Camp counselor at private Lakewood school charged with sexually assaulting boy By Michelle Sahn • STAFF WRITER • July 20, 2009

LAKEWOOD — A camp counselor who worked at a program run at a Lakewood private school has been arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a young boy.

Yosef A. Kolko, 33, of Gefen Drive, Lakewood, who worked as a camp counselor at Yachad, a summer camp based out of Bais Hatorah School on Swathmore Drive, was arrested Sunday, authorities said.

He was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities said the criminal activity occurred within the past year, and the victim was a boy under the age of 13.

Bail for Kolko was set at $125,000 and if he is released on bail, he is not allowed to have contact with the victim or anyone else under the age of 18, according to the complaint.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Senior Investigation Colleen Lynch in the special victims unit at 732-929-2027, Ext. 2905 or Lakewood Detective Thomas D'Elia at 732-363-0200.

  14. It's a known fact that in most cases a child molestor was usually himself a victim of child molestation.

How many times do you think Uncle Yudi put his nephew Yosef on his lap, or take him for drives in his car?

What about all of Yudi Kolko's grandchildren? Have they also been "touched" by Zeidi Yudi?

Or were Yudi's daughters smarter and was that the reason that they all moved to Eretz Yisroel - to be far away from their sick-o father?

  15. Rabboissai!

When you hear of divorces and one side bans all access to the child. There are always legitimate reasons for this. The side may or may not tell every bungalow yenta why that is. But, use your imagination!!!

Abuse hurts! Abuse destroys self worth and confidence. It erodes the neshama and can cause people to take their own lives.

When you hear about nasty custody battles and people are talking cryptic, when you hear of kids who move out of a city never to return, when you hear about rational people making extreme choices, FEEL FOR THEM. They are heroes. They are tzaddikim, they went through so much, but don't dish it out back.

They are who the passuk refers to when it says, "Hane'elovim V'einom Olvim, Shom'im Cherpossom V'Einam M'Shivim".

How dare society make fun, tongue-wag, or cause financial damage to those people? No matter how high and confident you feels you are, if YOU were involved in such behaviors, or if YOU caused financial damage to such people, Hashem will repay you with SPECIAL INTEREST.

YOU will never undo your damage, and YOU and your entire household will pay for the damage YOU caused.

The time for action is upon us. ACT NOW!!

  16. This case has all the hallmarks of child molestation. It is extremely rare for a child to fabricate such a story. The child was apparently a special needs child.

    Predators seek out such children.

Why a camp would hire a man in his 30's to care for children is beyond me. Anyone with common sense would question why such a man would want to be around children, as such low pay, etc.

It is not rare for pedophiles to commit incest and to go after children of their brothers, sisters, etc.

Fortunately, the family has gone to the police. The very high bail and the terms suggest the prosecutor has strong evidence.

Whether the family can withstand the pressure that will be brought to bear on them is another question. This pressure will be brought by rabbis, administrators, and ignoramuses. It will not be pleasant. There will be threats.

This is the time for rabbis to become heroes, to stand by the family, to show up in court, and to see to it that our children are protected. The rabbis can stand up to those who threaten the family. They can stand up for decency, and stand up to evil.

Will any rise to the occasion?

  17. There is nothing inherently wrong with a thirty something old man working in a day camp in the summer if he is a rebbe or a teacher during the year.It is okay for campers to have a more mature counselor who is perhaps also a father and understands children. It is not okay for a counselor to molest his campers, but, it has nothing to do with his age.

  18. The divorce – custody issue is returning to the blogosphere. As an askan that deals with this all the time, hear about some truths. People who divorce do so out of animosity, not love. The magnitude to which they can bury each other is the norm, not the exception. What can I get away with, what can I exact from the other, how can I make the ex-spouse’s life truly miserable, etc. These are the questions that are not only the constant thought, but are also on the lips of the attorneys, and sometimes even the Rabbonim and toanim that get involved. It is the norm to attempt to demand money in order to agree to give or receive a get. It is common to allege that the spouse abused the children, either physically or sexually. It is the norm to insist the other parent have only supervised visitation if any because of fears that he or she will take the children away. It is also standard procedure for one spouse to insist that the other have no decision powers for the children, no overnight visits, and no access to medical or school records. It takes pressure from the other side, and sometimes a voice of reason from various askanim or advisors, to drop ridiculous demands and to negotiate in good faith.

Ask any matrimonial lawyer. The “parting shot” of accusing the other parent of abuse and trying to deny custody is way too common, evening the frum community. It has nothing at all to do with abuse, molestation, or even fact. It is simply a reflection on the hate that powers the divorce process. So I absolutely challenge “Rabbinic Member” in the statement that there are always legitimate bases for withholding the children from the other parent. Wrong. It may sometimes have merit, but the parting shot is very far from rare.

