The Jewish Rag Gets a Facelift!

Elliot Resnick, Jewish Press editor who entered US Capitol on Jan. 6, to be replaced

(JTA) — Elliot Resnick, the editor of a politically conservative Jewish newspaper who was identified among the crowd that breached the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, is out of the job.

Shlomo Greenwald, a grandson of the founders of The Jewish Press who has worked at the weekly paper since 2004, announced in a Facebook post Wednesday morning that he would be assuming the role of senior editor at the paper, replacing Resnick.

“I am both exhilarated and daunted by the work ahead in building on the great things The Jewish Press has always done while making improvements,” Greenwald said in a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, declining to comment on the paper’s decision to replace Resnick. “The Orthodox Jewish community in the US is broad, and I hope to make a newspaper that will speak to and enlighten the community. The core interests of the community remain: fighting for a secure Israel and advocating for religious freedom at home, areas that The Jewish Press has always championed, and that I will continue to embrace in this role.”

Greenwald did not respond immediately to questions about the future political direction The Jewish Press would take under his leadership. But he takes over at a time when the political identity of the newspaper — and its editor — has been the subject of widespread attention.

Resnick was identified in YouTube videos of the Capitol breach by a researcher and first reported on by Politico in April.

A video from Jan. 6 shows Resnick stumbling as he enters the Capitol building through a doorway while a Capitol police officer tries to keep out the intruders. His face is clearly visible when he reappears a few minutes later, standing nearby as another person shouts at a Capitol police officer.

At the time Naomi Mauer, the publisher of The Jewish Press, appeared to stand behind Resnick.

“As we understand the facts, we believe that Mr. Resnick acted within the law,” Mauer told Politico in an email, declining to respond to follow-up questions.

Mauer did not respond immediately to a JTA request for comment.

Resnick assumed the position of editor at The Jewish Press in 2018. He has long had a history of using incendiary language and has called the gay rights movement “evil.” Under Resnick’s editorship, The Jewish Press was criticized by the Anti-Defamation League in 2019 after publishing an op-ed titled “The Pride Parade: What Are They Proud Of” comparing gay marchers in the New York event to animals, adulterers and thieves.

“If blacks resent America’s [sic] so much, let them discard Christianity (which the ‘white man’ gave them) and re-embrace the primitive religions they practiced in Africa,” Resnick wrote in a tweet in 2019.

“Can someone give me a coherent reason why blackface is racist?” he wrote in another tweet that year.

Resnick was not the only editor in Jewish Press history to espouse racist views.

The paper was edited in the 1960s by Rabbi Meir Kahane, a Jewish nationalist who advocated violence against Arabs and was banned from the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. Though the paper distanced itself from Kahane in 1969, it still lists him among the paper’s prominent past editors on its website.

In 2015, Resnick gave a glowing review to a Kahane biography written by Kahane’s wife and described his own experience of “near trance” while reading one of Kahane’s books in high school.

Attorney General Mandelblit announced today he's decided to indict Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman of UTJ-Agudah for obstruction of justice & breach of trust, pending a hearing.

The pending charges relate to suspicions Litzman used his former position as deputy health minister to prevent extradition to Australia of Malka Leifer, ex-principal of a Haredi girls school in Melbourne accused of sexually assaulting minors (Leifer was recently extradited after a years long saga); & to prevent the closure of a deli cited for health violations.

Mandelblit won’t indict Litzman for bribery, a charge police also recommend.

Mandelblit said Litzman, in both cases, “used his status & power to promote interests of private individuals, using his govt power for improper reasons & against the interests of those for whom he's responsible as deputy minister.”

Litzman, like all public officials facing indictment, will be given the chance to persuade the AG not to press charges in a hearing likely to take place in the coming months.

Responding to the announcement, Litzman’s office issued a statement: “We believe in Minister Litzman’s full innocence,” & welcoming Mandelblit’s decision not to include a bribery charge.

The statement said Litzman was readying for the hearing & expressed hope “with God’s help” he won’t ultimately be charged.

In the Leifer case, Litzman's accused of pressuring Health Ministry underlings to alter conclusions of psychiatric evaluations that deemed Leifer fit for extradition.

Leifer was eventually extradited to Australia in January, nearly 13 years after she fled Melbourne as allegations against her were coming to light & a 6 year legal process, during which a court determined she feigned mental illness to avoid facing justice.

In a 2nd case, Litzman's suspected of influencing officials to prevent the closure of a food business whose owner he's close to — a closure ordered due to “serious sanitary issues that led to sickness of a number of people who ate its products,” police said in 2019, recommending a bribery charge.

Elected to the Knesset in 1999, Litzman, who currently serves as housing & construction minister, was de facto head of the health ministry for over a decade, as either deputy or full health minister from 2009 until mid-2020.

In January, Litzman stepped down as chair of UTJ-Agudah after 18 years at the helm, with Moshe Gafni taking the lead. Litzman is now the party’s No. 2.

Preaching to the choir is part of the job.

If these schmos said the truth of what a sadistic bastard Yudi Frankel is when he leaves kids with no yeshiva, they would be terminated by big cheese Sruly Orzel.

Eitan Biran, 5, the only survivor of the cable car disaster in Italy woke up from his coma yesterday with his aunt & doctors by his bedside.

“He’s ventilated & regaining consciousness,” a doctor at Regina Margarita Hospital in Turin, said. “It'll be a gradual restoration of consciousness, which requires time & psychological support. He already opened his eyes & it’s very important he sees a familiar face next to him.”

According to Italian media, a psychiatrist has been tasked with breaking the news of the loss of his family members to Eitan & a team of psychologists will be available for his treatment. Eitan’s parents, younger brother & great-grandparents were killed in the crash along with 9 others.

3 arrests were made Tues for manslaughter in connection with the disaster, including the owner-manager of the Mottarone cable car company, the company’s head engineer & the service director.

According to the prosecutor of Verbania province, the site operators were aware there was a problem with the emergency brake & “tampered with it” before the crash in “a conscious action” to avoid putting the cable car out of service for repair. Investigators say a clamp deactivating the emergency brake had been placed as a stop-gap repair, which prevented the brake from activating when the lead cable snapped.

At least one suspect admitted placing the clamp on the brake. The suspects face multiple criminal charges.

The mourning in Italy has turned into outrage as it becomes apparent the accident was entirely preventable.

“The cable cars were like Russian roulette for anyone who rode it,” newspaper Corriere della Sera stated.

The bodies of the 5 Israeli victims were flown to Israel yesterday after a memorial service in the local Jewish community in Stresa.

Query: If Klass's daughter had not been an agunah, would the Jewish Press have been so quick to take up the cudgels for the agunah issue?

The Jewish Press: Yellow journalism with blue ink.
