A Stuyvesant High School librarian has been arrested and charged with harassment and sexual abuse for inappropriately touching four male students, city investigators said on Thursday.

A report by the special commissioner of investigation, Richard J. Condon, said that the librarian, R. Christopher Asch, 56, who is also an adviser to the school’s quiz bowl team, gave massages to several boys while on duty in the school’s library.

The boys objected to Mr. Asch’s advances, but he continued to touch them, the report said. At one point, he grabbed a student’s leg and massaged it, and in another case, he ran his fingers through one boy’s hair while the student was studying, the report said.

Mr. Asch was expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon and charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of third-degree sexual abuse and two counts of second-degree harassment.

Mr. Asch’s lawyer, Donald Vogelman, said Mr. Asch intended to plead not guilty. “Mr. Asch denies any improper behavior involving students,” Mr. Vogelman said.

Mr. Asch was reassigned to a teacher detention center after investigators issued the report substantiating the charges in May 2008. The Department of Education is moving to fire him.

Investigators have also substantiated a separate complaint that Mr. Asch took seven students on an unauthorized trip to Harvard University to participate in a quiz bowl competition, according to Mr. Condon’s report. Stuyvesant officials did not approve the trip, and the parents of one student objected to sending their child, the report said.

The students said in the report that the touching episodes occurred from September 2004 through February 2008, when Mr. Asch grabbed the leg of a boy, the report said. The four boys decided to report Mr. Asch to school officials after that episode.

Mr. Asch started working in city schools in 1989 and spent most of his career as a high school librarian. He came to Stuyvesant in 2002, according to the Department of Education, and his annual salary is $86,590.

  3. In the aftermath of Wednesday’s shooting at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, the New York Police Department has mobilized units to protect Jewish-related sites across the city.

The Police Department’s initial action came within minutes of the attack in Washington, which left a security guard fatally wounded, and such reinforcement is continuing.

“We immediately responded with coverage at the Holocaust Museum in Battery Park City and other museums and institutions in the city,” the Police Department’s chief spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said on Thursday.

Mr. Browne added that units are focusing on about 60 locations across the five boroughs, including Yeshiva University, the Park Avenue Synagogue and the Jewish Museum of New York.

The two Bronx synagogues that were reported to be targets in last month’s foiled bomb plot — the Riverdale Jewish Center and the Riverdale Temple — are also on the Police Department’s watch list.

In some locations a fixed post made up of a marked car and two officers provides a visible, stationary presence.

Elsewhere, the police are deploying Critical Response Vehicle surge tactics — when a swarm of around 70 police cars meet at a rendezvous point before descending as a show of force on a pre-selected location.

Mr. Browne explained that the surge tactics — part of the department’s counterterrorism capacity — are often used to respond to terrorist attacks and threat information, both in the United States and abroad.

“The C.R.V.’s, they get deployed depending on what is going on around the world,” he said on Thursday. “Yesterday they were directed toward Jewish institutions.”

Heavily armed Hercules teams, who carry more powerful weapons than regular patrol officers and wear body armor and helmets, are also at Jewish sites, Brown said.

  4. Dear UOJ,

John asked that I send this to you, since the both of you were involved in setting up this operation.

Regards from all of us here.

    Ghosts In The Machine

On the streets of South Florida, in the witching hour, an unassuming white van is lurking the darkness. But if one dared to take a look inside the van, they’d see that it’s filled with highly-trained forensic technicians and state-of-the-art technology, working to detect strange activity in the neighborhood.

What exactly is this van, called the “ECTO 1,” looking for? Ghosts?

    Well, sort of.

In reality, cops say the child predators they’re actually after are similar to those phantom apparitions from spooky Hollywood movies. Even though they’re invisible and difficult to identify, they continue to haunt the information superhighway, spreading child pornography across the network and terrorizing unsuspecting kids.

According to AMW producer Cindy Anderson, who worked with the task force on what they call “Operation Orange Tree,” the ECTO 1 van possesses the technology necessary to zero in on an offender’s wireless routers, digital footprints, and illegal downloads.

