The UOJ Archives - September 3, 2007
Dear UOJ,
After I wrote the article on August 2 about my experience with a predator (read here) I was contacted by someone with a horrifying story that demands immediate action. This reader identified the man in my story and he painstakingly relayed details of his own ghastly experiences with this monster over three decades ago. This child molester has been targeting innocent children (and young adults) in Boro Park for over thirty years and nothing has been done! I am seeking any information on BEREL GOLDMAN, such as where he lives and where he is employed. Action (within the parameters of the law) will be taken and I pity him (and his employer) if he is currently still in chinuch.
I shudder when I think of how many victims he must have ruined for so many years. UOJ, there is a fire raging in Boro Park and it must be extinguished! The attitude of cover-up in the chassidishe velt is fueled by a clannish attitutude that is worse than the shanda of the Kolko/Margulies/Scheinberg/Belsky fiasco.
Here is the tell-all email that was sent to me by someone who has never recovered from the pain he suffered as an innocent child.
UOJ & friends, this is not a sensational piece of yellow quasi-journalism. This is a serious matter that requires the help of your vast audience. I and this victim implore the community to provide further information on:
Berel Goldman
Age: mid-to-upper 50’s
Height: approx 5’6
Built: Stocky
Hair/Beard: black with streaks of gray
Skin color: olive
Eyes: blue (a little bloodshot)
This monster wears chassidishe garb and has been seen walking around Boro Park and Flatbush and often engages in seemingly harmless conversation with young men and children.
Email sent to me:
Hello,
It took me a few days to get the courage to write back to you since I am still haunted by this guy and it brings back to me very bad memories that will live with me for the rest of my life....
I would hope that this letter gets posted on the UOJ blog and gets to the appropriate channels so that we get rid of this pervert and molester once and for all...
I have kept this in me for many years and I want to get it out of my system at this time...
I am now in my lower forties now and this started around 35 years ago when I was in the fourth grade in the Bobover Yeshiva..
The guy who we are talking about was my rebbe that year and his name is Berel Goldman...
He was in his low twenties at that time, he was very strong and muscular and he used to take me and lift me up with his hands and seat me on his lap and flex his big muscles at me and ask me if i liked it and while on his lap he would touched me all over including my penis thru my pants.
One day in middle of the year after I got to sit on his lap again, he told me to come out of the classroom with him and he took me to the bathroom and he locked the door and he exposed his penis to me and told me to rub it with my hands, I get very scared and terrified but he grabbed my hand and forced me to rub him while he unzipped my pants and was fondling my penis until he masturbated, of course at that age I did not know what this was and I started to cry, he told me that I better not tell anybody or he would punish me...I was scared and did not .a week later he did it to another kid in the class..he happened to tell his mother about it, and she called my mother and told her that he did it to me also, my mother asked me about it and I told her what happened..My mother and the other lady went to the principal and told him, and the answer was that he can not do anything about it, since this rebbe is from a prominent family in the shul and he does not want to ruin their name, our parents were furious and I left the yeshiva for a different yeshiva for the rest of the year and returned only the following year..He continued being a rebbi for a few years until he was fired and the reason was because the principal's son was to enter his grade...
After he was fired, he went to the Viener Yeshiva and was fired from there too..
Since I know him from shul, I know that he did not stop and he continues to molest kids and teenagers in shuls and in yeshivas and in mikvas..
I wrote this email with my heart full of pain of what this guy did to me and to many others...
Thank You Very Much

The first person to email a clear snapshot of Berl Goldman gets a free UOJ hat. Pictures taken from a cell phone are fine - as long as he is recognizable.

