following a High Court of Justice ruling in early 2006. The basic problem in is that the apartments were built on private land owned by Palestinians who live in the nearby village of Balin. Peace Now says that the land was not purchased legally, which means that the apartments were also built illegally. This also means that the building permit, if one was granted at all, is problematic, to put it mildly. Peace Now says the Kiryat Sefer is only the first project of a plan to build 3,000 apartments on a 900-dunam (225-acre) site in the eastern part of Modi’in Ilit, even though the Urban Building Plan (UBP) allows for the construction of only 1,500 apartments. The Kiryat Sefer project was initiated by the Binyan Shalem NGO, which is affiliated with the Degel Hatorah party. Heftsiba Building was the chief contractor for the project, and began construction in 2003. The apartment buyers, mostly poor and lower middle class haredi families paid $100,000 each for the apartments, into which they have not been able to move. The builders also tells the purchasers which attorney they may use (who will go along with the builders "shtik". The builders also make them agree to all different types of waivers etc., besides all the oral promises are that not kept etc. The very poor construction & lack of communal amenities are all part of the "taking advantage of the gullible", nobody around to make stop to this. Everyone is entitled to a "fair" margin of profit, but they are not entitled to "rip-off" the clients.

  109. The Maayanei Hayeshua Medical Center in Bnei Brak is a privately funded hospital whose slogan is, "Holding healthcare to a higher standard. After a rocky start several years ago, MHMC more recently received good publicity(*) under its new management. But MHMC has now been found by Israel's Ministry of Health to be dangerously deficient in staffing, unsanitary and poorly run. Ha'aretz reports:

…The review found that the anesthetists on call for the operating room have "at best" completed the first stage of their specialization and "sometimes have not even taken those exams." The duty resident, a senior anesthetist, "is usually not called." The review states that "anesthesia administered by an anesthetist who is not an expert, especially if he has not taken the first-stage exams, without an expert anesthetist being present, endangers the patient. This is particularly the case during Caesarian sections, where general anesthesia is among the most dangerous sort. Therefore the presence of at least one expert anesthetist is paramount."

An anesthetist, who is not the doctor in the operating room, must also be present in the recovery unit, and "an experienced doctor" must be the one to release patients to the wards, the report states.

The report also warned that the hospital does not have an active blood bank, making it potentially difficult to meet emergency needs at peek times.

The number of nurses on staff "has decreased to a minimum," the review found: there is a shortage of nurses in the hospitalization wards, especially in delivery and operating rooms. Furthermore, nurses do not undergo refresher courses on CPR, and "an atmosphere of frustration" is rife among them.

The review also discovered that staff needs for operating rooms "do not meet safety requirements." Beginning at 3 P.M., there is no nurse in the recovery room attached to the operating rooms, despite the many surgeries performed in the afternoon and night. Instead, nurses are brought in as needed, some of them "practical nurses," "not one of which has the appropriate skills."

In addition, the review cited a long list of safety violations involving "rusty equipment" and a "low level of cleanliness" in the pediatrics ward, including a kitchenette used to prepare baby food, and carts containing dirty laundry situated near the kitchen.

(*) This "good publicity" was found primarily in the European/Israeli Yated Ne'eman.

You'll note that the hospital directors openly lie – the government's findings predate the Yated article, and were only made public after Ha'aretz uncovered the information. (Israel protects hospitals by keeping this type of information hidden.)

In the Ha'aretz piece, the hospital administration admits the deficiencies and claims they have now been corrected. A senior Health Ministry source tells Ha'aretz that is only partially true, and serious deficiencies remain.

In another article Yated Ne'eman notes the important role leading rabbis have in the day-to-day operations of the hospital:

…HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein expressed his pleasure at the continued development of the medical center, where leading poskim are consulted along every step of the way. "Maran Hashevet Levi and Maran Rebbe Nissim Karelitz set aside significant amounts of time to answer questions, guide, assist and advise this important place in every way possible," he said. "Every time a question is brought to their doorstep they address it without delay and provide the directors with clear answers all the time, demonstrating that the place is dear and important in their eyes.…

Apparently not "dear" enough to keep it clean, sanitary and legally staffed.

  120. Newsday reports:

The former chief executive of what was once one of Long Island's largest companies was sentenced yesterday to 15 years in prison for heading a decade-long fraud that kept the company afloat, but ended up costing creditors and stockholders $177million.

Herman Jacobowitz, the head of Brentwood-based Allou Healthcare, a distributor of health and beauty products and drugs, was ordered by U.S. District Judge John Gleeson in Brooklyn to make restitution of that money and to forfeit another $130million.

Jacobowitz's brother Aaron, who headed a number of unrelated companies that were used to launder money in the scheme, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Gleeson, who ordered him to share in paying the hundreds of millions of dollars in forfeitures and restitution.

It is unlikely that creditors and stockholders will get much money back, because both brothers claim to be destitute.

A third brother, Jacob, the company's former executive vice president, is scheduled to be sentenced later in the week. Their father, Victor, also was arrested in connection with the investigation but has been considered too ill to face court appearances.

The Jacobowitz family is prominent in the Williamsburg Hasidic community, and the courtroom was packed with supporters.

Before he was sentenced, Herman Jacobowitz pleaded for mercy, wept, stamped his feet and cried out, "I'm sorry. ... It's on my mind day and night."

Their attorneys argued Herman and Aaron Jacobowitz should receive a reduced sentence because of their charitable work.

