Penn State, Second Mile Not the First to be Embroiled in a Sex Abuse Scandal
By Perry Chiaramonte
Published November 15, 2011

Allegations that former Penn State defensive football coach Jerry Sandusky sexually molested young boys and that university administrators did not adequately report the accusations against him have tarnished the once-shiny image of both Sandusky’s Second Mile charity and the university’s stellar Nittany Lions athletics program.

But it’s hardly the first time a charity group or sports organization has dealt with charges of sexual molestation.

“As much as the Penn State situation has shocked the nation, the more shocking fact is that the veil of secrecy is more commonplace than we probably realize,” said Justin Leto, a Miami-based civil trial attorney who has handled numerous sex abuse cases.

This month, Lon Harvey Kennard Sr., co-founder of the Utah-based nonprofit group Village of Hope, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to 43 counts of sex abuse and exploitation.

Kennard, who started Village of Hope to help women and children in Third World villages, had been charged with molesting six Ethiopian children he had adopted. He was arrested last year after one of the children told police that she and one of her sisters had been abused between 1995 and 2002.

Another sexual predator is Douglas Perlitz, a Colorado man who founded a school for homeless children in Haiti. He was sent to prison last year when he was found guilty of abusing eight students.

Perlitz admitted to investigators that he committed illicit sexual conduct with students who attended his Project Pierre Toussaint School for Homeless Children in Cap-Haitien.

During Perlitz's trial, prosecutors said, he gave the children money, food, clothing and electronics equipment in an attempt to buy their silence, and that he threatened to take it all away and have them expelled if they told anyone what happened. Six of his victims were flown to Connecticut to testify at his trial in federal court.

The scandal led to the collapse of the school, forcing many of the students back into homelessness and despair on the streets of Haiti. Perlitz is serving a 20-year sentence.

Like the charities, Penn State’s football team is not the first sports program to be accused of covering up allegations of sexual abuse.

The Boston Red Sox faced a similar scandal in the early '70s and successfully kept the allegations from going public until 1991.

The team had a clubhouse manager, Donald Fitzpatrick, who during his 30 years with the team solicited sex from young boys he would hire to work during spring training.

Fitzpatrick’s accusers said it was common knowledge among the Red Sox that it was dangerous to have children around him, and one of his victims said players Jim Rice and Sammy Stewart warned the kids to steer clear of him.

In 1971, one of Fitzpatrick’s victims went to Red Sox management and blew the whistle on him, accusing him of being sexually inappropriate with many of the children in the clubhouse and at a hotel where the team stayed during spring training in Florida.

The Sox did not report the claims to authorities, and they fired the victims who came forward. Fitzpatrick suffered no penalties and was allowed to keep his job.

The claims did not resurface until 1991, when one of his accusers – sitting in the crowd at a nationally televised game between the Red Sox and Angels -- held up a sign that said, “Don Fitzgerald sexually abused me.” The Sox eventually paid the man a $100,000 settlement. In 2002, Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual battery on a child. In 2003, the team settled a $3.15 million lawsuit with seven victims in Florida.

“The thing these organizations all neglect to recognize is that eventually the truth will come out,” Leto said. “And when it does, the years they have spent protecting the predators and themselves will end in far greater consequences than if they would have done what is right from the start.

“The interest of the employer should never supersede the moral, ethical and legal obligation to ensure that no child is subject to this type of unthinkable abuse.”

Elly Kleinman, the American Aguda's new "ubber-supporter" who will be running the next daf yofi (oops daf yomi) hoopla that has nothing to do with Torah and everything to do with American style self-promotion via sports stadiums glitz 'n glamor, is also the guy who was sued for cutting out the prostates of retarded men who didn't need it so that he could get the $$$$ for it, and who has swindled hundreds of millions out of Medicaid and Medicare having to settle lots of big cases brought in courts against him.

This guy Kleinman sprinkles his ill-gotten gains over any cause in the Torah world that can improve his own image. He needs it for a few reasons because his one and only son, Yossi stole and ran off with another guy's (Saftlas) wife and then made the life of Yossi's wife a misery to get a get so that he could keep the kids as he cavorted with his Sotah from the aptly named Kariti family married to a Saftlas whose life was ruined by the scandal. But the Kleinman's brushed it off, with all the money they sprinkle around like rotten urine:

"Breaking News: R’ Leib Tropper Resigns as Rosh Yeshiva of Kol Yaakov

    Wednesday February 3, 2010

Just in: R’ Leib Tropper has resigned as the rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Kol Yaakov on Maple Avenue in Monsey, NY. The move comes a month and a half after he resigned from his position at the Eternal Jewish Family (EJF) “to pursue a variety of other interests.” Efforts to contact him for comment regarding his most recent resignation have proved fruitless.

