  1. Additionally, Agudath Israel had an issue that energized young adults and could have been used to mobilize them and get them involved in trying to help. The graying movement could use some young blood but, by doing nothing to solve this problem, they've alienated an entire generation. It is beyond me how anyone who is willing to take the time to learn about the community and get involved, can read this Jewish Observer article and be satisfied.

What this article tells people like me is simple: the three-initial blogger is right that our community is incapable of responsibly handling this issue.

And is there any issue that can possibly be more important? We are talking about the physical safety of our children (the grandchildren of the aging Agudath Israel population)! If we can't take the relatively simple steps that are necessary, what's the point of the existence of these organizations? Filing another legal brief about gay marriage? Is that supposed to get us excited enough to get involved?

  3. "Window" Legislation - Power to Survivors of Child Sex Abuse

Message from Vicki Polin, Executive Director - The Awareness Center, Inc.

    September 30, 2007

Years ago I worked with young children who provided testimony in court regarding their victimization. Victim advocates often help children through the process by scheduling a time prior to the court date for the child to walk around the court room and also meet the judge (if possible). By doing this, it helps to elevate some of the tension and anxiety a child might have.

Someday you or another adult survivor may decide it's right for you to file a civil suit against your offender(s). Without the "Window" legislation you may not be allowed to do so. We need your help to make it possible for you to have choice.

We need each and everyone one of you to help to make laws better in the United States, Israel, Canada and beyond. Not just for children, but for adult survivors too!

The youtube video (see link above) is being supplied in hopes of helping you and any other adult survivors of child sexual abuse feel more comfortable about speaking out at legislative hearings, by seeing what it's like to do so.

The first two slide of the video are difficult to read. Below is the text of the slides

The following photographs were taken at CALL TO ACTION FOR STATE & NATIONAL LAWS LIFTING The STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS
ON Sex Crimes Against Children on both criminal and civil suits.

The news media even took place on September 25, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University - Jacob Burns Moot Court Room, New York, New York

It is estimated that one in five boys and one in four girls in America are victims of childhood sexual abuse. Most of the perpetrators are known by the victims. But, far too many of these crimes go unreported for many years -- only 10 percent of victims go to authorities -- and most of the offenders escape responsibility.

When victims finally -- and courageously -- speak up, they are denied justice
as arbitrary statutes of limitations prohibit them from seeking legal recourse.

Two states -- California in 2003 and Delaware in 2007, led by Sen. Peterson -- have enacted legislation that amends these arbitrary deadlines to enable both criminal prosecutions and civil actions against the perpetrators.

In California, "window" legislation, which suspended the civil limitation, helped identify 300 previously anonymous predators and enabled victims to seek justice again them. For the past several years, Assemblywoman Markey has introduced similar legislation in New York. It has passed in the Assembly, but has stalled each time in the Senate.

    From: "America's Most Wanted"

Since the show's inception in 1988, America's Most Wanted has captured more than 950 fugitives, helping thousands of victims worldwide get justice. But justice isn't always possible for everyone.

"One of biggest frustrations for us," says program host John Walsh, "is working on cases where the victims in some states will likely never see justice. Because each state in this country has its on criminal laws, often the statute of limitations precludes victims from ever seeing their attackers pay the price for their crimes." In New York State, for example, sexual assault cases have a statute of limitations of 10 years, which hardly seems acceptable given that the national collection of DNA evidence is a relatively new initiative and it often takes years and years to get a match or a "hit" on a particular criminal's DNA.

John Walsh references a recent case profiled on AMW: A man named Altemio Sanchez was wanted for a number of rapes and a number of murders in Buffalo, New York. The fugitive was eventually captured and has since been sentenced to prison for the three murders. However, even though DNA evidence linked Sanchez to more than a dozen rapes, none of those victims will ever get closure because the statute of limitations had run out. "It's time for Statute of Limitations laws to catch up with the 21st century," said John Walsh. "Only then, will victims of crime have a true opportunity to seek and receive justice," he said.

Moshe Rubashkin just became head of the Vaad that overseas the CHK hashgochos.

The hashgochos used to pay their shochtim and mashgichim weekly. They have to now submit the pay to the VAad who will pay the mashgichim.

The shochtim and mashgichim have already complained that they have not been paid in some time.

From what I hear there have been several survivors of Moshe Eisemann. The fear to come forward runs deep. They want to protect any more children from being harmed, yet they fear for their safety and that of their family members.

There have also been problems with trust. Why should the survivors of any alleged or convicted sex offender trust Phil Jacobs or any other journalist who writes for a Jewish news paper. All one has to do is look at the crap that Gary Rosenblatt of the New York Jewish Week pulled on first round of survivors of Mordechai Gafni. http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/gafni_mordechai.html.

  6. Report: Claims Conference withholding money from survivors

Report commissioned by Jewish Agency, minister for pensioners' affairs finds organization entrusted with managing reparation funds is holding back huge sums of money instead of giving it to survivors
    Michal Grievsky - Yediot Achronot

Tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors in Israel and abroad are suffering from financial hardship.

However, while these Holocaust survivors are waging a struggle in Israel for a monthly stipend of a few hundred shekels, it turns out the Conference for Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which is managing the assets and reparation funds for survivors, has in its possession a large amount of money that is not getting to survivors in Israel.