“They told me before they had ECTO 1, they had to go into homes and analyze computers. This took hours sometimes,” Cindy says. “They had to wear gloves because some of the homes were filled with cockroaches and dirt. With ECTO 1, the computers are seized from the homes with a search warrant and then analyzed in their nice, new, cockroach-free van.”

So far, “Operation Orange Tree” has busted 77 men accused of downloading child pornography, and rescued five children from suspected sexual abusers. Cindy and AMW correspondent John Turchin rode along with the ECTO 1 and stood right outside the homes they raided.

“I love roundups, sweeps, and raids. We could see and hear everything,” Cindy says. “It starts with that loud knock on the door: ‘Police!’ The only downside is they start their briefings at 4 or 5 a.m.!"

As journalists accompanying law enforcement on a dangerous raid, Cindy and John were prohibited from viewing the computer files, but as a mother of three young children who lives in South Florida, Cindy was OK with that.

“I have three little girls and I cherish their precious innocence,” Cindy says. “I somehow hope that my work with AMW and this task force helps make this place safer, and promotes the hard work of cops who have the same goal.”

This Saturday night, ride along with Operation Orange Tree and join cops on the manhunt. But the operation didn’t round up all the suspects: we’ve profiled more suspected child predators at AMW.com, and cops need your help to track them down.

Von Brunn went off the deep end after Obama got elected. Let's hope Shmarya doesn't "go postal" either just because most of us don't like Obama.

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Filed at 9:25 p.m.

James von Brunn carried a lifetime of hatred and an aging rifle to the entrance of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, authorities say, and was met with a simple act of kindness: a security guard opening the door for him.

Critically injured in a hospital bed Thursday, the 88-year-old white supremacist was charged with murdering Steven Johns, the black guard. According to interviews with family, friends and civil rights groups, von Brunn spent decades spewing hate toward Jews and blacks - a hatred nearing a crescendo in the weeks before the shooting.

At least one acquaintance said he suspected von Brunn was preparing for a violent end.

Von Brunn talked about giving up ''precious things'' - even the computer from which he spread his angry diatribes against Jews, interracial dating and the government, said fellow white supremacist John de Nugent.

De Nugent said von Brunn complained that his Social Security benefits had been reduced, and he suspected that his white supremacist views were the reason.

''He was unhappy with his living situation,'' de Nugent said.

Von Brunn lived in a condo in Annapolis, Md., with his 32-year-old son, Erik von Brunn, and his son's fiancee. The couple charged him $400 a month and when he moved in two years ago, he brought two rifles with him, the fiancee, Brandy Teel, told FBI agents.

When next-door neighbor Harold Olynnger, 82, invited von Brunn over for a drink about 3 months ago, it didn't go well.

Von Brunn sipped vodka tonic and talked about how he believed the media paid too much attention to the Holocaust, Olynnger said.

On his Web site, von Brunn said he is a descendant of German immigrants who became convinced Jews controlled the government.

He took his rants on May 29 to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis to complain about increased minority enrollment -- which will be about 35 percent for the Class of 2013. He walked into the administration building and wanted a meeting with academy officials, said spokesman Cmdr. Joe Carpenter.

He never got the meeting and staff quickly notified Navy investigators because of ''the extreme views he expressed regarding minorities,'' Carpenter said.

Von Brunn boasted of having spent a year in jail for fighting a sheriff's deputy in Maryland in 1968 and, a quarter-century later, of serving prison time for trying to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve board.

After he got out, he became a regular in white supremacist circles and soon had his own file with watch groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. He wrote an anti-Semitic text and maintained conspiracy theories on the Web site.

The St. Louis native worked in advertising in New York City and moved to Maryland's Eastern Shore in the late 1960s.

Public records show that in 2004-2005 he lived briefly in Hayden, Idaho, home to the Aryan Nations, a racist group run by neo-Nazi Richard Butler.

When he lived in Easton, Md., von Brunn had a series of run-ins with local residents. He hired Robert Denney to create a Web site, then sued him when Denney realized the sort of material von Brunn wanted to publish and balked, said Harry Walsh, Denney's attorney.

In 1994, von Brunn was upset that The Star Democrat of Easton wouldn't run an ad for an anti-Semitic program on a public-access channel, recalled executive editor Denise Riley. Von Brunn spouted a series of racist and anti-Semitic comments before he was asked to leave the newsroom, Riley said.

