The Insane Borough Park Jew And Their Double Life!

Great Summer Reading:

SUMMER 2012 BULLETIN TO WIVES IN THE CATSKILL MOUNTAINS!

The UOJ Classics:

I am addressing this blog to the yeshivas, the rebbes and particularly to the rosh yeshivas that produced this human tinaf. Let us take a good look what you guys did to Klal Yisroel over the last fifty years or so. You have transmitted your misery, and your "fake frum" behavior to generations. The proof is in the final product that you guys produced, and it aint pretty. If you want to see the biggest , messed up , miserable Jew that walks on this planet, let's go and take a look inside the head and life of a Boro Parker.(Many Flatbush guys included)

Typically, they dress in dark colors, and speak a yiddishized English. Their kids go to Charedi yeshivas, and the boys wear payos. They walk the walk and talk the talk. They live for one reason only, which is to knock their neighbors eyes out with their worldly possessions. They generally spend their summers in the Catskills. There is a definite sub-class of Boro Parker, the guys without money. They suffer terribly, because they are desperately trying to keep up with the Kohns, and are in debt up to their eyeballs. They are caught with their shiny pants down, at every turn. They have to take the fancy cruises and vacations, but can't afford the tuitions.

They have their special "tuition suits", when they beg for a scholarship. They drag out the suit and hat from their bar-mitzvah, and head on down to the yeshiva with their dignity in their tuchis. Most of these guys would rather be dead. They have bitchy wives and in-laws, no matter what this putz does, it is not good enough for them. This schmuck goes to sleep every night hoping that he does not wake up in the morning. He has more kids then he ever wanted, but you can't be a member in this bozo club unless you have more than five kids. This suffering idiot works his ass off every day just to survive. His rebbe never said this was in store for him. He gives away tzedaka he doesn't have, the thieves that get the money are better off than he is. He can't permit himself to stop and think," what the hell is going on"?, if he does, he's totally gone.

This poor slob, takes the subway to work, and pretends all is well. He goes through the motions of being frum, but in his heart he hates every single shukle in shul, every parlor meeting for shnorrer mosdos, every single person that ever led him along this path. This "drekfresser "has not had a bright day in his life. He grays early, if he is not already bald. He is overweight, and his wardrobe smells like crap. He forces himself to get to shul, and preaches to his kids the same nonsense that he was fed. Everything his rebbe or rosh yeshiva ever told him , he discovered is full of shit. He walks around with a perpetual smile, but he is ready to kill someone at the drop of a black hat. A typical fight with his wife winds up with her screaming at him, "shit zulsts du essen". And that he does! Big time! His kids bleed him to death for money he does not have. If his kids are married, chances are he is supporting some dumb , fat , retarded behaima doing squat in a kollel somewhere. He's screwed and has no idea what to do about it.

Then there are the ten percent of Borough Parkers who have money, or access to it. They are in business stealing their brains out. Whatever they do is crooked. Many have done jail time, especially the guys in nursing homes, jewelry, trucking and government programs administration. The lawyers among them, are gangsters. They don't need a license to lie and hurt people, but they went to school to get one anyway. Many of them sport beards and payos. They believe that they are geniuses, and they let everyone they come in contact with, know it. They are NOT frum at all, they go to strip clubs, and watch pornography. In the summer time, and whenever, they are screwing around on their wives, who are in the Catskills.

They shtup their maids from South America and just about anything that moves, many have sexually transmitted diseases. Some have contracted the AIDS virus from the zonas they frequented. A typical Shabbos in the mountains includes wearing the bekishes, shtreimels or if they are a bit more modern, just plain Armani black suits and hats. OK, comes motzei Shabbos, off with the black garb. Grease back those payos, curl up their beards, pull out that leather yarmulke, and let it rip. No hotel, gambling casino or show is off limits to these chayas. Back home they daven in some shtibel, where the fat slob behaima at the front shtender is a bigger idiot than they can possibly imagine. This shmuck has no clue what he would do if for some reason he pissed off the "gvir."

So, he kishes tuchis like it was a bank book, a certificate of deposit, or a zona. People reading this must be saying that I'm nuts. OK, let's get real. In your heart of hearts you know I am right. If you live in Brooklyn, take a good look at the guys you interface with. Read the newspapers. Check court records. Check out the supermarkets and see how many shaina Yiden are using food stamps. Visit some prisons, see how many guys are there that would never daven without a gartel.

Speak to pediatricians that you may have as friends or family, find out how many babies are being born with drug addictions and sexually transmitted diseases. No, not from the baalei tshuvas you miserable slobs, but from the yeshiva and chassidishe communities. Speak to marriage therapists that you may have as friends or family, ask them what percentage of marriages are being destroyed because the yeshivishe/chassidishe husband is banging anything that moves.

When your home is burglarized, don't even bother going to the cops looking for your silver and jewelry, just take a stroll down Thirteenth Avenue, they will be on full display at the silver and jewelry stores, right there in the window. On a TV talk show recently, hookers described these guys down to their filthy talis koton.(Can't leave home without it.)

It's not one or two guys, this is symptomatic of a tradition and a culture that failed miserably. You know why?

NO YIRAS SHOMAYIM ! NOBODY TO LEARN IT FROM!

Sub-consciously or consciously, they never bought the manure the fertilizer salesmen sold them. They trudged along the scam yeshiva system that everyone seemingly bought into, only to grow old and realize they've been screwed over. The yeshivas and the guys heading it, they have come to realize, are phony bastards. They will gouge the eyes out of your head, for a buck or less. Who is going to teach them to fear G-d, if these guys' God is money? They could not give a cholent bone that has been sucked dry, about you. In matter of fact, if you don't give them money, they despise you. They don't care if you are a cross-dresser or a tuchis - shtupper , as long as you are giving up the gelt. When was the last time you saw a" poor guy" being honored at a dinner?

WHEN HE'S DEAD AND HIS KIDS - IF THEY HAVE MONEY - ARE NAMING A BUILDING AFTER HIM.

Look at some of the names on the yeshiva buildings. The biggest chazer fressers , philanderers and thieves in the neighborhood. I'M NOT KIDDING, TAKE A LOOK!!! GET OFF YOUR FAT TUCHIS AND TAKE A LOOK.

Yes, there are a few good guys, even an honest rotten corpse produces worms. I kid you not, if you let these yeshivas do what they have been doing, there will not be a viable Jewish community in fifty years or less. There may be people who will dress in black, but Judaism and its beauty can not perpetuate itself, when the so called leaders are charlatans and hucksters.

CREATE A VAAD OF HONEST PEOPLE TO MONITOR AND AUDIT THE MOSDOS!

ARE YOU AFRAID OF WHAT YOU MAY FIND? GO AHEAD, I CHALLENGE YOU. YOU KNOW THEY ARE STEALING LIKE BANDITS. THIS IS YOUR LIVES THAT THEY ARE MESSING WITH. GIVE YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS THE CHANCE YOU DID NOT GET! THROW THESE BUMS AND THE GEDOIIILIM OUT, AND HAVE YOUR CHILDREN BE TAUGHT AND LED BY YIREI HASHEM, NOT THESE MAMZEIRIM!

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE IF YOU REALLY HAVE THE GUTS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Well UOJ
Now you talk business, strategy, plan, etc.
I am an outsider, so I cannot form this Vaad. Nobody else would as well because everybody except of you is afraid and even you (although we probably know who you are, thanks to Tuvya) are hiding behind your underground name.
Go ahead, form a Vaad! No, form a lot of Vaadim in all the frum communities (maybe even the OU controled MO communities). Lead us and we would go with you

my pediatrician tells me that there are
NO sexually transmitted diseases among the Jewish children in his practice!!!
NONE AT ALL !!!!

Who said re-runs are stale.

This one is a Classic, required reading,
and bulls-eye on target.

Anonymous said...

You exaggerate by a factor of a 100.End of story.

Anonymous said...

If your pediatrician is in a frum neighborhood he probably won't see any such cases because people that know they have a problem go elsewhere for diagnosis and treatment. Somewhere where there are no heimisher Yidden to raise eyebrows. There are chassidisher lowlives for instance who bring home STDs from zonos that they patronize and infect their families. Some of these chusids have a preference for kushim that they pick up in certain low income neighborhoods. If you have the right connections in Manhattan hospitals you could verify cases of chassidisher patients with the worst machala of all.

Anonymous said...

UOJ, it's not fair to blame the roshei yeshiva in all cases. Most of these issues start in the home and even in the 1960s when the true gedolim were still around in decent numbers, the worst things imaginable went on in the dorms of Torah Vodaath and other yeshivos.

Does anyone know anything about arms dealers who sit on the OU board of governors?

check out http://exposemolesters.blogspot.com/ for a copy of Kolko's indictment.
It just seems that the people running the the show are f#@ked up -but how can we start from scratch -they already have all the money, connections and power to screw us over and keep us silent -the only people escaping from their control [and by this i mean not having to be involved in such a society where ones freinds are under their control- for what good is it if I dont care about the corrupt "leaders" and do my thing if all my friends are still being controlled] are the ones who go off the derech or join MO communities [and I'm not in any way denigrating them - its just that it wasnt how i was raised and isnt my cup of tea]. How can we change the system and tell the establishment to F$^K off

Anonymous said...

How can we get the the establishment to understand that we want them die and run far away because we the people have awoken from our slumber and are coming after them with a vengence. To whom this applies, and you know who are you are -this is your warning -leave and apologize while you can because once you're exposed you will have no where to turn because we will never stop hunting you

Anonymous said...

So your pediatrician has treated every member of the Jewish community? Anyway, UOJ did not say that children have STDs. The adult lowlives who mess around with prostitutes and who go to the Russian and Chinese whores for special massages....there are probably plenty of those with genital herpes, etc.

Anonymous said...

UOJ

Undoubtedly, where there is smoke there is fire.
But I think you might be sewing a bit of panic when you imply that STD is rampant within the community.
Based upon your sources how many factual cases are there of Chareidim patronizing prostitutes? 10, 100, 1000?
The rov Hamon Am in this particular area are still, I fervently hope, prper in their conduct. A shvartze zoine I think does not have alot of credibility in my eyes. Although it is probably true that there some Chareidim rent her services.

I agree with everything you wrote. I am not equipped to comment on sexually transmitted diseases but one MD's experience does not establish fact, it may be that his clientele is better than others or that he is less carefull in testing where there are no symptoms. When I was single my internist ran VDRL tests on every checkup, he stopped when I got married. I can not imagine that I am at risk since marriage but as a polocy he probably should still test because you never know with people, even Feiner Yidden.

What are we doing about convicted sex offender Rabbi Alan Horowitz

I want to bring this to everyone's attention. I personally feel we are all to blame for the number of times rabbi Horowitz has offended children. He's now listed on the America's Most Wanted list. You can read about it here: http://jewishsurvivors.blogspot.com/2007/01/rabbi-and-child-psychiatristrabbi-alan.html

Way out of line and a gross exaggeration.

Yes, there are elements within the community that are accurately described in your piece but they are a minority. You do your cause a disservice when you paint with so broad a brush.

I never said EVERY person in Boro Park is guilty of this behavior, as I never said that EVERY rebbe in a yeshiva is a sexual predator.

It's much more prevalent than you think however.

Show me the money

From an article that appeared a few days ago on Ynet:

How much would you pay for a groom?

The ultra-Orthodox world is in uproar, this time it’s not because of gays: Parents of unmarried young women are refusing to pay for fancy apartments, five-star weddings in order to get a groom from prestigious yeshiva.
Chaim Levinson
Published: 01.14.07, 20:19

...A daughter’s wedding should be one of the happiest events in a parent’s life, but it’s become a nightmare because sought-after grooms are demanding that the bride’s parents buy the couple an apartment, and preferably in a desirable location. “It’s a known thing in our community that you have to give the whole package to get a good groom, that is, to pay for the entire wedding and buy an apartment and furniture," Says A. “My two older daughters have husbands from good yeshivas, and each of them got two thirds of an apartment from me. "I spent my entire savings on that, I took a second mortgage and loans. Now I need to buy at least half an apartment for my third daughter, and I have no money. My daughter wanted a God-fearing guy, not a guy who works (as opposed to studying fulltime in yeshiva). That’s a problem. How will I pay back more loans? And what will remain for my younger daughters?”

...Among the Lithuanians the price is based on how smart and how good a student the groom is. Among the Hassidim, the price is based on the groom’s family’s prestige. When families started going bankrupt there was an outcry against the heads of yeshivas and the grooms who make excessive demands.

...In order to finance all of this, parents take out many loans and insane mortgages. The loans have to be paid back, and the interest is high, so the parents make use of free loan societies. But even they have to be paid back, so the parents take more loans from other free loan societies. Another solution is to go to the U.S. or Britain and ask for money from wealthy Jews. Before the wedding the terms of the match are negotiated. The ultra-Orthodox Bakehillah newspaper, which writes a lot on this issue, has published the price list for a groom. For a prodigy in a prestigious yeshiva such as Kol Torah or Hevron in Jerusalem, Or Yisrael in Petach Tikvah or Bet Matityahu in Bnei Brak, you have to pay for the whole package.

...“Sometimes you have several offers, and the money the family offers is definitely a significant factor in the decision because then you can sit in yeshiva and study the way you ought to,” says D., a student in a prestigious Jerusalem yeshiva. It’s a market thing, supply and demand. Of course you have to pay for a high-quality groom. At our yeshiva we’re the elite, and people are prepared to pay a lot for a groom.”
Why do the bride’s parents have to take a loan in order to pay for your apartment?
“It’s painful to see parents taking loans, but in order to sit and study in a yeshiva you need funding. You can’t buy an apartment on a yeshiva student’s salary. That’s why the parents need to take money. It’s a wheel that can’t be stopped.”

*******************************************
My comments:

If you thought arranged marriages and dowries went out with the dark ages, you're wrong. The practice is still alive and well in the cheredi communities, and it's still barbaric and ridiculous.

It also explains the extremely high incidence of wife and child abuse, because these young men have no real love or attachment to their wives or offspring - it's clear from the above quote that these young men have been brainwashed by their cult to only value sitting in yeshiva all day. They have no concept of any responsibility to support their family, or even take their family's needs into any sort of consideration. Their world is selfish and lazy, and entirely ego-centered. The consequences of their actions on others means nothing to them. Their inflated sense of entitlement and superiority is dangerous and they have an entirely unreal and imaginary idea of how the world really works.

The question is whether or not this wheel can, in fact, be stopped - and it can. It is clear that this needs to be a grass roots rebellion, however, since the article goes on to describe how the rosh yeshivas actually command the young men to keep doing this irresponsible practice because it increases the prestige of them and their yeshivas. It makes it appear that all their students are wealthy and successful - when they're not. It's false advertising. The rabbis want it to look to outsiders that God has blessed them and their students for wasting their lives sitting on their rear-ends doing nothing to contribute to the community's economy or their own family's welfare. This practice makes it appear that they are living the way God wants them to and has taken care of all their needs.