These grave accusations regarding the Claims Conference's handling of reparation funds are detailed in a rough draft of a report commissioned by the Jewish Agency and the minister for pensioners' affairs, Rafi Eitan.

The findings indicate that the Claims Conference possesses an estimated $1 billion of liquid assets in addition to other material holdings all around the world that are worth an unknown amount.

In the four years that are chronicled in the report, the Conference has held on to the bulk of the money that has accumulated and has not distributed it to those who are entitled to it. The report goes on to say that in 2004, the Claims Conference shelved out an estimated $26.7 million on managerial expenditures. Oversight on these expenditures is nearly impossible since they are not individually accounted for.

'Money must go to Shoah victims'

The Conference, despite being a public organization, does not elaborate on its expenditures or the way it invests or handles the Holocaust survivors' assets. "It is unclear to me," wrote Accountant Bar Lev, who authored the report, "why the Claims Conference holds on to all these assets instead of immediately distributing them to the victims of the Holocaust.

"Naturally, as time passes, it becomes harder to locate people entitled to receive reparation funds. The chance for those entitled to receive this money and to benefit from it is becoming slimmer and simmer."

While Julius Berman is the current chairman of the Claims Conference's board of directors, the real force behind the Conference is the president, Gideon Taylor, whose salary is estimated to be more than $50,000 a month.

Knesset Member Collete Avital (Labor), the former head of the Knesset committee for the Holocaust survivors, was not surprised by the facts presented in report. "In some sense, the State of Israel is responsible for creating this Frankenstein, the Claims Conference. With only 10% of the money the Conference holds in its possession, it is possible to solve all the problems of poverty that Holocaust survivors have in Israel."

Zeev Bielski, the Jewish Agency's director-general, said, "The Report shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that there exists large sums of money that are not being used and it makes no sense to keep this money in bank accounts instead of distributing it to those who deserve it after all they have suffered."

Mikhael Rozenberg, an Orthodox Jew, had only been working at Vonage Holdings Corp. for a couple of weeks in the fall of 2005 when the High Holidays forced him to miss a portion of a training session.

His tenure with the company was short-lived. Vonage didn't allow him to make up for the missed time and told him the only available position required him to work on Saturdays, according to a lawsuit filed on his behalf by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

That would mean working on the Sabbath, the time God put aside as a day of rest, according to Rosenberg's religious beliefs.

Management "told Rozenberg, "You will not fit here' and that when he stopped practicing his religion, he could come back," the lawsuit said.

Holmdel-based Vonage is one of a growing number of companies facing claims of religious discrimination — an issue that has become more complex as the country becomes more diverse.

In the Vonage case, the EEOC said Vonage had training sessions that didn't conflict with the holidays, but it didn't allow Rozenberg to participate.

The company didn't respond to a request for comment.

    The real reason you're broke

    By Liz Pulliam Weston
If you're constantly broke and can't figure out why, the answer may be sitting in your driveway.

Americans are spending more on their vehicles than ever before -- more than $8,000 a year on average -- and it's driving some to the breaking point.

Credit counselor Bill Thompson of Jacksonville, Fla., estimates that one out of every four clients his agency sees has overspent -- sometimes dramatically -- on a car.

"They may be spending 15% to 20% of their (take-home) pay on just the car payment," said Thompson, who supervises credit counseling for the nonprofit Family Foundations, "and that doesn't include insurance, gas, maintenance and all the other costs of owning a vehicle."

And sometimes there's more than one whopping payment. Sandra McGeary, a counselor at Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Western Pennsylvania, says she regularly sees middle-class families struggling with two payments in the $400 to $500 range. The burdens are so big that it doesn't take a major disaster, like a job loss, to send them over the edge.

"This fall they started coming in saying, 'We were doing so well. We don't know what happened,' " McGeary said. "I'll ask, 'Where did you cut back in your budget when gas prices went up?' and they'll usually say, 'What budget?' . . . A lot of times they don't know how much they can really afford, and they didn't cut back elsewhere" when their transportation expenses rose.

    Once they've bought, they're stuck.

With most other areas of the budget, you can find ways to trim. You can eat out less and shop more carefully to reduce your food bill. You can lower utility bills by adjusting the thermostat. You can cut your entertainment budget by canceling your cable service and borrowing movies from a library. You can even reduce your shelter costs by taking in a roommate or moving to cheaper digs.

Once you've committed to a car payment, though, your options are few, particularly if your loan is greater than the car's value. Whether you drive it or not, you've got to make the payments, and you've got to insure it.

    What's going wrong
So why are so many people messing up so badly on such a basic purchase? There are plenty of reasons, including:

Treating cars as a status symbol.

Thirty years ago, there was some truth in the idea that a lender wouldn't let you get in over your head. No longer. Not only are lending standards much looser, but many auto finance companies make loans knowing that a substantial portion of their borrowers will miss payments or default altogether. Lenders count on high interest rates to cover their risks. In short, they don't really care if you can afford the payment or not -- they're gambling on making enough from the loan that they'll profit either way.

