On Covid and Haredim....

Guest post by Professor Shaul Magid

On COVID and haredim:
This has become a national issue but is one that has persisted from the beginning of the crisis. Of late there has been much written by Modern Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews about the haredim, how they are behaving and why they are behaving that way. While well-placed, I found a lot did not have a real foundational and experiential understanding of the haredi world. I lived in Boro for almost three years in the late 1970s. It was a long time ago but I think I came to understand and absorb that world and something of that remains.

This is NOT an apologia for the haredim; what is happening is horrible and will damage that community for years. They erred seriously and now are paying the price, as well as bearing responsibility for others. What I am trying to do, however, is understand what evoked this response in this way.

Yssocher Katz posted what I found to be the most thoughtful post on the haredim I have seen. Without apologies he tried to situated a value system in the orbit of behavior and  suggest that while this is a mistake, it comes from a place that is not unreasonable. He dealt mostly with religious practice and in a religious register.

I will offer a more societal, maybe sociological rendering that squares with to Yssocher's remarks.

The haredi community is a much more social community than most of us live in. By social I mean that the collective life is driven by social events, from as small as daily minyan, night seder, to as big as a hasidishe wedding or the rebbe’s table on Sukkos. These events don’t have the same values in our world as in theirs. For them, this is the crux of their “leisure” time, it is largely where people meet outside business or study. I recall being surprised when I entered the haredi world that children were always a part of that social world. The notion of children not being invited to weddings is unheard of. One often finds a family with small children in Boro Park walking home from some simcha at midnight. I recall being back in America and invited to a secular wedding where we were told we could not bring children. It was arresting.

As a result, having all that taken away is different for them than for us. It is wrong not to have done it, but viewing it from our frame of reference misses something crucial: you are taking away their whole social world. Now of course they use Whattapp etc. but more fundamentally, it demanded more of them then us. We were more equipped in part because we are less social.

One can also include that living in close quarters with many children (other high risk communities also share this problem), makes social distancing very challenging. Many of us have spacious and/or comfortable places to live, Netflix, plugged into all manner of technology to keep us connected to the world and our kids out of our hair. Generally, the haredi world doesn’t have that kind of man-made internal entertainment. Many have computers and are increasingly connected to the outside world but the community has an ethos to minimize that as much as possible, especially among the young. Television or Fortnight is not their babysitter.

Of course, one can see, for boys, that yeshiva education is a highly social thing. One doesn’t study regularly alone, or if he does, he does so in a room with 100 other young men. That creates an expectation of sociality that is almost unconscious. Girls, of course, are deprived of that educational experience but their lives are founded on social circles in very close ways.

In any event, even as many leading rabbis came out strongly for masks etc (they did so late, but that is another story) it never was able to filter down to the people perhaps in part because the sacrifices were quite difficult and they did not have the will to recognize they were going to have radically revise their social structure. That may be true for us as well, but not in the same way. Haredim have zoom but many of them never used it before COVID and it is a steep learning curve. This is just to say that the social structure of haredim, at least in American centers, presents certain challenges to them that it doesn’t quite present to us.

They failed. But one can also ask why. Science? Maybe a bit but not really. Most of us don’t know much science either. Its really about authority not science. We trust that authority. For them there are competing authorities that also play a role. They are paying a high price.

There is also remnants of mistrust of the “state” (even though the state protects their right to exist), and the way the community for complicated and fascinating reasons for another time, have become big fans of the state of Israel and in most cases, lean pretty right because their religious beliefs serve as the foundation of their views on the Jewish state. A hasid who will vote for Trump because he is good for Israel could be the grandson and a hasid in Poland who was vehemently anti-Zionist. The grandson could live the same lifestyle, in the same Hasidic court. The one big difference is that the grandson will be pro-Israel (albeit not a Zionist).

In this way they fell for Trump, saw in him someone they could lean on, they are people who can be taken by a certain kind of strength. Hasidism often liked strong leaders. Hillel Zeitlin writes about the admiration of Czar Nicholas and Rasputin. In any case, they were convinced that liberal was bad for them. This has its own history in Europe when it was communism.

The haredim will have to comes to terms with this. And they will do it. And yes, tragically more people will likely die first. That community has been devastated from this disease much more than upper-class Jews in the suburbs or “uptown.” Theirs more resembles poorer neighbors with diverse populations. So they don’t need to hear from us how many people died. They know. I think we can help, perhaps, by understanding their challenges in context; a world that seems very much like ours, and in some ways is, but is also very different is ways that have made this moment history difficult, and tragic.

