Mubarak Worth More Than $70 Billion - NEWSMAX.COM
Friday, 04 Feb 2011
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his family have amassed a fortune estimated at $70 billion according to analysis by Middle East experts poll by the London Guardian. And very little of that stash is kept in his own country, they say. Much of his wealth is in British and Swiss banks or tied up in real estate in London, New York, Los Angeles and along expensive tracts of the Red Sea coast.
How does a dictator get so rich? Over 30 years as president, and before that a senior military officer, allowed Mubarak has access to the oligarchs who control much of the investment capital in Egypt’s very closed, highly bureaucratic system. Investment deals have generated hundreds of millions of pounds in profits for Mubarak. Most of those gains have been taken offshore and deposited in secret bank accounts or invested in up-market homes and hotels.
According to a report last year in the Arabic newspaper Al Khabar, Mubarak has properties in Manhattan and exclusive Beverly Hills addresses on Rodeo Drive.
His sons, Gamal and Alaa, are also billionaires. A protest outside Gamal's ostentatious home at 28 Wilton Place in Belgravia, central London, highlighted the family's appetite for western trophy assets.
Amaney Jamal, a political science professor at Princeton University, told the Guardian that the estimate of $40 billion to $70 billion was comparable with the vast wealth of leaders in other Gulf countries.
"The business ventures from his military and government service accumulated to his personal wealth," she told ABC news. "There was a lot of corruption in this regime and stifling of public resources for personal gain.
"This is the pattern of other Middle Eastern dictators so their wealth will not be taken during a transition. These leaders plan on this."
Poverty: Trapped by a poor education

The unpaved, rubbish-strewn alleys of Ezbet Gabra Zarifa, a Cairo slum, are in shadow because the shacks are huddled too close together to allow the sunlight to penetrate. The area is on the eastern edge of the city near the tanneries where its people find irregular low-paid work. It is one of many pockets of extreme poverty dotting Egypt and housing the poorest 20 per cent of the population.
But Ezbet Gabra Zarifa is also the scene of a two-year pilot project, sponsored by the government, which aims to break the transfer of poverty from parents to children. The Conditional Cash Transfers scheme gives mothers in 165 selected families a monthly stipend of $35 against obligations which include keeping children in school, attending meetings on health and hygiene and, crucially, receiving guidance and a monthly visit from a social worker.
“The cash transfer helps me to pay for lessons for my daughters,” says Reda Saad, an illiterate mother of four who lives with her entire family in one room. “My husband’s job is to unload trucks carrying skins to the tanneries. He might earn E£20 a day [less than $4], but it is irregular, so he doesn’t always bring money home.”
Hania Sholkamy, the anthropologist heading the programme, says work has already started to take it to 44,000 families in villages in the governorates of Assiut and Sohag in Upper Egypt. Rural areas in the south account for more than 40 per cent of the poverty in the country.
“This is the only programme that creates capacity to deal with poverty,” she says. “It provides a social protection floor which has to come before you can even give something like micro credit.”
Roughly 20 per cent of Egyptians live below the World Bank poverty line. Another 20 per cent, who hover above it, are considered near-poor. According to the government’s latest household expenditure survey in 2008, four-fifths of Egyptian families have less than $3,000 to spend each year.
Reducing poverty remains one of the government’s biggest challenges. So far, economic growth has had only a limited impact on those at the bottom of the scale. Before the global crisis hit, growth averaging 7 per cent between 2006 and 2008 produced a reduction in poverty from 23.4 per cent to 18.9 per cent. Since then, however, one of the highest rates of food price inflation in the world has wiped out much of the gain, with the poverty rate reaching 21.6 per cent.
Expensive food has added to the pressures on Egyptians, provoking a long string of localised protests and strikes by civil servants and workers. Protesters’ demands have been focused on the issues of pay and benefits and the government has usually tried to satisfy them, preventing their anger from acquiring a more political hue.
In addition, tough policing and the regime’s low tolerance for dissent ensure that opposition movements remain weak and unable to capitalise on public disgruntlement over prices.
To forestall any potential social explosion, Egypt has for decades subsidised some food and all fuel for its citizens. This year $11.5bn is allocated to fuel and $2.3bn to subsidising food, accounting for just over 20 per cent of all public spending and costing more than health and education combined.
Ministers say they recognise that the subsidies are a blunt and wasteful weapon for combating poverty, often benefiting the rich more than the poor and diverting valuable resources from crucial sectors such as infrastructure, health and education. There are plans to phase out some subsidies and better target others, but the implementation is expected to be gradual and hampered by fears of adding to both inflation and social disgruntlement. The start date is not likely to come before presidential elections next September.
“Egypt’s poor – generation after generation – have been marginalised and deprived of those rights which have been shown to break the cycle of poverty,” says this year’s Egypt Human Development Report. “Egypt is way behind other middle-income countries, let alone emerging economies, in raising basic standards of health, nutrition and education of the most vulnerable members of its population, namely children and youth.”
The report says that low educational attainment is the big factor in transmitting poverty across generations. It describes education as “the most obstinate divide that discriminates across society between the haves and the have-nots”. It recommends an overhaul of the country’s basic educational and vocational training systems.
Indeed, paying for private lessons for children who are already attending state schools is one of the heaviest burdens on poor families.
The World Bank says that spending by families on education is 2.5 times the amount spent by the government. Even the very poor find that they have to set aside hefty chunks of their small incomes to pay for lessons, sometimes from the same teachers responsible for their children at school.
Costly education, along with pressures that force the poor to send their children to work, mean that the drop-out rate is highest among the lowest strata of society. This in turn ensures that the children of the poor end up with low-paid work and fail to emerge from the poverty trap.

