The following letter was written by R. Wasserman from Toledo, Ohio, in 1938, to a young student (R. Elchonon Hertzman, from Mir and later of New York) requesting his help in escaping the Nazis. It's a famous letter written shortly before WWII:
"I received your letter, but unfortunately there is nothing I can do. The yeshivos in America which can bring talmidim from overseas are the yeshivah of Dr. Revel (YU) and [HTC in Chicago]. However, both are places of spiritual danger because they are run in a spirit of disloyalty to the Torah. Therefore, of what benefit would it be to escape [Europe] from physical danger to spiritual danger."
The letter is quoted in Hebrew in the excellent and inspiring Art Scroll history series book: Reb Elchonon: The Life and Ideals of Rabbi Elchonon Bunim Wasserman of Baranovich by Aharon Sorski. I do not want to give the impression that R. Wasserman was being heartless. Later on in the letter, he refers the talmid to Rabbi Shlomo Hymen at Torah Va Das (where Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky was Rosh Yeshiva) in Brooklyn, who will help.
Another good book: Silver Era in American Jewish Orthodoxy: Rabbi Eliezer and His Generation by Aaron Rakeffet-Rothkoff.There were only two Torah sages willing to stand up to YU before WWII. R. Wasserman and R. Aharon Kotler. YU sent over the pious rabbi (R. Henkin, good friend of R. Moshe Feinstein, grandfather of the R. Henkin (Nishmat feminist leader) training these putatively Orthodox women rabbis) to R. Wasserman to bring him to YU.
Torah scholar Amitai Bin-Nun writes: "I'm ashamed to admit reading this blog, especially in its current state, but I recall this letter (not to escape Europe to go to YU) being quoted in Aaron Rakeffet-Rothkoff's book "Bernard Revel: Builder of American Orthodoxy", so it should be easily verifiable. The other Yeshiva, if I recall correctly, was HTC in Skokie.
UOJ Notes- Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman was urged to bring over all of his students to Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and Rabbi Shlomo Hyman had agreed to step aside as the Rosh Hayeshiva and gladly have R' Elchonon take his place. Instead he went back to Europe where he was slaughtered along with his students . He is quoted in his "Kovetz Maamarim" as saying he intended himself and his students to be a "korbon" or a sacrifice, on behalf of American Jewry. So much for "daas Torah" and "gedolim infallibility".

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Most people would think twice before allowing a convicted sex offender into their home to do work.
But News4 has learned there are dozens of employers in northern Virginia who have hired sex offenders to do jobs that take them into private homes.
Starting in July, Virginia's sex offender registry began requiring offenders to add work addresses alongside the home addresses they've been listing for years.
They have served their time and they are following the law by registering as sex offenders and providing their work addresses. But a News4 examination shows they've been hired for jobs that might surprise people.
Three sex offenders list their employer as labor finders. The temp agencies cite the many jobs these men might be sent to do.
Two other men work for moving companies. It's work that takes them into private homes.
And several more say plumbing companies have hired them. That's a job that potentially provides access to homes.
Diane Beatty is a safety advocate whose organization works with the Fairfax County Police Department and conducts community presentations.
She questions the employers who've hired offenders to work inside customers' homes.
"I see they should be able to have a job, but if it's a moving company, maybe they could tie that person to doing appointments," said Beatty. "Do they really need to be the person who comes into my home and moves my furniture while my children are there? Absolutely not."
One Fairfax County mother knows firsthand that offenders can strike even when they are working on a busy job site. Her family was moving back into their Fairfax County home in July 2000 when a moving man attacked her 8-year-old daughter after she left the room briefly to take something upstairs.
"She ran up and told me one of the movers had hurt her and put his hands in her pants," she said.
The mother said the case reveals what can happen to children even when parents or other adults are nearby. She too questions some employers' staffing decisions.
When News4 contacted employers, some failed to return repeated calls seeking comment. But the owners of both moving companies said their employees have proved to be good workers and won their trust.
In contrast, the owner of one of the plumbing companies said he never knew the man he hired was a sex offender and he's distressed because although he fired the man for poor work, his company is still listed on the registry.
Like Virginia, the District of Columbia also requires sex offenders to list their place of employment, but only the address, not the company name.
In Maryland, individuals can request employment information for a particular offender, but so far, corrections officials have decided not to publicly list employers.
Regarding the writing issue, no wonder why there are so many shmekkers running into trouble with the IRS. A plus sign looks like a cross, so they never learned how to add. Subtract? Sure, thats a PASACH, kosher to teach so look at all the bogus deductions they take.
