Standing On The Shoulders Of A Giant!

Among Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz's ztvk"l last wishes, was that his son in-law, Rabbi Alexander Linchner, go to Israel and "rateve der Sefardishe kinder" - save the Sephardic children! This, from a humble Jew from Europe, whose sheer breadth of human compassion was beyond imagination, and concern for the well being of children was a paramount concern to him. Even as he lay on his deathbed.

He was the human Hubble telescope - he saw universes and galaxies beyond what anyone else was able to see or fathom.

Yes, the children were his primary concern -- because it is they that would carry the Jewish people forward until the coming of Moshiach. A well-educated, emotionally healthy child, imbued with the appropriate set of values, Torah values, would keep Yiddishkeit's light burning throughout the planet! The torch or "shraga" would light Torah fires in every nook and cranny on the planet Earth.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein said about RSFM -- "every single student in a yeshiva in America, now and forever, is a talmid of RSFM"! He loved Jews and Judaism with a passion unmatched in recent history. He fought off his detractors - the naysayers that scoffed at him and his concept of the new American Jew. He could care less what the masses thought about his concept of Torah (Im Derech Eretz) education in America. He battled the kannoim - the crazies. He declared war against self-inflicted poverty of the mind. Many of his dearest talmidim were encouraged to seek a parnassa outside the walls of the yeshiva. He battled Rabbi Aron Kotler on "high school" education in yeshivas. It is not for naught dear Zeide. The American Yid will survive, although this generation has lost its way.

"Your children" were trampled on, your values were spat upon, your way of dress has been soiled by gangsters, your pure Yiddish language has been twisted into vulgarities, your yeshiva kinderlach were sexually and emotionally raped by animals posing as rabbis, your battle for the sanctity of kashrus has been turned into a -- big illicit profit crooked gesheft, your Bais Yaakov girls were violated by beasts posing as rabbis, teachers and principals.

There is still a fire in a few Jews that will never give up, never! We will battle your battle until our last breath, as you did! We will turn the world upside down -- until your values return to the nation of Israel.

Your values will return to the Jewish people, I promise! Beseech God on behalf of your kinderlach dear Zeide - we need your intervention with the Ribbono Shel Olam -- we must prevail, we must not fail!

Rabbis think they are beyond reproach.
They think they can get away with murder.
They think kidnapping (Commandment #8)is no big deal.
They think that turning themselves into idols makes Judaism more authentic.
They think causing mayhem in the lives of their constituents is what Judaism is about.
They don't believe they ever must apologize.
They are empty suits.

An article in the Jerusalem Post (www.jpost.com) talks about 'spiritual abuse' by some orthodox husbands, wherein abusive personalities demean the spiritual efforts of their wives as worthless. Who among us has not been taught to be holier than thou, and to be judgemental of others who are not on our high madreiga? How do we on the one hand maintain some standards yet on the other hand refrain from judging others so harshly?

Just go to a discussion on V.I.N. (www.vosizneias.com) about what a Five Towns mohel proposed for his standards of milah--all of which are efforts to raise the sterility level of the procedure. See the demeaning comments and personal attacks. Is this how we talk about halachic and safety issues?

Bond Advice Leaves Pain in Its Wake

By MARY WILLIAMS WALSH

David Rubin built a big business over two decades crisscrossing the country to show local governments how to raise more money.

But a close look reveals that his consulting firm, CDR Financial Products of Beverly Hills, Calif., left pain in its wake from Florida to New Mexico. The Internal Revenue Service has cracked down on dozens of communities, which have been saddled with unfinished public projects, financial losses and more debt than they can manage.

Though consultants like CDR and Mr. Rubin turn up again and again in places where bond deals have turned sour, they are virtually unregulated. The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board is now appealing to Congress to expand its authority to cover consultants and other advisers in the municipal bond business as well as bankers and brokers.

Christopher Taylor, who retired as director of the rules board in 2007, says even harsher action is needed. Common industry practices have led governments to refinance their debts more often than necessary and take on excessive risk, he says, adding that some practices should be banned outright.

CDR, for its part, says that while its advice to its clients has been creative and inventive, it has always taken care to follow the rules, and a spokesman said a vast majority of the transactions in which the firm took part had raised no legal concerns.

For years, Mr. Rubin and his consulting associates have helped put local officials in touch with bankers and traders who can add sophisticated features to the bonds that states and cities issue to pay for public works. The banks would charge fees, officials were told, but the special features would more than make up for those costs.

