Except it's never quite clear where the money is going, or whether those donations are going to feed the homeless or pamper the rich. And, as the police tell it, walking into the street to collect money, legitimate charity or not, is illegal.
Critics claim that rather than helping the needy locally as donors may believe, money given to New Life ends up in Tampa where Deeper Life founder, "bishop" Melvin Jefferson, lives a life of luxury.
In 1999, the church itself and five members were convicted in a $20,000 food-stamp fraud ring. Jefferson and his wife were also arrested, but were both acquitted.
Jerusalem Magistrate's Court Judge Dov Pollock said yesterday that law-enforcement authorities did not fully investigate possible allegations that a maintenance and security firm provided illegal benefits to government figures including Ministers Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and Yuval Steinitz, and former minister Nissim Dahan.
Pollock was referring to Merhav, a cleaning and security company whose executives were charged two years ago with bribing government officials. The executives - Moshe Shaked and Danny Yakobi - were indicted along with Eitan Bodkov, who was coordinator of the tenders committee of the Rabbinical Courts, and Yafa Eliav, deputy director of the services and assets department in the Health Ministry.
According to the original indictment, Merhav provided and paid for the services of a cleaning woman who worked in Bodkov's home, to the tune of NIS 1,200 per month between the years 2000 and 2004. The indictment also states that the company installed a steel-reinforced door at a cost of NIS 4,000 in Eliav's home just before the Health Ministry was to decide which company would win a major tender for cleaning services, in 2002. Furthermore, Merhav ostensibly gave a job to Eliav's companion.
Bodkov and Eliav are alleged to have advanced Merhav's business interests in exchange for bribes.
Reuven also told police that Merhav provided cleaning services to former Shas leader Aryeh Deri.

For a guy under Aron Shechter's thumb, he should know that true Chaim Berliners run to the nearest goyish owned bar to buy beers that are 100% chometz to make havdalah for sending off Pesach claiming it's a minhag HaGra, so why does toady Mordy spew his hate against pizza lovers?:

In about one month the Lakewood VAAD will be endorsing Senator Bob Singer in Lakewood’s township committee election. The opponent of Singer who the Lakewood VAAD doesn’t support is a man by the name of Hershel Herskowitz.
Herskowitz has been one of the more outspoken voices in Lakewood on wasteful spending and corruption. Herskowitz is also the current chair of Lakewood’s downtown committee. He has gone to great efforts to address Lakewood’s problem of illegal immigrants, reckless driving, and the amount of money that Lakewood wastes in tax dollars on the Blue Claws.
Herskowitz remains the underdog, but does have a growing following in Lakewood. If Hershel defeats Singer in spite of the Lakewood VAAD’s endorsement it won’t only signify the decline of Senator Singer’s 30 year career in politics, but also the end of the Lakewood VAAD.
The Lakewood VAAD has fallen out of favor with some members of the Lakewood community as of recent years. They failed to rally the support of the Lakewood community behind Jon Corzine in 2009. If they fail to rally the support of the community behind Senator Singer their endorsement will become virtually worthless.
(JTA) -- Sen. Charles Schumer's criticism of the Obama administration's Israeli policy drew a rebuke from the White House.

