WORDS OF ADVICE TO THE "OU", TORAH VODAATH AND THE AGUDATH ISRAEL! STEVE SAVITZKY - GET RID OF BELSKY OR I WILL - I NEVER BLUFF!!

*************************************************************
Yisroel Belsky - In The OU Advertising Campaign In China!

I'M ASKING THE GLOBAL JEWISH COMMUNITY TO NOT PURCHASE ANY OU ENDORSED PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF CHINA! I FIRMLY BELIEVE - THAT THEIR LACK OF STRINGENT SUPERVISION - COMBINED WITH THE CHINESE FOOD MANUFACTURERS' RECORD ON KNOWINGLY SHIPPING TAINTED FOOD TO THE U.S., CAUSES BOTH A SERIOUS HEALTH AND KASHRUS DANGER! EAT CHINESE MANUFACTURED FOOD AT YOUR PERIL!

"Perhaps the most high-profile examples of these potential dangers come from last year's tainted pet food scandal and the halting of questionable food products from China.

The pet food disaster, which slowly evolved into the largest recall of pet food in U.S. history, involved exported wheat gluten from China that contained the toxic chemical melamine and was used as an additive in food sold under more than 100 brand names. Hundreds of dogs and cats died; an official tally was never issued. In addition, U.S. health officials disclosed that up to 3 million broiler chickens had been fed the contaminated surplus pet food and then had been sold to restaurants and supermarkets across the country.

That was followed by a recall of almost a million tubes of toothpaste from China that were contaminated with a chemical used in antifreeze. The toothpaste had been distributed to institutions for the mentally ill, hospitals and prisons in the South.

And, shortly after that, U.S. health officials halted the importation of farmed fish from China because of chemical contamination in the fish feed."

Editorial - THE NEW YORK TIMES

The Case of the Poisoned Pet Food

Published: February 9, 2008

The Bush administration has moved with welcome vigor to prosecute two Chinese companies and an American importer involved in the sale of contaminated pet food ingredients that killed or sickened thousands of dogs and cats. After last year’s flood of tainted imports, American regulators have been struggling with limited success to strengthen their inspection capabilities. Those efforts must be buttressed with criminal prosecutions of anyone who knowingly sold harmful or untested products.

An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration led to the indictments by a federal grand jury in Missouri this week. The importer, ChemNutra, based in Las Vegas, contracted to buy wheat gluten, a plant protein used as a binding agent in pet foods, from an export broker in China. The Chinese broker bought the wheat gluten from a Chinese processing company.

The Chinese processor is charged with lacing the product with melamine, an inexpensive additive that can make the wheat gluten look like it contains more protein than it actually does. The export broker is accused of mislabeling the shipments with an inaccurate product code to escape mandatory inspections in China.

ChemNutra, is accused of knowing that the shipments had been miscoded — and would not be inspected in China — yet failed to disclose that to American pet food manufacturers who bought the gluten. The indictment does not charge that ChemNutra knew the shipments were adulterated with melamine, and company officials deny any intent to defraud.

If prosecutors prove ChemNutra’s wrongdoing, stiff fines and a jail sentence would provide a strong deterrent. In the absence of an extradition treaty, it is unlikely that officials of the Chinese companies can be brought to justice here. The administration must press China to strengthen its regulations and the agencies that enforce them. Beijing needs to understand that American consumers are increasingly wary of any product made in China and need a clear sign that criminal behavior there will be caught and punished.

I'm informed by a trusted individual that the Newsday article - described below by Shaul, was published on March 8, 1998. I'll be posting it as soon as I get it! It was a weekend edition...UOJ

Shaul Writes:

About ten years ago there was an article carried on the front page of Newsday with a picture of a beaten up chassidishe yungerman from Boro Park. I remember his face was all bloody and swollen. It looked just like the work of the Nazis. Inside was a picture of Belsky and another gangster, both of whom were invoved with executing the kidnapping and torture. That next day the TV news cameras were focused on the home of Belsky. The story was carried on the TV news.

The story was that Belsky had gotten paid to form a Beit Din from which he ordered the kidnapping and torture of this yungerman. The object was to extract a Get which under Halacha he could not do since a forced Get is not valid. The husband had claimed his wife had never went to Beth Din with him but had instead gone to Goyyish court to take away his kids and bank accounts.

Only after she took everything from him in court which she was not entitled to in Jewish Law and would not have won in a Beit Din, she paid Belsky to extract a Get, which is according to my rabbi with whom I discussed this story this morning, absolutely invalid and possul. My rabbi added that the concept of the Rambam allowing a beth din to administer force to obtain a Get is only when both the husband and wife both agree to accept the ruling of a particular Beit Din. Only, then and only if the husband does not follow that Beit din ruling which he accepted to follow, may that Beit Din force the husband to abide and fulfill the Mizvah of abiding by the ruling he accepted to follow.

In a case where there is no prior acceptance of the Beit din by the husband then that beit din has no jurisdiction over the matter there is no mitzvah for the husband to follow their rulling. Any Get obtained from a Beit din by force would not be valid according to the Rambam since they are not the Beit din of the husband and so he has no mitzvah to listen to them.

My rabbi explained that according to the rambam when he has a mitzva to obey the Beit din only then could forcing the husband to give a Get be valid. In a case where some three bums get together and call themselves a beit din, there is no mitzva to listen to them and according to the Rambam too such a forced Get is invalid and possul.

In the Newsday story there was no prior agreement, the couple was fighting it out in goyyish court. When Belsky ordered the kidnapping and torture of the husband the Rambam's concept did not apply. According to my rabbi the halacha is anyway not like the Rambam and no Beit din may order force.

However as I wrote above, even according to the Rambam where there is no acceptance by both sides to follow a specific Beit Din, that Beit Din even if hired by the wife, has no authority to issue orders against the husband. In that case reported in Newsday, as I remember, it was very clear that the husband never went to the Belsky Beit din and that the wife was using the goyyish courts.