And it's a good thing that most currency is not printed on Shabbos. That would cause significant problems with in the generator purchasing department.
They also have trouble adding when they don't declare rent revenue from the illegal Flatbush apartments converted out of storage attics, garages and basements.
There are more reasons you could imagine that people have trouble with the IRS. The Feds know about all the shenanigans in Brooklyn which are a huge chilul Hashem, tax fraud and otherwise. They just deem it politically incorrect to bulldoze in and stop it with one swoop. Every few years, there is another crackdown like warning 13th Ave gesheften they'd better start collecting sales tax or flushing out grant abuse. When they actually have someone cornered, like David Schick or shadchan Brecher, they tighten the screws on them to make them rat out others for less jail time. You also have your profiteers in chassidish levush who are anxious to grab 100 grand in tax free govt payoff to provide solid information about "friends" and neighbors to the Justice Dept. You also have your "brown noses" like an older bochur who lives in the Madison neighborhood. He is an IRS employee who tries to keep it a secret. He allegedly tries to find out about fellow haymishe who cheat on taxes so he can report them to his superiors.
Doctor in the House -
You raised three red flags:
1. He's an "older bochur"; therefore, he has no sexual partner.
2. You always thought his behaviour "strange".
3. He makes bizarre comments to toddler-age children about them taking their clothes off.
Do you want to do a mitzvah? Watch this guy very carefully. Find out as much as you can about him: where he lives and works, the car he drives, the type of family he's from, the schools he went to. He shows all the classic signs of being a child sex predator. You and a few other totally trustworthy people should work together. You should appoint yourselves as shomrim, for watching this guy. This is what is being done in certain cities.
If you catch him doing something illegal, don't hesitate to call the police, or your state child abuse hotline.
Think long and hard before you talk to any rabbis. They have a greater potential to derail this plan, than to help you.
Also try to examine his behavior in any venue where he's near children, such as shul. Does he talk to children too much? Does he not have friends his own age? Is he a candy man? Does he try to put small kids on his lap, or wrestle with them? Do you see him looking at childen a little too much? If you see him interacting with kids too much, which kids? Are they from divorced homes, where there's a missing father figure? Do these kids exhibit unusual behavior?
I've read some of the literature, and I know what I'm talking about.

For the record, I am not the kugel fresser who was in Stoliner yeshiva in Israel. In that case, the guy snuck in every erev Shabbos and scooped out a big chunk of the kugel made for tish. The bochurim in charge started getting annoyed so they set a trap for him one week. They made an extra kugel that was spiked with extra strength laxative. He and his mishpoche got so quickly sick that he ran to the Tish and shreyed that no one should eat it because it's spoiled. The bochurim got in trouble with the rosh yeshiva for their vigilanteeism.

One of Solomon Dwek's creditors has been accused of engaging in criminal loan sharking because of two personal loans issued to the beleaguered real estate mogul in the fall of 2005.
The court-appointed manager of Dwek's collapsed holdings made the claim public Thursday and asked a judge to order Jack Hakim of Ocean Township to repay interest on a $500,000 loan and forgo all interest on the second $1.1 million loan.
The court papers accused Hakim of violating first- and second-degree state criminal usury laws, saying "facts show that Jack Hakim is in the business of criminal usury" — the legal term for loan sharking, according to Barron's Law Dictionary.
The papers accuse Hakim of collecting $25,000 in interest when he was repaid for a two-week $500,000 loan in September 2005, representing an annual interest rate of 122 percent. And Hakim is accused of charging Dwek an annual rate of 43 percent interest on a $1.1 million loan issued to Dwek in December 2005. That loan, which was due last February, remains unpaid. Hakim claims he's owed $1.6 million in principal and interest through December 2006.
State law bars an annual interest rate of more than 30 percent, Lomurro said.

are writing to you to announce the shul’s upcoming 41st Dinner Anniversary Dinner Celebration. Our celebration
year reflects our delight that the shul, including the mikvah, is undergoing extensive reconstruction. Through this work, we aim to meet the needs of our growing congregation and make our mikdash ma ‘at, the truly beautiful place it deserves to be.
This year’s celebration, however, is also deeply connected to our concern for Rabbi and Rebbetzin Ashkenazi. Over
past forty-one years, with Hashem’s help they have toiled to build our congregation brick by brick. They have struggled continuously to strengthen the community, thus bringing, about a dramatic change in the neighborhood surrounding the shul.
