Abuse Took Years to Ignite Belgian Clergy Inquiry
By DOREEN CARVAJAL and STEPHEN CASTLE
Published: July 12, 2010

WESTVLETEREN, Belgium — Behind an aggressive investigation of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in Belgium that drew condemnation from the pope himself lies a stark family tragedy: the molestation, for years, of a youth by his uncle, the bishop of Bruges; the prelate’s abrupt resignation when a friend of the nephew finally threatened to make the abuse public; and now the grass-roots fury of almost 500 people complaining of abuse by priests.

The first resignation of a European bishop for abusing a child relative came unexpectedly on April 23. At 73, the Bruges bishop, Roger Vangheluwe, Belgium’s longest-serving prelate, tersely announced his retirement and acknowledged molesting “a boy in my close entourage.”

The boy, not named, was his own nephew, now in his early 40s.

The nephew’s story, pieced together through documents and interviews with him and others, shows that the nephew, acting after years of torment and strong evidence of church inaction, finally forced the bishop’s hand when the friend sent e-mail messages to all of Belgium’s bishops threatening to expose Bishop Vangheluwe.

For nearly 25 years, the nephew said, he sought to alert others that he had been molested by his uncle. Abuse started when he was 10, according to a retired priest, the Rev. Rik DevillĂ©, who said he had tried to warn Belgium’s cardinal, Godfried Danneels, about the Bruges prelate’s abuse 14 years ago, but was berated for doing so......

  2. Toady Mordy Mehlman's last "Flatbush Jewish Journal" of July 1, 2010 was fascinating.

Someone finally realized that waging war against the slew of cholov yisroel pizza establishments in Flatbush is a big no-no, so whadayaknow, they unashamedly had a massive list of the pizza stores (it's all about looking for paid ads stupid) like it was his list on authorized shteeblach and daf yomi shiurim. This was done under the guise of a full page "Flatbush Restaurant Directory" (page 37) and of course over half are pizza stores (while Flatbush is not so upscale to call its kosher lemehadrin pizza parlors "restaurants"). Strike one for the pizza store owners, who are still not advertising in this shmatte.

But not to worry, toady Mordy Mehleman has come up with a tried oldy but goody target in his "letters to the editor"... yup you guessed it, it's a biggy: "Cellphones & Tefillah" a cynical albeit true view of cell phone misuse from "Rabbi Moshe Shochet". So let's see where this leads after birthday parties were recently attacked.

And in a truly bizarre turn of events, the pizza store in Woodridge owned by the Fellers who are shpitz Chaim Berliners burned to the ground shaking the nearby summertime locale of the Chaim Berliners at Camp Morris, Merchav, Kochav et al all close to Woodridge NY in the Catskills.

Maybe the next "Flatbush Jewish Journal" should moralize how pizza stores can burn to the ground and he can start with citing the Chaim Berliners who sponsored and hosted the recently burned to ashes pizza store owned by one of their closest chaverim. Or maybe they were the ones who got their own ayin hora. Who knows, facts is always stranger than fiction.

  3. Hasid Pleads Guilty to Sodomy

A Brooklyn man from Borough Park’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community was sentenced Wednesday for sexual acts with an underage boy.

Moshe Spitzer was sentenced to two years in prison with 10 years post-release supervision by Kings County Supreme Court Justice Dineen Riviezzo, as part of a plea deal with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

Spitzer, 26, pled guilty in May to 16 counts of sodomy in the second degree, which he was charged with for engaging in deviate sexual intercourse with a person younger than 15.

Spitzer was reportedly 20 years old when he began engaging in oral and/or anal sex with his victim, then 14 years old, in various motels and apartments.

The victim reported the abuse to a Yeshiva principal about four years later and the principal encouraged him to tell his parents, leading to this prosecution.

Defense attorney George Farkas said these were statutory charges that “don’t require coercion or force.” He said he was satisfied with the plea deal sentence.

  7. Looks like people are beginning to ignore the Aguda and are rendering it irrelevant, which it deserves.

A 90% cut in services? Let's admit it: that's astonishing. In New York, of all places! Where there are plenty of Orthodox Jews. Yet the politicos are unafraid to punish the Agudah. Do you know why?

It's from Heaven: punishment for cozying up to the repugnant, odious and eternally damned Roman Catholic Church, the single greatest purveyor of anti-Semitism over the past 2000 years and the single largest source of pedophilic , child-abusing priests there is. If ever there was a sick institution in the world, this is it. Yet the Agudah made friends with this enemy in order to thwart real legislation in the NY Assembly which would have allowed for victims of child abuse to bring suit within a reformulated statute of limitations.

Aguda, to paraphrase the Psalmist, look to the mountains and ask yourselves, "From whence comes our punishment?" Your punishment comes from Hashem, Maker of Heaven and earth. It has caught up to you. Need $300G? Go the Catholic Church, your good friends.

Appeals Court Strikes Down Indecency Rule

    By BRIAN STELTER

On Tuesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York found that the policy toward fleeting expletives effectively chills speech in part “because broadcasters have no way of knowing what the F.C.C. will find offensive.”

NEW ORLEANS — Six current or former police officers were charged in connection with shootings on the Danziger Bridge in the days after Hurricane Katrina that left two dead and four wounded, federal law enforcement officials announced here on Tuesday.

The charges allege that after the shootings, police supervisors engaged in a blatant cover-up of crimes that included the strafing of unarmed civilians and the slaying of a mentally disabled man. The case is one of several that have led Mayor Mitch Landrieu to seek a Justice Department review of the city’s Police Department.