The bottom line is Belsky who orders the kidnaping and torture of a Jew is in my opinion the same and worse then a brown shirt nazi.

I agree with my rabbi who said this morning that Belsky should not be permitted to be involved in Kashruth or any Jewish function.

I am writing this to the public with the consent of my rav who is very orthodox and learned Chacham. I only wish I had the Newsday article to display here.

Thank you and Shabbat Shalom to all.
Shaul ben Baruch Haim

The message stated it was endorsed by .....Rabbi Mordechai Wolmark Rosh Yeshiva Shaarei Torah.

************************************************************

A grateful "Yisroel Belsky" responds via e-mail from his hospital bed......

The National Alliance estimates about one in 17 Americans suffers from a serious mental illness, and mental illness affects one in five families and has affected me terribly says Yisroel Belsky. But as common as it is, families often are in the dark because mental illness is not on their radar the way cancer or heart problems are, Belsky says.

Often, they don't even know the symptoms, like covering up for child-rapists, annulling Jewish marriages for serious money, and getting paid big bucks to claim non-kosher meat as kosher.

No one else recognized it "because mental illness was not on someone's radar screen ”and because there was so much stigma. To people looking in, I was probably selfish, reckless and moody. The reality was that I was suffering inside. I wouldn't wish it on anyone."

Once a person or one's family recognizes a potential problem, getting help is the next step. And it's often a difficult one. UOJ reached out, I was not happy, but I realize it's for the benefit of the entire Jewish world. Mendel Epstein calls it tough love!

Often the person suffering from the mental illness does not understand that she or he is sick, says Ira D. Glick, a physician and psychiatry professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine and my doctor.

"If you go break your leg and run into the doctor, the doctor will put a cast on it and give you medicine for it," Glick says. "You say, 'Thank you. Thank you.'

"In our field, when somebody has bipolar disorder or anxiety disorder or depression or schizophrenia, what do they say? What do most people say?

'There's nothing wrong with me. I don't need this treatment.' "

That is why it is so important to have UOJ involvement, Glick says. "We see UOJ as a partner in the treatment team. It's the patient, family and doctor all working together to make a diagnosis, set goals and carry out treatment."

But because it is so difficult under most state laws to have a person hospitalized, families often have to wait until there is a crisis, Belsky says.

"You must wait until they meet the criteria for hospitalization; in most states they have to become so gravely disabled that their life is in danger," he says. "And then you have to call the police or you have to call UOJ to come into your house and take your family member to the hospital. And I want to tell you that it's one of the most traumatic events that will ever happen to you."

Rabbi Wolmark is very wrong; come join me Mordechai, I especially love the feeling I get after they take off the strait-jacket for a few minutes every day....

The victims mishpacha showed up in Kirschner's shul and started yelling what a crook he is. Kirschner took off, never returning to the shul again. About 6 months later, so many people were complaining that the police started looking for him. They eventually found him living under an alias at a 5 star hotel.

He pays peanuts to get the shvachste mashgichim and he himself rarely comes by unless it's to pick up his pay. Yosef Meystel has been accused of molesting children while being an administer at a yeshiva in Indiana. Below is an article in which he is mentioned as he is still working in the nursing home field. Over the years there had been several accusations made against Meystel of child molestation, yet do to the fact that the statute of limitations ran out no criminal charges or civil suits have been filed. http://www.theawarenesscenter.org/Meystel_Yosef.html. This is one of those cases that things could change if the windows legislation in Indiana would be made into law.

Due the issue of statutes of limitations survivors across the United States have not been able to have their day in court. Our hope is that as time goes by each state will either abolished the statutes of limitations, or that there windows legislation passed granting survivors of various offenders the opportunity to have their day in court.

Yesterday I was in Denver, CO providing testimony in a legislative hearing. The hopes of the windows legislation passing in the House of Representatives and the Colorado senate so that those who were abused in will have an opportunity to have their cases heard.

The Awareness Center needs your financial assistance to help us be able to cover our travel to various states over the next few months so that we can help provide testimony to help survivors have their day in court. New owners say nursing home’s past is not their own