Without question, their unceasing dedication and immeasurable chesed has changed the landscape, in ways that bring tremendous benefit to each and every one of us every single day of our lives.
The Alesker Rebbe deserves immense credit for his efforts in this regard. But also, of course, for his extraordinary Torah leadership. Indeed, his fiery, uncompromising commitment to Yiddshkeit serves as a model to us all.
you know, three years ago, the Rebbe was hit with a debilitating stroke that left him in need of ongoing physical therapy. And then, sadly, came the shock of the Rebbetzin being diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Though
smile and incredible warmth remain untouched, she is now burdened by the need for constant medical attention and round-the-clock nursing care.
The exorbitant medical costs faced by the Rebbe and Rebbetzin are only partially covered by insurance. Quite simply, a painfully significant portion is not covered. The Rebbe and Rebbetzin have given their all to our community
seeking as much as possible to do it on their own. But now they need our help.

Someone should check out the Rebbes who are teaching elementary school in Torah Temimah. one of them covered yp his own son's sexual abuse by his nephew. Can this Rebbe be trusted to care for other people's children when he doesn't care about his own son's mental health ow well being?
The fact that hashgochos are for profit is a problem in itself which makes pretty much any of them prone to corruption. I am part of an email pool of friends. I once wrote about an incident, or shall I say "alleged" incident in case the bums sue, with Levana's restaurant on the Upper West Side being machshil the rabim with tarfus. After the email made it's rounds around cyberspace and into more & more in boxes, I received a threatening email from an OU official who demanded I make a public retraction "for starters". He completely denied that the "scrupulous Lubavitcher" (oxymoron?) owners would do such a thing. It is possible that the OU was not aware of what had transpired earlier under the Chof K until I brought it to everyone's attention. I stood my ground and provided details of what took place. The OU official who claimed he was not acting in an official capacity although he wrote on OU letterhead, checked into it and admitted there was some sort of scandal, but insisted that now that the OU is in charge, it is perfectly safe to eat from them. I just laughed at him, relating my rov's shita that you can never again trust someone who cheated. As the story goes, the old mashgiach with the Chof K caught them red handed renting porcelain plates from a treif company when they catered outside affairs. The "scrupulous Lubavitchers" tried to buy the mashgiach's silence. The mashgiach would not take their bribe and reported them to the Chof K. The Chof K, afraid that another hashgocho would pick them up thus depriving them of the revenue, decided to cover it up. They threatened the mashgiach that if he opened his mouth to anyone he will lose his job. The mashgiach confided in his rosh yeshiva (the same person I heard the story from) and later decided to quit.
The RASHBASH was against Kabbalah of his day. He claimed that there is a kaballah going back to Moshe at Sinai, but the whole idea of the sefiros are not the true kaballah, just some made up stuff. True kaballah can never be written down, ever.
Question: Either the Sefiros are G-d himself or an attribute of G-d. If the former, then how is it different from christianity. If the latter, then why 10 and not 13? Either they are the same 10 midos that make up the 13 midos that G-d told Moshe, or they are a different 10. If they are the same then why are 3 left out? If they are different then who needs them ~ they are clearly inferior to the 13 that G-d told Moshe, and if we have the 13 then why do we need the 10 also?
If they are not G-d himself, nor the attributes of G-d, but rather mere influences, how can one be allowed to paray to them ~ even one who davens to a malach is an apikores?!?

Think 10 ma'amaros and 10 dibros, and notice that the 13 attributes exclude din, the sefirah "without which the world could not last" and you'll be on a better track.
Someone wrote a letter to Harav Dessler zt”l, in which he apparently accused the great Rabbis of the previous generation of being responsible for the tragic outcome of the terrible Holocaust, by giving bad advice to their petitioners (and not encouraging them to emigrate to Eretz Yisrael en masse). Rav Dessler’s response was published in Michtav Me’eliyahu volume 1, under the title, “A letter on the subject of faith in the Sages,” which was translated in “Strive for Truth” by Rabbi Aryeh Carmel. Rav Dessler doesn’t actually deal with the question itself, but reprimands his correspondent on the obligation to trust in the greater wisdom of the rabbis, who have Heavenly guidance, rather than our own humble intellect. He supports his argument with a discourse he heard from his mentor, the great Rabbi Simchah Zissel Ziv, the Alter of Kelm. Following is an excerpt of the article as it appears in “Strive for Truth.”