Acting like a lamb before the slaughter in car dealerships. If ever a transaction were designed to soak the consumer, it's the typical car purchase. Car dealerships are experts at getting people to pay too much for cars or financing, and often both.

    http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695209041,00.html

Federal prosecutors are seeking a hefty sentencing increase for a former University of Utah professor who is accused of possessing hundreds of images of child pornography on his work computer, because some of the photos are sadistic and masochistic toward children.
William Zwiebel, 63, appeared in U.S. District Court on Monday with his attorney to contest an attempt by the prosecution to seek an enhancement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Karin Fojtik said Zwiebel ran a program on his work computer that downloaded hundreds of images of child pornography, some containing children engaged in sexual acts. Among the images were pictures of children in bondage or depictions of violence toward children.

Zwiebel's attorney, Mary Corporon, called as a witness her client's therapist. The testimony was ordered sealed from the public by U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball due to its personal nature.

After the testimony, Corporon argued that seeking a double enhancement in the case would be unconstitutional. She also said Zwiebel was not sexually attracted to those images but rather the pictures came with the batch downloads of images and that he didn't have time to review and delete them before he was arrested.

Fojtik said there was no behavior as reprehensible as depicting the torture of children.
Kimball set sentencing for Sept. 17, when he will rule on the enhancement issue. Although Zwiebel faces a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison, federal prosecutors say the masochism enhancement could mean a "significant" increase in his sentence.

Zwiebel pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in October of last year. In exchange, prosecutors said they will recommend that the court consider a reduction.

On Aug. 31, 2006, employees with the U.'s information technology department discovered what they believed to be child pornography on Zwiebel's computer. At the time Zwiebel was a radiology professor at the U. School of Medicine and chief of the imaging services unit at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

NY Politicians Slum With Newly-Indicted Chabad Felon

Okay. So you're a convicted felon and you also have a record of stealing money from your employees' union. You do time in the federal pen. You get out on parole and almost immediately run for president of the local, government-funded community council. You win. Then, while holding office, after being accused of assaulting community council employees you disagree with and after being accused of other thuggish and illegal behavior, you get indicted again, this time along with your son. You allegedly (intentionally, it seems) leave hazardous waste in an abandoned mill building you own, a building that sits smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood. You left that building unattended and unsecured. You remove all valuable equipment but leave behind the highly flammable and hazardous chemicals. Your building burns five times in suspicious fires over several months. At least one of these fires is ruled arson. During that time, as the government moves to seize the property and collect back taxes, fines and fees from you – an amount over $500,00 – you flip the building's deed to a company closely held by your family. Your son, using a fake name, claims that company did not own the building when the arson and other fires took place.

What happens? A few days before Rosh HaShana, the feds indict you for leaving the hazardous waste behind and your son for making a materially false statement.

    Then what happens?

New York City and New York State politicians join you for a festive evening in your family's Crown Heights succa. Worse yet, they pose for pictures with you and speak about your "generosity."

    Who are you?

Rabbi Moshe Rubashkin, head of the Crown Heights Community Council.

When i inspected it from close up I noticed that it had dents on almost every part of the car.
I couldn't believe it. Its starting to look like a piece of crap.
Than i saw him come out from the store, and he got in and ripped out of the paralel parking space knocking into both car (back and front) , forget about the pedestrians he almost knocked over, and sped off as if hes driving a corvette.

Rabbi Light sat down with Moshe Rubashkin, Harvey Lang, Mulle Plotkin, and Rabbi Zirkind.

The meeting was about discussing Rabbi Lights future at his job in the community council office (weatherization).

The goal was to get Rabbi Light fired with a Rov involved. And thats what they got.

I will have to say that Mulle Plotkin who until now has been a big Moshe Rubashkin sympathizer ( in slang: butsucker) was actually siding with Rabbi Light. Harvey Lang had no clue what the hell was going on, thats bc the meeting was in Yiddush ( I'm not sure if English would have made a difference, since he loves Moshe, G-d knows why!).

And Rabbi Zirkind sat like a puppet as Moshe gave him instructions on exactly what he wants to be done to Rabbi Light.

    And so it was.

Moshe again got his way. At the same time he is ruining someones life. He has taken away any dignity that Rabbi Light ever had by hitting him.

Now he has take n away his job. Rabbi Light was working there for 32 years, and he was and is the most liked person in the office.

Now he doesnt have a job. Where is he supposed to find work at 60 years old. ( I spoke personally to four workers in the office and they told me that the reason why they havnt stood up for Rabbi Light is bc they fear that Moshe will have them fired).

    But lets not lose focus.

My goal is to show you on a daily basis how Moshe is a sick sadistic, barbarous, brutal, fiendish, perverse, ruthless, vicious, uncivilized piece of shit. Somebody has to get him back.

Who will Moshe Rubashkin hit next? it may be you .

    You never know.

Just dont piss him off! As of now I only know of five or six people whom hes hit.

    He hit Rabbi Best.

I was told that Rabbi Best filed a report, the cops told him that unless Moshe hits him within the next six months from when he hit him last ,than their is nothing they can do. He hit Eli Slavin. I think he also hit Eli Poltarek, but im not %100 sure about that.

How about when he hit Yitzchok Holtzman. Moshe is out of control and whoever disagrees with him he'll kick their ass. just watch yourself. I'm a little bit scared for my life.

