UOJ ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHOL HAMOED - SEATS ARE GOING QUICK!

Produced by the president of the UOJ executive board...R' Gross.

An intelligent reader writes; definitely worthy as a headliner. (I'm humbly embarrassed by the praise)

UOJ, what you have done is nothing short of heroic having the guts to peel back the Band-Aids and let the healing of the victims begin. As Rav Yaakov Kamentzki has said, if an abuse victim does not follow the Halachah because of what he experienced, the abuser gets those aveiros. The pain is real and lived with on a daily basis.

A close friend of mine just told me this horrible story. He was married for over a decade, and had problems with intimacy and felt it was evil, disgusting, and not necessary. For all this time his wife felt that he didn't find her attractive, and felt depressed despite his reassurances. As a result of your blog the suppressed memories came back, and he recalled vividly being molested over 22 years before. This realization made him understand his discomfort and embarrassment involved in intimacy. This disclosure has helped facilitate healing with this couple, though obviously not fully.

While my friend's abuser is free to walk about like an upstanding citizen, he is left with the troubles caused. Because the abuser is so respected no rabbi believed what he was saying, sending back to more abuse, while chastising him for having the chutzpah to say such things.

To All Rabbis:

When a person comes to you with an allegation of abuse, they are coming to you out of pain. Don't blow them off, lecture them about Derech Eretz, and say it can't be. A dayan at the time that the accused is in front of him, must believe that he may have done what he is accused of. As the saying goes Kabdehu V'Chashdehu, respect him BUT suspect him.

To All Principals:

When a person comes to you with an allegation of abuse, tread carefully. While you have a responsibility towards your staff, the children are much more important.
When a fellow staff member comes to you with information, they are putting everything on the line for the sake of the children. You must take these allegations seriously.

To All Spouses:

If your spouse is not interested in intimacy, it is not that you are unattractive; it is more than likely a subconscious decision. Sadly, there are too many Jewish couples wearing the great Band-Aid of pain. Support your spouse as you slowly remove the Band-Aid and heal.

The following article is especially helpful for couples coping with this painful topic. This is obviously not meant for children of non-marriageable age. The page is:

One Sunday this past summer, I drove with my family up to "the country" to visit our neighbors (of eruv fame) in the delightful Riversite Bungalow Colony, near South Fallsburg, NY. While there, we discussed -- particularly with R. Dr. Chaim Neuhoff -- whether a man may sit by the swimming pool during men's swimming time and learn Gemara.

Ohel Insider said...
Warning to men in Boro Park: Ohel Family Services has in the last few years been getting many government grants. One of them was for the purpose of opening a domestic violence center. In order to justify the money they receive Ohel must ensnare woman to come for counseling under the pretense that they are being abused. Ohel hires social workers and counselors and makes a nice fee off this. Once they sink their claws into the woman they don’t let go very easy because this is a major profit center for them. It can evolve into profit from divorce counseling, children counseling and the list goes on.

Here are the signs to look for if you suspect that your wife is getting involved with Ohel.

Modus operendi: The counselor will first try to get the woman to get her own cell phone so she can contact her discreetly. The counselor has the woman call Ohel at 718 851 6300 and leave a message for the counselor. The counselor will then call back with the appointment time probably when the husband is at work so he wont find out that they are sucking in his wife. Ohel will not come up on the caller id. The caller id will come up as 646718. If you see that your wife has called 718 851 6300 and then has a call back of 718646 you will know that she is in touch with Ohel and you better take action before its to late. Ohel will give her articles, books and lists of items to convince her that she is being abused. You will then hear her use words and talk in ways that she was not familiar with before. Watch out for these signs. Warning your wife could be involved with Joan Hertz of Ohel Domestic Violence.

This is being published for the benefit of the Jewish Community by Ohel Insider. I hope to post more information about Ohel and names of its counselors in the future. Anyone else that has information should also share it for the benefit of the community. This is a major scandal ready to break open. The Rabanim are unfortunately all quit about this. Some are paid fat salaries by Ohel to condone what they do.

I know that the Kamenetzky family is related to R' Avrohom Chaim Levin of Telz-Chicago but I'm not sure how.

Why would these two relatives sit together on the same spineless beis din that was supposed to deal with Kolko & Margo?

I also didn't know until now that Moishe Sherer learned in Ner Yisroel. I wonder how much discussion he had with the Neubergers about NIRC homeboys wreaking havoc in the molestation arena.

Hananya Ederi, 27, and Jacob Eran, 28, both of Brooklyn, are accused of selling counterfeit Motorola Bluetooth earpieces. On three separate occasions between May 15 and Sept. 5, the defendants are alleged to have sold the undercover officer a total of 200 Bluetooth earpieces for $3,700. On Sept. 5, court-authorized search warrants were executed at the two locations in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn where the undercover allegedly made his purchases
42nd Street and 4202 Third Avenue – and that more than 2,000 counterfeit Bluetooth earpieces were seized with an estimated street value of more than $50,000.

Hananya Ederi, 27, of 1737 E 15th Street in Brooklyn, and Jacob Eran, 28, of 1800 Ocean Avenue, also in Brooklyn, were arraigned on a criminal complaint charging them with second- and third-degree trademark counterfeiting. The defendants, who face up to four years in prison if convicted, were each ordered held on $7,500 bail and to return to court on Oct. 9.

It is a disgrace that David Cohen is the mara dasra of Ohel. This the R. Cohen who has said that it is only permitted to inform on a child molester if he is molesting Jewish children but not if he is only molesting gentile children. This is the R. Cohen who has made vile statements regarding gezel akum and tax evasion that have been reported elsewhere on the internet (he said that we can simply ignore what the Shulchan Aruch and all of the other great poskim say about these matters). This is the R. Cohen who built his shul with money from a known fugitive. Please do not think that R. Cohen represents the views of the Orthodx rabbinate. Many Orthodx rabbis who are aware of his views have described him as an immoral individual who distorts the Torah in the worst ways and who is no better than a reform rabbi because he ignores our halachik mesorah in respect of business ethics. Rav Herschel Schachter of YU publicly condemnned him and his shul. It is no wonder that the Agudah will not let him have any role at any of their conventions and that so many YU roshei yeshiva have condemnned him in the harshest terms. We as a community should be embarrased that he has any role in any of our communal organizations.

Shmarya,

Sorry for the harsh language. But i'm sitting here crying for the thousands of victims that even mandel claims were molested.

The agudas yishmoel didn't even have the decency to highlight the article as their main piece in the magazine.

They will cover up until with the help of bloggers and the media will collapse completly.

Shmarya, you still get to give Them credit.
"Civil authorities" mean not only police but County(5 boroughs)D.A., US Attorney for Southern and Eastern Districts, even State Police.
This what it means. Yes, I,too was abused by Them, lied by Them but civil authority is Authority.
Monsey Tzadik, I know what you went through, I know what kind of beria is Leibb Tropper. I met many of your classmates if you went to "Kol Eisav" or whatever its called now.
ALL of them were mental cases, belonging in Bellevue Mental Ward, with deep hatred of ANY LESS RELIGIOUS JEW, and, of course, everyone else.
One even told me that frum kids with learning disabilities are...GOIM!!!
"They don't want to learn!"
You might know this guy, nebah.
Monsey community leaders should've close down the Institution on Maple Avenue...
Anon, David Cohen is a sick jerk, empty capote, his Pinky Green's temple is HALF-EMPTY Shabbos morning.
He is probably the worst product of Chaim Berlin machine, and they try to stay away from him.
Malachhamoves, I put similar thoughts under Shmarya's Credo, but money-base is huge and nobody collapsing...

Here are three more molesters protected by HaRav Cohen:

1) HaRav Dovid Cohen is friedly with Rabbi Lewis Brenner's ( http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/lewisbrenner.html ) family.