Forest Park Review - February 7, 2008

When her husband's Alzheimer's began to overwhelm her, Patricia Howard started searching for a nursing facility that could care for him. A bit to her surprise, she settled on the village's only long-term care operation, located on Roosevelt Road, despite having heard the horror stories during her 20 years in Forest Park.
Two days after he was admitted to the Berkshire Nursing and Rehab Facility in July, Howard brought her husband back home. But, she says, not because of any fault with the facility.
"I don't know anything about spending a night away from him," Howard said of her 36-year marriage. "It's still hard."
Howard's husband soon returned to Berkshire and in the months that have followed she became a regular fixture in the hallways. Howard visits her husband daily and is on a first-name basis with the nurses, as well as Berkshire's management staff.
Which is why, she said, when the home was named in late November as one of the worst nursing facilities in the country by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, it was impossible for her to square that designation with her experience.
"I couldn't ask for anybody to be there more than these people have been there," Howard said.
That federal list of more than 120 nursing facilities across the country was compiled using information gleaned over the last few years, all of which was obtained prior to a new ownership group stepping in just days before Howard's husband became a patient. Berkshire Nursing and Rehab operates the facility formerly known as the Pavilion of Forest Park at 8200 Roosevelt Road.
"With this new team and myself here, people have done a lot better," David Berkowitz, the home's top administrator and co-owner said. "People like being here and want to be here."
Along with Yosef Meystel, Berkowitz bought the former Pavilion when the facility was put up on the real estate market and facing closure following years of violations and tens of thousands of dollars in fines from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Since stepping in on July 1, 2007, Berkowitz said he has hired nine new department heads and turned over many of the staffing positions as well. New training methods were implemented and employees understand there is a greater level of accountability, said Berkowitz.
A spokesperson for the state oversight agency, which conducts inspections and investigates complaints for homes across the state, declined to comment on what may have been the fundamental problems at the Pavilion, but Berkowitz said that it comes down to management. Upon taking over, employees were given a chance to prove themselves and most of the staffing changes were made within the first three months of his tenure. It's unlikely that those staff members were unaware of the state and federal regulations that govern their jobs, said Berkowitz, but rather, no one within the facility was checking up on them.
"Most important is the oversight," Berkowitz said. "Like any business, if there's not that oversight, [change] can't happen."
Berkowitz, 30, has been in the nursing business as an administrator for six years. He's young, doesn't wear a tie to work and usually rolls up the sleeves on his button-down shirts.
He's there everyday, he says, and is a hands-on administrator. He is determined to build better relationships not only with the patients and their families, but with staff, too.
Kelly Anhalt was brought in as the new director of admissions and has worked with Berkowitz at other facilities. There are holiday parties, social outings and raffles for employees, she said. All of these things help workers buy into the job, said Anhalt, which translates into a better environment for everyone.
Part of Anhalt's focus in the admissions department has been to steer the facility toward accepting more short-term patients in need of rehabilitation. With 232 beds, only five of which aren't eligible for Medicaid and Medicare funding, Berkshire is operating at about 60 percent of its capacity. But by specializing in helping surgery patients and others discharged from area hospitals return to their own homes, Anhalt said Berkshire is turning over its beds quickly and building a reputation for getting people back on their feet.
"We're not affiliated with the old company," Anhalt said. "That's not who we are."
But Berkshire's own past isn't squeaky clean, either. Berkowitz's business partner, Meystel, was the top administrator at Emerald Park Healthcare in 2005 when Attorney General Lisa Madigan sued to shutter the facility in an almost unprecedented move. Between 1997 and Madigan's 2005 suit, the facility had racked up 168 federal health care violations, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times, and employed a number of convicted sex offenders.
According to Meystel, the circumstances at the former Evergreen Park nursing home were beyond his control and his tenure as the administrator was for only 15 months. The facility's owners had no interest in funding the necessary changes, said Meystel.
"A building doesn't go from A to Z in 15 months," he said.
The state's Department of Public Health confirmed that Meystel "is not restricted by IDPH with respect to his involvement in nursing homes," nor does he have any restrictions on his administrator's license.
As for his role at the Berkshire facility, both Meystel and Berkowitz said he is an investor and does not oversee the day-to-day operations. State records show that Meystel currently has at least a 40 percent ownership interest in four other Illinois nursing homes.
"I don't think there is any concern with my history with the state," Meystel said. "The situation I walked into [at Emerald Park Healthcare] was already a done deal."

SUPER TUESDAY: Satmar vs. Satmar

By Eli Rosenblatt
Tue. Feb 05, 2008

The split between the two heirs to the Satmar Hasidic dynasty spilled over into the political arena this week.

According to Yiddish-language listservs and blogs hosted in Israel, there is a an Internet campaign underway to urge Satmar residents in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to vote for Hillary Clinton, while at the same time urging residents to physically cross off her delegate, Rabbi David Niederman, from their ballots. Allies of Niederman have countered, urging voters to support him.

Niederman is considered to be a follower of Zalman Teitelbaum, who splits the community’s allegiance with his brother, Aaron Teitelbaum.

Throughout the listserv posts, calls were made for visitors to promptly urge their spouses and children to vote, but to abstain from supporting Niederman. Few, if any, cogent arguments are provided and impenetrable financial statistics related to his community-organizing work abound.

After the 1999 split between the brothers, different community organizations became affiliated with feuding rabbinical leaderships. He is currently the director of the United Jewish Communities of Williamsburg, an umbrella organization that serves as a provider of social and housing services, as well as public health and community development services in the Williamsburg area.

“I don’t read the blogs and I am not aware that they exist.” Niederman remarked, when reached by the Forward. “Voting is going on in Williamsburg right now.”

Every day, mailboxes at observant Jewish homes receive letters requesting contributions for those needing help to marry off their children. Collectors also solicit for hachnosas kallah during Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv, as well as at simcha halls. These collections are generally for very poor families, often living in Israel, who have no choice but to ask for charity.

However, some collections (sometimes loans that are unlikely to be repaid) are taken up for people who arrange lavish affairs and provide luxurious gifts because of social convention. The rich who produce extravagant celebrations cause a great deal of envy and lead others to assume tremendous debts in efforts to mimic them.

Regarding the general election in November, a number of rabbis said they believed that many Jews would be switching parties to vote for Arizona Sen. John McCain.

“There has been a lot of pro-McCain sentiment,” said Rabbi William Berman of the Conservative Commack (L.I.) Jewish Center.

McCain is also getting a favorable rating in some pockets of the Upper West Side, according to Rabbi Allen Schwartz, spiritual leader of Congregation Ohab Zedek, an Orthodox shul.

“Most West Siders are registered Democrats and the trend I hear is that many are going to cross party lines in the general election,” he said. “Practically everyone I talked to today is a registered Democrat who is going to vote for McCain. ... I think the Jewish community should be open to switching parties.”

Rabbi Klein in Merrick, L.I., said that among his congregants “McCain is very much part of the political equation out here.”

And Rabbi Bruce Ginsberg of Congregation Sons of Israel, a traditional Conservative shul in Woodmere, L.I., said “My guess is that McCain will be looked at favorably by the Jewish people, given his strong approach on the Middle East and his backing for Israel. And the [Sen. Joseph] Lieberman endorsement will weigh heavily in the minds of Jewish voters.”

But there was little passion among the electorate in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, according to Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld of the Orthodox Young Israel there.

“It’s not that the congregants prefer Obama to [Clinton]. They don’t like either. I went to vote this morning and some people said they were wasting their time.

“I went for Hillary,” Rabbi Schonfeld said. “I don’t like her but at least we have Jewish access to her. Obama frightens me. I can’t put my finger on it. He’s a demagogue. Intuitively I worry about that. It’s not a racial issue. He frightens me because he is an unknown quantity, certainly as far as Israel is concerned.”