Magid missed the main point. There is a pact between Philly-Satmar who have hijacked the agenda of most Litvishe-Chassidishe that filters down to most other yeshivos & Chassidussen. Yes there are individual citizens who think along the lines described by Magid. The institutional-think is something else. Philly-Satmar claim at least, along the lines of fanatic Medieval Christians, that Torah will protect everyone from the virus. (Seforim warn it doesn't work that way) I don't think that Kaminetzky-Teitelbaum actually believe it, but this is what they say for public consumption. I think Teitelbaum may be motivated by control issues and Kaminetzky is certainly driven by a combination of control, plus his contempt of the medical establishment, as his next step after delegitimatizing vaccines. When I say control, that is both literal and money connected.

I believe the Professor gets it for the most part. What he may miss, (I say this with all due respect)is that the vast majority of Haredim are not only ignorant of Science, they are anti-Science. So, if a rebbe or a "godol" says anything at all that contradicts reality, not only will their followers obey the ignorant leaders, they will go out of their way to violate any government guidelines intentionally, as part of "sticking up" for their leader. Remember, the vast majority of Haredim, whether in Willy or Lakewood, never get past an 8th grade education. How would they know anything other than what is spoon-fed to them by reckless and arrogant leaders where power, money and control is their reason for being.

Notice Orange County closed various loopholes. Batei Medrash, kollelim & preschools are included in "educational". And they eliminated the Satmar-brainstormed shtick used in Monsey, including by many non-Satmar, to paste "child care" signs on the yeshiva buses.

https://hudsonvalleypost.com/orange-county-closes-many-schools-due-to-spike-in-covid-19/

On Sunday, Gov. Cuomo announced the state would start "aggressive enforcement" on the top-20 hotspot ZIP codes, which includes parts of Orange & Rockland counties.

On Monday, Cuomo announced he's closing schools in 9 New York City zip codes due to the soaring cases of COVID.

“Better safe than sorry," Cuomo said. "I wouldn't send my child to a school in a hotspot cluster that hasn't been tested.”

When asked if he'll be closing schools in Orange & Rockland counties he said "we may" but more research needs to be done before a decision.

Some were surprised Cuomo left off hotspots in Orange & Rockland counties, because zip codes 10590, 10952 and 10977, have the highest 3-day, 7-day & 14-day average of COVID.

Cuomo said the state doesn't have the same testing problems in Orange & Rockland County as in New York City. However, late Monday, Orange County decided to take action.

The Orange County Health Dept closed all public, private & religious schools / educational facilities in Village of Kiryas Joel & Town of Palm Tree.

"This includes schools not located in the town or village but have students residing in those localities and any transportation services, public or private, shall not transport those students to said schools," the order states.

The schools must close for at least 2 weeks & can't reopen without clearance from Orange County. The schools will remain closed until the town 7-day COVID positive rate is below 9%, officials say.

In fact, I contacted the governor's office and wrote --- Rockland and Orange Counties have double the Covid rate than the initial 9 zip codes....Either shut them all or none!

For the record, while I'm sure there are protekzia scored exceptions, some time after Aaron Kotler promoted himself to CEO, the BMG application process started requiring a high school diploma.

Pure window dressing....The heimeshe yeshivas do not have any high school program, and all the sons of the RYs never got past 8th grade.

Thanks for these comments. A few things. I assume Philly-Satmar means Willy-Satmar (not too many Satmar in Philadelphia).;) I certainly think it is more complicated than I wrote. My point was simply to mark the ways in which we are all inclined to view those we see as differerent as if they are like us in ways in which they are not. I am not so convinced of the science point; as I said, most of us don't know much about science, certainly immunology. It is about authority. I think the point about institutional power is very true. I think many of the leaders misconstrued what was happening until it was too late (many haredim in Europe did the same in regards to Nazism - the faous drash of the Belzer rebbe in Budapest on his way to Palestine). I can't speak to the contempt for the medical establishment other than to say, when haredim need medical attention they seek out the best doctors. The vaccine issue is separate, but I agree, related. In this way they seem aligned with other communities of faith (evangelical Christians and some Muslims) who also are skeptical of vaccines. One of the interesting news I just saw was that the zip codes with the spikes in NY are not necessarily aligned by being Orthodox neighborhoods but rather neighborhoods where there are large numbers of Trump supporters. The haredim have fell for Trump in ways that boggles the mind. As such they are behaving like other Trumpists. This does not discount that which has been said but only tells us this is not simply about "religion" per se.

Before opening up new yeshivos became a cottage industry, the only two Litvisher places officially with no high school English were Lakewood Mesivta & Beis Hatalmud taking high school age boys. There were other yeshivos like Telz making exceptions for yechidim.

