International Holocaust Remembrance Day should have been even more sober and contemplative than usual this year. After all, the commemorations around the event are happening less than four months after the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust on October 7, and amid the horrific loss of life that has come in its aftermath in Gaza. The date of the upcoming Memorial Day – January 27 – marks the day that the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in 1945. And who was invited to tread on the blood-stained ground, where so many Jews faced their deaths, in the run-up of commemorations of the historic event? Elon Musk. Escorted by far-right American Jewish pundit Ben Shapiro, the media was saturated Monday with images of the billionaire mogul and owner of the social media platform X touring the death camp with his young son propped up on his shoulders and holding his hand. A video showed Musk attending a Jewish religious service as a rabbi chanted the lament for the dead. The visit was billed as a "private," but Musk came to the death camp accompanied by a large entourage and multiple photographers. Musk's contributions to fanning the flames of antisemitism have two main dimensions. One is his own comments and posts, in which he has consistently amplified anti-Jewish conspiracy theories and screeds, the latest being when he told a far-right user on his X social media platform that he spoke "the actual truth" after the poster explained why he was "deeply disinterested" in Jewish concerns over spiking antisemitism. Musk also actively took part in the antisemitic social media campaign targeting the Anti-Defamation League. These were just the latest in a series of utterances and recommendations of accounts spreading disinformation, some of whom frequently post antisemitic slurs and condemn "the Zionist regime." The second, and more serious Musk sin has been the destruction of guardrails against racism and hate since he became the proprietor of what was formerly known as Twitter, making blue "verified" checkmark premium accounts available to those disseminating antisemitism, Islamophobia, and xenophobia consistently. Musk has also peddled in the politics of anti-immigrant hate in both the United States and in European countries – including cheering on the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) which has recently entertained plans for mass deportation of citizens of foreign origin, sparking massive protests. It was the second such Musk-washing publicity stunt in the same number of months, with the apparent purpose of rehabilitating his image after his comments cost his social media platform millions in advertising revenues. On November 27, it wasn't Shapiro by Musk's side, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, giving him a tour of the decimated Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where Israelis were attacked and murdered by Hamas terrorists. It is clear what Musk gets out of these displays – less so what the benefit is to hosts like the European Jewish Association led by Rabbi Menachem Margolin, which sponsored a conference featuring an on-stage presentation which allowed Musk to tout his goal for X to be "the best source of truth in the world." (The conversation took place after a bizarre presentation of what the Holocaust would look like if it had been live-tweeted on X.) The benefits that Shapiro and Netanyahu reap are more obvious. They are invested in painting antisemitism and hate for Israel as coming exclusively from the far left, denying its dangers in the world of authoritarian white supremacy, whether in Europe or in the pro-Trump MAGA camp in the United States. After Bibi gave Musk his red carpet tour, Haaretz's Ben Samuels criticized the Israeli leader's cynical embrace, writing that the Israeli leader "welcoming such a toxic mogul with open arms and taking him around sites of a massacre that has been belittled, demeaned, and denied on his watch" was a cynical betrayal of the Israelis killed on October 7. Debilitating Phone Pain: Woman Says Life Was Ruined By Texting, Scrolling

ROSCOMMON, Ireland — A 34-year-old woman from Ireland has developed chronic shoulder pain so severe that it prevents her from even sleeping. What’s causing the issue? She believes it’s her phone.

Michelle Waldron has sought emergency medical care 10 times for this issue, yet painkillers have proven ineffective. Now, she is considering Botox injections as a potential solution to alleviate the pain, which has become so debilitating that it hinders her ability to complete simple daily tasks.

Before noticing the pain, Michelle estimates she spent approximately four hours each day using her phone.

“I can’t sleep in a bed, I can only sleep in my chair – it’s too painful in the bed, and I just can’t sleep,” Waldron says in an online video post.

“It just happened overnight – I went to bed fine and woke up in agony. I was scared because the level of pain is quite severe. It’s an awful thing, it’s quite sharp and deep. I can’t cook, clean, or do household duties anymore, and if I’m holding things in my hand, they just fall out of my hand. Chronic pain is an illness – you hear about these things, but you never expect them to happen to you.”

Michelle recalls that her problems began in December 2022 when she woke up one morning with severe pain. Being snowed in at her house, she found herself using her phone more than usual for entertainment, spending three to four hours daily on the device.