Kol Yaakov Torah Center was founded in 1981 by R’ Tropper after he left Yeshiva Ohr Somayach in Monsey. He worked at

    FORWARD:

"Advocate of Strict Conversions in Sexual Scandal

    By Josh Nathan-Kazis
    Published December 23, 2009, issue of January 01, 2010.

A key proponent of the successful campaign for stricter conversions in Israel and around the world has resigned from a senior post, and has not denied rumors of a conversion scandal of his own.

Rabbi Leib Tropper, a founder of the hard-line conversion group Eternal Jewish Family (EJF), announced that he had stepped down as its leader when allegations surfaced in news outlets that he had engaged in sexual misconduct with a woman while guiding her conversion. Tropper was among those responsible for major policy changes by the Israeli rabbinate that sparked a worldwide tightening of conversion regulations.

In a statement issued December 23 to the Forward, Tropper’s representatives said he “wishes to express his regret for the turmoil caused by his departure… and for what has appeared to be conduct not within our significant laws of modesty.”

“He was a big player in trying to make the conversion standards more extreme,” said Mark Angel, the modern Orthodox rabbi who founded the Institute for Jewish Ideas and Ideals, which opposed Tropper’s reforms.

Now, in an ironic twist, the rabbi whose organization questioned the legitimacy of conversions performed by others has had his own conversions called into question. On December 21, the Rabbinical Council of America, the mostly Modern Orthodox rabbinic association, issued a statement in response to the scandal. “What we have heard, if true, violates the fundamental elements of all that Judaism holds sacred,” the statement read. EJF has been involved in conversions since its founding, in 2005.

The allegations of sexual misconduct against Tropper, reported first on the Web site FailedMessiah.com, cite leaked, unauthenticated audio and video recordings in which Tropper apparently discusses orchestrating sexual encounters between an unidentified woman undergoing a conversion and other men. These allegations were also reported in the New York Post.

The revelations may have undermined Tropper’s hard-line stance. “He was the ultimate de-legitimizer,” said Rabbi Seth Farber, who directs ITIM, an information and advocacy center for Jewish life in Israel. “He claimed he had all the solutions, he had all of the ultra-Orthodox leadership, and anything that wasn’t under his rule wasn’t legitimate at all.”

Tropper is known for particularly strict positions on who can perform and receive conversions. According to a blog post by Rabbi Gil Student, a Modern Orthodox rabbi, Tropper told him that he follows the authorities who believe that rabbis who think the world is more than 6000 years old should not be allowed to preside over conversions. And Jewcy.com reported that in 2006, Tropper reversed a conversion he had overseen after learning that the woman wore pants and not dresses, which is considered immodest in ultra-Orthodox circles."

"Advocate of Strict Conversions in Sexual Scandal

Officials from EJF could not be reached for comment.

Tropper has worked to extend his rigid outlook on conversions to rabbinical courts around the world. According to sources contacted by the Forward, he is among those responsible for a major shift in conversion policy that occurred in 2007, when moves by the Israeli rabbinate caused the RCA to introduce new, stricter conversion standards.

One source who is familiar with the matter and asked not to be identified called Tropper a “power broker.” According to Farber, Tropper’s charisma and funding allowed him to garner support from major figures in the ultra-Orthodox world. Farber said that Tropper and an Israeli ally, Rabbi Nachum Eisenstein, had the ear of Shlomo Amar, Israel’s Sephardic chief rabbi, in 2005 and 2006, years in which Amar effected policy changes that overturned the status quo of Orthodox conversion in the United States.

“Amar was very impressed with the rabbis whom [Tropper and Eisenstein] surrounded themselves with,” Farber said. Amar attended conferences in the United States, organized by EJF. “He became very, very suspicious of the Modern Orthodox rabbinate in the United States. And that, from a historical perspective, was a disaster,” Farber said.