Dayanim in Chicago say that most cases where abuse is alleged and given as the PRIMARY reason for the divorce, the allegations are TRUE. As opposed to when the PRIMARY reason is incompatibility, then a secondary claim of abuse is often false.

The dayanim encourage "mutual" agreement as a face saving gesture to the abusive side. If they choose to challenge the issue, let the goods fly everywhere. But, that is not ideal.

  23. JWB says:

False allegations of this nature are rare. I suggest you check the law enforcement statistics in this area. 2-4% is the only statistic I've seen from law enforcement regarding false allegations of sexual assault where the accused is KNOWN (the % of false allegations is higher where the accused makes allegations against an unidentified stranger). If you look at the subset of false complaints against a KNOWN accused by MULTIPLE accusers. The % of false allegations is practically non-existant. Further If you look at the subset of false complaints against a KNOWN accused by MULTIPLE accusers who are UNRELATED and did not know each other when they first disclosed abuse, you would be hardpressed to find many such cases.

I have researched several hundred cases worldwide in the Jewish community over many years and can count the incidence of false allegations on one hand.

The most recent incidence was in Brooklyn where former Judge Gerald Garson was convicted of taking payments to fix custody cases in a conspiracy that involved lawyers, court staff and a rabbi. It was known in the Brooklyn frum community that Garson could be used to "fix" cases. This had been going on for years. In several of the cases Garson "fixed" false allegations were used against spouses as part of the tactics. For the most part the spouses that the allegations were made against were women with fewer resources than their husbands. The case that did Garson in was a custody case that a Rabbi paid Garson to "fix" his daughter' divorce case.

In all cases, allegations of such abuse must be reported to the police and investigated. These allegations should never be dealt with quietly.

"Madoff" bill would charge rich NY inmates for jail

    Mon Jul 20, 2009

    By Joan Gralla

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For anyone who believes crime doesn't pay, tell that to the New York state legislator who introduced a "Madoff" bill on Monday. Rich New Yorkers convicted of crimes would be forced -- if his bill becomes law -- to pay the state and federal governments for how much it costs to keep them in jail.

The bill's moniker is a nod to Bernard Madoff, who began serving a 150-year prison sentence last week in a federal prison in North Carolina for running a Ponzi scheme considered to be Wall Street's biggest investment fraud. Before his arrest in December, Madoff had lived a life of luxury with a Park Avenue penthouse apartment and luxury homes in other glamorous locales, as well as yachts, designer clothes and collectible watches with eye-popping price tags.

"Far too often, taxpayers are stuck with the bill for criminals who have extensive personal wealth waiting for them once they are discharged from our state's penal system," Republican Assemblyman Jim Tedisco said in a statement.

Like many states, New York has looked at various ways of driving drive down the cost of keeping people in jail.

The state comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli, a Democrat, estimated in 2007 that it costs the counties around $1 billion a year, based on daily costs of $80 to $90 a day for each inmate.

Though federal prosecutors sought to strip Madoff of all of his assets before he went to prison, Tedisco told Reuters that his bill would force drug dealers and other high-profile people who serve jail time to pay for their prison upkeep.

If such a law had been in effect at the time, it could have targeted such wealthy inmates as Martha Stewart, the lifestyle guru who was sentenced to five months in prison in 2004 for lying to investigators about a stock trade, and Leona Helmsley, the high-end hotelier who was sentenced to prison in 1989 for tax evasion. Helmsley's prison sentence was reduced to four years, but she only served about a year and a half.

Tedisco said the need for his bill was demonstrated by "an incident in lower Manhattan's Tombs prison," a reference to an inmate's costly bar mitzvah that Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the city is investigating.

A sliding scale would determine how much convicts would have to pay, based on their assets, under Tedisco's bill. Those who are worth $200,000 or more would pay the entire tab, while those whose net worth is $40,000 or less would pay nothing.

Leaders of Israel's ultra-Orthodox community approved the establishment of a new association to run the independent Haredi education system, at a Jerusalem meeting yesterday. The new association would replace the current one, established by the Gur Hasidic sect decades ago.

The initial moves toward establishing a new association were made several months ago. In a rare step, Gur turned to civil court in an attempt to thwart it.

Dozens of security guards and police secured the conference venue, Novotel, in Jerusalem. Guards were instructed not to let anyone in who did not have an official invitation.

"We were warned that people might try to crash the conference or phone in a false bomb threat," a guard said.

In addition to Hasidic leaders, two of the most important figures in the non-Hasidic ultra-Orthodox world, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, were also present. They praised the Haredi unity expressed by the presence of three significant groups: the Council of Torah Sages of the non-Hasidic Degel Hatorah, and representatives of Agudat Yisrael from Israel and the United States.