Since then, the pain has progressively worsened, evolving from a tingling and throbbing sensation to stiffness and numbness, extending down her arm to her hand. Despite consulting pain specialists and chiropractors, and undergoing acupuncture and steroid injections, Michelle continues to suffer from pain. Her pain specialist has confirmed that the discomfort could be attributed to extensive texting and phone usage.

Michelle has spent approximately $1,130 on various treatments, including visits to pain specialists and chiropractors, and for steroid injections. She plans to try Botox injections in her shoulder, hoping it will relax the muscles and alleviate the pain.

To mitigate the issue, she now uses a mobile phone stylus. Michelle aims to raise awareness about this problem and warns others, sharing that she has felt embarrassed and isolated due to her condition.

“I want to isolate myself. I don’t want to be around people at all. I just want to be on my own, so it’s lonely,” Michelle says. “It’s embarrassing, and it takes a toll on your mental health. The financial cost and emotional experience are not worth it. It’s just severe pain, and I don’t want to be bothering doctors who are already busy.”

The World is Seriously Broken: Can We Still Fix It?

A distinguished professor at a prestigious university wrote to me yesterday: “I am having trouble these days getting out of bed in the morning as the world seems insane.” Her message resonated with me because it arrived just a few minutes after a meeting with my research group of students, postdocs and research associates, where I summarized my winter-break visit to Israel with the words: “Given the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, the worldwide rise in antisemitism, the sympathy towards terrorism followed by silence after the rape of Israeli women on October 7, the subsequent turmoil at Harvard university — ranked lowest on the scale of college free speech by FIRE’s survey a month before October 7, the steady denial of evidence-based science in favor of opinion-based narratives by social media mobs and news reporters… altogether, the world appears to be seriously broken. Can we still fix it or is it a lost cause?”

The alternative response is to retreat into a “vacation mode” and enjoy our personal life and academic inquiry as long as it lasts. We are under no obligation to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders. When our home is on fire, we can take a vacation on a remote island of academic isolation. Should that be the advice I give to my research group?

Anyone who met me knows that I am not a vacation advocate. Last summer, I led an expedition to the Pacific Ocean and worked around the clock to collect evidence about the first reported meteor from outside the Solar system — based on data from US government satellites.

Why did I sacrifice my annual vacation time on the altar of science? Because an object from interstellar space might carry a message for our salvation. Any physical evidence that we are not alone in our cosmic neighborhood would make fighting over terrestrial territories look insane for the same reason that family feuds stop when neighbors show up at the doorstep.

Our political troubles stem from a tendency to congregate into tribes and engage in hate of members from other tribes. During ancient history, the size of congregations was limited by the ability of people to gather together in the same physical space. But today, tribalism and hate are amplified by social media which enable the congregation of enormous crowds on virtual platforms. The virtual world ends up shaping the real world and calamities are triggered by protestors who engage in aggressive action based on superficial opinions without fact checks or a historic perspective.

On this backdrop, devout advocates often violate the principles that they wish to promote. They pretend to promote women’s rights but remain indifferent to women being raped by Hamas terrorists; they pretend to promote minority rights but remain indifferent to anti-Semitic sentiments; they pretend to promote freedom of speech but allocate it only to those who agree with them; they pretend to promote evidence-based science only when the evidence supports their opinion. When virtue signaling fosters oxymorons, it is clear that we live in an Orwellian society doomed to destruction.

Perhaps I am naïve. But my thinking is that learning about the existence of a more intelligent civilization in outer space would inspire us to unite. It makes little sense to engage in tribalism and hate on a ship that sails through turbulent waters after receiving a message in a bottle about a safe haven that lies beyond the horizon. Scientific knowledge about an intelligent civilization could unite us in the same way that a physical proof for the existence of God would unite a religious congregation because its super-human qualities would trigger awe and suppress the ego of all spectators.

I appreciated the power of a collaborative mindset during our Pacific Ocean expedition, when all team members worked constructively for the success of the mission. Humanity’s ship is Earth and the turbulence we feel so far is our own creation on deck. Evidence about what lies beyond our horizon should serve as our inspiration.