In 2006, Amar determined that the Chief Rabbinate of Israel would not consider conversions performed by the RCA to be legitimate. The potential implications of the decision were drastic, as the rabbinate in Israel controls such vital areas as marriage, divorce and eligibility for immigration. In response, the RCA restructured the process by which it approved conversions, limiting the ability of individual rabbis to convene religious courts in favor of a more centralized system. Conversions are now performed only by a small number of RCA rabbis.

Meanwhile, in the United States, EJF worked to coordinate and centralize the religious courts that adhered to its stricter standards.

“Until now, every single beis din [religious court] was, to a large extent, independent. There was no interfacing, there were no standards, there was no discussion,” said Yehoshua Wender, who sits on the Bais Din of Houston and is the rabbi of Young Israel of Houston. Through EJF, Wender said that his religious court has been brought into contact with other similarly observant religious courts via annual conferences. EJF lists 19 religious courts in the United States and around the world that it says adhere to its “universally accepted standards” of conversion.

FailedMessiah.com also reported that Tropper used his control over the unidentified woman’s conversion process as leverage to force her to engage in sexual activities. But Wender, who said that the woman was to have been converted at his beit din, said that Tropper would have had no say over whether the woman’s conversion would have been accepted."

  5. Facebook Ayatolas get some well deserved mud in the eye 14:03 AM, November 16, 2011

Facebook refuses to provide anonymity to those users who request it (a basic right that's granted to virtually all those who request it and has been defended in courts!), they should therefore not complain now that that the powerful cyber-group "Anonymous" has targeted it!

    TomsGuide.com:

"Anonymous Blamed for Porn Flood Drowning Facebook

    November 16, 2011 - By Kevin Parrish - Source : Sophos

Now is a good time to jump over to Google+ while Anonymous begins to take control of Facebook.

Has offensive material appeared in your Facebook news feed over the last twenty-four hours? If so, you're not alone, as security firm Sophos has confirmed the sudden-yet-offensive problem.

According to reports made by Facebook users, news feed content and personal messages now include explicit hardcore porn images, Photoshopped photos of celebrities in sexual situations, pictures of extreme violence and a photograph of an abused dog. That said, workers may need to get their Facebook fill at home rather than on the job until the porn flood has been contained... unless you work within the porn industry, that is.

News of the problem began to surface as Facebook users took to Twitter to vent their anger. The complaints universally point out that porn-posters are unaware that their accounts have been compromised to publish the offensive material. Even more, they can't even see the images posted on their wall or in their message box after logging on.

"One of my friend's accounts was compromised and messages containing a video were sent," reads one Twitter post. "My daughter's boyfriend had something posted on his wall that he couldn't see on his computer, but my daughter could see on his wall from hers."

"I had to deactivate my FB after all that Jesus porn... I just can't risk my position in heaven looking like I posted that mess," another user Tweeted. That's right, porn related to Jesus is making the rounds across Facebook as well."

"Anonymous Blamed for Porn Flood Drowning Facebook

"I have 5000 friends," said actress and director Courtney Zito. "My feed is littered with porn. I can't even check my news feed with anyone around because of it. Just saw one with a guy who had his skull bashed in and his brains on the street. Another one was the devil... Besides the countless naked girls. I'm about ready to deactivate."

Currently Sophos isn't sure how the offending content has been spread across Facebook, but assumes that it stems from a successful dose of spam.

"Whether users are falling for a clickjacking scheme, are being tagged in content without their knowledge, have poorly chosen privacy settings, have been tricked into installing malicious code, or have fallen victim to another vulnerability inside Facebook itself," Sophos reports. "What's clear, however, is that mischief-makers are upsetting many Facebook users and making the social networking site far from a family-friendly place."

But numerous reports are now pointing to a threat made by Anonymous, a threat to attack Facebook using a powerful "Guy Fawkes virus" they developed. According to the hacktivist group, it's a highly sophisticated work that takes control of your Facebook account and spreads to your friends' accounts without you actually being logged in.

"After the worm gets under control, Anonymous will use this to its advantage against corruption, and as an alternative attack towards groups who take on Anonymous," the group states in the video seen below, blatantly admitting to the Facebook attack back on Thursday. "We are Anonymous. We are a legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."

As of this writing, Facebook has not issued an official statement.

