Jonathan Rosenblum’s recent attempt to wish away child sex abuse allegations in Ramat Beit Shemesh (“Think Again: Those Primitive Haredim – Yet Again,” Jerusalem Post, June 11, 2009) is so full of false assumptions and disingenuous gibes aimed at anyone audacious enough to challenge Orthodox rabbis on the issue (critics just don’t like the haredim, he suggests, even when the critics are themselves haredim) that no short response can do justice to them all.
But the greatest evil of his column lies less in what he says than in what he doesn’t say. For in Rosenblum’s head-in-the-sand world, when a fact reflects poorly on haredi rabbis, it doesn’t even get to see the light.
You’d never know, from Rosenblum’s writing, that anyone had made more than a few careless accusations about child sex abuse in Ramat Beit Shemesh. But of course they did: the complaints – all quoted in the Ha-aretz article Rosenblum responds to – were both specific and severe. A mother complained that when she reported her own child’s abuse (with “proof,” according to the article), the rabbis in Ramat Beit Shemesh “called me a liar and said that this kind of thing does not happen here.” Another parent, whose abuse allegation was supported by professional evaluators, spoke of “a combination of denial, protecting your good name and not involving the secular world” which, he said, characterizes his community’s rabbinic leadership. In fact, he told the reporter that “his family was threatened and pressured by community leaders not to pursue the matter with the police,” and even the abused child was “ostracized by most former classmates.”
How does Rosenblum deal with those charges? Simple: he doesn’t.
Nor does Rosenblum, who boasts of his acquaintance with Ramat Beit Shemesh’s “young, worldly and energetic” rabbis, ever tell the reader what those vigorous sages actually know about child sex abuse. One of them is quoted as prescribing “vigilance”; but all their energy and worldliness combined cannot give Rosenblum’s readers a single clue about what they look for in an alleged child sex abuse case, or how they look, or whom they consult, if anyone.
Rosenblum is even silent on what may be the most important question of all: whether these rabbis encourage their congregants to report to police without first seeking a rabbi’s specific approval. Rosenblum suggests vaguely that they must favor police reports on suspected offenders because a prominent haredi rabbi has authorized the practice. (He doesn’t name the rabbi, perhaps because – if Rabbi Elyashiv is the one he means – he misrepresents Elyashiv’s published view as more pro-reporting than it really is.) But if, in fact, the Ramat Beit Shemesh rabbis insist on being the ones who decide whether an allegation may move on to secular authorities, Rosenblum’s defense only means that the rabbis may support reporting a given case, assuming that they themselves are persuaded of the sufficiency of the evidence. How is that standard to be satisfied? Again, Rosenblum doesn’t say.
The disingenuousness of Rosenblum’s silence on these critical points is particularly offensive when juxtaposed with his sanctimonious outcry against the critics of Ramat Beit Shemesh’s rabbis. In attacking the parents, and David Morris, who has supported them, Rosenblum is uninhibitedly nasty: he accuses Morris, for instance, of making a “wild claim” and demanding that “a teacher should be automatically fired the first time any student complains of untoward behavior, and he and his family stigmatized for life.” Of course, Morris never demanded any such thing.
But more important, Rosenblum’s choice of targets – his selective invective – exposes the real point of his defense. It really doesn’t matter to Rosenblum, finally, whether the rabbis deny the reality of sex abuse charges, cover up for the guilty, and blame the victims. If they do all that, it’s simply proof to Rosenblum that blaming victims for telling the truth really can be better than taking action against those they accuse. The only thing certain is that one cannot criticize the rabbis.
Rosenblum even strengthens this bizarre implication with one of the strangest claims I have ever seen in print: that rabbis choose to stand between victims and law enforcement for the victims’ own good:
The rabbis’ preference for working behind the scenes derives . . . from a considered philosophy about what is best for victims, their families and the community. The knowledge that incidents will be publicized can keep victims or their parents from coming forward. In addition, publicity can lead to hysteria . . .
Well, there you have it, folks: the reporting of child sex abuse cases actually inhibits the reporting of child sex abuse cases. Even worse, it can cause “hysteria.” Wouldn’t want that, now, would we?
All in all, Rosenblum’s column – which claims to disprove the existence of child sex abuse cover-ups in Orthodox communities – is itself a kind of cover-up. Not only does Rosenblum refuse to discuss any of the key questions, he simply assumes they don’t exist.
As a contributor to the first book-length treatment of child sex abuse in Jewish communities (Tempest in the Temple: Jewish Communities & Child Sex Scandals, Brandeis University Press, 2009), I must add that Rosenblum’s denial is depressingly familiar. But if our communal spokesmen don’t start doing any better than this, we can only be headed for disaster in the long run. The political philosopher Leo Strauss once said of such empty theorizing that it amounted to “fiddling while Rome burns” – and he added these ominously relevant words: “It is excused by two facts: it does not know that it fiddles, and it does not know that Rome burns.”