Barack Obama’s message of change has resonated with Yoel Fried, a yeshiva student in Lakewood, N.J. “I’d like some change in this country,” Fried told the Forward.

What should change? “How the rest of the world looks bad at America.”

When Fried’s choice drew a surprised look from a passing fellow student, Fried acknowledged that he was probably in the minority among his fellow ultra-Orthodox. “Religious people are mostly not Democratic, because of the moral issues — gay rights, etc.”

Yeshiva Torah Vodaath Melaveh Malkah

Hundreds of parents, friends, supporters and alumni gathered in the Ohr Hachaim Hall in Boro Park on Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Yisro, December 26, for an evening that paid tribute to several distinguished honorees and noted the continuing achievements of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath. The melaveh malkah was an outpouring of hakaras ha’tov to the Yeshiva, not only by the honorees, but also by every participant who came to be part of this special event.

Rabbi Yonah Blumenfrucht served as chairman of the evening. The honorees included one of Torah Vodaath’s Roshei Yeshiva, Rabbi Yitzchok Meir Schorr, the oldest son of Rabbi Gedaliah Schorr, zt”l (1910-1979), reveredRosh Yeshiva Torah Vodaath.

YTV was established in September 1918 by a small group of dedicated observant immigrant parents in Brooklyn deeply concerned about Torah education for their children in their new host country. The United States was a true haven to the pioneering immigrants, offering every liberty and opportunity except that of Torah education. The parent group intensely desired that their sons have the same opportunity to mature in traditional Torah learning as their counterparts in their old European hometowns and shtetls. Twenty students comprised the opening class.

Ever since its establishment, the Yeshiva served the observant community as a role model for all yeshivas. Many of America’s Torah educators through the years, as well as in today’s Torah institutions, are proud products of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath.

Rabbi and Mrs. Nochum Gold were the Guests of Honor, and Rabbi Yitzchok Bald the Marbitz Torah awardee. Mr. and Mrs. Shea Neuman of Command Copy Center, dedicated parents in the Yeshiva’s elementary school, received Parents of the Year award.

A highlight of the evening was the guest speaker, Rabbi Dr. Hershel Fried, acclaimed educator, parent and grandparent in the Yeshiva. His presentation, “Turning Torah Learning into Torah Living,” focused on improving the middos of our children. He masterfully wove stories with Divrei Chazal on how parents have to be the role models to their children.

“Getting upset about a poor mark in Gemara is usual, getting upset about a poor mark in conduct is not. Why not? Derech Eretz Kadmah L’Torah! Why is it that when we find a child with admirable middos, he is usually from out of town?”

All who participated felt privileged to have been part of a special evening of chinuch and hakaras ha’tov. Tapes of the evening are available by calling the yeshiva office at 718-941-8000 x232.

Yeshiva Torah Vodaath – Recent Developments

With the sudden and sad passing of the legendary Rabbi Aharon Braun, zt”l (1926-2007), the position of executive director became vacant. At a special meeting of the Yeshiva’s board of directors, Rabbi Yitzchok Gottdiener was unanimously appointed to the position. Rabbi Gottdiener, a student of the Yeshiva since his early youth, is a musmach of Rav Pam. He joined the Yeshiva’s administrative staff in 1983 and served as comptroller and assistant administrator under Rabbi Braun for 25 years.

The entire observant community wishes Rabbi Gottdiener much success in his new position. In addition, Shimon Pepper has been appointed vice president of development, and Rabbi Moshe Shochet continues as director of development.

Yeshiva Torah Vodaath – Marine Park Branch

With the expansion of the observant community, especially younger families, into the Marine Park section of Brooklyn, the Yeshiva has established a new Flatbush division of its elementary school at Quentin Road and East 31st Street. As the cost of housing has risen dramatically during the past few years, Marine Park has become a somewhat reasonable and attractive alternative for young families seeking to purchase their first home.

Yeshiva Torah Vodaath – Lakewood Branch

A recent unofficial and unscientific survey of marriages of current and former students of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath (specifically, the last 10) revealed a trend of almost 80 percent moving to Lakewood’s growing Torah community. A beis medrash in Lakewood has been suggested and is being considered, possibly, as the home of the Lakewood branch of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath’s kollel.

The present roshei yeshiva would alternatively travel to Lakewood and give shiurim on a rotational basis. This would be a major and welcome contribution of Torah scholarship to Lakewood’s growing Torah community.

Thank you, I appreciate the thought, but that's AHAVAH B.

But I'm all for another comment that was posted - when do we get to skewer Tropper? I can't wait to see what UOJ digs up on him.

According to Rabbi Yudel Shain, the Star-K in China is even worse than the OU.

The big problem these days is that all DOMESTIC products, kosher or not, are increasingly made with ingredients sourced in China.

The RCA beis din has been hearing evidence against an RCA member rabbi. "

This is actually not an uncommon occurrance. These characters usually resign before the RCA comes to a verdict to prevent the story from getting out. Mordechai Tendler was the only numbskull that fought to the finish, forcing the RCA to publicize all the shmutz.

"There are arrests every day for embezzlement and other scams. Do these losers actually think they can get away with it?"

Those with no morals and no conscience often do get away with it. Take for example a putz in Queens who stole $10 million. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison but will get out at 19 months for good behavior. He's already back home but returns every night at 10 pm to sleep in a halfway house.

He made sure the money disappeared so that the govt can't confiscate it, BUT:

- His home is worth $2.5 million

- Luxury cars are parked in the driveway

- 5 kids in yeshivos at 100k per year in tuition

People who do not use the Torah as their guide will take this "deal" in a heartbeat.

Rabbi Belsky, Shlita is the father of "HETEIRIM" at the OU. They need him for a few issues:
1- Heteirim
2- Kasher the OU for Yeshiva Leit.
That is worth everything to the OU.