Moshe has no fear for anybody especially if your Jewish and Frum.

    His reasoning is as follows:

If he steals money from a frum yid, or he assaults them what is the person going to do.Well if you decide to go to Beis Din, forget about it.

Who do you think pays Beis Din (its not really his money its his father and brothers) Beis Din is afraid of him .

That includes Osdoba, Shwei and lets not forget Segal who walked out when Rubashkin went nuts.So if besi din is to corrupt to do anything.

The next option is to take it to a civil court.

The problem is that acc. to Halacha (which every person he hits keeps) you cant go to a Non Jewish court unless you get a Rov to sign a document that will let you go to such a court.

The reason is that if they would sign one thye would get beat up by the community (this was told to me by many Rabonnim including Rabbi Heller).so basically going to the courts are not an option.

Which leaves you with nothing. Especially because Moshes victims happen to be normal frum people.

Soon he will be in charge of crown heights for good. We must stand up against him before he gets any more power.

  31. Talmudical Academy: New Anti-Abuse Program

    Maayan Jaffe
    SEPTEMBER 28, 2007

Talmudical Academy of Baltimore’s board of directors ratified a conduct policy this summer advocating guidelines for physical and verbal relations among teachers, staff and students. The school began working on the policy about three years ago.

Two faculty and staff training sessions were held over the summer, according to Dr. Joel Pleeter, the school’s chairman of the board. A letter to parents went out this week.

Dr. Pleeter said the document — which was put together largely by a body of six parents — was examined by attorneys, rabbis and other professionals before being ratified.

The decision to write an official conduct policy, Dr. Pleeter said, was made "when it became apparent that things were happening in different institutions around the country that seemed to be inappropriate. TA felt it most appropriate to address these issues, in order to make a safe learning environment for our kids."

The policy, which Dr. Pleeter called "pretty progressive," includes prohibitions agains "abuse," "neglect," and "harassment," details inappropriate verbal usage, and puts into place a school reporting mechanism.

"We now have an ombudsman who these things are reported to," Dr. Pleeter said. "He is not an employee of the school nor a board member, and he can carry out an investigation, if it is not being investigated by the state.

The first ombudsman is Tali Strum. "In years past, people might fail to report, have felt funny to report, or it was reported but didn’t have proper follow-up. This policy addresses the follow-up issue and people can feel nothing is being swept under the rug," said Dr. Pleeter.

Rabbi Moshe Rubashkin, (born 1958) is a leading Chabad rabbi in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and a convicted fraudster.

[1] He was elected to a three-year term in 2005 to serve as the head of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, a public organisation that among other activities receives $2 million per annum in state funding.

[2] He has also served a 15-month prison sentence for knowingly passing bad checks and is still on probation. He along with the other members of the CHJCC are widely viewed as Chabad messianists and maintain the synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway to their taste

....Rubashkin was the owner of Montex Mills, a textile mill in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It ceased operations in 2000. Accoring to court papers Rubashkin was involved in an offense in connection with his operation of Montex Mills. Pennsylvania law requires companies to secure worker's compensation insurance for their employees.

Nevertheless, when an employee of Montex became injured and attempted to recover disability payments, it became apparent that Rubashkin, in his capacity as president of Montex, had failed to secure the required insurance.

On May 4, 2001, Rubashkin was placed in an ARD program for a period of 18 months. It was during this probationary period that Rubashkin - in an attempt to liquidate some of the failing plants assets, wrote bad checks to himself from the company, defrauding the Banks of over $300,000.

[4]Bank fraudA government investigation found that between March 25, 1999 and March 30, 1999, Rubashkin attempted to deposit three checks payable to Montex, all drawn from the account of an entity named First Choice Associates, into Montex's First Union accounts.

In the aggregate, the three checks totaled approximately $325,000. Rubashkin withdrew or used most of the funds which he attempted to deposit.

Shortly thereafter, First Union learned that there were insufficient funds in the account from which the deposited checks were drawn. Rubashkin pleaded guilty to one count of Bank Fraud under US CODE 18 § 1344, "execution of a scheme to defraud a financial institution".

[5], on July 31, 2002, for passing bad checks to prop up his failing Montex Mills textile business.

[6] He was sentenced to a 15 month in prison and a further five years on probation. He was also given a fine of $233,000.[7][8] He appealed the length of the sentence, but this was rejected.[9]

He served his time at Fort Dix Federal Prison in New Jersey.

[10]...The mill had been closed for more than 4 years and Rubashkin had defaulted on his city tax payments

  37. Warning to men in Boro Park: Ohel Family Services has in the last few years been getting many government grants. One of them was for the purpose of opening a domestic violence center. In order to justify the money they receive Ohel must ensnare woman to come for counseling under the pretense that they are being abused. Ohel hires social workers and counselors and makes a nice fee off this. Once they sink their claws into the woman they don’t let go very easy because this is a major profit center for them. It can evolve into profit from divorce counseling, children counseling and the list goes on.

Here are the signs to look for if you suspect that your wife is getting involved with Ohel.