ReplyDeleteNew report criticizes lay leaders of day schools
By Jacob Berkman · July 13, 2009
NEW YORK (JTA) -- “We can’t just blindly throw money at our problems,” Scott Goldberg says at a lunch meeting at Yeshiva University’s mid-Manhattan campus, referring to the economic crisis that is imperiling the country’s Jewish day school system.
“None of us can afford to do that in this economy,” Goldberg, the head of YU's Institute of University-School Partnership, tells education officials and journalists Monday in a meeting to introduce a new study on the governance of day schools.
Unfortunately, according to the partnership's report, lackadaisical lay leadership and weak boards of directors at the schools seem content with making half-hearted attempts at creating economically viable institutions.
The day school system in the United States is a $2 billion a year enterprise that requires $500 million annually in financial aid for students, according to Harry Bloom, who produced the report, a “Survey of the Governance Practices of Jewish Day Schools.” And as the economy has tanked, the system in its current form does not appear to be economically viable.
For the survey, Yeshiva University reached out to hundreds of board presidents at day schools, asking them to self-evaluate how their boards -- their economic lifelines -- function.
Bloom and others say the findings show that boards of directors seemingly are not as dedicated to their task as they could be, and do not fund-raise or plan effectively. Even when they manage to set goals, they often go unmet.
It’s a poisonous mix, Bloom said, that often comes from board members becoming involved and recruiting other members for social reasons and not necessarily out of interest for the institutions they are tasked with helping.
The pattern is found across all sectors of the nonprofit world, he adds.
The cruelty of Rosenblum's piece can not be emphasized enough.
ReplyDeleteNot only did he not meet with the victims and their families, he demeans them by attacking the credibilty of their claims without the decency of a phone call. When asked if he spoke to them, his reply was; "why should I, they could have contacted me" to paraphrase. How in the world should they know that Rosenblum was going to belittle them in a JP piece? Insanity!
I am in direct contact with these particular families, their stories would break the hearts of any person with the slightest humane sensitivities.
In addition, the reporters involved in exposing the RBS tragedies, spent a great deal of time investigating the allegations; and are convinced beyond any doubt about the veracity of the claims.
Jonathan; for shame -- you'll sell your soul for a Haredi yasher koach!

ReplyDeleteJonathan Rosenblum: "The rabbis recognize that ultimately the only cure for child abuse is prevention, which means above all educating children as to what is impermissible touching and must be reported immediately, and alerting parents to signs of possible abuse."
Many Haredi schools do not permit this type of teaching. Additionally, other key elements for fixing the problem, unmentioned by JR, include swift, forceful criminal prosecution; prison terms and lifetime monitoring; civil compensation for victims; and obviously, rigorous employee background checks.

ReplyDeleteBEFORE A Republican-led coup tossed the state Senate into chaos, Albany leaders were sparring over a new guideline that lets judges seal records of some rehabilitated drug felons to prospective employers.
Passed amid sweeping changes to the stiff Rockefeller drug laws this spring, the provision allows courts to prohibit rap sheet releases for certain non-violent drug offenders who complete sentences and treatment.
Access is still granted to law enforcement officials, agencies that issue gun licenses and honchos who hire police or peace officers. Papers would be unsealed if criminals are arrested again.
Previously, records could be sealed only with permission from a prosecutor.
"The goal is to provide every possible protection for public safety while allowing people who have successfully completed drug treatment to get a job," said Sen. Eric Schneiderman (D-Manhattan), who crafted the reforms.
But Republicans, led by Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose), are pushing a bill that would repeal the sealing provision.
They contend the current law allows drug criminals to work undetected at nursing homes, day care centers and schools.
"Conceivably, you could have someone become a teacher in a classroom having previously being convicted of selling drugs in a schoolyard," Padavan warned.
Schneiderman argued Padavan's bill doesn't "make much sense," but insisted he is open to other suggestions.
He pointed to another bill, introduced by Sen. Brian Foley (D-L.I.), that would extend access to drug records to any employer that fingerprints workers, such as educators and caregivers to the elderly and mentally ill.

ALBANY - Democratic leaders quietly reinstated a $12,500 stipend for indicted Sen. Hiram Monserrate - one of two lawmakers who briefly joined Republicans in a coup attempt and then flipped back.
ReplyDeleteState Senate sources say the check was cut after Monserrate was secretly reappointed to his position as chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee.
Sources said the move to reinstate him was likely part of the deal to bring the Queens Democrat back into the fold after he sided with Republicans in the June 8 coup that paralyzed the Senate for a month.
Monserrate was accused in late December of brutally cutting his girlfriend's face with a broken glass.
He was indicted in late March, leading Senate Democratic leader Malcolm Smith to suspend his chairmanship and stipend pending the result of the criminal proceedings.
Meanwhile, it was learned that Monserrate may have violated state election laws by using $14,500 in campaign funds toward his legal bills.

ReplyDeleteHeroin-addict hobos from around the country are overrunning hipster haven Williamsburg - living in stalled luxury condo projects in the trendy Brooklyn neighborhood.
The newcomers, who call themselves "gutter punks," are stirring outrage among residents and shopkeepers who charge the bums brawl on the sidewalk, shoplift and shoot heroin in trendy cafe bathrooms.
"It's like St. Marks in the '70s," said Williamsburg activist Philip DePaolo, referring to the notorious East Village hangout. "It's the bad old days all over again. There's crack and heroin all over the neighborhood."
The squatters, from middle-class families, hop freight trains to the city, where they can earn up to $150 a day panhandling in Manhattan. At night, like plenty of other borough commuters, they return to their homes: grubby hideaways inside boarded-up lots that pock the once-booming neighborhood.
"I've got to sleep somewhere, and I might as well do it in Williamsburg," said Stuart, 22, a Florida college dropout.
The admitted alcoholic and heroin user makes $15 an hour panhandling in Union Square, holding a sign that reads "Traveling Broke and Sexy."
"The girls here like it that I'm dirty and I ride trains," he added.
That's bad news for locals, who want Stuart and his brethren out - as soon as possible.
The vagrants - who also call themselves "crusty punks" - swarmed into Williamsburg this spring, drawn by open-minded young people and vacant lots.
Packs of punks and their mangy dogs clog Bedford Ave. in the evenings. They sprawl drunkenly on the sidewalk and heckle hipsters for money and cigarettes.
"There's a big crowd of us here," said Sethry, 20, of Portland, Ore., lounging near NorthNinth St. one recent night. "Every night it's a party with all our friends."
The Daily News found at least four current or recent squats clustered near Driggs Ave. and North 10th St., each littered with mattresses, clothes and bottles.
Squatters said 510 Driggs Ave. is a "shooting gallery" - a hot spot for heroin. The site, developed by Kalmon Dolgin, was slated to be a 50-unit luxury rental with penthouses fetching up to $5,000 a month. Kalmon Dolgin didn't return calls for comment.
Gutter punk Johnny has traveled hobo-style all over the country, but he has never had it as good as he does in Wlliamsburg.
He's just a short train ride from Manhattan, where he panhandles on Wall St. to pay for a hefty drug habit, his friends said.
"I've squatted all over the place," said the 21-year-old drifter. "I've never made as much money as I make here."
The $150 a day he can make even pays for his other addiction - electronics.
"It's one of the reasons I won't leave New York," said Johnny, who is originally from Jersey City.
"My girlfriend and I bought a laptop, a portable DVD player and a PSP."
Since November, Johnny and his galpal have been living rent-free with their pit bull.