The national debt and Washington’s deficit of will
By Joel Achenbach
Sunday, April 25, 2010; B01
Bill Gross is used to buying bonds in multibillion-dollar batches. But when it comes to U.S. Treasury bills, he’s getting nervous. Gross, a founder of the investment giant Pimco, is so concerned about America’s national debt that he has started unloading some of his holdings of U.S. government bonds in favor of bonds from such countries as Germany, Canada and France.
Gross is a bottom-line kind of guy; he doesn’t seem to care if the debt is the fault of Republicans or Democrats, the Bush tax cuts or the Obama stimulus. He’s simply worried that Washington’s habit of spending today the money it hopes to collect tomorrow is getting worse and worse. It even has elements of a Ponzi scheme, Gross told me.
“In order to pay the interest and the bill when it comes due, we’ll simply have to issue more IOUs. That, to me, is Ponzi-like,” Gross said. “It’s a game that can never be finished.”
The national debt -- which totaled $8,370,635,856,604.98 as of a few days ago, not even counting the trillions owed by the government to Social Security and other pilfered trust funds ...
Avi Shafran(ovitch) has a good point for a change.
Gary Rosenblatt keeps trying to weasel in misrepresentations to fool people into believing that all kinds of fringe groups supporting women rabbis are "orthodox". Rosenblatt was always a supporter of Emmanuel Rackman and his mamzerus inspiring bittul kiddushin and has now been pushing for women rabbis by outright lying that various backers are "orthodox"
Shafran(ovitch) catches the lie here that Kehilat Orach Eliezer is "orthodox" when even they refuse to call themselves orthodox and the temple is even named after a Conservative leader.
Assessing Jewish Identity of Author Killed by Nazis
By PATRICIA COHEN
The first novel of Irène Némirovsky’s that most people read was the last one she wrote. Némirovsky, the Russian Jewish author, died at Auschwitz in 1942 at 39
But along with the belated publication came charges from a handful of critics that Némirovsky, killed because she was a Jew, was herself an anti-Semite who courted extreme right-wing friends and wrote ugly caricatured portraits of Jews.
What motivated Némirovsky, Mr. Philipponnat and Mr. Lienhardt argue, were deep and complex feelings about her Russian-Jewish bourgeois background, shtetl Jews and, in particular, an overwhelming loathing for her mother
Charges of anti-Semitism first surfaced in 1929 after Némirovsky’s novel “David Golder” was published. Némirovsky, who said she was repeatedly playing out the relationship with her mother in her fiction, based the characters loosely on her family. She was 26 at time — the same age as Philip Roth when he wrote “Goodbye, Columbus,” a book that also earned its author the label of a “self-hating Jew.”
Némirovsky converted to Roman Catholicism. Distancing her family from the lower-class Jews of Eastern Europe, Némirovsky considered herself a “respectable” not an “unwanted foreigner,” as she wrote Marshal Pétain, the head of the Vichy government in 1940 — in other words, a “French bourgeois, pure and simple.”
But as Mr. Philipponnat and Mr. Lienhardt write in their final chapter, from the day the gendarmes arrested her, Irène Némirovsky “ceased to be a novelist, a mother, a wife, a Russian, a Frenchwoman: she was just a Jewess.”
AMSTERDAM (AP) -- The Dutch Catholic Church rejected criticism Monday for failing to check the background of a volunteer who had served a seven-year prison sentence in the U.S. for child abuse.
Defrocked Irish priest Oliver O'Grady did volunteer work for a church in Rotterdam for less than two years, and left the Netherlands in February before his identity became known.
O'Grady was the subject of an award-winning 2006 documentary, ''Deliver Us from Evil,'' in which he spoke openly of abusing more than 20 children and acknowledged that he was allowed to remain a priest after confessing to his bishop about the molestation.
A statement from the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests in the U.S. said the Dutch church ''should be severely disciplined for failing to do even the most simple background check on this dangerous predator.''
Peter Kohnen, spokesman for the Dutch Bishop's Conference, said the community was ''shocked'' when Dutch television aired the documentary earlier this month and some parishioners recognized O'Grady.
But Kohnen said the diocese had no reason to investigate him, since he was a volunteer and did not seek any official function.
Kohnen said O'Grady helped at a Rotterdam church that catered to expatriates, mainly by selecting the music. No one knew who he was, and he was using a different name.
''If they had checked, they wouldn't have found anything,'' he said.
O'Grady had a job in Rotterdam working for a fast food restaurant, Kohnen said.
O'Grady was deported to Ireland in 2001 after serving his sentence in a California state prison for molesting two brothers. Since then, the Diocese of Stockton has faced several lawsuits from alleged victims.
Despite President Obama’s various attempts to thwart his critics by adamantly denying that he is a socialist, his connection to Bertha Lewis and ACORN tells another story. In a speech given before the Young Democratic Socialists (yes, you read that correctly), ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis admits, “Any of these groups that say I’m young, I’m Democratic, and I’m a socialist is all right with me.”
You might be wondering how the confession of socialist Lewis denotes Obama’s affiliations with the socialism. In a recently released video clip, Barack Obama admits, “I definitely welcome ACORN’s input. You don’t have to ask me about that, I’m going to call you [ACORN], even if you [ACORN] didn’t ask me.” Flattery gets you everywhere, Mr. President! He continues, “Since I’ve been in the United States Senate, I’ve been always a partner with ACORN as well. I’ve been fighting with ACORN, alongside ACORN, on issues you care about my entire career.”

