(Are Philly manipulating the flip flops of both R' Chaim AND Biden who said yesterday he won't restart the farce with Iran unless Israel agrees. Not hard to do to old men with declining faculties. They've got Yanky in Bnei Brak. Who do they have in Washington? Biden did actually appoint a Baltimore Neuberger daughter in law to a major post)
As Haredi elements continue flagrant violations of lockdown, Health Minister Edelstein today called for jailing offenders.
Two were arrested today & 2 police officers injured during clashes as police shut down a yeshiva in Bnei Brak on another day of violent pushback vs enforcement.
The lockdown, in its 3rd week & extended to Jan 31, has shut all nonessential business & closed down the education system.
However, media reports show many Haredim flout orders, keeping open elementary yeshivas, weddings with 100s of guests & prayers attended by dozens despite lockdown limiting indoor gatherings to just 5 people & outdoor to 10.
“In the Haredi world there's too much violation, but the mood's changed a bit,” Edelstein said in an interview with Srugim News, which caters to the national religious community.
Asked if he supports prison for violators he responded, “Certainly.”
Edelstein said steeper fines haven't been approved by Knesset because too many MKs oppose it over concerns of how it'll impact their voters.
His remarks came after Blue + White accused coalition partners from Edelstein’s Likud of hampering enforcement of lockdown as agreed upon by the parties. Blue + White accused Likud of delaying a Knesset vote to raise fines due to politics, as Haredim are key allies of Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu & Likud.
Edelstein also defended appeals he & Bibi made to a leading rabbi asking he influence the community to obey lockdown. The minister rejected that such moves indicate Rabbi Kanievsky calls the shots, saying overtures are justified as a means to get the message to Haredim.
“If to do it you need to go to a rabbi, then I'll go 10 times,” Edelstein said. “Same goes for city mayors in Arab areas,” another segment with widespread violations of lockdown.
Aside from confrontations in Bnei Brak, Ynet news reports in Beit Shemesh, yeshivas were open, with students piling in buses to get to yeshiva.
Beit Shemesh municipality responded it's “led information campaigns, talks with community leaders & other efforts to clarify guidelines from the govt save lives.”
Noting enforcement of lockdown's the responsibility of police, the municipality said the “dramatic majority” of the city’s education system is shut.
Ynet also reported a Satmar yeshiva in Jerusalem, which made headlines the day before with violent clashes as police raided the site, was operating as usual today, residents saying studies restarted Wed minutes after police left.
A Ynet team of reporters who arrived on location were attacked by residents & chased away.
According to the report, whereas Lithuanian Haredim largely obey lockdown, there's widespread disobedience among Hasidic sects.
There've been daily incidents in which police face violent resistance to enforcing lockdown on Haredim. Police upped their crackdown on Haredim after media reports of previous limited enforcement, with figures showing rates of handed out fines to Haredim are significantly lower than to the general population.
Bibi on Monday asked Kanievsky, a major Haredi rabbi, to keep yeshivas shut if lockdown's extended, according to media reports. On Tues the govt extended lockdown by 10 days.
Channel 12 reported Tues that Kanievsky's quietly ordered elementary yeshivas remain open, telling associates G-d's angry that Torah study's interrupted & that's the reason for recent “tragedies” — referencing the death toll of 4,100+ since the start of the pandemic.