ReplyDeleteThese bums are costing you a fortune.
Ricky Alardo, a homeless alcoholic nicknamed Ricky Ricardo, swigs cheap vodka by day at his favorite corner in Washington Heights, then calls an ambulance to chauffeur him to the hospital for a free meal and a warm place to sleep, courtesy of taxpayers who fund his Medicaid benefits.
For a chronic caller like Alardo -- who phones 911 four or five times a week -- the annual medical bill can be as high as $300,000. Over 13 years, the length of time he has been abusing the emergency room, he has cost the medical system an estimated $3.9 million.
In Midtown, another bum, Robert, has faked emergencies to get food and shelter in ERs about 40 or 50 times in the past three years -- and taxpayers pick up his tab, too.
Ricky and Robert are among the dozens of "frequent fliers" who clog the 911 system, tie up city ambulances, crowd emergency rooms and burn through Medicaid money.
An ambulance ride alone can run as much as $800, and an ER visit can cost, conservatively, $400 a pop, according to estimates from medical experts.
City officials don't track frequent fliers or the costs associated with their transport and hospital care, but anecdotal numbers from ER and EMS workers suggest there are dozens throughout the city.
"We have a system that is extremely dysfunctional. We have no place to put these people," an EMS medic said.
A paramedic working downtown said some frequent fliers think they'll get faster treatment if they arrive at an ER by ambulance, rather than walk in.
"They know what to say to our call takers," he said.
Or they'll tell a bystander, "Oh, I have chest pains," the medic said.
Alardo, 53, phones 911 so regularly, medics know which calls are likely his.
"When Ricky passes on, I'll probably even go to his funeral," said one medic who works in Washington Heights. "I've seen him almost every day for the last 13 years."
An inebriated Alardo lauded the medics last week, saying they "treat me like a king."

ReplyDeleteHaredi investors fear 'ilui' lost more than $30m
Nati Toker • Ha'aretz
Ultra-Orthodox investors who placed their money with Asher Shapranovich, the manager of Homesh Hashkaot B'Aliya, are afraid their money has gone down the rabbit hole.
The Haredi Web site Kikar Shabbat reported that Shapranovich admitted to one investor on Monday that all the money had been lost a few months ago.
Shapranovich also said that he had managed a total of $30 million, although his worried investors believe the amount was much greater.
A bunch of disgruntled investors broke into his offices Monday in order to loot property, including computers. Police were called to stop them from making off with Shapranovich's assets.
Shapranovich himself had disappeared about a week ago. According to rumors in the Haredi community, he lost all of his investors' money and fled. Some even suggested he went into hiding after the Tax Authority began investigating his business. But then the self-proclaimed financial genius made a surprise visit to his office yesterday morning. All he would say to soothe worried investors was that he had not fled, and that he would issue a response later in the day.
"I can't provide any further details at the moment," he told TheMarker. "Right now I am speaking with the investors."
Later in the day, between meetings with investors, he told reporters that he had no time for interviews. "I have work to do. I need to see clients."
Shapranovich, who was well-known in the Haredi community, founded his investment firm six years ago and advertised widely in Haredi newspapers. He built himself an image as a financial genius, claiming he had a unique technique of foreign currency investments that guaranteed profit.
One investor said he had enjoyed quarterly yields averaging about 5%. Another told TheMarker that Shapranovich had promised a monthly yield of 1% to investors who demanded bank guarantees, and 6% to those who waived such guarantees.
Haredi investors placed a great deal of trust in Shapranovich. His investment house is named Homesh because he would donate 5% of profits to charity. He was particularly close to the Gur Hassids, and donated substantial sums. He also led an ostentatious lifestyle, and drove a Mercedes.
As far as is known, the Tax Authorities are not investigating Shapranovich, despite rumors. The Tax Authority itself declined to either confirm or deny the claims.

ReplyDeleteThe reviews of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor’s testimony are coming in… and they are not good. The Washington Post’s Eva Rodrigues, who initially supported Sotomayor, wrote: “I’m surprised and disturbed by how many times today Sonia Sotomayor has backed off of or provided less-than-convincing explanations for some of her more controversial speeches about the role of gender and ethnicity in judicial decision-making.”
Commenting on Sotomayor’s testimony yesterday, liberal Georgetown law professor and Critical Legal Studies cofounder Mike Seidman said: “I was completely disgusted by Judge Sotomayor’s testimony today. If she was not perjuring herself, she is intellectually unqualified to be on the Supreme Court. If she was perjuring herself, she is morally unqualified.”
And Pajamas Media DC editor Jennifer Rubin reports on Sen. Jim Demint’s (R-SC) comments from Heritage’s tele-townhall last night:
In a Heritage Foundation-sponsored teleconference held after the Tuesday’s hearings, I asked Senator Jim DeMint and Former Attorney General Ed Meese about this issue. DeMint expressed concern that she had been less than candid not only in the hearing but in her private meeting with him. According to DeMint, he asked her in his office whether unborn children have “any rights.” She told him that she “had never thought about it,” a remarkable statement for any lawyer but especially for a judge who in fact has ruled on abortion cases.
As for her performance in the hearing, DeMint said that at the Republican lunch Tuesday there was a “growing concern” that she is not being forthcoming. He called her reversals a series of “hearing conversions” and confided that “increasingly more of our reasonable members” are raising the credibility issue. He dubbed her statement that she never read and was unaware of the [Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund] legal arguments a “jaw-dropper.”