2) The case of Brenner's son-in-law Rabbi Ephraim Bryks to the list.

He's protected both.

3) Add the Case of Rabbi Solomon Hafner. According to lawyer Michael Lesher, Rabbi Cohen wrote an open letter in Hebrew, which appeared on community bulletin
boards, apologizing to Rabbi Solomon Hafner, for causing him “distress and humiliation,”
while, nevertheless, stressing his own “good intentions.”

http://www.philly.com/dailynews/local/20070920_Bail_denied_for_exec_in__75M_fraud_case.html

The alleged mastermind of a $75-million fraud was denied bail yesterday by a federal magistrate.
U.S. Magistrate David R. Strawbridge said Neal D. Saferstein posed a "significant risk" to flee and ordered him jailed pending trial.

Saferstein pleaded not guilty to fraud, conspiracy and tax charges.

Prosecutors said Saferstein, 34, of Mount Laurel, N.J., posed a "significant and irremediable" flight risk.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Williams said Saferstein had been pulled over by federal agents on the New Jersey Turnpike the morning after his indictment last week.

He was enroute to Newark to catch a flight to Los Angeles, and had PCP and marijuana in his system when arrested.

Williams also said Saferstein had international business connections and family in Israel, and had bragged to federal agents that he could create fake passports.

Defense attorney Donald Mo-ser said the circumstances were not as sinister as the feds portrayed.

Moser said that Saferstein's plane ticket had been purchased two weeks before his arrest and that he had been headed to L.A. to help his ailing grandmother.

He said that anything Saferstein told federal agents had been done so under the influence of PCP and marijuana, and that he didn't have a passport.

Carl Poplar, another defense attorney, said Saferstein had relatives in Israel but hadn't visited them recently and had "no ongoing" ties to them.

Saferstein, chief executive officer of GoInternet.net, and two other executives of the defunct company, were charged by a federal grand jury last week with bilking customers out of $75 million for Internet-related services without their knowledge or authorization.

The feds said GoInternet telemarketers duped customers into receiving a welcome packet without fully disclosing that it would trigger $30 monthly bills unless the customer called back within 15 days to cancel.

GoInternet then billed customers by placing the charges on their telephone bills, which many paid without looking at the bills.

The scheme is alleged to have occurred from March 2001 to April 2004. The company went out of business in 2004.

Williams said that during the scheme, Saferstein amassed more than $2 million in personal income, which the feds have not been able to find.

Saferstein also is charged with with filing false tax returns between 2001 and 2004, and with failing to pay more than $2.8 million in payroll taxes.

If convicted of all charges, he could face 15 to 20 years behind bars under advisory sentencing guidelines.

Melvyn Weiss, co-founder of a prestigious New York law firm that made an estimated $250 million by filing class-action lawsuits against some of America's largest corporations, was indicted Thursday on charges that he conspired to pay kickbacks to people who agreed to be plaintiffs.

Weiss was added to an existing indictment in the seven-year investigation involving his firm, Milberg Weiss, and other lawyers.

Weiss is accused of two counts of conspiracy and additional counts of obstruction of justice and making false statements in relation to documents that were the subject of a grand jury subpoena, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office.

"The indictment outlines a decades-long kickback scheme that was deliberately concealed from courts across the nation that were overseeing significant class-action cases," said George S. Cardona, acting U.S. attorney in Los Angeles.

"The scheme furthered personal greed at the expense of the integrity of the courts and the interests of absent class members," he said.

Weiss' New York attorney, Benjamin Brafman, did not immediately return a call for comment.

If convicted of all counts, Weiss could face up to 40 years in federal prison.

In a related development, a former senior partner at the firm, Steven G. Schulman, who had been indicted last year in the scheme, agreed to plead guilty to a racketeering charge.

In a race for rabbinic office that may turn into a messy family affair, two of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's sons are competing to become the next Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem.

Yosef's personal favorite is his son Yitzhak, the author of a popular set of books on Jewish law called Yalkut Yosef.

However, David, Yosef's other son, who heads the huge Yecheve Da'at Yeshiva in Har Nof, Jerusalem and who has close ties to Shas's charismatic former chairman Aryeh Deri, is also interested in obtaining the prestigious title.

Jerusalem has been without a chief rabbi for four years ever since Chief Sephardi Rabbi Shalom Mashash and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yitzhak Kolitz passed away within a few months of each other.

However, numerous delays to new appointments have been caused by political wrangling, a dispute over whether to appoint one or two chief rabbis in Jerusalem and the fact that there is no chosen religious council chairman. Sources in Shas said that David, who lacks the backing of his father, does not have a chance.

David told The Jerusalem Post that the subject was "sensitive" and therefore preferred not to talk about his candidacy, although he did not deny he was running.

Since Deri was banished from Shas's leadership after being convicted for bribery, David, who continued to back Deri, has also lost favor within Shas's inner power circles.

Just two weeks ago, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who technically holds the Religious Affairs portfolio, signed new municipality directives that cleared the way for the appointment of two chief rabbis - one Sephardi and one Ashkenazi - in Jerusalem.

According to the temporary head of Jerusalem's Religious Council, Attorney Moshe Isaac Ositcher, the new directives allow Olmert to determine in advance which candidate will be chosen. Yitzhak Cohen, Shas's representative inside the Prime Minister's Office who is responsible for religious affairs, also helped put together the directives.

Due to Olmert's political ties to Shas, the only religious party in the government coalition, and considering Cohen's hands-on involvement with the drafting of the directives, it is highly likely that Yosef will be given the prerogative to choose Jerusalem's next Sephardi Chief Rabbi.

One senior source inside Jerusalem's religious council said that David is more traveled, knows English and is a better public speaker than Yitzhak, while Yitzhak is considered more of a halachic authority.

Yitzhak's son is married to the daughter of Chief Sephardi Rabbi Shlomo Amar.

Meanwhile, the race for the Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Jerusalem seems to be cinched already. If he decides to run, Rabbi Yosef Yekutiel Efrati - head of a successful kosher supervision operation called Kashrut Le'mehadrin which specializes in produce - has close ties to Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, the most respected halachic authority among haredi Ashkenazi Jews.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/objects/pages/PrintArticleEn.jhtml?itemNo=906474

NEW YORK - This is an election in every sense of the word. There is a voter's registry with a list of those eligible to vote; voters must present valid identification; the contenders are waging a fierce campaign; and the tension between the opposing camps is palpable. What makes this election unprecedented is the identity of the contenders: This election will determine which of two rabbinic leaders of the Bobov Hasidic sect has the most support among Bobov Hasidim.

One contender is Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam, son of Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam, who revived the Bobov Hasidic dynasty in America after the Holocaust, but died in 2000. The other is Rabbi Mordechai David Unger, son-in-law of Rabbi Naftali Halberstam, who briefly succeeded Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam, but then died two and a half years ago.

The elections, which began about a week ago and are expected to continue for another few days, were forced on Bobov Hasidim by a rabbinic court in response to a suit brought by several followers of Rabbi Unger against Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam. In accordance with Jewish law, rabbinic judges were chosen by mutual consent to determine which of the two rabbis would bear the exclusive title of Admor of Bobov, or leader of the sect.

"Something like this has never happened in the history of the Hasidic movement," remarked one Hasidic Jew, leaning against the gate at the entrance of the central Bobov beit midrash (Torah study center) in Brooklyn's Borough Park neighborhood. "That a Hasidic rabbinic leader would be elected by a vote - our forefathers never dreamed of such a thing."

Only followers of Rabbi Halberstam currently worship in the central beit midrash. Followers of Rabbi Unger have established their own temporary beit midrash in response to the hostility engendered by the split between the camps.

The movement's single yeshiva students were denied the right to vote in the current election, so voters are required to provide proof that they are married. The decorum has been exemplary, and the Hasidic voters appear to have whole-heartedly embraced the mitzvah (commandment) of voting. But attempts to elicit comments from potential voters met with reluctance.