''I was stunned to have met anyone who acted like that. I don't remember encountering anyone that bigoted before in my life,'' Riley said. ''He was just so angry, it was alarming to be around him.''

A.I.G. Balks at Claims After Jet Lands in Hudson

    By MARY WILLIAMS WALSH

For the first couple of days after his flight ditched into the Hudson River, Paul Jorgenson was just glad to be alive. But then he started to need his laptop, his wallet, his car keys — all the essentials he had stowed under his seat and left behind in the sinking plane.

A pleasant woman at US Airways told him not to worry; he would be made whole for his losses. But then the matter shifted to US Airways’ insurer, the American International Group, operating under government stewardship since its bailout last fall.

“Everything went downhill,” said Mr. Jorgenson, a software executive in Charlotte, N.C., whose laptop and keys have not been recovered.

When a homeowner has a burglary or a driver has a crash, all it normally takes is a call to the insurance company and a description of the loss to activate the policy. But aviation liability insurance is different. It is activated by a finding of negligence on the part of an airline. If there is no negligence, then arguably there is no liability, and no obligation to pay claims.

That poses a problem for the passengers of US Airways Flight 1549. They suffered real losses and injuries, but they are widely perceived as having been saved from sudden, violent death by their heroic and quick-thinking flight crew, led by Capt. Chesley B. Sullenberger.

Scott "Shmarya" Rosenberg carried a lifetime of hatred and an aging copy of Darwin's book to the entrance of Lubavitch World headquarters, authorities say, and was met with a simple act of kindness: a rabbi with a pinched black hat opening the door for him.

Critically distressed in a hospital straightjacket Thursday, the 51-year-old anti-orthodox blogger was charged with shoving the book in the face of Rabbi Shmuel Butman. According to interviews with family, friends and orthodox Jewish groups, Rosenberg spent years spewing hate toward orthodox Jews and Republicans - a hatred nearing a crescendo in the weeks before Republicans regained control of the NY State Senate.

At least one acquaintance said he suspected Rosenberg was preparing for a violent end.

Rosenberg talked about giving up ''precious things'' - even the underwear in which he spread his angry diatribes against orthodox Jews, lack of interracial dating and the Bush Administration, said fellow formerly religious blogger David Kelsey.

Kelsey said Rosenberg complained that his unemployment benefits had been reduced, and he suspected that his Liberal views were the reason, in Minnesota headed by a Republican governor.

''He was unhappy with his living situation,'' Kelsey said.

Rosenberg lived in a basement apartment in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area, with his mother. The mother charged him $40 a month which he raised by shnorring on his website, the mother told FBI agents.

When neighbor Rabbi Manis Friedman invited Rosenberg over for a drink about 3 months ago, it didn't go well.

Rosenberg gulped one bottle of cheap malt liquor after another and talked about how he believed the media paid too much attention to Chabad, Friedman said, adding that Rosenberg then ran back to his basement to attack him in a blog posting.

On his Web site, Rosenberg said he is a descendant of German official Alfred Rosenberg who became convinced orthodox Jews were trying to overthrow the Black-controlled Obama government.

He took his rants on May 29 to the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, VA to complain about increased orthodox Jewish employment in government agencies which will increase to about 0.35 percent in 2013. He walked into the administration building and wanted a meeting with high-ranking CIA officials, said Director Leon Panetta.

He never got the meeting and staff quickly notified investigators because of ''the extreme views he expressed against Judaism,'' Panetta said.

Rosenberg boasted of having fought a member of Crown Heights Shomrim in 2008 and later of trying to kidnap members of Rav Elyashev's inner circle.

He became a regular in white supremacist circles and soon had groups such as Stormfront quoting his anti-Jewish conspiracies. He wrote an anti-Semitic text and maintained conspiracy theories on the Web site.

While blogging, Rosenberg has had a series of run-ins with readers. He initially allowed Archie Bunker to post comments, then blocked him when Bunker called him a "meathead" and refuted his arguments, said mental health professionals examining Rosenberg over his paranoid anger against a fictional television character.