All of the officers could possibly face the death penalty.

The four police officers, along with two supervisors, Sgt. Arthur (Simcha?) Kaufman and former Sgt. Gerard Dugue, two longtime homicide detectives investigating the shootings for the Police Department, were also charged with obstruction of justice in what officials described as an elaborate and in places blatantly false cover-up story.

The police force is the subject of eight federal investigations, some of them for actions years after Katrina.

Brooklyn — Six current or former YTT officials were charged in connection with molestation in the boiler room in the days after Rabbi Scheinberg shut down dinei Torah into Kolko, federal law enforcement officials announced here on Tuesday.

The charges allege that after the abrupt adjournments, YTT supervisors engaged in a blatant cover-up of crimes that included the expulsion of boys who complained and the frask in the punim of a 6 year old. The case is one of several that have led UOJ to seek a Justice Department review of the yeshiva.

All of the officials could possibly face the death penalty in beis din shel maalah.

The four officials, along with two supervisors, Sgt. Arthur "Simcha" Kaufman and Yankel Applegrad, two longtime rebbeim "investigating" the molestation, were also charged with obstruction of justice in what authorities described as an elaborate and in places blatantly false cover-up story.

The yeshiva is the subject of eight federal investigations, some of them for actions years after Kolko's forced retirement.

    To the Editor:

Mr. Alan Jay Gerber unsuccessfully tries to establish a “thematic link” between Captain Alfred Dreyfus and Rubashkin (“The trial of the Jews”; The Kosher Bookworm; July 2, 2010). This is an instance where Mr. Gerber is crying wolf as well as using the anti-Semitism card. It is arrogant on Mr. Gerber’s part to even suggest the implication.

Captain Dreyfus was railroaded to a conviction of treason because of his religion when everyone knew he was innocent. The drive to exonerate him was justified given the anti-Semitic sentiment in France at the time.

Mr. Rubashkin, on the other hand, was convicted of numerous crimes based on a fair, open trial, with strong evidence of his guilt. Not only did he commit crimes against the state, he committed sinful crimes against his own people and his religion: Unfair labor practices, bank fraud, deception, just to name a few!

Mr. Rubashkin cannot even plead minimized guilt due to ignorance as his crimes were deliberate and calculated. It seems that he got what he deserves, when you consider the enormous damage he imposed on the image as well as the well-being of the Jewish people.

  16. I have been anti the narcissist, atheist Obama from way before the election. It surprised me that there were orthodox Jews who supported him then, and it blows me away that there are orthodox Jews that still support him. I know a few. Frankly, I can't understand why his unfavorable ratings aren't at 80% or above with the general population.
I mean there are always going to be 10 - 20 percent that are hopelessly blind or socialist, but what is everyone else's excuse.

MR. BOYMELGREEN, 59, has a charm so ingratiating and a beard so cloud-white that he could land a second gig working the Santa Claus line at Macy's. Yet beneath the charm lies a shrewd businessman who, his critics allege in court papers and in the press, is less than forthcoming with his lenders, business partners and clients, and who, either because he wants to save money or doesn't have the requisite expertise, has built projects with serious construction flaws.

"He's a really friendly, warm guy," chuckled Michael Rogers, who bought a three-bedroom condo in Newswalk in 2002, and whose condo board is now suing Mr. Boymelgreen for at least $10 million in damages for shoddy construction, including leaks that have damaged 70 of the 173 units. The board has since launched a $7 million capital campaign to correct the construction errors and built a Web site, shameonshaya.org—in English, Russian and Hebrew—featuring videos depicting their living conditions. Jazz electric bassist Richard Bona is featured in one such video, sitting in his top-floor apartment so inundated with leaks that he called it a "Jacuzzi."

Newswalk is hardly the only pebble in Mr. Boymelgreen's shoe. He publicly fell out with Mr. Leviev in the summer of 2007, prompting the dissolution of their partnership. In 2009, residents of both River Lofts and 15 Broad filed preliminary summonses against him and co-defendants in Manhattan Supreme Court, citing construction flaws. Aristone, the group that helped him finance the purchase of a prime plot of land along the High Line, at 500 West 23rd Street (also known as 10 Chelsea), sued Mr. Boymelgreen in December, accusing him of selling the land behind its back and trying to spirit away the proceeds without repaying his creditors.

In September of last year, SL Green, the city's largest commercial landlord, also sued Boymelgreen Global Holdings, alleging that it had fallen behind on its rent for its posh offices at 420 Lexington Avenue and "abandoned the premises." A judge ruled that Boymelgreen owed the landlord back rent, and that its lease would be terminated early. Mr. Boymelgreen has also been sued by, among others, TD Bank for a lapsed nearly $3 million loan; and Hersha Hospitality, the firm with which he built the boutique Nu Hotel and condominium at Smith Street and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. Hersha alleges that Mr. Boymelgreen and his co-defendants owe about $250,000 for repairs required by the shoddy installation of heating and cooling systems.

And the bank? Earlier this year, the F.D.I.C. seized LibertyPointe's assets and sold them to Valley National Bank. LibertyPointe, which had $210 million in assets, was hobbled by bad real estate loans. Mr. Boymelgreen has had to fire most of his employees.

These are just his New York City problems. Mr. Boymelgreen faces plenty of obstacles in Israel, where he is also an influential developer. In June, an Israeli bank requested that a court declare him bankrupt, citing unpaid debts.