Mortgage fraud incidents rise 7% last year
By Adrian Sainz, AP Real Estate Writer
MIAMI — Incidents of residential mortgage fraud increased last year, a sign that scammers are still targeting the industry despite more diligent efforts to find and report it.
The number of mortgage fraud reports among loans made in 2009 grew 7%, a smaller increase than the 26% jump the previous year, according to a study released Monday by the LexisNexis Mortgage Asset Research Institute.
As for the types of fraud, misrepresentation of information on mortgage applications accounted for 59% of reported incidents. Fraud related to appraisals was second, increasing to 33% of reported incidents last year from 22% in 2008.
Other types of fraud included verifications of deposits or employment, escrow or closing costs, and credit reports.
Despite increased reporting efforts, mortgage fraud "is significantly understated, even during times of massive origination volumes," said Jennifer Butts, manager of data processing for the institute.
The information collected in the 12th annual report comes from about 600 mortgage companies.
Since the housing bust, lenders have tightened underwriting standards, requiring larger down payments, stronger credit histories and reliable proof of income. Law enforcement agencies have created investigative teams to fight mortgage fraud. These efforts should make it harder for consumers and unscrupulous industry professionals to commit fraud.
The slower growth rate is being attributed to better reporting and policing. But rhe report also says more scammers are using technology to access information and allow them to remain anonymous by using the Internet.
"It remains critical for those in the mortgage industry to reassess their processes, work together by sharing information and reporting incidents of fraudulent activity, and ready themselves for more complex schemes in order to continue the fight against mortgage fraud," said Denise James, a co-author of the report.
Among states, Florida moved into the top spot for mortgage fraud, displacing Rhode Island, which led the nation in 2008 but dropped out of the top 10 in 2009. Florida had nearly three times the expected amount of reported mortgage fraud for the volume of loans created there.
New York, California, Arizona and Michigan completed the top five states for mortgage fraud. Eight of the top 10 states are in the eastern half of the U.S.
Rhode Island wasn't ranked in 2009 because the state's sample size did not meet the minimum requirements for the survey, the institute said.
I hope this note finds you well. I recently received a phone call from the father of a victim in the case The People v. Michael Sabo. On Friday, April 30, 2010, Mr. Sabo has a bail hearing for a $2 million bail. The hearing will take place in the Brooklyn Supreme Court at 320 Jay Street, 4th floor, Part 50. Judge Walsh is the residing judge. Court proceedings typically begin at 10:00 am. I will keep you posted of a more definite time. It came to my attention that while friends were raising this money in Sabo's neighborhood, they mistakenly tried to get money from a family whose child is a victim.
The father has cried out for help and I told him that we will try to help him. During a prior hearing in court, the father and the ADA on this case, confirmed that the defense attorney showed that the defendant is innocent, as he pointed out all of his supporters in the court room. We need to be there for him, even though this case has not yet begun. I personally invite you to join me this Friday if your schedule allows it.
Thank you in advance for your support. Best regards.
WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Two major international accounting firms cut ties with Iran.
The decision by PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young, reported last Friday by The New York Times, means all of the "big four" international auditors have severed ties with the Islamic Republic.
Losing access to the approval of the major auditors could discourage risk-averse investors.
Prosecutors reject the notion that Rubashkin is in any way a sympathetic figure, saying in sentencing documents that the meat packing mogul "cheated a bank and others out of a staggering amount of money - more than $26 million," and thus qualifies for a life sentence. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney in Northern Iowa told ABC News his office has been monitoring the campaign to influence the sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, and officials there are concerned by it.
"There seems to be an orchestrated effort to spread misinformation and raise people's concerns falsely about this case," said Bob Tig, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Iowa. "We're seeing thousands of emails, we've seen recent letters by a former congressman. There's an insistent thread of misinformation that runs through all of it."
The campaign to characterize prosecutors as zealous and seed doubts about the fairness of a life sentence, overseen by Rubashkin's Washington, D.C., legal and public relations teams, has enlisted help from five of the nation's former top law enforcement officials, Attorneys General Nicholas de B. Katzenbach (President Johnson), Ramsey Clark (Johnson), Edwin Meese III (President Reagan), Dick Thornburgh (Reagan), and William Barr (George H.W. Bush).
A year earlier, Ben Haim, at the time the principal rabbi at the Congregation Ohel Yaacov in Deal, bluntly stated, "I'm a money launderer. .. I'm going to be arrested."
Ben Haim wears an ankle monitor and must carry a global positioning device when he travels to New York City's five boroughs.
Previously, the court had denied Ben Haim's request to remove his electronic monitor so that he could immerse himself in a "mikvah," a traditional Jewish ritual bath. Ben Haim has also not been permitted to stay overnight at his daughter's Lakewood home.
Another money-laundering defendant, Rabbi Saul Kassin, 87, of Brooklyn, has been permitted to travel to Israel and to Florida, according to court documents. Kassin is spiritual leader of the 75,000-member Syrian Jewish community in Brooklyn.
Ben Haim, the government contends, was at the heart of an international money-laundering scheme, with a connection to an Israeli man, "I.M.," who was a ready source of cash.
During one meeting in Brooklyn, Ben Haim spoke with Dwek about his source.
Ben Haim said he talked to the man every day or every other day, and said in the past four years, the Israeli had the rabbi send out wires, under different names, all over the world, from Australia to New Zealand to Uganda, according to the FBI's complaint.
"It's unbelievable. I never saw anything like it," Ben Haim said, according to court documents. "I mean every country imaginable. Turkey, you can't believe it. . . . All different names. It's never the same name . . . Switzerland, everywhere, France, everywhere, Spain . . . China, Japan."
At one point, according to court records, Ben Haim also told Dwek that I.M. wanted him to open a bank account in Geneva, Switzerland, through which he could launder cash for another individual. Ben Haim told Dwek that I.M. wanted him to deposit as much as $30 million per year into this account, for which he would earn approximately $1.5 million annually.
Police arrested 19 men who they say solicited an undercover officer, including one man who offered her $10 and a box of Tastykakes in exchange for a sex act.
All 19 men from Monmouth and Ocean counties were charged with solicitation of prostitution. They offered the undercover officer amounts ranging from $10 to $100 in exchange for a sex act, police said.
The Orthodox Union and the Philadelphia-based Tasty Baking Company announced today that the company’s familiar Tastykake products are now certified kosher by the Orthodox Union.
A storied 92-year-old American Jewish advocacy group is looking to save its staff and programs from termination by merging with a larger organization, over a year after losing its financial base in the Madoff swindle.
The American Jewish Congress, founded in 1918 by Jewish luminaries such as Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter and Rabbi Stephen Wise, lost much of its assets when the multibillion-dollar Bernard Madoff investment fraud collapsed in December 2008.
Even before the financial collapse, which may have cost the group as much as 90 percent of its roughly $24 million endowment, the congress lacked a large membership and donor base.
According to its Internal Revenue Service Form 990 for 2008, its net assets dropped from $16.9m. in 2007 to $3.8m. in 2008. It has spent much of the time since the collapse trying to find a replacement financial base.
Now, The Jerusalem Post has learned, the organization is speaking to the American Jewish Committee in an effort to initiate some type of merger with the much larger advocacy group
Shula Zaken, who served as the bureau chief of former prime minister Ehud Olmert, was arrested on arrival at Ben Gurion Airport at 3 pm today. A four-man police team took her into custody for questioning by the National Fraud Squad about her involvement in the Holyland case, to which she has been linked.
The Holyland case continues to spread. According to defense lawyers Adv. Eli Cohen and Adv. Giora Zilbershtein, the Israel Police have been questioning "mediator" Meir Rabin, who was arrested three weeks ago in the Holyland case, about alleged transfers of $1 million to top political figures. Figures reportedly include Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Minister of Foreign Affairs Avigdor Lieberman, and former ministers MK Ruhama Avraham-Balila (Kadima) and Danny Naveh.
At the opening of today's meeting of his Israel Beiteinu faction, party chairman Lieberman said, "I've been disappointed in recent days. The Holyland, kidnappings, wasn’t involved at all. I woke up this morning, and I was pleased to hear that my name was dragged into the affair, and not for the first time, nor for the last. I felt happy and satisfied. I'm in good company with Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. I'm pleased that I was not forgotten."