In some places, Mr. Rubin’s firm also contributed to political campaign funds. In New Mexico, federal authorities are investigating whether CDR made improper payments to Gov. Bill Richardson’s campaigns in exchange for work on a $1.6 billion transportation bond issue, a disclosure that caused Mr. Richardson to withdraw from consideration to join the Obama administration.

The Securities and Exchange Commission tried to impose sanctions on CDR, to little effect. After the Gulf Breeze debacle, it issued a cease-and-desist order. But CDR reports a spotless disciplinary history in its S.E.C. registration. Its offices were raided by the F.B.I. in 2006, though the government has not disclosed what it found.

By the time of the raid, a new type of deal had come into vogue: municipal bonds linked to swaps. These deals posed much greater risks than the real estate bonds and were more profitable for dealers.

In Philadelphia, CDR became the city’s “swap adviser” after Mr. Rubin contributed tens of thousands of dollars to officials. The Philadelphia city treasurer, Corey Kemp, was indicted in 2004 on charges of receiving gifts and favors from companies vying for city business — including CDR.

Mr. Kemp went to prison; CDR was not charged with wrongdoing. The firm remained Philadelphia’s swap adviser for three more years.

It went on to help the city-owned gas utility with a swap, earning $225,000. The swap protected against interest rate increases while allowing the utility to issue variable-rate bonds, which are less expensive.

But the deal foundered during last year’s market turmoil. JPMorgan Chase took over the bonds, shortening their life to five years, from 25. Now Philadelphia has to come up with $60 million a year and pay about $45 million to get out of the swap contract.

Low on cash, the city utility has raised its customers’ heating bills this winter.

Mr. Ripp said CDR had played a narrow role. “To point the finger at CDR — and suggest that they’re culpable in creating a transaction that benefited no one — is misguided,” he said.

Rob Dubow, Philadelphia’s finance director, said he could not explain why the city kept working with CDR after the corruption trial. “Clearly,” he said, “it has not turned out well for us.”

UOJ:

Now that people are starting to contemplate the enefits of "Judaism Classic" vs. "New Judaism" of bans, kol korehs, and chumras, it's time for a blast from the past.

What would your zeideh have said to the following:

1] Corrupt Dayanus: If a bais din is muchzak shakran, it's known they accept bribes?

2] Rabbonim who are mevayesh people, and it turns out the information they acted upon was a lie. Does a rav have to apologize, or is it bizui haTorah?

3] A person makes himself a menace to society?

4] Vos meint Daas Torah?

It seems as though the only way forward, is to look at our past.

Please tell us what would have been, so we are more knowledgeable consumers.

Thanks!

In no way, shape, or form is mesorah being perpetuated through Torah U'mesorah. The organization founded by Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz zt"l, to keep the flame of Torah alive. Every child in those days was more valuable than silver and gold. Regardless of the level of knowledge, parental religious observance level, or financial abilities, EVERY child was given a spot in a REGULAR classroom. Would a REAL rosh yeshiva like Rav Gifter zt"l refused a spot to a boy with a television at home?

The rebbeim back then knew each child needed to grow under their tutelage. They weren't given the option to say the child needs special help. With true Ahavas Yisroel they were able to reach MOST of their talmidim. They instilled pride of being an ehrliche Yid into each student. Even if they didn't become rabbonim, they were ehliche baalei batim. Now yeshivas push the new mesorah of kollel at all cost, and encourage ways to beat the system. Is there any wonder why there are so many frum financial scandals?

Rebbeim looked at teaching as a cause to live for, not a quick fix for yaider shoitah to try to make money off of. Can anyone compare nowaday rebbeim with the likes of Rabbi Joshua Silbermintz or Rabbi Hershel Mashinsky?

Who had the mesorah? Us or them?

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The three Atlantic City casinos once run by Donald Trump filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday — for the third time.

Trump Entertainment Resorts made the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Camden, N.J., four days after the real estate mogul whose name remains on the company and its three seaside gambling resorts resigned as chairman of its board.

Trump was frustrated that bond holders and their allies on the board rebuffed his offer to buy the company and take it private.

"Other than the fact that it has my name on it — which I'm not thrilled about — I have nothing to do with the company," Trump told The Associated Press Tuesday.

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. said it needs as much as $16.6 billion in new U.S. loans, more than doubling the aid to date, and must get some of the cash next month to survive. GM plans 47,000 more job cuts worldwide this year.

Chrysler LLC, propped up like GM with federal assistance, said it’s seeking $5 billion more from the government and will shed 3,000 more positions.