Modus operendi: The counselor will first try to get the woman to get her own cell phone so she can contact her discreetly. The counselor has the woman call Ohel at 718 851 6300 and leave a message for the counselor. The counselor will then call back with the appointment time probably when the husband is at work so he wont find out that they are sucking in his wife. Ohel will not come up on the caller id. The caller id will come up as 646718. If you see that your wife has called 718 851 6300 and then has a call back of 718646 you will know that she is in touch with Ohel and you better take action before its to late. Ohel will give her articles, books and lists of items to convince her that she is being abused. You will then hear her use words and talk in ways that she was not familiar with before. Watch out for these signs. Warning your wife could be involved with Joan Hertz of Ohel Domestic Violence.

This is being published for the benefit of the Jewish Community by Ohel Insider. I hope to post more information about Ohel and names of its counselors in the future. Anyone else that has information should also share it for the benefit of the community. This is a major scandal ready to break open. The Rabanim are unfortunately all quit about this. Some are paid fat salaries by Ohel to condone what they do.

I realize that the ADMINISTRATION of the CHK (Crown Hts Kashrus) are Mafia Oriented Hoodlums.

    Unfortunately I have no choice.

For the past 40 years, my family has known nothing else other than Lubavitcher Hechsher.

I also have on reliable information that these hoodlums controlling the CHK have the Machshirim and Mashgichim in their pocket.

Their strong arm tactics, i.e. the Kapporas issue and the blackmail of mashgichim by firing them if they are not totally politically aligned with them is no secret.

I am also aware that getting our crazy chairmen of the vaad hakahal in their camp was the Rubashkin-icing on the cake.

I ask you, what are my choices?

The only way to bring relief to this situation is a mass demonstration at the chk offices and the demand that they clean house and get rid of the —- in the chk who are resposible for the strife in the neighborhood.

What Sholom Ber isnt clear about is that since Rubashkin became a member of the Vaad Hakahal, the CHK Hechsher has taken a turn for the worse.

He is the son of the owner of the meat Compamy where CHK gives a Hecsher.

Since he got involved, this meat company has been able to dump all their rejects on Crown Heights.

Meat that is unacceptable to other Hechsherim have found a cozy home in the CHK and unfortunately in our freezers.

These arent rumors, they are verfiable facts.

Meat that is slaughtered in the same company and was rejected by Rabbi Weissmandel is eagerly accepted by the CHK.

    No questions asked.

Just add up the facts, through Moshe Rubashkin becoming a member of the Vaad hakahal, his fathers company has found an outlet and a viaduct for all the questionable meat that several years ago would have been sold as regular kosher, now they are getting a premium for it by selling it as glatt.

Not plain glatt, but CHK glatt, the Hechsher that untill several years ago was legendary for its scrupilous and exacting criteria before cerifiying anything.

    How low we have fallen…….

    The Monsey Whistle Blower Says:

    October 19th, 2006 at 4:27 am
The infamous, Monsey Whistle Blower, Rabbi Shain, who blew the whistle years ago about the Butcher Store Scandal in Monsey (Long before it became public knowledge) was interviewed on the Zev Brenner Show recently.
Zev Brenner asked Rabbi Shain, where he expects the next brewing scandal to emerge, any time soon?
Rabbi Shain responded that he expects the next breaking scandal to be Rubashkins Meat!
It is rumored that the reason the Machon Lehoraah doesn’t want the CHK at the Razag, is related somehow to the Monsey Meat Scandal.

    the big lie Says:

    October 19th, 2006 at 3:36 pm
Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin was on Zeev Brenners show and he disprooved all of Shain’s arguments (or so he thinks). Rubashkin’s meat is accepted by all circles (who buy the Brooklyn Bridge). This whole story about the Bdatz not allowed to use Razag hall is all bogus. (Moish Finkel's mechutan Yankel Applegrad from YTT tod me so).

    Kosher Observer Says:

    October 19th, 2006 at 6:52 pm
My sources say the RAZAG administration is under tremendous pressure now from Brook/Rubashkin to find a solution to this scandal. Unfortunately in the contest between money interests and doing what’s right, it’s usually the money that wins. I bet the RAZAG will make peace with the CHK … until the next scandal explodes.

  55. MONSEY, N.Y. — Shalom Auslander ends “Foreskin’s Lament,” his memoir of growing up in, and eventually breaking away from, the Orthodox Jewish community here, not with an acknowledgments page but with a list of people God might consider punishing instead of the author’s family. Mr. Auslander is no longer observant, but he is still a believer, and he believes in a wrathful, vengeful God who takes things personally and is not at all pleased when someone leaves the fold and writes an angry and very funny book about it.

Shalom Auslander writes, “I am painfully, cripplingly, incurably, miserably religious.”

Walking to synagogue in Monsey, N.Y., where the writer Shalom Auslander grew up. “It all feels very ‘Twilight Zone’ to me,” Mr. Auslander said of Monsey.
“The people who raised me will say I am not religious,” he writes. “They are mistaken.” He adds: “I am painfully, cripplingly, incurably, miserably religious, and I have watched lately, dumbfounded and distraught, as around the world, more and more people seem to be finding Gods, each more hateful and bloody than the next, as I’m doing my best to lose Him. I’m failing miserably.”