  7. Buffett bets on IBM while IBM bets on human misery and corrupt get rich quick schemes like FORECLOSURES4:36 AM, November 16, 2011

Journalists and investors are scratching their heads why Warren Buffett would suddenly drop his lack of interest in IT and suddenly buy up shares in IBM.

    The CS Monitor asks:

"Why is Warren Buffet loading up on IBM stock?

Warren Buffet has avoided technology stocks – until now. Why is Warren Buffet spending $10.7 billion on IBM stock?

By Ben Berkowitz, Reuters / November 14, 2011

[Photo caption: Investor and philanthropist Warren Buffet receives the Medal of Freedom from U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House in Washington February 2011.]

...Buffett said IBM did not know that he was building a stake and that the company was finding out about his investment for the first time as he disclosed it on television.

An IBM spokesman declined to comment.

Buffett said he has always looked at IBM's annual report -- his preferred method of identifying companies to invest in -- but this year "I read it through a different lens."

He said follow-on conversations with various technology executives throughout the Berkshire conglomerate convinced him to start building the stake.

    LARGEST HOLDER

Berkshire is due to make a quarterly report of its equity holdings Monday night. Though it started buying IBM shares in March, Buffett's comments suggested Berkshire did not cross reporting thresholds on the investment until the third quarter, which let him keep the stake secret until Monday.

According to Thomson Reuters data, a 5.5 percent position in IBM would tie Buffett with State Street Global Advisors for the largest stake in the company.

IBM shares rose nearly 1 percent in premarket trading..."

But what most do not realize is that IBM has shifted AWAY from being just an IT company and is looking foe other ways to make easy big money. This trend was evident in 2002 already when IBM bought a huge chuck of Price Waterhouse Cooper: "IBM grabs consulting giant for $3.5 billion...IBM, the biggest provider of services to help companies install and run computer systems, has agreed to buy PricewaterhouseCoopers' consulting arm for an estimated $3.5 billion...IBM Global Services had $35 billion in revenue in 2001, but the acquisition will bolster an area of comparative weakness, planning and installing high-end software for corporate accounting, dealing with customers, and managing corporate supplies, said Forrester Research senior analyst Christine Ferrusi Ross.

IBM will pay for the acquisition with $2.7 billion in cash from reserves and current cash flow, supplemented with a $400 million convertible note and $400 million in stock...Under the acquisition terms, PwC Consulting will become a part of IBM Global Service's Business Innovation Services unit...IBM has been hurt by the recession and reduced spending on information technology, but its Global Services unit has helped reduce the pain by providing somewhat stable revenue..."

So as far as IBM is concerned it's all about other ways to support their sinking bottom line.

Then to top it all off they cynically set up an artificial "MORTGAGE SERVICING COMPANY" known as "LBPS" now renamed "SETERUS, Inc" and have become the servicers of bankrupt FANNIE MAE's mortgage's -- all care of the Obama Administration (note how Buffett and Obama cuddle each other lately) as IBM now turn their technological and accounting firepower on distressed USA homeowners as if they were a branch of the IRS or worse throwing masses of citizens out on the streets and into homeless shelters!

  8. Buffet penetrates IBM while IBM penetrates Fannie Mae as an attack on the screwed USA middle class in Foreclosure war as when IBM helped the Nazis run the Holocaust5:09 AM, November 16, 2011

It's no wonder Buffett has read the IBM tea leaves and figured out, or was given this on a silver platter by Obama people, now that IBM (calling itself "LBPS-Seterus") runs the FORECLOSURE business on behalf of the corrupt and bankrupt Fannie Mae that is now squeezing homeowners by using fancy IBM data techniques to "compile" documents AGAINST the struggling USA middle class.