But God has done no such thing. God has not endorsed or approved their actions, and their facade of success comes from extortion, plain and simple. This cancer eats at the young men and their marriages, because nothing based on lies and deceit has a foundation that can be built upon. When their marriages and financial situations fail to meet their unrealistic expectations, their egos and inflated sense of entitlement drives them to turn to violence, or to adultery, drugs, porn, and whatever other diversion from their miserable, unfulfilled lives they can find.

One father above I think now realizes the error of his ways when he taught his daughters that men with market-rate employment and careers were not the types of husbands that they should aspire to wed. But it's too late, of course. Now if he withdraws support for yeshiva-student grooms for his other daughters, he will be accused of falling from the faith and spreading "un-orthodox" heresy. It's a trap from which he now cannot extricate himself without a major upheaval of his life and community. And if he tries, the result will be ostracization, threats, and even violence against him and his family, because the rabbis brook no dissent or competing ideas. The fact that the parents cannot afford this medieval and barbaric custom of buying a marriage for their daughters does not matter. The Rabbis benefit from the money these poor parents are having to fork over, so there's no chance they will willingly give it up.

So the only way this is going to stop is when parents tell their daughters matter-of-factly the economic realities of life, and stop spreading the lie that God approves of and blesses a man who refuses to support his family. The only way this is going to stop is when parents start insisting on young men with a job for their daughters. The only way this is going to stop is when the orthodox society realizes it is the duty of both sets of parents to equally support young families, and not just the bride's side of the family. And if the grooms and their parents will not conform to these requirements, then let them remain unmarried.

And last but not least, how rich your parents are is not, and has never been, the basis of a successful marriage relationship. That comes only from mutual respect and trust, which grows to love when consideration and devotion are demonstrated by both parties. Without this real and enduring basis for a relationship, a marriage will never, ever be fulfilling. And when a man gleefully impoverishes his bride's family and gives no consideration whatsoever to his wife and children's welfare and support, no one is ever going to respect him, especially not his wife - even if he ends up being the greatest scholar of his generation, which frankly, I don't see any real danger of that coming from modern yeshivas.

As long as the cheredi worship money more than God's commandments (which Pirkei Avos clearly shows being for a man to learn a trade and earn a living) then the yeshiva culture is not just flawed but perverted and disgusting. Godly marriages cannot happen in this culture. If you want God's blessing on your life, you will never find it here, class. This culture is sick beyond repair.

There is a method to my madness. I posted this thread now setting up my question:

Is there any more deviant behavior now, among Jews, after the Internet explosion or has the society at large always affected those with proclivities
to aberrant behavior?

Please respond! I really want to get a concensus on this issue.

My feeling is that although certain materials are perhaps readily available through "different" channels, the percentages are no greater.

UOJ,

I've been busy trying to actually make a living so I haven't been spending much time on the blogs.

It's good to see that you are back posting and it's also nice that you opened up the comments. Your chevra need a place to compare notes and vent so we don't explode with indignation.

As for your question, at the turn of the 20th century, about 100 years ago, about half of the women arrested for prostitution in NYC were Jews. Many women and families were abandoned by husbands and fathers (as dramatized in the fictional film, Hester Street).

Regarding Jews patronizing prostitutes, I'm quite sure that the following joke predates the internet.

It was Friday night in the shtetl and a line of women was forming at the mikva. The rabbi's wife had to dip as well but the rabbi was impatient, and she desired him too, so she went up to the last woman in line and said,

"Excuse me. I'm the rebbitzen and the rav is waiting for me."

The woman in line graciously allowed the rebbitzen to take her place.

The rabbis wife continued to work her way to the front of the line with the same statement,

"Excuse me. I'm the rebbitzen and the rav is waiting for me."

And it worked

Until she got to the woman at the head of the line,

"Excuse me. I'm the rebbitzen and the rav is waiting for me."

The woman replied,

"Well, excuse me, but I'm Becky the nafka and the whole town is waiting for me!"

Keep up the good work, UOJ, and don't let the mamzerim grind you down.

Thanks for the gracious comments welcoming me back.

This is a crazy time of the year for me. I have to work the Detroit and Chicago auto shows for my automotive web sites (plus press kits and swag I can sell to collectors), my Infidel Attire is starting to take off (and my 'walk in' Judaica embroidery business has increased as well), and I'm exploring the possibility of importing Chinese or Indian cars to Israel so I'm pressed for time.

That being said, when I have time to hang around online, I'm sure that Rav Belsky would rather I spend it here than on Adult Friend Finder.

How many chassidishe yeshivos still pay salaries in food stamps? It has to be less & less since the federal sting on 16th Ave when they caught transactions at grocery stores of non-food or unapproved items. It's pathetic how women dressed to kill in designer outfits try to shake down the counter guy at the pizza store to take payment in food stamps. Of course many women are ashamed and send their ferd husbands food shopping.

Perhaps my form of self-deprecatory humor is a little too subtle for some.

But if you're going to quote Hizzoner, the true HNIC (and yes, he had a hat in his office embroidered with that acronym, though HMFIC would have done just as well), at least quote him accurately:

"Get the F%^k out of my office."

And just to tweak your nose, I didn't have any dinner last night. Trying to lose some weight I put on - it's hard to cycle in Michigan in the winter. Though I did have a bedtime snack of a nice sandwich of some chicken fliggles and chalah (Zeman's, not homemade).

Oh, and my daughter tells me that myspace.com is passe. All the grownup kids hang out on Facebook these days.

Another segment in our series of prevailing attitudes that facilitate abuse.

I do not believe in supporting the Jewish Press who support Tendler, Kolko and corrupt batei din. There was a reason I needed to buy a copy this week.

A giyores, only identified as Chava, wrote a letter to the editor describing how she has been mistreated by members of the community. I was saddened to read this outpouring of grief.

Chava's letter reminded me of an episode I am familiar with in a NY neighborhood that I will not identify. One family that is truly crazy and is the embodiment of many insanities that UOJ rails against, was harassing another family. The crazies are far from the upper crust. They epitomize shleppers, zhlobs and weirdos in every sense. They are exceedingly cheap but will resort to any silly and/or dishonest ploy to underwrite the cost of their large family & the yeshivishe lifestyle they pursue. One example of their cheapness is ripping off the stamp from an invitation reply card & dropping it in your mailbox. One example of their dishonesty is when they get a parking or garbage ticket, they try to claim it's a neighbor's fault and shake them down for the money. They are nudniks who never take no for an answer. There are much funnier examples I could give but I would risk IDing the victims. The wife in the victimized family is a giyores. It's hard to tell because she appears to be a regular haymishe woman. The victims approached a rosh yeshiva for assistance. The rosh yeshiva forbade summoning the authorities, even though the crazies behavior started becoming more & more criminal in nature. I'm talking about felonies. When the crazies graduated to crimes bordering on physical assault, the victims began wondering what might be wrong with the rosh yeshiva. The crazies had brainwashed their entire family, from the adults to the 5 year old, that the victims are some kind of demons. What started all this is so immature & pathetic that a doctor aware of the situation has diagnosed the entire family of crazies as suffering from mental illness.

The straw that broke the camel's back was an adult child of the crazies violently assaulting the infant child of the victims. The victims felt they had no choice but to call 911. Because of initial confusion as to what exactly happened, the responding officers said they could only write a summons ticket and suggested that the victims pursue more serious charges with the DA or the courts. The victims finally had it with the spineless rosh yeshiva and turned to other rabbonim who proved to be much more helpful. One of these rabbonim even suggested having the crazies thrown in jail, but there were complications. The crazies have the backing of a corrupt beis din. Friends of the victims convinced them that they should be frightened of pashkevillim that would go up all over town if they dealt with the criminals. Meanwhile, the rosh yeshiva was offended that the victims no longer wanted his advice and angrily threw around such terms as "kafuy tov." A top Ivy lawyer who is a frum Jew and yodea sefer felt that the fact that the story escalated out of control is squarely the fault of the rosh yeshiva who had the power to come down hard on the crazies.

The poor giyores, disgusted by this sick display from the dregs of our society, started having doubts about her commitment. Experts in gerus were consulted who said that extreme circumstances can confuse even the purest of gerei tzedek. After suffering much abuse that is hard to describe or even believe, the woman, Hashem yishmera, suffered a nervous breakdown. I'm not sure if it would make any difference to the animal crazies that being meaneh a ger scores the highest sum of aveiros in kol haTorah kulah. It's a machlokes haposkim if it is 35 or 45 aveiros per incident. The Achronim explain that, unlike a born Jew who has parents and siblings in most cases, a ger does not have this family network to turn to for comfort so Hashem uses this as midah keneged midah of their anguish. This also puts the rosh yeshiva's inaction in a whole new light. The crazies by the way have been mentioned on these pages before or have at least been alluded to regarding some of their better known antics. What is not known, even to most people aware of the suffering giyores, is that before any strife had even erupted, the victims had approached the rosh yeshiva after they witnessed the crazies abusing their own children (physically & emotionally). They floated the question of calling the police but the rosh yeshiva did not give them a straight answer. The crazies put on a show of involvement with various chesed organizations and Mrs. Crazy is in a position of access to children that she could possibly abuse, just like she has her own flesh & blood.

Is this what the Klal has sunk to, that the crazies can act with impunity? And is there a manhig in our times that has a spine?

I see here and elsewhere that Roshei Yeshiva alegedly demand that their students should demand more money in order to preserve the Yeshiva's prestiege.
Is that a matter of fact or is it a libel?
If this is indeed a matter of fact then the names and hard evidence for those actions must be publicized the same publicizing acts of child molestation. So such people could be, like Margo, under threat of law suits, either civil, or maybe even criminal because such actions may fall under the definition of racketeering. The described actions are so close to what racketeering is, so that it might require only a small mistake on their side to actually be that. And then all hell should go loose!

'I Know Who My Comrades Are'
China plays cat-and-mouse with the Internet.

Agudath Israel Officials arrive on a fact finding mission.

BY EMILY PARKER
Saturday, January 27, 2007

Out of China this week came two telling news items. One is that Internet users hit 137 million, putting them on track to surpass their U.S. counterparts in a couple of years. The other is President Hu Jintao's plea that officials further regulate the Web and "actively and creatively nurture a healthy online culture."

At a photo op after a closed door meeting, Rabbi Avi Shafran of the Agudah and Mr. Jintao lambasted UOJ and said that censorship of the internet is for the good of the people. Sources tell the Wall St Journal that negotiations are underway to include Latin American strongmen Fidel Castro & Hugo Chavez in the initiative and that Rabbi Shafran is to travel there next week. Mr. Jintao presented Rabbi Shafran with a dusty hat, the customary headgear in the Manchurian region.

There you have it: The Chinese cat-and-mouse game. This all raises an old, unsettling question of whether the spread of the Internet will actually help lead to China's democratization. Sure, the Web has pried open doors to free speech and information on the mainland. But if Beijing is always just a few paces behind, dispatching the censors to slam those doors shut--then ultimately, does the Internet really matter?

Of course it does, optimists might argue. Just imagine what China would look like if its pragmatic, development-minded leaders had kept the Internet out. Mainlanders would not have been able to sign online petitions, read as many outside news reports, write blogs, and post their comments on "sensitive" topics. More generally, think in terms of that Milton Friedman-esque link between economic and political liberty. With forces like the Internet ushering in development and commercial opportunities, can political freedom really be that far behind?

Some of those optimists may have underestimated Beijing; or at least its willingness to unleash tens of thousands of Internet police--on top of firewalls and the like--to keep the Web in check.

Some of these "netizens" have skillfully outwitted the censors by purposely miswriting terms or using proxy servers. Their words dance above the Communist Party line--alluding to, but failing to directly address--hot-button topics. They have created a web in the true sense of the word: Even if an individual site is taken down, another will just spring up in its place. Yet the fact remains: Any truly controversial piece of news or opinion would likely be too coded--or too quickly deleted--to reach the majority of Chinese.

This all brings us back to the original question. If words are written, but nobody gets to read them, will they make a difference? Beijing's censorship of language is a serious obstacle to democratization, but it would be a mistake to overemphasize this point. In China, the Internet has already set into motion a core component of democratic consciousness. I know who my comrades are--those words can easily be deleted. The realization behind them can not.

As long as I am talking about the very interesting sefer Ma’aneh
Eliyahu [volume of teshuvot by Gaon R. Eliyahu Rabinowitz-Teomim, the
Aderet] let me also call attention to something in it that is relevant to
what is in the news today. I refer to the problem of rabbis covering up
cases of sexual abuse. In no. 32 the Aderet deals with a case where a
girl was raped by two young Jewish men. Her family wanted to report this
to the police, so that the rapists would receive a fitting punishment.
The Aderet writes:

We see from this that the practice of covering up these sorts of things
is hardly a recent phenomenon.

In the time of the Aderes you were able to get away in many locales with vigilante justice. If that was a viable option, then this would not be an early example of covering up crimes. Something that small people who wear the cloak of greatness are guilty of.

Agudah questions X-rays

Agudath Israel of America raised concerns with U.S. authorities about X-ray security machines.
In a release Wednesday, the Orthodox organization said it was not satisfied with Department of Homeland Security assurances that “cloaking” software made the images less explicit.

“For many passengers, however, the religiously observant among them, ‘less explicit’ may fall far short of an acceptable standard of modesty,” Agudah said.

It said the department was demonstrating a willingness to cooperate, noting that the Transportation Security Administration several years ago agreed to provide separate rooms for searches involving the removal of wigs or hats out of respect for the modesty of religious travelers.

"the crazies abusing their own children (physically & emotionally)."

Does anyone know if this is illegal as perhaps abuse / abandonment?

The crazy mother took her screaming 4 year old child, naked save for a diaper, and threw her as a punishment into an unheated, freezing stairwell that is disgustingly filthy and locked the door back into the house. The only reason why the child's suffering was not prolonged was due to neighbors running to the scene who heard everything that happened and were worried that the child was injured while being flung like a rag doll. The oldest daughter quickly tipped off the mother, who went running to retrieve the child, while feigning ignorance as to why the child was screaming and began showering her with fake calls of "shayfella" and kisses worthy of a reptile.

The child in the stairwell is relatively lucky. There is another young child in this family who is constantly bullied and verbally abused by the other children with the encouragement of the mother. The mother has even been heard yelling at the other child, who was all of five years old, from the front porch: "Hey idiot."

These people invite Ohel residents over for Shabbos meals, so they can tell everyone they "do mitzvos" and that's a quote, but it's hard to tell the guests apart from the hosts imo.

Regarding the yeshivas and financial aid, it's up to them to crack down on the "slobs". Having firsthand experience in this area for a number of years, I can tell you we WILL come down on people who's documentation seems questionable. We've also used various *public* records to corroborate suspicious findings when necessary, and DENYING a reduction. Having some people with accounting skills on these committees would go a long way in knocking this out, and making sure people pay their fair share. I'm not a CPA, but you can learn how to "read between the lines".

I'm told that exec direc of Yeshiva of Flatbush has been known to take a drive over to the homes of parents who say they cannot afford tuition. Needless to say, they are told to pay up in full if any of the following are spotted: Imported luxury vehicles, Imported Italian brickwork, etc. This is probably more effective than yeshivos who just ask to review tax returns. YOF is able to filter out the tax cheats too.