Megillat Ester is a record of events covering a period of nine years, from the third to the twelfth years of the reign or Achashverosh. We, and maybe even greater people than we, would never have been able to understand that all these apparently unrelated events really formed one related series. Only Mordechai, with the benefit of the Holy Spirit at his level (for not all levels of Holy Spirit are equal), was able to discern the unity underlying these events.
Mordechai had forbidden the Jews to attend the banquet of Achashverosh with which the Megillah opens. This is explained in Midrash Megillat Ester, “‘At the completion of these days’ (Ester 1:5)—he (Mordechai) said to them, ‘Do not go. . .so that the Adversary shall not have occasion to accuse you’; but they did not listen to him.” (See also Megillah l2a.) There were certainly many who must have argued against him, saying that this was a matter of life and death; an irresponsible king like Achashverosh might well decide to kill all Israel (G-d forbid) if he were to see that representatives of every nation attended the feast celebrating the third anniversary of his accession, while not a single Jew deigned to appear. For this reason they refused to obey Mordechai’s command and they went to the banquet. Nothing bad happened to them as a result.
Nine years later (in the twelfth year of Achashverosh), when Haman had been elevated to the highest position in the state and had issued orders that all should bow down to him—and our Rabbis explain (Sanhedrin 61b) that there was no real question of idolatry involved, only a rather far-fetched fear that it might “look like” idolatry—Mordechai refused to bow down.
There were many Jews who protested that he was endangering the lives of all Israel because of excessive personal piety, as is made clear in Aggadat Ester (3:2): “Israel said to him (Mordechai): ‘You should know that you will bring about our death by the sword of that wicked one (Haman).’ But he replied to them: ‘What then, should I bow down to an idol?’ and he refused to accept their words.”
And immediately after this, everything happened exactly as Mordechai’s opponents had feared: an edict was issued by Haman decreeing the destruction of all the Jews. If we had been there what would we have said? What was the “cause” of the decree? Was it Mordechai’s obstinacy in a matter affecting the safety of Klal Yisrael? Or was it that nine years previously some people had ruled leniently and—for the best of motives—disobeyed a rabbinical injunction forbidding them to partake of Achashverosh’s banquet, their motive having been to avoid endangering the lives of Klal Yisrael? We should certainly have said that we could see with our own eyes that it was Mordechai’s action that had caused Haman to get angry and decree the destruction of all the Jews, and how can anyone deny the evidence of his own eyes? But the truth was otherwise. What appeared to be the indisputable evidence of the senses was in fact an illusion created by the Yetzer Hara (the evil inclination); the true cause was the sin committed nine years earlier. (It may be that Mordechai’s decision to endanger himself for something which was no more than a possibility of an appearance of idolatry, and an unlikely one at that, was taken in response to the needs of the time—to impress on the people the gravity of any contact with idolatry. In this way he would correct the mistake they had made earlier on the occasion of the banquet, when they had taken lightly the prohibition against non-Jewish wine, which is itself connected with the prohibition of idolatry. Moreover, the Gemara suggests that the reason for the decree of annihilation was that they had bowed down to the image in the time of Nevuchadnetzar although they had done it only for outward show. So by this act [refusing to bow down even in a case where according to the halacha it was permitted] Mordechai was actually protecting them [in a spiritual sense, by endeavoring to redress the balance].) But the Yetzer Hara enticed them with the strongest of all arguments —”the evidence of their own eyes”; and this was why the attribute of justice won the day and the decree was promulgated. But as soon as this happened they revised their opinions and admitted the truth.They might well have retained their former views and taken vengeance on Mordechai as a traitor to his people, but instead of this they all followed him and responded to his call for repentance.
The fact that Esther, whom they knew to be a close relative of Mordechai, chose just this hour of terrible danger to her people to show friendship to the archenemy Haman by inviting him twice to a private banquet, would tend to reinforce the arguments of Satan that they should no longer listen to Mordechai. But they had returned to G-d in complete repentance and no longer listened to the Yetzer Hara. On the contrary, they joined with Mordechai in fasting and prayer and in repentance for the sin they had committed by following the illusion of the “the evidence of the senses”; and then the miracle happened; then they were saved.
From here we can learn the answer to the question of what brings about murderous decrees upon Israel: the ”mistakes” of the great Torah authorities of the generations, or our own willingness to listen to the wiles of the Satan and the illusory “evidence” he parades before our eyes, so that we lose our faith in the Sages. And if the disaster comes and the destruction spreads, G-d forbid, this only shows that people have not repented; on the contrary, they still deny their teachers.