"They don't like talking about it, because the election is an expression of the painful split that took place among Bobov Hasidim," explained one yeshiva student, after he was promised that his identity would be concealed. "And this is happening during the [High Holidays] period of mercy and forgiveness," he added.

In order to prevent members of other Hasidic sects from voting, election organizers established a registry of eligible voters. "It's a very precise list," one Hasid remarked. But the number of names on the list remains a secret.

Instead of a ballot, voters are asked to respond to a questionnaire prepared by the rabbinic court. The questionnaire, written in Yiddish, contains eight questions phrased as demands. For example, "I demand that the authority of the Bobov Hasidic court's rabbinic leadership rest with..." The voter then marks the empty square next to the name of the preferred rabbi, Rabbi Halberstam or Rabbi Unger.

Voters are also asked to respond to the following question: "If my side is granted the authority and the other side's rabbinic leader splits from the Hasidic court to establish his own community, I demand one of the following: That the other side not be entitled to use the name Bobov, even as a name that accompanies another title, or that the other side be entitled to be called 'Bobov,' but only on condition that it adds a modifying name to that title."

Both sides cautiously avoid making predictions regarding the outcome of the election. "The results will not be known until after the holidays," explained one of Rabbi Halberstam's faithful.

Nevertheless, word has it that the number of voters in Rabbi Halberstam's beit midrash is several times larger than in that of Rabbi Unger.

"We cannot prevent Rabbi Unger from serving as Admor, but we will staunchly oppose him bearing the title," the Halberstam supported promised.

Sephardic, Ashkenazi rabbis at odds over 'shmita' ban bypass
By Amiram Cohen, Haaretz Correspondent

Sephardic and Ashkenazi rabbis were at odds Monday over a decision to allow the sale of fruit and vegetables during the year that Jewish tradition stipulates land in Israel should remain uncultivated.

Rabbi Avraham Yosef okayed the procedure known as "heiter mechira" in which Jewish farmers nominally sell their land to non-Jews for a year in order to bypass the septennial ban on growing agricultural products known as "Shmita."

Rabbinical sources were quoted as saying approval of the procedure was a "declaration of war on the Ashkenazi Ultra-Orthodox rabbis and their leader, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv."

Yosed, who is the son of the Shas party spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, authorized the "Heiter Mechira" that was first used towards the end of the 19th century to allow Jewish farmers to sell their products and save them from bankruptcy.

Ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi and some Sephardic rabbis, however, refuse to recognize "heiter mechira" and forbid supermarket chains to market agricultural products that do not receive their seal of approval as kosher.

I did not listen to the recording of Rabbi Dovid Cohen but I'm not really impressed with that story. David Hartman is one of the biggest losers out there who certainly does not honor the memory of the Rav. UOJ had a blurb on him too a while back. If you want to prove that Dovid Cohen should be manhandled, you have to find a more credible bouncer.

Paul Mendlowitz said...

I'm not done with Zweibel's weasels. If you can't trust them to protect our children, and they actively seek legislation protecting the child predator, there must be a revolution calling for the dismantling of the Agudath Israel. I'm serious now...they are criminally dangerous people!

As long as that organization is in existence, we have no right to complain when another child gets molested, another travesty of a Margulies leading a school, and gangsters like Kaminetzky and Perlow are called gedolim!

Your call klal Yisroel...there's a limit on how much one man can do without participation of the entire community!

It was David Cohen Yemach Shmo that had given the approval and endorsment to his congregants to bribe the corrupt Judge Garson. David Cohen is himself a Chalall and not a ligitimate Cohen. He comes from defiled ancestry. He's corrupt from all sides. I suggest, someone ought to check out if he's even Jewish.

For those who are outraged that David Cohen serves on the Vaad Haposkim of the RCA despite his public humiliaition of the Rav and his well know extreme anti-halachik statements on business ethics (which I undertsand the RCA leadership is well aware of), you should email bherring@rabbis.org (Rabbi Basil Herring is the executive dorector of the RCA) to demand that David Cohen be removed from this position.

R. Cohen has a long white beard and his shul is on Coney Island between Avenue L and Avenue M. The last time he came to Teaneck for Shabbos his vile comments outraged so many people that many are planning to stage a public protest against him if he ever appears in the neighborhood again. The Rabbi of one of the largest orthodox shuls in the country has told people that he will ask R. Cohen to leave his shul's premises if he ever dares to walk into his shul.

This Putz who used to be frum is leading another temple in Naples FL after his arrest in SC. He used to be in Toronto. JWB would be interested to know that his wife, Lila Sarick used to be a journalist that wrote about the con artist turned ger that was defended in court by Rabbi Mendel Kaplan.

http://www.theyeshivaworld.com/article.php?p=1608

Rabbi Chezi Zionce, the former leader of Synagogue Emanu-El in West Ashley, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. Two Charleston police officers found Zionce at 8:10 a.m. on Lee Street in the citys East Side neighborhood, according to a police report.Police said Zionce was parked in a silver 2006 Cadillac, in which the officers found three glass pipes.?

The arrest came a month after Zionce, 48, left his rabbi post at the synagogue for unexplained reasons.

Two weeks ago, synagogue administrator Abby Levine said that Zionce was no longer employed there but would not elaborate on the circumstances of his departure.

One member at Emanu-El, George Breibart, said that before leaving for good, the rabbi had stopped going to meetings and often wasnt in his office.

He didnt come some Fridays. He didnt come some Saturdays, Breibart said.

Sonya and Stuart Knee attend Synagogue Emanu-El and were walking on its grounds on Monday when they learned of the rabbis arrest.

The congregation appears to be very steady and very stalwart and will survive this, Stuart Knee said.

Zionce was released on his own recognizance without bail, a municipal court administrator said.

Zionce couldnt be reached for comment, and Lila Sarick, Zionces wife, would not comment on the matter.

This is about the importance of being able to facilitate change via the Internet and fierce determination, not about tooting my own horn.

Does anyone know if Bryks is still teaching in the Shearis Russian yeshiva in Brooklyn? He was believed to have gone into real estate working for a frum owned agency after he was forced out of the RCA.

The reason he is still giving shiurim to Bokharians in Queens at night is because Rabbi Nisanov has been protecting him. Nisanov heads the more yeshivish faction of the Bokharians and also happens to be the current head of the Queens Vaad. Bryks has sat on the Vaad beis din alongside Belsky's buddy Peretz Steinberg.

Rabbi Simcha Krauss from Young Israel of Hillcrest tried to get Bryks kicked off the Queens Vaad.

There are staggering levels of fraud in the Italian olive oil business. Experts have found that 30% of extra virgin is adulterated with everything from soybean oil to chazir treif LARD. Investigators say this is also true at major brands like Bertolli that are under the OU.

One ganav that was caught says that 90% of all Italian olive oil is adulterated. Chemists agree that the ganovim have the adulteration science so down pat that foreign substances can only be detected by expert tasters and not in the lab.

Why so much fraud? There is as much money to made there as in drug trafficking.

Let me be clear as to what we know about david cohen. He has come to bergenfield, NJ as a scholar in residence for the past two years and each time he spoke on Friday night in an open Q&A session. I was not there but I spoke to numerous witnesses who were there and they reported the following. The first year he said that the only heter for mesira in the case of child molestation is due to the harm that befalls Jewish children who are molested. The very clear implication was that mesira would not be permitted if the only children that are molested are not Jewish. The second time he came he said that tax evasion is permissible in the absence of a realistic possibility of a chillul hashem. he also said that he would deny having said that if he thought that it would get him into trouble. He then had a few private converstaions in which he said that absolute theft from gentiles is permissible in the absence of a realistic possibility of a chillul hashem and one can ignore all of the poskim (Shulchan Aruch, Rambam, Tur and every other posek of note over the past two thousand years) who say that it is forbidden becasue they probably only said so because of fear of the gentiles. Just to be clear -- I think that he would agree that in most cases theft would be forbidden becasue of chillul hashem but that in some cases it would be permissible if there is no relaistic possiblity of getting caught. I understand that many rabbis are aware of his views and they have called him a heretic and much worse. I also understand that the leadership of the RCA is also aware of his views but they have taken no action to have him removed from the Vaad Haposkim of the RCA. If people do not belive this, why don't they call him (his phone number is listed) and ask him whether theft from a gentile and tax evasion is permissible if there is no possibility of a chillul hashem.