Anonymous said...

I assume the yeshivas also have a questionnaire which parents must sign stating that it is accurate (amongst other things). Given our location and representatives on the tuition board, it's a little easier to track who's knocking down the house to build a palace. There are other flags that trigger questions, not all of them ostentatious spending habits. The stories we can tell.....

Found out from people who know the new tenants that the landlords from Hell have found some new suckers to shtup in the illegal apt. The people are very upset that they didn't know their friends were moving in to have an opportunity to warn them. According to public records online, the city inspectors went down twice recently but the landlords wouldn't let them in. The landlords seem to be getting advice from a crooked Flatbush lawyer they know on how to get away with breaking the law. The baalabusta's mother weighs about 400 pounds (not a joke). Maybe they threatened the inspectors with "aggravated flattening."

UOJ, I think you deserve at least one response from your loyal readers. It is my belief that if one has strong desires for arayos or for deviant behavior, there is nothing that will stop him. The internet is surely not the cause for his yetzer hara, it is only a facilitator. In the past, he would have to buy porn magazines or peruse the classifieds of the Village Voice to fulfill his taavos. Today, even if the internet was banned from the frum Jew's home, those that have these inclinations will be running to internet cafes or libraries to access this material.

Many of these pervs are quick to point the finger of blame at the internet. Take for example, the rabbi who was caught with a bag of condoms waiting on a 13 year old girl he had met online. When the cops nailed him, he said that "I got carried away with my computer". Chatting online is one thing, but actually arranging a sexual encounter with a 13 year old and going through with it, cannot be blamed on a computer. It's the yetzer hara of the person and his inability to control it. You cannot blame the actions of Yudi Kolko, Avraham Mondrowitz, Lipa Brenner, et al on the internet, since most of those cases happened before Al Gore invented the internet.

So, in answer to your question, I believe there is no more deviant behavior now, after the internet explosion, than before.

There is a post on www.independentfrumthinker.blogspot.com, regarding this topic. Please see his post and read my comment there.

Paul Mendlowitz said...

Thanks Steve. I agree with his and your thinking on this important topic. Watching 60 Minutes the other evening, the former ceo of The Geek Squad was on. He sold his business to Best Buy. (He had an idea and ran with it and in a short 10 years had 12,000 employees and sold it for mega-millions).

He clearly stated that this is the beginning of the Internet/technological revolution.

So unless we are smart enough to recognize that these advances will only get easier to operate and more sophisticated, all the bans and letter signing will look like a work of fools.(Which it is)

As he says there is something very rotten going on here, we're putting a band-aid on a headache.

UOJ,

R. Heinemann's psak and reversal has been raised on your blog before and I think it's germane to this thread.

The simple truth is that without the internet I'd be destitute. The majority, sometimes the vast majority, of my income is derived online, either from my own sites or on eBay. When I finally set up the Infiidel Attire shopping cart recently, the idea of doing business on Shabbat came to me, but there are so many s'feikas that I went ahead. Besides the issue of when the credit cards are processed, I use Paypal as a merchant and I can't get hard currency in my hands from a transaction for two days. I have customers around the world, and somewhere in the world it isn't Shabbas. I think it's analogous to mail order. If I advertise in a print publication and someone mails me a check on Shabbas and the check is delivered by the USPS on Shabbas, how have I violated Shabbas? Business on the internet is just fancy mail order, an updated Sears Roebuck catalog.

The problem for the gedoyoyoylim, is that once you allow the internet for paranossa reasons, people will have access to bad stuff like free speech and blogs.

Anonymous said...

Anyone have any updates on Colmer? There are many worried people out there.

Paul Mendlowitz said...

Ronnie,

Again, welcome home!

In Heinemann's case/psak, there are multiple issues.

1-He never did his homework. He was outright reckless with his position.
2-He refused to back-off for months after he knew he erred.
3-He was chased after to correct himself and only did, after he was intimidated and cajoled into doing it by threats of going to the media.

Ultimately, he relented, NOT because he wanted to, because he properly assessed the damage if he did not!

So here we have a guy, with no knowledge of the industry, out of his halacha-zone, making psakim that effects people's parnassah, and unwilling to do anything about it until he's shamed into doing it.

This psak, Salomon's "under the carpet/dignity psak, and all the rest, makes one wonder what in the world is going on? Nobody gives a damn! Nobody!

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A man prosecutors said was one of the nation's most prolific child molesters was sentenced Monday to 150 years in prison for abusing two 12-year-old boys.

Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 64, who also had been convicted of sexual assaults in several states over three decades, was sentenced to the maximum term on 11 felony counts of child molestation and one misdemeanor charge of child pornography possession.

Schwartzmiller represented himself during his trial last year but asked for an attorney to represent him during the sentencing phase.

During the nearly three-week trial, prosecutor Steve Fein showed jurors a map of the "places and decades where the defendant has molested young boys." It included an estimated 100 accusers dating to 1969 in eight U.S. states, Mexico and Brazil.

When Schwartzmiller was arrested in June 2005, investigators found a memoir describing abuse, binders full of child pornography and 1,500 notebook pages with headings including "blond boys," "no, but yes boys," and "best of the best, 13 and under."

Schwartzmiller, who acted as his own attorney during his October trial, told jurors that he was innocent and maligned by a society that doesn't accept men who love boys.

During his testimony, Schwartzmiller said the memoir and notebook entries were fiction.

He blamed roommate Frederick Everts — also a convicted child molester — for the child porn. Schwartzmiller also said he could not have molested the two San Jose boys, who are cousins, because he was either at a construction job or bedridden with a bad back at the time.

Although police say Schwartzmiller appears to have spent much of the past three decades years in California, he has also been arrested on child molestation charges in New York, Idaho, Oregon, Arkansas and Washington. He has lived in Nevada, Texas and Washington.

Schwartzmiller has used aliases including Dean Harmon and Dean Miller, authorities said. He apparently gained the trust of victims and parents by working as a home renovation contractor. He didn't register as a sex offender so he did not appear in the "Megan's Law" databases in California or other states, police said.

Police said Schwartzmiller befriended the two San Jose boys with gifts, invited them to his house for video games and movies, and molested them.

Judge Edward Lee said that despite Schwartzmiller's legal savvy in getting some previous charges dismissed, he will spend the rest of his days filing appeals from a prison cell.

"For all that above-average intelligence and charm, I have a couple of faults (with you) — an English teacher might call them tragic faults," Lee said. "You have no empathy for your victims; that's not particularly unusual. And you cannot see yourself as others see you."

Flatbush yenta,

To be fair, many people who approach our school for a reduction have justification to do so. However without going into specifics:

1) we have had several "real estate" situations on a much larger scale that you described (Public records and yes Google helped us out in one case - I HAVE to bite my tongue on that one).
2) Also, many people don't know how to budget and wind up deep in the credit card hole (why can't basic budgeting be part of chosson/kallah classes?).
3)We've unearthed questionable reported income and assets via simple cross checking or followup for more information.
4)"2007 Acuras" do happen. Sometimes this is justified if a parent is a salesperson, has odd hours or commutes to an area not served well by mass transit. Otherwise, it's a red flag.

In 99% of cases, the parents are billed for 100%.

Peanut Gallery,

That has no effect on $$$. If they choose to do that it's up to the principals to take action.

1) The questionnaire is a legal document which has stood up in BD and legal arenas
2) We HAVE removed children from school from parents who refuse to pay their fair share. Usually the threat alone does the trick. Go somewhere else? The target school is not stupid, they should (and occasionally do) call us to find out if the parent owes anything.

It's up to the lay leadership of the schools to go after the shmendrik putzes, rip off their bar-mitzvah suits and make them pay their fair share. Schools should cooperate and share information about "hoppers" You don't need a monitoring committee, just a group of behind-the-scenes people who are dedicated and feel an achraius to their school - and have no interest in being honored at the annual dinner. These are the real askonim, not the Agudists that grace the pages of Coalition.

Similarly, according to Choshen Mishpat siman 306:8, a mechanech like Kolko, Applegrad, Kaufman or Margo can be removed without warning if they are habitually negligent.

Then the Agudah is mechabed Margo to be shaliach tzibbur for Tehillim leinen even though the Or Zarua in siman 112 of hilchos shaliach tzibbur says you may not do so if the person has a bad reputation.

This could be tricky. You have yeshivos that are run by gangsters and vengeful slimeballs so you have to take everything with a large measure of salt.

I know of one yeshiva that has a ridiculous policy that is nothing other than a shakedown packaged as a tuition policy. What is Kolko's Feb 20 court date for? Is this for a new charge involving a minor? So far, 2 minors have come forward. Is this a third?

If a school finds it tricky, it's THEIR fault. Don't come whining to the public then that oy, we need $$$ because they can't be fiscally responsible. I'd love to get ahold of their public filings with the IRS, federal grants etc then go from there.

What would a school gain with "shakedown"? So that some putzes can learn all about people's financial situations and have some juicy gossip? Trust me, reviewing applications is NOT a pleasant task.

Then again, anything is possible in today's world. I don't doubt you at all.

Maybe someone should start a yeshiva tuition blog.

"Maybe someone should start a yeshiva tuition blog."

Why don't you start one & reach out to Elliot Pasik for assistance? It has to be a serious effort with input from the pros before Gil Student or some other "me too" amateur reading this thread plunges into it.

As far as the shakedown, whoever stood to profit was setting an unusually high price tag to maximize their gain. This was at a modern orthodox yeshiva mind you. I'm sure there are others as well.

I believe that at least some members of yeshiva tuition boards are only there because they are yentas. (Maybe "Flatbush yenta" can apply). The same thing applies with many shadchanim who really don't give a hoot about singles. And the same thing applies to assorted idiots who make up the rank & file of various vaadim. I just shake my head when I see the names of well-known losers from yeshiva pop up on lists. I just saw a list last night as a matter of fact from the Agudah's vaad on nidchei aratzos. One guy there that I remember from yeshiva calculated every dumb word that came out of his mouth to show off to whoever was listening.

I know that serious askanim have a demanding job to filter out the cheats and skunks who raise everyone else's tuition while acting like chazirs.

And I wonder how they deal with this in many communities, especially the 5 Towns, where the "house poor" pose a unique challenge. Some vain and hopeless souls plunge every cent they have (and even that they don't have) into an headturning mansion, preferably with a cachet 516 area code. They don't have a cent left for anything else, even furniture, and have to rely on Tomchei Shabbos for food.

R' Yaakov Kaminetzky zl said that redifas hagashmius has become an avoda zara mamash in America. I can only wonder what role YTT had in influencing this chochom haroeh es hanolad.

I wonder if R' Yaakov knew what was going on at the end of his life in YTV. A group of guys, many of them originally from YTV, were known to misbehave at Catskills hotels. Wether it was Shabbos "Knock 'em Up" (Nachamu) at the Concord Hotel or otherwise, there were other kinds of redifus, as in pleasures of the flesh. You could see some scampering around the halls with girls, but the real action was in the form of hanky panky or even orgies in the rooms. Many from this group eventually "settled down" in the 5 Towns. Oh and you still find these guys, some with payos behind their ears dancing with their wives at Manhattan clubs.

There was one more group in YTV that Rav Sekula called the mentchen vos shtayen arum fun der bima. A bunch of lowlives who didn't learn a word, they just gathered around to shmooz about the latest B.S. Rav Sekula finally had enough and warned them that anyone hanging around the bima all day is expelled. Some of them told him to take a hike and went to Brooklyn College full time. The rest sat in their seats. Many from this group are Hungarians who settled into mansions in the Suffern area of Monsey. They daven by Stroli or Rubinstein where there is no rov because that's how they like it. They still stand around the bima over there and every third word to come out of their foul mouths is banned by the FCC. The cutest ones are the ones who transform out of their shtreimels & bekishes after Shabbes and back into their jeans.

A federal grand jury in Brooklyn has begun investigating tax and money-laundering issues involving Morris Talansky, the businessman at the heart of the bribery scandal involving Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, but his lawyer here is asking Israeli authorities to quash it.

Unless that happens, Talansky will not return to Israel for another round of pre-trial questioning by Olmert’s lawyers, according to Talansky’s lawyer, Bradley Simon of Manhattan.

In an Aug. 12 letter to Israeli authorities, Simon wrote: “The Israeli Justice Ministry put [Talansky] in a position where he gave incriminating information and the FBI has now begun serving subpoenas” based upon that testimony.

Among those served with a subpoena, The Jewish Week has learned, was Talansky’s personal accountant, who was told to bring along his client’s tax records.

“Mr. Talansky remains committed to cooperating with Israeli prosecutors,” Simon said in his letter. “We are hopeful that issue can be satisfactorily resolved so that Mr. Talansky can continue to cooperate with your investigation without simultaneously placing himself in jeopardy here in the United States.”

The letter, written to Israel’s state attorney, essentially seeks to convince Israeli authorities to pressure the U.S. to drop the Talansky probe. Simon said he is awaiting a reply.

“It is not my intention to create an international crisis, just to see that one man, my client, is protected,” Simon explained in an interview. “I am not sure what the outcome will be, but I am raising issues of fundamental rights as set forth in the U.S. Constitution.”

Talansky testified in May and again in July and was preparing to return to Israel to be questioned again by Olmert’s lawyers on Aug. 31. But Simon, who said he was only recently hired by the rabbi, stepped in to stop that.

“I feel that his cooperation with the Israeli Justice Ministry has put him in harm’s way and I want them to do right by him if they are going to use him as a critical witness,” Simon said.

During his several days of testimony, Talansky testified that he gave Olmert envelopes stuffed with cash for his political campaigns. He said it totaled more than $150,000 over the course of 13 years.

Israel’s state prosecutor, Moshe Lador and Jerusalem District Attorney Eli Abarbanel were to meet this week with Talansky’s Israeli lawyers to discuss how Talansky would be able to complete his testimony.

“I assume it’s impossible to force the Americans not to investigate Talansky’s affairs, or to close any cases that might be opened against him,” Yehoshua Reznik, one of Talansky’s Israeli attorneys, told The Jerusalem Post. “But it’s possible to try to reach a situation in which what is said during the rest of his questioning will not be used against him there. That seems realistic to us.”

But other Israeli jurists said the chances of Israel being able to secure such a deal for Talansky are slim. A senior American legal official also said he doubted the U.S. authorities would agree to such a deal.

The scope of the American investigation is not known, but Talansky, an ordained Orthodox rabbi, had served as the U.S. treasurer of the New Jerusalem Foundation, a charity Olmert established shortly after being elected mayor of Jerusalem in 1993. Now Israel’s National Fraud Unit is investigating three members of the charity’s board — Olmert, Talansky and Joseph Elmaleh, who gave Olmert a low-interest $75,000 loan in 1993 that was never repaid.

A two-month investigation by The Jewish Week revealed in July that Olmert crisscrossed America to raise money for the foundation. And during the height of the second intifada in the early 1990s, Olmert said the money would help Israeli terror victims.