Our Rabbis say that all punishment commences with the tsaddikim (the righteous ones), for they are punished for the sins of the generation. (There are clear reasons for this, but it would take too long to explain it here; perhaps on another occasion.) But if even this does not lead to repentance, a still greater desecration of G-d’s name is involved. Rashi says in Yoma (86a) that desecration results from the very facts of the destruction of the righteous and the exile of Israel, for everyone says, “What did their righteousness avail them? See how misfortune overtakes even the pious and the wise!” Such is the way of all those who move away from the truth; they love to show “by the evidence of the senses” that the tsaddikim perish in their righteousness.They could have pointed to Mordechai, too, as one whose excessive piety caused his downfall—but they did teshuvah (repentance). It is the way of the nations to argue that “these are the people of Hashem” and nevertheless “they have left his land” (Yechezkel 36:20), but the way of Klal Yisrael is to return to Hashem, to admit the truth and to abandon the illusions of “evidence” presented by the Yetzer Hara to induce one to deny one’s Teachers.
Lack of self-effacement towards our Rabbis is the root of all sin and the beginning of all destruction, G-d forbid. All merits are as nothing compared with that root of spiritual progress—faith in the Sages.
There would seem to be a mighty chiluk between today and the nidun before Rav Dessler. The gedolim of previous generations were saintly men even if they had erred at times. Today's Moetzes unfortunately is not made up of our greatest rabbonim. It is rather a political show & tell arranged by baal habatim. The Moetzes is criticized all the time, not just by Brisk, but by greater rabbonim or those on par with them. Furthermore, I don't think that even Avi Shafran would have the gall to cast Margulies as a pious man.
Shtayt: "Verotzuy lerov echav", zogt Rashi, "lo kol echav." The Sanhedrin was poresh from him for getting too involved in the government. Vos meint? R' Avrohom Kalmanowitz said on himself that he nebich became a Mordechai. He looked out the window and saw Klal Yisroel needed hatzola so he got involved but if he hadn't been mafsik from learning, der Eybishter would have sent another shaliach. Like Mordechai & Rav Kalmanowitz before him, UOJ looked out the window and decided to save Klal Yisroel from it's enemies like Kolko & Margo and like the earlier gedolim he is taking heat for it.
I won't argue on Brisker. The first siyum Hashas at Madison Sq Gardens featured the Agudah's musical chair arrangement. 26 year old Chassidishe rabbonim were parked at the front to appease various groups and zekeinim like R' Nosson Wachtfogel got shtupped in the back. This is pretty much the sad state of the heintigge "Council of Torah Sages".
Rav Dessler's letter has no application to today's current events. We have no g'dolim today. The best we can do is to form a partnership of intelligent rabbis and genuine communal leaders.
I'll be so bold as to say that anyone who disagrees is a pious fool.

Seriously though, a Moslem who led a good life came to heaven,where he was asked if there was anything he'd like,since he was so decent on earth.He said "yes,I'd like to meet the prophet Mohammed.".When he was told that Mohammed was "way up" there and quite busy,he replied,"Well,I expected as much.Nevertheless,I am willing to wait."They finally sent him to the penthouse,where he knocked on the door and to his surprise,Moses answered and said,"Can I help you,my son"?.The Moslem replied ,"Yes,I'd like to meet Mohammed."Moshe told him that Mohammed was quite busy,but that he could wait if he wanted.When Moses asked the man if there was something he'd like while waiting,the Moslem said ,"Yes,I'd like a coke." Moses then called out to the kitchen,"Hey Mohammed,two cokes!"
The jewish press is a rag. It never reports any investigative news about Torah Temimah. I wish someone would check out the Rebbes at Torah Temimah. One of their Rebbes teaching young children is covering up his own son's sexual molestation by family members and his son's identity crisis. This Rebbe is dictatorial and verbally abusive and yet he is teaching young children and counseling them as a Rebbe. The school knows about him and as usual does nothing. How can he help children who have been abused when he covers up the abuse within his own family and tells his son to do teshuvah.
Kudos to Un-Orthodox Jew. Parents from Torah Tememah should be thanking you for your investigative skills. Keep on seeking the truth about the Rebbes who work there and what goes on in their families. The ones who you think have yichus are just scumbags.Check out a Rebbe who teaches young children and has covered up the abuse of his son and caused his son's mental breakdown.