Still, the conference may signify a new split in Ashkenazi ultra-Orthodoxy. It was a resounding slap in the face of the Gur Hasids, the largest Hasidic group in Israel. The group's leader, the Gerer rebbe, declined an invitation to the summit, and and his representatives had tried to foil the conference.

The struggle for control of the independent Haredi education system, one of the key positions in the ultra-Orthodox world, began in June 2008. The Gur Hasidim are struggling to maintain their hegemony in the face of challenges by a coalition of the smaller Hasidic sects in Agudat Yisrael, represented by MK Meir Porush, and the non-Hasidic Haredi Degel Hatorah party.

Porush, who had run for mayor of Jerusalem last year, won the support of Degel Hatorah after making a secret deal to redivide control over the Haredi education system, with Gur retaining control proportionate to its population. The outcome was a rift in the Haredi community, leading to a secular candidate winning the mayoral elections.

When asked whether the move yesterday was another step in this war, Rabbi Menahem Porush, father of MK Meir Porush answered: "subconsciously, yes."

  39. Stanley Fischer imitates Boog1:28 PM, July 21, 2009

Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer on Monday called on the heads of the ultra-Orthodox sector in Israel to promote employment among Haredi men and women in order to minimize the prevalent poverty among them.

During a conference for the ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem, Fischer said that the low employment rate among the Haredi men and women was the root cause of for the high incidence of poverty, higher than any other sector in Israeli society, including the notoriously poor Arab sector.

According to Fischer, 60 percent of the ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel were defined as poor in 2008, and that number has only grown since. "There is an enormous pool of human resources in the Haredi sector, which, harnessed, could contribute another driving force for growth to the economy, while also minimizing the poverty," he said.

SPRING GLEN — Officials suspect arson in an early-morning fire Saturday that burned to the ground an abandoned three-story building near the former Homowack Lodge.

Summitville fire Chief Tim Koestler said the fire is suspicious and is being investigated. All utilities, including electricity, had been shut off in the building, Koestler said.

The building was located off the now-dilapidated golf course, down the road from the sprawling former resort, Koestler said.

Authorities say the building, formerly used as housing for employees at the hotel, had been abandoned for a number of years. The building is owned by Congregation Bais Trana, a Hasidic group from Rockland County that bought the former Catskill resort and 400 acres of land in 2006.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which began shortly after 5 a.m. and took nearly three hours to contain. The fire was called in by a neighbor, and the building was engulfed in flames when emergency responders arrived. There was also a false fire alarm at the main hotel building later in the day.

The fire comes after a long string of complaints by neighbors and public officials about safety concerns at the former Homowack Lodge, now called Machne Bnos Square.

Early last week, the hotel was cited with three violations by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation after an oil spill.

Later in the week, the state Department of Health asked for a voluntary evacuation of the building "in the interest of public safety."

Town officials say the group was running a girls camp at the site, despite not having the appropriate permits.

Holly Budd, who has lived in the neighborhood for 23 years, said neighbors are becoming increasingly concerned that the former hotel is becoming a safety hazard.

The Awareness Center was just informed that Rabbi Jack Sparks is now "the rabbi" of Temple Hativkah - Homestead Jewish Center in Homestead, Florida. The Awareness Center is asking everyone to call and write to the Board of Directors of the synagogue and ask them what safety plan they have in place to protect their children from this alleged sexual predator. Be sure to let them know that if another child is molested after being warned that they can be held responsible in a court of law.

Rabbi Jack Sparks was arrested on May 12, 2008 on charges of child endangerment of a fourteen-year-old boy. Sparks took the boy on a shopping trip to the Fairfield News and Tobacco store on New London Road in Newark and encouraged the boy to pick out a magazine in the "back room" where pornographic magazines are kept. The boy declined, picking out a gaming magazine instead.

Dr. Rabbi Jack L. Sparks, holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Boston University, as well as graduate and undergraduate degrees in curriculum and instruction, Jewish studies, counseling psychology and elementary education. He has been an educator in Jewish Private Schools for 25 years in Boston, MA; New York City, NY; Miami, FL; Austin, TX and Talleyville, Delaware.

Unfortunately it is not uncommon for an individual who molest children to work in the education field and also to move around from state to state. There is a fear that Rabbi Sparks could have left a trail of victims along the way.

  54. The Awareness Center received an e-mail this morning regarding Cantor Stanley Rosenfeld (AKA: Stanley Rosenthal). I was informed that Rosenfeld has a parole violation hearing set for this coming Wednesday, July 22, at around 9:30am. This past Wednesday he was deemed mentally competent to be brought in for a hearing, and was transferred to the ACI without bail.

