A peek at next year's AA Fressers Convention - Master of Ceremonies - Marvin Schick Esq.
Hi -- My name is Marvin, and I'm an alcoholic!
Gathering responds - Hi Marvin!
I did not say a "recovering" alcoholic, because that word infers that I am cured. We are never cured; just like an idiot [see above photo with comic book in hand] can never be cured from their mental illness! It took me some time to admit that I'm sick as well as all of you here tonight, really sick. But it's a good start...my advice is to drink borscht instead - right in back of the room -- Avi Shafran will see to it that you get a double on the rocks. Now what's this I hear about kids in yeshiva being molested by their rebbes? Hey...Avi, did you spike my borscht?
Alcoholics Anonymous® Fressers is a fellowship of men and "others who have feet" [edited by ArtScroll] who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking and lying. There are no dues or fees for AA membership (there is a tax at the meat carving station); we are self-supporting through the good graces of the U.S. government contributions. AA Fressers is not allied with any really overly-weird sect like cannibalism, abomination denominations, politics [Vote for Jon Corzine in New Joisy], out of the closet homosexual organizations or institutions, certainly not Yeshiva University; does not wish to engage in any meaningful controversy or dialogue, neither endorses nor opposes [except one] any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholic fressers to achieve sobriety and truthfulness.
IS A.A. Fressers FOR YOU?
Only you can decide whether you want to give A.A. Fressers a try — whether you think it can help you. We who are in A.A.F. came because we finally gave up trying to control our drinking and lying. We still hated to admit that we could never drink and lie [and chew gum] safely at the same time. Then we heard from other A.A.F. members that we were sick. We thought so for years, and now we have UOJ confirming it! [He has not been wrong yet]
Be strong and make sure to return next year, to find out if any of our members have fallen off the borscht wagon; seeing for yourself is believing, no lashon hara would then be necessary.
Now a few words from Rabbi Lipa Margulies shlita who will lead the gathering in reciting the Tehillim.

BALTIMORE — A jury convicted Mayor Sheila Dixon on Tuesday on one count of embezzlement for stealing gift cards that were meant for poor residents
ReplyDeleteShe still faces a trial in March on two perjury counts stemming from an accusation that she failed to report gifts.
Under state law, Ms. Dixon is supposed to be suspended from office after sentencing. But before that happens, her lawyers have said they plan to file post-trial motions and possibly appeal the verdict. If those motions and appeals fail, Ms. Dixon is likely to be forced from office and the City Council president, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, would succeed her as mayor.
The misdemeanor charge carries a minimum sentence of a year, but it is not clear if the prosecutor will seek jail time. Even then, the judge could suspend that sentence in lieu of probationary conditions.
Some residents viewed the trial as politically or racially motivated. Ms. Dixon, who is black and was born and raised in West Baltimore, is a Democrat who leads a majority-black, deeply Democratic city.

From The Business Insider, Dec. 1, 2009:
Gold has finally surpassed the $1200/oz mark.
But it may be going much higher. China is going to increase its holdings signficantly, according to Breakfast With Dave, Gluskin Sheff's analyst newsletter with David Rosenberg.
So significantly, in fact, that gold could hit $2623/oz in the near future.
From Breakfast With Dave:
Gold just capped off its best month in a year — up 14% in November and 34% so far in 2009. Not even the S&P 500 can compete with that. Helping drive the latest gains was the news out of the China Gold Association that the country’s gold demand is on pace this year to exceed 450 metric tonnes, a 14% increase over the 395.6 tonnes in 2008. (In contrast to India, jewelry sales are up double-digits in China so far this year.) By way of comparison, China, which recently surpassed South Africa as the world’s largest producer, is on its way to 310 tons of newly mined output this year, or more than 30% below its level of demand.
It’s not just the middle-class in China that is starting to buy gold, but the central bank, which has very deep pockets, is going to do likewise. We just came across a Bloomberg News article quoting an official from the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (Ji Xiaonan, the Chief) as saying “we recommend China increase its gold reserves to 6,000 metric tons within three-to-five years and possibly to 10,000 tons in eight to 10 years.” China’s reserves, after a 76% buildup since 2003, currently stand at 1,054 tons, so we are talking here about the prospect of some pretty heaving buying in coming years.
If China were to lift their gold reserves to 5,000 tonnes, which is equivalent to about two years of global production, that shift in demand would boost the gold price by $800/oz to around $2,000 ($1,978) based on our models. If China moves towards 10,000 tonnes, well, that would end up taking the gold price to $2,623/ounce if our calculations are in the ball-park.
Sorry to rain on UOJ's hat fest, but Ronnie expects a royalty for every hat shipped to readers.

