...."Jeffs is charged with sexually assaulting two underage girls. If convicted, he could receive life in prison. He has claimed that, as the head of his church, he has the constitutional right to practice his own religion, which includes polygamy. The mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon church, repudiated polygamy more than a century ago.

Until 10:25 a.m. Friday, Mr. Jeffs had been spectator at his own trial. Before the trial had begun, he had fired his team of attorneys, saying they could not present "a pure defense."

Then, in opening statements, he said nothing as prosecutors vowed to provide evidence that he raped a 12-year-old girl and impregnated a 15 year old.

His silence had extended to the point that District Judge Barbara Walther eventually implored: "You've sat here now for an hour and not said a word," suggesting that further silence could yield "a very bad result."

Jeffs broke that silence Friday when prosecutors introduced as evidence a list of his wives and children they said lived at Jeffs's Yearning for Zion Ranch in 2004.

But Friday, he was enflamed.

"You are now touching that which is sacred," Jeffs said in objecting to the prosecution's list.

"This must cease," he said.

"If we do not live these laws we are damned here and hereafter," Jeffs said, reading from a written statement. "We believe in a marriage system of eternity called celestial marriage, wherein celestial means heavenly authorized, not to be intervened by government intervention."

"I, the Lord God of heaven, call upon the court to cease this prosecution against my pure, holy way," he continued, saying God would strike the prosecutors with sickness and death.

When the statement was finished, he concluded, "Amen."

I think Lesher's attack on all the Shomrim groups goes too far. From what I understand, BP & Willy cover up for molesters while Flatbush and most recently also Crown Hts do not.

  5. "I Have a Chush" Kornfeld11:30 AM, August 01, 2011

    UOJ,

Please don't put up these things about other rabbis until you post about Elimelech Kornfeld of RBSA.

He publicly warned parents against cooperating with Magen, the local organization that advocates protection of children.

Kornfeld himself has been involved in cover up and obstruction of justice in molestation cases.

The time has come to post his picture and inform everyone how dangerous he is.

If you need a picture let me know and I'll send you one.

This man is a danger to thousands of children living in Israel.

  6. ANOTHER UOJ ALERT TO THE FAMILIES IN RBSA!

I've looked into many of the allegations of child abuse in your community. There are monsters posing as rebbes --- that are an imminent danger to your children. Families have left and are leaving because of Malinowitz and Kornfeld! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR CHILD BECOMES A VICTIM!

Elimelech Kornfeld is a vile scoundrel covering up for them.

My advice: GET RID OF KORNFELD! - SUPPORT MAGEN!

  7. Joe Biden channels Agudah

Calling Tea Party adherents terrorists, Joe Biden shows inherent ignorance and direspect for dissent and opinions contrary to the administrations.

    Agudah's position -

We candidly agree with the Vice President. Daas Government is like Daas Torah, infalliable. There is no room in either for dissent.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, et al position.

When in the course of human events, the natural growth of man from the description in sefer Yetzirah, is corrupted, we have the agony of ignorance.

    Sefer Yetzirah's position.

Man is created from a bone near his asshole - in some cases the creation process stops and is never completed.

SPRING VALLEY — A village justice wants mediation for 2 Orthodox Jewish men & a black family following a religious group's response to a water balloon throwing incident.

As the criminal case moves forward, Justice Alan Simon set up a panel for the 2 sides to air differences & make peace.

"We have misunderstandings," Simon said. "They don't really know each other."

District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said he's all for getting different ethnic groups talking, but the justice can't set up mediation without all sides involved.

"Without the victims there's no mediation," Zugibe said. "At the current time the matter will proceed in court."

Sherry Scott, the Spring Valley village clerk, declined to get involved in mediation. Prosecutor Eric Holzer told Simon he would not get involved.

Because of Scott's involvement, Simon said the prosecution would take place outside Spring Valley. Scott's daughter hit a van with a water balloon just before 11 p.m. June 15. The driver called Chaverim, a Jewish group that responds to emergencies.

Up to 50 Chaverim members descended on a Fletcher Rd apartment building. Before Spring Valley police arrived, the van driver chased the 11-year-old girl, who was protected by a 17-year-old male relative, police said.

Chaverim members confronted the girl, her brother & Scott, and punches were thrown, police said.
Scott said she was bruised when one of the men knocked her against the wall. She said the men wouldn't let her child & relative into the building & pushed & hit her grandson.