ReplyDeleteThe Yated gang's "WikiLeaks" problem, 15
ReplyDeleteFor two weeks, following your threats against Jewish blogs and bloggers, you suddenly pulled the popular weekly Parsha column by Rav Moshe Sternbuch a great and noted author of seforim, posek and rosh av beis din in Yerushalyaim.
Now all of a sudden you announce that Rav Sternbuch is back, but he will have to share space with someone else, Rabbi Ahron Rapps a well-known alumnus of the Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin and a former long time eighth grade elementary school rebbe at the Chaim Berlin elementary school who now has a job as a "rosh yeshiva" of a weak outreach type yeshiva in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn.
On your latest February 4, 2011 Yated's front page you announce a "Questions and Answers: A new feature in the Yated. Rav Moshe Sternbuch, Raavad of Yerushalayim, and Rav Ahron Rapps, rosh yeshivas Bais Shimon of Manhattan Beach answer questions posed by readers."
Questions: Who came up with scheme and why now? Who thinks it's ok to "merge" the velt's gaon Rav Sternbuch with former 8th grade rebbe Ahron Rapps? Are they equals in any way? Do you think that Rav Sternbuch deserves to be squished and demeaned and ridiculed into this type of "format" where he becomes the co-equal of a verbose virtual gornisht like Rapps?
To rub this in, on page 22 Rav Sternbuch and Aharon Rapps are pasted in side-by-side under a big fat "Questions and Answers" logo as if there is some "equality" between Rav Sternbuch and Rapps which there obviously is not to anyone with an ounce of Torah sechel in their skulls.
Not just that, but Rapps still gets to have his weekly Parsha drosha near the front of the paper, while Rav Sternbuch's weekly words on Parsha are now gone.
Looks like the Chaim Berlin Yeshiva crowd is again pulling all the punches here and making you look like the puppet that you are.
Quit beating up on Rav Sternbuch and fiddling around with him by "fitting him in" in your dumb paper to build up Rapps, no one will buy it.
Besides, Ahron Rapps is the brother of Denis Rapps Esq, the same guy who backed Tropper's EJF for years and wrote about it in the Jewish Press. Both the Rapps brothers, Ahron and Denis are under the thumb of Abe the Knave Fruchthandler and his boss Aron Schechter of Chaim Berlin, and they are well adept at promoting themselves at the expense of others. Shame on you!
The tale of Gershon Kranczer, the Krancer aka Kranc-iz-er, 18
ReplyDeleteIt's almost three months that the unmasked incestuous creep "rabbi & rosh yeshiva" 58 year old Gershon Kranczer and his 21 year old son Osher Anshil managed to skip New York and run off to Israel just as the NYPD cops were on their trail for raping and molesting their female relatives.
It's actually also curious why nothing has been heard from Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes' offices about what's been doing with the other Kranczer brothers who did not skip town and were in on the shmutz as well. The minor kids were taken away by the authorities and put in foster care.
Just think about it, in Israel, during the time you've been hiding out there, for example, reporters were able to snoop and find out that the next general running to head up the Israel army was greedy and illegally bought up land next to his own so he was forced to step down, but a guy like Kranczer who did far worse, he raped his own daughters for years and inducted his sons into that disgusting aberration gets to flee from justice, hides out, obviously helped by a number of his relatives and friends who must be communicating long-distance with Kranczer's rabbis in the USA (like Aron Schechter and Lazer Ginzburg because they were his constant "da'as toireh" guides on everything), yet Kranczer & Son have disappeared into thin air and the Haredi media asks and says nothing.
The Haredi media in Israel and America does not focus on this type of stuff. Kranczer & Son qualify for the "swept under the rug benefit" a clause written into Haredi life that states that "If caught committing the worst possible sins all will be swept under the rug" so that fugitive perverts like Kranczer & Son get to hide under spacious rugs with full room and board that obviously includes daf yomi, chalav yisroel, pas yisroel, bishul yisroel, yisroel yoshon, (maybe even a bas yisroel or two) and many other well-know obnoxious self-righteous and self-glorifying chumras.
The Haredi media would much rather spend time bashing Jewish blogs and bloggers who report about slime like Kranczer. The Israeli Haredi news blogs would like to promote trips to Israel by proven fornicator Leib Tropper, another great "rabbi & rosh yeshiva" of our times (hey, he too seeks "da'as toireh" from the likes of Aron Schechter and he's buddies with Osher Kalmanowitz). Haredi rabbis and their puppet muppet media want to ban everything, they may as well ban electricity that powers the Internet and go back to camel and donkey power as they just did in Egypt when the government there got fed up with opposing points of view online.
Yup, be happy you're Haredi Kranczer because if you were a secular Israeli the media would have found you a long time ago, and if you were just an ordinary person you and your grown sons would be under arrest by now for gang raping little girls all the way into their adulthood, but heck, let's stop day dreaming, have fun under the rug, and enjoy the company there...
Tropper obviously over-dosed on the energizer bunny at some point because he can't resist imitating it. He is also obviously a total masochist.