ReplyDeleteWords matter everywhere, but American society hinges on every word that comes out of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Yet, in order to win confirmation to the high court, Sonia Sotomayor wants us to believe that her words should be dismissed lightly. That they've been taken out of context. That they were poorly chosen by her. That they don't mean what they appear to mean. That she was just joking.
Is that how she wants us to approach her written rulings as well -- to just read into them what we want, or better yet, what she wants us to read into them after the fact?
Or is she going to flip a switch at some point in time and boom! it's time to take her words at their face value?
Of course, we're being hopelessly naive and idealistic to believe that words, actions, rulings or anything else matter in the Sotomayor confirmation process. The only things that matter in this process are the numbers: Democrats have the 60 senators necessary to blunt any opposition.
Her confirmation hearing is more of a coronation.
How sad, because words do matter -- especially at the Supreme Court.
She once said policy is made at the federal appeals court level; she cynically joked that she shouldn't admit such a thing, especially on camera.
Today, however, we're supposed to believe that was "taken out of context."
She once said, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who has not lived that life."
Today, however, that was just a play on words. "My play on those words fell flat," she told senators, calling it "a rhetorical flourish that fell flat."
A "rhetorical flourish"? That "fell flat"? What the heck does that mean? Play on words? So it was just a bad joke, a poorly turned phrase (which, by the way, she used more than once)?
It's amazing what outlandish fiction the public, media and senators will swallow when they don't want the facts to get in the way of the sheer coolness of elevating the first female Hispanic to the high court.
Even liberal Georgetown University law professor Louis Michael Seidman wrote, "I was completely disgusted by Judge Sotomayor's testimony today. If she was not perjuring herself, she is intellectually unqualified to be on the Supreme Court."
Alas, neither words, nor any other facts, seem to matter.
But just one more question:
If her past words, by her own admission, have such pliability and ambiguity, does she view the words in the Constitution as equally fungible?
When you're a victim of any kind of abuse, you can do one of two things. You can learn how to turn your pain into purpose and make a difference in the world, or you can allow it to extinguish the light inside you. If you permit the latter, you are sacrificing far more than your childhood.....

Dos Vedanya
The question was raised about Yanky Mermelstein, the builder in Lakewood.
ReplyDeleteI was once victimized in a perverse scheme of his and I must say he is the most twisted person I have ever dealt with in many years of gesheft. I would warn anyone to beware of any similar scenarios to the one below so that you don't get hurt by this rasha.
A property owner on one job brought me in to sell the materiel to his builder, Mermelstein. Unknown to me at the time, Mermelstein had no interest in allowing me in but since he could not tell this to the owner, he went to great lengths to drey a kop, waste tremendous amounts of my time and seemingly get enjoyment from causing me a lot of hezek.
I don't know genoy what his motivation was. Sometimes builders get kickbacks from their existing suppliers which is why they won't switch. I have no information if that was the case. Or did he do it just for the heck of it?
While he had all the information, he purposely withheld the product schedule and specifications from me, claiming he couldn't get clear information from the architect and other sources. I had to spend two entire weeks to put the pieces of the puzzle together while he manipulated me like a yoyo. Because I had never experienced the diet of pathological lies he fed me, I was somewhat clueless that I was being taken for a ride, something that I will never fall for again if there exists anyone else on Earth as convoluted as Mermelstein.
He could have been a mentch but he chose to keep misleading me the whole time. His behavior was also completely bizarre. He would call me all the time, speaking in the tone of goofy laughter, but it was not always related to the job. He would do such strange things as call me at 11:30 pm and ask retarded questions. One such phone call entailed only asking me if I had heard from "Harry Hannukkah". I asked him 5 times what the heck he was talking about when he finally explained that "Harry Hannukkah" is the "heimish version of Santa Claus". This was the only purpose of his late night call. There were other examples. He would also several times just hang up without warning in the middle of a conversation. Is he in gantzen out of his mind or does his rishus know no end that he had to engage in extra layers of being metzayer yenem?
After he forced me to waste two entire weeks of my time for nothing, he first bashmutzed me to the owners with motzee shem ra mamash and then he was so evil that he even went on to bashmutz me to some of my customers to hurt my parnossa. Maybe he is the gilgul of the master builder of Sdom.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.tabletmag.com/life-and-religion/10540/grudge-match/
The event in question took place in January 1926; three articles from different newspapers are condensed here:
Just as the rebbe’s home in a shtetl functioned as his office, so did his new home in the city. His disciples would come to ask advice and request divine intervention, in close proximity of other Hasidic sects and their rebbes, making inter-sect disputes far more in-your-face.
Such disputes occured for a variety of reasons: within the sects themselves, they usually had to do with rabbinical succession. Between them, anything went. Disagreements could arise over when to start praying, which nigunim (melodies) to use, or what kind of kugel to eat on Shabbos. Certain sects suffered from such long-term feuds, for example that between the Belz and Munkatch, that nobody remembered what initially set off the antagonism. It was similar with the Porisover rebbe (Yeshoshue Osher Hurvitz-Shternfeld) and the Kolibyeler rebbe (Uri Yehoshue Osher Elkhanan Ashkenazi), whose disagreement had an unknown cause that resulted in bad blood between both of their followers.
In early 1925, the Porisover, a widower, had remarried. A year later, his first child, a son, was born. In an attempt to bury the hatchet with the Kolibyeler rebbe, the Porisover rebbe invited the Kolibyeler rebbe to the newborn’s bris. Moreover, he designated the Kolibyeler to serve as his sandek, the godfather who cradles the child as the circumcision takes places and holds the child still while the mohel performs the circumcision. This was a beautiful gesture. The Porisover, however, neglected to inform his own followers of his changed attitude toward the Kolibyeler. After having no doubt heard censorious homilies from their rebbe against the evil Kolibyeler, the Porisover Hasidim were flabbergasted by his largesse and didn’t quite know how to react.
The bris was huge. Rabbis packed the Porisover’s apartment; all of Hasidic Warsaw was in attendance. Wine poured like water. The Porisover Hasidim got drunk, and courageous; protesting their rebbe’s decision to reconcile with his former arch-enemy, the Kolibyeler, they defied their leader’s call to join in the opening prayers beginning the bris ceremony.
Taking note of his followers’ silence, the Porisover rebbe then invited the Kolibyeler rebbe to recite a blessing, further infuriating the Porisovers. “Raboysay, mir veln bentshn” (”Gentlemen, let us make a blessing”), the Kolibyeler intoned. The Porisover Hasidim couldn’t take any more and met the call to prayer with hysterical laughter. Their rudeness was shocking, but given the number of celebrants and the noise, their ruckus died down and the ceremony soon continued.
One of the Porisovers chimed in with the Harakhmones section of the ceremony and was joined by his peers. But a guest, the son of the Zvoliner rebbe, refused to let their outburst pass without incident, and blurted out, “it’s more appropriate to laugh at your singing than at the Kolibyeler’s.”
Their patience already thin, the drunken Porisover Hasidim were quick to react. One particularly inebriated fellow, Avremele Gritser, stuck his face into that of the Zvoliner’s son, called him a brat, told him to shut up, and cursed him as a “villain of Israel.” (Like their clothing, Hasidic cussing is relatively modest.)
ReplyDeleteSeeing his son berated infuriated the Zvoliner rebbe, who grabbed Avremele Gritser and warned him that if he didn’t stop insulting his son, he’d get punched—twice for good measure. Grister looked at the Zvoliner and replied, “Oh yeah? And you’ll get four punches.”
With that, the Zvoliner rebbe’s son dropped Avremele with two blazing fists.
The crowd jumped on the Zvoliner rebbe and his son, beating them mercilessly. They did what is known in Yiddish as “taking out a mortgage on someone,” which entails holding someone down with a sheet while others pummel him. This was most likely performed with the men’s prayer shawls.
Hearing the inhuman yelps of the Zvoliner father and son, neighbors came running. They rushed into the rebbe’s apartment and found the Zvoliner rebbe and his son lying immobile on the floor, their clothes torn to shreds.
The two pummeled men were dragged out of the building by a gaggle of Porisovers and thrown into the street. Only with the help of two passers-by were they put into a droshke (horse-drawn carriage) and taken home. Inside, the party continued as if nothing was amiss: the bris was completed and merry-making and dancing followed.
Shortly thereafter, the daughter of the Zvoliner rebbe burst into the apartment with a policeman. The officer asked the owner of the house, the Porisover rebbe, to step outside. His followers, however, would not allow the policeman to approach the rebbe and the daughter—described by one Yiddish press reporter as “a girl with a sharp tongue”—began to howl that her father was beaten and stomped on and that she demanded satisfaction. After a tense standoff, the Hasidim relented and the policeman returned to the station house with the names of the rebbe and the other brawlers.
The Zvoliner’s daughter told the group of Yiddish journalists that had assembled to report the story that they had not heard they end of her. She would press charges. But like many of the small, internal convulsions in the Hasidic world, this episode would ultimately be dealt with internally. Charges weren’t pressed; the incident was smoothed over. But it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Zvoliner rebbe didn’t at least hold a grudge.
Avi Shafran volunteered to personally view every video himself to make sure they are not pornographic.