Another Chag, Another Scandal -Kashruth & Money Don't Mix Well With Oil

by N. Katzin

Two weeks ago Taaman CEO Chaim Shalom told the following telltale fact: If olive oil is priced below NIS 20 per bottle it might be fake. One week later Taaman olive oil could be found on grocery store shelves for NIS 11.75. So what is the smart consumer to conclude? This anecdote typifies the state of the olive oil market in the chareidi sector during the Chanukah season. It seems the rumor mongers who started disseminating stories about supposedly fake olive oil did not imagine how high up the rumors would spiral.

The wild competition in the lucrative oil market reached its peak recently when competing dealers sent samples of each other's products to the Israeli Standards Institute for lab testing, only to find not a single brand met the institute's standards. What are we to make of these findings? Have commonly sold olive oils really been uncovered as fake? What does the kashrus seal on the bottle indicate?

The first rumors in circulation spoke of revelations that products labeled olive oil were actually not made from olives according to the Standards Institute. These vague rumors from unnamed sources effectively indicted all of the dealers selling low-priced oils. The rumors were accompanied by supposed telltale signs of fake olive oil.

Chaim Shalom of Taaman, whose oil was sold at a relatively high price, explained that the primary identification mark of fake olive oil is the price. "Every bottle sold today under NIS 20 is suspect since the oils in Spain itself are currently priced at approximately NIS 17 per bottle," he said. The same rumors suggested the chareidi consumer could also spot fake olive oil according to the shape of the bottle. These rumors were accompanied by praise for the quality of Taaman olive oil, which should be a sufficient tip- off for even the innocent reader to realize this is not exactly objective advice.

The rumors alerted the managers of chareidi grocery store chains who were astonished to discover an attempt had been made to set high price levels by disseminating vague rumors about low-priced products. They insisted olive oil sold for NIS 15-19 — and even less — was genuine.

The claims of false olive oil were reminiscent of the walnut oil affair on Erev Pesach 5765, when major shortages in olive oil jacked up prices significantly. At the time Yated Ne'eman revealed that the exclusive importer, Taaman, was accused of taking advantage of the situation to rake in large profits at the public's expense. The company's CEO denied the claims.

Discovered Fake Last Chanukah

Where did the rumors really originate? Apparently from a combination of factors.

The only bona fide fake was a product labeled "Yerushalayim Semen Zayit Katit," which HaRav Machpud's Yoreh De'ah organization announced was no longer under their kashrus supervision. But this was actually old news, for a simple test revealed it was fake even before last Chanukah.

Last year the standards institute issue a press release saying two brands of olive oil, Yerushalayim and Romis, had been found to be diluted with soy oil although they were packaged as fine pressed olive oil. Both brands were marketed for eating, not for lighting purposes, whereas the recent rumors referred to candlelighting oil.

Another brand, Menora, also lost its kashrus certification. Contrary to rumors Chug Chasam Sofer of Bnei Brak did not remove its kashrus certification because the product was not genuine olive oil.

"We discovered the oil was purchased by a party that bought the oil in barrels, bottled it and sold it to two dealers who marketed it," a Chasam Sofer spokesman told Yated Ne'eman. "We learned the bottled oil was sent to a certified lab for tests and was found to be 100 percent pure, clean olive oil. But because the oil was not under our supervision at the time of packaging we removed our kashrus certification and announced that Menora olive oil was not under our responsibility."

"Anyone who reads the wording of the announcement carefully can see this was stated very clearly, not that fake [olive oil] had been discovered but that the oil was packaged without supervision and therefore we do not take responsibility for it. The decision was made several days before we made a public announcement and certainly before the rumors about fake [olive oil] began to circulate."

The Kashrus Seal and the Reliability of the Oil

The products the rumors refer to were marketed under mehadrin kashrus. What does the kashrus seal indicate? Does the hechsher apply only to the kashrus of the product or does it include supervision over the reliability of the claims by the manufacturer or dealer?

According to the Badatz Eida Chareidis its kashrus "includes supervision to ensure the oil is 100 percent pure olive oil as the label indicates. We are very careful to avoid misleading the public in this matter, which is important in and of itself."

Through its representatives in Eretz Yisroel, Dayan Osher Yaakov Westheim's kashrus organization also confirms the olive oil under its supervision is 100 percent pure. They say Maagal Hashana Olive Oil was under their supervision "from the start of the production process to the finish, all along the way through the marketing of the product. In the middle samples were sent to certified labs and it was found to be clean olive oil."

Dr. Eliyohu Licht, a chareidi chemist and an established authority in the area of kashrus, refused to comment on any brand of olive oil, but remarked, "Every chemist checks the samples brought to him at the lab and the certification applies to these samples and not all of the products. The chemist certainly does not oversee or grant a hechsher for the products.

"I would also like to state regarding quotes that had me saying one brand of candlelighting olive oil or another is edible and the label `Semen Zayis Lema'or' is affixed because of import customs, etc.—if the manufacturer does not take responsibility the olive oil is edible nobody else will take responsibility for determining the oil is edible."

Pure Olive Oil — But Does Not Meet Standards

Dr. Eliyohu Licht explains in greater detail what tests are conducted on olive oil.

The first test is to check the fatty acid, which provides an indication of its source. Every type of oil has a different composition, which allows us to identify whether it is olive oil or a different type of oil, i.e. whether the olive oil was diluted with a different type of oil. If the additives are a substantial percentage they can be discovered at this stage.

Two other tests relate to quality: Acidity testing: olive oil contains free acids. The standard institute ascribes different terms to olive oil according to a ranking of acidity. Extra virgin cold pressed olive oil has an acidity level of up to 1 percent. Virgin olive oil has an acidity level of up to 2 percent. Regular olive oil has up to 3.3 percent.

Beyond 3.3 percent acidity, according to the standards this is inedible olive oil. Dr. Licht notes, "The public should be made aware that even if the standard sets an upper limit of 3.3 percent still this does not mean that in actuality the oil cannot be consumed. The limit is hard to determine. In any event olive oil above 3.3 percent acidity is not fake. It is pure, clean olive oil, but it is not of high enough quality in the eyes of the Standards Institute. By the way, acidity level is advancing and rising all the time [as part of the normal aging process of olive oil]."

Another test is peroxide value: oil that comes in contact with air oxidizes and goes bad over time. The standard institute has determined that within one year of bottling the peroxide level should not exceed 8. It definitely can happen that when the bottle was filled the oil has a value of 2-3 and at the end of the year it is hovering around the 8- mark.

This leads us to an interesting conclusion: olive oil should not be stored, certainly not for more than a year, for its quality diminishes over time.

( In other words, throw out the oil so you have to buy NEW kosher oil next year at a higher price, GET IT??? - Who makes this s*** up? UOJ)

Another test is solvent residue. Olive oil can be 100 percent clean, but pose a health hazard. Using a chemical process oil can be extracted from olive dregs after the pressing. Although the oil is clean and has a low acidity level, its quality is poor and it may contain chemical residue.

Note: This article addresses consumer, not halachic issues surrounding olive oil (except for the sidebar).