The Catastrophe of internet gossip
Mashgichim of yeshivos across the country are working dillingently to curb the interest of the torah community in internet Loshon horoh.
The particular sites that are of major concern and are on the 'alert' list and are being targeted for their repulsive gossip, are the 'Unorthodox Jew', Daas Torah (Daniel Eidensohn) and Failed messiah.
Internet gossip is a weapon of mass destruction, say the mashgichim. Though Eidensohn claims that he Has the support of Rav Moshe Sternbuch, shlita it does not seem true.
Daas Torah has an alert Re: Loshon Horo that appears meaningless in the face of his allowing endless gossip on his site.
These bloggers are playing with fire and they are an EMBARRESMENT to the Jewish people."

ReplyDelete"Islamists Massacre Two Coptic Families in Egypt
Adar 1, 5771, 05 February 11 10:33
by Gil Ronen
(Israelnationalnews.com)
News of an Islamist massacre of two Christian Coptic families has emerged from Upper Egypt with the return of Internet connections to the country, after a one-week Internet blackout imposed by the troubled regime. The massacre, not the first in Egypt in recent weeks, took place on Sunday afternoon (January 30) at the village of Sharona near Maghagha, in Minya province, and is being reported by AINA, the Assyrian International News Agency.
According to the report, the Islamist murderers, aided by Muslim neighbors of the Copts, stormed the homes of the families, gaining access to the houses' roofs from the roofs of the families' Muslim neighbors. They killed eleven, including children, and seriously injured four more people.
Anba Agathon, Bishop of Maghagha, told Coptic activist Dr. Mona Roman in a televised interview on Al-Karma TV that the killers are neighbors of the Copts, who "seized the opportunity of the mayhem prevailing in Egypt and the absence of police protection to slaughter the Copts."
The bishop said that he had visited the injured Copts at Maghagha General Hospital and that they informed him that they recognized the main attackers, who come from the same village, Sharona.
%ad%
"The two families were staying in their homes with their doors locked when suddenly the Islamists descended on them," said Bishop Agathon, "killing eleven and leaving for dead four other family members. In addition, they looted everything that was in the two Coptic houses, including money, furniture and electrical equipment. They also looted livestock and grain."
One group of masked assailants infiltrated the home of Copt Joseph Waheeb Massoud and killed him, his wife Samah, their 15-year old daughter Christine and 8-year-old son Fady Youssef. Another group simultaneously accessed the house of Copt Saleeb Ayad Mayez and shot him dead, along with his wife Zakia, their 4-year-old son Joseph and 3-year-old daughter Justina, Saleeb's 23-year-old sister Amgad, his mother Zakia and a woman named Saniora Fahim.
"The massacre has nothing to do with the mayhem in Egypt," the bishop said, "but the murderers took advantage of the lack of police protection and thought they could commit their crime and no one would notice."
"Why have those Islamists chosen those two Coptic families and not Muslim ones to slaughter and rob? I believe it is because they know that with Copts they can literally get away with murder," accused Coptic activist Dr. Hanna Hanna."

