Even before the corona pandemic, the ultra-Orthodox community was traveling on an unsustainable trajectory. Their high birth rate, lack of secular education, and dependence on social welfare posed enormous challenges for the frum. The pandemic only exacerbated these challenges a hundred-fold.

● Survival of the Frummest ●

By: Rabbi Yossi Newfield

For long stretches of Jewish history, being a practising traditional or religious Jew meant living a life in accordance with Mosaic law, but not in overt conflict with the surrounding culture. At times, to reduce conflict with the dominant culture, rules were amended to allow the Jewish people to live more peacefully with their Christian or Muslim neighbors. It is for this reason that Rabbeinu Gershom (circa 1000 CE) took the unprecedented step of outlawing polygamous marriages despite their permissibility under Mosaic law, since in his time Christian Europe had banned polygamy.

Rabbis of all ages understood the delicate balance they had to tread between staying true to Mosaic law and its Talmudic interpretation and at the same time recognizing the facts on the ground. The extensive rabbinic responsa literature extant attests to the creativity, if not brilliance, of rabbinic leaders in trying to find practical solutions that allowed the Jewish people to survive the long and arduous exile.

This state of affairs continued until the times of Rabbi Moshe Sofer (1762–1839, also known by his main work as the Chatam Sofer), who vigorously opposed the innovation and change in Jewish communal life promoted by the Enlightenment Movement. The Chatam Sofer claimed that anything new or novel is forbidden – חדש אסור מין התורה. Today's ultra-Orthodox community are the heirs of the Chatam Sofer's rejection of much of the modern world. The rejection of science, democracy, and secular education can all be traced back to the Chatam Sofer's ambivalence and rejection of modernity and all of its blessings.

This is not to say the Chatam Sofer did not have a reason to be wary of modernity. The wave of assimilation in Germany and other countries surely highlighted the challenges of staying true to the Torah while simultaneously living and being a part of a liberal democratic order. Nevertheless, blindly following the Chatam Sofer's ethos of prohibiting innovation is wrong, and ultimately, self-defeating, as the current haredi lifestyle can not be indefinitely sustained.

Upon closer examination, though, changes have occurred in both halachic practice and Torah learning in ultra-Orthodox society. In the pre-Enlightenment era, a traditionally religious Jew was expected to keep basic rabbinical law (halacha). Only a small number of the most devout kept the most stringent opinion (chumrah) on any given question. Today, the difference between the halachic practice of the average man and a select few ultra-pious individuals has vanished. Now, all community members are expected to observe the most stringent opinion in every case and circumstance. Hence, glatt kosher meat has become today’s communal norm. This is also the reason behind the numerous new stringencies observed on Pesach. What used to be the practice of a tiny minority of families has now become the norm throughout the ultra-Orthodox – and especially hasidic -- world.

Equally restrictive is the intellectual narrowness and outright rejection of the rational tradition that not so long ago was an acceptable position within rabbinic Judaism. Today, the views of the medieval rationalists such as the Rambam in Moreh Nevuchim, the Ralbag on the Torah, and the theology of Don Abarvanel are almost entirely ignored within frum society. Instead, they have been replaced with the legends of the Baal Shem Tov, miracles of the Arizal, and stories of the incredible diligence in Torah study of rosh yeshivas. As far as Jewish law goes, even Rav Moshe Feinstein, the leading haredi posek of post WWII America, is considered too lenient and ‘modern’ by many.

The anti-science posture of the ultra-Orthodox community can best be illustrated by the example of the Chabad movement – which to outsiders may seem to be relatively modern. However, following their deceased rebbe's lead, Chabad adherents continue to believe in a discredited geocentric model of the universe. In other words, they reject the scientifically accepted Copernican view which states that the earth revolves around the sun (at least until Einstein came along). Despite their outwardly modern appearance, internally Chabad members still subscribe to an ancient and discredited model of reality.

