Dear UOJ,
Thank you for being a voice of reason and providing a forum for the many victims of our leadership. A scandalous sex abuse story is brewing here in Ramat Bet Shemesh.
A rebbe in a school has been accused of molestation of at least one (and possibly more) children. The rabbonim (former Americans) are trying to keep "hush hush" and contain the story. Although the rebbe was removed from the class the rabbonim demanded his return. Only a threat of going to the press and police kept him from coming back into the school and teaching.
The rabbonim suggested that the family pursue justice through an investigation done by a form of "tznius police' in Yerushalyim. The investigation has shlepped out for 2 weeks due to lack of cooperation on the part of the rebbe.
It is now coming out that there were more victims AND that the rabbonim in concert with the school, sent all of the witness kids and potential victims for "deprogramming".
UOJ....what do we do?
*******************************
UOJ -
I salute you for your campaigns to bring molesters to justice. I will be happy if this guy will never be able to come close to a kid again. At the same time I must ask for a matnas chinam......................a broken hearted father.
The father of a victim asked me to remove the names of the rabbis that covered up for the child-rapist, and to edit out some of this post. I will respect his wishes. He said - they were true, but at this crucial time, he felt his family would be better off if those details and names were to be deleted.
UOJ
Why am I always reading all these accusations yet almost never see any names mentioned?
ReplyDelete....Because - unless I am able to verify the story with three (atleast) independent reliable people - I won't put up the names in the headline section.
ReplyDeleteI live in RBS and know of this (and sadly other such) stories.
ReplyDeleteI am a parent in that school.
Much of your blog post is 100% true.Other facts I don't know for sure.
Parents were asked to allow him back into class.
The Rabbonim did "push" a certain therapist on the kids.
Many parents have been contacted to bad mouth this family (which by the way is a very repsected family in the community).
Yes, the siblings were blamed for either doing the act or influencing the child to say these things.
I know these boys well. They are wonderful kids and yes, one was in America for the last several months.
Another case of protecting the (possibly) guilty and beating on the innocent.
From what I have heard the teacher was suspended by the principal immediately upon hearing the accusations from the mother. However, after some type of private investigator was unable to turn up any evidence the principal asked all of the parents if they would be opposed to returning the teacher to the classroom. One mother had asked her child if he knew anything and he starting crying hysterically and related some of the things he saw.
ReplyDeleteThis mother informed the principal that she was considering going to the police. The investigation of this private investigator continued and supposedly the teacher was supposed to undergo a polygraph test this past Friday. The incident was with a 1st grade boy.
Apparently, some of the initial hesitation of going to the police was that nobody had heard anything from the victim other than the mother and the entire basis of the accusation was on her word alone together with the fact that the Israeli police are not trusted to be fair. So, they were delaying reporting to the police until they felt that they had a more solid case. During that time the teacher was in suspension. The investigator however doesn't seem to be doing a great job if he failed to interview the victim or any of his classmates!!!
Do you have any knowledge how Israeli police generally handle these types of cases?
UOJ, please keep up on this story it is crucial. When you have RELIABLE information and names please report them when you feel that it is appropriate.
Thanks.

ReplyDeleteUOJ....what do we do?
ReplyDeleteCALL THE POLICE!!!!
When the scandel came out a few years ago about torah temimmah a chasiidishe friend told me that the problem in the chassidshe yeshivos here and ALL the yeshivas in Israel are a thousand times worse then the litvisher yeshivas in the u.s.
ReplyDeleteAnd now we see that it's true.
Reb Nuchem on his hotline this week said that a menahael from a major chassidishe yeshiva told him that he doesn't know what to do next year. He admitted to reb nochum that "MOST OF HIS MELAMDIM ARE MOLESTERS !!!"
Here are a few interesting comments from Voz Iz Nais -
"Dov sits in the NY State Assembly where they have been sitting on a bill that was already passed in the Senate. This bill would give protection to our children from these molesters, by requiring every yeshiva to do background checks and fingerprinting and make them mandatory reporters. Why hasn't this bill been voted upon yet? It'e been over a year now, Dov? Talk is cheap. We need action."
Dov is a good man, but he doesn't run the State Assembly. That would be none other than Sheldon Silver, who is regarded by many in the frum community as some sort of a tzaddik -- but who has big connections with many of the yeshiva leaders and doesn't want to see them embarrassed. If you want that bill to be voted on, write, telephone, e-mail and send telegrams to Shelly Silver and tell him to STOP HOLDING THIS BILL HOSTAGE. One word from him and it is done.

BROTHERS...IT IS IMPERIATIVE THAT EVREY JEW CALL THEIR ELECTED OFFICAL AND DEMAND THAT EVREY RABBI,TEACHER,OFFICE WORKERS IN A YESHIVA GET FINGERPRINTED,AGUDAS ISREAL OPPOSITION TO THIS LAW IS A HEINOIUS ACT.FORGET ABOUT ABOUT SHERER HE IS GONE AND IRRELEVANT.CALL DOV HIKIND 853 9616 AND ALL STATE OFFICALS AND DEMAND THIS LAW BE ENACTED MARK MAYER APPEL -AM ECHAD MAY GOD PROTECT OUR SWEETEST KIDS
A police detective told a friend of mine that "JEWISH PARENTS ARE WORSE THAN CATHOLICS BECAUSE THEY PROTECT THEIR RABBIS INSTEAD OF THEIR KIDS." This was also the subject of a 3 part series in Newsday back in 2003 when it became clear that the Jewish community leadership had put tremendous pressure on D.A. Charles Hynes NOT to extradite a serial molester who had run to Israel. The cops said "everyone knows there are two rules of laws in Brooklyn. One for the Jews and the other for everyone else." Its one thing if we use our political clout for good, but when it is to protect the people who molest OUR children, I simply cannot imagine a bigger chillul hashem.
The list of rabbis who enable this or keep their heads in the sand is much too long to list. It would be much, much easier to list the rabbis who are doing something about it. Here it is:
That's it. NOBODY! Good luck Dov, but unless you are prepared not only to expose the molesters, but the heads of the institutions that enable them, you won't get too far. Also, you must expose those rabbis (who are not really hiding for anyone who opens their eyes) who are fighting together with the Catholic Church to stop legislation that would protect our children. Another wonderful show of concern for our own children.
The sickest part is their argument: Separation of Church and State requires that based on the First Ammendment and our right to practice our religion, we cannot be told by the government to provide safety in our schools or to have our rabbis be mandated to report to authorities suspicions of child abuse. It really sounds like the perverse hashkafa that molesting and abusing children is part of our religious practice like mila and kashrus that the government cannot touch. Another beautiful kiddush hashem.
But we don't need to worry about the future of klal yisroel because the rabbanim have stopped Lipa Shmeltzer concerts and also have told the women in Lakewood to buy thicker stockings, B"H. Our children are safer and we can all sleep soundly knowing that Moshiach is now surely on his way. So don't worry dear kinder, if someone is molesting you, at least you won't have to see women with thin stockings and you won't have to be exposed to bad music. As one rabbi told a friend of mine who was molested: if you develop psychiatric symptoms it is not caused by trauma, it is hereditary. And another rabbi told a boy who informed him that an adult had forced him to put his genitals in the man's mouth, "You'll get over it." And as a rosh yeshivah told my friend who was molested by the mashgiach in his yeshivah "it wasn't so bad". As for the other boy who was molested worse "We know about him, but he isn't coming forward to complain so we don't have to worry about him." Then there was the rosh yeshivah who told the therapist of a known molester that he doesn't need therapy because he would give him "torah therapy". These are all maysim shehayu.