ReplyDelete"Report: 'Iran Hanging One Person Every 12 hours'
Adar 2, 5771, 06 February 11 04:25
by Gil Ronen
(Israelnationalnews.com)
The Teheran regime has hanged 66 individuals since the end of 2010, according to France 24 International News.
Among them was a 46-year-old Iranian-born, Dutch national Sahra Bahrami, who was hung on January 29 on drug-smuggling charges.
Holland's Foreign Ministry said it was "shocked, shattered by this act by a barbaric regime," according to Agence France Presse.
Bahrami's sister dismissed the Iranian charges, which she contended were fabricated.
"She doesn't even smoke cigarettes, let alone possessing drugs. How could someone who participates in election gatherings and endangers her life, engage in such actions against her country?" she is quoted as telling the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.
"I am bewildered as to how my client's death sentence was issued while her security charges had not yet been reviewed," Bahrami’s attorney said after her death.
The Hague froze relations with Iran in the wake of the killing.
Iranian officials arrested Bahrami during anti-government protests in 2009, and held her on “security charges.” She had been visiting Iran to see her relatives.
Catherine Ashton, The European Union's representative in talks with Iran over their nuclear program, said that, "Executions are taking place at an alarming rate." Ashton made her remarks in reference to the hanging of 10 alleged drug traffickers, only two days prior to Bahrami's killing.
Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW) said on Sunday that they would begin posting news bulletins in Farsi in the wake of Bahrami's death.
Iran's Mashrek news agency on Saturday said the launch was part of “an international media campaign against Iran,” a charge that RNW Editor-in-Chief Rik Rensen strongly denied, calling it “baseless.”
Rensen said the network was “independent and works according to internationally accepted standards of journalism.”
The Farsi site, which RNW said also publishes the daily briefs and news reports on Twitter and Facebook, will run for a month-long test, according to Rensen, “at the end of which we’ll decide whether it should be continued".”

Rabbis backtracking on support for N.J. charter school
February 6, 2011
NEW YORK (JTA) -- Two Orthodox rabbis who had supported a new Hebrew-language charter school in New Jersey reportedly are now saying they have reservations.
Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO for kashrut at the Orthodox Union, and Rabbi Shmuel Goldin, first vice president of the Rabbinical Council of America, had contributed letters of support as part of the 2010 charter application for the Shalom Academy in Bergen County, near New York City.
But Genack now says that the academy, which is scheduled to open in September, could “destabilize” yeshivas and day schools in Bergen County by drawing from those religious schools’ populations
And Goldin said, “I’m always concerned, especially in the current financial climate, that people will see this as an alternative to day school, and I don’t think it’s a viable alternative.”
GOLDENBERG--Rabbi Bernard, passed away in Jerusalem on Friday, January 28. He was a founder and leading figure of Torah Umesorah, served as Rabbi in Vancouver BC, and had a distinguished career in Jewish education. ReplyDelete"Ex-General: Galant's Contact with Sharon Spoiled Him
Adar 2, 5771, 06 February 11 09:19
by Gil Ronen
(Israelnationalnews.com)
According to Major-General (res.) Yoram Yair, Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant would have become the IDF's 20th Chief of Staff if he hadn't served as Ariel Sharon's military secretary when Sharon was prime minister. Yair, who is widely known in Israel by the nickname Ya-Ya, thinks that serving in that capacity spoiled Galant and made him more susceptible to the kind of borderline corruption he has been accused of, which resulted in the government's last-minute rejection of his candidacy.
In an interview with Arutz Sheva, Yair said that the storm around Galant's appointment - which failed over accusations that he expropriated land unlawfully and lied in a court affidavit in a legal battle with neighbors regarding the land - has caused him to try and locate the root cause of the problem.
"One of the problems is the fact that major-generals at the height of their careers are appointed to serve as prime ministers' military secretaries," he explained, adding that in his opinion, a brigadier-general or an intelligence officer could do the job just as well. "The exposure of the major-generals to the pitfalls of politics, with its corruption, personal interests and ego-battles - this exposure is improper in my eyes."
"Not all those who pass [through the job of PM's military secretary] fail, but it has no place," he explained. "When I look back and ask myself what happened to Galant, one can say with confidence that if he hadn't worked in the prime minister's bureau and hadn't connected with the 'Ranch Forum' [as Sharon's inner circle was known] - he would be Chief of Staff today."
Yair explained that prime ministers sometimes appoint a general to be their secretary because they like him and want to help him advance his career. However, "the language of politicians is foreign to the military men and they lose their innocence. When a Naval Commando commander and a division commander who wants only to serve the country arrives at the prime minister's office and meets politicians who are interested only in their personal advancement, his world of concepts becomes warped. I have seen enough major-generals who changed in this capacity. They became less naive. They understood the force of power"."