It's quite simple really if you follow this: Fannie Mae (that's bankrupt now controlled by the US) owns most US mortgages (now mostly underwater)--> Fannie Mae contracts with IBM's new fangled mortgage service division LBPS-Seterus to run and kick out tens of millions of distressed homeowners who can't cough up because of the deep Depression (Buffet wants to get real estate moving again, he hates that housing woes is costing his companies) --> Warren Buffett suddenly steps in and buys up a huge chunk of IBM itself putting himself in a controlling position of IBM and all its branches --> Therefore Warren Buffet now has a huge stake in the deal that IBM cut with the Obama people to help Fannie Mae in its dirty work of squeezing and disembowling distressed homeowners --> Fannie Mae is broke yet it finds hundreds of millions of US largesse to pay IBM's LBPS-Seterus to hunt and foreclose on US citizens --> IBM has also bought up previously unrelated accounting and IT companies to help it in its task of INFORMATION GATHERING AND COLLATION (think MERS problems, robo-signing accusations, securitization of mortgages resulting in no known ownership of mortgages) needs to be sorted out and an important task in finally "legally" evicting millions of people in the USA from their homes --> Therefore not only does Buffett benefit from IBM-LBPS-Seterus huge contracts with Fannie Mae via Obama to get paid for their tech/accounting/legal work --> But Buffet also gets closer to becoming the largest de facto behemoth real estate manager/owner in America because Fannie Mae that's owned by the US government in effect owns most US mortgages and Warren Buffet is now on his way on being your "building 'super'" and then some (just like Yosef bought up the real estate in mitzrayim when the citizenry was distressed just that Warren Buffett ain't no Yosef HaTzadik and IBM has proven that in the Holocaust coldly and cruelly helped the Nazis track and hunt down the Jews.

Not a pretty precedent or situation and nothing to be "proud of" or "admire" about the calculating Mr. Buffett!

Guidestar finally got around to posting VHQ's 2009 tax return that contains several points of interest.

Chaim Schwartz seems to have been promoted from Executive Drecktor to Executive VP. The Vaad tells the IRS that he works 50 hours a week. How much of that is kashrus work and how much is blogging and acting as Chief Detective and Executioner of Queens Vaad critics, real and just suspected?

Almost $28k for phone bills? That's a lot of yapping on your cells (and blogging on your Blackberry)

Almost $17k for car expenses (plus almost $8k for other travel)? We didn't realize it was that far from 124th St to the non-Vaad certified Rosenblum's grocery.

$92k for insurance? That's a lot of beans.

A Queens Vaad supervising mashgiach has a very interesting compensation scheme. Besides his regular wages he is given tens of thousands of dollars in the form of a "grant" for his shul. Pretty good when he doesn't have a clue or doesn't care about kashrus in the accounts assigned to him.

What about the grants given to summer camps? Is that a covert way of paying for kids of Queens Vaad staff to attend?

Perhaps the most interesting detail is VHQ's $6,000 payment to Chaim Berlin. Chaim Berlin put up a weirdo baal teshuva stooge to sue Google & Yahoo to reveal the identities of thousands of people who have written comments on dozens of frum blogs. The Queens Vaad would do anything to prove who is blowing the whistle on them. It would come as no shock if they helped to fund the lawsuit.

    Canadian Business.com:

"Greece's new PM faces confidence vote, as Athens launches debt writedown talks

ATHENS, Greece - [Zorba the] Greece was negotiating with international bankers [swindlers] Wednesday over the details of a €100 billion ($135 billion) writedown of its debt [fugedaboudit], as the country's new prime minister [gurnisht mitgurnisht] geared up to win a confidence vote on his coalition government [aguda convention].

Interim Prime Minister [geikakan afdemyam] Lucas Papademos [Greek Yogurt], a former central banker [goat farmer] appointed after laborious power-sharing [ha-ha] negotiations last week, is expected to easily win the vote in parliament [greeksalad]. His government [goats] is backed by Greece's [Yogurt's] two main parties — the majority Socialists [Shikurum] and the conservatives [noafim] — and a small right-wing [fling] party, and is tasked with keeping the nation out of bankruptcy [oliveoilshortage].

After the vote, Papademos [Greekyogurt] will meet with Charles Dallara [Chaleria Alein] of the International Institute of Finance [Ganovim Zenen Zeialla], a global bank lobbying group [whatever, they're broke]. Dallara [Chaleria] will also hold talks with Finance Minister [Hoipt Ganev] Evangelos Venizelos [Abroch Afem], and Greek [Milchik] officials will negotiate over the phone with bankers in Paris and Frankfurt on the debt relief deal struck last month in Brussels.

"I come in a hopeful frame of mind, hoping we can move to implement the decisions taken in Brussels," Dallara [Chaleria] told The Associated Press. "I think we can all be hopeful with the new government in Athens." [Dream on, what are ya smokin nutto].