The automakers met a deadline today to report progress in revamping operations with $17.4 billion in loans granted so far, and now they must show the U.S. by March 31 that they can become profitable and be allowed to keep the money. Along with Ford Motor Co., they got a boost when the United Auto Workers said it reached tentative agreements to help trim labor expenses.

A request for more aid “was inevitable,” said Jim Hossack, an analyst at consulting firm AutoPacific Inc. in Tustin, California. “It’s because sales in January were less than anyone expected.”

GM’s retrenchment includes closing 5 more U.S. plants by 2012; selling or shutting down the Hummer unit by the end of next month; and chopping salaries by as much an additional 30 percent for the four-most senior officers after Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner, who already is working for $1 a year.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say an upstate New York television executive who sought to improve the image of Muslims in the media beheaded his wife after she filed for divorce.

Muzzammil Hassan (moo-ZAHM'-mel HAH'-sahn) is charged with murdering his wife, Aasiya (AH'-see-ya) Hassan. Police say she had an order of protection against her husband and he had been kicked out of the house they shared in Orchard Park, near Buffalo.

They accuse the 44-year-old Hassan of cutting off his wife's head at the TV station where he launched his Bridges TV network in 2004. In an AP interview, he said he hoped the network would balance negative portrayals of Muslims following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The co-CEOs and two other executives at BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ:RIMM) have been charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission with tampering with stock options to enrich themselves and other workers.

The charges, filed Tuesday by the SEC in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and announced with a simultaneous settlement of the case, allege that the executives pulled down millions of dollars in compensation that wasn't properly disclosed to investors.

The practice, known as "backdating," has been investigated at hundreds of companies. It involves tweaking the paperwork so option awards look like they were issued earlier than they actually were, usually on a date when the stock was trading lower. That makes it cheaper for the recipient to cash out the options, and boosts the potential windfall.

Together, the executives have agreed to pay more than $1.4 million in fines and give back more than $800,000 in profits to settle the SEC's case, the SEC and RIM said Tuesday. The executives had already paid back the profits to RIM.

The charges come two weeks after Ontario's Securities Commission reached its own settlement with Waterloo, Ontario-based Research in Motion. The Canadian case calls for the executives to pay $62 million in fines and in restitution to the company.

The defendants named in the latest case are: RIM's co-CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis; Chief Operating Officer Dennis Kavelman, who served as RIM's chief financial officer until stepping down in March 2007 after RIM's internal review uncovered problems with the options practices; and Angelo Loberto, the former vice president of finance who also left that job after RIM's internal review. Loberto has stayed at the company as vice president of corporate operations.

RIM shares fell $3.87, or 8 percent, to close at $44.64

Finally,

You are finally bringing the discussion full circle by becoming more personal as you discuss your grandfather's yiddishkeit and how we have strayed. Beautifully written. Truly moving. And then you allude to the comeback that is brewing. The UOJ revolution. It has begun and is growing stronger.

When the statutes of limitations laws are changed as they must be eventually, one yeshiva after another will be sued for millions, just like by the Catholic Church. We will then be forced to start over with new yeshivas. Why not go back to the old fashioned way of actually caring for kids? It can and will happen. I mean, how long could such craziness go on. We Jews can be crazy but their is a limit.

Maybe mashiach really is not far off.

A provision in President Obama’s stimulus package, extending food stamp benefits for able-bodied adults, has revived a dispute in New York City between Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and advocates for the poor.

The provision overturns a 1996 rule limiting able-bodied adults who have no dependents to three months of food stamps in a three-year period. But the Bloomberg administration said on Tuesday that nothing had changed and that it was not obligated to extend benefits to anyone not enrolled in the Work Experience Program, a workfare program that provides temporary jobs, usually in city agencies.

Robert Doar, commissioner of the city’s Human Resources Administration, which oversees food stamps and workfare, said the city was ready to expand the Work Experience Program rather than allow people to collect food stamps without working or looking for work.

Mr. Bloomberg said he had quashed the city’s waiver application because he was “a believer that people should have to work for a living.”

New York Must Prepare for Global Warming, Mayor’s Panel Says

By MIREYA NAVARRO

New York City must prepare for higher temperatures, more rain and an increased risk of coastal flooding in the coming decades as a result of global climate change, an advisory panel said on Tuesday.