A Brooklyn grandmother got the shock of her life when the "Austin Powers" movie she borrowed from the library was actually pornography.
Esther Klein went to the Brooklyn Public Library in Midwood to get the 1997 Mike Myers comedy for her grandchildren, but it wasn't the international man of mystery movie. Instead, it was 30 minutes of hardcore porn involving a young woman and two men.
"To my devastation, I can't describe my feeling, my shock. I'm speechless, I'm still speechless," Klein told CBS 2 HD.
Luckily she watched it first, to make sure it was appropriate and now wants to warn parents about her experience. Klein turned the tape over to Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who made a disturbing discovery.
"We did some homework with regard to many other branches and found out that this has been an ongoing problem in particular with videos for young people," Hikind said.
The porn started appearing back in January. The library did an internal investigation and revealed that there were 18 tampered VHS tapes found out of 35,000. They thought the problem was solved when police arrested a 29-year-old man who had borrowed a video and returned it with porn clips.
A Brooklyn Public Library spokesman said that the tape was the only tampered movie.
"This is the only tape that has been found to be tampered with since the investigation," the spokesman said in a statement. "We are 100 percent committed to ensuring that our materials and locations are safe spaces for everyone."
But Hikind wants every VHS tape pulled from library shelves until the problem is resolved.
"If they don't pull all these off the shelves until they figure out how they're going to deal with it, then they're really negligent; then what they're doing is criminal as far as I'm concerned," Hikind said.
It's also a reminder to parents and grandparents to keep a close eye on everything your children are exposed to, Klein added.
The Brooklyn DA's office is still investigating the case involving the man arrested in January.

Mermelstein would always push him off with lies like that the builder isn't the one who buys the stuff on the jobs he does. ReplyDeleteDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- With the federal deficit topping a record $1 trillion and rapidly on its way to nearly doubling by this fall, the government desperately needs to squeeze out every tax dollar it can find. That could translate into more audits or at least a letter from the IRS politely asking you to refigure your taxes.
''You're not going to find a document that says this, but it's very clear that in a budget deficit, increased tax collection is another source of revenue,'' said Ohio State University professor Bill Raabe, a federal tax expert. ''It's revenue that should be there that doesn't come in.''
The IRS estimates that it fails to collect about $345 billion in taxes each year. The largest chunk of the uncollected portion comes from individual income taxes, which accounts for nearly $200 billion. That explains why you now have a one in 99 chance of getting audited when just 10 years ago it was a one in 202.
''That means that who's going to really feel the brunt of this, who's going to get audited more often in a real sense is the bartender, the waitress, the construction guy,'' Raabe said.
The IRS has made no secret of its plans to close that tax gap through beefed up enforcement and audits.