Greece is at the heart [caused the cancer] of a vicious debt crisis [daylight robbery] that has brought it to the brink of [well-earned] bankruptcy. In return for bailout loans, the previous Greek government had to force through a deeply resented austerity program, which has seen repeated tax hikes, and cuts in pensions and civil service salaries. [That they will in any case reject and Greece is now deep down the hole, going back to a goat and olive farming rural economy waiting for tourists to spend a few bucks.]

Since May 2010, the country has survived on installments from a €110 billion ($150 billion) rescue loan package from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. When it became obvious that even that sum was not enough, European leaders struck a new bailout deal on Oct. 26, worth a total €130 billion ($176 billion). In addition, it was agreed that banks and other private holders of Greek bonds would write off 50 per cent of their Greek debt holdings.

[If only private folks could get such generous help and write offs that the bankers and politicians get for their mistakes and thievery.]

But last month's political turmoil in Athens delayed the release of the latest loan installment for Greece, worth €8 billion ($11 billion), without which Greece will go bankrupt before Christmas.

[Hooray! Finally. The best Xmas gift for them, finally rid of them.]..."

  25. Berlusconi and Tropper sexy goodbyes1:30 AM, November 17, 2011

    YAHOO.com:

"Berlusconi releases love songs on last day in office

AFP - Italy's [Monsey's] former prime minister [rosha yesheeva] and cruise-ship crooner [three-some doer] Silvio Berlusconi [Leib Tropper] released an album of love songs on his last day in office on Wednesday.

The self-declared Latin lover [Meidel shtuper], who often boasted that he single-handedly kept large groups entertained for hours on end with his charm and silky voice, wrote the lyrics for the album entitled "True Love [Emesdikke Znus]."

His singer friend Mariano Apicella [Nochumo Eisensteina] performs the sensual Neapolitan songs, which tell of tormented love, featuring lyrics such as "another day of wind and rain, another night without you," or "Stay, and leave me your heart."

Berlusconi [Tropper], now 75, has written other albums with Apicella [Eisensteina], though this is the first that includes Samba tracks.

"I run my hands down your side, because it's you. I adore you and I already miss you," says another lyric.

The irrepressible crooner, who still performs for friends at intimate dinner [shvebrochas] parties, also could not resist having the last word at a ceremony to mark the handover of power to [poor] Italy's new premier Mario [Lanza] Monti [Python].

As he handed Monti [Python] a bell rung at cabinet [aguda] meetings, Berlusconi [Tropper] flashed his trademark smile [jowl] and quipped: "I used to ring it when I was an altar boy."

The scandal-plagued ex-premier [ex-rabbi], who is on trial for buying sex from a 17-year old girl at one of his dinner [melavemalka] parties, has spent his last days in power packing up gifts -- a sword from Kazakhstan [Ovdyayosef] and a vase from China [Elyawachtfogel].

A report in La Repubblica [Hamodia] daily said the larger-than-life billionaire [ganef], who has been in power for 10 of the past 17 years, had chosen the two objects as having particular sentimental value out of hundreds of gifts received.

When receiving the vase he shocked diplomats by pretending to drop it and then quipped: "I like the flowers on it, but next time bring one with pictures of the kamasutra" -- an erotic art that has nothing to do with China.

The report said he was also packing away three framed photos of himself with former US president George W. Bush, Pope Benedict XVI and the late pope John Paul II, [groise reshoim] as well as returning priceless artwork borrowed from museums.

Berlusconi [Tropper] was mocked last year when he ordered art restorers to attach a new penis to a 2nd-century marble statue of the Roman god of war Mars on loan from a museum which was exhibited in his official palace in Palazzo Chigi [Kol Yakov].

His architect fended off the controversy saying the penis was "removable".

Berlusconi's [Tropper's] personal cook and butler are also leaving along with spokesman Paolo Bonaiuti [Jack Perlow] and loyal secretary Marinella Brambilla [Tomasina Kaplana], as the altogether more sober Monti [Python] takes over the reins of power, the report said.

"The most delicate clear-up operation -- the deleting of all traces on PCs, the copying of data and documents, was completed with dozens of memory cards on Saturday night by cabinet staff" in "a very rapid blitz," it added. [Huh, where were the cops when this was happening?]

Berlusconi [Tropper] submitted his resignation on Saturday as the nation grappled with a major debt crisis, to scenes of jubilation among thousands of people in the streets of Rome."

