By David Brooks - The New York Times
...."This seems to be a moment when many people — in religion, economics and politics — are disgusted by current institutions, but then they are vague about what sorts of institutions should replace them.
This seems to be a moment of fervent protest movements that are ultimately vague and ineffectual.
We can all theorize why the intense desire for change has so far produced relatively few coherent recipes for change. Maybe people today are simply too deferential. Raised to get college recommendations, maybe they lack the oppositional mentality necessary for revolt. Maybe people are too distracted.
My own theory revolves around a single bad idea. For generations people have been told: Think for yourself; come up with your own independent worldview. Unless your name is Nietzsche, that’s probably a bad idea. Very few people have the genius or time to come up with a comprehensive and rigorous worldview.
If you go out there armed only with your own observations and sentiments, you will surely find yourself on very weak ground. You’ll lack the arguments, convictions and the coherent view of reality that you’ll need when challenged by a self-confident opposition. The paradox of reform movements is that, if you want to defy authority, you probably shouldn’t think entirely for yourself. You should attach yourself to a counter-tradition and school of thought that has been developed over the centuries and that seems true.
The old leftists had dialectical materialism and the Marxist view of history. Libertarians have Hayek and von Mises. Various spiritual movements have drawn from Transcendentalism, Stoicism, Gnosticism, Thomism, Augustine, Tolstoy, or the Catholic social teaching that inspired Dorothy Day.
These belief systems helped people envision alternate realities. They helped people explain why the things society values are not the things that should be valued. They gave movements a set of organizing principles. Joining a tradition doesn’t mean suppressing your individuality.
Applying an ancient tradition to a new situation is a creative, stimulating and empowering act. Without a tradition, everything is impermanence and flux.
Most professors would like their students to be more rebellious and argumentative. But rebellion without a rigorous alternative vision is just a feeble spasm.
If I could offer advice to a young rebel, it would be to rummage the past for a body of thought that helps you understand and address the shortcomings you see. Give yourself a label. If your college hasn’t provided you with a good knowledge of countercultural viewpoints — ranging from Thoreau to Maritain — then your college has failed you and you should try to remedy that ignorance. Effective rebellion isn’t just expressing your personal feelings.
It means replacing one set of authorities and institutions with a better set of authorities and institutions. Authorities and institutions don’t repress the passions of the heart, the way some young people now suppose. They give them focus and a means to turn passion into change."

A Cedarhurst man was arrested on Jan. 17 after he allegedly attacked a woman at the Hewlett Long Island Rail Road parking lot weeks before, causing her retina to become detached, according to the victim and police.
Mark Hecht, 57, was charged with two counts of criminal mischief in the third degree (felonies) and assault in the third degree. He’s due in court on Feb. 1.
The attack occurred on Jan. 6 at 7:15 a.m., when the victim, Janice Eng, of Woodmere, said she was pulling into a parking spot that was unoccupied — that’s when Hecht allegedly started banging on the car and accused Eng of almost hitting him. He then apparently tried to scold Eng with a hot cup of coffee, she said, and when he missed, he became more irritated.
Hecht then allegedly lunged at Eng.
“He ripped the glasses off my face and stamped them to death,” she said. “In the process of grabbing them, he hit me.”
The force of the blow caused Eng's retina to become detached, which required surgery. Eng said she still has vision problems.
Eng said that Hecht towers over her at about a foot taller and more than 100 pounds her weight.
“When he was in my car, I knew I couldn’t defend myself,” she said. “Whatever was going to happen, was going to happen.”
A Good Samaritan came by and Hecht fled, Eng said.
Eng didn’t call police for a few days to file a report, she said. On Jan. 17, she saw Hecht on the train and called police. Eng said MTA police did a sweep of the train and arrested Hecht, who was given over to Nassau police after Eng identified him.
The Agudah wasted their time trying to intervene and be moiche on his behalf now that Aryeh Ralbag has folded like a cheap camera.