ReplyDeleteNo matter how anti-Semitic Arabs and Blacks get, I will just keep acting like a politically correct shmuck and bend over backwards to say I still love them. No wonder it's rumored my own father doesn't get along with me:
WASHINGTON — Efforts to bring together Jewish and Muslim communities hit another snag when an imam at a major Muslim conference gave an incendiary speech in which he said Jews were to blame for the Holocaust.
The speech came during the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America, which was attended by rabbis who have been trying to build closer relations between Muslims and Jews.
At one of the conference’s 70 sessions, Warith Deen Umar, a New York imam, spoke critically of Jews, saying that the Holocaust happened to the Jews “because they were serially disobedient to Allah.” He also said that a small handful of Jews around President Obama “control the world.” ISNA immediately condemned the tenor of the comments. This was enough for some of the Jewish figures in attendance, but not enough for the Jewish terrorism hunter who brought the comments to light.
The divide comes in the context of a broader debate in the Jewish community about how far to go in dialogue with Islamic groups. One strong view has been presented by Steve Emerson, head of the Investigative Project on Terrorism and a skeptic when it comes to close ties between Jewish groups and the major American Muslim organizations.
Emerson has argued that ISNA and other Muslim groups are not as moderate as Jewish groups would like to believe. It was Emerson’s project that released a record and transcript of Umar’s comments, and he immediately rejected ISNA’s apology.
“I think they have fooled the Jewish groups,” Emerson told the Forward. “They haven’t changed.”
But Rabbi Marc Schneier, president and founder of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding and a keynote speaker at the ISNA convention, said that Islamic groups are too often condemned based on extreme outliers.
“When you have 99.999% of the people saying good things and one person saying other things, you shouldn’t magnify the words of that one person,” Schneier said. “It is time for the Emersons of the world to understand that the process has begun and that while there may be bumps on the road, the process has begun.”
Emerson shot back that “Rabbi Schneier is involved in legitimization of extreme Islamist groups for years. He wouldn’t tell a good group from a bad one, even if he got hit on his head by jihad.”
ISNA, the largest representative Muslim body in the United States, has been engaged in an active dialogue with the Union for Reform Judaism for the past two years.

Rubashkin faces new charges
ReplyDeleteBY GRANT SCHULTE • Des Moines Register
Prosecutors have added wire and mail fraud charges to the slew of allegations against former Agriprocessors executive Sholom Rubashkin, according to a seventh federal indictment filed today.
The new, 163-count indictment adds nine mail-fraud charges to the allegations against Rubashkin, and 14 counts of wire fraud.
Prosecutors allege that the former Postville meat-packing executive requested by fax advances on a $35 million bank loan. The requests were based on false information that was sent to the plant’s largest lender, First Bank Capitol of St. Louis, according to the indictment.
Government lawyers also allege that Agriprocessors mailed false financial reports to the bank, in violation of federal law. Each new charge carries a maximum 30-year prison sentence and a $1 million fine if Rubashkin is convicted.
“This is unprecedented,” said Rubashkin’s attorney, Guy Cook. “From Mr. Rubashkin’s perspective, it confirms the overreaching by the government.”
Cook said he will likely ask U.S. District Judge Linda Reade to postpone the trial in light of the new charges. Rubashkin will plead not guilty to the charges, “whether it’s one count or 163 counts,” Cook said.
Rubashkin sits at the center of a massive federal case against the Postville plant and several managers. The kosher slaughterhouse was the site of a major immigration raid in May 2008, when federal agents arrested 389 illegal immigrant workers from Mexico, Guatemala and other impoverished nations.
Charges listed in the indictment include immigration offenses, document fraud, bank fraud, making false statements to a bank, money laundering and ignoring an order of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
Prosecutors also dropped two counts of harboring illegal immigrants in the new indictment.
Bob Teig, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office, declined to say why prosecutors added the new charges
Is this pathetic or what? When he's with his own people he be speakin a different language.

Mr. Obama spoke for 45 minutes to an audience of several thousand people who had gathered in a ballroom of the Hilton New York to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation’s largest civil rights organization.
He was one part politician and one part black preacher as he spoke in lilting cadences, his voice quiet at times, thundering at others, in unusually personal terms. At one point, when his audience shouted back at him, repeating his words, he threw back his head and laughed, saying, “I’ve got an amen corner back there.”
“When I drive through Harlem and I drive through the South Side of Chicago and I see young men on the corners (doing nothing productive?),” he said, “I say there but for the grace of God go I.”