The panel, formed by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg to study the potential effects of global warming on the city, said that mean annual temperatures in New York could increase by up to 3 degrees and the average sea levels rise by 2 to 5 inches by the 2020s. By the 2080s, temperatures could increase by up to 7 ½ degrees, and sea levels could rise 12 to 23 inches by the end of the century, the panel said.

Cynthia Rosenzweig, a senior research scientist at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University, who is the chairwoman of the panel, acknowledged that it was difficult to make predictions about the effects of climate change on specific regions and that climate models that attempt to do so carried uncertainties.

But Dr. Rosenzweig said that the main value of the panel’s research, which used climate models and local climate data, was to identify risks in order to make the city less vulnerable to them.

Manhunt: Accused Financier Scammer Stanford Missing

Authorities say Investor Losses Could Rival Madoff Scandal

By BRIAN ROSS, JOSEPH RHEE, and JUSTIN ROOD

February 18, 2009

Texas financier R. Allen Stanford is accused of cheating 50,000 customers out of $8 billion dollars but despite raids Tuesday of his financial empire in Houston, Memphis, and Tupelo, Miss., federal authorities say they do not know the current whereabouts of the CEO.

The SEC alleges financier Robert Allen Stanford is running a Madoff-like scheme.

The Securities Exchange Commission alleges Stanford ran a fraud promising investors impossible returns, much like Bernard Madoff's $50 billion alleged Ponzi scheme.

Investigators Tuesday shut down and froze the assets of three of the companies Stanford controls and they say the case could grow to be as big as the Madoff scandal. Like Madoff's clients, Stanford's investors are in shock.

Once again, this could be another case of the SEC asleep at the switch. Allegations of fraud and possible drug money laundering have been made against Stanford in the past ten years, but the SEC took action only after two former employees filed a lawsuit in civil court.

The passuk in this week’s parsha warns, “Lo sikach shochad” Don’t take a bribe. Why not? “Ki hashochad ya’aver einei chachamim” Bribes blind the eyes of the wise scholars, and “V’yisalef divrei tzaddikim” it switches the words of the righteous. Bribery of ALL types cause otherwise wise scholars to make decisions they come to regret, and be ashamed of. The Torah doesn’t specify what the bribe needs to be. The Talmud has examples of rabbis who removed themselves from dinei Torah for receiving meals from an individual who eventually became a litigant.

In our generation every shteeble rav considers themslves daas Torah, and expect kavod , handouts, and more. Most don’t know how to pasken basic halachos of shabbos and kashrus. Their shteeble and new fake kashrus organization are the only business knowledge they possess, yet they think they can pasken Choshen Mishpat shailos on a bais din. They can hardly get along with the baalei batim in their shuls, yet they think they have the psychological knowledge to play detective in molestation issues.

These know nothings are pliable by every abuser and enabler to “pasken” on their side. These Gumbies will sell out for a few dollars, for a chance to be connected to Agudah, or for threats made against them. You see, most of these spineless cowards have legal issues to hide, and hope nobody finds out.

As a result Tzedek Tzedek Tirdof! We are all expected to PURSUE justice.

And we will overcome.

The true test of whether a person is sufficiently devoted to the word of Hashem and possesses the proper degree of fidelity to Torah is by the way the person acts regarding the laws taught in Parshas Mishpatim. The way a person conducts himself in business dealings with other people demonstrates his true level of religiosity. One who cheats, steals and lies in the course of his financial dealings has shown that he is not really a believer and thinks that he must bend the law in order to earn the money Hashem sends him.

One who is dishonest and defrauds people is in essence denying the laws of the Torah which clearly define how we must conduct ourselves. He thinks he will get away with it and rejects the punishments the Torah prescribes for those who harm others.

Thus, the test to determine whether a person is worthy of the Keser Torah of naaseh venishmah is the way he conducts himself relative to the halachos of Parshas Mishpatim. Therefore, the narrative pertaining to the Jew’s response of naaseh venishmah is in Parshas Mishpatim and not in Parshas Yisro. Observance of the Aseres Hadibros is not yet an indication that the person is a naaseh venishmah Yid. Adherence to the laws of Mishpatim is.

Let us all search our hearts and wallets and ensure that we are as scrupulous in dealing honestly in financial laws as we are punctilious in our observance of Shabbos and the other cardinal laws. We will thus ensure that we are worthy of the brachos reserved for those who cling to the Torah with sincerity, and merit as much nachas as Yisro.