Shmarya was right all along. The only aitzah for Black women is for White men to pursue them.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/04/us/04interracial.html
It is a familiar lament of single African-American women: where are the “good” black men to marry?
A new study shows that more and more black men are marrying women of other races. In fact, more than 1 in 5 black men who wed (22 percent) married a nonblack woman in 2008. This compares with about 9 percent of black women, and represents a significant increase for black men — from 15.7 percent in 2000 and 7.9 percent in 1980.
Sociologists said the rate of black men marrying women of other races further reduces the already-shrunken pool of potential partners for black women seeking a black husband.
“When you add in the prison population,” said Prof. Steven Ruggles, director of the Minnesota Population Center, “it pretty well explains the extraordinarily low marriage rates of black women.”
Among all married African-Americans in 2008, 13 percent of men and 6 percent of women had a nonblack spouse. This compares with nearly half of American-born Asians choosing non-Asian spouses.
“The continuing imbalance in the rates for black men and black women could be making it even harder for black women to find a husband,” said Prof. Andrew J. Cherlin, director of the population center at Johns Hopkins University.
The study, to be released Friday by the Pew Research Center, found that intermarriage among Asian, black, Hispanic and white people now accounts for a record 1 in 6 new marriages in the United States. Tellingly, blacks and whites remain the least-common variety of interracial pairing. Still, black-white unions make up 1 in 60 new marriages today, compared with fewer than 1 in 1,000 back when Barack Obama’s parents wed a half-century ago.
While the increased rate of intermarriage reflects demographic changes in the American population — a more diverse pool of available spouses — as well as changing social mores, they may presage a redefinition of America’s evolving concepts of race and ethnicity.

Yussi Rieder, a wealthy Boro Park community activist is considering mounting a run against newly elected Council Member David Greenfield, according to several sources that have spoken with him.
Rieder, a real estate developer, hails from one of the most prominent neighborhood families and serves on the board of local Jewish Community Council.
And Rieder has donated heavily to politicians over both parties, sending over $10,000 to Sens. Joe Lieberman, George Allen, Frank Lautenberg, as well as Rep. Ed Towns over the past two election cycles.
“He is very wealthy,” said one Boro Park source. “If he wanted to self-fund, he could self-fund 10 races in a row.”
Reider is considering whether or not to run in a Democratic primary in September or to seek multiple lines in November, according to a source who discussed the matter with him.
Reider did not return several phone calls for comment.
Greenfield won a contentious special election for the City Council in March after incumbent Simcha Felder resigned to become a deputy comptroller under John Liu. Rieder backed Greenfield’s opponent Joe Lazar, who was also backed by local political Assembly Member Dov Hikind, the local kingmaker. Greenfield has to run for election to the remainder of the term in the fall.
Greenfield won with the support of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but has surprised several local community groups by publicly clashing with the administration over its slashing of funding for day care centers and after-school programs.
Greenfield also angered Rieder by not reappointing him to the Community Board after he was elected.
“Rieder is well-respected, he is exactly the type of person you would want on the community board,” said one local activist. “If he runs against David, it’s going to be World War III.”

The number of Americans receiving food stamps topped 40 million for the first time in March as the jobless rate hovered near a 26-year high.
Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases totaled 40.2 million, up 21 percent from a year earlier and 1.2 percent more than in February, the Department of Agriculture said yesterday on its Web site.
Food aid climbed as the unemployment rate stayed at 9.7 percent in March for a third straight month, near levels last seen in 1983, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The new license plates that have begun popping up on the streets of New York are a money raiser for the state, but that’s not they only way the state is sticking it to motorists. There are higher fees for just about everything.
It may be no coincidence that the state’s new license plates are called “Empire Gold” because the new plates — with their higher fees — will turn out to be a gold mine for the state.
New York’s 9 million drivers are furious because in a rush to raise money — and to make it seem like they weren’t raising taxes — the Legislature increased fees on just about everything having to do with driving.
* The cost of license plates went from $15 to $25
* Driver licenses from $50 to $64.50
* Car registrations from $44 to $55
* And when you register your car you have to pay a county “use tax” of $10 to $60
And there’s another new fee you probably don’t know about. If you live in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority region it will cost you an extra $50 to register your car. For the privilege of driving you pay a transit surcharge.
Some might call that wishful thinking because the hard truth about the Legislature is that it will raise motor vehicle fees whenever its thinks it can get away with it, knowing that few will give up their cars.