But The Jewish Week found many financial anomalies in the operation of the New Jerusalem Foundation and its American fundraising arm. It found also that much of the money was raised in cash. And the U.S. arm of the foundation failed to disclose to the Internal Revenue Service its ties to the Jerusalem operation, as required by law, and the salary of its Jerusalem director general.

Olmert is scheduled to be questioned by Israeli authorities for a sixth time late this week as they continue to pursue their probes against him. In addition to the alleged bribery, authorities are also said to be investigating whether he billed the Israeli government and private organizations abroad for the same trips he made to the United States.

Rabbi Nochum Rosenberg, originally from New York, America, was forced to flee from a Stamford Hill synagogue where he had been listening to a lecture on July 24.

He ran into Manor Road, and was taken to safety after stopping a passing police car.

Rabbi Rosenberg, campaigns to uncover child abuse in strictly orthodox communities, and he believes it's his work that led to the chaos.

"Some find my work very irritating as a result I have a lot of friends but also a lot of enemies.

"I was listening to the lecture in the synagogue but with more and more people coming in, it was getting a little crowded.

"I decided to leave but some people followed me and more came as word spread that I was there, they were all talking on their cellphones.

"A car mounted the pavement in front of me and everyone was shouting foul abusive language at me.

"I started to run and they chased me there must have been about 200 of them

"I thank god that the police came when they did, I shouted for them to help me saying the crowd were trying to kill me.

Police officers took Rabbi Rosenberg to Stoke Newington Police Station, before moving him to a hotel, where he stayed before returning to the States on July 27.

A spokeswoman for Hackney police said: "Officers were driving down Lordship Road at around 11.50pm.

"They saw a crowd of around 200 Chasidic Jewish men acting in a violent manner towards one man.

"The officers made there presence felt and once he was taken away the disorder ended."

Rabbi Rosenberg, is determined to continue fighting child abuse in Orthodox Jewish communities.

The 58-year-old said: "I was very surprised at what happened, it's my work that caused it, but I don't do anything bad.

"The Jewish community must deal with child molestation and not sweep it under the rug.

It was a Saturday afternoon in July, and according to the police report, the young man was driving drunk. So drunk, in fact, that he drove into the oncoming lane, rolled his car, crashed into a cottage and then tried to flee the scene on foot. It's a sad but not surprising story—except for the details: the driver was an Orthodox Jew, vacationing in the Catskills. It was Sabbath, and he was wasted. Milton Berle was echoing the generations-old conventional wisdom when he quipped that "Jews don't drink much because it interferes with their suffering." Except, of course, they do. Orthodox Jews especially have started to wrestle with what some say is a growing problem of alcohol abuse in their communities. Editorialists in Jewish papers and blogs wring their hands over the college students who wind up in the emergency room after over-imbibing on Purim or the men who leave Saturday services en masse to tipple in the cloakroom before returning, rowdy and indecorous, to the sanctuary in time for the sermon. In 2005, the Orthodox Union (which oversees the nation's Orthodox synagogues) issued a strong statement against these "kiddush clubs." "They were drinking not only the [ceremonial] kiddush wine, but fine single-malt whiskey with a sumptuous smorgasbord," says Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union. "It's not only drinking, it's idealized drinking, which is a very, very bad message for the kids." Many synagogues have since curtailed the clubs, he says.

Alcohol problems always carry a stigma, but in Orthodox circles that stigma is particularly constraining. "Everybody's looking at each other and thinking, 'Is this a family I want my son or daughter to marry into?' " explains Jonathan Katz, director of a New York City-based group for Jewish alcoholics and addicts called JACS. That's why, Rabbi Weinreb says, some Orthodox drinkers go to Alcoholics Anonymous groups in church basements, where they won't see anyone they know. But other Jewish drinkers like to deal with their problem among their own. JACS offers 12-step groups, and a Jewish-only rehab center in Los Angeles called Beit T'shuva includes Jewish spirituality in its recovery program. Young men in rabbinical training at the Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and elsewhere take alcohol-awareness seminars, and in November, JACS published a book of confessional essays about alcohol by Jewish women.

The truth is, though, that Jews don't drink—much. Historically, Jews have not had alcohol problems to the extent as some other religious groups—only 11 percent of Jewish men have problems with alcohol abuse and dependence, compared with 28 percent of non-Jewish men. Researchers aren't sure why, but point to a possible combination of factors. It could be that Jews, who for generations have lived as guests in a host country, feel pressure to be "on our best behavior," as Katz puts it. It could be that rigorous religious observance inoculates people against drunkenness—shown to be true across religions. Or it could be genetic: some Jews do have a form of a gene, also common in Asians, which can protect against alcohol abuse.

Weinreb says he sees drunkenness much more often these days, especially among younger people who think nothing of bringing a six-pack to a party. New research is beginning to support the rabbi's worries: young Jews do seem to be more vulnerable to alcohol than their parents. A 2007 study showed that Israelis younger than 33, especially those without the protective gene, are much more likely to engage in excessive drinking than those who are older. Small studies on recent Russian immigrants in Israel and Jewish college students in the United States show that under the right kind of environmental circumstances, some Jews do engage in heavy drinking. For anyone who's ever been to a bar or a college campus, that's hardly a headline.

Although most food pantries work on a "no questions asked" policy - not keeping statistics on who uses their services - these organizations are witnessing a dramatic increase in the number of those in need. The services of food pantries are clearly no longer just for the unemployed. The cost of living on Long Island is on the rise, causing many to struggle just to make ends meet.

Many middle-class families across Nassau County can no longer afford the essentials to get through a week. "The middle class is starting to go through foreclosures, losing their jobs and struggling to pay the price of gas," said Chana Pfeifer of the JCC of the Greater Five Towns Kosher Food Pantry. my children were placed in frum homes where they were raped. Yes I mean Ohel. And In court they did everything they could to prevent me from having custody. and fought me tooth and nail for two years. Now most have moved out but I am still paying child support for one of my children to be in the hoome of a convicted child rapist--all because of ohel

the basic story is that my x wife had remarried. Her husband had recently been in prison for raping his daughters. But he is a highly respected member of a Chasidic community in Brooklyn. A prominent Chasidic rabbi pulled the strings and he was out of prison after having spent only a few days there.
Then he began using my children for punching bag practice. One of my girls called me and asked what to after he attacked her I said call the police.
He was arrested and yet again no problem he was out the next day. But there was a restraining order on him for about a month. So my x wife left the kids to go live with him. Then ohel g got them. At that point I found out what was going on and went to the agency with Rav Nelkenbaum the current rosh yeshiva of the Mir yeshiva in Brooklyn as a character witness. He knows me very well since the time I had been a bachur in the yeshiva and a avreach.(i.e married) the agency ignored rav nelkenbaum and I. It sounded to me that he was expecting that treatment since also understands the world outside the gemara. But as a friend he agreed to come with me to vouch for me though he thought it was futile.
Then I went to court and found myself being accused of all types of nefarious deeds by aohel. It seemed bizarre to me and still does. The funny thing is all through the two years I was trying to get my kids out of that agency they were telling me was hell and I also had reason to suspect they were being used sexually by the frum families they had been placed with.—of course later that turned out to be true.
Somehow I was being accused of the very things they were doing. But legally I was what they were calling at the court –non respondent—ie not accused of wrong doing.
And here is where it gets weirder for some reason they were able to manipulate the child welfare agency in new to recommend the children be placed with the child rapist. So I lost the battle and the war. Nowadays I guess sexual molestation is less popular by the frum.

Jews are at war. Spies are at work. Conspiratorial plots abound. Government agencies are storming the gates. Casualties are expected. A battle of epic proportion not seen since Joshua blew down the Jericho walls. It is not taking place on the disputed Gaza Strip but in the small rural town of Postville Iowa. Postville is the location of the Agriprocessors kosher meat packing plant. It has become the site of of a battle between the owners of the plant and some very strange bedfellows over allegations of misconduct including violation of child labor law, providing false residency documents to illegal alien employees, slush funds for illegal employees inhumane slaughtering of animals and even allegations that the plant has been used as a “meth lab”. The plant has been infiltrated by PETA spies, overrun by invading hoards of Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) agents and is allegedly under scrutiny by the DEA. A battle scenario worthy of a Tom Hanks lead.

This re-examination of values should concern Agriprocessors. The kosher meat market is multi-billion dollar industry of which they hold a substantial market share. A loss of confidence in the kosher slaughtering methods and other moral mandates of Jewish religious and dietary practices could have devastating financial impact Agriprocessor’s bottom line as well as its employees and the town of Postville Iowa. It goes well beyond Jewish issues and hits on a shattered town dependent on the plant for its survival. There are also the basic laws of economics dragging on AG. If your target market on longer feels good about your product, demand goes down and profits follow. Agriprocessors disputes that the allegations will hurt their business or reputation in the long term.

Strip away the mudslinging. Strip away religious and cultural outrage. You are still left with allegations of behavior that if true can not be tolerated on any level. Animal cruelty is a crime. Using child labor as slave labor is a crime. Conspiring to provide and actually providing false immigration documents to illegal aliens is a crime. At most the owners are guilty of conspiratorial criminal conduct punishable in a courtroom free of religious influence. At a minimum they are guilty of what amounts to “criminal ignorance” of what is going on in their company. The federal investigation continues. The two highest ranking employees arrested in the raid have just recently argued that their trials should be moved from Des Moines, Iowa due to the massive publicity. Both supervisors have been charged with encouraging illegal immigrants to reside in the United States and with aiding and abetting the possession and use of fraudulent identification. One has also been charged with aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft. Those further up the food chain at AG have to be holding their collective breaths for the dreaded word that a “Rat Out Michael Vick” type plea agreement has been reached. You can bet their has been brutal pressure on these guys to serve up some big wigs.

Has Agriprocessors been singled out for prosecution? When over 50 percent of your workforce is illegal you have not been singled out, you have been caught.

LOS ANGELES -- Six firefighters were released from a hospital early Thursday after being exposed to fumes in a market that was closed for fumigation, authorities said.

Firefighters were called to Glatt Mart, a Kosher market at 8708 W. Pico Blvd., at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday when a fire alarm at the location was activated, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

When no external evidence of a fire was found, crews forced entry into the market to complete their investigation, he said.

Upon entry, six firefighters became ill from the presence of Pyrocide 100, a commercial aerosol pesticide fumigant that was being used for pest control at the location, he said.

The six were treated at the scene for respiratory irritation, one for chest discomfort. All were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in fair condition and released within two hours, he said.

A LAFD Hazmat team along with the commercial pest control firm that placed the insecticide inside the market determined that there was no fire inside the structure, he said.

No civilians were hurt, Humphrey said.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Health Hazardous Material Division were summoned to the scene to determine whether the fumigant used was appropriate for a food store, Humphrey said.

The market will remain closed at least until investigators complete their assessment, he said.

If convicted, Byers and Shereshevsky each could face up to five years in prison and be liable for fines. The SEC complaint asks for restitution to customers.

Aside from real estate investments, WexTrust has an affiliate that runs a stock brokerage. Company investments include a Lincoln Park hotel, the Park View Hotel at 1816 N. Clark, which is undergoing a renovation.

Earlier this year, the company formed a division to teach financial trading skills.

According to an informant, Byers and Shereshevsky tried to repay the funds through another investment, an African diamond mine.

"Under the worst (expletive deleted) case scenario, I got to get enough money out of the diamond mine to pay GSA," Byers said to the informant, according to the complaint.

The SEC alleges Byers, who owns 60 percent of Wextrust, acknowledged he might go to jail if the fraud was discovered.

"I'm the CEO ... so let's say it all blows up alright and I'm (expletive deleted) gone, alright," Byers said to the informant, according to the complaint. "What kind of deal I cut or how long I go or what my life is like after that, I don't know."

http://www.namibian.com.na/2008/August/national/08212851A2.html

A BOMBSHELL has burst over the Toscanini diamond mine on Namibia's Skeleton Coast after two of its American investment brokers, Steven Byers and Joseph Shereshevsky of Chicago-based Wextrust LLC, were arrested last week by the US Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly operating a nearly N$2 billion (US$255 million) pyramid scheme.

US authorities said the pair had targeted members of the Orthodox Jewish community in the US and Israel to solicit money to invest in unlisted securities (shares) in property and property holding companies.

The pair had created more than 150 different companies for this purpose, the SEC said, but none of the properties were ever bought.

Instead, the money was diverted to pay off previous investors, pay off their own expenses and finance their lavish lifestyle, which included a corporate jet.

Shereshevsky had invested some of this money in diamond mines in South Africa and Namibia, seemingly in the hope of generating enough profits to cover their mounting losses in the US, the SEC said.

Wextrust's South African director, Michael van der Merwe, who heads up their South African "affiliate" Pure Africa Minerals (PAM), this week denied that he or his company was under investigation.

In spite of a court order obtained by the SEC-appointed receiver to have all Wextrust's assets seized, Van der Merwe insisted that their diamond mining operations in South Africa and Namibia would continue, in spite of "short-term cash-flow constraints."

He was in the process of raising bridging financing from the Israeli RosenRam group, and they intended going ahead with a planned listing on the London Stock Exchange Alternative Investments Market, he said.

But questions remained, not least because of Van der Merwe's own recent spending spree that company sources said included at least 54 properties in Pretoria, game farms and other assets, allegedly all registered in close relatives' names.

Although appointed a Wextrust director last year, Van der Merwe denied that he would in any way be seen as being complicit in Wextrust's collapse and subsequent criminal prosecution for fraud.

Wextrust's legal woes could end plans to develop a diamond mine in Namibia's Skeleton Coast, where PAM's local affiliate Brett Investments had been mining the Toscanini claims on behalf of Malaysian licensees.

The Skeleton Coast's fabled diamond riches have attracted more than their fair share of swindlers: in the 1970s, George Christodoulou (brother of boxing promoter Stan) ran a similar scam that fleeced the likes of Elvis Presley, Alice Cooper and Margaux Hemingway out of millions before disappearing to Cyprus.

The Malaysians have however been all but declared persona non grata in Namibia after their local representative falsely accused Namibian Diamond Commissioner Kennedy Hamutenya of being involved in stealing diamonds off the Toscanini claims.

Brett's local shareholders - which includes several Swapo Party luminaries - this week were scrambling to stop Van der Merwe from selling the mine's most recent diamond production, valued at about N$4 million.

An e-mail from Byers - who like Shereshevsky has been denied bail - to an informant inside Wextrust suggested that income from two diamond mines at Lichtenberg in South Africa and two mines in Namibia was to be used to pay off Wextrust's creditors, according to the SEC charges filed last week in New York.

This, the smaller investors surmised, meant that whatever money raised from the diamond sales would be diverted from local operations to cover Wextrust's losses in the US, estimated to have been in excess of N$7 million a month.

Alarm was also raised over the PAM-appointed general manager at the Toscanini mine, an un-rehabilitated insolvent named Herbert Schubert who was fired from Taeuber & Corssen (Namibia) two years ago for presenting a fake MBA that he claimed was obtained from Oxford University.

A copy of this "MBA" showed that it was in fact issued by "Oxford College", an off-shoot of the Damelin correspondence school.

Schubert's cellphone was switched off and could not be reached for comment.