Even before the corona pandemic, the ultra-Orthodox community was traveling on an unsustainable trajectory. Their high birth rate, lack of secular education, and dependence on social welfare posed enormous challenges for the frum. The pandemic only exacerbated these challenges a hundred-fold.

The ultra-Orthodox love affair with Trump is not surprising to say the least, as he is a defender of their isolationist, anti-science, anti-democratic, and frequently racist, faith. But Trump's reign is coming to an end, whether he likes it or not. With Trump gone, the ultra-Orthodox will have to eventually tackle their problems on their own. One thing is certain -- the process won't be pretty.

Chiloni hypocrites fresh off of slamming Charedim

Shoppers packed strip malls across Israel on Tues as they reopened after months of closure, leading health officials to fear a virus resurgence.

Long lines & dense crowds formed outside stores as people waited to enter. In many cases, customers did not adhere to social distancing, requiring police officers to step in.

Some stores immediately closed voluntarily after owners concluded it was impossible to maintain distancing.

“In a week, everyone here will be in quarantine” a shopper in northern Israel told Walla.

“People lost proportion” said Elay Segev from Haifa. “Shoppers shoved & elbowed each other. Though just a clothing shop, the line is scary! I fled right away to avoid what's really a gathering. I think it'll double the infection rate”

Some chains announced due to crowding, they'll extend their hours until midnight.

Fuming that open-air shopping centers are allowed but not open-air markets, stall owners at Tel Aviv Carmel Market reopened illegally in protest. Some were fined by municipal agents.

“Why can’t we work? How long can we stay at home? It’s not the money, the money can go to hell, we’re going crazy at home. I put my store up for sale because I want to leave. I’m out of strength.”

Health Ministry officials are deeply frustrated by the eased restrictions, Channel 12 reports & warn a surge in infections will force reversal in 2 or 3 weeks.

Along reopening of strip malls, the virus cabinet designated Eilat & hotels in Ein Bokek as “special tourist islands” with loosened regulations for Israelis. Under lockdown, Israel still does not permit non-citizens or non-residents to enter the country.

The Health Ministry said entry to those areas is allowed for those tested in the previous 72 hours with a negative result. Residents of Eilat who wish to reenter the city have to present a test result, available free.

Health officials express outrage that restrictions are being eased even as the average number of people each virus carrier infects has topped 1.0, when 0.8 is defined as a threshold. They also decry that, contrary to plans, the govt's not waiting 2 weeks between phases to ensure certain steps don’t cause infections to spike.

Unnamed sources told Channel 12 there are concerns that further easing of restrictions will lead to loss of control over the outbreak.

Protesters clashed with police in Bnei Brak Tues eve when officers shut down a shul operating in contravention of virus regulations.

Police said protesters gathered in the area after officers discovered a closed hall held dozens of worshipers crowded in despite regulations that permit only 10 people to pray indoor.

Police said that a number of rioters threw rocks at police vehicles.

According to Channel 12, some shouted derogatory phrases at law enforcement, including the Nazi reference “Go back to Germany”

There were no arrests, but the hall operator was fined NIS 5,000 (approx $1,500)

It could happen to anyone!

A Border Police officer was indicted today for an April assault on a man in Mea Shearim.

The Apr 4 incident occurred during clashes in the neighborhood over enforcement of social distancing & other restrictions imposed to fight spread of the virus.

CCTV footage showed Dov Frankel pushed to the ground by Meron Elia in an unprovoked attack, before the officer continued past him with other troops.

Frankel was injured with bruises & scrapes from the assault.

The Justice Ministry’s PIID Police Internal Investigations Dept opened an investigation into the incident & filed charges at Jerusalem Magistrate Court.

According to the indictment, the officer was commander of forces operating in the neighborhood dealing with rioting over lockdown.

The officer was leaving the area when he came across Frankel, who told the Haaretz he'd been helping his parents as his father was very sick.