The path of the RYs sons is based on a mythical issur believed to have been verbally 'codified' by R' Aron ztl. Even still, because the CEO did not have the same zitzfleish, I believe he took English in Adelphia. Because R' Dovid Schustal is such a kanoyee for the myth, he ended up getting embroiled in a din Torah over it. The other side brought major R' Aron talmid R' Yosef Rosenbloom who was mayid R' Aron never assered limudei chol for mesivtos, not even in Lakewood itself.

Paul Mendlowitz said...

R' Aron did asser high school secular studies ---- Interestingly enough, R' Elchonon Wasserman stepped in to mediate a difference of opinion with R'Shraga Feivel.

RSFM's view prevailed on R' Elchonon that American yeshivas "should" have high school education.

The schools in Lakewood do not have a meaningful high school program on par with the original Mesifta Torah Vodaath/Board of Regents curriculum.

Both Shustal boys never went to high school....Their father was a YTV graduate.

Their contempt for all things science is immense!

My wife's late uncle, who was a blackhat rav in Bnei Brak (in the early 1950's, after learning at BMG in Lakewood, he went to Israel to get his semichah -- Aharon Kotler apparently wasn't good enough for him), told me that his children (he had lots of them) did not need to learn science, English, or mathematics because they would all be rabbis or rebbitzins (they all are), and the kids (all of whom are grandparents by now) could not fathom why their cousin, my wife, wanted to go to medical school.

But trying to have a convo with them about anything scientific was very frustrating.

First I apologize to Prof. Magid that in my haste I did not address him with his proper title.

Much has changed since the Boro Park of the 1970s that sent many of it's watered-down Hungarian sons to Philly.

In the 1980s the yeshiva solidified as a cult personality around R' Elya Svei.

By the end of the 1990s, the Litvish & watered-down Hungarians had completed their exodus to Flatbush & Monsey after cashing out their real estate to the Chassidishe for top dollar.

With R' Elya losing his faculties in the 2000s, Kaminetzky moved to take over & enhance the cult for himself as something much more than the comical butt of jokes that it was.

Not only has Kaminetzky strove for a world takeover in the last 5 years through his many talmidim who today serve as American roshei yeshiva & poskim, but he has also tried to control the agenda in Eretz Yisroel by having Rav Kanievsky held incommunicado for manipulation.

By the time the pandemic commenced, Kaminetzky realized in Satmar a useful ally. Aron Teitelbaum harbored Philly in Kiryas Joel, a much safer location to illegally operate their yeshiva away from meddling police. And while Satmar duplicated the Agudah process of control on all anti-Zionist Chassidish groups, the Kaminetzkys have been huddling with them to think of einfalls in outwitting public health authorities.

For public consumption purposes, this alliance with Satmar plays well for the Philly parent body who are mesmerized with the old romantic notion that R' Elya attached to the anti-Zionist Brisker Rov. This is a farce however even when not taking into account that Brisk denounced the Kaminetzkys a few years ago as reshoyim. Philly never tells anyone that R' Elya was desperate to become talmid of the Rov and only ended up in Lakewood when the Rov rejected him. For the next 60 years, there were very few Philly talmidim who were allowed into Brisk under R' Berel and then R' AJ. And even then, many of those yechidim were not considered to be a good fit for the yeshiva.

"R' Elchonon Wasserman stepped in to mediate"

R' Dovid Schustal lost the din Torah due to the testimony of Rav Rosenbloom. I suppose because R' Aron being mevatel daas to R' Elchonon is what Rav Rosenbloom meant.

All this is fascinating "insider baseball" about haredi Philadelphia. I knew of R. Elya in my day and some people who learned there but not the details which you describe so well (my ex-in laws learned in Telsche in Cleveland). All fascinating. I'm not quite sure though how this relates to the discussion. Yes, I agree institutional power is an important point. And as a scholar of European Hasidism, it was all happening there too, even more so. But can you elaborate how it all relates to the COVID crisis aside from the fact, which I readily accept, that power brokers were using this to solidify their power? Thanks.

Jewish Telegraphic Agency — Last week, a photo of a Hasidic Rebbe from Boro Park wearing a mask outdoors went viral, even prompting top NYC health official Mitchell Katz to cite him, who he called the "Bobovitch Rebbe", as a model of responsible leadership during the uptick in COVID in Orthodox communities.

But now the Rebbe, Rabbi Mordechai Duvid Unger, head of the Bobov "45" sect, has tested positive himself.

According to BoroPark24 news, Unger tested positive for COVID & is experiencing mild symptoms.

The photograph of Unger wearing a mask was taken just before Yom Kippur, days after New York City threatened several heavily Orthodox neighborhoods with consequences if they didn't bring down their infection rates.