i haven't read all the comments, but as I see it, (from 1st hand experience, I might add) NOTHING will come of this UNLESS you DO call 911. Yeshivos WILL NOT sell out 1 of their own. They WOULD RATHER 'bashmutz' the child & his family in order to PROTECT "THEIR" good name. My experience was in YESHIVA OHR SHRAGA D'Veretzky & neither the "holy" rosh yeshiva nor his 'hailiga' son gave 2 hoots. They MISrepresented the ENTIRE issue @ hand, lied thru their teeth, JUST so they should come out of this SQUEEKY CLEAN. But let me tell YOU ALL, THERE IS A "HALIGA B'SHEFER" who SEES ALL & KNOWS ALL & EVERYONES day of reckoning comes sooner or later. Where is YIRAS SHOMAYIM???? Mechanchim, Roshei Yeshivos, etc.etc.
WAKE UP -- YOM HADIN is only a stones throw away.
I just went on that offenders registry website & found 2 Yidden living round the corner from me!! I'm sick to my stomach. I'm glad something is being done by Dov..it's not too late to save other victims.
Uoj! you don't have to post names unless you verify the story but the parent who wrote this peice can name names, especially of the rabbonim who are stonewalling the situation so as others who do have connections in israel can get more details.
ReplyDeleteAll the best rebbi,

I hope they will also allow the naming of these predators before they turn into mass offenders like Dr. Mondrowitz who was allowed to pursue his "hobby" for decades and is now being protected by the menuval rav of ger chassidim in yerushalayim, Mayer Zilbershteyn SR"Y.

I live in RBSA.
ReplyDeleteI have a child in that class.
I was contacted to allow the rebbe back.
The Rabbonim in RBS A involved with this:
Rabbi Mordechai Kornfeld
Rabbi Chaim Malinowitz
They also happen to be the rabbonim of a school that our son's school merged with recently.
On one hand we are sick about this story. On the other hand we are afraid that we will be ostracized like the victim's family has been.
It nauseates me how they have been treated.
UOJ,
ReplyDeleteIt's Elimelech Kornfeld...Mordechai is his brother (and is innocent in this case)!
Please excuse the mistake and correct it
Kornfeld...the son of Rabbi Aharon Feldman of Ner Israel?
ReplyDeleteThat's a surprise (lol)!
But I am shocked to learn about Rav Malinowitz. I know him from Monsey. I always thought him to be more human than the rest.
Has this been confirmed?
I am aware of the situation. It is a perfect illustration of the inability of the Haredi community to deal with cases of abuse. There are religious professionals in Israel who can help with the police and social services. The level of incompetence was shown by the "investigator" having the rebbe see a graphologist. At this point those who care in the community can make a difference. All the children in the class need to talk with a psychologist trained in dealing with child abuse.
ReplyDeleteYosef Blau
I am another parent with a kid in this class. I have not posted previously. I can confirm 90% of what was said. The accusations are not all coming from one place either. There are multiple children. I want to add a couple of things:
ReplyDelete1. there are at least some supportive Rabbis out there.
2. The school never told us of the accusation or anything. the teacher was out of the class a week before we heard about all this through the grapevine. The 2 rabbis mentioned above and the school kept it quiet even from us.

ReplyDeleteHave you considered that this may be a good time to cut back on the excess?
Let's remember we are in the 9 days. I am not trying to justify anyone's actions. I dont' know anything about this incident, but I do know both of these Rabbanim personally. They are very responsible and caring, and wouldnt' do something stupid just to cover up someone's name.
ReplyDeleteLet's get all the facts and even approach these rabbanim if we really need to know more before we call them "evil" ch"v.
It's a very difficult situation but we have to make sure we don't rush to judgment just because we read things on a blog.
I thing the ra-bonim should contract with the great rabbi doctor mondrowitz to sort out the sordid details of this case in ramot beit shemesh. It is mamesh min hashomayim that mondrowitz is still in israel to lend his vast expertise in this matter. The forsight of the gerer rov to post bail and responsibility to supervise mondrowitz is nothing more than a givaldige ness performed by his mechutan the gerer rebbe himself.
ReplyDeletei dont care if it is the 9 days or the 349 and a half days! If molesters are in the mosdos, then we will raise hell any days of the year! Right UOJ?

ReplyDeleteBorough Park, NY - Assemblyman Dov Hikind is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of attempted rapist & sexual three-hour assault of a 14-year-old chassidic girl sunday night in Borough Park
the attacker is described as a White male, 20-25 years old, approximately 5’9”, black hair,
“We are going to protect our children and our streets,” said Assemblyman Hikind (D-Brooklyn) alerting residents to a vicious three-hour assault on a Borough Park resident.
At 8:45 p.m. Sunday night, an unknown attacker forced a fourteen-year-old girl into a four-door black sedan, drove the victim to a secluded location and sodomized her, and then attempted to rape her. The teen fought with her attacker; he then drove on and left her at Fort Hamilton Parkway and 36th Street after midnight.
“At 8:45 p.m. the streets of Borough Park are still well populated; someone must have seen something. We are urging witnesses to come forward with any information. Parents and teens must be more alert and vigilant to their surroundings, until this attacker is caught,” Hikind added.
Offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the assailant, Hikind said, “The perpetrator will be caught and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
Anyone with information regarding the suspect should contact the New York Police Department Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
Associated Press Report: The Iowa Labor Commissioner’s Office announced today that it has uncovered dozens of child labor violations at the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Postville.
ReplyDeleteLabor officials say their investigation, which spanned several months, had uncovered 57 cases of child labor law violations.
The types of violations included minors working in prohibited occupations, exceeding allowable hours to work youth and working with prohibited tools
Iowa Labor Commissioner Dave Neil says the investigation brings to light egregious violations of virtually every aspect of the state’s child labor laws.
The attorney general’s office says it could not comment on what penalties are possible. State officials declined to release details on how many children may be involved or their ages.
TUCSON, Arizona (AP) — A priest has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing three Tucson teenagers.
ReplyDeleteGary Edward Underwood apologized to his victims and asked for their forgiveness before he was sentenced Monday. The 53-year-old was also ordered to lifetime probation as a registered sex offender.
Underwood had pleaded guilty in May to six counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
The victims had testified that Underwood manipulated them, got them drunk, showed them pornography and molested them.
He had been indicted in 2006 and suspended from the priesthood. The Roman Catholic diocese of Tucson has said that Underwood will never again serve as a priest.
Hi UOJ,
ReplyDeleteIt used to be so hard to get into your blog, but I am glad I can get in easily now.
I wish we could get a kabbalist, or a rabbi who've studied kabbalah who can really explain to the general public the deep spiritual effects of molestation.