ReplyDeleteGold futures hit fresh high above $1,200 on weaker dollarRelated stories
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures climbed to a fresh record above $1,200 an ounce Tuesday, as the dollar weakened and as the world's largest gold miner eliminated all of its gold hedges, showing confidence in a rising gold price.
The dollar continued its slide as worries over Dubai's debt woes eased, pushing up dollar denominated commodities prices. Barrick Gold Corp. said it has eliminated its gold hedges ahead of schedule and now has full leverage to the gold price.
Gold for December delivery rose as high as $1,202.70 an ounce. The front-month contract ended up $18, or 1.5%, at $1,199.10 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"The familiar formula of a weaker dollar, high volume, and higher equities still brings new buyers every day," said George Gero, a precious-metals trader for RBC Capital Markets, adding that Barrick's elimination of hedges helped present a bullish view.

RE: TOEIVAH MARRIAGE BILL
Our information is that the New York State Senate is planning to vote today on a bill that would legalize toeivah marriage. This bill is both morally and legally unacceptable, and could lead to serious negative consequences. The bill has already passed the State Assembly and has the support of the Governor, so if it passes the Senate today it will become law.
We urge you to take a minute right now and:
1. Call Senate Democratic leader John Sampson at 518-455-2788. Tell whoever answers that the Senator should be told that our community is opposed to the passage of the toeivah marriage bill.
2. Call Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos at 518-455-3171. Tell whoever answers that our community is watching closely how every Republican Senator votes on this defining issue, and that we ask Senate Minority Leader Skelos to do all in his power to assure that all Republicans stand firm against this bill.
3. Please then pass this along to as many friends as you can who are likely to make similar calls.
Together, with siyata d’Shmaya, we can help defeat this pernicious legislation.

ReplyDeleteFORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A South Florida lawyer accused of running a $1 billion Ponzi scheme pleaded not guilty to federal racketeering charges on Tuesday.
The lawyer, Scott Rothstein, 47, is charged with several counts of fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in a scheme that involved selling legal settlements. He faces up to 100 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
Mr. Rothstein, who was known for his extravagant lifestyle and his philanthropy, sat quietly and appeared calm while the charges against him were read in the federal courtroom of Magistrate Judge Robin Rosenbaum.
Judge Rosenbaum granted the prosecution’s request for pretrial detention of Mr. Rothstein, based on its assertion that he was a risk to flee. He had set up bank accounts in Morocco totaling an estimated $15 million.
Mr. Rothstein, who was taken into custody shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday, went to Morocco in late October as his business began to unravel, though he returned to South Florida last month.
Witnesses said that while Mr. Rothstein awaited his hearing Tuesday morning, he was overheard providing legal advice to others in his holding cell.
Prosecutors are charging Mr. Rothstein under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, also known as RICO.
Last month, federal authorities filed court documents seeking to seize Mr. Rothstein’s 87-foot yacht, more than a dozen properties and 20 luxury cars, including a 2009 Bugatti Veyron that sells for $1.5 million.
Mr. Rothstein’s lawyer, Marc Nurik, said his client did not provide any information to federal prosecutors about the case, despite previous reports that Mr. Rothstein was cooperating with the authorities and prosecutors by providing details of his investment business.
In the meantime, Mr. Nurik said he would provide “limited information to the government.”
Latour Lafferty, a criminal defense lawyer and a former federal prosecutor, said federal authorities were likely to try to make a deal with Mr. Rothstein for a reduced sentence if he would identify co-conspirators in the case.
“If he is cooperating with the fed, they are going to ask who helped him with the money laundering transaction,” Mr. Lafferty said. “The billion-dollar question, if you will, is who are the co-conspirators?”
So far, no one else has been charged in connection with the case.
Mr. Nurik said Mr. Rothstein was prepared to make full restitution to all of Mr. Rothstein’s “legitimate investors.”
“We made it clear from the very get-go that the legitimate investors would be paid back,” Mr. Nurik told reporters outside the federal courthouse here.
Mr. Nurik declined to elaborate on what he considered a legitimate investor. However he said that “at this point he plans on doing the right thing” by paying back money to investors he is accused of defrauding.
He also said that the “actual losses to investors, we suspect, will be less than $500 million.”
Mr. Rothstein was a major donor to local charities and to both political parties in the state. Politicians have begun returning his contributions.