The next scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean will attempt to retrieve larger pieces of the first studied interstellar meteor. If the object will end up being a rock, so be it. The Galileo Project team will continue to search for other interstellar objects. Irrespective of how many interstellar rocks we identify, the first message we recover in an interstellar bottle could inspire us to come together and fix our world.

We should not rest until we extinguish the flames of tribalism and hate ignited by superficial protestors on the deck of our ship. Our long-term survival will be the ultimate manifestation of our collective intelligence.

How a leaderless Chabad movement led to an illegal tunnel brawl 

 

 

The tunnel’s discovery was just the latest in a 30-year clash among factions of the Hasidic group led by the late Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who died 30 years ago.

(RNS) — In June, it will be 30 years since the death of Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the leader of the Chabad-Lubavich Hasidic movement, known among his followers simply as “the rebbe” — or “the rabbi.”

But just who the rebbe was, and what his legacy means, is a live issue within the Chabad-Lubavich Hasidic movement, which since his death has been operating in a power vacuum.

Last week, that vacuum opened wide when a brawl broke out between rabbinical students and the New York City police after a secret tunnel was discovered underneath the global headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.

Police arrested nine men between the ages of 19 and 22 who tried to block a cement truck that had been sent to fill the tunnel. Charges included criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and obstructing governmental administration.

But while it shocked Crown Heights’ Hasidic community, the tumult was just the latest in a three-decade-old clash among factions of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, a subset of Orthodox Judaism known for its mystical devotion and strict adherence to Jewish law. Since Schneerson’s death, his disciples have divided into two main groups, and perhaps smaller subgroups.

The two groups operate separately, with their own synagogues and schools. But for three decades they have been locked in a legal dispute over the ownership of the headquarters buildings, including the iconic 770 Eastern Parkway and the adjacent 784-788, which they share, while praying separately — one group in the basement synagogue and the other upstairs in a smaller space.

“In effect, it’s chaos — every group for itself,” said Samuel Heilman, a retired sociologist at Queens College, the co-author, with Menachem Friedman, of the 2010 volume, “The Rebbe: The Life and Afterlife of Menachem Mendel Schneerson.”

Both groups share a fervent belief advanced by the rebbe that their mission is to prepare the ground for the coming of the Messiah. But while both groups believe Schneerson himself was the Messiah, they differ about whether he ever even really died.

The tunnel battle represents the latest front in that larger dispute.

The larger group, representing mainstream Chabad globally, owns the headquarters complex and oversees most of the estimated 5,000 emissaries who have established Chabad houses across the world.

This group believes the rebbe, who died in 1994, is buried in Montefiore Cemetery in Queens. It has built a synagogue and visitor center next to the rebbe’s grave, where they worship and visit frequently.

This mainstream group also suspects Schneerson will eventually rise up and reveal himself as the Messiah, but they don’t publicly discuss it, believing it might detract from their mission to fulfill the Jewish commandments and bring Jews closer to God so as to hasten the Messiah’s arrival.

The other group, which includes most of Crown Heights’ estimated 15,000 Chabad adherents plus others, especially in Israel.  This group worships in the basement synagogue and is sometimes called Congregation Lubavitch. Members of the congregation believe Schneerson never died. He is in hiding, possibly in the building, and could re-emerge at any moment.

“They believe if they could expand the synagogue, it would sort of help usher in the reappearance of the rebbe, the Messianic Age, the end of times,” said Rabbi Yossi Newfield, a former Chabad member and a scholar whose family members still live in the community.

This group, which is often called “meshichist,” from the word “messianist,” refuses to visit Schneerson’s grave or refer to him in the past tense. They are known for chanting, in part or in whole, “long live our master, our teacher and our rebbe, king Messiah forever and ever.” They plaster billboards, lamp posts, mailboxes, crossing signs and cars with posters featuring a photo of the late rebbe with the word “Moshiach” or “Messiah” in big, bold letters in Hebrew or English.

Inside the synagogue, they’ll behave as though they are in the rebbe’s presence.

“They’ll (act as if) the rebbe is there,” said Joshua Shanes, professor of Jewish studies at the College of Charleston, who left the movement. “And they’ll sort of look into empty space as if the rebbe’s there and nod their heads as if the rebbe said something to them and then move on to the next person. You can go online and see videos of this.”