ReplyDelete"Mafia 'holds compromising Silvio Berlusconi photos'
A leading Italian photographer has alleged that mafia gangsters claim to possess compromising photos of Silvio Berlusconi [Troppert] at wild “bunga bunga” sex parties.
By Nick Squires, Rome 5:51PM GMT 07 Feb 2011
Fabrizio Corona, who runs a celebrity photography agency, claimed that members of the Camorra mafia in Naples are trying to sell the alleged images to gossip magazines.
“Representatives from a big weekly magazine went to Naples to buy photos of Berlusconi [Tropper] from the underworld,” he told an Italian television programme.
He said there were nude pictures of the Italian prime minister [EJF head], but later appeared to backtrack, saying none of the images were “obscene”.
Mr Corona, who is known as the “king of the paparazzi,” also claimed that there had been a mysterious break-in at his photo agency, with thieves stealing several computer discs from his extensive picture archives, although he denied that he had any photos of Mr Berlusconi [Tropper].
Prosecutors are expected to request as early as today that the prime minister, 74, [Tropper, 60+] be sent for trial on allegations of paying for sex with an underage prostitute, an erotic dancer known as Ruby the Heart Stealer, and of abusing his office by having her released on theft charges.
Investigators have compiled hundreds of pages of evidence which they claim prove that “several” women prostituted themselves at Mr Berlusconi’s [Tropper's] parties at his villa outside Milan [Monsey]. He has denied all the claims.
Mr Corona has had legal troubles of his own and is appealing against a conviction for blackmailing celebrities with compromising photos.
But his allegations widened the investigation from Milan [Monsey] to Naples [New York], with prosecutors now seeking to interview him.
It also emerged that at least one of the women cited in the investigation has links with the southern port city, although it is not suggested she is guilty of any wrongdoing.
Eleonara de Vivo, 28, one of two twin showgirls in Mr Berlusconi’s [Tropper's] circle, lives in Naples with her businessman boyfriend, who has been investigated for suspected mafia association after allegedly receiving protection from the Camorra for his slot machine business.
Riot police and protesters clashed during a demonstration outside Mr Berlusconi’s [Tropper's] mansion near Milan [Monsey] on Sunday.
The protest started out as a peaceful anti-Berlusconi [anti-Tropper] rally but a group of around 300 people broke off and threw bottles and stones at police guarding Villa San Martino [Kol Yaakov yeshiva], injuring several officers.
President Napolitano said that the right to carry out protests should not degenerate into “inadmissible disorder and clashes provoked by extremist groups”."