New $100 Billion Safety Net for Jobless in Works

A King of Real Estate, Fallen on Harder Times
By CHRISTINE HAUGHNEY
Mr. Boymelgreen also faces criticism from residents of his earlier projects. Gus Sheha, who lives at 402 Main Street, a 20-unit building in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood, said residents have spent $250,000 on repairs since 2003 — including work to connect the building’s waste line to the city’s so that sewage would stop flowing into the street.
Mr. Sheha said that in 2005 Mr. Boymelgreen offered the building’s residents a $250,000 settlement if they agreed to sign a waiver releasing him from liability for any new problems; they turned him down.
Residents of the 173-unit Newswalk building, a former Daily News printing plant in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, that Mr. Boymelgreen finished converting into condos in 2002, have spent $5 million in repairs and legal fees to address structural problems, said Michael Rogers, a member of Newswalk’s condo board. He said that the building had so many leaks that some of its original concrete beams had started to fall apart.
“This was a really solid building,” Mr. Rogers said. “The construction is so poor. It’s construction that could have hurt people.”
Mr. Boymelgreen’s handling of criticism did not help, residents and lawyers say. While many developers have had similar problems in new buildings, Mr. Zimmerman said, Mr. Boymelgreen stood out because he fought against taking responsibility for repairs.
When Mr. Zimmerman met with Mr. Boymelgreen and his staff about the problems in three Brooklyn buildings, he said, the developer repeatedly argued, “What do they expect — a Manhattan building?”
Ms. Mirski disputed that account and said, “Codes and professional standards of workmanship are the same in any borough or locale.”

ReplyDeleteDon't negotiate on child abuse
December 1, 2009
For far too long, child sexual abuse in Lakewood's Orthodox Jewish community has been handled internally by religious leaders. Secular law enforcement has been excluded and victims have been denied any semblance of justice.
That may be about to change. Last month, the Orthodox leadership met twice with Ocean County prosecutors to develop a joint approach to dealing with the issue. The most recent meeting focused on appointing a liaison between the Prosecutor's Office and the Orthodox community.
But the liaison position is still in the talking stages. And much of the discussion to date has focused on "building bridges" between the Orthodox community and law enforcement and improving understanding of the community's "unique cultural mores."
That's all well and good. But the crime of child sexual abuse is so vile by any standard that there should be no negotiating on how the Orthodox community handles it. According to state law, the crime must be reported to secular authorities. And it must be made clear by the Prosecutor's Office that failure to report it in itself constitutes a crime, notwithstanding the so-called Cleric-Penitent Privilege. That requires rabbis to keep privileged any communication made in confidence unless both he and the person who did the confiding agree to release it or the information pertains to a future criminal act.
In September, Press Staff Writer Zach Patberg exposed how sexual abuse in the Orthodox community in Lakewood often went unreported and unpunished. It's encouraging that community leaders and the Prosecutor's Office are finally talking about the problem. Two seminars are planned this month — one to teach school officials, clergy and social workers ways to identify possible sex offenders and detect warning signs, and another to teach parents prevention skills. Those are hopeful steps.
Statistics show that child molestation is no more common in Orthodox communities than elsewhere. But when sexual abuse is covered up or seen as unworthy of reporting to secular authorities, the damage to the child and to the credibility of the faithful is incalculable.
Doesn't the voice of God thunder down in the Torah? "What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me," God says to Cain after he murdered Abel. Surely the cries of the sexually abused in the Orthodox community do so as well.