For children struggling in school, Dr. Melvin D. Levine has been a great advocate. For decades, Dr. Levine, a pediatrician, has championed the idea that poorly performing students are not lazy or dumb, but instead need to be educated in a different way.
Several men, including this one, have accused the prominent pediatrician Dr. Levine of abusing them sexually during physical exams several years ago. The doctor has denied doing anything wrong. Or, as he has summed up his philosophy: “Every child has strengths. No exception.”
Dr. Levine’s advocacy made him famous. PBS broadcast a multipart series, “Misunderstood Minds,” based on his work. He appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and his book “A Mind at a Time” became a New York Times best seller. All Kinds of Minds, the nonprofit he founded with Charles Schwab, has trained 42,000 teachers in his methods, and contracts with dozens of schools each year to carry out his ideas.
The acclaim benefited both Children’s Hospital Boston, the teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where he practiced until 1985, and the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he served as director until retiring in 2006.
So it came as a shock in March when Carmen L. Durso, a lawyer in Massachusetts who had sued the Archdiocese of Boston for sexual abuse by priests, held a news conference accusing Dr. Levine, 68, of sexually abusing five former patients when they were boys. The accusations relate to events from 1967 to 1985, but the first of the four lawsuits on behalf of these men was filed only three years ago. There are no criminal charges against him.
Dr. Levine vehemently denies both the accusations and ever sexually touching a patient. And many defenders argue that Dr. Levine could not have worked at the pinnacle of his profession for so long if the accusations were true.
There have been, however, other complaints dating back 20 years. In 1985, a few months after he left Boston, court records show that a letter of complaint was sent to the president of Children’s Hospital. That complaint turned into a civil lawsuit filed in 1988 in Federal District Court in Massachusetts. There was also a formal complaint to the Massachusetts medical board in 1993. And Dr. William Coleman, a longtime medical colleague, said Dr. Levine told him in 2002 that another former patient was claiming sexual abuse.
None of the cases were proved in court. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1991 for lack of evidence. The Massachusetts medical board did not find enough evidence to act on the 1993 complaint. The patient who made the complaint to Dr. Levine in 2002 is now a plaintiff represented by Mr. Durso.
But these decisions are not as clear-cut as they may seem. There is little evidence that Children’s Hospital, the University of North Carolina or the medical board ever tried to thoroughly investigate the accusations. For instance, in at least two cases, parents and children were never even interviewed. And the institutions did not notify one another about the individual complaints.
The pattern itself may also be troubling. Dr. Douglas S. Diekema, chairman of the committee on bioethics at the American Academy of Pediatricians, said it was difficult to know how many complaints an average pediatrician would receive during a career because, unless they are proved, such complaints are usually hidden from the public. But, he added, “in my experience, three or more is above average.”
Because of the litigation, Dr. Levine’s lawyers advised him not to be interviewed for this article. He sent a 14-page autobiography that described his career, his hobbies and his wife of 40 years, Bambi. They have no children.
A Rhodes scholar, he attended Harvard Medical School and later joined the faculty. By the 1970s, he was focused on treating children with learning disabilities, winning millions of dollars in grants. His stature among his peers is hard to exaggerate.
Dr. Paul H. Dworkin, chairman of pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, held a fellowship at Harvard under Dr. Levine in the 1970s. He credits Dr. Levine with changing the entire way doctors approach children failing at school.
Dr. Dworkin, who said he only recently heard about the accusations, said it was difficult to imagine Dr. Levine hurting a child because he had such obvious empathy. “He had a remarkably good rapport with children,” he said.
One Boy’s Story
The five men who have filed lawsuits against Dr. Levine say they do not know one another, but their charges are similar: During physical examinations, which parents were discouraged from attending, the boys, ages 5 to 13, were asked to strip naked and stay that way for the entire exam. They were then allegedly touched inappropriately. Because of the nature of the accusations, these men have chosen not to disclose their identities to the public. Their names, however, are known to defendants. One plaintiff is in prison, Mr. Durso said, because of a “serious charge” relating to carrying a firearm.........
FOR THE COMPLETE STORY - N.Y. TIMES.COM
Whereas there is credit being taken by various people for "outing" this situation, there are those of us who have known about it for a few weeks already but have had the prudence to keep our mouths shut so that things can get taken care of properly. Unfortunately things have not gone quite as well as the Rabbonim have liked, and that's because there are many people involved who are not listening to the Rabbonim.
ReplyDeleteThe Rabbonim are absolutely not interested in a coverup. What they want is to find out the real facts in the story so that it can be determined what really happened and the proper steps will be taken thereafter. The professional whom the Rabbonim wanted the purported victims to be taken to is someone with years of experience in this field and who is not shy about telling it like it is. They have never pushed for the rebbi to be put back in the classroom, they have simply taken the proper halachic approach of not judging a man before the evidence is in. We certainly have to be concerned that there may be truth to these allegations. If they are true, all the Rabbonim whom I've spoken to have made it clear that the rebbe must be dealt with accordingly. That means therapy, that means never again being in a classroom, and if necessary, that means jailtime. All of the Rabbonim support that - if it is appropriate. To pre-judge the man is inappropriate and against Halacha. The proper investigation must be done.
It seems that there is an abundance of misinformation swirling around this case, within Ramat Beit Shemesh, around the world, and particularly on this blog. Aside from being lashon hara, it is malicious in that it airs the pain, suffering, and troubles of the families involved, the school and Rabbonim involved, and that of a community. The value in these conversations seems to be very questionable.
I commend anyone who properly and with due dilligence weeds out those that are dangerous to our youth and our community. I know firsthand how wuch work is spent on rehabilitating the victims of such crimes, and I'm fully aware of their pain and suffering. But ranting about a situation in which all the facts are not in and perpetuating lies in the process is irresponsible to say the least.
I sincerely hope that this will soon be properly sorted out and that the healing process necessary for everyone involved will be able to begin.
19 YEARS LATER - ALMOST EVERY STORY OF SEX-ABUSE FOLLOWS THE SAME PATTERN!
ReplyDelete---------------------------------
One of those men, now 28, agreed to meet with The Times.
Because his father and sister are prominent educators who do not want to tangle publicly with Dr. Levine, he asked that his name not be published. He said he was not planning to sue.
The visits with Dr. Levine began when he was 9. His family had moved, and he began struggling in school; his parents worried that he might have a learning disability. Medical records sent to The Times by Ms. Kuniholm confirm that this man was a patient of Dr. Levine for several years, with regular visits and physical exams. In addition, The Times interviewed the father, who took him to many appointments and confirms that Dr. Levine routinely gave his son a physical exam alone in the room.
The young man said he remembered only the first two visits clearly. He recalled a series of tests related to reading and math, given by Dr. Levine’s associates. He said Dr. Levine met with his parents to discuss the results, then sent them to a waiting room while he conducted a physical examination.
“My mom remembers thinking it was unusual that I was there for educational issues and that he would take me into an exam room unattended,” he said. “But my mom didn’t want to protest because she trusted him.”
In the room, he was asked to strip. He said he remembered sitting nervously on the exam table and staring at his clothes on the floor. Dr. Levine, he said, told him he was “very special,” and rubbed the boy’s penis until it was erect. At the same time he asked if the boy had wet dreams. He said Dr. Levine was wearing gray pants and had an erection as he brushed against his side. Then the exam was over.
The man said he did not tell his parents at that time because he felt ashamed.
He came forward, he said, when he read about the lawsuits in a newspaper. It enraged him that Dr. Levine had prospered, and he wanted to corroborate the accusations.
“What I can’t understand now,” he said, “is why this was allowed to go on for so long.”
Unfortunately things have not gone quite as well as the Rabbonim have liked, and that's because there are many people involved who are not listening to the Rabbonim.