An Israeli man has been imprisoned for 10 years for tricking women into sexual acts by claiming his semen was holy and had healing powers. Nissim Aharon, a former employee at the Israeli defence ministry, was convicted of rape, sodomy, indecent acts and aggravated fraudulent acquisition. Women paid him large sums of money, believing he was a holy rabbi who could heal body and soul, the court said. Judges called his actions "monstrous", exploiting "women young and old". The sentence was the result of a plea bargain, and was handed down at Petah Tikvah district court. Under it, Aharon will also have to pay 100,000 Israeli shekels ($26,866) to each of five women who filed the complaint against him. 'Holy fluid' Aharon, who was arrested last August, "over many years presented himself as a righteous man, as a saint with healing powers, who exploited the naivity of women and teenage girls, while carrying out appalling sexual acts and obtaining large sums of money by fraud," the Israeli Justice Ministry said in a statement. He would claim to be a rabbi, and impersonate figures in authority who would then refer women and teenage girls to himself, the ministry said. "He would give these people different explanations: among others, that a holy scent comes from him, and that his semen is a holy fluid, which by contact could heal body and soul," the statement said. He would also claim that his "holiness" could be passed to those who touched him physically, cleansing their bodies, it said. Aharon also pretended that he worked in posts in the security establishment, including for the Israeli intelligence services Mossad and Shin Bet, the ministry said. "His behaviour is despicable and even monstrous," the judges said. "There are no words to describe the ugliness of his actions... The sexual offences are severe and numerous. "His sexual appetite could not be satisfied. There were no means that he would not use in order to exploit women young and old," the judges said.
NEW YORK, April 22 (Reuters) - An unidentified executive at Smithtown Bancorp Inc (SMTB.O) is an "informant" in an investigation of fraud allegations against the New York bank's chief executive, Bradley Rock, according to a lawsuit filed on Thursday.
The lawsuit on behalf of the bank's biggest shareholder in 2009, real estate investor Robert Toussie, alleges that Rock -- chairman of the American Bankers Association from October 2007 to November 2008 -- misrepresented the bank's financial health and concealed its distress.