ReplyDeleteReports of the economic rebound in the United States have been greatly exaggerated, according to Harvard University Economics professor Dr. Martin Feldstein, who disputed those optimistic views in a lecture he gave at Yeshiva University (YU) on October 26th.
The current recession "has been the longest, the deepest, and the most damaging" of all recessions the United States has suffered in its history, said Dr. Feldstein. In his opinion, President Obama's $800 billion-dollar stimulus package is the source of all the trouble.
The Obama stimulus plan was inspired by the idea of the "Keynesian Multiplier"-that the economy is best stimulated by government spending. This concept became popular after the Great Depression, when the American economy enjoyed stability as a result of increased government spending on World War II.
However, the Keynesian model will not prove successful as a reliable modus operandi for all economic crises. "For the typical peak-to-trough recession, the Keynesian Multiplier doesn't work," noted Dr.Feldstein. A peak-to-trough recession is when a strong economy rapidly descends into a recession.
When the Obama administration approved its massive stimulus package-essentially Keynesian economics-it failed to take the unique circumstances of the current recession into account. In Dr. Feldstein's opinion, consumer spending was nowhere near what it should have been to encourage such a huge government stimulus. He pointed to the fall in the value of homes, the weakness of the stock market, and the overall recession as causes for consumer depression and weak spending. Nor does he foresee a 2010 rise in consumer spending parallel to the government stimulus which could close the growing fiscal defecit.
Dr. Feldstein warned his audience not to be misled by the optimistic signs of a recovering economy, which have deluded many experts, including: a fourth straight monthly increase in United States home prices; forecasts by economists that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the measure of the United States' economic performance, will increase in the next financial quarter; and a rebound in the stock market since its March 2009 lows. Two weeks after he spoke, the government released the GDP report, showing that it had increased 3.5%.
The combination of excessive government spending and weak consumer spending will result in another economic drop in 2010, predicted Dr. Feldstein. He said the government's plan to spend millions on national health care is risky;
Shmarya, who has not held a job for several years while he sits underwear-clad in his mother's basement asking for handouts from the public, has the audacity to smear Charedim as useless & lazy employee material. But even the anti-Orthodox Forward will admit to the truth sometimes:

Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in the U.S. for his 1985 spy conviction, also says he'd refuse to be exchanged for ''terrorists.''

Paterson, is effectively dead for the year and dashes the optimism of gay rights advocates, who have suffered setbacks recently in several key states.
The bill was defeated by a decisive margin of 38 to 24. The Democrats, who have a bare, one-seat majority, did not have enough votes to pass the bill without some Republican support, but not a single Republican senator voted for the measure.

ReplyDeleteSUPREME COURT LAWYER WANTED
MASSIVE CHILLUL HASHEM IN OUR MIDST
In the heart of Brooklyn( marine park), Yeshiva Rambam [Tzvi Dov Roth Academy] an Orthodox Yeshiva since 1945 has leased its beautiful Yeshiva building to a charter school.
The Mizuzos are being torn down and Sifrei Torah will be carried out. This has already occurred. With the start of this past school year, the full first floor is occupied by the charter school, where by law they are not allowed to teach a word of Torah.
Next September, the full building (2 floors) will be taken up by the charter school.
The members of the Rambam Minyan (Cong. Machzekei Torah) are determined to stop this Chillul Hashem. With so many yeshivas desperate for space, it is unthinkable that we would allow this to take place in our community.
We are advised that there are many issues that the Supreme Court can find in our favor.
We call upon all jews of conscience to help stop this abuse of a makom kadosh.
We enjoy the full support of our gedolim in this sacred mission.
We are seeking a supreme court lawyer who will spearhead this effort pro-bono, working with the help of many prestigious law firms to prevent the desecration of our holy places.
If you can help, please call or email:

ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON — Black House lawmakers are warning that they must see progress on help for the jobless in African American communities before they can be counted on to support sweeping regulations governing Wall Street.
Ten members of the House Financial Services Committee boycotted a panel vote on a key component of the regulatory overhaul. California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters said the lawmakers have regularly voted for bailouts and changes affecting financial institutions without protecting black communities and businesses.
She said "that stops today."
Among the group's demands were greater assistance for minority-owned auto dealerships, greater assistance to banks that lend in black communities and more government advertising in minority-owned media.
Dear President Obama,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.
I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.
One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.
So here goes.
I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.
I can't figure out what country you are the president of.
You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
" We're no longer a Christian nation--" America is arrogant" - (Your wife even announced to the world,"America is mean-spirited. "
Please tell her to try preaching
that nonsense to 23 generations of our war dead buried all over the globe who died for no other reason than to free a whole lot of strangersfrom tyranny and hopelessness.)
I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.
After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."
Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British? Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.
I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.
Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.
Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue. You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.
And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight? You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.
One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.
You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president.
You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.
And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.
Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes
It sounds like Toiv needs his job.
ReplyDeleteNEW YORK (Reuters) - The meltdown of the U.S. housing market is not over yet, and home prices will soon start trekking downward again as a flood of foreclosures looms, a well-known economist said on Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteMark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said in an interview with Reuters home prices will resume their decline by early next year as foreclosure sales pick up again.
"The housing crash is not over," he said.
"This lull in foreclosures sales has resulted in the price gains in the past few months," he said.
"Foreclosure sales will increase, and home prices will resume their decline by early 2010 as mortgage servicers figure out who will not qualify for a modification," he said.
Zandi said 7.5 million foreclosure sales will have taken place between 2006 and 2011. The majority of these sales, however, have not emerged yet, with 4.8 million foreclosure sales expected between 2009 and 2011.

ReplyDeleteBrooklyn, NY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Rabbi Yudi Kolko, engulfed in speculation over his private life after what Charlie Hynes described as an "accident", apologized on Wednesday for "transgressions" in a statement that apparently addressed allegations he had farted on Rabbi Gissinger who was gracious enough to take him into his Lakewood NJ shul after he fled Brooklyn.
Kolko, the world's No. 1 big mouth and a married father, said in a statement on his website that "I have not been true to my values and the behavior my family deserves." He did not directly address the allegations of flatulence.
"I have let my family down and I regret those transgressions with all of my heart," Kolko said.
The Agudah whose endorsements of YTT have helped make Kolko perhaps the world's richest rebbe, with continuing payments laundered by Yonason Tendler, said they were standing by him.
The rebbe suffered facial cuts and bruises when he ran his old Plymouth into a fire hydrant and a tree that Rabbi Belsky had reportedly just urinated on while pulling out of the driveway of his home when he learned that mispalelim of Rabbi Gissinger were on their way to confront him.
The time of the accident and Kolko's refusal to meet with police to answer questions about it triggered a storm of speculation. Media outlets have reported that Kolko has a history of farting on people at Sholom Zochers.
One of the world's most recognizable figures and a powerhouse molester with the image of a squeaky clean, hard-working assistant principal, Kolko has lucrative endorsement deals with major companies such as Artscroll, Yeshiva World News and Rubashkin.
Kolko issued the statement on his website the morning after Hamodia reported that Chaim Shtinkovitch, a 24-year-old clerk at Lakewood's NPGS supermarket, claimed to have sold Kolko 31 cans a month of Heinz or Manischewitz baked beans and said he had saved hundreds of empty cans Kolko returned for the 5 cent recycling rebate to prove it.
The report was accompanied by a recording of a voicemail message purported to be from Kolko to Shtinkovitch in which he warns him to delete his name from customer files.
His marketing deals appeared to be holding fast. Artscroll, Yeshiva World News, Rubashkin and The Right Place all said their relationships with the rebbe remained unchanged.
"Artscroll supports Kolko and his family. Our relationship remains unchanged," Nosson Scherman of Artscroll said.
Lakewood Police closed its investigation into the accident on Tuesday and issued a traffic ticket to Kolko for careless driving, saying Friday's accident was his fault but that no criminal charges would be brought.
An accident report released by Lakewood Police indicated Kolko ran off the road three times as he drove over curbs and onto medians, hitting a hedge on Rabbi Salomon's front lawn in addition to the hydrant and tree. Damages were estimated at $3,300 -- $3,000 for the hydrant, $100 for the hedge and $200 for the tree and sod.
Kolko paid his $164 traffic fine and is happy with the result of the police probe, his lawyer Jeffrey Schwartz said.