On the second day of the Rosh Hashana holiday last month, Mr. Auslander visited Monsey, a village in Rockland County, for the first time in years. Driving down the New York State Thruway from his new home near Woodstock, he worried that God might take this occasion to snare him in a fatal car wreck. He had even rented a sport utility vehicle, rather than risk being caught in the family wheels on a day when no observant Jew would even think of driving. “It was in the back of my mind the whole time,” he said. “That would be a great punch line — for me to die in Monsey just as the book is coming out. There is no sicker comic than God.”

Most people were on foot that day in Monsey, walking to and from the village’s many synagogues. There were mothers in long dresses and snoods pushing infants in strollers, with boys in suits and yarmulkes skipping alongside; men in black hats and prayer shawls, and some wearing fur hats, breeches and white silk stockings.

“It’s not just whether you’re Jewish or not — there’s a whole checklist,” Mr. Auslander said, trying to explain the differences among the various groups. “It’s like gang symbols. Your clothing, your hat, how you wear your payess,” or sidelocks. “This is Crips territory here,” he went on, “and just being in a car automatically makes you a Blood.” He added: “I try sometimes to see myself through their eyes — as someone who has made a huge mistake. On the other hand, what if the big joke is that God has nothing to do with any of this, and doesn’t care about it at all?”

Pausing at a stop sign or to let some people cross the street, Mr. Auslander did draw an occasional disapproving glance. But otherwise the morning passed uneventfully as he cruised through the leafy streets of Monsey, its neighborhoods of split-levels, raised ranches and the occasional stuccoed McMansion resembling any other Rockland County suburb unless you look carefully. Mr. Auslander pointed to the many yeshivas and synagogues, some quartered in ordinary houses, and to driveways crammed with Big Wheels and plastic playhouses: a sign, he said, of Orthodox families with lots of children.

“It all feels very ‘Twilight Zone’ to me,” he said. “It seems more and more odd and more and more familiar at the same time.” He paused outside a house where he used to baby-sit. “The family that used to live here was named Kafka,” he said. “I used to wonder about that when I started reading him. It was like, ‘Do you know the Goldbergs from Long Island? Do you know the Kafkas from Prague?’”

On Maple Avenue he came to the Yeshiva of Spring Valley, where he went to school for a time. “Do you see that Hebrew lettering?” he said. “It says: ‘Please join us for a reading by Shalom Auslander. Bring your bags of rocks.’”

Mr. Auslander grew up on the other end of town, which used to be less religious, and looping around his own street, a cul-de-sac called Arrowhead Lane, he was astonished to find, next to his old house, a holdout: a ranch house with a “John 3:16” sign on the lawn. Nearby was a landmark he calls the Stone of Pornography in “Foreskin’s Lament”: a boulder behind which he used to find a seemingly inexhaustible store of skin magazines, ditched presumably by a guilty commuter heading home.

No porn this time, but there was a discarded box of nonkosher cookies.

Pornography, which Mr. Auslander eventually imported by the sackful, was part of his secret life in Monsey, both an escape and a source of anxiety. So were marijuana, orgies of nonkosher fast food and shoplifting expeditions. To a certain extent, he always felt like an outsider in the Orthodox world, he says now, but his escape proceeded by fits and starts, in spurts of rebellion and then periods of appeasement.

“The big discovery for me was that there’s a whole world out there,” he said. “That there’s no reason to be terrified of the Nanuet Mall and, even worse, no reason to be scornful of it.” But it took him years, including a stint as a bearded, fedora-wearing student in Israel and a subsequent gig as a weed-puffing shomer, or ritual corpse watcher, in New York, to arrive at his current, uneasy state of truce.

He tried ignoring God, and also compromising with him. As a teenager, he writes in “Foreskin’s Lament,” which goes on sale this week, he once rode his bike to Caldors on Saturday but then found himself unable to further violate the Sabbath by activating the electric-eye door opener. In the early-1990s he was married and living in Teaneck, N.J., working in an ad agency and just getting started as a writer. One Saturday he walked all the way to Madison Square Garden to see a game during the Stanley Cup playoffs. God punished him by making the Rangers lose.

“It’s ridiculous that I feel the way I do,” he said at the end of his drive in Monsey. “That I have this cartoonish view of God as someone who rewards and punishes. I feel like a fool when I read someone like Richard Dawkins,” he said, referring to the British atheist and evolutionary biologist. “But let’s trade childhoods.” Intellectually, he said, he understood Mr. Dawkins, but “emotionally I’m not there at all.”

He went on to compare himself, jokingly, to Moses. “There are two ways you can look at that story,” he said. “Moses makes one mistake and God shoots him in the head — he’ll never get to the Promised Land. But you can also say that he almost makes it and that his children will. I like finding the dark upside, and that’s why I ended the book with my son’s first birthday. I didn’t get free, but maybe he does.”

Ahava Dairy was embroiled in a major problem concerning an unkosher dairy culture that caused questions about the kashrus of the whole operation. Many accused CHK personnel of attempting to coverup the seriousness and extent of the problem. This caused a loss in consumer confidence from which both Ahava and the CHK never recovered.