YOU ARE A FILTHY LIAR! THE RABBONIM INVOLVED ARE NO BETTER THAN THE GEDOIIILIM IN THE AGUDAH AND MARGULIES! IF THEY COULD COVER IT UP SUCCESSFULLY THEY WOULD! NO MORE COVERUPS - EVER AGAIN!
To clarify, no school official ever called us and this is true of at least some other parents we've talked to. We had to talk to them. One parent who decided to act as a spokesperson for the school with no official capacity did contact people after parents started talked to each other and everyone knew already. He didn't know much.
ReplyDeleteto the person who wrote the first comment and has a child in the class. I also have a child in that class. Plse be in touch with me directly on RBS.parent@gmail.com
I am commenting on the updated post.
The fact is that they were ready to bring the teacher back after an inconclusive investigation where the investigation was completely inadequate. This is a big tzarich iyun on the rabbis involved. I have no first hand knowledge of the situation. I have only spoken to parents of children in the class, and I personally think that they should call the police already.
As for the parents who just want him to get treatment, it should not be up to them. This is not just punishment it is keeping all of the other children safe. Unfortunately, treatment does not guarantee that.
Also, putting a molestor behind bars serves as a possible deterrent for future molestors. Letting him get away with counseling and treatment has the opposite effect.
"l'maan yishm'u v'yeerau" call the police already.
I have very good reason to believe that there was inappropriate touching in this case.
As for the rabbis, I don't know enough to judge, but ultimately their handling of the situation will be judged by the members of the community. The onus is on the community to choose responsible leaders and to hold them accountable for their decisions.

I think the rabbonim are presuming his innocence and looking for guilt, rather than the other way around, though I have not spoken to them.
It looks like they now need to make a decision how to proceed...

To the Parents of This Class,
I am certain that you have had the best intentions in defending this rebbe and what he has been accused of doing.
After all, he is a rebbe, he is a tzadik...how could he do such a thing?
As a mental health professional let me tell you that just as there is no discrimination regarding who can be abused there is also no discrimination in regards to who can abuse.
Everyone has a yezter hara. Anyone can succumb to such "netios".
About calling the police...if a suspected murderer was Charedi would there be a shailoh? If a Charedi neighbor was breaking into homes and stealing, etc..would you have a shiloh?
Then how could there be a shailoh when precious neshomos are at stake?
I'm not saying to make a witch hunt or lynch mob HOWEVER a serious investigation must be made.
What bothers me the most here, however, is the way in which the other parents have treated this family.
From my understanding they have done EVERYTHING with the guidance of Rabbonim and with the interest of privacy. It would have been much easier for them to just go to the police.
And you (the parents) BAD MOUTH them? I have heard them been called evil, their family members suspected, etc.
What is wrong with you people? Have you tried to imagine what this family is going through? The effect it is having on them?
Do you actually think that they woke up one morning and said "hey, let's accuse the rebbe of molestation...won't that be fun?"
It may be difficult for you to find the right words of comfort to express but to gang up and disgrace them to others puts you in a sordid category yourselves.
This family needs all of the support and understanding possible.
Reach out to them if only through this and other blogs where you can be supportive and remain anonymous.
The only "evil" people here are those who perpetrate acts against children and their defenders.

Dear Rafi,
Below is a copy of an old post from Lazer Brody about dealing with child molesters. Have you spoken to Rav K and M regarding the situation? Why isn't the Rebbe on "vacation' or "sick leave" until this is sorted out?
From LB's site:
This is not an easy subject; I didn't want to deal with this in public, but after having to advise a heartbroken Baal Tshuva in the USA what to do when a blue-blooded Cheder Rebbe molested his beloved child, we can no longer remain quiet.
Please excuse my delay in answering you; before I wrote this letter, I sought the guidance and advice of two leading Israeli rabbinical personalities whom I hold in high regard.
First of all, a child molester is the lowest form of villain. If he carries an appearance of being religious, such as a warped cheder rebbe, he's lower than low by causing chilul Hashem, a defamation of Hashem's name, for which there is no atonement. The minute he lays a hand on a child - or on any other human - he gets the judgment of "rodef", literally "chaser" or attempted murderer. Any person has the right to kill a "rodef" on the spot. By molesting a child, the villain is literally maming the child's tender soul for life.
Unfortunately, as you say Michael, many community leaders are not aggressive enough against this cancer. By not acting and protecting children from molesters, those leaders are "standing on their blood", a severe transgression of Torah. Here's what we do over here, with iron-fist rabbinical approval:
The minute a molester (or potential molestor) is identified, he gets a "house call" by 2 or 3 good ol' boys with long payis and very big biceps; they don't lay a finger on the villain, but put a good 10 pounds of fear in his heart and inform him that he must do the following: 1) Tshuva; 2) Resign immediately from the cheder, and to never teach children again; 3) No severence pay; 4) To stay put, so he doesn't move to another town and begin molesting children there. 5) Pay damages to the injured party; 6) Mandatory counseling and emotional rehab. The villain then falls under close scrutiny, and if he even looks at a child, somehow bad things begin happening to him. Such a system prevents Chilul Hashem and is usually adequate.
If however, the villain tries to hide behind his "meyuchas" relatives or weak rabbis, or fails to make tshuva, we turn him over to the police. Child molesters in Israel get 18 years in the slammer. I used to be the Rav of a prison - I can tell you that the other inmates hate child molestors, and make their lives unbearable. As such, the fear of a stint in an Israeli prison is also a deterrent. Yet, not long ago, one second offender that didn't heed a rav's warnings was sent up the river for the full 18; he went to jail with a cast on his right arm, too.
Although the thing I love most is "Kiddush Hashem", and the thing I hate most is "Chilul Hashem", protecting the life of a child comes before Chilul Hashem considerations. Hashem is willing to have His holy name erased to make peace between a husband and wife - all the moreso to guard the life a child.
Rebbe Nachman of Breslev teaches that not all rabbis - especially in these times before Moshiach - are not exactly worthwhile. If your local rabbi doesn't come down like a ton of bricks on a child molestor - or seek the aid of others that will - don't have faith in him.
Parents - look for the early warning signs! Don't ever let your child stay after school alone with a teacher, and beware of a teacher that seeks to be alone with a child. Teach your child about the sanctity of the body, and that no one is allowed to touch it.
Yes, Michael - this abomination is in the tradition of the Flood Generation. May Hashem wipe these villains from our midst.
May we merit to talk about happier subjects always, yours with blessings, Lazer Brody

Sadly each time such a case happens everyone goes into a panic - how to proceed, where the welfare of the children and the good name of the rebbe will be protected until the investigation has been completed.
I saw an article that there is an organization called Takana that is focusing on exactly this problem - in a religious framework. Perhaps they should be consulted for advice in this case??