I wonder what he's getting paid for those important....even though he's there only 1 day a week.

I think Torah Vodaas should be ashamed of themselves, not the OU.

When the facts are in your favor but the law isn't,harp on the facts.

When neither are in your favor, confuse them with BS.

Amir Mizroch , THE JERUSALEM POST Feb. 8, 2008

Sheldon Cohen was sitting in his car outside a Johannesburg sports stadium last week waiting for his son Noah to finish soccer practice.

Sheldon, 47, was talking to his father, Jack, on his cellphone when three young men ran past and shot him in the neck. Jack, realizing something terrible had happened, sped to the stadium.

The killers, who had moments before tried unsuccessfully to snatch a cellular phone from a woman parked nearby who was also waiting for her son, had seen Sheldon on the phone and thought he was calling the police. So they killed him. Jack arrived shortly after to see his son's body slumped in his car, with grandson Noah standing watch.

A week earlier, a Jewish man walking to synagogue in Johannesburg was stopped by several men in a passing car. One man got out of the car and demanded that the Jewish man hand over his tallit bag, thinking it contained valuables. The Jew refused, and was shot to death. Searching through his victim's bag, the attacker found nothing of value to himself and left it on the sidewalk.

According to South African press reports, police recorded 126,000 armed robberies in the 2006-2007 fiscal year. Exactly a decade ago, that figure stood at 70,000. While Johannesburg's Jews have been affected by the country's rampant violent crime no more or no less than the rest of the population, these two recent killings have plunged the Jews of Johannesburg into despair. Increasingly, many in the community are weighing their love for the country against their fear for their families' safety - and are often coming down in favor of the latter.

Living behind increasingly tall, barbed-wired walls (more and more Johannesburg Jews are residing in secure compounds), and having to be escorted into and out of their residences by private, armed security companies, members of the community, especially the young, are looking at options abroad.

Some look to Israel, which has a strong and vibrant expatriate community in centers such as Ra'anana, Modi'in and Beit Shemesh. In a first for the Jewish Agency, it is bringing a full planeload of South African olim in July.

Others look to Australia, the United States or Canada. According to the agency, of the Jews who leave Johannesburg, about a third go to Australia, and two-thirds to Israel and other places.

Ofer Dahan, the Jewish Agency's emissary in South Africa, says there has been a dramatic increase in applications for aliya over the past two months.

Dahan says there is a 100-percent increase in interest in aliya from last year, and a 300% increase in those opening aliya files over the past two months. In 2007, 240 South African Jews and former Israelis made aliya, an increase from 143 in 2006 and 98 in 2005. Dahan says his staff are working round the clock, and have even had to hire outside staff to help cope with the demand.

Most of those looking to move to Israel are young singles and young families with one or two children. Dahan says there has been a 10% drop in registration at the two Johannesburg King David schools this year - an indication, he says, of a quickening pace of emigration.

The increasing signs of a possible Jewish exodus have even led to an attempt by Sydney's Jewish community to help Jews move to Australia - an initiative unceremoniously rejected by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.

The Jewish population of South Africa has dropped from about 120,000 in 1970 to an estimated 75,000 today. In the 1980s some South African Jews left because they couldn't live under apartheid. Just before apartheid ended, in the early '90s, more Jews left due to uncertainty over the country's immediate future.

Now, some are leaving and many more are thinking about leaving because of a combination of factors, including crime, corruption, non-supply of services and the weak currency, the rand, which is back to being one of the world's worst-performing currencies in 2008.

Adding to the sense of dismay are the country's persistent electricity outages which are affecting every corner of South Africa, resulting in up to three hours per day of power stoppages in many areas. The government simply cannot supply the country's electricity needs - even though it is, outrageously according to some, selling electricity to neighboring states.

While Jews throughout the rest of the country are affected by the power outages, it is really only those living in the greater Johannesburg area that are affected by frequent violent crime. Most of South Africa's Jews, between 50,000 to 60,000, live in the greater Johannesburg area, while between 12,000-15,000 thousand live in the greater Cape Town area.

On top of the violent crime and electricity crises, there is a growing sense of government corruption and ineptitude, with the return of Jacob Zuma to the helm of the ruling ANC party after a rape trial and the demise of police chief Jackie Selebi on charges of corruption and obstruction of justice.

One of Johannesburg's important rabbis, serving in one of the city's major synagogues, was recently asked by a congregant whether Johannesburg's Jews should stay or seek out a better, safer life elsewhere. The rabbi answered that he could not make that decision for any of the congregants and that each person would have to decide on their own.

While that answer was a neutral one, observers point out that the rabbi didn't tell the congregants to stay in Johannesburg, as followers of the Lubavitcher rebbe tell their congregants. (It is known that the rebbe said that Jews should stay in South Africa because the country would be stable and prosper).

While acknowledging the general sentiment of dismay, anger and creeping negativity about the country and its future among the Jewish population, Geoff Sifrin, editor of the South African Jewish Report, says there is still a lot going for the country, and that even if things sometimes feel like they're falling apart, "South Africa is definitely not falling apart."

Speaking to The Jerusalem Post by phone from his editorial offices in Johannesburg, Sifrin says the electricity outages have made putting out his weekly paper more of a challenge than usual, with his team frantically looking over final proofs and sending them to the printer before the electricity cuts out. The power crisis "says a lot about where this country is headed," Sifrin says. But electricity shortages and government ineptitude, no matter how frustrating, are things people can live with and work around. The feeling of a lack of personal safety is much harder to live with.

"Questions about staying or leaving are more prevalent in people's minds now, especially when there is a combination of negative events like the Sheldon Cohen killing and the power cuts," Sifrin says.

Sifrin points out that many of the successful companies having a positive effect on the South African economy were started by, and are run by, young Jewish businessmen, and that on the whole, the community is doing very well.