PIID notes Frankel encountered the group of officers, one of whom told him to go home & he agreed to comply.

At this point, another officer “without any justification pushed him with his arms outstretched toward his upper body with significant force, throwing him on the road a distance of several meters,” the indictment reads.

“It's unfortunate the officer acted as he did, but consolation can be found in that it was decided to bring him to justice, as it should have been,” Frankel told the Haaretz.

“The evidence showed that the officer commanding the force, ran toward an innocent civilian walking on the street, who did not constitute any disturbance to the public or police & in an arbitrary act pushed him hard with both hands,” said Liat Union, an attorney with PIID.

The Health Ministry said on today that 815 new virus cases were diagnosed a day earlier.

The ministry said there were 8,310 confirmed active coronavirus cases in Israel, with the tally since the start of the pandemic reaching 325,862.

The new figures came as stall owners at Israel’s 2 main markets — Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda and Tel Aviv’s Carmel Market — express outrage they must remain shut while shoppers pack strip malls across the country Tues as they reopened after months of closure.

Mahane Yehuda is known as a stronghold of Bibi’s Likud party & location for Bibi campaign appearances ahead of elections.

Uzi Sharabi, owner of a baked goods stall in the Jerusalem market, told Channel 12 the difficult position he's in, arguing he should be permitted to operate his stall.

“In the 1st closure, I was down for 6 weeks. I promised myself I wouldn't close again. I'm vital,” Sharabi said.

Fuming that open-air shopping centers are allowed to open but not open-air markets, stall owners at Carmel Market opened illegally in protest. Some were fined by city officials.

Rina Salamon, who works at Carmel Market, angrily questions why stores can open on neighboring Allenby St but not in the open-air market.

“We also have to put food on the table,” she told Channel 12.

Israel’s dumpsters bulge with food, headed to trash facilities at great public expense. Meanwhile, in more & more Israeli homes, cupboards are bare, as pandemic poverty makes even grocery shopping a struggle

Not bulging with scraps, but edible, nutricious food

The grim statistics on food waste is Israel consigns to trash a 3rd of all food it produced last year. Half was fit for tables & given 465,000 households that lack money to eat properly, there are plenty of tables where it would've been welcome

These findings come from Leket's report, conducted with consulting firm BDO, with govt backing. Market value of food wasted in 2019 was NIS 20.3 billion ($6 billion)

Food waste hurts us all. We shell out more money for food, not only because we waste on a household level, but because there's massive waste at every stage — production, distribution & in stores. We pay a premium to live in a society with a culture of food waste. And then there’s the cost to environment

In a country where it's taboo to waste water & frowned on to leave a car engine running, dumping food — that combines both these sins — is hardly discussed

When we irrigate food that'll go in the trash, we may as well take precious water & throw it down the drain. Down the drain is actually better because at least it's recycled

Then there's wasted land, human effort & fuel. Gas used in 2019 to transport food destined for dumpsters could power every car in Haifa & suburbs for a year. Land's so precious that home prices are sky-high as to price young people out of the market – yet swathes of land are used to grow food destined for trash cans

Food waste is so ingrained in society, even as conservation orgs scramble for donations

Incentives will likely have a strong impact. Businesses would be motivated to better handle surplus food if they receive tax breaks or other benefits based on every kg of food donated. Currently, many foresee only hassle when they consider doing anything with surplus food, beyond tossing it out

Govt should give businesses a vested interest to ensure this food finds its way to hungry mouths. Any cost is outweighed by the economic benefit of food security among the neediest Israelis.

Economists say it could take years to overcome the financial impact of the pandemic. There has never been a better time for the govt to invest in combating waste.

A mind devoid of scientific inquiry is not a mind. Peer reviewed studies that can be repeated is the objective truth that we must seek as Jews, not anecdotal evidence that confirms are irrational biases.