There have been major allegations of corruption in Kashrus decisions as well. This has included:

a heter to use unfiltered NY water that puts the CHK almost alone amongst the Kashrus organizations. Political considerations have been alleged as local Crown Heights establishments have actually been prevented from using filtered water, including in the rinsing of meat and manufacturing baked products.
a persecution of local establishments who do not "tow the line" for the CHK. This has included Raskin's Fish, the Kretchmer, the Shuk, Bunch Of Bagels, and Cafe Boulevard.

And Gil's claim about the "anonymous comments" notwithstanding, this opened the shameful case of the fundamentalists that are filled with uncontrollable hate. This is grotesquely juxtaposed against the hypocrisy backdrop of the Loshen Hora jive. This is not all about clicks or money, this is about us. I feel that Gil should be ashamed about the tone that reared its ugly head online and offline. This is not a sickness unique to Modern Orthodox fundamentalist. All too many groups today have cultivated culture that defines people by what they are not, instead of what they are.

I am on the record of making similar protestation against the Lubavitcher Rebbe himself. There is no an excuse for a religious leader of any kind to preside over a group of people whose surface piety is a fig leaf for the streams or rage unleashed at the slightest provocation.

You don't what to go to Reshimu, fine no problem, but why use this as an opportunity for personal attacks? I will take Luke Ford or Scotty Rosenberg or the French kisser Josh, or the Cows over any of the constipated chest beating clowns. Los Angeles police last week began looking into the possible embezzlement of more than $700,000 from the Save A Heart Foundation, a nonprofit affiliated with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center that offers paid fellowships to Israeli cardiologists who want to study under specialists at the Westside hospital.

A Save A Heart Foundation board member raised concerns about financial irregularities in May 2006, after the foundation’s longtime administrative assistant began an extended sick leave. Cedars officials were notified, and the hospital’s internal auditing department began an investigation, identifying between $700,000 and $900,000 worth of questionable expenditures by the administrative assistant, according to hospital spokesman Rich Elbaum.

This past March, Cedars officials met with the board of Save A Heart and, Elbaum said, "recommended that they obtain separate counsel, notified them of their obligation to report as a nonprofit organization missing funds to the state attorney general and urged them to report it to the police as well."

But the foundation did not contact the Los Angeles Police Department until Aug. 30, the same day The Journal called asking about the alleged bilking. The press secretary for California Attorney General Jerry Brown said Save A Heart has not filed documents and disclosures that are required of all nonprofits since 2005. The foundation was recently sent a notice of delinquency.

According to Greenberg’s story, the Foundation only contacted the LAPD on August 30, the day the Jewish Journal first called to ask about this story (four days after I broke it).

Brad emails: "Hey Luke, Just so you know I didn’t poach from your blog without giving you credit (which I always do when I mention stories from it on The God Blog), I was working on the Save A Heart story when you posted the anonymous letter, which I also received."

Just because I like to bust your journalistic chops, Brad, you know that it is irrelevant how long ago you had this information. As far as journalistic protocol goes, the story still broke on my site nine days before anywhere else and is an important part of the timeline you describe in your story.

A judge in California says O.J. Simpson needs to surrender his Rolex.

The judge says the expensive wristwatch and other assets have to be turned over, to satisfy the judgment that found him liable for the deaths of his ex wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman.

According to the judge, Goldman's father is also entitled to any future royalties from a sports video game featuring Simpson.

And if any of the memorabilia items that were recently seized by authorities in Las Vegas are found to legally be Simpson's, he has to give those up as well.

The items were seized after a confrontation in a Vegas hotel that resulted in kidnapping and armed robbery charges against Simpson.

Will Chabad Whitewash The Murder Of Raul Wallenberg?

Chabad's 'chief rabbi' of Russia, Berel Lazar, is an unethical man. He serves as Russian strongman Vladimir Putin's pet poodle. He aligns himself with anti-democratic forces. He alibis for Putin. Chabad and Berel Lazar cheapen the memory of the Holocaust to give his patron honor. (And especially here.)

So what new outrages have Chabad and Lazar done this time? Lazar appears to be working to whitewash the the murder of Raul Wallenberg. And, no surprise here, Chabad.org reports the whitewash with a straight face:

The Russian government turned over to the country's Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar crucial documents dealing with the case of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust, the Associated Press reported last week.

Questions over Wallenberg's death have long gone unanswered and many speculate that after being arrested by Soviet forces in 1945, he was murdered under orders by secret police.

According to the AP report, Nikolai Patrushev, director of the Federal Security Service, the successor agency to the notorious KGB, handed to the rabbi photographs and copies of formerly classified materials about Wallenberg. The Federation of Jewish Communities of the Former Soviet Union, whose activities are overseen by Lazar, a Chabad-Lubavitch rabbi, had requested the documents in connection with its new Museum of Tolerance, set to open in Moscow next year.

During World War II, Wallenberg distributed Swedish passports to Jews who were being deported and won diplomatic protection for sections of Budapest. The Russian government said that he died of a heart attack in 1947 while in prison, but his family and others maintain that he was executed.

You may have also noted the name of Chabad's 'museum,' the "Museum of Tolerance." Lazar stole that name and the entire concept from the Simon Weisenthal Center.

So how did a thug like Berel Lazar become 'chief rabbi' of Russia? He was put in power by other thugs.