In 2004, Rosenberg was upset that The Jewish Week of New York wouldn't publish one of his anti-orthodox op-ed pieces, recalled executive editor Gary Rosenblatt. Rosenberg spouted a series of racist, anti-orthodox comments before he was asked to leave the newsroom, Rosenblatt said.

''I was stunned to have met anyone who acted like that. I don't remember encountering anyone that bigoted before in my life,'' Rosenblatt said. ''He was just so angry, it was alarming to be around him.''

You're running buses to Albany to lobby and want to fill them? Call or email and I'll sell you space or an announcement post.

    Democratic threats 'startling,' Camp says

    By Daily News Staff

Published: Friday, June 12, 2009 10:49 AM EDT

Midland Republican Dave Camp on Thursday called "startling" a news report of threats by Democratic staff against health care professionals who want to meet with Republicans.

Camp, on his website and in e-mail, provided a link to a Roll Call news story. It said that top aides to Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, warned prominent Democratic lobbyists to advise their clients that attending a meeting with Senate Republicans set for Thursday would be viewed as a hostile act.

Camp called that "an attack" on the millions of Americans Republican members represent.

"Health care is not a partisan issue," Camp wrote. "Reforming our health care system will have a significant impact on all Americans -- not just Democrats. We need all voices to be heard in this debate, and revelations that Democrats are trying to stifle free speech and the spirit of democracy -- open debate -- is highly disturbing."

    ReplyDelete
  28. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124476309180208203.html

To understand why Sen. Max Baucus has taken so long to release his health-care reform, tune in to Oregon radio. That's where Mr. Baucus's fellow Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden, has been flayed by unions for his own reform proposals.

"The last thing we need is to pay more," moans a radio ad aired by three labor outfits, including the National Education Association. It excoriates Mr. Wyden for daring to fund his plan with what has become liberal taboo: taxes on existing health-care benefits.

Mr. Baucus, the Finance Committee chairman who is helping lead the Obama health effort, is still deciding what to include in the bill. But his far bigger headache remains how to pay for this blowout. He and other Democrats have been inching toward the taboo benefits-tax, putting them on a collision course with liberal special interests like unions. Mr. Baucus's newest solution? A union payoff.

The cost estimates for the Democrats' health-care reform have by now hit $1.5 trillion over a decade. Goodness knows the architects of this beast -- which they hope will include a new "public option" health entitlement -- have been creative in dreaming up ways to pay for it. In recent months, the administration and Congress have floated ideas to limit tax deductions, penalize soda-pop drinking, tax alcohol, tax salty foods, further raise the price of cigarettes, tax specific companies, charge for carbon, cut Medicare payments, or even implement a national sales tax.

In each case, Democrats have confronted the bitter reality that the proposed tax is too puny (Dr. Pepper tariffs), too doomed (cap-and-trade revenue), or too politically ugly (a sales tax). Contrast this with the tantalizing reality that requiring Americans to pay taxes on some part of the company health-care benefits they now receive for free could easily raise a half-trillion dollars over a decade. In a choice between a dozen niggling tax fights that could yield uncertain revenue, or a bigger fight over benefits taxes that could yield oodles, Mr. Baucus will take the oodles.

But for two small problems. The first is that about 99% of the Democratic Party is on record trashing the idea of taxing health benefits. Trasher-in-chief is none other than President Barack Obama, who mercilessly berated Sen. John McCain for proposing such a change during the 2008 campaign. "Apparently, Senator McCain doesn't think it's enough that your health premiums have doubled. He thinks you should have to pay taxes on them, too," ran one Obama ad. Republicans are, as you read, turning these words into crisp attack ads.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Your tax dollars part 21:31 PM, June 12, 2009

The Democrats' other problem is that the usual populist line won't fly. The party would like to be able to protect itself by saying that only those who now receive the most generous benefits will face taxes. Then again, the Americans who now have the Cadillacs (or, in these post-bailout-days, the Swedish sports car Koenigsegg CCXs) of health-care coverage are union workers. Union workers "would be stuck footing more of the bill than others," says Paul Fronstin, a senior research associate with the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

This was the big gripe back when President George W. Bush first proposed rewriting the tax code to equalize the tax treatment of employer-provided and individually purchased health care (albeit as a means of creating a market-oriented system, rather than funding a federal entitlement). In Michigan, home of the once-mighty auto workers, Sen. Debbie Stabenow growled in 2007: "There are 160,000 people [in Michigan] with excellent health insurance plans . . . who for the first time would end up paying taxes on them."