Other questions remained: Six months after the Malaysians' Toscanini mining licence had expired, the company continues to do what amounts to mining rather than exploration on the Skeleton Coast, raising fears that it was simply targeting only the richest possible deposits.

The only solution, a geologist who had formerly worked in the area suggested, was for the Government to hold all the diamond leases there and put the operator's contract out to tender on 15-year basis.

The risk was otherwise that the resource - a large but low- to medium-quality ore body along Namibia's Skeleton Coast that produced 8 000 carats over the past two years - eventually would become economically unviable to mine, he warned.

Steve:

I honestly did not take note of the name of the molester, and that is why I did not name him. I am glad that you did.

The allegations against an individual as a molester require that immediate action is taken to protect the victim and potential victims. Not to prosecute. I have no condolences for whatever befalls a molester. The challenge is (I may be repeating myself) achieving verification that the injustice (too mild of a word, I know) has occurred. I can cite several cases where issues over money have become the basis for parents seeking to destroy a rebbe-tutor, and this had the parents campaigning through false reports. If we are trigger happy and send everyone to police, we will catch some molesters and destroy other innocent people. Especially if we have an automatic police report model.

You are perfectly accurate that we lack a system of verification, and our challenge is to develop something that will please both halacha and the law of the land. Such a panel should include Rabbonim, but not only Rabbonim. I would add that many Rabbonim, despite their vast knowledge of Torah and halacha are naïve and even ignorant about many issues where we need their ability to guide us. I once had a shailoh on a chicken, and the initial psak of the dayan was negative. I shared this with the chicken “socher” who was a family friend. He stated “Aider men gait tzum dayan, geit men tzum katzav” – prior to going to the dayan, go to the butcher. He explained that what I had found by the chicken was a result of the processing for packaging, and unrelated to the kashrus of the product. I took this information back to the posek (who knew the businessman), and he changed his psak. Our Rabbonim too often lack basic information about the facts on the ground. Their vast fund of halacha expertise becomes useless if they do not know the “metziyus”. So my vision of a panel would definitely include Rabbonim, but could not be limited to them. In addition, these Rabbonim would have undergone considerable training to have adequate knowledge of the facts on the ground. Undoubtedly, professionals would be involved. I also envision other community members being involved. Is that too many people? Where should we draw the line? There are many difficult questions here.

The investigative panel before police is critical. One would be foolish to expect perfection, but the need to weed out cases that do not involve a “rodeyf” is crucial. I recently consulted to a case where a 10 year old boy called home and gave the parents the code he was given before the summer in case of “boundary violation”. (How’s that for PC?) I participated in the investigation. A counselor from a different bunk had pinched the child on the cheek in the dining room even after being asked to stop. He then gave a few more smacks, including one on his bottom. The child had asked him to stop several times. This was pursued relentlessly through two different menahalim in the camp whom I know well, and who have extensive training in this issue. The result was that this counselor is not only being sent away from the camp, but will have a record (he falls below the threshold for reporting to authorities), for future reference, as abusive. Here’s the catch. “Physical abuse”. There was no molestation of any kind, and pinning this on him is totally unfair. He does not belong in chinuch, neither yeshiva nor camp. But to brand him a molester or sexual abuser is equally criminal. There’s more to the story, but the point is that the investigation led to the fact that the child was offended, and used the signal that directed us to consider this a sexual offense when it wasn’t. These mistakes happen often, and if we develop a system, we cannot have false positives on our consciences. At the level of the child complaining, I do not mind the exaggeration, but this is not okay to brand someone forever.

This fear will never lead me to compromise on safety. Upon accusation, the alleged offender must be removed from those environments and situations that involve risk, and all victims or potential victims must be guaranteed complete immunity and safety. Then a “panel” must immediately investigate the situation, and bring it to authorities if there is credibility. A mother crying in someone’s office or talking on the phone is not enough to establish credibility.

Just to recap, the poskim have established that an abuser is a rodeyf. None of these poskim needs my endorsement. However, none of them ruled that an accused abuser is a rodeyf. That’s the sore point here. This sofek can either be used to protect an innocent man or to destroy him. I never even hinted that I would lessen anyone’s protection or safety at any time.

Devorim: The Destruction and Restoration of Dignity

Nine Days Minus One

A few days ago I bumped into an old friend whom I have not seen for 34 years. He was my high school classmate, and back then we were close friends.

I could not control my tears – not over meeting my friend after all these years, but over the state he was in. Unnaturally thin and jittery, (I shall call him) Michael was clearly a junkie. He had an awkward smile on his face and I saw that we would not be able to have an honest conversation.

He was such a promising student. Bright and creative, shy and gentle, we always thought that Michael would do some great things with his life. Here he stood before me on a street corner nervously rolling a cigarette, shifting eyes, a mere skeleton and specter of the Michael I once knew and admired.

To my question "Where do you live?" he sadly answered, "I don't have my own place, I move around. Housing in New York is expensive…" "Are you working, earning an income?" "Yes, I'm eking out a living here and there." I offered help, but knew that Michael would not follow up.

I touched upon some of the deepest beliefs that we shared together, back when we ere teenagers in Yeshiva on Ocean Parkway. But Michael was detached. He spoke about the past as if it was not about him.

He was far gone, in a different orbit. Had I tried to hug him he would have recoiled.

I will never forget the Shabbos walk we took together when Michael began sliding so many years ago. At the time he was trying to convince me to join him in, what he called an innocuous, game of gambling at cards. As we walked down Eastern Parkway he asked if I minded that he lit up a cigarette. Always the gentle soul, Michael was being sensitive to my sentiments about Shabbos. I chose not to answer, and Michael took that as an ok.

As time passed I noticed the visible differences in Michael as he became consumed with the "weed" and his daily routines began to orbit around his next "hit." Conversations, usually so stimulating, began to dull. His usually clarity and sharp wit became an afterthought. He would spend hours in his basement apartment all alone. He was slipping and slipping fast, in a vicious ruinous cycle.

It was the first time I was ever exposed to the utter wasting of a human being due to drug addiction. Nothing else matters. You look forward to nothing as much as the drug and its effects. "It" becomes your nurturer, your best friend, the one you turn to in times of need, the final recourse when all else fails. Every minute of your waking hours – and even asleep – every decision, every move, is determined by the next "high."

And then, perhaps worst of all, is the loneliness. A loneliness that I cannot begin to imagine – and one that demonstrates how utterly destructive this "lifestyle" can become – you are all alone with your obsession, with your compulsion, only you and your dark desire. And every time you succumb, the lonelier it gets. At some point the human psyche must snap into a submission to this "new reality" simply to be able to survive and not be overcome by sheer shame and desperation.

Once caught in this mad whirlpool, there seemed no way out for Michael. And then we graduated, each of us going our own way.

Now, 32 years later, he is still controlled by the dark demon within. He lives in world of shadows, seemingly always on the run. Escaping what? Himself above all. Why they call it "substance abuse" seems odd; it's not abuse of the substance, but of yourself.

What happened to this young man that I knew? And to so many others like him?

-- As I am writing these words I realize that they may come across as judgmental or condescending. That is the farthest of my intentions. We all have our vices and ugly corners. We are taught that seeing a fault in another is like looking in a mirror: It is a reflection of our own shortcomings. Michael for me is a mirror image of the dark obsessions that we all are capable of falling into. --

What happened to Michael and what happens to each of us when another force takes control of our lives?

Your inner dignity – what the Kabbalists call Malchus – is damaged.

And that's why I chose to write about this subject today. We now stand in the Nine Days, the saddest period of the Jewish calendar, due to the destruction of the Holy Temple and other tragedies that took place during these days, culminating with Tisha B'Av (this Sunday) – the saddest day of all, when the Temple actually went up in flames.

Annually this period is honored as a time of mourning and grief over our losses. Tisha b'Av is a 24-hour fast day (beginning at night), the lights are dimmed, we sit on low stools and recite lamentations.

As continuously discussed in this column, we are not simply grieving over past events, but over all forms of destruction in our lives – every form of grief and loss evolves from the rupturing of the bond between spirit and matter that occurred when the Divine presence in the Temple no longer found a "home" in our material universe and was compelled to go into "hiding."

Each of us has an indispensable soul within, which is the ultimate root of all confidence and sense of purpose. Our convictions, hopes and greatest dreams flow form our inner "malchus' – a profound sense of dignity and majesty that stems from the Divine image in which we were all created. It is the feeling that "you matter" and you have the power to achieve anything you set your mind to.

In contrast, what is the root of all destruction? The annihilation of malchus – when this dignity is violated.

The Arizal explains why the Fifteenth of Av is the greatest of holidays ("there were no greater holidays for Israel than the 15th of Av and Yom Kippur"), because its full moon follows and repairs the "destruction" of the "moon" (Malchus) on Tisha b'Av, when the Temple was destroyed. The greatness of the ascent is in direct proportion to the depths of the descent that precedes it.

Looking now at my old friend Michael, meeting him during these Nine Days, I see with my own eyes how his malchus/dignity was destroyed. Destroyed on a conscious level. Once that part of you – your purest element, the one that feeds your sense of self-value – is compromised, it's just a matter of time that your life begins to spiral downward out of control, in one form or another.

For some it takes on the shape of raw dysfunctionality. Others are creative enough to find ways to remain functional ("functional addicts") to some extent, and learn how to "cover their tracks" as they maneuver their way day to day. Variations are as numerous as people themselves. Seeing someone use their creative juices – not to mention the energy, time and money wasted – for such machinations is, of course, one of the saddest things to observe. Often arrogance is one of the mechanisms used (usually unintentionally) to cover up low self-esteem (a weak sense of malchus).

The question, however, begs: What could bring someone to compromise their own sense of self-worth? Who in their right mind would allow their inner dignity to be violated? Human nature is such that we would anything to not allow ourselves to be humiliated, let alone to allow our entire dignity to be undermined.

The answer is obvious from the question: At the outset no one ever damages their own malchus/dignity. Any such damage is always initiated by someone outside ourselves: A parent, an educator, an adult – anyone that we may have trusted can hurt us, especially in our most vulnerable and impressionable childhood years.

Not along ago, I conversed with a psychologist who specializes in youth at risk, focusing primarily on kids in the religious Jewish community. I asked him for his experienced opinion on why some young adults break away from the lifestyle and traditions of their own families and communities. None of us are immune to temptations and challenges. In most cases people learn to cope with their vices – some carry them undercover, other carry on dual lives or worse – without a need to break away ostensibly from the larger community. Why then do others make an actual public and pronounced break – they cease to be openly observant or some other manifest expression of changing their lifestyles? Are they simply more honest? Do they have greater temptations than the norm? Is it due to their upbringing? Is it genetic? Do they lack certain coping skills, and if so, why? Or is it perhaps the other way around: They are smarter and actually deny faith due to their philosophical skepticism?

His answer startled me. "First I considered all the factors you mention – honesty, intelligence, family – but I came to realize that they cannot account for most cases and don't reflect any patterns that point to one cause or another. There are children from excellent families as well as broken ones that remain within the community. The same is with both skeptics and conformists, and the other identifiable categories.

"People are natural social creatures. They gravitate to groups and communities, and in most instances loath total isolation. They crave peer approval. Even non-conformists (which is a minority in any group) need social interaction. Most people, even radical individualists, will usually maintain their social identity, identifying with the communities of their upbringing. In most cases, only a radical jolt to the psyche will cause someone to explicitly break away from their peer group.

"In my experience I am slowly coming to the conclusion that in many of these cases the radical jolt began with some form of sexual molestation, in which the child's inner dignity was violated. When someone is hurt on that level it defiles the innermost, intimate dimensions of the psyche; it drives the child into silence (out of shame and fear he will not speak about the abuse with parents or teachers), a silence and loneliness that eats away, like a cancer, at the child's inner dignity.

"In many such instances a child has enough resilience to absorb the blow and come out intact. But in sustained abuse, or if it is a particularly sensitive child, or other unique factors, the violation – and the related shame, silence and loneliness – will jolt the child into another orbit, making him susceptible to further radical changes.

Then, when you add pot or other drugs into the equation – which a young adult may take recreationally; or due to escapism; to relieve the inner anxiety and shame; out of mediocrity and boredom and the search for a high – these drugs diminish natural inhibitions and thus can actually alter human personality, including the need to remain within ones family and community structure.

"So, combine all the above, coupled with hormones and other natural factors – the volatile combination, ignited by the jolting catalyst, can actually cause someone to make the radical jump and abandon their past.

"I know that this is a radical theory, which may be impossible to substantiate, due to the fact that most victims do not acknowledge or may bee unaware of the effects of their own experiences."

"So, what do you suggest?" I asked the psychologist. "Zero tolerance of any form of abuse in our schools, homes and camps. Absolute and unequivocal action must be taken to not allow any such behavior, and to immediately take action if any such report is made, and not push it under the rug due to 'inconvenience' and scandal."

Whether you agree or disagree with this psychologist's ideas, it definitely provides food for thought. Obviously, great care has to be taken not to stereotype anyone and try to over generalize and develop formulas without regarding the complexities of life. Not everything can and needs to be explained. Yet, due to the serious crisis – and so many beautiful souls adrift – we are behooved to look into these issues and see what preventive medicine can be employed in our homes and schools, and what interventions need to be immediately deployed once there is a violation.

I know that this is a heavy – and terribly sad – topic. But when else to speak about it then in the Nine Days…

The lesson of these days teaches us the terrible consequences of malchus/dignity violated. But awareness of the problem is half its cure: It also instructs us how to repair the rupture: Just as dignity (malchus) on earth was destroyed on Tisha B'Av, we have the power of the full moon on the Fifteenth of Menachem Av to restore dignity, and with even greater intensity then the original.

For the sake of our children and their future we need to address these issues head-on, and come up with both preemptive actions as well as appropriate methods to rebuild dignity once it was compromised.

Parents and educators must know that we carry great responsibility and power – with life and death consequences – in cultivating and nurturing the dignity and souls of our children. And this begins not when the child is twenty, ten, or even two years old. It begins at the moment of birth, and even at the moment of conception.

We live in a profoundly insecure world; malchus/dignity is the most lacking dimension. Even if we may have plenty of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, love, discipline, compassion, endurance, humility and bonding (the first nine sefirot) – they are only nine, as in the Ninth of Av; without the tenth – and most important – dimension, we are missing the foundation of all life: inner security, self-worth and dignity that makes all the other nine worth their weight and imbues us with the confidence to use our nine faculties with conviction and sense of urgency and destiny.

Now the challenge is: How do I convey this to my friend Michael and to so many others?

I am open to any ideas.

Is that the Jacobson from Crown Heights who was involved in a shady financial scandal?

Hey...Real Fake Arthur...

Did you even bother to read the article? Obviously not. If that is the only comment you have after reading this article, then from now on I can just scroll by your posts...because I'm not going to take anything you say seriously anyway.

Simon Jacobson's article should be required reading for every parent, Rebbe, and principal.

In fact, I think it should get its own post here or at the "UOJ Group" blog.

I heard from an Agriprocessors new hire – a man brought in by OneForce, one of Agriprocessors staffing agencies, about a month or so ago.