ReplyDeleteResidents at former Homowack Lodge asked to evacuate
By Victor Whitman
Times Herald-Record
July 15, 2009
SUMMITVILLE — The Department of Health has asked those staying at the former Homowack Lodge to evacuate the resort after citing the owner for “numerous, persistent and serious violation of the state sanitary code,” the Times Herald-Record has learned.
The state found numerous health and safety violations at the sprawling resort in Phillipsport after authorities inspected the properties following an oil spill last week.
DOH officials have asked lodge residents to voluntarily evacuate, town and county officials say.
“After several investigations conducted by New York State Department of Health in conjunction with town of Mamakating and other health and safety agencies, on July 13, the Department of Health requested a voluntary evacuation of the Homowack hotel in the interest of public safety,” Supervisor Bob Fiore said.
DOH District Director Mark Knudsen said in a prepared statement Machne Bnos Square (the former Homowack) was cited for inoperable/defective fire suppression and fire alarm systems, pervasive moisture problems from leaking roofs and plumbing and mold in occupied and unoccupied buildings. Inspectors discovered numerous electrical problems from water flowing over electrical boxes from leaking pipes.
The owners were also cited for inadequate supervision of children, failing to maintain the sewage disposal system, the disinfection of drinking water and protecting the drinking water well from contamination, Knudsen said.
The facility is being used as a summer girl’s camp.
Fiore said Wednesday morning he was not sure if the owners had complied.
“We will be going there today to observe their progress,” he said.
On July 10, the county’s Public Safety Commissioner Dick Martinkovic in a letter to the town building inspector Mary Grass, wrote he had “great concern for the overall fire safety of all persons who occupy buildings in the camp.”
He noted, among other problems, that the fire alarm system was not operating fully or sending any type of signal to the 911 Center, and that the sprinkler system also wasn’t working.
The Lodge is now owned by a group in New Square in Rockland County. A Record reporter and photographer searched for the manager on Wednesday morning until asked to leave.
Several of the buildings were posted with notices that the fire system was disabled and the buildings were vacant. However, none of the doors were padlocked and several adults and a few children were still in the posted buildings. Inside the main lobby area, the ceiling was caving in, and the lights were on.
There were numerous children’s bikes and playthings on the grounds. People indicated that the camp children had not yet been moved off the property.
“They are dealing with other hotels to get a spot,” said Rabbi Bernard Freilich, who serves as a liaison with the Orthodox communities. “I know they are trying."
So UOJ and the boys finally picked up on that two face Spira. How do you think he finances his luxurious lifestyle and trying to hang out with all the Agudah fresser machers and throwing yeshiva parlor meetings?

ReplyDeleteAvi Shafran has again been caught in a Madoff type Public Relations brouhaha. His latest piece discredits the Holocaust effects on the disabled and other groups he refers to as social misfits who experienced Nazi attrocities.
ReplyDeleteHe wrote:
"No one, though, is denying many groups suffered, and greatly, under the Nazis. But if there is any subtle denial in the air these days, if anything delicately desecrates the history of the Holocaust, it is the reluctance of some to recognize a profound and qualitative difference. Is this what Judaism truly believes? Or is Avi Shafran and his organization nothing more than a fringe element of ultra-Orthodox hate-mongers?
The difference between Avi Shafran and other fools is that the others don't realize that everyone else is listening when they speak.

Hi Sue,
Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother.
Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's
not so bad after all .
Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must
bore you with a few technicalities of my new job.
As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wet suit. This time of year the water is quite cool.
So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature.
It then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints.
What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working,
is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It's like working in a Jacuzzi.
Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only
made things worse. With in a few seconds my butt started to burn .. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened.
The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it..
However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate.
When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt.
I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all
laughing hysterically.
Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to
make three agonizing in-water decompression stops
totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the
surface to begin my chamber dry decompression.
When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber.
The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poop for two days because my butt was swollen shut.
So, next time you're having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your butt.

ReplyDeleteWHITE LAKE — The Town of Bethel has ordered a Hasidic bungalow colony to stop using a partially finished community center — but the colony has been brushing off the town’s warnings.
Residents of the colony on Schultz Road this month started using the large center without a certificate of occupancy, Town Supervisor Daniel Sturm said.
On Wednesday, the town issued a stop work order and ordered residents to vacate the building, but members of the colony have since been spotted inside the facility.
“We are trying to stop them,” Sturm said on Friday. “I think they are trying to occupy it still. We are monitoring it every day.”
The community center, located about 1,000 feet off Route 17B, is within easy eyesight of the road.
The colony is owned by United Talmudical Academy Torah NEYIRAH, which has a Brooklyn mailing address, according to town records.
Bethel residents have lodged numerous complaints that colony members was using the building. UTA has a permit to build the 6,900 square-foot center, but it had not been finished or inspected, town officials say.
Engineer Michael Weeks, of McGoey, Hauser and Edsall, visited the property Tuesday evening and deemed it unsafe. Weeks wrote in a letter he noticed several people coming and going from the building and numerous vehicles parked in front.
The unfinished parking area had extremely steep sides slopes, and had not been properly graded. There were no guide rails or clear pedestrian access to the building.
“At present, this site poses a clear danger to its users and other members of the public,” he wrote.
Sturm said the town will issue violations and these will continue as long as the colony continues to violate the order not to use the building. The town also plans a detailed site plan and building review to determine if the colony has complied with the building permit.
“We are taking this very seriously and doing everything we can to make sure people are safe,” Sturm said.

ReplyDeleteSPRING GLEN — In spite of warnings and health violations, a Hasidic girls' camp continues to operate at the former Homowack Lodge.
Even though the state Department of Health asked residents to evacuate the sprawling resort off Route 209 on Monday for safety reasons, more than 200 girls again slept overnight in buildings on the property.
DOH staff and Town of Mamakating officials met with the operators Thursday and reiterated "the necessity to evacuate the property as soon as possible," said DOH District Director Mark Knudsen, of the Monticello office.
The resort, now Machne Bnos Square, is owned by an Orthodox Jewish sect based in New Square in Rockland County.
"The operators are contacting parents of campers and expressed concern about sending children home if parents or guardians are not available," Knudsen said.
Knudsen said the camp has been directed to hire a third party to conduct 24-hour fire watches and act as an on-site fire marshal. They must also hire plumbing and electrical contractors, a building consultant to remove mold, and a certified wastewater treatment system operator to maintain the on-site sewage disposal treatment plant.
The owners had no permit from DOH or the town, prompting an investigation. Inspectors found leaking roofs, faulty electrical equipment, mold, plumbing problems and violations with the water and sewer. DOH gave the owners until July 13 to correct the problems before seeking a voluntary evacuation of camp residents.
County and town emergency personnel have called the buildings a fire trap. The fire alarm system was not operating fully or sending a signal to the 911 Center, and the sprinkler system does not work.
The owner faces fines ranging from $500 to $2,000 for each violation. The DOH Division of Legal Affairs is preparing orders to force the operator to close, Knudsen said.