ReplyDelete"Mystery over claims of naked Silvio Berlusconi photographs
Lawyers for Silvio Berlusconi [Leib Tropper] have filed legal actions over investigations that have allegedly found photographs of him naked in the company of young women.
By Nick Squires, in Venice 12:20AM GMT 07 Feb 2011
The pictures are alleged to have been taken by one or more of the showgirls who attended the Italian prime minister’s [EJF head's] so-called “bunga bunga” parties at his mansion outside Milan [Monsey].
An Italian newspaper reported that the existence of the images had prompted a bidding war between magazines [UOJ] and photo agencies [Jewish Week], with a starting price of €1 million (£840,000).
The premier’s [rosh yeshiva's] legal team said that the pictures, if they even existed, “would be fakes, manipulated pictures, photo montages”. They have nonetheless filed complaints with judicial authorities and Italy’s [Aguda's] privacy watchdog as a precaution against publication.
Investigators seized computers and mobile phones from young women whom Mr Berlusconi, 74, [Tropper, 60+] allegedly installed as a “harem” in an upmarket apartment complex in Milan [Monsey]. They are examining the devices to see whether they contain still or video images of the prime minister’s home, Villa San Martino [Kol Yaakov yeshiva].
Prosecutors in Milan [Monsey] are expected to call on Monday or Tuesday for Mr Berlusconi [Mr. Tropper] to be sent for trial on allegations of paying for sex with El-Mahroug [Shanon Orand], an alleged underage prostitute known as Ruby the Heart Stealer [Dallas Heart-throb], and of abusing his office in trying to have her released from police custody on a theft charge. The prime minister [rosh yeshiva], whose centre-Right party still has a higher approval rating than the opposition, has denied any wrongdoing.
On Saturday, Left-wing intellectuals addressed thousands of people at a rally in Milan [Monsey] to demand his resignation. “We are here to defend the honour of Italy [Israel], to remind the world that not all Italians [Jews] are the same,” Umberto Eco, the author of The Name of the Rose, told the crowd.
Mr Berlusconi’s [Mr. Tropper's] spokesman claimed the tycoon had been the victim of a biased Italian judiciary [Jewish bloggers] and “set-ups” in the press [Blogs] ever since he entered politics.
“People keep voting for us because they know that we have kept the country safe during the world’s worst economic crisis since 1929,” he said."

ReplyDelete"The show goes on for Silvio Berlusconi
Silvio Berlusconi [Leib Tropper], the Italian prime minister [EJF head], has used another one of his nine political lives after winning a crucial confidence vote with a majority of three. We look back at some of the blunders that left the colourful politician [rosh yeshiva] fighting for his political career.
By Daniel Bird 12:30PM GMT 13 Dec 2010
The Italian Premier [EJF head] faced votes in both houses of Parliament [BT yeshivas] after a dramatic fallout with his one-time close ally Gianfranco Fini [Noach Weinberg].
Berlusconi [Tropper] won with a razor-thin majority: 314 lawmakers in the 630-seat Chamber of Deputies [Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah] voted in his favour and 311 against plus two abstentions. He comfortably won a majority in the senate [EJF].
Controversy has clung to Berlusconi [Tropper] since he entered office [EJF] in 1994. During that time he has been re-elected twice, in 2001 and 2008, but has also run up a long list of political and personal blunders.
Offending heads of state [other rabbis] is a Berlusconi [Tropper] speciality with both the German Chancellor [Rav Sternbuch] and American President[UOJ] falling victim to one of his blunders.
Last year the Italian Premier [EJF head] kept Angela Merkel [Shannon Orand] waiting for a ceremonial walk across a bridge over the River Rhine because he was busy on his mobile phone [with her].
He then insulted both Barack and Michelle Obama [MOs and RZs] by calling them "sun-tanned" leading the country's only black MP to accuse Berlusconi [Tropper] of continually "damaging the image of Italy. [Israel]"
During a G20 photocall at Buckingham Palace [Agudah convention] , Berlusconi offended the Queen [Elya Svei] who was heard asking "why does he have to shout?".
Berlusconi's [Tropper's] political gaffes almost pale into insignificance in comparison to his personal blunders.
The term Bunga-Bunga swept the nation after a series of women alleged Berlusconi [Tropper] had "sex parties".
His response to the scandal became a scandal in itself, after he declared it was "better to have a passion for beautiful women than to be gay"."