Here is what he said:

1. The contract he was given says rent is $100 the first week and then $60 each additional week for a mattress on the floor in a house with other OneForce workers. (The normal arrangement is two to four mattresses per room, 10 per house.)

2. But despite the contract, OneForce charges him $100 per week every week – even though he protests.

3. Why does he pay? The $100 is automatically taken from each paycheck by Agriprocessors, but this deduction is not marked rent on his pay stub from OneForce – his pay is simply $100 less than what it would otherwise be.

4. His pay is given to him on a debit card.

5. Residents of at least one of the OneForce "dormitory" houses still do not have keys to the house, even though workers have lived there for at least a month.

The house is always open.

Workers have come home from work to find the refrigerator empty and all the food missing. Because of this, they won't buy things like TVs (and they don't make large cash withdrawals from their pay cards).

6. He said he works 11 to 12 hour shifts.

7. He's been shorted pay but thinks this might be OneForce's problem, not Agriprocessors, but he's not sure. He's still trying to get his shorted pay back.

8. Workers can only use the bathroom when the line is stopped for department or plant-wide breaks (which in practice means three times per shift). One of the workers near him was denied a bathroom break and wet his pants. The man kept working in urine-soked cloths for the rest of the shift.

9. Workers scrape meat off the floor with shovels and put it right back on the line.

This is a violation of both USDA regulations and the kosher policy of Agriprocessors rabbis.

The fallen meat is supposed to be taken to a point backward in the line to be reconditioned. But it gets tossed back on the line at the place where it fell anyway, even when supervisors see it, because the pressure to keep increase production is so high.

10. A worker cut himself badly and needed stitches. A supervisor (orange hat) told the worker to go get it stitched up and then take the mandatory drug test before coming back to work. The worker, who smokes a lot of marijuana, told the supervisor he'd never pass the drug test. The supervisor told the worker that for a bribe of $100, the drug test could be skipped.

11. A female worker passed out in the locker room. Supervisors immediately challenged her about drug use but did not attempt to rule out any of possible cause for her collapse. If it is drugs, Agriprocessors doesn't have to pay for her medical care, and that was all the supervisors cared about.

A three hour tour, a three hour tour

Issue of August 15, 2008

We must be missing something.

Federal and state law enforcement is investigating the Rubashkin plant in Postville, Iowa a half dozen different ways, with the most recent unpleasant revelation being alleged child labor violations on a scale said to be unprecedented in the State of Iowa. Yet, to hear continuing reaction to that now famous three hour tour of the plant by a group of rabbis ‹ remember Gilligan’s three hour tour? ‹ a guy not paying attention might think the entire Postville matter has been exposed as a trumped-up blood libel put out there by union organizers who play hardball.

It’s nice to know that the Rubashkin plant is spotless. After all that downtime following the immigration raid, we suppose they had time to clean up a little. Does anyone else think it would have been relevant to point out that Rubashkin paid for the tour? The National Council of Young Israel, which led the visit to Potemkin Village, apparently didn’t.

It’s also good to know that some of the townspeople are standing behind their biggest local employer. And it’s true that an accused under our system of justice is presumed innocent until proven guilty. And it seems clear that the United Food and Commercial Worker’s Union, frustrated in its attempts to unionize the plant, has been trying to stick it to the Rubashkins for years. But, with all that said, does anyone really believe that there’s no case here?

Obviously, we’re not condoning a rush to justice; we’re certainly not condoning loshon horah; and we’re absolutely not condoning the union’s over-the-top activities. But smoke and fire do tend to work together and it seems eminently clear to us that not everything that was going on at that plant was on the up and up. In case you don’t know, The Forward has been reporting this story for years leading up to recent events. Some of the reporting has been about the back and forth with the union, but not all of it. In fact, it’s fair to say that for people who have been following that paper’s coverage, none of this is even much of a surprise.

Pretend for a moment that the initial fuss was about a serious, alleged kashrus violation, and not about civil laws. After what happened in Monsey last year, is there anyone who cares about kashrus who wouldn’t have said, “better safe than sorry” and “you can’t be too careful?” Unlikely. There would have been little talk of loshon horah, and few, if any self-righteous calls about waiting for all the facts. At some point, all the facts will be in - probably at a trial, or maybe several. But in the meantime, what to do?

The Orthodox Union’s point about not being equipped to police legal compliance and immigration issues is a fair one, and calls to boycott Rubashkin meat altogether run headlong into realpolitik namely that the loss of the plant could, and has, wreaked havoc with the glatt meat market. Still, something useful has to come from this.

If nothing else, we hope it’s this: a realization within all parts of the frum community that mitzvah haboh b’aveira is not ok, that civil laws do matter, and that one ignores them at his peril.

UOJ, were you inspired by the man?
----
Lenny Bruce is dead but his ghost lives on and on
Never did get any Golden Globe award, never made it to Synanon.
He was an outlaw, that's for sure,
More of an outlaw than you ever were.
Lenny Bruce is gone but his spirit's livin' on and on.

Maybe he had some problems, maybe some things that he couldn't work out
But he sure was funny and he sure told the truth and he knew what he was talkin'
about. Never robbed any churches nor cut off any babies' heads,
He just took the folks in high places and he shined a light in their beds.
He's on some other shore, he didn't wanna live anymore.

Lenny Bruce is dead but he didn't commit any crime
He just had the insight to rip off the lid before its time.
I rode with him in a taxi once, only for a mile and a half,
Seemed like it took a couple of months.
Lenny Bruce moved on and like the ones that killed him, gone.

They said that he was sick 'cause he didn't play by the rules
He just showed the wise men of his day to be nothing more than fools.
They stamped him and they labeled him like they do with pants and shirts,
He fought a war on a battlefield where every victory hurts.
Lenny Bruce was bad, he was the brother that you never had.

The power of UOJ!

I had to laugh - there was suddenly a giant spike in the sitemeter for a an old, old blog page - a year and a half old, and I wondered if I had missed something in the news about marriages or weddings in the last day or two...but no - it was the power of UOJ! Somebody has referenced that blog in the comments above when this post first came out, and even now an amazing number of people are reading even the old comments of this page from so long ago - just because UOJ reposted it!

Don't anybody doubt UOJ's influence! UOJ can rock the Jewish world.

Ex-U.S. diplomat gets 20 years for teen sex encounters

(AP) — An ex-U.S. diplomat who admitted having sex with teenage girls and taping the encounters while stationed in Brazil and the Congo has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Gons Nachman had sought leniency, claiming cultural differences in those countries made sex with teenage girls more acceptable.

But a judge gave the 42-year-old the maximum sentence and took the unusual step of ordering consecutive 10-year terms for the two counts on which he was convicted.

Nachman pleaded guilty earlier this year to possessing child pornography after admitting he videotaped his sexual encounters while working as a consular officer. The case also included allegations that he pressured Brazilian visa applicants for sex, though he was not charged with that.

Washington — A New York businessman who is at the center of a corruption scandal that brought down Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is now facing an FBI investigation into alleged money laundering and tax evasion.

A federal grand jury was convened in Brooklyn last month and has begun subpoenaing witnesses and documents involved in the businessman’s financial dealings with Olmert. The FBI investigation was kept secret in accordance with laws restricting the disclosure of grand jury procedures, but it was made public August 12 after Talansky’s lawyers learned of the investigation and put out an official letter on this issue.

The Talansky investigation could potentially derail a criminal probe against Olmert, who has already announced that he will resign in September. The businessman has threatened to cease his cooperation with Israeli authorities if the FBI probe against him proceeds. He has demanded that the investigation be stopped and that he be granted immunity from further criminal prosecution based on his testimony in the Olmert case. Israeli prosecutors have joined Talansky in requesting that the probe be halted.

Calls to Talansky’s home on Long Island went unreturned, and his defense attorneys issued only perfunctory statements on the probe. According to neighbors, Talansky has not been seen at his home since he returned from his most recent testimony in Israel.

Talansky testified in Jerusalem in May that he gave Olmert nearly $150,000 over a period of more than a decade. The businessman told investigators that he paid Olmert’s bills at high-end New York and Washington hotels and that he provided the Israeli politician with money for family vacations and expensive cigars. Talansky also testified that he occasionally provided Olmert with envelopes stuffed with thousands of dollars.

Talansky’s lawyers in the United States, Bradley Simon and Neal Sher, first learned of the FBI investigation shortly after the businessman returned from his testimony in Israel. Talansky himself was not formally informed about the investigation, sources close to him say, and learned of the probe through prosecutors who have been conducting the investigation.

The Justice Department has not commented publicly on the investigation.

On August 12, Talansky’s lawyers sent a letter to Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, stating that he would not appear in court August 31 for scheduled cross-examination by Olmert’s defense team.

“By cooperating with Israeli authorities, Mr. Talansky has placed himself in legal jeopardy in the United States,” the attorneys state in the letter.

Advisers to Olmert celebrated the announcement, telling the Israeli press that Talansky’s refusal to cooperate further with the investigation dealt a serious blow to the prosecution and proved that the case against the prime minister was on shaky legal ground.

Sources close to Talansky told the Forward that he would return to Israel and complete his testimony only if the Justice Department’s case against him were closed.

“The government of Israel should protect him as a key witness,” the sources said.

Israeli prosecutors have been in close contact with the Justice Department regarding Talansky’s case, according to an Israeli official informed on the issue. The intergovernmental cooperation began after Talansky first testified in Jerusalem, with representatives of the Israeli police traveling to the United States to join FBI agents in gathering information on the case. The cooperation was based on an Israeli request for judicial assistance, under a joint treaty between the two countries.

Israeli prosecutors are now seeking ways to persuade the Justice Department to halt the investigation in order to ensure Talansky’s return to Israel to give the rest of his testimony. An official who was briefed on the issue said that talks between the sides were still going on and that “it is definitely possible” that a solution will be found in the coming days.

American defense sources said that although Israel cannot formally intervene in an ongoing investigation in the United States, it is not unheard of for American prosecutors to abandon an investigation in favor of a more important one in another country.

“They have an ongoing relationship,” the source said of Israeli and American prosecutors. “They can find an informal way of dealing with it.”

The FBI investigation, according to an Israeli source who is informed on the case, is looking into alleged money laundering violations and bribing of foreign officials by Talansky. The case, if it remains open, could lead to an indictment against Talansky and possibly others involved in providing funds to Israeli politicians.

This comment was written on a Wall St Journal blog. After complaints, the WSJ erased it:

Steve Byers and his wife Lisa are neigbors and members of the local Oak Brook country club, Butterfield. They have a reputation of treating their neighbors and local residents with contempt, while soliciting their money, even from unsophisticated local housewives. Steve bought a jet with the investor
s money, along with diamond earings and Maserati sports cars for his wife and four-star living for themselves.

He is not innocent as one blogger suggests; he ran a sham company (many of our residents have been scammed by him) and appears to suffer from some kind of clinical mental disorder.

The local Oak Brook Drake Hotel deal was another scam on all of us and their employees. Nothing but BS.

If you actually saw Steve and his partner, Shereshevsky (or “Yossi”) you’d run the other direction for cover; they both look like two fat Las Vegas hoodlums. Why any of us gave them the benefit of the doubt is our fault; I suppose because our kids went to school together and they tried to act like community members, we were drawn in to their hidden agenda.

What a sad tragedy.

We all pray for them and their children; yet who prays for the scammed innocent investors and neighbors?

Second bankruptcy filing stirs cheese plant issue
CALIFORNIA LESSEE: Chapter 11 allows firm to continue operations as it tries to settle debts

By DAVID WINTERS
TIMES STAFF WRITER
THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2008
OGDENSBURG — A second bankruptcy filing involving the kosher cheese plant here has complicated an already uncertain situation.

Ahava of California LLC, Venice, Calif., doing business as North Country Manufacturing and Ahava National Food Distributor, filed paperwork July 15 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Central District of California. In the bankruptcy filing, the company listed its assets and liabilities each at $1 million to $10 million and having more than 200 creditors.

Chapter 11 lets Ahava of California President Fariborz Banayan continue operations while he tries to settle the company's debts by arranging a repayment plan with creditors.

St. Lawrence Food Corp., owned by Moise A. Banayan, leased the kosher food operations in Ogdensburg and Lowville to North Country Manufacturing last year. Fariborz Banayan is Moise's brother. The lease for Ogdensburg was signed Oct. 30, 2007, while Lowville was signed Aug. 29, 2007.

The kosher food plants in Ogdensburg and Lowville will continue operating despite the bankruptcy protection filing last month by the California company.

"They have no intention of shutting down operations there," said attorney Josefina F. McEvoy of K&L Gates of Los Angeles, representing Ahava of California, in a telephone interview Wednesday night.

Moise Banayan has no ownership interest in Ahava of California since his brother bought out his 50 percent share of the company in August 2005. The company intends to make lease payments to the city of Ogdensburg and Lewis County Dairy Corp., which owns the Lowville facility, Mrs. McEvoy said.

The city acquired the Main Street building and property last month for delinquent property taxes. City Manager Arthur J. Sciorra said Wednesday that St. Lawrence Food didn't pay the 2006 tax bill on the property, totaling $89,000.

"Our goal is to see the plant remain open and become prosperous," said Mr. Sciorra, who hasn't talked yet with Ahava of California officials. Mrs. McEvoy plans on talking with city leaders today.

The city acquired the 30 Main St. building and property in late July to protect its investment out of concern Signature Bank might take the equipment and close the plant.

The New York City bank filed suit in December against Ahava Food Corp., Yoni Realty LLC and Schwartz & Sons Inc., Brooklyn; Lewis County Dairy Corp., Lowville; St. Lawrence Food Corp., Ogdensburg, and Moise Banayan and Ana Banayan, Monsey, for being in default on several loans. The case is pending.

The city manager met for about 90 minutes Wednesday with Moise Banayan and his attorney, David P. Antonucci of Watertown. The parties discussed the future of the Ogdensburg plant and outstanding bills owed to the city.

"The city has been highly generous in keeping the operation going," Mr. Antonucci said after the meeting. Moise Banayan declined comment.

St. Lawrence Food owes the city about $600,000 in delinquent utility payments, property taxes and loans. Moise Banayan filed in April for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of New York in Utica. Last month, he decided to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection instead.

Chapter 11 grants relief from debt to a person or organization that is reorganizing with the goal of paying debtors. Under Chapter 7, all assets are liquidated to pay off debts, with the goal of starting over.

In his bankruptcy filing, Moise Banayan listed his assets at $0 to $50,000 and his liabilities at $10 million to $50 million. He listed 29 creditors, including Signature Bank of New York City, which is seeking $11 million.

The city and St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency filed a joint foreclosure notice in early July. The county IDA is owed about $335,000 on two loans totaling $500,000.

Mr. Sciorra said he's unsure if the outstanding bills to the city will be paid. County IDA officials didn't return calls for comment.

The Ogdensburg plant employs about 60 full-time workers, according to company officials. Lewis County Dairy produces bottled milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream, which are then sold in New York City. It employs about 50 people.