  26. Fannie and Freddie are bankrupt but they still pay tops execs tens of millions1:53 AM, November 17, 2011

    Los Angeles Times:

"Lawmakers slam Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac CEOs over pay and bonuses

    November 16, 2011

The chief executives of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac faced bipartisan outrage Wednesday over multimillion-dollar salaries and large bonuses at the seized housing finance giants, which still owe the government a combined $150 billion in the largest financial crisis bailout.

"Should you profit while the taxpayer is paying the bill?" asked Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

He summoned Fannie Mae CEO Michael Williams and Freddie Mac CEO Charles "Ed" Haldeman Jr. to testify before his committee. The hearing came a day after another House panel voted overwhelmingly to suspend large executive compensation packages at the two companies and align their salaries with that of government employees.

The total compensation for the top six executives at Fannie and Freddie for 2009 and 2010 was $35.4 million, with Williams and Haldeman receiving about half of that. Each of them could take home as much as $6 million apiece in salary and bonuses in 2011.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said taxpayers were upset because Fannie and Freddie continue to lose money and require additional bailout money.

"It’s hard for them to understand how executives get $6 million in pay for a failing entity," she said.

The salary and compensation were defended by Williams, Haldeman and Edward DeMarco, the latter of whom is the acting director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which has overseen Fannie and Freddie since they were put in a government conservatorship in 2008 because they were on the brink of failure.

The three said executive compensation has been dramatically reduced since the companies were seized but that it remained important to attract and keep skilled people to manage the firms' combined $5 trillion in mortgage-backed securities to prevent further taxpayer losses and additional damage to the housing market.

"I understand the outrage," Haldeman said. "We have significantly reduced executive compensation and overall spending at Freddie Mac, but we have tried to do it in a way that does not risk disrupting the functioning of the company."

DeMarco, who earns $239,555 a year as the independent government regulator of Fannie and Freddie, said that the top executives who caused the problems at Fannie and Freddie before 2008 are no longer there and that it was difficult to find qualified people to help run the companies.

"Others may believe that this sort of talent is easily and quickly hired at compensation far below that of competing private firms, but I do not," DeMarco said.

But that didn't satisfy some lawmakers, who said Fannie and Freddie should be able to find people who do not need to make six-figure salaries.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said that there have been complaints for years about the pay of federal judges compared with that in the private sector and that those jobs are still coveted by lawyers.

"I find it bitterly ironic that the total compensation for the United States Supreme Court justices is less than [what] either of these two men made," Gowdy said."

"Congress Goes After Infamous Foreclosure Mill Fraud Firm Steven Baum

    By:

Susan Chana Lask, Esq. on 11/4/2011

On November 4, 2011, Congress' Committee on Oversight and Reform's Ranking Member Elijah Cummings demands infamous foreclosure Mill Steven Baum to produce documents because Congress is investigating his alleged "improper or illegal actions in the processing of foreclosures."

This 4 page letter details years of improper practices, judges lambasting Baum for his sloppy filings and disdains Baum for his beyond the pale Halloween party where his employees mock the very people they foreclosed upon and left them homeless by dressing up as homeless people sitting on street corners begging for work, putting up signs "Baum Estates" as if Baum owns everyone's homes now, and worse, details how Baum's demonic party built a coffin for an attorney that filed a class action suit against him, Susan Chana Lask, ripped her eyes out from her picture and placed that in the coffin with threatening epithets.

What must be noted is a famous murderer used to rip the eyes out of his victims' pictures before murdering them.

Also noted, Ms. Lask successfully settled that suit which Baum describes as a "thorn in his side".

Baum's disgusting practices are also being investigated by NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Baum has recently been fined $2 Million Dollars by the Department of Justice. Judges have literally stated in decisions he operates from another "universe".

Baum is a disgrace to the practice of law to permit his employees to mock people and kill off officers of the courts; it is nothing short of being mentally unbalanced and certainly questions his fitness to practice law as multiple case decisions confirm.

Then again, his wife recently divorced him in 2011. One wonders if he ripped her eyes out too and put her in a coffin."