The closer Chanukah came the stiffer the competition became. Dealers sent samples of competing brands to private labs for testing and reveled in the findings: none met the standards for olive oil. But their exultant claims competing brands were "fake," were based on a lack of knowledge and understanding, for the standards institute does not have a separate set of criteria for candlelighting oil.

Did a shyster infiltrate the group of dealers involved in the import and marketing of candlelighting oil and deceive the public by diluting olive oil? This claim goes unsupported. It goes without saying that the chareidi consumer should not buy olive oil blindly but should choose the product based on the trustworthiness of the importer, manufacturer and seller, and of course "mehudar" kashrus.

Ho-Hum just another day in the world of bull**** hashgachas.

The Israeli Attorney General's office has ordered police to launch a criminal investigation into Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's purchase of a Jerusalem home, the Justice Ministry said Monday.

Israel's state comptroller, a government watchdog, has already investigated allegations that Olmert bought the house at a price significantly below market value, opening suspicions of fraud and bribery.

If indicted, he would be forced to step down, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger.

Insurance fraud costs Americans at least $80 billion a year.

If this illegal activity were a legitimate industry, its profits would exceed Toyota, IBM, Wal-Mart and Microsoft. If measured by sales, insurance fraud would crush Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble and Coca-Cola among many more of the Forbes Global 2000.

The New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud, a cooperative effort by insurance companies in New York, has launched a public campaign to raise public awareness with respect to the forms of insurance fraud, the cost to consumers and the consequences of fraud.

“Insurance fraud takes many forms from those who collect workers’ compensation benefits even though they are able to work, to people who stage accidents to collect insurance money, to unscrupulous health care providers who bill twice for the same service,” Frank Henry, special investigations manager for One Beacon Insurance, said. “Many people who would never think of robbing a bank, stealing a car or burglarizing a home believe insurance fraud is a victimless crime. But, we are all victims of insurance fraud, as it costs everyone in higher premiums and higher prices on goods and services. Insurance fraud takes money out of the pockets of everyone.”

With approximately 25 percent of insurance premium dollars going toward the effects of fraud, the New York Alliance Against Insurance Fraud urges everyone who suspects insurance fraud is being committed to contact the alliance at 1-888-FRAUD-NY or 1-888-372-8369.

Have I missed something in the last couple of years?

Is there a Jewish criminal justice system in this country?

Are these Rabeim proposing that we police our own molesters pursuant to Biblical authority?

Based on the Mincha leining from Yom Kippur, doesn't a beit din have an obligation to apply corporal punishment to a rapist, to a man who molests a boy, etc.?

If you're going to hide behind the Bible, the, dammit man, go the whole way.

The fact is that the Rabeim who come up with these policies may be so out of touch with reality that they actually think that they're helping the community by sweeping these horrors under the rug. They're so afraid of a hit to the kehila's reputation or the yeshiva's pocketbook that they will allow these monsters to exist as an open secret for years.

Instead of working to help victims and stop the monsters, they'd rather pretend that nothing is happening. This policy is an absolute joke. Lehavdil, I think that we can learn from certain catholic churches that have implemented a very strict reporting policy. The policy is: CALL THE POLICE. Three words. It's not that difficult. Even someone used to gesticulating himself out of a Talmud can grasp the concept.

Go on certain Church websites, and there is a link to report observed or suspected abuse. The link leads to numbers for child protective services and the police. The link does not send you to the priest or chief whazzawuzzit.

We also bear responsibility as parents. Talk to your kids. Find out if there's anything going on. If there's a problem: Be Strong and CALL THE POLICE.

If your kid is in Kolko's school, then pull the kid out. Let the school die. One raped child is not worth any number of chachamim. Really.

Once school administrations see that they'll be out of a job if they let monsters roam the halls, then they'll have to take steps to prevent this madness.

If you're a teacher and you suspect a problem and the principal isn't doing anything about it: CALL THE POLICE. If you get fired, you'll be financially set for life.

I understand that institution and the jerks that run them have to protect themselves, but that's no excuse for individuals refusing to find the courage to act.

Everybody knows R' Dovid Choen is a fraud. When YOB chickened out summer of 2006 they said let's go to R' Dovid Choen to hear the case. Suddenly now after all these years they wanted to go to a rov. I knew what a dishonest person he is. I knew he was time bomb. He had a chance to help out another abuse victim years earlier and instead tried dissuading him from going the police. That victim did go to the police and the Rabbi was arrested. In that case the victim was still a minor. Unfourtanatley, for many who have passed their 21st birthday and the crime was committed in New York State, the Stature of Limitations prevent them from filing criminal or civil claims. Congress is working on changing that law. When they do, there will be an unprecedented amount of pending lawsuits against Yeshiva's.

On this past Yom Kippur, some of the congregated at R' Dovid Choen disturbed many who attended by taking non-stop instead of praying. His synagogue is a zoo.

The easiest way to receive a heter is to go to R'Dovid Choen. He will okay anything, including child molestation.

In response to the comment above that david cohen serves as a halachik advisor to NIRC, that is truly a sad testimonial to Rabbi Herman Neuberger. Rabbi Neuberger was a true ish yashar and David Cohen is the exact opposite. It is no wonder that there are so many white collar criminals in Flatbush when you have so called poskim like david cohen who simply throw the shulchan aruch in the garbage when paskening on financial issues involving gentiles and the government. David Cohen acknowledges that the Shulchan Aruch, Tur and Rambam all prohibit tax evasion but he thinks that he can ignore all of them on the theory that they probably did not mean what they said.

He then adds this gem:

What a hypocrite! The smug jerk keeps lashing out at Gil with a straight face when he does the same thing himself.

I do not publicize any allegation unless there are three people willing to lend their name to the allegation. That does not mean I do not believe them.

As many mental health professionals and attorneys have repeatedly told me, they have never come across a case where the victim totally fabricated the allegation of sexual abuse. Exaggeration, maybe, but fabrication, no.

I do believe that there is one or more very ill predator in every school!(camps as well)

I have been hearing conflicting accounts about his stance on going to the police.

I know for a fact that when people close to him have sought his advice he has encouraged them to go to the police. I also know that he can sometimes have an attitude problem, can be very rude and can generally display poor social skills when dealing with people he does not know as well. This could explain any possible double standard.

Ganging up on him over taxes is not so simple. There is a discussion in the Talmud about improper tax grabs. My venting here may not meet the criteria but Western govts introduced taxes in the last century as a "temporary" measure. In this country, both Democrats & Republicans are guilty of out of control spending and pork barrell politics that are an outrage.

At least in this area, Dovid Cohen may just be following the lead of Rav Bick zl (who he sometimes quotes). Rav Bick is said to have held that income tax evasion is mutter, although he was smart enough to not say it explicitly.

Any rav that condones tax cheating is a criminal and a no-good bum. There are legal tax shelters and loopholes, but outright cheating?

The Torah absolutely forbids one to cheat/steal from anyone...there is dina d'malchuta as well. Is this a way to repay the U.S. government for its benevolence to us immigrants and wanderers?

Rav Pam zt'l...said that tax cheating is the line that one must never cross for it leads to compromising all our values. He said as well, that using every tax loophole may be mutar l'halacha, but is not a way a God fearing Jew should conduct himself.

Dovid Cohen is a no-good bullvan that should be ignored. He's out of his mind!

On another point.

Hatzoloh members as well as every Jew is required to violate the Shabbos, Yom Kippur... to save a life. In matter of fact the well accepted psak is that one is not only permitted to drive a choleh m'sukan to a hospital on Shabbos, he may also return by car...lest he hesitate even for a vital second of getting the choleh m'sukan to the hospital.

My hatzoloh arsenal is anything that attracts the attention of the masses, to the death sentence imposed upon a child that is a victim of sexual abuse. I will use any means that is legal to uproot this evil that has been ignored, covered up...and will continue to do so.