Blackstone Executive's Father-In-Law Arrested in Extortion Plot

By Joel Rosenblatt

Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- The father-in-law of Blackstone Group LP London office head David Blitzer was arrested with a lawyer on charges of trying to extort money from Blitzer, New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said.

Stuart Ross, 71, of Aventura, Florida, is estranged from his daughter, Allison Blitzer, who is married to David Blitzer, the prosecutor said yesterday in a statement. Ross and his lawyer, Stuart Jackson, 79, threatened to ruin David Blitzer's life unless he paid the two men as much as $11 million, according to the statement.

Earlier this year, Blitzer responded to Ross's request for money for a new business by sending him $65,000, according to Morgenthau. After Blitzer told Ross in May that he wouldn't send more, Ross continued to pursue Blitzer, saying in a June voice- mail message he would ``commit open warfare'' if he didn't get more cash, according to the statement. Jackson sent letters to Blizter's attorney that provided an ``imprimatur of legality'' to the threats, Morgenthau said.

Ross told Blitzer he would ``harass Blitzer with incessant phone calls, and would contact Blitzer's supervisors, the media, and law enforcement with accusations that he claimed would damage Blitzer's reputation, ruin his career, and even lead to his arrest,'' Morgenthau said in the statement.

Blitzer sued Ross in a separate civil lawsuit filed yesterday in New York Supreme Court. Ross was once a successful businessman who had licensing rights to the Smurf cartoon characters and lost his fortune to profligate spending, bad business decisions and a drinking problem, according to the complaint. When Allison Blitzer was pregnant, Ross told her he hoped the child would die and that Allison's gravestone should be carved with a vile obscenity, according to the complaint.

$195,000 Stolen

In addition to the $65,000 described in Morgenthau's statement, Blitzer claims he gave Ross $75,000 for an Internet venture and put another $120,000 in escrow to be released on conditions not specified in the lawsuit. Ross stole the entire $195,000, according to the complaint.

Ross demanded increasing amounts of money in a harassment campaign that included ``countless telephone calls to Blitzer's personal phone and office, at all hours of the day and night,'' according to Blitzer's complaint. Ross threatened to send a note to Blackstone Chairman Stephen Schwarzman, and made calls and sent e-mails to Blitzer's superiors at the company, Blitzer alleged.

Blackstone is the New York-based manager of the world's biggest buyout fund.

`Your Worst Nightmare'

According to the complaint, Ross called Blitzer after he dispatched Jackson to meet with him, telling Blitzer, ``David, this is your worst nightmare. Your father in law Stuart Ross. You have been a discourteous prick to Stuart Jackson. I am going to continue to harass you. I am going to call you every day -- four or five times a day -- I am going to keep calling -- I will continue to harass you.''

Ross and Jackson were charged with two counts of grand larceny and face as much as seven years in prison if convicted, Morgenthau said.

Jackson wasn't immediately available to comment. Phone calls to his office got a busy signal yesterday.

Morgenthau spokeswoman Maxey Greene and Blitzer's lawyer, Roger Stavis, didn't immediately return calls made after business hours yesterday.

One can get quite despondent reading about the terrible avlehs taking place in the so named "frum" (Fill Rishus Vintzig Mitvohs) communities. But then I read the following that brought a smile to my face and light to my heart.A small light that hopefully will pierce the darkness of the finstere golus that we find ourselves in.
"By Getzy Markowitz
Dovid and I spent last Shabbat as guests of one of Bangkok's Chabad Houses, located on backpack-populated Rum Buttri Road. The company of a "smaller than usual crowd" of over 400 Jewish travelers filling the enormous dining hall, or the tasty cuisine filling our stomachs was impressive, but hardly the highlight. The accounts of Jews from all walks of life saying how they have found their path at the center was moving, but what moved us most was the unyielding, untouchable dedication of the ones who deeply touch these lives.

To stand in the presence of the Kantor or Wilhelm families is to stand in the presence of greatness, because one can easily detect the presence of their dispatcher in their every action. In a place where people come to revel and rebel, these messengers revive and offer something real and everlasting. Outside, locals peddle the popular Thai massage; inside the Shluchim deliver their famous message. They really love their fellow Jew, and as one young lady put it, "The woman who does not yet light Shabbat candles or the man not yet adorned with Tzitzit is welcomed with no strings attached."

Of course every Chabad representative is a hero, his partner a heroine. But even heroes have role models, and the Kantors and Wilhelms have been playing that role for over a decade. It takes a lot for a Chassidic family to move to the ends of the earth, and there is no end to the list of couples who anticipate doing what thousands already have. But it is not only the tourists to Thailand that admire these people, but the Lubavitchers who represent the cause in these visitors' locales.

Most astonishing are their children. They are deprived of the friends and environment offered in large communities, but identical and ever more invigorated than the children who inhabit them. These kids are great. On Friday evening, one of them fearlessly addressed hundreds of adults, her younger brother singing a solo to the same audience. In the morning they are praying. Later they will be playing. But they stop their games to help another Jew or tend to their studies. They are not just their parents' students, but teachers to countless, including Dovid and myself.

As we sat in Rabbi and Mrs. Kantor's home upon Shabbat's departure, and a few hours before our own, we were consumed by a man who carries the responsibility of maintaining five centers and dozens of staff, and yet has the time and endless energy to be a shining example for his proud glowing children.

As I sit on this New York bound flight, Dovid is en-route to Australia. For over a month we have been surviving on long-life food, daily doses of crackers and tuna, and the model of our exemplars. These Rabbis and their families remind us of a verse in this week's Torah study: "Man does not live by bread alone, but by the word that proceeds out of the mouth of G-d does man live." For their energy is not the ordinary, and their insatiability is extraordinary."

Re: forming commitees to oversee Non-Profit organizations and Mosdos, obviously this is practically difficult to ever implement. Its much easier for all the morons to wake up and smell the coffee. For example, when an appeal is made in shul - a tactic designed to humiliate and force people to give more than they otherwise would, stay silent and swallow your pride. Those bastards who have no real authority to do so and get up and do it on their own for some bogus cause, which ends up maybe getting 5% of anything that comes in should be plain humiliated publicly if not punched in the face. Anyway, my point is its really up to people to stop being suckers, and thats the only way things can change.

One thing that you did not mention, UOJ was the fact that it is very common for Chassidic husbands whose wives are not being sexually satisfied by them to allow their wives to have boyriends. I lived in Boro Park for 5 years and my penetration into Boro Park culture was not that deep since I am not a yiddish speaker. Despite this, I know atleast three Chassidic women whose husbands allow young men to go up alone into their bedrooms with their wives and have sex with them or simply fool around with them depending on how much sin the particular woman and young man are up for. As long as the young man buy her gifts and spends money on her that the husband would rather not spend.

One of these young men actually fell in love with one of these women and divorced his wife and she divorced her husband and they got married together. It was quite a scandal and they removed him from being the Baal Koreh at a shul that I shall not mention.

Wife-swapping does not only go on in Teaneck and the Five Towns, it happens in Boro Park as well and apparently according to a very reliable source of mine in Canada, it is happening all the time in the Chabad community of Toronto.

Duane Hoffman said...

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/07/03/BA9S17JTO3.DTL

Duane Allen Hoffman, who says he lived lavishly by impersonating the rich and powerful, is down on his luck these days: He is stuck in San Francisco County Jail awaiting trial for theft and fraud.

Suffering from AIDS and in a wheelchair, he says he'll be a happier man when he obtains the fruits of his successful legal campaign for the right to wear a yarmulke in his cell.

To Hoffman, an Orthodox Jew, it's about equal treatment. Catholic inmates at the jail are allowed to have rosaries, he claims, and African Americans are free to cover their heads with do-rags.

But in April, the Sheriff's Department took away his yarmulke, a cap worn by religiously observant Jewish men, saying a razor could be hidden beneath it. Hoffman, 48, sued in federal court, alleging religious discrimination. Recently, Sheriff Michael Hennessey agreed Hoffman could have his yarmulke back, said spokeswoman Eileen Hirst. Despite the success, Hoffman says he won't drop his lawsuit until a judge orders the sheriff to provide yarmulkes to all inmates who want them.

"I admit I did things I am sorry for to get me here," he says. "But I had previously led an honorable, just and productive life, which always included devotion to my faith."

Hoffman describes himself as a "gentleman thief." He was arrested May 12, 2008, when he tried to have more than $800 in ties, shirts and cuff links from Neiman Marcus delivered to the downtown JW Marriott hotel, court records show.

Police said the credit card Hoffman used was stolen. Hoffman also is charged with using a stolen credit card to pay $10,000 in bills from three hotels in the city.

Overnight, Hoffman traded his 14th-floor room at the JW Marriott for a cell on the fifth floor of the jail adjacent to the Hall of Justice.

At first, Hoffman says, jailers allowed him to wear his yarmulke. But April 2, they took it away, allegedly after Hoffman filed a grievance complaining that jailers wouldn't allow a visiting rabbi to leave him a prayer shawl. He claims a jailer told him: "When you complain about something, you lose something else."

On April 23, Hoffman filed his handwritten lawsuit.

Hoffman's suit drew the sheriff's attention to "an inconsistency" in jail policy, said Hirst. The yarmulke will be provided through the jail commissary "to alleviate concerns about any contraband," she said. But, contrary to Hoffman's claim, she said the jail doesn't permit inmates to wear "do-rags," only see-through mesh "wave caps" to cover their hair.

In an interview in the jail, Hoffman spoke somberly about his medical condition, saying he was in great pain. But he spoke with some pride of the years before his arrest, when he claimed he had lived the life of a glamorous identity thief, with a passion for young men, fabulous clothes, fine hotels and elegant cufflinks.

In an account that couldn't be confirmed, he said he grew up in Connecticut, the only child of wealthy parents. His father was a German Holocaust survivor, he claimed.

Later, he said he lived the life of a "gentleman thief," defrauding "big companies and big institutions," spending lavishly, and partying with many men, which left him infected with HIV.

Hoffman's trial date hasn't been set. If convicted of all 18 charges filed against him, he could be sentenced to more than 50 years in prison. Even if acquitted, Hoffman says he doesn't think he has a lot of options. Within a couple of years, he says, his neurological system will break down and his medical condition will worsen.

His grim prospects make the yarmulke all the more important, he says.

"Being terminally ill, alone, and in the jail infirmary, one needs religious comfort to endure," he says.

WASHINGTON DC - Representatives of U.S. Bishops & two Orthodox Jewish associations examined the recent Note on Covenant & Mission from the US Conference of Catholic Bishop (USCCB) during a June 25 meeting in New York. The discussion was part of the regular consultation of the USCCB-Rabbinical Council of America/Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

The bishops issued A Note on Ambiguities Contained in Reflections on Covenant & Mission, June 18, to clarify aspects of a 2002 statement by a group of Catholic & Jewish scholars associated with a standing dialogue between the USCCB & the National Council of Synagogues. Some Catholic leaders had felt the efforts in “Reflections” to recognize the validity of the Jewish covenant appeared to undercut Catholic responsibility to witness to the entirety of the Christian faith.

At the June 25 meeting, David Berger, PhD, head of the Jewish Studies Department at Yeshiva College, New York, cited “grave” concerns of some in the Jewish community about the Note, which was prepared by the USCCB’s Committee on Doctrine & Committee on Ecumenical & Interreligious Affairs.

Orthodox Jews can tolerate any Christian view on the necessity of faith in Jesus Christ as savior of all, but they cannot agree to participate in an interfaith dialogue that is a cover for proselytism, Berger said.

Participants also discussed state legislation that would have rolled back the statutes of limitation on civil lawsuits that could be brought for alleged sexual abuse of minors, regardless of how long ago the alleged abuse occurred. The “Child Victims Act,” sponsored by Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (D-Maspeth), had the support of the Rabbinical Council of America, but was strongly opposed by the Catholic Church in New York for targeting private institutions.

Thomas Renker, General Counsel for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, reported that the State Catholic Conference endorsed an alternative proposal by Vito Lopez (D-Brooklyn) that would have included public schools, where cases of abuse of minors far exceed those in religious-based institutions. When the New York Assembly concluded its session on June 22, neither bill was put before the body.

Bishop Murphy said the Catholic Church has worked diligently in the past seven years to create safe environments for children & requires all church workers & volunteers to undergo training on how to detect signs of sexual abuse of minors. Eileen Puglisi, Rockville Centre’s Diocesan Director of the Office for the Protection of Children, distributed literature on the Review Board & counseling opportunities for victims of abuse.

Co-founded in 1998, by the late Cardinal John O’Connor, the consultation meets to discuss moral & cultural issues that impact Catholic & Jewish life. Previous meetings have addressed anti-religious bias in the media & peace initiatives to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Other Catholic members of the dialogue included Jesuit Father Drew Christiansen, Father Lawrence Frizzell, Seton Hall University; Father Lee Descoteaux, Diocese of Rockville Centre’s liaison to the Jewish community; and Father Dennis McManus, Georgetown University & Consultant to the USCCB on Jewish Affairs.

Jewish members included Howard Beigelman, Deputy Director of Public Policy, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America; Rabbi Basil Herring, Executive Vice President of the Rabbinical Council of America; Rabbi Yonatan Kaganoff, Rabbinical Council of America; Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President Emeritus of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America; Betty Ehrenberg, World Jewish Congress, American Section; Rabbi Joseph Karasick, Honorary President of the OU; and Rabbi Eric Greenberg, Director of Interfaith Policy, Anti-Defamation League.

Attorney Robert Powell pleaded guilty to charges of accessory after the fact and misprision of a felony this morning at the William J. Nealon Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Scranton.

The charges stem from a plea agreement filed in June where Powell acknowledged he knew that former Luzerne County judges Michael Conahan and Mark Ciavarella were committing crimes, but he failed to report those activities, as required by law, to federal authorities.

He further admits he helped Conahan and Ciavarella conceal their crimes by creating false records designed to disguise the source of kickbacks he and another person have admitted paying the judges. Those actions included transferring tens of thousands of dollars in cash to Conahan so that the money could not be traced.

When Powell is sentenced, he faces up to 5 1/2 years for each offense and fines up to $500,000.

Perhaps it is time to start naming names of the philandering husbands that are gouging a hole in the kedusha of the Jewish marriage. I don't live in Boro Park, and I am sure the problem is not for the majority of people. But I am just as sure that the problem factually exists. Even those that get caught and tossed out by their wives often remain well accepted in their shuls and communities. You'll see them strapping on their gartels, presumably to prevent "libo ro'eh es ha'ervah". They shukle and wave their grubby hands through shmona esrei, azoi farfrumt, maybe even twirling their payos a bit, just to make sure we all know they have them. We give them aliyos and even ask them to give the daf shiur. We shake their hands, thereby transfering their tinuf to ourselves.
I don't know how it was in the old days. Maybe people who wanted to feed their hedonism left the frum world and became frei. They actually had more respect for frumkeit than we do, calculating that if they couldn't abide by it, they should not be part of it. They couldn't stomach the shame. Today, we have no shame. We run to the whorehouse with our tzitis and payos and gartelach flying in the wind. And when we're done, we just put the black hat and jacket on and we're yeshivish again.
There was a saying years ago which summed it up succinctly.