Dear Fellow Victim Advocates,
I hope this note finds you well.

Bush).

http://www.app.com/article/20100426/NEWS/100426036/Rabbi-on-tape--I-m-a-money-launderer--I-m-going-to-be-arrested
A year earlier, Ben Haim, at the time the principal rabbi at the Congregation Ohel
Yaacov in Deal, bluntly stated, "I'm a money launderer.
Ben Haim, the government contends, was at the heart of an international
money-laundering scheme, with a connection to an Israeli man, "I.M.," who was a ready source of cash.
I never saw anything like it," Ben Haim said, according to
court documents. "I mean every country imaginable. Turkey, you can't believe it. . . . All different names. It's never the same name . . . Switzerland, everywhere, France, everywhere, Spain . . . China, Japan."
At one point, according to court records, Ben Haim also told Dwek that I.M. wanted
him to open a bank account in Geneva, Switzerland, through which he could launder cash for another individual. Ben Haim told Dwek that I.M. wanted him to deposit as much as $30 million per year into this account, for which he would earn approximately $1.5 million annually.

'Holy fluid'
Aharon, who was arrested last August, "over many years presented himself as a righteous man, as a saint with healing powers, who exploited the naivity of women and teenage girls, while carrying out appalling sexual acts and obtaining large sums of money by fraud," the Israeli Justice Ministry said in a statement.