ReplyDeleteMadamoiselle Anonymous @7:33pm,
ReplyDeleteHow many times does a molester need to be accused in order to pass your truth test? Which "name droppings" are you referring to (you can list initials or dates of postings)? You may be confusing pigeon droppings with child molesters in your tired state of mind. You need to take a break and have your hubby work a bit harder instead.
Two important points that people tend to overlook when it comes to child molesters:
1)Child molesters never "retire". Unless the molester has undergone rigorous therapy and has admitted his past crimes, you can be sure he is still actively seeking new victims, even if he's currently in his 70's (NIRC neighbors of Moshe Eisemann beware).
2) If the molester is only exposed at an older age (like Baruch Lebovits), that does not mean that he began his molesting career at that age. It is more than likely that they have been molesting children since their 20's or even sooner. You can bet your last dollar that Lebovits has victimized hundreds of children dating back three or four decades (see Kolko, Yudi as point of reference).
mademoiselle over here.....i do not want to bring up previous posts- if the names have never been mentioned again, why would I rehash??? my husband said that you better shut up Steve...he said "Maybe Steve wants to send us a paycheck every week"...He didn't really say that....but hes coming over to your house to smack you around

It looks like there is something to that conspiracy about Obama really wanting his Palestinian friend Salahi at the dinner without officially inviting him.
ReplyDeleteNot only is Salahi refusing to testify on Capitol Hill, but Obama has invoked a bogus "separation of powers" claim to stop his own staff from testifying as well.
And in an interesting twist, Salahi has hired high powered law firm Dewey & LaBouef, where Hershel Wein is a partner. He is the brother of scamstress Dina Wein-Reis.

ReplyDeleteSince 2002, when he moved to New York and nationwide attention focused on the church hierarchy’s handling of abuse complaints, Cardinal Egan has faced troubling accusations about his tenure in Bridgeport: that he allowed priests facing multiple sex abuse allegations to continue working; that he did not refer complaints to criminal authorities; and that he showed little interest in meeting with accusers.

ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON — With the recent announcement of Chelsea Clinton’s engagement to Marc Mezvinsky, extended family gatherings at the high-profile Clinton household look poised to become a lot more colorful.
With her choice of a mate, Clinton, daughter of a former president and the current secretary of state, is marrying into a family that includes a former congressman convicted of fraud; another member of Congress who fell on her sword for a future in-law in a vote that ended her political career; no fewer than 10 brothers- and sisters-in-law, and a fervently anti-Zionist uncle.
It’s a family with deep roots in the world of Jewish politics. Marc’s father, Ed Mezvinsky, was an Iowa congressman who is now remembered for later running numerous fraud operations that led him to spend years in prison. His mother, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, was a one-term congresswoman from Pennsylvania, and his uncle, Norton Mezvinsky, is an academic known for his anti-Israel views.
Ed Mezvinsky grew up in Ames, Iowa. The son of a Jewish grocer who owned a store in the middle of a Catholic neighborhood, he became involved in local politics as a consumer-rights advocate and, after a failed initial attempt, got elected to Congress in 1972.
Mezvinsky’s legal troubles began in 1980 but were not revealed until two decades later, when FBI agents raided his mansion in suburban Philadelphia. Soon after, he was charged with 69 counts of fraud. Mezvinsky argued that he was driven by a mental disorder and therefore was not responsible for his actions. He even recruited his rabbi from Har Zion Temple to raise money for a professional mental assessment, but the court turned down this argument and sentenced the former congressman to 80 months in prison. He was released in 2008.
Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky also had a short-lived political career, and owes her failure to both her husband, Ed, and her future in-law, then-President Bill Clinton.
Elected to Congress in 1992, she was the deciding vote in the House that ensured the passage of Clinton’s 1993 budget, which included a tax increase for the wealthy. Her willingness to vote for the bill was used against her in the following election cycle, leading to her defeat. She later tried running for Senate, but dropped out of the race when forced restitution payments related to her husband’s fraud conviction forced the family into bankruptcy.
The couple divorced in 2007. But before then, Marjorie and Ed raised 11 children, most of them adopted from overseas. In a 1996 interview with j., a Jewish news weekly, she said that the family chose the Conservative branch of Judaism as a compromise between her Reform upbringing and her husband’s Orthodox background.
If the former president and current secretary of state do raise the issue of the Jewish state during a family gathering, they might get a mouthful from Marc Mezvinsky’s uncle. Norton Mezvinsky, a professor who has been labeled as anti-Zionist, holds strong views questioning the right of Jews to a homeland in Israel.
In his academic work and in books he authored, Mezvinsky accused Israel of deliberately creating the Palestinian refugee problem. He supports a one-state solution for the regional conflict. Mezvinsky co-authored a book about Jewish extremists in Israel with Israel Shahak, a Hebrew University chemistry professor, since deceased, who was known for his strong views against the Jewish state.
The Clintons and Mezvinskys have not yet announced their wedding arrangements, and despite intense blogosphere discussions, it is not clear whether the mixed-faith young couple will choose to have both Christian and Jewish clergy at their ceremony. Chelsea Clinton, however, was seen attending High Holy Day services with her fiancĂ© at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Conservative Judaism’s flagship academic institution.