If mesira, lashon hara, rechilus, laitzunos, nivel peh (controlled) is part of that arsenal, so be it. I will proudly make my case to the Ribono Shel Olam when my time is up.

UOJ, what you have done is nothing short of heroic having the guts to peel back the Band-Aids and let the healing of the victims begin. As R’ Yaakov Kamentzki has said, “if an abuse victim does not follow the Halachah because of what he experienced, the abuser gets those aveiros”. The pain is real and lived with on a daily basis.

A close friend of mine just told me this horrible story. He was married for over a decade, and had problems with intimacy and felt it was evil, disgusting, and not necessary. For all this time his wife felt that he didn’t find her attractive, and felt depressed despite his reassurances. As a result of your blog the suppressed memories came back, and he recalled vividly being molested over 22 years before. This realization made him understand his discomfort and embarrassment involved in intimacy. This disclosure has helped facilitate healing with this couple, though obviously not fully.

While my friend’s abuser is free to walk about like an upstanding citizen, he is left with the troubles caused. Because the abuser is so respected no rabbi believed what he was saying, sending back to more abuse, while chastising him for having the chutzpah to say such things.

To all Rabbis:
When a person comes to you with an allegation of abuse, they are coming to you out of pain. Don’t blow them off, lecture them about Derech Eretz, and say it can’t be. A dayan at the time that the accused is in front of him, must believe that he may have done what he is accused of. As the saying goes “Kabdehu V’Chashdehu, respect him BUT suspect him”.

The page is http://www.meredithmaran.com/mag_bride_abused.htm

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Rav Pam was a known machmir on ethical issues.

Meanwhile, here's a TV report of the latest tax legislation winding through Congress. They want to abolish the property tax for education and switch it to income tax based. Jurisdictions will be able to vote on how much tax they want to pay. This will be great for the haymishe in the 5 Towns & Brooklyn but terrible if you live in less haymish areas where the goyim & seculars can vote your new tax level into the stratosphere.

oil that comes in contact with air oxidizes and goes bad over time.

It's not a chidush that food, including oil, will go bad. It's definitely a bad idea to use highly peroxidized oils for food. They're absorbed into the skin, so if you wouldn't eat it, don't use it for cosmetic or massage purposes either.

Eisgrau's daughter went to a world-renown American rabbi (circa 2002, Dovid Cohen on Ohel, friendly with Lewis Brenner's family), famous for fighting sexual abuse, with her story. He was nice. He said he would get back to her. He called the rabbis who rule the community in Baltimore. Several sources say he was threatened that if he got involved, all backing for his institutions would dry up. Another source in the Orthodox rabbinate say that serious Baltimore Orthodox rabbis investigated the charges against Eisgrau and found them baseless. They relayed this to rabbi Dovid Cohen who then dropped out of the case.

When Eisgrau's daughter called him back, rabbi Dovid Cohen said, I'm sorry. I can't have anything to do with you.

Rabbi Dovid Cohen spoke at a Nefesh convention circa 2000. He encouraged the therapists there to raise public awareness of sexual abuse.

Annual Rabbinic Conference

The two day event, to be held Sunday and Monday, February 6 and 7 at the Hilton Hotel and Towers in Danbury, Connecticut

The conference will also feature a session on counseling the contemporary Orthodox family. a dual approach. The relevant considerations in Jewish law will be discussed by Rabbi Dovid Cohen, of the Gvul Yaavetz Congregation of Brooklyn, who also serves as the rabbinic authority for the Ohel Children’s Home, the largest social service agency in the Jewish community. He will describe the guidelines established by Jewish law for intervention in cases of Jewish families confronting the whole gamut of serious problems which are, unfortunately, much more prevalent today.

For a brochure containing registration and further program information on the annual Young Israel rabbinic conference, contact the National Council of Young Israel at: 3 West 16 Street, New York, NY 10011 or call 212 929-1525 ext. 115.

Even though that's a current link on the NCYI website, I suspect it may be outdated info. NCYI got into a huge fight with the Young Israel shul on the ground floor on West 16th which went to beis din then later court. I believe that the shul then kicked the National Council out of the upstairs office space and the NCYI in turn kicked the shul out of the organization. While they were still in the building together, the NCYI people would come down to daven mincha but there was a lot of hostility in the air and the two sides wouldn't talk to each other.

Neil Rubin courageously saved some printer's ink in the latest issue of the Baltimore Jewish Times (September 21, 2007 / Tishrei 9 5768). His section on Phil Jacobs ("Jacobs Honored" - p.23) shyly hides right next to the tall seafood add under Rubin's big article on Mr. Moshe Arens, "GOOD FROM BAD - Former top Israeli diplomat details for Baltimoreans high costs of Israel's mistakes."

For your convenience, we capitalized the parts that never made it into the paper version of BJT and as a result were never seen by its fifty thousand readers. Ironically, the key words like the "allegations against once revered rabbis, both living and dead," "a hornet's neSt," and "Phil has warned our leadership that if you will not lead, if you do not do the right thing, we will" were edited out.

As all of us have witnessed, for the past couple of weeks BJT put out the letters of rabbi Moshe Eisemann's supporters, and now they printed a confusing piece on Jacobs. By the way, is it true that Phil gave over the names of the survivors to Mrs. Aviva Weisbord who's husband rabbi Beryl Weisbord passed them on to rabbi Sheftel Neuberger? UOJ, can you please elaborate - what's going on with BJT and rabbi Eisemann?

What's the point about the yeshiva? The whole Atlanta is one big NIRC outpost. The main shul was started years ago by R' Aron Feldman's brother R' Emmanuel. The current rabbi, the son Ilan Feldman, is married to R' Yaakov Weinberg's daughter. No one has anything bad to say about him or about the many kollel guys that come from NIRC.

There were complaints about the yeshiva from locals who didn't want to provide financial support for a yeshiva that does not draw in town boys. When they first started at least, there were a number of boys that were rejects so to say from other yeshivas.

There is a problem with the Rabbi at the Young Israel who is in bed with Avi Weiss Liberal-radicals but that doesn't stop Gil Student from whoring himself as the guy's publisher.

Rubashkin Loses Control Again - Attacks Shmuel Light, Smashes Computer

Article Updated 6/2907

Once again, Moshe Rubashkin has publicly lost control of himself and attacked a Coucil employee in the middle of the JCC offices as horrified staff looked on. The victim this time was Rabbi Shmuel Light, longtime Council employee and Director of the Weatherization Program in the Council.

Witnesses report that the incident happened at around 1 p.m. today, in the Council offices at 392 Kingston Avenue. Rubashkin and Light were talking when, without warning Rubashkin started screaming and throwing things. He then started to shove and push Light. When Light broke away he smashed Light's computer and screamed that he was fired.

[The following details were added to the original article]

The altercation began when Rubashkin asked Light to take care of a tenant who had a problem with a child with medical problems. Light responded that there are social workers at the Council who would be more suited to the task.Rubashkin ordered Light to do as he told him to and started screaming. He picked up the computer monitor and smashed it, and did the same with the printer. He overturned Light's desk and started ripping up files. Then he grabbed Rabbi Light by the collar of his shirt and smashed him up against the wall and hit him. Light broke away and went to R. Shlomo Segal's office - Segal was at the door. Rubashkin chased him, grabbed him again and smashed him up against the wall again. Segal retreated into his office at this point. Rubashkin screamed that Light was fired and threw him out.

Police were called and took a report. Thus far no arrest has been made.

Light was taken to a local hospital for a tetanus shot as a precaution for a cut he received in the altercation.

Rubashkin has a long history of verbal and physical abuse. Many incidents have been public and witnessed by many. The following incidents are matters of public record:

Attacking Chairman of the Netzigim Yisroel Best in the middle of a Netzigim meeting. Rubashkin was arrested and Best had to be given an Order of Protection against Rubashkin.