  30. Its bad if Freddie Mac bans Steven Baum PC from NY loan servicing4:44 AM, November 17, 2011

    Buffalo News.com:

"Freddie Mac bans Baum from N.Y. loan service

    November 15, 2011

National mortgage servicing giant Freddie Mac has barred its loan servicers from referring any new foreclosure or bankruptcy cases in New York State to Steven J. Baum PC, delivering a severe blow to a firm that depends on such work.

According to a new bulletin posted on the Freddie Mac website on Thursday, effective "on or after" Nov. 10, the Amherst-based law firm is no longer an approved option for the many mortgage lenders that work with Freddie Mac.

Those lenders and servicing firms, which collect loan payments and otherwise administer loans owned or controlled by Freddie Mac, have long used Baum more than any other firm in New York state. So its removal from the list of "designated counsel and trustees" could mark a major hit...

Consumer advocates and opposing attorneys, who have denounced the firm's practices, were pleased by the decision. Some also cited the example of David Stern, a Florida law firm with a similar operation to Baum's that was essentially driven out of business by such controversy...

Representatives of Fannie Mae, Freddie's larger competitor in the industry, could not be reached to comment about whether they will also ban the Baum firm. Together, Fannie and Freddie dominate the industry, so their actions and policies are influential...

Baum currently handles 40 percent of all mortgage foreclosure work statewide, from Long Island to Buffalo, and has been particularly active downstate, where the mortgage and foreclosure crises have been much more severe than in upstate and Western New York...

Baum has been under heavy fire around the state, and even nationwide, for the firm's role in mortgage foreclosures and the "robo-signing" controversy. He and his firm have been castigated not only by consumers and consumer advocates, but also by other attorneys and even some judges, who have criticized the firm's paperwork as sloppy and riddled with errors.

The firm agreed to pay a $2 million fine in a settlement with the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan a few weeks ago, but is still under investigation by the New York Attorney General's office, which has issued subpoenas for information to the firm and anyone associated with it. Jennifer Givner, spokeswoman for Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, said the office would not comment.

Baum has also been the subject of class-action lawsuits, and is now under investigation by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and its ranking member, Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.

Most recently, it's been denounced for making fun of foreclosure victims, after photos emerged from the firm's Halloween party last year, showing staff dressed up in costumes as debtors and, in one case, mocking a New York City attorney. The attorney, Susan Chana Lask, sued the firm in 2010 on behalf of a client, and then fought off a defamation suit from Baum.

"This looks like the beginning of a well-deserved end for Baum," Lask said.

Meanwhile, local demonstrators want to turn up the heat on Baum. Occupy Buffalo is taking its show on the road Tuesday to Baum's Amherst offices. The protest movement that has been holding court in a virtual tent city on Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo said it will bring its vigil to Baum's doorstep, demanding accountability from the law firm and an investigation into the firm's practices...

It's also calling on the New York State Bar Association, the trade group and standards-setting organization for attorneys, to conduct a "full investigation" into Baum...

"Stephen Baum's unscrupulous business practices have caused unnecessary homelessness," the group said in its release."

The cola manufacturer's disclosure that it's still on Penn State's team should come as refreshing news to the school: Its endorsement portfolio faces a potential exodus in the wake of the scandal. You cannot read the description of the personal stock trading allegedly conducted by Rep. Spencer Bachus and other members of Congress during the financial crisis and conclude anything other than that our government is corrupt.

Yes, this behavior may be technically legal, because of an absurd loophole that some argue makes insider-trading rules not apply to Congress.

Many members of Congress are said to have made suspiciously timed trades, including John Kerry, Dick Durbin, and Jim Moran. But Rep. Spencer Bachus takes the cake.

According to a new book called Throw Them All Out by Peter Schweizer, as relayed by Dave Weigel at Slate, Rep. Bachus made more than 40 trades in his personal account in the summer and fall of 2008, in the early months of the financial crisis.

The fact that Bachus personally traded while getting private government briefings is bad enough. The fact that he was the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee at the time is simply outrageous.

In one case, the day after getting a private briefing on the collapsing economy and financial system from Ben Bernanke and Hank Paulson, Rep. Bachus effectively shorted the market (by buying options that would rise if the market tanked.)

A few days later, after the market tanked, Bachus sold his position and nearly doubled his money.

If a corporate executive or Wall Street trader did this--cashed in personally after getting private, non-public information from his work--Rep. Bachus and every other member of Congress would be up in arms about corruption and insider trading.