The attack against Mr. Wyden was an early shot across the Baucus-Obama bow, and it resonated. Mr. Baucus officially floated his plans for a tax this week, only with a surprising twist: His levy will not apply to union plans, at least for the duration of existing contracts. In other words, Mr. Baucus intends to tax the health-care benefits only of those who didn't spend a fortune electing Democrats to office. Sen. Ted Kennedy, who is circulating his own health-care reform, has also included provisions that will exempt unions from certain provisions.

The union carve-out is designed to allay the fears of many Democrats who remain outright hostile to a tax on health-care benefits, whether out of principle, political fear or union solidarity. Much will depend on the union reaction, which might remain ugly. Manufacturing unions in particular view their health-care benefits as sacrosanct, and even a delayed tax is still a tax.

The administration, for its part, is bobbing and weaving. Peter Orszag, Mr. Obama's budget director, said in a recent hearing that a benefits tax "most firmly should remain on the table," a comment immediately followed by White House assurances that, honestly, it hated the idea. Mr. Baucus also recently reported that the president remained open to the idea, a comment again instantly refuted from above. The president may well be attracted to the dollars of a benefit tax, but he's waiting to see if he can blame Congress for dragging him into it.

Jews jailed at the Tombs were welcomed in the chaplain's office, where they would shoot craps, use his secure phone line to place sports bets and eat "like kings," former inmates told The Post yesterday.

'BAR MITZVAH' JAILBIRD PERK AN OUTRAGE: DETECTIVE

Rabbi Leib Glanz also would throw parties several times each year for Jewish prisoners on Rikers Island, where they dined on tasty kosher meals, were entertained by clowns, played basketball and ducked into bathrooms to have sex with female prisoners.

"It was like a party every day. It was great," one ex-con -- a Manhattan man who was awaiting trial in 2005 for a financial scam -- said about Glanz's office in the Tombs in lower Manhattan.

Glanz has been suspended for two weeks for organizing an elaborate bar mitzvah -- complete with 60 non-inmate guests, a catered dinner and a band -- last December for the son of a Tombs inmate.

The Department of Investigation is probing the case, and four other top correction officials have been stripped of their vacation time for permitting the shocking security breach.

The Post yesterday revealed how Glanz routinely coddled Jewish inmates at the Tombs.

"Some of us would use his desk as a craps table and shoot craps for commissary items," the ex-con said.

Jewish inmates also would take advantage of Glanz's office phone -- which was not monitored by correction officers, the ex-con said.

"Guys are fighting with their wives, guys are calling up saying, 'I want to lay $600 down on this game, that game, I want to bet this horse' . . . guys are calling girls for a little phone sex," the ex-con said.

One inmate, trying to raise bail money, called a friend and "told someone he had a secret stash of money" he wanted to access, while other inmates called pals to ask for help hiding evidence, the ex-con said.

After Tyco execs Dennis Kozlowski and Mark Swartz were sentenced to prison for looting their company, they were jailed at the Tombs, where Glanz "took care of them," the ex-con said.

Kozlowski and Swartz are now serving up to 25 years in upstate prisons and could not be reached for comment.

Another ex-con, Jason Itzler -- a former high-end Manhattan pimp -- said Glanz's office "ran like a little sanctuary within the Tombs" when he was jailed there in 2005, before being sent to Rikers for 2½ years.

Itzler and the other ex-con said that during their stints on Rikers, Glanz several times a year would host parties where male and female Jewish inmates -- and those who falsely claimed to be Jewish to get the perk -- would socialize during Jewish holidays.

The ex-con and Itzler said male and female inmates pretending to be Jewish would go into bathrooms to have sex.

"I remember people bragging about it," Itzler said.