Is the Rebbi a chutznik or an Israeli?
Is the investigator really from the mishmeres hatznius of yerushalayim?
Are they the people that beat people up and burn down stores?
UOJ posted the names of the 2 rabbis involved and one of their addresses and phone numbers, asking people to protest against the rabbi and to inform his employer.
He has now removed them along with a bunch of other details,
"The father of a victim asked me to remove the names of the rabbis that covered up for the child-rapist, and to edit out some of this post. I will respect his wishes. He said - they were true, but at this crucial time, he felt his family would be better off if those details and names were to be deleted."
Kol HaKavod to this father who protects not only his family but the rabbonim involved as well (although IMHO the rabbonim should be outed).
This family has amazing strength and courage.
Kudos as well to Unorthodox Jew for respecting his request and removing the names. It is a sterling proof that UOJ is in this battle against molesters "lishma".
UOJ wrote
ReplyDelete"Unfortunately things have not gone quite as well as the Rabbonim have liked, and that's because there are many people involved who are not listening to the Rabbonim.
-----------------
YOU ARE A FILTHY LIAR! THE RABBONIM INVOLVED ARE NO BETTER THAN THE GEDOIIILIM IN THE AGUDAH AND MARGULIES! IF THEY COULD COVER IT UP SUCCESSFULLY THEY WOULD! NO MORE COVERUPS - EVER AGAIN!
Please relax and leave judgement on matters like this to people who know what is going on. I do not know who that poster was but he/ she is saying the truth."
Maybe I am wasting my breath writing this but while I admire your mission of stopping molestation in the Jewish community, your methods are wrong and disgusting. You don't know these Rabbonim and the people involved and you don't know what happened. How do you dare to talk like that?????
I'm always amazed at the people who claim to know what I know and don't know.
ReplyDeleteYou are wasting your breath - but you can vent here all you want! I'll continue to do EXACTLY what I'm doing and will not change a thing - other than to turn up the heat in every way possible - in the language of my choice!
You got a better way? Prove it!
...No I won't and can't relax while Yiddishkeit, in every aspect, is turning into a farce!
ReplyDeleteUOJ, You have my haskama on the way you dealt with this situation till now, and NO! there is no other way of dealing with these farce gedoilem who are nothing but theives, money launderers, rapists & murderers of the jewish soul (& in some instances body) for the last 50 years, and all was fine an dandy till you showed up, the s**t hit the fan as one case after another comes to light, don't ever give up, and thank you roto rooter for helping us clean this stinken neighborhood, may hashem give you the strength to see this fight to its very end.
ReplyDeleteOn Arutz Sheva a few days ago there
ReplyDeletewas the story of a relgious family,
I think hareidi but I am not sure
who left there 3 year old child
at the airport not realizing she
was not on the plane until 45
minutes after take off
when they were informed she was
at the airport and not on the
plane.
This is a perfect example of why
what happpened in RBS is so typical
of people who worry more about
appearence then they do about their
children.
These are the same people who
endanger a community by hiring
Arab labor to safe a shekel.
They study Torah but do not live
Torah or really understand how to
apply it.
Abusing a first or second grader
is the lowest form of abuse because
they are dealing with an innocent
who will be damaged for at least
most of his childhood.
Those who try and cover it up have
no right to be communal leaders
and should step down. Excuseme we
are in Israel and they learn from
the Prime Minister that when you
are in a leadership position you
hang on and keep your position
no matter what even if the country
goes down the drain.
I heard that the teacher refused to take the polygraph test, so the investigator told the parents to report to the police.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am a parent in the school and the rebbe not only refused the test but refused any more cooperation with the Charedi investigator.
ReplyDeleteThe irony is that this investigator was chosen by the rabbonim to help protect the rebbe from the police!
I guess that this is his admission of guilt.
I must commend the OUJ and the people posting. As one of the parents I can attest that people have not changed the facts as far as I can tell. It has been very healing to read so many people's thoughtful and supportive concerns.
ReplyDeleteThe facts remain however, that this case was not handled well by the Rabbonim. This investigator doesn't have the qualifications, and the whole process just interfered with the BEST way to handle this, which was to go to the police and professional psychologists and get help ASAP.
Let the people trained to investigate crime to the investigation and the people trained to heal heal.
Thank you OUJ for helping us start to heal.
Does anyone know how to get a hold of Chaim Kaminetsky from the Chevrah Pesach program?
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have his cell or home number?
I can't get him at his nursing home or at his 800 number?
Please help.
This case mirrors so many of the other cases. When will they ever learn? Just go to the police! If the community gives you a hard time, refer them to Rav Elyashiv's psak regarding din rodeif. Again, THIS IS NOT MESIRA, IT'S PIKUACH NEFASHOS!!! In Brooklyn, we had a few cases recently of the victims going to the police. In the Colmer case, it happened, albeit a bit late, but he was extradited and he's now at Riker's Island, and in the case of Yona Weinberg. We still have a ways to go in educating the klal in how to deal with these cases, put we're getting there, little by little, thanks in no small part to the efforts of UOJ. Chazak Veematz my friend and never let up in this fight!
ReplyDeleteThe United States is in the second inning of a recession that will last for at least 18 months and help kill off hundreds of banks, influential economist and New York University Professor Nouriel Roubini told Barron's in Sunday's edition.
ReplyDeleteTaxpayers will pay a big price for helping bail out the rest of the financial services industry as well, Roubini said -- at least $1 trillion and more likely $2 trillion.
The banks will become insolvent because of mounting losses as a result of the housing bust and because they have only written down their subprime loans so far, he said. Still in front of them are their consumer-credit losses, for which they lack the reserves, Barron's reported.
He also said there are hundreds of millions of dollars outstanding in home-equity loans that could be worth zero, too.
U.S. consumers, meanwhile, are "shopped out" and saving less, while the Federal Reserve's performance in handling the crisis has been poor, Roubini said, because it failed to see that the problem extended beyond subprime mortgage debt.
Now, Roubini told Barron's, the government is overregulating, bailing out troubled participants and intervening in every market.
"The regulators should investigate themselves for bailing out Fannie Mae (FNM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the creditors of Bear Stearns and the financial system with new lending facilities. They have swapped U.S. Treasury bonds for toxic securities," he told Barron's. "It is privatizing the gains and profits, and socializing the losses as usual. This is socialism for Wall Street and the rich."
He said that sometimes it is necessary to use public money to rescue institutions, but in a way that does not bail out the people who made the mistakes. "In each one of these episodes, the government bailed out the shareholders, the bondholders, and to some degree, management," Roubini told Barron's.
As for the banks that will go bankrupt, they will include community banks that finance homes, stores, downtown areas, commercial real estate and other mainstays of U.S. towns and cities, Roubini said.
"Of three dozen or so medium-sized regional banks, a good third are in distress," he told Barron's, saying half of the group could go bankrupt. Some big banks could wind up insolvent, he added, but said they might be deemed too big to fail.