We need everyone's help to get the news media to do a story on this case. Rosenfeld is a seventy-five-year-old convicted sex offender pending new child abuse charges (Child Abuse in the 2nd Degree).

As I'm sure you are aware, the best way to prevent people like Mr. Rosenfeld from offending again is to keep cases like his in the public eye. Please help keep Stanley Rosenfeld from re-offending another time. How many times chances should this convicted sex offender be given?

Stanely Rosenfeld, is the former cantor and spiritual leader at Temple Am David received a 10-year suspended sentence after pleading no contest to molesting a 12-year-old boy he was tutoring.

Camp counselor facing sex assault charges also taught at yeshiva

    By ZACH PATBERG
    TOMS RIVER BUREAU

A camp counselor who police say sexually assaulted a young boy is also a teacher at a private grade school, the yeshiva said Tuesday.

Officials at Yeshiva Orchos Chaim on Oberlin Avenue confirmed that Yosef Kolko taught there during the school season but referred further questions to an attorney, Karl Mohel, who said he would not "confirm or deny anything."

Kolko, 33, was released from jail Monday on $125,000 bail after being charged with aggravated sexual assault, authorities said. The assault occurred within the past year and the victim was under the age of 13, police said. No further details on the case were provided.

Officials at Yachad, the summer camp where Kolko was working, at the Bais Hatorah School on Swarthmore Avenue, did not respond to requests for comment.

No one answered the door at Kolko's house on Gefen Drive Tuesday. A woman answering the phone at Mohel's office said Kolko was to interview with the lawyer on Friday.

Kolko, according to sources and genealogical data, is the nephew of Yehuda Kolko, a Brooklyn rabbi accused of molesting three young students in an explosive case that rocked the Orthodox communities in New York and, in May 2006, was featured in a cover story in New York magazine. Kolko, 63, pleaded guilty last year to endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to three years of probation.

He has a history of defending pedophiles. Maybe he can get together with Paysach Krohn to learn the barbaric clamp technique.

  58. Aron Teitelbaum and Dovid Shmidel1:00 PM, July 22, 2009

The ultra-Orthodox rioters who have been protesting the treatment of the ultra-Orthodox mother are being manipulated by "a group of extremists, full of hatred," a Haredi public figure told Haaretz.

"They want to hear the young men call the police 'Nazis,' for ideology's sake," the man said. His statement reflected an increasing rift among the ultra-Orthodox representatives dealing with the case.

Since Friday, when the mother was released to house arrest after a widely welcomed court-sponsored arbitration process, two voices have seemed to emanate from the extreme margins of the ultra-Orthodox community: one compromising and pragmatic and the second militant.

Members of the first camp say those in the second have hijacked the case, raising impossible demands, including contravening understandings reached in court.

Leaders of the Toldot Aharon Hasidic sect, to which the suspect belongs, say their people have been shunted aside. At the height of the crisis, family-appointed spokesmen Dudi Zilbershlag and Moshe Friedman threatened to step down from their role.

The background to the rift is found in the complex relationships in the Eda Haredit, the umbrella organization of Hasidic sects and anti-Zionist and separatist groups headed in recent years by Rabbi Yitzhak Tuvia Weiss. Although Toldot Aharon is one of the larger groups in the Eda, Weiss has been given the reins in handling the affair.

The public figures he appointed to deal with it, particularly Aharon Teitelbaum and David Shmidel, are considered extremely militant. Schmidel is known from his uncompromising protests over construction at building sites where human bones are found, and control over the tomb of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai on Mount Meron. Avraham Freulich, at whose home the suspect is under house arrest, is subservient to Teitelbaum and Shmidel.

At the family's request, the head rabbi of the Toldot Aharon group sent a sharply worded message to Weiss. He reminded Weiss of the 2006 case of the yeshiva student Israel Vales, arrested on suspicion of killing his infant son and subsequently convicted of manslaughter.

"If what happened to Valas happens to the mother, it will be your fault," the message said, according to a senior source. Following the message and an urgent court hearing Monday, the Haredi figures handling the case agreed to allow the woman to have an initial meeting with a court-appointed psychiatrist.

When asked whether a second meeting was forthcoming, Freulich told Haaretz, "no comment."

(IsraelNN.com) The head of the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, the Gaon Rabbi Natan Tzvi Finkel, posted a handwritten note on yeshiva stationery Thursday evening which told students at the yeshiva they were not to go to any of the hareidi-religious demonstrations which have been held in response to the arrest of a hareidi woman accused of starving her son, according to Ladaat.net.

    The note reads:

"To all the students of the holy yeshiva,

No one should be anywhere near any of the demonstrations, with no exceptions and no leniencies."