Attacking Levi Huebner at a public meeting with Shmira, Hatzoloh and politicians in the Council offices.

Assaulting Eli Slavin, Yitzchok Holtzman and Eli Polterak at various times for disagreeing with him.

Assaulting employees in his textile plant.

A Council employee who refused to be identified reported that Rubashkin often loses his temper and screams at employees. Most of the employees are scared of losing their jobs, so they accept whatever verbal abuse they are given.

The other Council Directors are also victims of Rubashkin's public tirades, according to several witnesses. Both Tzvi Lang and Shmuel Plotkin have been on the receiving end of multiple dressing downs in front of JCC employees. "They take it like scared puppy dogs," reported the employee who refuses to be identified.

Ever since the appearance of the article "When Whispers Get Louder," the Baltimore Jewish Times has been publishing letters (weekly!) written by rabbi Moshe M. Eisemann's followers.

Many people in the community are perplexed: what message is BJT trying to send its readers now? The latest letter, written by one of rabbi Eisemann's "loyal students" (as he calls himself) rabbi Harvey Gornish in Sept. 28 issue (p. 5-7), says it all. Please read it very thoroughly and try to answer: what's going on?

It is particularly important that Unorthodox-Jew and the Jewish Survivors answer this troubling question.

P.S. In the same issue of BJT (p. 30), they published the article called "Wake-Up Call - Don't only pray during tough times, a noted lecturer advises." "A noted lecturer" is nobody else but "a lecturer and teacher at Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Pikesville" rabbi Yissochor Frand. There is a smiling photo of rabbi Frand with a caption: "Our goal for this year: keep in touch [with God]." And no word on child abuse, of course...

The U.S. attorney in Philadelphia charged Moshe Rubashkin with leaving hazardous waste at the textile plant in Allentown, Pa., and charged his son Sholom with misleading an investigation into a fire at the plant.

Moshe Rubashkin is a communal leader in the Chabad enclave of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where he is the chairman of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council. He had served 15 months in prison for writing bad checks from Montex, the now closed plant that specialized in bleaching and dyeing textiles.

The current charge is that he left drums of hazardous waste in the mill after it closed in 2001. A fire broke out there in 2005 that allegedly was exacerbated by the hazardous waste.

Both Rubashkins face up to five years in jail and a $250,000 fine.

BS'D

As a Chabad chossid myself, I am embarrassed that Chabad seems to be ignoring opinions of non-Chabad rabbonim.

We preach being modest, and we act stuck up. To be 'in your face' defying the rulings of gedoilim, just because they are not Lubavitch is separating ourselves from klall Yisroel.

We need to learn to respect other opinions and rulings, and not making light of the words of today's gedoilim just because they are not Chabad.

Maybe it all started when some ignorant Chabad 'chassidim' started saying 'we are the only Real Chassdus' and all the rest are not real Chassidim.

That horribly insulting concept, shows the ignorance and blinded attitudes of our current leaders who allow this kind of thinking to proliferate.

We are Chassidim, yes. We are Chassdim of a Rebbe who was a great godol and tzaddik. However, there are dozens of other Chassidisher Rebbes and Rabbonim today whose words we must not make light of.

We also must stop talking about the Rebbe as if he was the leader of all Klall Yisroel. While he was alive, he was 'one of many' gedoilim, and certainly did not represent the majority.

To keep repeating this shtus is to continue to insult the Chareidi world.

When are we going to show the ahavas Yisroel that we preach?

Are not other Chareidim as important as thost whom we approach for mivtzaim?

We continuously slap other Chareidim, yirai shamayim, in the face, ignoring them as though they are meaningless.... maybe it is because we do not currently have a leader. Our Rebbe, Olov Hasholom, was niftar, and we are without leadership.

I cannot believe that the Rebbe would condone this current haughty attitude of ours. And... if you would succeed to convince me that he would, I would leave Chabad, for that is wrong.

Chabad is not the only acceptable form of Yiddishkeit.

Chabad is NOT the only true chassidus.

Satmar, Munkacs, Ger, Bobov, Skvere, Kloisenberger, Skolen, and many others are also TRUE CHASSIDIM, and TRUE CHASSIDUS.

If a godol disagrees with Chabad, it does not mean he is a misnaged.

We keep showing everyone how great we are by how many people we drag into our Chabad Houses, and how many Chabad Houses we build all over the US, etc., ... But we never stop and praise these other Chassidim for the Tzdaka and Chessed they are doing that is beyond any in the history of Yidishkeit, or for the wonderful Yeshivois and Moisdois they build, and for the amazing kehillois of theirs that are thriving and growing beyond imagination.

We are not the only ones doing wonders... look around us!

We put these wonderful Chassidim down with snide comments, and ignorant remarks. That is horrible and bad enough. But this increased ignoring of their rulings is abominable.

I am deeply ashamed these days to be a Lubavitcher Chossid.

Okay... I will not get off my soap box.

Let us all.... ALL Chassidim, those with 'down hats' and those with Shtreimlech, all respect each other and every admire and recognize each others rulings.

Let us all enjoy the Sukkos Yom Tov and have a G'Mar Toiv.

Signed,
One Lubo who does not spit at other Chassidim, Chassidishe Rebbes, and Gedoilim

Shaya Boymelgreen spoke with “Globes” today to refute rumors on some websites, which alleged questionable borrowing practices by him and his real estate companies.
“It is irresponsible to spread rumors, and even more irresponsible to publish them,” said Boymelgreen, the controlling shareholder in Boymelgreen Capital Ltd.

“The rumors bandied today about Azorim are malicious and baseless. The sole purpose is to harm shareholders. I and the companies I control have never dealt with the gray market and have never taken loans from this market. The credit crisis in the US does not affect any of the companies I control.

“Belying the rumors, no financial institutions which we work with in Israel or the US have contacted me. On the contrary, they believe that my properties are traded at less than their real value.”

Boymelgreen added that his legal advisers were examining their options and investigating the source of the mendacious disinformation behind today’s rumors in the capital market.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants peace and is a friendly leader, Neturei Karta International spokesman Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss said in a statement issued ahead of a meeting between the Jewish organization leaders and the Islamic republic's hardline president.

Although Ahmadinejad received a blistering welcome from the Columbia University president, who said the hard-line leader behaved like "a petty and cruel dictator", and from thousands of demonstrators protesting the fact that he was invited to speak at the university, it appears that there are some Jews who welcome his visit.

According to Weiss, the international accusations that the president is a warmonger are not true. His colleague Rabbi Leopold Margulies added that UOJ is to blame for the tension in the Middle East.

When You’re An Incest Survivor
© (2007) By Vicki Polin, MA, NCC, LCPC, ATR-BC - Executive Director, The Awareness Center, Inc.
http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/incestsurvivor.pdf

The following was originally presented at a News Media Event - Calling for State and National Laws Lifting Statute of Limitations of Survivor Lawsuits at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law - Yeshiva University, on September 25, 2007

Estimates of the number of incest survivors vary. These discrepancies can be attributed to the fact that incest remains an extremely under-reported crime. According to statistics on the National Center for Victims of Crime web page, 46 percent (46%) of children who are sexually violated are victimized by a family member.

To explain why the windows legislation is so important I would like to share my story with you. My story is not that much different than many other incest survivors.

To the outside world I grew up in a typical upper middle class, loving, suburban family. A family in which both of my parents were seen as honorable and respected. My father worked long hours and my mother was very active volunteering time at the local PTA and in Girl Scouts.

My parents always wanted the best for their children. There was always enough food on our table, we lived in a safe home and neighborhood, we were well clothed and went on many wonderful family vacations. We were a family that did things together. When we were sick either my mother or father would hold us in our arms -- and if need be stay up with us all night long with us.

