Texas rushes 1000s extra staff to hospitals as patients statewide accelerate to 8,000. In the worsening rural Panhandle, half the patients in Lubbock hospitals have COVID. 12 waited for beds Tues night, said Dr Ron Cook @ Lubbock Co health authority

Overwhelmed El Paso morgues pay prisoners $2 hourly to move bodies. A crush of patients forces non-COVID cases elsewhere in the state

5,400+ extra medical personnel are deployed around Texas by the state, said Lara Anton, spokeswoman @ TX DOH, not including military & volunteer help

“There are only so many personnel to go around. What we see in places like El Paso is not sustainable in large part” said Dr Mark McClellan, former FDA Commissioner

Maryland has a clearinghouse on open beds so hospitals need only make 1 call. The state also issued an emergency order prohibiting most visitors until further notice

New York City is shutting schools to try to stop renewed spread of the virus, Mayor de Blasio said today in a painful about-face.

The nation’s largest public school system will halt in-person learning Thurs, the mayor tweeted.

The city had said school buildings would close if 3% of virus tests citywide over a 7-day period came back positive. As the rate neared that point last week, de Blasio advised parents to prepare for a shutdown.

The rate has now passed that mark.

Even as the school system stayed open, nearly 1,500 classrooms had temporary closures after students or staff tested positive. There were also entire school shutdowns in neighborhoods where virus cases rose rapidly.

2,300+ students-staff at public schools tested positive since the start of the school year.

While many big school districts decided to start the fall term with online learning, de Blasio pushed for opening schools. The Democrat argued students need services they got in school & many parents count on it to get back to work.

The reopening date, originally Sept 10, was postponed twice as teachers, principals & parents said safety precautions & staffing were inadequate. Teachers unions repeatedly threaten to strike.

NYC agreed to changes, including hiring 1000s more teachers & testing to 20% of all students & staff monthly for the virus.

When high schools finally opened their doors, de Blasio hailed it as “an absolutely amazing moment”

“This is what makes NYC great. We did something other cities around this country could only dream of because we have fought back this pandemic so well”

Nat Lewin must be totally insulted that the Fressers petitioned SCOTUS without bringing him on board for his "expertise".

I can understand the Fressers ghosting him, considering how the blowhard has such a weak track record & made a fool out of himself with Rubashkin.

But if that was the Fresser cheshbon, then why go with another LOSER in the form of Avi Schick?

I'm disappointed that the Beckett Fund went along with the Agudah Fressers. I thought they were more level headed but they seem to be acting here like the irrational ACLU in trying to make a point at the expense of pikuach nefesh.

I think the Fressers bashmeck that they've a shot with this particular Supreme Court because all it's members to the Right happen to be religious Catholics at a time when the Vatican is moping the same self-serving BS as the Fressers. Because they are more interested in money & control, they are completely fine with the human sacrifices that it costs. The Justices may be smart people but I'm not sure they can see the true sinister motivations as the Agudah-Vatican-Satmar trio sputter their false pieties. Maybe someone can show the Justices that everytime this trio has gotten together it is for some selfish, nefarious purpose like protecting molesters & sticking it to victims.

Agudah was emboldened by the recent statement by Justice Alito on religious liberty, and by ACB sitting on the Court.

Their timing is wrong as the pandemic spins out of control!

They still have hurdles that are almost insurmountable:

1- They have to convince the Court that there was an outright demonstration of the violation of the Religious Liberty Clause with the intent of violating their freedom of religion. That is if they can get the Court to hear it. Their argument that Governor Cuomo picked on Orthodox Jews is a sham!

2) ...Captain Alfred Dreyfus-Berland...
3) ...Haven't been sick with COVID-19 before, will not have it now....

1 - Tipshim --- Impossible to argue with false propaganda, hundreds died in Bnei Brak during the first wave of Covid. Seemingly, the second wave is not as deadly initially, we'll know soon enough.

The Justice Dept on Fri declined to extend parole of Jonathan Pollard, who was convicted of spying on America for Israel. The 66 yr old is now free to travel to the Jewish state.

Pollard attorneys Jacques Semmelman & Eliot Lauer announced the US Parole Commission notified their client they terminated the parole that had lasted 5 years.

“Mr Pollard's no longer subject to curfew, no longer prohibited working for a company without US govt monitoring on its computers, no longer required to wear a wrist tracker & free to travel anywhere, including Israel, for temporary / permanent residence, as he wishes”

Pollard responded telling reporters he's glad to move to Israel where he'll be able to care for his wife who's sick with cancer. He expressed gratitude to Israel’s Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer for his help bringing about the end to his parole.

Pollard, who served 30 years in prison for providing intelligence to Israel, publicly appealed to Netanyahu last year to ask him to intervene on his behalf to Trump to commute his parole, so he could care for his sick wife.

Given the high profile of Pollard, it's likely the decision required ok from higher-ups. In setting the ex-spy free, Trump bestowed yet another gift to Israel, which lobbied for years for Pollard to be allowed to move to the Jewish state.

An ex-US Navy analyst, Pollard was sentenced to in 1987. His imprisonment was long a point of tension in Israel-US relations. Israeli & Jewish leaders petitioned US counterparts for years to secure his release.

After his release in 2015, Pollard was given 5 years probation, during which he wasn't allowed to travel outside the US. Parole also required him to stay in his NY home from 7 pm to 7 a.m., to submit any computer he uses for inspection, and to wear a GPS monitoring device at all times.

The 66 yr old was made an Israeli citizen in 1995 & expressed desire to settle in the Jewish state with his family.

In 2017, a federal appeals court rejected Pollard’s request to lift his parole 0s.

In 2018, Channel 12 reported the Justice Dept refused a formal request by Israel to allow Pollard to emigrate. Netanyahu also asked Trump to let Pollard move to Israel.