No honest person one should take Lazar's thuggery lying down. They only thing that will move Chabad is money. Withhold it and tell Chabad you won't give, no matter how much you like your local Chabad rabbi. No more money, tell them, until Berel Lazar is removed from his post and permanently exiled back to his Italian homeland.

I think this should be noted by all rabbis, yeshiva's and Jewish day schools. The Catholic church is settling in civil suits going back to 1938.

Southern California dioceses agree to $198.1 million settlement

SAN DIEGO (CNS) --- The Diocese of San Diego and the Diocese of San Bernardino, which broke off from its southern neighbor in 1978, agreed Sept. 7 to pay $198.1 million to settle lawsuits with 144 victims of sexual abuse by priests between 1938 and 1993. The dioceses had originally offered $95 million to settle the claims. The plaintiffs sought $200 million. Earlier in the year, the San Diego Diocese filed for bankruptcy protection hours before a trial was to begin in one of the first lawsuits alleging that the church was responsible for sexual abuse by priests. The judge in the bankruptcy case had recently threatened to throw out the bankruptcy case if the church didn't reach an agreement with the plaintiffs. The settlement is one of the largest in the country. Under the agreement, the San Bernardino Diocese and its insurer, Catholic Mutual, will pay $15.1 million for 11 cases. The San Diego Diocese will pay $77 million and Catholic Mutual will cover another $75.7 million for a total of 111 cases. San Diego will pay another $30.2 million for 22 cases involving members of religious orders. A statement from the San Diego Diocese said it hoped at least part of that amount could be recovered from the religious orders.

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 A New York jury awarded $11.6 million to a woman fired from Madison Square Garden for allegedly refusing New York Knicks Coach Isaiah Thomas' sexual advances.

The U.S. District Court jury found Anucha Browne Sanders was entitled to punitive damages from Madison Square Garden. Thomas wasn't ordered to pay anything.

U.S. District Judge Gerard E. Lynch called the verdict "eminently reasonable" but Madison Square Garden and Thomas are expected to appeal.

After the verdict was announced, Thomas said: "I'm innocent, very innocent, and I did not do the things she has accused me in this courtroom of doing. I'm extremely disappointed that the jury did not see the facts in this case. I will appeal this and I remain confident in the man that I am and what I stand for and the family that I have."

Browne Sanders was fired from her $260,000-a-year job with the Knicks in 2006 and sued both Thomas and the Garden, describing her work conditions as "Animal House." Browne Sanders alleged Thomas used derogatory terms for her but then turned to sexual advances.

According to Shalom Auslander, God is a four-letter word. Or, to be more exact, he’s taken to referring to the holiest of holies as “you fucking fuck.” (OK, that’s 14 letters.)

Estranged from his parents and still smarting from a childhood trapped in a strict Orthodox Jewish yeshiva, the author is writing a vengeful, unpublished collection of stories about the Lord, and he knows there will be hell to pay when he finishes. “I believe in a personal God,” Auslander explains. “Everything I do, he takes personally.”

At age 8 he launches a campaign of cussing, masturbating and eating meat with milk in order to provoke God into killing his drunken father. At age 35, he attributes the increase of attacks on Israeli civilians to the progress he’s making on his memoir. Choosing between rooting for the Rangers to win a TV hockey match and observing the Sabbath leads to his ultimate break from Judaism.

His constant seesaw between rebellion and guilt gets repetitive

    ReplyDelete
  88. http://thephoenix.com/article_ektid48431.aspx

SWEET SINNER: Auslander writes about his first traif experience as one might a first-sex scene.

Auslander considers the twisted relationship he and other Jews have with their God. God, he points out, is a big prick

Told that in Heaven he “would be boiled alive in giant vats filled with all the semen I had wasted during my life,” he lustily constructs a makeshift woman from his mother’s laundry. Told that eating traif (non-kosher) food is a loathsome sin, he becomes addicted to the stuff.

Auslander writes about his first traif experience as one might a first-sex scene. It’s full of excruciating descriptive detail, the indifference of the world at large juxtaposed with a tense interior narration as he works up the nerve to buy a Slim Jim:

“This is what Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said that God said about someone who eats non-kosher: God loathes him in this world and He tortures him in the next.

I don’t have all day, kid, said the Snack Shack man. — Anything else?”

Later, he discovers that he’s short 75 cents.

“This was God; this was God Himself, intervening in my behalf, giving me one last chance to pull me back from the brink of . . .

    Skip the soda, I said.”

Auslander turns his fear of God into a running joke: with each misfortune, he looks skyward. But by the time he starts chalking up everything to the wrath of the Almighty — from a bad experience in bed to his relationship with a fat girlfriend — the joke has become tiresome.

A typical low point comes when he spies the breasts of two scantily clad women on their way toward the Woodstock coffee shop in which he is working on his book. These breasts, Auslander asserts, are God distracting him from the task at hand: “this is Him, not taking any chances, covering the bases of my myriad perversions.” If only God had taught Auslander that some thoughts are better left unexpressed.

It is not the creation of novelists or journalists. It has exacted a toll in misery that would shame the Inquisition and a toll in treasure that would embarrass the Pentagon. It consists not of dashing Robin Hoods or buffoons but of willful, disciplined men who have too long burdened all of us. -Michael B.