Chimp-Stimulus Cartoon Raises Racism Concerns

By Sewell Chan
Updated, 12:49 p.m. |

Gov. David A. Paterson, the Rev. Al Sharpton and others expressed concern on Wednesday morning over an editorial cartoon in The New York Post that showed a police officer, having shot a chimpanzee, saying to his colleague, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

Critics said the cartoon implicitly compared President Obama with the primate and evoked a history of racist imagery of blacks.

Speaking at a conference of the New York Academy of Medicine on Wednesday morning, Gov. David A. Paterson said that while he had not seen the cartoon, he believed the Post should explain it. Given the possibility that some people could conclude the cartoon had a racial context, Mr. Paterson said the newspaper needed to clarify its meaning.

“It would be very important for The New York Post to explain what the cartoon was intended to portray,” Mr. Paterson said in response to a question about whether the cartoon’s depiction of a monkey was racist, as Mr. Sharpton has suggested. “Obviously those types of associations have been made. They do feed a kind of negative and stereotypical way that people think. But I think if it’s enough that people are raising this issue, I hope they would clarify.”

Mr. Sharpton, who has been an unflattering subject of work by the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, in the past, said in a statement on his Web site:

The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual inference to this form of racism when, in the cartoon, the police say after shooting a chimpanzee, “now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder whether the Post cartoonist was inferring that a monkey wrote it?

In a statement, Col Allan, editor-in-chief of The Post, denied Mr. Sharpton’s assertion that the cartoon was “racially charged.” Mr. Allan said:

The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.

The chimpanzee in the cartoon was a reference to the 200-pound pet chimpanzee that was shot dead by a police officer in Stamford, Conn., on Monday evening, after it mauled a friend of his owner.

Haile Rivera, a field organizer for the Obama campaign last year, said in an e-mail message to reporters: “The Post should not print anymore of Delonas’s cartoons in their paper. This is an insult to our president and the American people.”

A 2001 cartoon by Mr. Delonas depicted Fernando Ferrer, the Bronx borough president who was seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor that year, kissing the buttocks of Mr. Sharpton — a depiction that was widely criticized as racist.

In a phone interview, Mr. Sharpton said he planned to hold a protest outside The Post’s headquarters at noon on Thursday.

“What does shooting a chimpanzee have to do with a stimulus bill?” Mr. Sharpton said. “This raises all the racial stereotypes we are trying to get away from this in this country.”

He added: “I’m not speaking on behalf of the president or the chimpanzee. I‘m speaking on behalf of the offended African-American community.”

Mr. Delonas has drawn ire from a number of groups for past cartoons in The Post. In 2006, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation denounced a cartoon of his that showed a man carrying a sheep wearing a bridal veil to a “New Jersey Marriage Licenses” window, a reference to the State Supreme Court’s ruling that year requiring the state to grant same-sex couples the same legal rights and benefits as heterosexual couples through civil unions.

Delonas cartoon in todays NY Post is right on. Let Al (Diamond Merchants) sharpi-sharpton and the Guv (Motel 96th Broadway- I can see good enough to get there) Patterson picket all they want.

BTW; did these scum low lives say boo when The Bim-Bam turned around Sarah Palin's "Lipstick on A Pit-Bull" with "Lipstick on a Pig is still a Pig". Where were these hypocrites then?

Deafening silence. Predictable.

Welcome to "The Fairness Doctrine".
We don't like it, then you can't say it.

If you look back over the past campaign, you will see that the "lipstick on a pig..." was first used by Sen McCain. I believe this was quite early in the campaign

Torah Vodaas borrowing $3 million at 6% interest for operating expenses.

Does this portend anything? And now that Belsky squandered $200k of 5 Towns fundraising for acting like a bastard, can the yeshiva make the payments?

YTV is in nasty financial trouble -- more than half the board wants Belsky out --- and are unable to raise funds because of Belsky. Time for Leshkowitz to get rid of him...Long past due!

Eitan Feiner should be ashamed of himself. He was warned years ago about Weinberger being a danger at Rebbitzen Feiner's seminary. But he was more interested in getting himself on the speaker roster at the Agudah fresser convention.

When YTV would go to Rechnitz for money (before they tossed out Rav Sekula) he'd say, "when you treat my shver (Belsky) appropriately."

When Belsky took over, supposedly, Rechnitz gave them a lot of money. At the dinner that honored Belsky (after he recovered) Leshkowitz claimed the dinner made an amazing amount of money.

Can Rechnitz singlehandedly bail out the whole Torah Vodaas like he does for Tzvi Belsky in Telz?

What's pshat that the YTV yeshiva ketana is packed & hard to get into? Does Belsky have nothing to do with it?