  34. ROSENBLUM was accepted as part of the frum establishement because a) he could afford to sit and learn for a while and have his parents pay for his apartment and become one of the starry eyed succesful baalei teshuva who hero worship FFB's and b)he could be used for propoganda purposes to defend the establishment's criminal behavior.

he should simply be ignored. he has eloquently learned to justify the party line but has very rarely come up with anything original that is worth taking note of. he is a party goon, as simple as that.

  35. when harry myrles was aked to post about the roshoh dovid cohen a while ago, he kept obfuscating and claiming he needed written proof. does he have that now? he just couldn't bear to do so because he niavely believed that the cholol of flatbush was a moderate and someone whom he could identify with. he was prepared to ignore all information he had had at his fingertips because this mansupposedly identified with his world view. morality had nothing to do with it.

now because he feels let down because dovid cohen has been exposed for the liar he actually is, he has had no choice but to join the condemnation bandwagon.

he refuses to post about the zokein mamreh of chicago, geddaliah schwartz whothinks he can be mattir all kinds of issurim of aishes ish including gittin which are meusah and which the true poske hador are unanimous about that it is completely invalid.

he refuses to post about the menuvel izzie belsky who makes a mockery of torah by organizing the beating-up of jews and who holds one can be mafkiah kiddushin and all the eida ha'roo like er ve'oynan steinberg and ralbag and mendel epstein etc...

harry myrles is the worst of hypochrites and another big time rosho, the biggest of the hypochrites around. he refuses to acknowledge his niavite and his mistakes. he masquerades as a very rational human being but is bigoted against torah by protecting these thugs and has a long record of doing so. he is also anti learning.

  36. In Agudath Israel affiliate R. Yonoson Rosenblum's piece, he acts as a lawyer in presenting the viewpoint of one side of the situation (the dark side).

Writing in the weekly Hamodia, in its Summer Health section, Rabbi Nisson Wolpin,of Agudath Israel, is now apparently the expert on child abuse for Hamodia.

In the June 10 issue, Rabbi Wolpin advises that "If your child is the victim of abuse, don't blame him. Listen and consult with a competent professional."

Leaving aside the issue that girls, too, are victims of abuse (as many as 1 in 3 girls in the US are sexually abused, vs 1 in 5 boys)...What should have been said is what experts in the field insist is the only solution:

"If your child is possibly the victim of abuse, you and any professional you might choose to contact should immediately notify the authorities. The sooner you act, the better. Do NOT let anyone talk you out of notifying the police. Notifying the police will help your child get the help he or she needs, and help prevent a pedophile from striking again. Any professional is mandated by law to report suspected, possible child abuse, and if a professional contacted by you or anyone else fails to notify the proper authorities, that professional should be reported to the authorities, as he / she does not belong treating children and should have action taken against his / her license."

Some of you may wish to provide Hamodia with emails with your thoughts.

    Petitioner,

    -against-

City of New York Department of Education
    Respondent,

    DeGrasse J.
This is an application for a judgment pursuant to CPLR Article 78 vacating Respondent’s determination that there is probable cause to believe that petitioner, a tenured teacher, had
engaged in sexual harassment in violation of Regulation A-830 of the Department of Education
of the City of New York. By letter dated August 3, 3006, respondent’s Office of Equal
Opportunity (OEO) advised petitioner as follows:
“The Office of Equal Opportunity (“OEO”) has completed its investigation into
[the complainant’s] complaint alleging that you sexually harassed her on June 5“’ and 12th 2006. After a carefully review of the statements submitted by you, [the complainant] and [a witness], it is OEO’s determination that there is probable cause to believe that Chancellor’s Regulation A-830 was violated [sic]. In reviewing the statements made by you, OEO found numerous inconsistencies which led to a lack of credibility. Please note that OEO will consult with your
principal . . . regarding the corrective actions that will be taken regarding your behavior. In addition, OEO is instructing you not to have contact with [the complainant] unless necessitated by work. OEO is also instructing you to cease and desist making comments or taking actions which would be construed to be sexually harassing or retaliatory.”

By a subsequent letter dated September 1, 2006, petitioner was instructed by his principal to limit his contact with the complainant to supervised faculty meetings and to make an appointment for sexual harassment training at OEO.