Unfortunately, there was another side to my childhood -- one in which was supposed to be kept secret. I was taught from a very early age that it was important to be "loyal to the family". Meaning what went on at home was supposed to be kept secret.

No one would have ever guessed that my mother was being battered or that my father had an explosive temper. Like many other children who grow up in an abusive environment, my siblings and I believed it was much better for us to use our tiny little bodies as shields to protect our mother from being hurt.

There was another secret that I kept for many years. I was being sexually abused at home. I don't know how old I was when the sexual abuse began. When I was young I just thought that was one of the many ways a parent would expressed love to a child. The abuse was done with tender loving care. As I got older I started feeling funny about what was happening. By the time I was in high school I began to refuse to be touched sexually. Unfortunately, doing so made the physical abuse get worse. I didn't know what to do to make the emotional, physical and sexual abuse stop.

During my high school years my guidance counselor was aware that something was wrong at home. He was aware that I was overwhelmed and often wrote passes for me so I could just hang out in his office instead of going to classes. I didn’t have the vocabulary to tell him what was going on. I would just say "my father was being mean again". Eventually I trusted him enough to show him the bruises on my arms. At one point he brought me to the school nurse who told me “my bruises wouldn't photograph well enough, and there was nothing they could do."

When I was sixteen I attempted suicide for the first time. I remember my school counselor asking me if I was being sexually abused at home. My response to him was no. I figured what good would it do to say yes. He wasn’t able to help me with the physical abuse. I was also too embarrassed to say yes.
Both the physical and sexual abuse ended when I was in my early twenties. Unfortunately, on many levels the emotional abuse continues to this day.

Over the years as I’ve been on my own personal healing journey I’ve thought about filling a civil suit against my parents, yet I could never bring myself to doing that. My parents were not always mean or cruel. They were often very loving and kind. I always wanted to believe that they loved me, that they really cared about me. I often made excuses for them that they just didn't know any better.

When I was twenty I confronted my mother for the first time about both the physical and sexual abuse. Her reaction was to tell my father what I said. At first both of my parents disclosed to me that they were also sexually abused as children. The strange thing is that they both denied being abusive towards me. Because I refused to recant my story, I was basically cut out of the family. There were a few brief respite of my exile, yet from that point on I basically no longer had parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or siblings. I was no longer invited to family functions. I was not allowed to watch my nieces or nephews grow up. I was no longer seen as part of my family. I became nobody's child.

Through the years I felt both anger and sadness for what happened to me. I yearned to be part of my family. I would often ask myself, how does one sue their parents? How does one emotionally put themselves into a place to do such a thing?

The first time I disclosed to an adult that I was being physically abused was when I was in sixth grade. The first time I disclosed to an adult that I was being sexually abused was when I was twenty.

Last year at the age of 47 I reconnected with one of my relatives who I hadn’t seen in about twenty-five years. It was after that interaction I began to seriously considered filing a civil suit against my parents. What had stopped me in the past was that I had fantasied that a miracle would happen and there would be some sort of reconciliation. If I filed a civil suit all bets would be off for my fantasy to become reality.

During one of the conversations I had with my relative, she disclosed that she was ordered not to communicate with me until the statute of limitations of filing a civil suit had expired. Once that date passed, she had no idea of how to find me.

After the conversation I had with my relative I couldn’t stop crying. It finally hit me how much I’ve lost. I finally found the courage to seek out an attorney to file a civil suit against my offenders. The problem was that in the eye’s of the law it has taken me too long to come to this point.

I am not alone. Many adult survivors of child sexual abuse are also facing the same stumbling block as I did. Without the “Window legislation” that would either change or abolish the statute of limitations filing a civil suit, my offenders and the offenders of other survivors can never be held accountable for their actions.

Here are a few things incest survivors want you to remember when it comes to legislation abolitioning both civil and criminal statutes of limitations and the “Window legislation”.

When you are an incest survivor . . .

* you don't have parents who are first and foremost concerned with your safely.

* you don't have your parents to fight to protect your rights.

* at times you have to deny your own reality in order to survive.

* at times suicide seems like the only way out.

* you walk around with a burden of tremendous confusion, guilt and rage.

* at times it feels like there is no one you can go to for help or if you tell anyone, they won’t believe you or do anything about it.

* you can heal but you always carry scars.

* you don't have parents who will support you through the arduous path of suing perpetrators who are often still scary to you and in a legal system that can be insensitive to the toll such suit can have on you.

* choosing to sue often means giving up the only thread of hope for the family you never had. It is one of the hardest things to do, and one that often takes years to be able to do. Perpetrators often rely on that loss to guard their interests and protect their secrets.

"Window" Legislation - Power to Survivors of Child Sex Abuse
By ChildHaveRights
http://youtube.com/user/ChildHaveRights

Message from Vicki Polin, Executive Director - The Awareness Center, Inc.

September 30, 2007

Years ago I worked with young children who provided testimony in court regarding their victimization. Victim advocates often help children through the process by scheduling a time prior to the court date for the child to walk around the court room and also meet the judge (if possible). By doing this, it helps to elevate some of the tension and anxiety a child might have.

Someday you or another adult survivor may decide it's right for you to file a civil suit against your offender(s). Without the "Window" legislation you may not be allowed to do so. We need your help to make it possible for you to have choice.

We need each and everyone one of you to help to make laws better in the United States, Israel, Canada and beyond. Not just for children, but for adult survivors too!

The youtube video (see link above) is being supplied in hopes of helping you and any other adult survivors of child sexual abuse feel more comfortable about speaking out at legislative hearings, by seeing what it's like to do so.

The first two slide of the video are difficult to read. Below is the text of the slides

The following photographs were taken at CALL TO ACTION FOR STATE & NATIONAL LAWS LIFTING The STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS
ON Sex Crimes Against Children on both criminal and civil suits.

The news media even took place on September 25, 2007 at 11:00 am at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University - Jacob Burns Moot Court Room, New York, New York

It is estimated that one in five boys and one in four girls in America are victims of childhood sexual abuse. Most of the perpetrators are known by the victims. But, far too many of these crimes go unreported for many years -- only 10 percent of victims go to authorities -- and most of the offenders escape responsibility.

When victims finally -- and courageously -- speak up, they are denied justice
as arbitrary statutes of limitations prohibit them from seeking legal recourse.

Two states -- California in 2003 and Delaware in 2007, led by Sen. Peterson -- have enacted legislation that amends these arbitrary deadlines to enable both criminal prosecutions and civil actions against the perpetrators.

In California, "window" legislation, which suspended the civil limitation, helped identify 300 previously anonymous predators and enabled victims to seek justice again them. For the past several years, Assemblywoman Markey has introduced similar legislation in New York. It has passed in the Assembly, but has stalled each time in the Senate.

From: "America's Most Wanted"

Since the show's inception in 1988, America's Most Wanted has captured more than 950 fugitives, helping thousands of victims worldwide get justice. But justice isn't always possible for everyone.

"One of biggest frustrations for us," says program host John Walsh, "is working on cases where the victims in some states will likely never see justice. Because each state in this country has its on criminal laws, often the statute of limitations precludes victims from ever seeing their attackers pay the price for their crimes." In New York State, for example, sexual assault cases have a statute of limitations of 10 years, which hardly seems acceptable given that the national collection of DNA evidence is a relatively new initiative and it often takes years and years to get a match or a "hit" on a particular criminal's DNA.

John Walsh references a recent case profiled on AMW: A man named Altemio Sanchez was wanted for a number of rapes and a number of murders in Buffalo, New York. The fugitive was eventually captured and has since been sentenced to prison for the three murders. However, even though DNA evidence linked Sanchez to more than a dozen rapes, none of those victims will ever get closure because the statute of limitations had run out. "It's time for Statute of Limitations laws to catch up with the 21st century," said John Walsh. "Only then, will victims of crime have a true opportunity to seek and receive justice," he said.