Perhaps this is a major contributer to this tragedy. The Yeshivish velt has its own tragic way of brutally casting good idealistic people aside while it panders to the often VERY stupid balebatim, and if you have met these plentiful zombie-like types.

Yeah, many of them go to Daf Yomis and even maybe give them, but somehow they all look like defeated and deflated zombies going thru the motions when they are at it. If anyone has ever seen this, it's pathetic to watch, like having a compulsory shave every day, they are REALLY stupid oxen emotionally and intellectually who cannot talk or think about anything except how much money they made or lost today or yesterday or hope to make tomorrow, who never bothered to go anywhere (besides upstate New York) and do anything (besides waking up every day like prisoners of life) except to figure out the art of making oodles and oodles of money and getting the Roshei Yeshiva and Shtiebel Rebbelach, some even have access to bigger Rebbes whom they give pidoynes to as if they were worshipping Mamon itself, who then in turn run after them like bees to the honey!

Something to think about as Tisha Be'Av and the reasons for the ongoing Churban Bais HaMikdosh and our ongoing golus looms.

Also part of the tragedy, as written by a mother on another blog.

"In the past couple of years, this time around was usually my time to breathe a sigh of relief. All the kids were packed and shipped off to sleep away camp and I was having some leisure time in my bungalow. My kids were in the hands of safe and responsible staff members who insured their summer would be a meaningful experience, preparing them for the school year ahead. There was never a worry as to the exposure my children might have to bad influences, being that i had placed them in good hands.

This summer, things have had to change. Since my husband lost his job, we have joined the numerous families who are struggling to make ends meet. We are staying in the city this summer, and together with some of my friends are taking turns running a "mommy style" day camp. Instead of carpool, we rotate watching and entertaining the little ones. Our teenage girls decided to spend the summer being able to make some money and took mother helpers jobs in two different colonies.

I'm writing this letter, since I haven't slept all week, having sent my daughter off to the country. Since sending her off I have heard about the potential dangers taking place in the country for teenagers. I feel it is my obligation as a mother and as a Jew to share this with the YWN readers.

Apparently, there are things which take place on a nightly basis in the summer, alluring good frum teenage girls and boys, from the finest homes. There are house parties which run all night, where boys and girls come to meet each other, without their parents knowing. These parties are extremely easy to organize with just a simple mass text message which gets forwarded within a ten minute time span. As soon as an empty house, bungalow or location is designated, the teenagers come swarming from all over. I cant even imagine what goes on throughout the course of the night! All of this with good, frum boys and girls that are away for the summer, looking for a change of scenery from their day job.

I'm horrified to what our world has come to, I'm petrified about the exposure our innocent boys and girls can succumb to in just one summer, and I'm at a loss of words as to what we can do? Do we stop sending our children to the country as mothers helpers? As day camp counselors? Do we shield them from outside influences?

However that's just one night out of a whole week! What do we do about the rest of the week? How do we as a community spread the awareness to others and really allow for things to change. What forums, events, or safety guards can we offer the girls and boys sent off to fend for themselves this summer?

The scary part of this letter is that if I would have been reading it last summer, I would have brushed it off as "oy...so sad...but its not my daughters, baruch hashem. My girls are safe in camp. My girls are safe at home..etc" the painful part is that this summer it is my daughters who are at risk. My daughters who are at risk of the dangers described above, and possible dozens more that i may not even be aware of. The reality is, these are all our girls. We are a nation of achdus - each of those daughters, has to be viewed as if it was our own daughter out there in the country hills.

Please spread this awareness to your readers, and hopefully incite some good response and suggestions as to what can be done.

Sincerely,
A Loving Mother....Of Many Daughters."

Hi,We saw your blog about Paysakh Krohn and are absolutely sick. Our son was circumcised by Paysakh Krohn in April (at our Chabad with dear friend Rav Mendy Herson) and we had a similarly horrible experience. We all (including Rav Herson) deferred to Krohn's method assuming he had the credentials and experience to know what was best. The brit was barbaric and traumatic for all who attended. We've been wondering back and forth if we should do anything about it, and if we were just overreacting as first time parents. But seeing your site and the outrage from the community confirms our fears. There was much mention of the Poskim banning Krohn from performing circumcisions. Can you direct us to the specifics? Krohn told us he didn't use a Gomko clamp, but a device INVENTED BY HIS FATHER! From his email: "> the instrument is the circumceps which my father invented." This is particularly disturbing. We never would have allowed him to perform the bris with a device that hasn't been tested and approved by the FDA.Your blog mentions that your brother is a respected mohel. Might it be appropriate to have him look at our son? His pediatrician acknowledges that the circumcision looks strange but says they can all look different, so we're not getting a committed ruling from him either way. We are completely disgusted and now feel compelled to get to action to prevent this monster from torturing more children. Please do get back to us. Regards, ................

However, a Sunday Times report claimed that talks conducted by Mossad head Meir Dagan resulted in Saudi Arabia agreeing to let IAF jets fly over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran's nuclear facilities.

A New York congressman who is considering a Senate run posted a YouTube video calling Michael Jackson a "pervert" and questioning the exhaustive media coverage of the pop star's death.

Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican, said in the video posted Sunday that society is glorifying a "low-life" while hardworking teachers, police officers, firefighters and veterans don't get the credit they deserve.

"This guy was a pervert," King said in the video, shot Sunday by a staff member outside an American Legion hall. "He was a child molester. He was a pedophile. And to be giving this much coverage to him, day in and day out, what does it say about us as a country?"

The congressman called the coverage of Jackson's death too politically correct.

He said Jackson may have been a good singer and dancer but added: "The bottom line is, would you let your child or grandchild be in the same room with Michael Jackson?"

Ken Sunshine, a spokesman for Jackson's family, declined to respond to King's criticism. "We will not dignify this or any other statement with a comment," he said.

Coverage of the 50-year-old superstar's death and related matters such as the custody of his three children has dominated headlines and airwaves since Jackson died June 25.

King said he decided to post his video critique after speaking with constituents over the Fourth of July weekend.

"A number of them were mentioning to me, 'When's this stuff with Michael Jackson going to end?'" King said. "It's just too much."

R' Avraham Yehoshua of Brisk said this week when one of his bochrim was arrested, "Vos tut a bochur bei a mechoa?"

Eidah Charedis had a Kabbolas Shabbos on Bar Ilan to protest chillul Shabbos.

Thursday before that, the garbage outside my house was torched at 7:30. Bochrim who set it on fire, close to 100, sang Bar Yochai then left; the fun was over. While this had nothing to do with Shabbos - the mayor doesn't live on my street & it was an act of destruction - I had to live with smoke for hours. The bochrim had fun, but we who live on the block were inhaling black smoke & couldn't call the fire dept because it's a chilul HaShem.

I saw a man of 60 going back & forth with his little girl, carrying water to extinguish the flames. He did this for 2 hours. There are those that burn & those who are left to put out the flames.

I woke the next morning with pain in my heart & a scratchy throat. My rebbitzin told me of men & women hospitalized because of excessive smoke inhalation. I got off lucky.

Sunday, I was walking to my sister who lives on a quiet street. Two garbage bins were burning & 15 bochrim stood around; some threw in garbage, others just laughed & cheered. Again, rabbonim organized a mechoa on Shabbos, not Sunday. And they said that one shouldn't burn garbage.

Monday, I heard screaming. I saw bochrim roll out the garbage bin from our street to a block away. Smoke was rising. Other bochrim were rolling more bins from other blocks, some metal, some plastic.

It stabbed my heart, I was shaking. I watched bochrim carry cardboard to kindle flames. Like the rest, they were wearing hats & jackets, and like a very large percentage, speaking English.

My husband yelled, "What are you doing?"

They laughed. A bochur next door to us pleaded with the ones pulling our garbage. They ignored him.

For hours, we kept hearing animalistic screams. We decided we couldn't do anything anyway, so we remained inside. We went to bed with difficulty. Just as sounds would peter out, we heard inhuman screaming again. We heard things thrown & metal clattering. I would see these brave warriors pulling barricades that protect pedestrians on narrow sidewalks out of the cement.

At 1:30, I was still unable to sleep. Suddenly our air conditioner, on to block noise, not to keep cool, went off & our apartment went dark. It turns out the electricity of the entire area was blown because of the fire. The screaming on the street increased. I got dressed & went out.

The bochrim were very proud that they blew the electricity of a 3 block radius. After triumphant screams, they sang the tune of Carlebach Ani avdecha ben amasecha.

The irony was painful, I cried loudly, on the porch. My husband, Satmar geshtimt, of the Eidah, didn't stop me.

I could go on. There were horrible sights & sounds, finally petering out at 2:30.

What were those bochrim thinking?
Where was the tzelem Elokim when I heard words & sounds that should not come out of any human vocal chords, especially not of yeshivaleit? Where was basic compassion? Where was any sort of restraint when barricades, extremely important for safety on narrow sidewalks, were wrenched out with much effort? How did they have the heart to watch a small old man carrying his garbage 3 blocks away because that was the first place the bin was still there?

I didn't take pictures because I was disgusted. I regret it. I would have shown the pictures to mashgichim of the yeshivas, show them what their bochrim were doing. If 5 bochrim were kicked out of yeshiva, I bet these shenanigans would stop immediately.

Please don't respond with stories about Shabbos marches & gedolim of previous generations. This has nothing to do with it.

If you're a mother, know where your son is. If you're a friend, make sure you never justify the unjustifiable. If you're a fellow Jew, daven for these bochrim. Daven for peace in Yerushalayim.

Amir Gilboa said...

http://www.times-series.co.uk/news/4470494.Judge_spares_internet_paedophile_jail_term/

AN internet porn addict who was found to have more than 650 indecent images of children on his computer has been spared jail in what a judge described as a “mercy” sentence.

Former fitness instructor Amir Gilboa, of Nether Street, Finchley, was given a three month suspended sentence at Wood Green Crown Court yesterday.

The 36-year-old had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to downloading the files which included images and videos of children as young as seven.

The court heard how police raided the home of Gilboa and his wife, which they were sharing with others, last September. Officers discovered the 676 images on his personal computer and recorded them as levels one to five on the police scale of severity.

More than 450 images were level one, regarded as the least serious in terms of child pornography, although 89 were levels four and five.

Prosecuting barrister Lynn Fanshawe said it was agreed the images were not for distribution or gain, but only for the personal gratification of Gilboa.

She told the court the files were downloaded free from file sharing websites between April and September last year.

When he was arrested, he initially said a friend had downloaded them but admitted knowing they were on the computer. He later changed his account to say the friend had only stored the first few images, Ms Fanshawe said.

In defence, Jonathan Goldberg QC said Gilboa was an excellent son and caring brother, which made his behaviour seem even more “bizarre”.

Mr Goldberg said: “His friend was the first one who did it but he knew what he had done and carried on with it.

“The features here are very unusual and he doesn't show the profile associated with this type of offence.

“He assures me he has no real sexual interest in young people and has never lusted after children in the street.

“He doesn't fantasise let alone masturbate over children.”

Dressed smartly in a suit and tie, a cleanly shaven Gilboa spoke only to confirm his name to the court. He sat in the dock and sobbed, wiping away tears with a tissue, as evidence was read out to the court.

He added that Gilboa, a former student at Middlesex University who he described as “a good looking young man who has had a lot of girlfriends”, also visited adult porn websites while on his own.

His Honour Judge Francis Sheridan, said the use of the images over a six month period indicated a problem that needed addressing as well as an “unhealthy interest”.

He sentenced Gilboa to a three month sentence, suspended for two years and ordered him to attend an internet users treatment programme.

Judge Sheridan also handed down a sexual offences prevention order meaning Gilboa cannot work or be around children unsupervised for five years, during which time he will have to sign on to the sex offenders register.

Judge Sheridan said: “Every child in these images is a victim “If there wasn't people doing this the manufactures wouldn't have a market. Vile is insufficient to describe the images I have seen.

“A normal virile man of 36 doesn't usually have an interest in children under 16.

“This is a serious case because everybody treasures their children and no child should be subjected to such disgraceful abuse.

“This sentence is serious but I am going to suspend them as an act of mercy. If you do not stick to the terms I will guarantee a custodial sentence.”

Addressing Gilboa directly across the court room, he added:“You come from a distinguished family of hard working, decent people.

“What would your grandparents have thought of you robbing those children of their innocence for your own gratification?

“As victims of the holocaust, take a moment to think what they would have made of you.

“The Jewish community is proud of their emphasis on family life and it is little wonder that you have been shamed the people who know you and liked you.”

Regarding GREEDY LIAR psychotherapists in the frum community said...

Frum therapists know better than anyone else how much help victims in the frum community need. Yet almost every one of them with an advanced degree REFUSES to take ANY type of insurance while charging at least $200 an hour.

They are quick to trot out the usual b.s. excuse about insurance companies supposedly not paying but their excuses cannot be invoked in the case of high end PPO plans.

Someone in our family is an abuse victim. One of the only frum therapists who takes insurance is able to get $115 from the PPO plan for only 45 minutes and he does not even have an advanced degree. He is not an MD or Phd.

A big shot board certified developmental pediatrician who spends 90 intensive minutes (twice as long) with our child is paid $10 less than the shrink at $105.

A hospital chief of department allergist / immunologist who does a series of tests over 30 minutes is paid only about $40 more.

A chief of department at a major hospital who did a very comprehensive examination, took x-rays and performed a minor surgical procedure in his office, was paid $225 - only $110 dollars more than the shrink with a mediocre degree.

The frum therapists may not get over their greed to help the community, but at least expose them for their deceit.

Not long ago, a cardiology fellow who had been interviewing for jobs came to my office, clearly disillusioned. “I was naïve,” he said. “I never thought of medicine as a business. I thought we were in it to take care of patients. But I guess it is.”

Of course, there has always been a profit motive in medicine.

Jonathan Boxman, an owner and operator of real estate title insurance companies, has been charged with defrauding clients of title companies he controlled of more than $1.7 million.

According to the criminal complaint, Boxman stole money that was entrusted to those companies and used it to pay operating expenses associated with his failing businesses.

Boxman, 46, surrendered to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Monday morning.

According to the complaint, Boxman controlled Titledge Insurance Company of New York, a real estate title insurance company licensed by the State of New York, and various other title abstract companies and agents. A title abstract company or agent performs title searches and other functions on behalf of a title insurance company, including issuing title insurance policies in the title insurance company’s name, recording mortgages and deeds, and holding money in escrow. Through his companies and bank accounts, Boxman received fees for the recording of mortgages and deeds, which, in turn, he was supposed to remit to the county where the deed or mortgage was recorded.

However, instead of paying the fees to the counties, Boxman allegedly transferred the money to accounts he controlled and used it to pay his companies’ operating expenses and to cover thefts from prior victims of his scheme. The complaint charges that between January 2006 and December 2008, Boxman stole over $1.7 million in recording taxes, other fees, and monies held in escrow, and that as a result of his scheme several mortgages and deeds were never recorded.

If convicted of wire fraud, Boxman faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years of imprisonment.