  38. Really, Archie and others need to lay off Schmarya. I also have a "donate" button on my blog, which no one has ever donated to, as a matter of fact. This is part of what's wrong with the Jewish community in particular and the American society in general - people want something for nothing. It's a mindset that is not sustainable. Would it be better if no one was trying to educate the community?

Or drag the skeletons out of the closet? If Schmarya hadn't focused hard and often on several issues, they would not have become the scandals that they are - and NEED to be.

Blogging takes up a lot of time and effort, hunting for relevant stories, trying to teach and educate a complacent and unwilling audience many of whom have little or no secular education and can't understand even basic principles of human decency due to their holier-than-thou upbringing. It's a thankless effort. Just so you know, his complaint is valid, and he's not the only one tired of working so hard for the betterment of our community and getting nothing for it.

Maybe he doesn't have anything "better" to do, but I have a husband, 4 kids, a garden, a home to take care of and an outside job - not to mention my daily and weekly religious duties. A lot of feminists don't even consider what I do "better" than blogging or being active in trying to educate the community. But I put my life and my keyboard where my mouth is. So I get to be looked down on by three camps - feminists, most Jewish men, and people who think bloggers in general are just troublemakers.

There comes a point where even the best intentioned just can't do it anymore for nothing. Money isn't everything, of course, but must people, even UOJ, get a lot of hate and flack and pretty much NOTHING in return for the effort we make. We do it because we CARE - but even the deepest caring expires when it gets nothing in return. Ask any ignored wife - the deepest love, even of your people, wanes when you're fighting a losing battle alone.

  40. UOJ,

AS YOU KNOW, CHILD MOLESTATION HAS BEEN DEEMED KOSHER AS LONG AS IT IS UNDER RABBINICAL SUPERVISION. JUST ASK YUDI AND LIPA, STEFAN AND LAZAR, ET AL. NOW THE QUEENS VAAD IS FOLLOWING IN THIS TRADITION BY CONTINUING THEIR "HASHGOCHO" OF QUEENS KOSHER PITA IN KEW GARDENS HILLS:

No jail for molester: Plans return to Kew Gardens bakery
BY NICOLE BODE, NY DAILY NEWS

A Queens bakery owner who admits he molested a 10-year-old boy who came in for cookies isn't going to prison - and plans to be back at work next week.

Issac Ebstein, 50, pleaded guilty earlier this week to luring the child into an abusive friendship five years ago at Queens Kosher Pita in Kew Gardens.

He was released without bail and is expected to get a year of probation and sex-offender counseling when he's sentenced. He will not have to register as a pervert.

Prosecutors cut the deal to spare the victim from having to relive the ordeal.

"The child has been severely traumatized and emotionally scarred for life," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.

"Fortunately, the guilty plea will save the youngster from having to testify and recount the situation that he endured."

Ebstein befriended the boy after he came into the bakery to buy treats, authorities said.

On three occasions in 2002, he invited the boy to drive around with him - then touched his genitals and had the boy touch his.

The abuse came to light this February when the boy, now a teenager, told his parents, prosecutors said.

Ebstein pleaded guilty to first-degree attempted sexual abuse and attempted child endangerment. He declined comment when reached at his home.

A woman at Queens Kosher Pita said Ebstein would be back to work tomorrow - a prospect that horrified neighborhood residents.

"If he works here, I will pull him out myself," said a customer named Claudiu, who had just learned about the guilty plea. "There's no way he's coming back here. If he does, we won't buy here anymore."

So what if Issac Ebstein pleaded guilty to child molestation. It's all a tawdry tale with only anecdotal evidence. Even if he really is a molester, his baked goods are still kosher. Remember my smelly poet analogy I used for Rubashkin. Issac Ebstein deserves our praise, just like Bernie Madoff, for admitting his guilt and doing teshuva. I admire him a lot more than Captain Sully.

  43. Agudath Israel can't have it both ways.

On the one hand, they fight every legislation to protect children from being victimized in school settings. Claiming it's a separation of church and state.

On the other hand, they are clammor for Priority 7, and state assistance programs for their schools. They whine to Bloomberg and Patterson how not funding their schools disproportionately affects Orthodox schools (ignore chuch/state).