There is even talk that South Africa may lose its hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup if the country cannot get its crime problem down and increase its electricity production. For many, this scenario would signal that South Africa has not lived up to the promise it held after the fall of apartheid, and that it has, officially, taken a turn for the worse.

Tonight’s Panel Discussion – Head of UJC Mouthpiece Lauds UOJ!

Filed Under Jewlicious, UOJ, Jewcy, Jewschool |

I went to a lecture this evening called, “Jewish Identity Online: Blogging, Ethics, and Community,” at the Jewish Community Project, and quite frankly, it was really boring. Very little of interest was said. Lots of big ideas about community and ethics, and if it’s good for the Jewish community, but precious little specifics. Probably because except perhaps for Izzy, they didn’t seem to know (or admit they care) about any of the specifics.

Rabbi Hammerman, apparently the Federation Godol Hador, praised Jewsweek for creating the Chafetz Chayim admonishment against Loshen Hora, even though it was Dan Sieradski of Jewschool (at the time) who came up with that. Well, at least he tried to name one actual blog besides his own. Most panelists had trouble doing that. Hammerman is so middle brow…a theological Thomas Friedman for the tri-state area, He riffed on Friedman’s flat earth idea, noting that we all have a greater Jewish library at our disposal thanks to the internet than most of the greatest rabbis who ever lived, which doesn’t mean a lot, since most Jews can’t read it.

Anyway.

I asked them to name which blog (besides their own) they liked the most, and which one they liked the least, and why. But apparently, this question raised massive existential issues, and could not be tackled without first solving the mysteries of the universe. At some point, I think Rosner was expatiating on how infinity was not confined to time and space…or something along those lines…frankly, I nearly I passed out from sheer frustration.

So ck of Jewlicious asked them a very simple question – one that surely would get the panelists to name and discuss some real, actual Jewish blogs. “Name some blogs you would recommend people read.” Real simple.

“It seems like you are fishing,” said Izzy.

Yes, Izzy…ck was fishing. Fishing for someone to say something about the subject matter that was advertised for the panel discussion.

But finally, Gary Rosenblatt condescended to name an actual blog. He fingered the Unorthodox Jew (UOJ) as a blog he respected.

This was shocking. UOJ has felled numerous ultra-Orthodox institutions and ultra-Orthodox/haredi rabbis.

Rosenblatt said of UOJ’s accusations,

“Generally, the information has been accurate.”

UOJ got a nod from the head of the Federation mouthpiece…and that’s amazing.

Editorial - THE NEW YORK TIMES

‘An Intolerable Fraud’
Published: February 8, 2008

An envelope arrived in our office the other day. It had the bulky, tawdry look of junk mail: pink and lavender Easter eggs, a plastic address window and a photo of a young man in fatigue shorts using crutches to stand on his only leg. “Thousands of severely wounded troops are suffering,” it read. “Will you help them this Easter?”

"Not-for-profit corporations must come under... scrutiny by forcing public disclosure of their financial statements."

It was a plea for money from the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, one of the worst private charities — but hardly the only — that have been shamefully milking easy cash from the suffering and heartache caused by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The coalition and its sister organization, Help Hospitalized Veterans, were among a dozen military-related charities given a grade of F in a study last December by the American Institute of Philanthropy, a nonprofit watchdog group. These and other charities have collected hundreds of millions of dollars from kind-hearted Americans and squandered an unconscionable amount of it on overhead and expenses — 70 percent or 80 percent, or more. The usual administrative outlay for a reputable charity is about 30 percent. Money that donors surely assumed was going to ease the pain and speed the healing of injured soldiers went instead to junk-mail barrages, inflated executive salaries and other forms of corporate-style bloat.

It’s all legal. There is very little regulation in the charity game, and if someone like Roger Chapin, the “nonprofit entrepreneur” who founded the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes and Help Hospitalized Veterans, wants to mismanage your money, he has great leeway in doing so. His veterans’ charities raised more than $168 million from 2004 to 2006, but spent only a pittance — about 25 percent — to help veterans. The rest, nearly $125 million, went to fund-raising, administrative expenses, fat salaries and perks. Mr. Chapin gave himself and his wife $1.5 million in salary, bonuses and pension contributions over those three years, including more than $560,000 in 2006. The charities also reimbursed the Chapins more than $340,000 for meals, hotels, entertainment and other expenses, and paid for a $440,000 condominium and a $17,000 golf-club membership.

And what did the soldiers get? Try almost $18.8 million in “charitable” phone cards sent to troops overseas in 2006 — not to let them call their families, but rather to call up a stateside business that sells sports scores.

Representative Henry Waxman, Democrat of California, whose Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has held hearings on the issue and documented the above abuses, has rightly called the conduct of charities like Mr. Chapin’s “an intolerable fraud.”

Mr. Waxman deserves credit for exposing it, but Congress should follow through with stricter oversight and disclosure rules so Americans don’t have to rely on House committee hearings to know where their money is being misspent.

Meanwhile, if you happen to get a mailing from the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, by all means open it. Look the contents over — the glossy bunny greeting card, the earnest letter from the retired Brig. Gen. Chip Diehl — then shred or recycle it or both. And think of what Mr. Chapin told the House committee when asked what would happen if his charities ever told donors where their money went.

“If we disclose, which I’m more than happy to do,” he said, “we’d all be out of business. Nobody would donate. It would dry up.”

The husband had claimed his wife had never went to Beth Din with him but had instead gone to Goyyish court to take awy his kids and bank accounts. Only after she took everything from him in court which she was not entitled to in Jewish Law and would not have won in a Beit Din, she paid Belsky to extract a Get, which is according to my rabbi with whom I discussed this story this morning, absolutely invalid and possul. My rabbi added that the concept of the Rambam allowing a beth din to administer force to obtain a Get is only when both the husband and wife both agree to accept the rulling of a particular Beit Din. Only, then and only if the husband does not follow that Beit din rulling which he accepted to follow, may that Beit Din force the husband to abide and fulfill the Mizvah of abiding by the rulling he accepted to follow.