Morris Jacobowitz, 32, of Spring Valley was arrested on 2nd degree reckless endangerment, and Solomon Simkowitz of Wesley Hills on charges of 2nd degree unlawful imprisonment & 2nd degree harassment.

When Chaverim & religious leaders complained the Scott family & others were the aggressors, police interviewed those who responded as well as the family.

Jacobowitz & Simkowitz pleaded not guilty through their lawyer, Kenneth Gribetz.

Issues also were raised whether Gribetz could represent both men without a conflict of interest. The issue could arise if either man testifies, possibly against the other's interest. Gribetz said no conflict existed.

The incident highlighted growing tensions between black & Jewish Hasidic communities, partly as a result of public school issues.

The Rockland Human Rights Commission is conducting separate mediation with representatives of both communities. County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef said he requested the agency's intervention because of tensions.

Simon appointed a panel to get talks going. The panelists — a businessman, Spring Valley NAACP President Willie Trotman & a pastor — met with the defendants & Gribetz.

Wilbur Aldridge, regional leader for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said he didn't understand Simon's mediation in the middle of a criminal case.

Rabbi Yosef Feldman who said not to report molesters is the son of Pinchos Feldman, the shvogger of Gutnick who fought like cats & dogs and was in secular court with him for years.

    http://www.abc.net.au/am/content/2003/s915851.htm

Feldman owned Gutnick $15 million. Feldman went to the Tel Aviv beis din to get out of repaying. Gutnick asked a secular court to stop the beis din.

    http://www.crownheights.info/index.php?itemid=24262

The Lubav yeshiva that is full of molesters is one of the earliest Meshichist loony bins. Gutnick was also fighting to stop them from displaying a Yechee sign. It is odd that alter Lubavitchers like the Rav Groner who was niftar are Meshichist. It's usually the younger generation that is swept up in the craziness.

In what police and social workers are calling the worst case of domestic violence in decades, three men and six women from a polygamous Breslov Hasidic cult, well-known for dancing in the streets behind the Rabbi Nahman van in Jerusalem, were arrested in Tiberias over a week ago. Three men were detained, and six women, along with the cult’s fifteen children, were placed in different shelters across the country, police announced on Tuesday morning.

Police would not identify the family. The arrest was carried out in cooperation with the Social Services Ministry and the Jerusalem municipality. The cult had been in existence for more than ten years, though only in the past two years the attacks had increased in frequency and severity.

Police and social workers familiar with the case described severe physical, emotional, and sexual violence, that landed several of the children in the hospital, some multiple times. The family moved often and children were taken to different hospitals to prevent raising questions of abuse. The leader of the cult was not legally married to the six women, but had sexual relations with all of them. The additional two men arrested were the leader’s assistant and another man ostensibly chosen to continue the cult.

“It was very clear that they were in a framework that controlled every aspect of their lives, including their thoughts,” said Menahem Vagshel, deputy director of the Social Services Ministry. He said that every day each woman would have a “confession” or “judgment” sessions with the head of the cult, where they would be required to share all of their thoughts, including towards the family and towards him. If they had any negative thoughts, they were forced to undergo cruel sexual or physical punishments.

The leader of the cult was under investigation a year and a half ago, when one of the daughters complained to social services about sexual abuse. When she refused to testify, the state attorney was forced to close the case for lack of evidence.

The breakthrough came after the cult head’s seventh wife broke away from the family, after a year and a half of living with them. Six months later, she urged social services to investigate abuse in the family. An undercover investigation began on July 4.

When police arrived at the apartment to arrest the leaders, they found stun guns, electric cables, and wooden rods, in addition to the personal journals of many of the women, which will be used to build a case against the leaders of the cult. The three men are expected to be indicted on Wednesday on multiple counts of sexual abuse and child abuse.

Rabbi Avi Shafran, a spokesman for Agudath Israel, said that a rabbinic degree did not, in and of itself, qualify a rabbi to deal with matters of abuse.

But he added: “Rabbis who have ministered to families for many years are very likely to have dealt with such issues, and those who have, and who have consulted with mental health professionals and other experts, are most qualified to responsibly handle questions about what constitutes ‘reasonable suspicion’ in such matters.”

He continued: “There are rabbis in most larger Orthodox Jewish communities who well fit that bill, and even in communities where there might not be, such an authority is no farther away than a telephone or computer.”