The police in Baltimore are saying that the jewish parents are worse even than the Catholics. They protect their rabbis over their own kids. UOJ, I'm surprised you haven't posted prominently about the case in St. Louis and Rabbi Smason who spoke to the press and said how broken hearted he was as a Jew that the community came to the defense of the molester who ended being convicted and sentenced to 7 years in jail, and completely abandoned and shunned the victim.
ReplyDeleteYou can get it off Vicki Polin's site. Rabbi Smason is one of the good ones. A real Tzaddik and Ish Emes. Although he clearly is not looking for limelight, I think we need to use him as an example of the good that individuals can do. He has his own website called ourpreciouskids.org.
Please help some more. The contact numbers for Chaim Kaminetsky of the Chevrah did not help. Does anyone have his home number and his cell number?
ReplyDeleteCell or phone number of his kids?
I heard that the teacher has been permanently removed at this point.
ReplyDeleteThe welfare of the children has been missing from this discussion. There is a strong presumption that more than one boy was abused and that many were tramatized. Parents have the right and obligation to protect their children and get them the best available professional help immediately. The process described prevents them from doing so, until a Haredi investigator, who is not trained, comes to a conclusion. Not placing the safety of seven year old boys first is inexcusable.
ReplyDeleteYosef Blau
P.S. I was contacted by a parent in the class and was informed that the parents were not informed immediately about the investigation and were discouraged from seeking help for their children.

ReplyDeleteCan My Shrink Rat Me Out?
Did Bruce Ivins’ therapist have to say that her patient was a homicidal sociopath?
By Juliet Lapidos
Posted Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at 5:53 PM ET
The psychotherapist who treated Bruce E. Ivins, the deceased suspect in the 2001 anthrax attacks, told a Maryland court on July 24 that her patient was a “sociopathic, homicidal” maniac who planned to kill his co-workers and that he had “attempted to murder several people” using poison as far back as 2000. Did she have to drop a dime on her patient, or could she have kept quiet?
It’s murky. The 1996 Supreme Court case Jaffee v. Redmond officially recognized psychotherapist-patient privilege in federal courts. That decision, concerning a police officer accused of excessive force who sought to keep his social worker’s notes out of a trial, states that “effective psychotherapy … depends upon an atmosphere of confidence and trust in which the patient is willing to make a frank and complete disclosure of facts.” Patients, in other words, should feel secure that what they reveal in a clinical setting is between them and their psychologists. Although all states recognize some form of this privilege, 27 of them, including Maryland, require therapists to breach confidentiality if the patient poses a serious danger of violence to others. (In some other states, psychologists have explicit permission to warn the cops but aren’t obligated to do so.)
The exact nature of this requirement varies slightly from state to state, but the general formulation is that a mental-health professional must warn either the police or the potential victim if a patient makes a specific threat against an identifiable third party. That is, the patient has to be doing more than just blowing off steam (“God, I’m gonna kill my boss!”). He has to have an actual plan (“I’m going to buy a gun”) and an actual victim (“and shoot my neighbor”) in mind. But it’s up to the therapist to decide if the patient truly intends violence and is capable of carrying out the threat. Arguably, Duley could have kept quiet if she thought Ivins’ apparent plan to kill his co-workers was really just a fantasy.
The “duty to warn” concept dates back to the 1974 case Tarasoff v. Regents of the University of California. In Tarasoff, a patient told his therapist that he intended to kill a young woman who had spurned him. A couple of months later he did so, and her parents sued the therapist for failing to warn their daughter. The case ended up in the Supreme Court of California, which ruled that therapists have a “duty to warn” not just the police (which the therapist had done) but the potential victim as well. In a 1976 rehearing, the court replaced the phrase “duty to warn” with “duty to protect.”

ReplyDeleteDisgusting how Pinny Lipschutz goes so veit to cover up for Rubashkin.
He even tries to appeal to the Lakewood oylam that Weissmandel is a Brisker talmid.
Mr. UOJ,
ReplyDeleteI posted before asking you to relax and not call people who are saying the truth FILTHY LIAR.
Please see this http://lifeinisrael.blogspot.com/2008/08/was-there-cover-up.html
Is it too much to ask for you to make a public retraction and to admit you didn't know enough about the case?
Best Regards.
Anon:
ReplyDeleteI would have absolutely no problem admitting to a mistake, none! I've apologized unashamedly, when for example, I named the wrong person in the Tuvya matter. I apologized personally - publicly, privately, and through a friend. I offered monetary compensation to a tzedaka in his name.
I am convinced beyond any doubt whatsoever, that the rabbis involved in this case attempted every sort of coverup possible, under many different guises of credible attempts to resolve this issue. All those attempts were in fact a facade - and not until I went public and worked the UOJ tactics behind the scenes, did the rabbis agree to terminate this molester scumbag.
So please....GIMMMMEEEEEAAAABREAK!
Please help some more. The contact numbers for Chaim Kaminetsky of the Chevrah did not help. Does anyone have his home number and his cell number?
ReplyDeleteCell or phone number of his kids?
If you believe that 100% than I can hear why you wouldn't want to retract and apologize. I have no problem with that. I Just happen to know 100% that you are wrong. But it is your blog and you will do as you wish and I will just move on.
ReplyDeleteBy the way in you asked me before to prove that there is a better way of getting public change. I cannot prove anything but I have seen social change. I have seen it happen spearheaded by people acting with dignity and respect. It happens from people who make an honest attempt to contact authorities and influence the honorable public, people who can make a difference.
IMHO by expressing yourself the way you do about respected people or for that matter any people you are relegating your blog to the lower end sewer system of the Internet instead of being part of a noble effort to positive change.
I wish you well and good luck with your efforts.
In many of these cases there are a wife and children of the perpetrator that require consideration. Most of these family members are unaware of the monster they live with. Without absolving the rabbonim for their inaction or cover ups or worse, they may be also trying to protect these innocents with as much tact as possible.
ReplyDeleteThat said, why are these innocents more worthy of protection than actual innocent victims?
I once asked my Rav about certain teachers in my children's school who were clearly unqualified and had been a turn-off to many students over the years. Parents had been complaining about these guys for years, but the hanhalla was always concerned about the teachers ability to make a parnassa and feed their many children. My Rav said that the whole line of thinking was wrong. If it is all about putting food on the table, find them another job, but don't feed them classes of children year after year.
This was not a case of abuse. How much more so should the rabbonim be reacting when abuse is the issue. I feel sorry for the abuser's family, but he is the one at fault, not everyone else. Unfortunately, they should get less consideration than others. A truly just community will help them too, after the perp is tossed in prison.
I Just happen to know 100% that you are wrong.