Hey UOJ, Your source is accurate. I wish to quote from your previous post dated September 9, 2006 in which there you mention the NEWSDAY article about the gangster thug Israel Belsky kidnapping and torturing a Jewish man from Boro Park. The date March 8, 1998 is exactly the same as the date you described above.

The following is what you wrote on September 9. 2006:

. . . . . . . . Without the support of any reputable Rav in America , Belsky directed his efforts toward Eretz Yisroel. To approach Rabbi Elyashev was out of the question. Some years back Belsky was caught lying to Rav Elyashev in another story regarding a forced invalid Get. In that story, Belsky falsely claimed that his kidnapping and mafia style torture of an innocent husband from Borough Park (story published in Newsday March 8, 1998, with Belsky's picture) was sanctioned by a former Rosh Yeshiva of 'Chaim Berlin' living in Far Rockaway. That Rosh Yeshiva upon learning that Belsky was falsely using his name, wrote a letter to Rav Elyashiv and to the "Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah" stating that "Rabbi" Belsky is a "liar" and should not be believed a single word that goes out from his mouth. In that case as well Belsky and his mafia group tried to permit a woman from Montreal to commit blatant adultery, Rachman Litzlon. All the Gedolei Torah vehemently protested against Belsky, and ruled that the woman is an Eshes Ish. Now again, Rav Elyashiv refused to accept "liar" Belsky. . . . . . .

Probable Rubashkin contamination that's being covered up by the OU & the manufacturer.

Most of you have seen the "Near East" brand of instant rice & couscous with flavorings on store shelves. Some of them are OU-Meat with real chicken. Even stores that have kicked out Rubashkin do not realize this product is most likely problematic.

Near East is manufactured by Great Grains Corp, a division of Quaker Oats, which itself is owned by PepsiCo.

I called the OU to find out whose chicken they use. The official OU response: It doesn't matter, because if we certify it, we are telling you it is good.

I called Quaker Oats customer service who gave me the runaround for weeks. They even suspected me of being a radical vegetarian who was trying to pressure them to stop using meat products. I finally spoke to the most senior customer service person at Quaker Oats headquarters in Chicago who argued it is a trade secret if they reveal Rubashkin as the source or not.

I know people at PepsiCo HQ in Westchester and asked if, in their estimation, the PepsiCo CEO would care. They didn't think so, unless that is if the company feels some kind of public backlash.

These are the only ways to contact them:

Almost 90% of teenagers aged 12-18 claim to have been victims of some level of sexual violence, according to a study conducted jointly by the University of Haifa and Ben Gurion University (Israel). The research surveyed 1,036 high school students. Additionally, 82% of the boys and 76% of the girls reported said that they had been subjects of violent physical assault.

Prof. Rachel Lev-Wiesel from the University of Haifa's School of Social Work, one of the authors of the study, noted that the results showed a distressing increase in the incidence of violence – both sexual and physical - over the past few years.

The number of criminal files opened by the police for assault against children rose from 6,370 in 1998 to 8,805 in 2005. According to the National Council for the Child, the number of children treated for suspected violent attacks or abuse in 2005 stood at more than 37,000, a rise of 120% over the past decade. Of the 37,000, 30.5% were reported physical violence, 9.9% sexual, 13% psychological and 36.8% varying degrees of neglect.

Prof. Lev-Wiesel stressed that the aim of the research was to examine the personal and social factors that help adolescents cope with the trauma of a violent assault. A questionnaire was completed anonymously by over 1,000 high school students. The questionnaire measured six variables: demography, physical and sexual assaults, PTSD, potency and social support from family and friends.

According to the researchers, there is a distinct correlation between a child's feeling of potency and the level of traumatic symptoms exhibited following a violent attack. The study found a distinctive difference in the personal resources and the level of psychological distress of the children who suffered violent attacks as opposed to those who did not – whether the violence was limited to one incident or continuing and whether the attack was considered minor or severe. Boys in the study reported a higher incidence of sexual and physical violence than girls.

"The results of the research show that a feeling of potency and support of family and friends are important resources which have the potential to reduce the resulting trauma following assault. In addition to the importance of developing programs to decrease the incidence of violence, these is a need for programs for empowerment and strengthening personal resources that will protect those who have already fallen victim to violence," summarized Prof. Lev-Wiesel.

The results of the study were presented at a conference, held on October 10, 2007, in cooperation with the University of Haifa, announcing the establishment of a non-profit organization founded by academics, professionals in the fields of social services and healthcare, lawmakers and the media to fight the rising incidence of violence and propose concrete solutions for aiding victims.

Newsday is a pornographic publication and Shaul is akin to someone hiding dirty magazines under his mattress.

What's Steven I. Weiss going to complain about now? UOJ is attacking Belsky with a newspaper article. You can't get more journalistic than that.

Anonymous said...

Did Belsky fill out his organ donor card?

I'll toss him into my hotdog production line when UOJ is finished with him.

in regards to what shaul wrote about Belski and his coerced gittin, just know that many rabbis are guilty of this because their palms have been greased.the following in order of importance are people known to aid in coerced gittin against halacha;Hershel Schlechter from y.U,Yehoshua ross from ORA,Kenneth aumann (rca),Basil herring (rca),Aryeh Ralbag,Mendel epstein, ephraim bryks, leibel landesman,Avrohom Union RCC-california,zev lewinson from monsey,ny.Do not get involve with these people or others from their institutions lest you fall victim to their lies and beware of their sly tongue.ונשמרתמ מאד לנפשתכמ

At least some of the rabbis mentioned by Solomon are scumbags but not all coerced gittin are illegimate.

MY COMMENTS TO SOLOMON ABOVE:

The above commenter Solomon who states that his list is in order of importance appears to be drunk in advance of Purim.

Firstly, he omitted Belsky in his dumb list. Secondly, no one on that list is important!!