Many of the tunnel diggers, who Chabad media outlets are calling the “Tzfatim,” from the northern Israeli city of Tzefat or Safed, came to the U.S. for a year of study at Chabad headquarters. They are aligned with the meshichists, who, besides their ardent belief in the rebbe, are known for their exuberant worship and their willingness to scream, shout and, if necessary, resort to fistfights.

“When you are Messianic-inclined, you don’t worry about limits, you don’t worry about what seems like the rules,” Shanes said. “If the Messiah is basically already here, how much more so are you gonna be encouraged to behave that way?”

It’s not the first time meshichists have engaged in violence. In 2004, they defaced and later destroyed a plaque that the more mainstream group had affixed to the cornerstone of one of its buildings, causing the authorities to issue a temporary restraining order. The plaque referred to the rebbe in Hebrew as “of blessed memory,” which to the messianists was tantamount to blasphemy, court records show. 

The construction of an underground tunnel, some former Chabad adherents believe, may have been part of an effort to revive a planned expansion of the building the rebbe himself pushed for. The construction was slated to begin in 1992, two years before his death, but was never undertaken.

In an essay explaining the need for the expansion, Schneerson wrote that the synagogues and study halls can be thought of as incarnations of the Jerusalem temple in exile — places where God resided. Referring to 770 Eastern Parkway, he wrote, “it is the place where the Third Temple will first be revealed.” (The first and second Jerusalem temples were destroyed, the first by the Babylonian empire, the second by the Romans.)

“This should be a wake up call to those that are in charge of 770 to force them to get together and finally create the vehicle to expand 770,” said Rabbi Yosef Carlebach, the executive director of the Chabad House at Rutgers University.

Carlebach believes the underground dig was misguided and wrong and many of his fellow meshichists who pray at the downstairs synagogue, have distanced themselves from the rowdy students and placed the blame for the brawl on the Israeli students and the seminary that sent them. Still, he was critical at the complex’s owners for holding up the rebbe’s vision for expansion.

To him, the rebbe was Messiah, and the work that remains is to bring him back.

That makes it difficult for Chabad to appoint a new leader. If Schneerson was the Messiah, no possible successor can ever be named to lead Chabad, because appointing a new leader would be admitting that the rebbe was not the Messiah.

“Within Chabad, they became stuck on the rebbe’s messiahship,” said Newfield. “And even his death has not really changed that. They’re stuck.”

Many of us, upon hearing something that we are certain is either absurd, flawed, or hopelessly corrupt, immediately and vociferously make up our minds to oppose them, regardless of what the full suite of evidence actually indicates. Once we abandon our critical thinking faculties because we are certain we know the answer, we tend to simply go along with those who agree with us and oppose those who espouse anything different. To Einstein, this represented the death of the rational mind, which he called “collective insanity” or a “herd mind.” Today, we would likely call it groupthink, and Einstein noted that it was often driven by a prominent figure spouting propaganda.

Scientists, including formerly reputable ones like Johannes Stark (Nobel Laureate and founder of the Stark effect), formed an anti-relativity society that discredited Einstein and his theory. Fueled by nationalism and anti-semitism, Einstein and his ideas became a target, with one line of attack claiming relativity was wrong and dangerous, and another line claiming it was brilliant but that Einstein stole the idea from “real” (non-Jewish) scientists. It was this course of action that eventually led to Einstein having a bounty placed on his head, leading to him fleeing Germany for the United States. While Einstein initially thought these machinations were silly, ridiculous, and harmless, he later concluded that “Blind obedience to authority is the greatest enemy of the truth.” In the era of fake news, this lesson is more important to assimilate than ever.

FBI arrests Williamsburg man for alleged sexual assault of minor

A 31-year-old resident of Williamsburg, who is a convicted sex offender, was arrested Wednesday and charged in Brooklyn’s federal court on Thursday of engaging in the luring and sexual molestation of a minor. 

Joseph Grunwald’s alleged activities took place between April and June 2023, where he is accused of using internet and mobile applications, specifically Telegram, to knowingly attempt to persuade and coerce a minor into sexual activities. 

The case against Grunwald, detailed by an FBI special agent, paints a grim picture. The agent, part of the Violent Crimes Against Children and Human Trafficking Task Force, outlines how Grunwald initiated contact with the victim through Telegram. Despite being informed of the child’s age, Grunwald allegedly continued the engagement, eventually leading it to sexually explicit conversations and requests for inappropriate images.