ReplyDeleteLONDON (Reuters) - A British police probe into Bernard Madoff's ponzi scheme is shifting focus to the European firms that fed money to the New York-based fund, a person familiar with the investigation said on Tuesday.
Also subject to scrutiny has been Austria's Bank Medici, and its founder and 75-percent-shareholder Sonja Kohn, who has been forced to deny that she received money from Madoff in return for delivering client funds.
Early last month, French financier Patrick Littaye was placed under formal investigation for breaching customers' trust in the running of the Madoff feeder fund Access International he founded with Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet.
Villehuchet committed suicide last year following the discovery of the fraud.
Zwiebel is morphing into a criminal defense lawyer, at worst, a corporate lawyer, at best. I read the frumfollies post. The comparison to Yudi Kolko's lawyer is apt. Aguda has become a trade association for rabbis, who act in their own self-interest. Like other trade groups - manufacturers, tow truck operators, etc. - they oppose government regulation of their profession, be it fingerprinting, mandatory reporting, or anything else. Child protection is a low priority.

You gotta love Robin Williams......Even if he's nuts! Leave it to Robin Williams to come up with the perfect plan. What we need now is for our UN Ambassador to stand up and repeat this message.
ReplyDeleteRobin Williams' plan...(Hard to argue with this logic!)
"I see a lot of people yelling for peace but I have not heard of a plan for peace. So, here's one plan."
1) "The US will apologize to the world for our "interference" in their affairs, past & present. You know, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Noriega, Milosevic, Hussein, and the rest of those "good ' ole' boys", we will never "interfere" again.
2) We will withdraw our troops from all over the world, starting with Germany , South Korea , the Middle East, and the Philippines .. They don't want us there. We would station troops at our borders. No one allowed sneaking through holes in the fence..
3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave. We'll give them a free trip home. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them.
4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here. Asylum would never be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers.
5) No foreign "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby.
6) The US will make a strong effort to become self-sufficient energy wise. This will include developing nonpolluting sources of energy but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for awhile .
7) Offer Saudi Arabia and other oil producing countries $10 a barrel for their oil. If they don't like it, we go someplace else. They can go somewhere else to sell their production. (About a week of the wells filling up the storage sites would be enough.)
8) If there is a famine or other natural catastrophe in the world, we will not "interfere." They can pray to Allah or whomever, for seeds, rain, cement or whatever they need. Besides most of what we give them is stolen or given to the army. The people who need it most get very little, if anything.
9) Ship the UN Headquarters to an isolated island someplace. We don't need the spies and fair weather friends here. Besides, the building would make a good homeless shelter or lockup for illegal aliens.
10) All Americans must go to charm and beauty school. That way, no one can call us "Ugly Americans" any longer. The Language we speak is ENGLISH..learn it...or LEAVE...Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?
"The Statue of Liberty is no longer saying "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses." She's got a baseball bat and she's yelling, 'you want a piece of me?' "