Was Adolph Eichmann important? Of course not!!
So then Belsky too is not important.

Was Joseph Mengele important? Of course not!!
So then Mendel Epstein too is not important.

Are the Gay clubs and Homosexual dances sanctioned as Kosher by the faculty of Yeshiva University considered important? Of course not!!
So then Hershel Shlechter the daas New Testament that sanctions the fags of YU by his overt silence is not at all important.

Is Avrohom Mondrowitz considered important? Of course not!! So then Ephraim Bryks, Vice President of the Pedophile Club of Queens is surely not important either.

How about Moe, Larry and Curly of the Three Stooges, are they important? Well maybe they are, since they always made sad people laugh. However, a worthless piece of garbage like the dirty bastard Aryeh Ralbag, who serves only himself and seeks only to make himself laugh -all the way to the bank on the account and cheshbon of innocent others, with no qualms over destroying their lives and happiness with his falsified letters and other false documents as long as he gets paid lots of money to produce them, cannot possibly be considered important.

Is cow and donkey manure important? Surely yes. (Counts as one of the conditions to inherit Eretz Yisroel) When was the last time you heard of someone injured by cow manure? The remaining names, as well as all the names mentioned by the commenter Solomon above are not even worth a pound of cow manure. Yes, Union that means you too.

Keeping in mind that just as a person is credited by Heaven with fulfilling a particular Mitzvah when he causes others to actually perform that particular Mitzvah, so too is a person fully responsible for specific transgressions and sins committed by others when he personally is the cause of their violating those specific transgressions. (Of course, this rule does not exonerate the person who physically committed a sin under the direction of another person, while knowing that in truth the Torah forbade it.) This rule is sometimes referred to as “Lifnei Ivver Lo Setain Michshol”.

Accordingly, someone with even a minor degree of Jewish Torah knowledge and fear of Heaven, who is concerned of himself not to have illicit relations and violate the Torah’s laws of adultery, would not allow and promote others to be involved with Issur Eishes Ish - crime of adultery.

Therefore, when I see the opposite, and find low-lives of the types mentioned by Solomon the commenter above individually and collectively promoting hardcore znus, absent any fear of Heaven, it proves clearly that these individuals for themselves too have no problem with transgressing such cardinal sins. Women and children should stay away from these perverts. Their not any better than Ephraim Bryks and Mondrowitz.

Bottom line is, between all the molesters, pedophiles and fag promoters listed by Solomon, there should be no surprise that every one of these degenerates, most of whom call themselves by the title of rabbi (except for the son-in-law of the famous nationally known former Skokie dentist Howard Lichtenstein) all sponsor and endorse adultery and the birth of mamzeirim (“bastards” if you need a translation). Only to a fool are these lowlives considered important.

The way I understand it, R' Hershel Schechter is only in charge of Kollel Elyon / RIETS and has no control over the larger YU.

It's Norman Lamm and company who are to blame for the faig activity and other atrocities.

Yes, my bastard husband Aryeh the pimp wont give me a Get!! Rabbi Bryks tried to make Shalom Bais with me, but I kicked him where it hurts. I know cause I kicked Arye there many times.

All help will be dearly appreciated.

I must of left out alot of names! oy vey! but seriously speaking its sad that we live in a world where either you have degenerate/corrupt rabbis,or you have rabbis who wont stand up for the truth and oppose these reshaim lest they be attacked. thank G-d for internet and freedom of expression!

I received an call from one of those automated telemaketing machines from the Agudah of Maryland reminding me to go to the Ohel/Vaad "Keeping our kids safe" lecture.

What gives?

Apparently Shafran & Co. have set up an office on Hooks Lane.

You ought to know! When Martin Wolmark aka Mordechai Gimpel Wolmark pulls the wool over your eyes, it's probably just polyester.

The liar, sex molester and child pedophile Mordechai Gimpel Wolmark was never a former Rav of Bais Knesses Hagra in Detroit as he falsely claims to have been. I received an e-mail from Detroit that the pedophile Wolmark was never the rabbi at that shul. He is an all out fraud. Like Mondrowitz was not a psychologist, Wolmark was not the rabbi of Bais Knesses Hagra.

The stationary Wolmark uses says on it "Bais Knesses Hagra", but not that he was the rabbi there. This is a ploy by Wolmark to gain the trust of naive women who think because he's a rabbi they can discuss their intimate bedroom life with him. Besides that this turn him on, it's his way of getting his hands on them and to take them under his power. Th epublic must be aware that Mordechai Wolmark is a sick sex pervert like Ephraim Bryks, Avrohom Mondrowitz and Yisroel Belsky.

The parent body at the Yeshiva Shaarai Torah have as of lately been informed as to what kind of low-life sex pervert Wolmark is. Since then the school has lost about 70% of its enrollment. To make the building appear full, Wolmark is renting space to another institution.

What has to be done to save the Monsey community is to have Wolmark arrested or thrown out of Monsey forever. He cannot be permitted around children or women. I feel very bad for his wife who is the biggest victim of this cursed animal.

It has come to our attention that Ner Israel Rabbinical College administration may be plotting an action "Purimfest-5768". This March, Baltimore Jewish community members who have spoken against NIRC and its gay-shielding policies may receive poisoned Purim food packages (shalachmanot). If you receive a Purim gift from an unidentified source or from someone at NIRC, DO NOT EAT IT! If you develop any symptoms of poisoning within the first two weeks after Purim, immediately contact your local Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222).

Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva & their Kashrus Agency aka KCL are kashering Rabbi Belsky in Rabbi Gissinger's Shul in Lakewood.

I am not from Monsey but
I heard from my cousin who lives there that Mordechai Wolmark was the reason why Mrs. C. Pearl of Visnitz left Shaarai Torah and why Mrs. Ostreicher was forced to take a Get from her husband. Shame on the two legged pig and pervert noef named Mordechai Wolmark.
