A Russian and A Hasid Walk Into a Classroom.....The Hasid Asks What's a Solar System?

The solar system

A third of Russians believe that the Sun orbits the Earth, according to a survey on scientific misconceptions published Tuesday by VCIOM, the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion.

The number of Russians that did not believe the Earth revolves around the Sun, 35%, had grown from the 28% that believe such in 2007.

Humans and dinosaurs coexisted?

Those that believed that human beings existed at the same time that dinosaurs roamed the earth decreased from 30% in 2007 to 21% in 2022.

Around 20% of Americans believe that dinosaurs became extinct as little as 100 years ago, according to a 2021 study commissioned by Boat Rocker Studios.  About 40% of the US population believes that dinosaurs died out between 2,000 and 10,000 years ago. Some believe that dinosaurs still exist in remote locations.

Issues of scientific literacy in Russia

“According to the results of the survey, it is clear that Russians have an average and low level of scientific literacy," said Anna Kuleshova, VCIOM department of publishing program head. "The same situation takes place in many countries of the world: Anti-scientific views are steadily preventing not only education but also - as we have seen recently - anti-pandemic measures, vaccination, etc."

The study noted that while many were mistaken about the solar system, the general scientific literacy of the population was gradually increasing over the last 15 years.

"Logically, the first step in the fight against low literacy should be the recognition of people broadcasting pseudoscientific judgments that their level of knowledge is low and insufficient," said Kuleshova. "But this is precisely what is almost impossible: The less literate a person is, the more he is convinced that he knows everything, and is not prone to critical thinking."

The survey found that young people, active Internet users, those with higher education, and residents of Moscow were among those with higher levels of scientific literacy. Those with lower levels of scientific literacy were those older than 60 years, those who watched television regularly, lived in rural areas and had secondary school and less education.

The study was done by a telephone survey of 1,600 people aged 18 and over. The margin of error was 2.5%.

VCIOM is a state-owned polling firm and says on its website that it is the most well-known polling company in Russia.

How is this a surprise? For centuries Russian has had a 1% aristocracy and the other 99% were ignorant serf peasants. The surprise is that so many Russians actually know what revolves around what. Legacy of mandatory Soviet education.

When else has Hershel Schlechter been influenced $$$ to turn a blind eye from the halacha that gerim are not allowed to marry someone they dated before kabolas mitzvos?

https://forward.com/news/512645/kushner-book-judaism-ivanka-trumps-donald-trump-benjamin-netanyahu-israel/

Kushner writes that after dating Ivanka for some time, she told him she would consider converting to Judaism. “We began meeting with a rabbi and studying and practicing Shabbat together,” he wrote. “I saw that Ivanka was enjoying these rituals.” The two spent Friday evenings together eating takeout from his favorite eatery, the 2nd Ave Deli, until Ivanka Trump offered to start cooking for the Shabbat meal. “She loved it and quickly became an excellent chef.”

As they began to talk about marriage, Kushner went to see Trump at one of his restaurants, Trump Grill at Trump Tower. “I could feel my voice shake as I managed to say that Ivanka and I were getting more serious and that she was in the process of converting,” he said.

“Well, let me ask you a question,” Trump asked Kushner. “Why does she have to convert? Why can’t you convert?” Kushner replied that she had made the decision on her own and was comfortable with it. “That’s great,” Trump then remarked. “Most people think I’m Jewish anyway. Most of my friends are Jewish. I have all these awards from the synagogues. They love me in Israel.”

He added that he hoped Kushner was serious because Tom Brady, the iconic NFL quarterback, was also courting his daughter.

Working as senior advisers to the president, the couple’s Shabbat observance clashed at times with their professional responsibilities, and sometimes they could not observe as strictly as he preferred.

After the 2020 election, as he and Ivanka Trump were preparing to leave government, Kushner writes he was eager to “go back to fully observing the Sabbath on Friday evenings at sundown.”

Kushner writes that his daily lunch at the White House was “a special chopped salad topped with sliced avocado and grilled kosher chicken,” which was prepared in the White House Mess, a small dining facility run by the U.S. Navy. Dinner was sometimes “an omelet with American cheese.” (Doesn't say if the kitchen was kashered)

Dinosaurs today continue to coexist with humans!

Some of the ones in Israel even post pashkevilim that say vaccines cause autism, and they prohibit people from saying the word "c-nc-r."