But last Monday, attendees at Unger’s synagogue said there were no masks in sight at the services.

They were really surprised Jews had more than one leader!

Hasidim march in Ashdod to bury Pittsburgher Rebbe Mordechai Leifer

Leifer, 64, for decades led Hasidim in Ashdod’s Kiryat Pittsburgh, died of COVID

Not his death, lockdown, virus — prevented 1000s of Hasidim crowding his funeral, violating laws

Many were from other cities. The Sadigura Rebbe released photos of same indifference to rules

At the funeral, mourners resisted efforts to scatter & began rioting

Disregard for rules even at the funeral of a rabbi felled by Covid, is normal. Scarcely a day goes by sans contempt for rules by a Haredi group

Virus czar Gamzu says Haredi morbidity is 4x the norm. Haredim, 12% of Israel, account for 40% cases

Anti-Haredi resentment runs wide. Even those sympathetic to culture gaps driving resistance to rules — communal prayer, large families in small apts, 1-to-1 study — are stunned by rampant violations

Also frustrated: Haredim themselves, who acknowledge failure to cope dominates their media & politics.

Betrayal: Moysrim

Ishay Cohn, Kikar Hashabat analyst: “Haredi reporters exhaustively documenting Hasidim, incite vs Haredim. There’s no mitzva to publicize Hasidim flouting, to poke the eye of secularists”

Haredi response to Cohn is less charitable. Dudi Zilbershlag, strategist for Bibi & Olmert & voice on Haredi affairs in broader media: “I question nobility of intentions (Haredim uploading all rule breaking to social media.) They harm. The Kiryat Gat photo caption: ‘according to restrictions,’ protects the writer included among moysrim”

The publicist photo shows cops in Kiryat Gat checking up; they receive blessing of the Rebbe. (Police say it's “out of context”) It shows people standing close & no masks

Moysrim connotes informing on Jews to anti-Semite Czarist commissars, in Haredi parlance to notify police of gatherings

Zilbershlag’s accusation astounds. Cohen is angry at sects breaking rules + flaunting online, driving anti-Haredi resentment. Zilbershlag’s response: It's intentional

In an epidemic in 1848 Vilna, Rabbi Salanter said to eat on Yom Kippur in fear fasting would render them susceptible

His son Itzik Lipkin said, the sage was concerned not only for health but reputation too. He feared a fast in an epidemic would lead non-Jews to say “for faith of Israel they brought sickness upon selves”

Haredism is conscious purpose. Haredim dress different not only as forebears did, or stricture, but to stand out, visibly bear tradition

A Hasidic Rebbe says, special dress means “I can’t line up for a movie without dragging the whole Judaism in"

Haredi dress, barriers of appearance between them to outside signal loyalty to the circle. Haredim report satisfaction due to solidarity in otherness

Haredim aren't unaware how they appear; it's central to them

It explains Zilbershlag accusing some Haredim stoke anti-Haredism in outside society. They believe barriers should be higher

part 2

Alas, it works

“Easy to spot us,” laments Mishpacha editor Yossi Elituv. “We wear black. Media show Haredim in virus stories for no other reason than compelling imagery. It costs. With govt not functioning, it pits Israelis vs another. A country collapses in 7 months, leaders flee to private struggles, leaving the nation to bleed, you suddenly find Haredim, Visibility's a convenient stand-in for broader collapse & led to predictable Haredi response. In 7 months, Haredi trust in anything beyond Haredim has collapsed”

Arye Erlich, Israel Radio anchor: “Haredim are distinct, painted in palette, in shtreimels. Not Israelis ignoring beach rules, that’s not a story. Weak adherence post months suffocating. Shul, tish, nothing. It passes, human nature plays down. Anti-Bibi protests don’t justify Haredi rule breaking, but explain in part. We know of 10 Commandments of Israeliness is ‘never be the sucker’. To combat maddening laxity, Israel must engage Haredim, try to understand them"

Erlich sounds born in despair

Haredi leaders don’t heed restrictions, even as the virus fells family & rabbis

They know how bad they look. They have no idea what to do

"how it all relates to the COVID crisis"

Kaminetzky previously tried to snowball his Orwellian & deadly anti-vaxx insanity to gantz Klal Yisroel. When it didn't work as well as planned he borrowed tactics from Animal Farm's Doberman Pinschers. The Agudah of then was lukewarm to the idea so he sat on the head of R' Malkiel Kotler who's torn by Philly propaganda since the zayde ztl was pro-vaxx + he has a hard time finding any gedolim who agree with Philly. Philly then found a pair of sympathetic British rabbonim to sign with them to pressure Lakewood pediatricians & yeshivos via guilt trips how they're supposedly oyver halacha in pro-vaxx. They manipulated Rav Kanievsky there too, squeezing a half-baked, possibly anti-vaxx blurb out of him, as ludicrous as it sounds being his shver Rav Elyashev is fiercely pro-vaxx. Kaminetzky's wife was caught running conference calls out of State to advise evading County Health Depts. When Rockland Co NY heard the recording for their area, there was a huge crackdown on co-conspirator yeshivos.