Prosecutors allege that Berlusconi [Tropper] paid for sex with a minor and then used his office to cover it up and asked to search the Giuseppe Spinelli's offices, Berlusconi accountant [Tropper's rich backers], who they believe handled payments on behalf of the premier [rosh yeshiva] to the young women who attended parties at his villas [yeshivas].
Magistrates are planning to still go ahead with their probe and may indict Berlusconi [Tropper] as early as next week.
Silvio Berlusconi [Leib Tropper] suffered a setback yesterday after his government [EJF] failed to win backing for a key reform demanded by his powerful coalition [frum] ally and in barely survived a pair of confidence votes in December.
Details of Berlusconi's [Tropper's] sex life keep hitting the headlines with the Italian [Israeli] media constantly publishing accounts from women who claim to have attended one of his wild parties.
Prosecutors are also alleging that the Italian Prime Minister [EJF head] paid for sex with prostitutes including a teenager [convertee] whose stage name as a club dancer is "Ruby the Heart Stealer [Dallas heart-throb]"."
The Telegraph:

Ruby “the heart stealer,” [Shanon the rabbi's pet]] the young Moroccan [Dallasite]] who sparked an investigation into Silvio Berlusconi [Leib Tropper] for allegedly paying for sex with a minor [convertee], has announced she is about about to get married.

The 18-year-old, real name Karima El Mahroug [Sahnon Orand], told Repubblica daily [Jewish blogs] she is to marry Luca Rizzo [Jewish guy], a 41-year-old manager of a disco, in a town hall wedding in three weeks time.
Once married, the daughter of immigrants living in Sicily [Dallas] hopes to finish her high-school studies in child psychology in Genova [Dallas] and have a church [shull] wedding in June.
Milan [Monsey] judges have almost finished interviewing witnesses to investigate allegations that the Italian prime minister [EJF head] paid to have sex with the underage Miss El Mahroug [Shanon Orand] and a second minor, as well as hand-picking prostitutes for 'bunga bunga’ parties. Mr Berlusconi [Mr. Tropper] denies the allegations.
But in the interview, Ruby [Shannon] said she was not worried about the inquiry because she is only a witness.
She added that she believes Mr. Berlusconi [Mr. Tropper] was “alone and fights loneliness”."

The Internal Revenue Service announced a new initiative on Tuesday intended to lure tax evaders, but with stiffer penalties than those offered by a previous program.
The program is tougher than one created in 2009, which attracted some 15,000 Americans with hidden accounts overseas. Some 3,000 additional Americans had come forward since the October 2009 deadline of the previous program.
“The overall penalty structure for 2011 is higher, meaning that people who did not come in through the 2009 voluntary disclosure program will not be rewarded for waiting,” the I.R.S. said in a written statement.

ReplyDeleteSyracuse, NY – Manlius lawyer Michael Marmor was sentenced today to 1 1/3 to four years in state prison for stealing more than $750,000 from clients and cheating on his state taxes by failing to report the extra income.
Marmor, 54, of Blarney Stone Way, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and filing a false or fraudulent tax return.
He could have faced up to 15 years in prison.
Miller said Marmor has lost his license to practice law, his marriage of about 30 years and his home as a result of his conduct. But Miller said the Jewish Technical Vocational School in Brooklyn has offered Marmor a teaching job so he can start his life over.

ReplyDeleteThe police recently concluded an extended investigation into the alleged fraud of a local yeshiva accused of defrauding the Masa Israel project, Anglo File has learned. The police officer in charge of the case said the results of his investigation were transferred to the state attorney’s office due to a “strong suspicion” of illegal activity by yeshiva administrators.
The yeshiva received $410,000 in stipends from Masa for students who signed up for the program but apparently did not attend the institution. The yeshiva, Tomchei Tmimim in Migdal Ha’emek − which belongs to the global educational network of the Chabad movement − denies any wrongdoing.
Referring to the yeshiva’s Hebrew name − which means supporters of the pure (or innocent) in English − the fraud unit director of the police’s Northern branch, Superintendent Aharon Gal-Or, said there was little “innocence” [tmimut] on behalf of the yeshiva regarding this case.

A plan to nail New York drivers who rip off insurance companies by illegally registering their cars out of state to save money -- costing taxpayers millions in lost revenue each year -- would offer up to a $5,000 reward to those who point out the fraudsters.
"This is no little white lie," said state Sen. Diane Savino, who co-authored the legislation. "If you live here but register your car out-of-state, you're not only committing fraud, you're also making things more expensive for your neighbors."
Other provisions of the bill would: Expand felony of forgery laws on the books to include certificates of insurance and identification cards; expand the definition of insurance fraud to include any false document used to secure insurance coverage; grant law enforcement access to a driver's street that has been provided to the Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a license, and give the state Superintendent of Insurance expanded authority to investigate auto evasion fraud.