The Orthodox Jewish community of Amsterdam reinstated its chief rabbi, Aryeh Ralbag, on Thursday after briefly suspending him last month for having co-signed a statement in which homosexuality was described as an inclination from which one can be “healed.”
According to the board of the community, NIHS, Ralbag’s reinstatement came after he “acknowledged both verbally and in writing” that he “should not have signed the statement using his title as chief rabbi of Amsterdam.”
Ralbag, a US-born rabbi who was made chief rabbi of Amsterdam in 2005, was temporarily relieved of his duties by the board of the NIHS after signing the "Declaration On The Torah Approach To Homosexuality" which called on "authority figures" to "guide same-sex strugglers towards a path of healing & overcoming their inclinations."
The online document was signed by 180 other US rabbis. Ralbag signed the online petition as “Av Beth Din Agudas Harabonim, Rav of Young Israel of Avenue K. Brooklyn, NY.” He travels back & forth from Amsterdam to the US.
Contacted by The Jerusalem Post after his reinstatement, Ralbag sent a declaration saying: "I sincerely regret & apologize to anyone pained by the inaccurate portrayal of my views."
He added: If a person wishes to live a Torah lifestyle, then that person must refrain from this form of sexual conduct. I am not here to excommunicate anyone from the community of Torah believers. Nor did I ever say that homosexuality is a disease or a sickness...when I use the word ‘healing,’ I am referring to a ‘healing-of-the-soul,’ a ‘spiritual-healing’.... My message was one of inclusion not rejection.”
In its declaration, the NIHS board spoke about the need to reexamine the current long-distance system, in which Amsterdam’s chief rabbi does not live there.
According to one person from the Jewish community involved in reconciliation talks between the parties, who spoke on condition of anonymity, “the message was that Rabbi Ralbag won’t be Amsterdam’s chief rabbi for long.”
The person added: “What happened is that both parties found a formulation that allowed them to climb down from their positions.”

ReplyDeleteScott Fagan of Oasis Catering and Traditions Restaurant in Lawrence takes "sales tax" from the whole 5 Towns on items that under the law are not taxable. He gives you the runaround when questioned about it.
That's not all that Fagan is involved in. His manager has been telling people for the last couple of years that many of their specific meat items come from Alle.
Are they lying? Because Alle cut them off and sued Fagan in 2009 for not paying his bills:
Queens County Civil Court
Index Number: CV-040930-09/QU
Case Name: ALLE PROCESSING CORP. vs. OASIS CATERING INC., DBA TRADITIONS FAGAN, SCOTT
Just about every year, Fagan is also in court with his landlord for not paying rent. Just one of the many lawsuits is here:
Nassau County District Court - 1st District
Index Number: LT-001085-09/NA
Case Name: THIRD NASSAU CORP vs. OASIS CATERING INC

Fagan doesn't pay his credit card bills:
Nassau County District Court - 2nd District
Index Number: CV-013983-09/HE
Case Name: CITIBANK vs. FAGAN, SCOTT A.
Case Type: Civil

Could Fagan be illegally pocketing the "taxes" because his house has been in foreclosure and he doesn't even show up to the court hearings?:
Nassau Civil Supreme
Index Number: 022605/2007
Case Name: INDYMAC BANK vs. FAGAN, SCOTT
Case Type: Residential Foreclosure Subprime
And how does the local Vaad continue to certify Fagan when he is currently suing one of the Vaad rabbonim in goyish court, Rav Feitman of the Red Shul in Cedarhurst, presumably without having gone to beis din?:
Nassau County District Court - 1st District
Index Number: CV-039794-11/NA
Case Name: Oasis Catering Inc vs. Feitman, Yaakov
Case Type: Civil
(Fagan's lawyer is Ira Scharaga, the "Honorary President" of another Vaad shul, the Young Israel of Woodmere. What a disgrace!)

People are saying Chaim is not 100% there and should be cut some slack, please understand that he was sane enough to prey upon our children, molest them and get away with it for many years, Then he is sane enough to receive any punishment that he gets, as well we have to keep our community informed of who to keep our children away from.