The Kaminetzkys have huge disrespect for the medical-pharma professions. They're on tape calling them "Amalek"

Philly has an obsession in using a manipulated Rav Kanievsky as proxy to dupe whoever hasn't fallen in line with them. When important rabbonim tried to shut down the Rubashkin shnorr fest in the 5 Towns, they came under vicious personal attack. The next thing you know, a statement supposedly repudiating the rabbonim was cranked out of Rav Kanievsky & Shmuel Kaminetzky is whizzed up the Turnpike to the White Shul for a front row seat. Granted there's no proof this time of direct Philly manipulation but he's at least always at the scene of the crime.

When almost every gadol worldwide signed a few years ago they would excommunicate Kaminetzky pere et fils, which the dastardly duo was able to weasel out of last minute by deception, Rav Kanievsky was among the handful of missing signatures. Lipschutz flew Kaminetzky to Israel when things quieted down for a Yated "Angel was a Centerfold" whitewash, where Kaminetzky was all smiles with Rav Kanievsky.

In the Corona era, previous dry runs secured huge Philly gains over previous failures. Philly's now managed to hijack the entire agenda of Torah Umesorah, Agudah & it's farce camp division. Rav Kanievsky manipulations are more concisely worded in Philly's favor (except during rare moments of the Kanievsky hostage ordeal broken by the Ponivizher rosh yeshiva sneaking in to talk sense into him).

Filthydelphia said...

Philly originally told everyone stay open way past Purim. Some complied even to the point of being arrested. When this & the huge death toll became a PR nightmare, Agudah-TU-Yated covered for Philly by recreating old Shmuel as 2 men in 1. Now we're shown a benevolent R' Shmuel who deadpans how he's at the forefront saving lives the entire time. Meanwhile, when he heard minyanim all over, bifrat Lakewood, were in moratorium, he called all his posek & rosh yeshiva talmidim to make sure they were secretly restarted. And Philly was behind all the yeshivos, including their own of course, starting to reopen as early as pre-Pesach.

A panel of Modern & Open Orthodox quack MDs was assembled at Agudah to advise yeshivos on lawbreaking to work around quarantines. The camp org brainstormed hourly on tricks to evade State agents while numerous illegal overnight camps continuously operated.

Philly's made sure many yeshivos make life miserable for families with immunodeficient kids, to strongarm them back into the class. TU's Shmuel Klein publicly admits this was decided at a meeting & dictated to all affiliates. Never mind anyone just plain fearful of the virus - they're expelled if not returning in-class.

Philly won't even allow the sick with severe covid symptoms to see a doctor! They're bullied by many yeshivos carrying out Philly's demented mandate.

Philly was behind the unified front of no vitur on pandemic tuition in not providing services. Not clear if Philly went this far, but in practice it extends to things even beyond tuition that are outright gezel.

The Mara d'Asra can remind me if I missed any other convoluted Philly scheming.

Police clashed with Haredi men & children in Beit Shemesh Tues afternoon, in the latest outbreak of violence between the community & authorities enforcing virus regulations that ban mass gatherings.

Police said 3 were arrested during scuffles that broke out after officers were pelted with stones & other objects while patrolling the Heftziba neighborhood. Police were denounced as “Nazis.”

Several vehicles were damaged.

In a video of the incident, an officer could be seen hit in the face with a can. Another officer raised his fist to strike a man, as the scene developed into a melee.

At several points, police could be seen shoving & dragging people, including a teen boy.

In another video, small Haredi children attacked a car carrying a soldier. In the video, young kids could be seen hurling stones at the car, smashing windows, as adults look on & encourage them.

Criticism of Haredim has been growing, with a significant number disregarding lockdown during Sukkot, including continuing mass gatherings.

Another video from Beit Shemesh on Tues shows masses of people dancing & marching toward police, who retreat backward.

Haredim see soaring infection rates 2.5x the national average. Spiraling infections prompted lockdown, the 2nd this year. Though scheduled to be lifted at the end of Sukkot, officials say it'll likely continue for at least a week longer.

There have also been clashes in the Haredi city Bnei Brak & Haredi settlement Beitar Illit.