On Jan. 3, 2024, the FBI executed search warrants at Grunwald’s residence, uncovering additional evidence pertinent to the case. Though Grunwald was not present during the search, he was later apprehended in Brooklyn leaving a synagogue in Borough Park that same night.

Gunwald is a registered sex offender. In September 2017, Joseph Grunwald was arrested for molesting a 7-year-old girl in a synagogue during Yom Kippur. He faced charges including three misdemeanors for forcible touching and acting injuriously towards a child, alongside a felony count for sexual contact with a child under 11.

While the tunnels breathed new life into old antisemitic conspiracies, the reality was that a group of students had decided to take 770's expansion into their own hands.

Footage of New York Jews appearing from tunnels surrounding Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn, known as 770, quickly circulated online. Alongside the videos were countless antisemitic theories, many of which referenced “sewer Jews,” according to the Anti-Defamation League. So, why were the tunnels really there?

Some of the students at the Chabad had secretly constructed tunnels connecting 770 with adjacent buildings in an attempt to expand the center. After Chabad was made aware of the damage caused by the young men, the buildings administrators tried to repair the damage which was met with further damage by the young men, the Jewish Telegraph Agency reported.

As the dispute between the administrators and students continued, the NYPD was brought in. Nine people were arrested and three were cited for disorderly conduct during the commotion, JTA published.

The tunnel had been discovered a month before the commotion, with public attention only now being grabbed as a result of the violent reaction to repairing the damage.

Investigators uncovered “a single linear underground tunnel” approximately the length of a bowling alley that had been illegally excavated, the buildings department told the New York Jewish Weekly.

Those who dug the tunnel had created several openings in the basement walls of the single-story building. It wasn’t immediately clear how much of the tunnel had been excavated from the ground, and how much was formed by making openings in existing rooms.

The tunnel had rudimentary supports in place and was constructed without approval or permits. City engineers said the excavation had undermined the building above it, as well as another building on Kingston Avenue, causing structural stability issues. The Department of Buildings issued partial vacate orders for both buildings due to safety concerns.

The department said other neighboring structures were unaffected and could be reoccupied, apparently meaning that the synagogue itself was secure.

“The safety of our fellow New Yorkers is our highest priority,” the department said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the progress of this emergency stabilization work, and if necessary, we are ready to take additional actions that may be required in the interest of public safety.”

Chabad Chairman Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky issued a statement on X on behalf of 770, stating “The Chabad-Lubavitch community is pained by the vandalism of a group of young agitators who damaged the synagogue below Chabad Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway Monday night.

“These odious actions will be investigated, and the sanctity of the synagogue will be restored. Our thanks to the NYPD for their professionalism and sensitivity.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of concern, and for the support of our Chabad-Lubavitch institutions around the world.”

‘Sewer Jews,’ and old antisemitic tropes

While social media posts seem to have been made with only the intention of laughing at a somewhat bizarre occurrence, the footage seemed to breathe new life into old tropes that Jews traffic, abuse, and ritualistically kill children, the ADL said. Antisemitic online pages have peddled lies that items belonging to babies were found in the tunnels and that the attempts to fill in the tunnels were to hide evidence.

The ADL added that others used the tunnels as an excuse to claim that Jews had disproportionate power and that they could do whatever they wanted without permits.

Others connected the tunnels in New York to the terror tunnels dug by Hamas, some stating that the Hamas tunnels were for self-defense while the Jews had some kind of nefarious plan.

“Users on 4chan, Telegram and X used generative artificial intelligence tools, or GAI, to generate images of the incident. Some content was hyper-realistic, falsely depicting actual documentation of the tunnels,” the ADL wrote. “Other content manifested as grotesque antisemitic propaganda, portraying religious Jews in the form of antisemitic caricatures or rats, carrying bloodied children and mattresses.”

In one heavily disputed viral X post, a man had previously claimed to be hearing Yiddish under his floorboards.

Online users have said that the posts cannot be found on his profile and that screenshots of the posts are doctored. In addition, the account had never posted about living in Crown Heights before the story broke, and he has posted several antisemitic and racist content.