UOJ is correct about these rabbonim in RBSA.
I live here, I am very familiar with this case and the steps that the rabbonim did/did not take.
They jeopardized children and other innocents in the name of the "greater good" of a charedi rebbe's name.
It has come out that he is guilty. His enablers and defenders are as well.

ReplyDeleteCommittee Working to Protect Public from In-Flight Movies Sends Delegation to HaRav Kanievsky
By Yechiel Sever
A delegation representing the Rabbinical Committee for Transportation Matters was received by HaRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita at his home and received his blessings for success in the efforts to protect travelers from immodest entertainment on airplanes.
During the visit the delegation demonstrated their new folding mechitzoh designed to hide the main cabin screens from view in order to protect people from seeing inappropriate images.
After erecting the mechitzoh — which can be folded to 25 cm (10 inches) — on HaRav Kanievsky's table, the delegation members asked whether it appeared bizarre and would be liable to cause chilul Hashem, but he allayed their concerns, saying "it's a kiddush Hashem!"
They also asked him about non-Jewish travelers sitting behind them who complain the mechitzoh obstructs their view of the screen, but HaRav Kanievsky dismissed these concerns as well.
At the end of their visit HaRav Kanievsky said he was pleased with the solution the delegation presented to improve modesty on airplanes and blessed them for success. For information on flights without movies and regarding the mechitzoh call 057-3155613.

ReplyDeleteRabbonim and Educators in Netanya Oppose Performance
By Y. Ariel
Rabbonim and educators in Netanya have come out against a performance scheduled for next week (following Tisha B'Av) claiming to be chareidi. In a letter they issued the rabbonim note, "We were very disturbed to hear about the individuals who are scheming to hold publicly and openly in our city a family event [billed as a `happening'] that contains terrible immodesty and has been banned by all gedolei Yisroel." Following the objections voiced by the rabbonim, the Netanya Municipality withdrew its sponsorship for the event.
The letter, which is signed by rabbonim and educators from Netanya, including roshei kollelim, neighborhood rabbis, synagogue rabbis, institution heads and morei tzedek, calls on Netanya residents to boycott the event, saying, "Anyone who lends a hand and strengthens these people who lead others to sin is considered to have breached the walls set by the rabbis." They also note gedolei Yisroel shlita have clearly stated their opposition to "arvei shira," where singers appear before mixed audiences — even when separate sections are arranged.
Chareidi councilmen, who conveyed the objections of the rabbonim to the city council, report that the municipality has decided to withdraw its support.
I can be reached at 1-800-FRESSER.
ReplyDeleteI called 1-800-FRESSER. The guy who answered the phone was very defensive and insisted that the hotline is affiliated strictly with the Agudah. He says a Young Israel Fresser like Kaminetzky has no business speaking in their name.
ReplyDeleteMost of these family members are unaware of the monster they live with. Without absolving the rabbonim for their inaction or cover ups or worse, they may be also trying to protect these innocents with as much tact as possible.
ReplyDeleteAnd the rabbonim know for certain that these monsters aren't chas v'shalom molesting their own children, or their nieces and nephews?
To those who defend the rabbonim,
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you in principle if the rabbonim here were as supportive of the school's families as they were of the rebbe and school itself.
I am a class parent and have had NO contact about the welfare of my child, etc. from the school OR the rabbonim. As a matter of fact the only contact I had was from someone asking me if I'd be ok with the rebbe returning for the end of the year.
From my understanding the family has not been contacted by the rabbonim with the exception of one call to try to persuade them to use a therapist.
IMHO if the rabbonim are in this "lishma" they would have reached out to the family in some way.
I believe that there is an agenda here on the part of our rabbinic leadership.
I just received an e-mail from an ‘off-the-Derech’ (OTD) young man. The words are heartbreaking to the point of tears. The story he tells is a devastating indictment of how a community is failing them. These troubled souls are as Jewish and holy as any other Jewish soul. But they have been discarded and left to rot.
ReplyDeleteI am not accusing anyone of nefarious motives here. I am not even saying that there weren’t any attempts to help. But there is something horribly wrong when an entire community of formerly religious Jews from fine families is allowed to end up in the gutter - with feelings of hopelessness and resentment. It is an indictment of those who had opportunities to help them - and dropped the ball. Big time! Even if their intentions were good.
I want to clearly state that the comments and accusations made in the post are made out of a sense of frustration and anger and are not necessarily my own views. I posted them verbatim to demonstrate exactly how they feel – and why they feel that way. It is important to know the un-sugarcoated truth. I don’t blame them one bit for feeling this way.
This young man is exposing a raw nerve to the public. His post is a plea - a wake up call to what is happening right in front of us to the children of some of the finest families in Chicago. I am beside myself with both sadness and anger.
The post is verbatim with the exception of my editing some minor of typos. I think we ought to pay attention.
I am a non-frum former yeshiva guy. I went through the stages of being “at-risk” and OTD now I’m simply not frum. Without knowing my background there is no way anyone would know I ever affiliated with Jews. I’m not proud of my decision to give it all up. Along with quite a few others we just simply couldn’t take the pain.
We all share similar backgrounds. We are all kids of the “establishment”, or families supported by the “establishment”, or have parents looked at as meek. Because our parents aren’t in the position to protect us we are sitting ducks.
Sick predators who are members of or close to leaders of the “establishment” know they are protected. They then start preying on the sitting targets.
The pain of knowing we were hurt BECAUSE our parents would lose their jobs if they make waves… the pain of knowing we were targeted BECAUSE our parents risk losing money from chessed places if they try to help us… the pain of knowing we were targeted BECAUSE our parents aren’t pushy and thugs… this pain is too much to handle.
My father refused to allow me to come forward out of fear for his job. A few kids tried their luck with the “rabbis” of the city. The answers show Al Capone is still alive and well in Chicago .
They were called liars, yelled how they talked lashon hara and will burn for it - all the way up to threatening them and their families. I thought murdering someone is a bigger problem than lashon hara. These fakers try to protect their turf by yelling about lashon hara. I know it’s a big sin but does it outweigh protecting kids? Our lives are not lives. We’re miserable.
But this was the final blow to my being Jewish. My mother pleaded and cried for me to come for Seders this year. My father showed a human side I never saw before and begged me to come back home. They said with all the awareness the community woke up.
They finally risked ruffling feathers and took me to a “rabbi” in town. His answer was “Before I could have helped you - but now that you went OTD you have no nemanus (trustworthiness)”. I threw my yamikah in his face and called him what he is and stormed out.
I’m not going to depress you with details how we burn our lives away. I will say is Jews for J and other places give us more comfort and heart-to-heart talks than we ever got before. Besides for one frum guy everyone else gave up on us.
I got a GED and will start college in Fall so I could live a productive life. The problem is for every kid who succeeds another five kids end up on the street to take his place. Trust me, its no fun talking with us.
Have a physically easy fast but a meaningful emotional one. We OTD guys want to see if the Jewish community can make things right. We doubt its possible but will give one more try. We don’t want to harm the families of these sick evil people, all we want is for them to STAY AWAY FROM KIDS.
We are writing vague in the hope that those who know who we’re talking about get the message. As my father says in Hebrew “Dai Lchakima Brmiza - a wise man gets hints.
DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick spent the night in a one-man jail cell with no TV and a phone only for collect calls, the consequence of violating his bond in a criminal case that has dogged him for months.
ReplyDeleteHis legal problems could get much worse.
State police have wrapped up their investigation of a confrontation between Kilpatrick and a sheriff's detective who claims he was pushed while recently trying to serve a subpoena on the mayor's friend.
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox scheduled a news conference Friday morning to announce the results. Kilpatrick's legal team was not optimistic, predicting that some kind of charge was a "done deal."
"If they want to bring the charges, let's go. It's the only way to get it resolved," defense attorney Jim Parkman said.
Separately, the mayor and a former top aide are charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice, all tied to their testimony in a civil trial last year. At the heart of the case: steamy text messages contradicting their claim that they didn't have a romantic relationship.
"I'm asking for another chance," the mayor pleaded Thursday to District Judge Ronald Giles.
The judge's response was swift and surprising: Jail for the leader of the country's 11th-largest city.
"I don't claim to have a good understanding of what your responsibilities are. ... But I have to look at how the (court) system is run and perceived by the public," Giles told Kilpatrick.
In May, the Detroit City Council asked Gov. Jennifer Granholm to invoke a little-used state law and remove Kilpatrick from office for misconduct. A hearing is scheduled for Sept. 3.
Ever sat there and looked at the webcam in your laptop wondering if maybe someone, somewhere was, you know, watching you? Chances are that's just you being paranoid, but for a few unfortunate female students in Florida who relied on a supposed friend to fix their laptop computers, such fears were well-founded. Their no-fee technician, 23-year-old Craig Matthew Feigin, not only fixed the problems they reported to him, but also installed software on their laptops to automatically take pictures from their webcams and upload them to a remote server.
ReplyDeleteOne such student, Marisel Garcia, noticed her laptop was running unusually slowly after having Feigin work on it. She also noticed that a light on it popped on whenever she walked by. That light was the indicator of the integrated webcam turning on, taking pictures of her in various states of undress.
She went to the police and Feigin readily confessed, indicating "eight or nine more potential victims" according to the police in Gainesville, Florida. Unlike the 'Porky's' movies, where these sorts of hijinx would have been laughed at, Feigin is now facing felony charges
Just two days after sister company Freddie Mac posted hugely disappointing quarterly results, Fannie Mae, the largest U.S. home funding source, reports a $2.3 loss -- more than triple what Wall Street had expected.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't really matter how much money Fannie loses. That's because taxpayers will pay to bail it out -- not its highly paid executives.
Daniel Mudd, Fannie Mae CEO, said "credit performance has continued to deteriorate and, based on our experience in July, we anticipate further increases in our combined loss reserves,"
What to do? Mudd -- whose name is mud in my book -- says Fannie Mae will reduce its dividend from 35 cents a share to 5 cents a share and stop buying Alt-a mortgages -- those "made to borrowers with solid credit but little proof of their income, or small or no down payments." And Mudd says Fannie won't need our money for a bailout.
If Fannie does use our money, will the SEC prosecute Mudd for spreading false rumors? Don't hold your breath. Meanwhile its stock is down 14% in pre-market.
The Associated Press reports that jobless claims -- at 455,000 -- hit a six-year high in July. Analysts underestimated the total by 25,000, as they forecast 430,000 such claims. When combined with this morning's disappointing July retail sales results, the economy appears to be doing worse than experts expected.
ReplyDeleteAP reports that many companies announced layoffs recently. These include General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM), Weyerhaeuser Co. (NYSE: WY), Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX) and Bennigan's restaurants. More such layoffs are likely to be announced as the economy prepares a recessionary banquet of woes for the presidential candidates.
The lesson for those interested in economics is pretty clear. You can create the illusion of prosperity by borrowing lots of money. If someone lends me $100 million and I buy a big estate on Long Island, people will think I am rich. But if I can't pay back the loan, the bank will kick me out of the house and suddenly I won't look so well off.
That's what the banks are doing now across wide swaths of the economy. And it will be years before the mess is cleaned up.