But Gleeson said he had little sympathy for their claim, calling it "utterly meritless," because the money they gave in charity had been gained through fraud.

While imposing the maximum sentences of 15 and 10 years that were agreed to under the plea-bargain, Gleeson said the two brothers were fortunate because if they had been convicted at trial he would have imposed a much more severe sentence because of the gravity of their offenses.

The Allou operation amounted to "12 years of fraud engaged in on a large scale on a daily basis," Gleeson said.

Richard Haddad, an attorney for the consortium of banks the Jacobowitzes defrauded, also had little sympathy for the plea for mercy based on charitable contributions. "Anyone can give away other people's money," Haddad said.…

A DEFIANT Rabbi Yossi Engel has told his small Adelaide support base he wants to stay in the City of Churches and teach Jewish education.

In an extraordinary public meeting in his home last Sunday night, called to explain “what is really going in Adelaide”, Rabbi Engel told about 25 people that he wanted them to join him on a quest for “Jewish scholarship, Jewish learning, and Jewish awareness”, according to a source at the meeting.

Rabbi Engel faced questions from parents and students, who allege he doctored report cards on behalf of a school they didn’t know existed.

His lawyer, Ron Bellman, said there was “more” to the Spirit of David Adelaide Hebrew School than had been revealed, according to the source, who secretly taped the meeting.

Rabbi Engel also said he had always intended to create a Jewish learning centre in Adelaide.

Bellman is listed as public officer for the Spirit of David Adelaide Judaic Learning Centre, established on March 20, 2007.

Concerns over the financial and administrative management of the Spirit of David Adelaide Hebrew School was stated as one of three reasons for the Adelaide Hebrew Congregation’s (AHC’s) bid to terminate Rabbi Engel’s contract in December last year.

It had earlier given Rabbi Engel notice that it didn’t intend on renewing his expiring contract.

With Bellman’s help, the Rabbi has tried -– unsuccessfully -– to have South Australian courts support his bid to have the contract dispute resolved by the Sydney Beth Din in a religious court.

Meanwhile, the AJN understands the AHC is set to announce the arrival of a new rabbi from Israel next week.

German-born Yehoshua Samet, 26, will visit kosher food producers to resolve question marks over their kashrut certification status as his first duty of business after arriving in Adelaide.

Why in a certain store in Lakewood the Mexican that makes egg sandwiches is checking the eggs for blood spots and he is still in business?

Why is a certain major fish company who was caught doing productions without proper Kashering still considered the best and is still producing under a different Hasgacha now?

Why are we paying so much more for Chalav Yisroel, Glatt Kosher Meat, Kosher Fish, Bug Free Vegetables, etc. - Yet in many times the Mashgiach and/or Kashrus agency is not doing an appropiate job?

The only answer which I have heard that can make a difference was championed years ago by Rabbi Eli Teitelbaum. An independent non-profit organization that does not get paid by the company should inspect without advance notice the productions, packaging, and food preparation of suppliers of Kosher food. This would be accomplished by imposing a tax of $100 yearly per family. The findings should be publicized weekly in all Jewish newspapers and via a website.

If anyone has other suggestions - how about being Nacshon ben Aminodov for the Kashrus consumer?

Rabbi, what about the abused children of Klal Yisroel? What about the battered women of Klal Yisroel? What about the innocent victims being mistreated by loan sharks? All these problems are D'Oiraisah, and you are concerened about Minhagim?

We are supposed to be a light unto the nations. The nations of the world see that Jews act no different than the Cosa Nostra. Why are you turning your cheek from real problems and worrying about defending Minhagim?

An investigative reporter that did abuse stories wanted to do a story on Ohel Family Services and how they run the domestic violence center but she couldn't get any of the woman that were sucked in to be counseled to go on record so she put the story on hold. A state and federal investigation into Ohel's counseling services would be appropiate when enough people will come forward. A list of the therapists, social workers and the clients that they suck in is being compiled. Anyone with more information should post it.

I know of a person that was so victimized by Ohel that it would be hard to figure out which sin was worse child molestation or what happened to this person. This person is still suffering to this day.I hope more people too will come forward and expose Ohel who does a nice job hiding behide it's supposed inception. It was supposed to help. Unfortunately it is and has been set up instead to make very rich people from this organization. I hope someday we could meet.

  128. Extradition! (from the Broadway sensation Fondler on the Roof)

    Extradition, extradition! Extradition!
    Extradition, extradition! Extradition!

Who, day and night, must sodomize talmidim,
tell them it's okay, behind shadowy closed doors?
And who has the right, as scoffers of the law,
to seek asylum in the Holy Land?

    The Rebbeim, the Rebbeim! Extradition!
    The Rebbeim, the Rebbeim! Extradition!

Who must know the way to run a yeshiva,
A quiet yeshiva, a kosher yeshiva?
Who must squirrel away all the sexual abuse,
    To perpetuate the torah way?

    The hanhala, the hanhala! Extradition!
    The hanhala, the hanhala! Extradition!

At three, I learned the alef bais.
At four, my balls were fondled.
I hear they found the bastard.
I hope he rots in hell.

    The talmidim, the talmidim! Extradition!
    The talmidim, the talmidim! Extradition!

And who is it that makes sure
    that whatever comes to pass,
    molesters of children
will get it up their ass?

    The zroya netuyah! Extradition!
Of the law! The law! Extradition!