Federal prosecutors filed a last-minute motion Tuesday to keep the former head of the federal whistle-blower protection office out of jail and save their plea deal. A judge ruled last week that Scott Bloch must serve at least one month in prison in connection to his plea of guilty last year for trying to undermine a congressional investigation against him.
ReplyDeleteThe criminal contempt charge to which Bloch pled reads that is "punishable by a fine ... and imprisonment in a common jail for not less than one month nor more than twelve months." In a battle of semantics, Bloch and his attorney argued that "punishable" does not necessarily mean that the prison sentence is mandatory.
Bloch wanted the word defined as "capable of being punished," which he claimed implied that the term is discretionary and that "only the term 'shall be punished' should be deemed mandatory."

ReplyDeleteThe NHL is investigating what could be an explosive lawsuit filed by minor league player Jason Bailey against the Anaheim Ducks, alleging he was subject to systemic and repeated abuse while in the Ducks' farm system because he is Jewish.
The suit, filed Jan. 25 in California, refers to a period of time when Bailey, the 63rd overall pick in the 2005 draft, was playing with the ECHL Bakersfield Condors, then a farm team of the Ducks.
Among the allegations in documents obtained by ESPN.com, Bakersfield coach Martin Raymond and assistant coach Mark Pederson repeatedly made racial slurs referring to Bailey's Jewish faith. Raymond, who remains the team's head coach according to the Condor's website, allegedly told Bailey that Raymond's ex-wife was Jewish "and that she was a 'bitch' for taking all of his money."
When the team was discussing who should look after monies collected for a team party, it is alleged Bailey's name came up and Pederson remarked, "Well, I don't know if we can trust him with the money. He's Jewish."
Other allegations include frequent references made by Raymond about Jewish people and how they only care about money "and who's who."
During a road trip, Raymond allegedly turned to Bailey after seeing a CNN report on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and suggested, "Maybe you should go over there and fight in the war."
Raymond also allegedly told Bailey he would never want his son to be raised Jewish or to wear a Yarmulke.
Among the most damning pieces of the lawsuit are letters of apology from both coaches for their comments to Bailey.
"That's why they're trapped," Bailey's lawyer, Keith Fink, said of the defendants in the case that include the Condors and Ducks hockey clubs, and Raymond and Pederson.

WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve chairman, Ben S. Bernanke, faced harsh questions Wednesday about the central bank’s efforts to stimulate the economy, in his first hearing before the new Republican majority in the House.
ReplyDelete“My concern is that the costs of the Fed’s current monetary policy — the money creation and massive balance sheet expansion — will come to outweigh the perceived short-term benefits,” Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, the new chairman of the House Budget Committee, said in his opening remarks.
And he expressed concern that central bank’s plan to buy $600 billion in Treasury securities in order to spur the recovery was devaluing the dollar. “There is nothing more insidious that a country can do to its citizens than debase its currency,” he said.
Mr. Bernanke’s statement was nearly identical to a speech he gave last week at the National Press Club, in which he played down the significance of rising food prices and defended the Fed’s plan to buy Treasury securities.

ReplyDeleteSuit Says Bear Stearns Pocketed Bond Money
By LOUISE STORY
Banks have been fighting with disgruntled bond investors and insurers for months, arguing that they do not need to buy back soured mortgages they placed inside securities before the financial crisis.
Now, it turns out, some of those banks may have secretly collected partial payments on those same mortgages several years ago and pocketed that money.
At least that is a theory being pursued by plaintiffs’ lawyers in some of the largest mortgage bond lawsuits, in which banks are accused of filling mortgage bonds with loans that did not belong there.
The theory surfaced in a recently unsealed lawsuit against a mortgage unit at Bear Stearns, the failed investment bank that is now part of JPMorgan Chase.
In the suit, the Ambac Assurance Corporation, which insured some mortgage bonds created by Bear Stearns, contends that the bank was partly compensated by loan originators for mortgages that became delinquent shortly after they were packaged into securities. Bear Stearns’s mortgage desk kept the payments, according to the suit, rather than apply them to the bonds that contained the delinquent loans.
Interviews with more than a dozen former workers at several big banks, including Lehman Brothers and Deutsche Bank, suggest that several banks received millions of dollars at a time in such payments, known as early-payment-default settlements.