America's Fastest-Dying Cities
ReplyDeleteBy Joshua Zumbrun, Forbes.com
Aug 5th, 2008
Where's it worst? Ohio, according to our analysis, which racked up four of the 10 cities on our list: Youngstown, Canton, Dayton and Cleveland.
The runner-up is Michigan, with two cities--Detroit and Flint--making the ranking.
"If someone lends me $100 million and I buy a big estate on Long Island, people will think I am rich."
ReplyDeleteGee, I wonder who Professor Cohan is referring to?
Even at the peak, Youngstown had the lowest average home price in the country at $176,000, about a fifth of the prices in Flatbush.
ReplyDeleteThere is still an orthodox synagogue in Youngstown. Those who telecommute to work should consider opening up a yeshiva and moving there. It could pull a lot of people out of their financial holes.
Crown Heights Woman Dead Of Drug Overdose
ReplyDeleteAug 08, 2008
Brooklyn N.Y. -- The funeral of a woman who grew up in a observant Crown Heights Lubavitch home took place Thursday afternoon at Shomrei Hadas Chapel in Boro Park. Burial was at Montefiore Cemetary. The woman, pictured here at four years old receiving a dollar from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, was 28 years old.
The woman, who had somewhat of a troubled past for some years now since leaving Bais Rivkah Lubavitch Girls School, overdosed on drugs some hours before. She did not wake up from the drug induced sleep.
Family members report that they were aware of her addiction and had tried to get her help several times over the past few years, but the woman was resistant.
In recent months, there have been increasing calls for the leadership of various Orthodox Kehillos to do more to address the problem of substance abuse and drug addiction in their midst. Some feel that particularly in Chasidish communites like Satmar and Lubavitch, too much of this sort of behavior is being "swept under the rug" and is not being addressed.
Looks like another slap on wrist is all that's coming.

Although child-labor violations are prosecuted as criminal offenses in Iowa, the defendants in such cases are the employing corporations, not the individual executives who may have been responsible for the alleged wrongdoing, said Iowa Workforce Development spokeswoman Kerry Koonce.
The violations are considered a misdemeanor offense and carry a fine of roughly $50 per day, per violation.
If a company is found to have continuously violated two separate child-labor laws by employing just one child for one full year, the potential fine would total $36,500. In the Agriprocessors matter, with 57 separate cases, each involving multiple violations over an undefined period of time, the minimum potential fine could be substantial.
“We could be looking at $500,000 to $1 million in fines,” Koonce said.