The top aide to Gov. David A. Paterson will lead New York City’s troubled Off-Track Betting Corporation, whose chairman resigned on the eve of the Belmont Stakes, New York’s largest racing event, officials said on Saturday.
The chairman, Meyer S. Frucher, whom Gov. Paterson appointed to the position a year ago, submitted a resignation letter to the governor on Friday. In the letter, he cited the failure of his plan to revive the betting operation, which has posted losses for years and filed for bankruptcy protection. It also was the focus of a critical state audit last year

Those who know Shamai Leibowitz of Silver Spring, Md. describe him as a doting father, enchanting Torah reader and, above all, a trusted member of the community.
But a recently revealed other side to Leibowitz’s life has some reacting with disbelief and shock.
Last week, Leibowitz, 39, the Shabbat Torah reader at Har Tzeon-Agudath Achim, a Conservative synagogue in Silver Spring, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for leaking classified government documents to a blogger last year while serving as a linguist for the FBI.
The episode has sent the family into a Kafkaesque nightmare full of legal, financial and familial hardships, according to Leibowitz’s wife, Hagit, who penned a missive last month to U.S. District Judge Alexander Williams Jr., asking for a lenient jail sentence.
“There are no words to describe the trials and tribulations that I went through in the past year,” wrote the Judaics and Hebrew teacher at the Hebrew Day Institute in Rockville. “Since the investigation began, my life has been turned upside down and my family has been in constant upheaval.”
While most of those contacted were reticent to speak publicly, citing the sensitive nature of the case, the synagogue’s rabbi, Reuben Landman, said he was surprised by how the court proceedings played out.
Details surrounding the case are murky, as federal prosecutors have refused to reveal exactly what information was contained in the leaked documents or the identity of the blogger who received them.
The judge, in a peculiar twist, revealed in court last week that even he hadn’t been privy to many details, including the nature of the disclosed information and its national security impact.
Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of the Orthodox Ohev Shalom-The National Synagogue in Washington described Leibowitz, a native Israeli who moved to the area in 2004, as “a person of deep integrity.”
Herzfeld went on to lament the manner in which both the prosecution and court handled the case.
According to Politico, Leibowitz’s 20-month sentence is among the harshest ever doled out to a government employee accused of leaking classified information to a reporter.
“I’m shocked,” said (Leib Pinter's mechutan) Rabbi Herzel Kranz of the Orthodox Silver Spring Jewish Center, explaining that the news reports he has read leave “very serious questions to be asked.”
“This is not the America I know,” Kranz said. “How can you be sentenced for a crime when the judge doesn’t know what the crime is?”
Members of Leibowitz’s synagogue and the wider Jewish community have on several occasions provided the Leibowitz family with financial assistance for mounting legal bills. In addition, the shul has allowed the family temporarily to live free of charge in a shul-owned guest house located near the synagogue
Leibowitz comes from a relatively famous family. His grandfather, Yeshayahu, was an Israeli philosopher and scientist known mostly for his controversial views on halachah, Jewish law, and politics. The family’s prominence may be “one of the factors that played a role in the government’s decision” to pursue the case against Leibowitz, Landman said, explaining that a high-profile case can act as a deterrent to other would-be leakers.
Leibowitz also raised some eyebrows in 2002, when he compared convicted Palestinian terrorist Marwan Barghouti to Moses; Leibowitz was a member of Barghouti’s defense team.
“According to some lawyers, he should be called a terrorist, but according to Exodus, he is a freedom fighter,” Leibowitz said, according to an October 2002 report by The New York Times.
Sources indicate that his participation in that case caused some in the local Orthodox community to shun him.
The new Student Aid Act also moychels loans after 20 years, punishes mostly white colleges with high tuition and gives an unfair advantage to Obama's bros and sistahs.
No wonder the Wall St Journal accuses Obama of turning govt into a big money to Blacks.