Yet, Agudath Israel conveniently ignores the main qualification for funding. "All programs receiving these funds must comply with all state safety measures".

By refusing to implement safety measures in schools, Orthodox schools are INELLIGEABLE for any city or state funding.

  44. GOOD JOB BY THE QUEENS VAAD. SHAFRAN IS GOING TO HAVE A FIT:

PUBLIC ADVISORY - SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2009 On Friday, June 12, 2009, the Vaad Harabonim of Queens ordered the retail establishment known as Queens Pita Bakery and/or Queens Kosher Pita, located at 68-38 Main Street, Flushing, NY 11367, to terminate the employment and any ownership interest of Isaac Ebstein, who earlier in the week pled guilty to felony and misdemeanor sex crime-related charges in the State Supreme Court, Queens County. In its hand delivered letter to Queens Pita, signed by Executive Vice-President, Rabbi Chaim Schwartz, the Vaad stated that "by the close of business on June 12, Ebstein shall neither work, nor be present in the store in any capacity whatsoever." Additionally, the letter ordered Queens Pita "to remove Ebstein as an owner, shareholder, officer, director, and/or partner, and provide written evidence." The Vaad was contacted by the victims family, and was closely monitoring the situation. Two senior members of the Vaad Harabonim of Queens were present in court for the guilty plea. The Kosher Supervision Agreement between the Vaad and Queens Pita provides that the Vaad has the discretion to terminate the Agreement upon the conviction of any crime of moral terpitude committed by a store officer or director. This clause was cited by the Vaad in its letter. The decision to order Ebstein's withdrawal as an owner and employee was jointly made by the Vaad and local Kew Gardens Hills congregational rabbis in a special meeting, and upon consultation with legal counsel. Vaad officials have also conferred with Queens Pita owner and proprietor Norman Kohn. Queens Pita has complied with the Vaad directive to immediately terminate Ebstein's employment. The report from the NY Daily News Saturday, June 13, 2009 that Ebstein would be returning to work, based on a statement from an unidentified female employee, is erroneous. Queens Pita continues to be under the supervision of the Vaad.

  45. I don't know if any of you have been following the heated discussion over at Daas Torah, but since Roni refuses to answer my question, I thought I would post it here:

    Ahavah Gayle said...
Roni says: "And at the same time R' Tropper's energy is focused into hel[ping those couples who approach him to help them covnert WHEN THEY ARE SINCERE!"

And who gets to decide whether or not they are "sincere?" Is he rejecting people who are WITHIN the halachic framework simply because they choose not to be Chereidi or fund his community? What is the basis for insisting on chumras/stringencies that all of our grandparents never heard of or practiced to be the standard for new converts? By those standards NOBODY is really Jewish, because we all know good and well - there are plenty of photographs - that in the early part of this century Orthodox women dressed like normal American women and were not distinctive in any way, Jewish immigrant kids went to school with other Americans and associated with them, pretty much everyone had a business or day job, women raised their own kids, not daycare, and so on and so on.

How is it that Tropper gets to insist on standards that everybody here's grandparents and great-grandparents and probably even parents (for many) did not hold to? Where does he get such power - who gave it to him and is it legitimate and according to halacha? Other Rabbis seem to be saying "no."

    June 25, 2009 12:37 AM

A few disjointed and barely coherent posts between Roni and others (not me and not my question) later, I post this:

    Ahavah Gayle says...
Somebody needs to get Roni some meds. That problem with his ability to write grammatical and properly spelled sentences fading in and out randomly surely indicates a brain tumor - or maybe he's possessed.

    June 25, 2009 2:07 AM

Of course I wrote this due to the wildly varying style of Roni's posts which many are claiming is actually Tropper often posting under Roni's name. Roni's reply was this:

    Roni said...
    Ahavah,

I thought your question earlier deserveas answer. thank you for reminding that you deserve no answer!

    June 25, 2009 3:07 AM

So, anyone else want to give it a shot? How is it that Tropper gets to insist on standards [for conversion and/or certification of one's geneology] that everybody here's grandparents and great-grandparents and probably even parents (for many) did not hold to? Where does he get such power - who gave it to him and is it legitimate and according to halacha?