Edits to this Open Orthodox idiot Kapo to sanitize some of his sick talk but preserving other parts so you can see what he's about: primarily selling out Klal Yisroel to be mechanef Shvartzas & anarchists

By Yehuda Kurtzer (cousin of putz-thief Scranton Agudah Fresser Kurtzer arrested by the FBI days after he was named pro-virus medical posek for Pechter's yeshiva)

Registered to vote in NY’s 16th, I worried when our primary election hit national tv. Longtime incumbent Shmeliot Engel vs Jamaal Bowman – progressive insurgent (Shvartza married to meshumedes Oppenheimer) – metaphor for Democrat divide of establishment Left & emboldened Socialist-Left

Bowman, especially in a summer of riots, is major change of the guard in a district of plurality Blacks

I hoped issues defining the Jewish agenda – Israel's dominant + plenty criticism – wouldn't define between candidates. Engel was visibly pro-Israel (when not caving to Obama), backed by AIPAC. Bowman's advised by tutors of anti-Israel views

There was an exchange of public letters between Bowman & Rabbi Avi Weiss, interrogating Bowman on Israel

Bowman won & controversy faded as he indicated backing Israel’s right to exist overshadowed by affirming Palestinian rights

The race could've gone down a dangerous path of identity politics to ignite racial strife. Instead, they differed on track records, sparing divisiveness some wished

That's why tension between Rev Raphael Warnock & Sen Kelly Loeffler in Georgia bothers me

Jewish Insider reports Warnock signed an anti-Israel letter

As the media scours Warnock’s past he said he's now pro-Israel

It didn't stop GOP non-Jew Loeffler criticizing Warnock's “anti-Israel extremism.” I find it alarming & frankly, terrifying

Though Israel's not an exclusive electoral issue for Jews - an evangelical driver & pro-Palestinian flashpoint – it feels like trafficking in legitimacy vis-à-vis Jews. Loeffler staked a claim not just political but to Jews as allies in a way that inevitably demands Jewish reciprocity. A move inseparable from politics of race hucksters. And Loeffler explicitly condemns Black Lives Matter as anti-Semitic. Thus positions herself arbiter of what's anti-Semitic – taking away agency from Blacks AND Jews

Her crude rhetoric is dangerous for Jews, especially troubling in a polarized election & so unnecessary

Israel & existential threats to Jews as referendum in a Senate race is astonishing. Yell anti-Semite to smear civil rights leader Warnock, isn't just opportunistic, but dangerous. It turns complex bonds Jews have to Israel to something reduced by hustlers. It sows suspicion on Jews for racial justice & Democrats by bifurcating commitments to Israel & Jewish survival vs those they have to Blacks. It narrates that Blacks must pass thru a pro-Israel crucible, led by non-Jews, to curry Jewish favor

Jews have much work to rebuild strong historic if teetering relations with Blacks

The only way is to understand why to growing ranks of Leftists & minorities, the Israel calculus changed. It can backfire if Jewish interests are leveraged vs Black politicians

Engel didn't stoop to cheap shots vs his opponent on Israel. It's unthinkable for Loeffler

Jews suffer on both sides of the aisle if we're hijacked by a party to weaponize vs the other. The Georgia election is monumentally important & could change the balance of power

I hope Loeffler drops her Jew narrative cudgels. For Jews, more's at stake than her career

How low can they get?

Schloss & Jr are either doing it directly or are gorem the mishpochos with anti-vaxx type netiyos to send their kids to the cheder & girls buildings when the kids are actually sick with covid but well enough to just barely pay attention (as long as they don't have high fever & loud coughing)

It would be no surprise al kol ponim if Schloss is demanding this in his slimy emails & phone conversations. But even if he didn't go azoy veit, what do you expect some mishpochos to do when they see he's already breaking every other law in the book? Improperly short quarantining if at all, no doctor visit, etc

Cut out the baloney already of "in consultation with the Rosh Yeshiva shlita"

Confess all the things you hide from Rav Stern or ignore him on!