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) -- Police are looking for a man with a self-professed sexual fetish for slashing rubber balls. Police have been seeking the 31-year-old since surveillance tape allegedly showed him breaking into a fitness clinic in May and slashing exercise balls.
Authorities are familiar with the man. A criminal complaint released Thursday said he was convicted in 2005 of breaking into a sports facility at the University of Minnesota in Duluth and slashing about 70 balls. Each ball cost between $30 and $60.
The complaint says when he pleaded guilty in that case, he admitted slashing more than 40 other balls at two clinics.
Court documents said the man told police he slashed the rubber balls to satisfy a sexual urge. Experts said he has an unusual attraction to inflatable exercise devices.

No doubt this bill was designed by Joe (We have to spend money not to go Bankrupt) Biden, a Ferd with mazel.
And Obamacare which will:
• Force employers either to offer health insurance to their employees or pay a tax of 8% of their payrolls. This would apply to all with payrolls of $250,000 a year or more (basically every business)
• Reduce medical fees to the Medicare Schedule Plus 5%, driving doctors out of the profession and increasing the need for rationing.
• Raise taxes on all making more than $250,000 a year ($350,000 for a couple) with a surcharge. Rates will go as high as 45%.
• Set up a government owned health care plan to compete with private plans. Getting a subsidy, it will soon put the private plans out of business and result in a single payer Canadian style system.
The disaster of the Canadian health care system is:
A cancer death rate 16% higher than in the US. A colon cancer rate 25% higher due to waits for colonoscopies and a death rate once afflicted that is 41% as opposed to 32% in the US. An eight week wait for cancer radiation therapy.

From the NY Times:
ReplyDelete“It will happen this year,” the president declared.
Whatever legislation finally comes to his desk, Mr. Obama said, will accomplish two goals long seen as nearly unattainable, or incompatible, or both: not adding to federal budget deficits over the next decade, and slowing the increase in health care costs at the same time.
Settling for any less, he said, would mean “consigning our children to a future of skyrocketing premiums” and burdening them with huge deficits.
Moments after President Obama concluded making his remarks, Representative John Boehner, the House Republican Leader, issued a statement saying Republicans agree that health costs most be lower.
“But the actual bill put together by House Democrats does not do that,” Mr. Boehner said. “According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, our official scorekeeper, it will not lower costs. Let me repeat that: the bill will not lower costs.”
On Thursday, the director of the Congressional Budget Office, Douglas W. Elmendorf, shook up the political landscape by suggesting that none of the major health care bills would significantly slow the growth of health spending.
Mr. Obama took no questions Friday afternoon after giving what amounted to a dressing-down to some legislators in both parties

* Was it hard for you to buy the company that was the subject of so much hurt? What role will the Rubashkin family play, if any, in this company?
He waves away the question. "That is not for now. I will say this. Whatever the Rubashkin family did or did not do, they were victims of a massive witch hunt.
"They are wonderful people and sincerely motivated by a desire to provide Yidden with kosher meat, and they did us a valuable service.
"The last few months were very rough. The huge facility was shut down, the infrastructure of the Postville kehillah [was] seriously affected, and most of all, the kosher meat consumer was made to suffer. There was a monopoly situation, and that’s never a good thing.
"Ultimately, it is the consumers who are being forced to pay higher prices for quality meat. Can a Jewish family live without meat for Shabbos, Yom Tov, simchahs? The only solution was to recreate an open market and make it affordable to everyone.
"I also love a challenge. Believe me, I don’t need this for my parnassah [income], baruch Hashem, but the potential is tremendous. It’s a remarkable place, efficient and state of the art, and we hope to have it operating again soon."
* How soon?
"Ideally, before the Yamim Tovim."
* Will there be changes?
"Maybe at the top level, but not on the ground. They have great personnel in place — shochtim, mashgichim, and we hope that they can resume doing what they do best."
* Will the hashgachah [kosher supervision] remain the same?
"We are still working that out, but we are committed to giving all kosher consumers a product that they can trust."
Reb Hershey knows that it will be a tremendous amount of work to win the public relations battle and convince the locals of his good intentions. "The natives up in Iowa are very wary of us, and we will have to do our best to be a good neighbor."
-------------------
So Friedman thinks that, no matter what the Rubashkins did – how many workers were abused, how many were ripped off, how many were treated like literal slaves – the Rubashkins are "wonderful people" who are victims of a "massive witch hunt."
This speaks very poorly for Hershey Friedman and for his ability to follow US law and treat employees like people instead of chattel.
And some suspect Friedman is trying to replace the OU supervision.
The fact that he will allow current schochtim and mashgichim to stay means he is not troubled by the large number of Chabad messianists that fill those positions.
Will Friedman leave Rubashkin family members like Heshy Rubashkin and Yossie Gourarie in place, running the plant, with a newly-named figurehead CEO as their boss?
Will the US Attorney will allow this?

ReplyDeleteBecoming Illegal
ReplyDelete(Actual letter from an Iowa resident sent to his senator)
The Honorable Tom Harkin
731 Hart Senate Office Building
Phone (202) 224 3254
Washington DC , 20510
Dear Senator Harkin,
As a native Iowan and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.
My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures it out.
Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay taxes every year so I'm excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any way that I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield an excellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes in 2004 and 2005.
Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local emergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figures I could save almost $10,000 a year.
Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughter would receive preferential treatment relative to her law school applications, as well as 'in-state' tuition rates for many colleges throughout the United States for my son.
Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the burden of renewing my driver's license and making those burdensome car insurance premiums. This is very important to me given that I still have college age children driving my car.
If you would provide me with an outline of the process to become illegal (retroactively if possible) and copies of the necessary forms, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your assistance.
Your Loyal Constituent, (hoping to reach 'illegal alien' status rather than just a bonafide citizen of the USA )
