THE UOJ ANNUAL STATE OF THE JEWISH UNION ADDRESS!

THE UOJ CLASSICS - FIRST POSTED JANUARY 2007

Do any of you really stop and think what this gedolim thing is all about? Does anybody ever stop and think; when did our Mesorah stop? Are the proclamations now rendered by the group of stand-up comics known as the Moetzes Gedolei Torah (they all agree that they are gedolim), part of our Mesorah? Will our great grandchildren consider Pinchos Scheinberg's penetrating psak, Mesorah? Is it part of our Mesorah for hassidic rebbes to permit their followers, nay, encourage and urge their followers to destroy each other in the name of who is the rightful heir to the dynasty, actually a milchemet mitzvah or holy war? Can any human fathom the sanctioned destruction of their souls in the name of Judaism?

Can you believe that THOUSANDS of people are actually waiting for the Lubavitcher Rebbe to dust himself off and get on a white donkey for his announcement that he's Moshiach? Thousands of faxes to his tomb weekly are believed to be read and answered by him? ARE YOU NUTS?

There are NO gedolim, only people. Some people are very wise, some are not so wise, and some are downright evil and ignorant.

Somebody dies and a son takes over the family business, have we hatched a gadol?

Somebody else is a charismatic speaker with some Torah knowledge, have we a gadol?

Is not a gadol suppose to be a giant, a legend, a titan, an icon, a tzaddik, an extremely wise man, a baal machshava, so embedded with truth and Torah, that it becomes inseparable from their being? Torah and truth must be intertwined, inseparable, or there is no Torah! The Torah is truth; if it becomes distorted it is not Torah! These imposters that we have today are just that, phony fraudulent imposters and rabbi-impersonators. Gedolim? How many of you saw a real live gadol? Spent time with a gadol? Learned at the feet of a gadol? How many of you ever saw a human being so developed with their tziddkus that they would rather die than utter a sheker or intentionally hurt another human in any manner, by action or inaction?

How many of you ever saw a human that would actually bawl after hearing the pain of a fellow Jew that was a complete stranger to them? How many? Who among you can actually, really feel pain, unable to eat, lose weight, cry, when you find out another Jewish child was molested by a rebbe who was suppose to teach him Torah? How many? Look at yourselves! You go around with your daily business just wondering where you're going for Pesach and if the tea room will be open 24 hours!

Do you care? DO YOU CARE? Does anyone care?

I have met, learned by, spent considerable time with, and spoken to different generations of giants, I know what a gadol is; there are no more gedolim. What we have today are a pathetic group of ignorant, uneducated, unsophisticated, boorish, selfish, money driven, losers! From the U.S.A. to the "Holy Land" each person that is considered a gadol by the masses, falls into one of these categories, some fall into every category. I despise them; every single one of them for destroying "emunas chachomim", a little bit at a time. When you know the real thing, how can you live with these pitiful morons? When you experienced the awe of great Jews, when you are blessed with the ability to comprehend greatness, you can't accept in any way, what are posing today as rabbis. These people are giants/gedolim of utter destruction!

I am amused with the example that the Agudah sets as "achakolo b'chol yom sheyavo", "we await daily the arrival of Moshiach", while they book Madison Square Garden seven and one half years in advance for their version of "American Idol", called siyum hashas. Some emunah! Of course, they will tell you, that's in the event He does not come. I say BULL-CHOLENT! They have an agenda that does not include your welfare. Remember, Lipa Margulies led the gathering in saying tehillim, can you imagine that? Frankly, I would have rather have had Jimmy Carter lead the crowd with tehillim and the reading of his Jew-hate-filled book. With Carter, at least, there's no ambiguity as to who the enemy is.

Rabosai; we are in a generational war. We will win, no doubt. But it will take energy, participation, and fortitude. The Taliban-like rabbis and their supporters must be defeated. There is no room in our civilized society for "halacha" sanctioned evil. The Internet is as evil as a gun. You can use the Internet to protect yourself and your family with it, by learning, studying, researching, increasing your income, providing parnassah, and you can kill yourself with it, spiritually. Did you ever see a gun on trial? There is a person behind the gun/computer that must be educated and taught responsibile behavior with this great "weapon". You can fend off robbers in the middle of the night with a gun, or you can kill family members, Rachmana l'tzlan. Money can be used for good and evil, do you think these cavemen would consider meeting over a fire on the issue of banning money? Let's ban women while we're banning, women have caused men so much grief, pain, suffering and sin since Adam lost his tail bone:-). Especially now, they're wearing denim, now is the time!

THEY want to make these decisions for you, HA! They're in the Stone-Age. Who are they, the Nickelsburger Rebbe, the Dollarsburger Rebbe, the Drekburger Rebbe, the Carlos-bomber Rebbe, and the gang of terrorists that met on asareh b'Teves? What are their qualifications that they have rights to issue you 60 pages of fatwa manifesto directives on banning the use of the Internet? How do they earn a living? Off public assistance, that's how. This Internet issue is merely symbolic of the fear that they have. Too much information will ruin their business. Their ignorance and their inability to reconcile Torah and science makes them scared silly. You have the ability to access information that frightens them; they DO NOT want you to know anything other than what they tell you. This is not about porn sites, this is about their inability to control your thought process. Their death knell!

If you are convinced that rabbis and rebbes are no more closer to God than you are, they're out of business. If their brachas are worthless, why stand in line until the wee hours of the morning begging them to take your money? The more they take, the better they make you feel. JUST LIKE DRUGS! Do they care about you? Or are you only as good as your last check, or cash under the table to the gabbai-doorkeeper-zookeeper? What a freak show! What circus did they perform at before moving to Boro Park?

To paraphrase the verbiage of the great thinker, scientist/philosopher Carl Sagan; "their posturing, their imagined self-importance, their belief that they are somehow in a position of privilege in the universe, is unfathomable."

And these eternal words of wisdom of Sagan on the psychology of humans;(paraphrase) " the thought that you may have dedicated your life to a lie, that you may have accepted a conventional wisdom that no longer, if ever, corresponds to an external reality, is a very painful realization. A person will go to any lengths to prevent themselves from seeing that inadequate worldview that they dedicated their lives to."

My views and opinions may be the minority view for now in Orthodox Judaism, but since when does the majority view make it the correct view? Did not the majority of Jews in the time of Rabbi Akiva accept Bar-Kochba as the Messiah? Did not the vast majority of Jews in the time of Shabbtai Tzvi accept him as the Saviour of the Jews? Are not the followers of Jesus and Mohammed the majority religions of the world?

Very recently there was a psak from a world renown posek that would have adversely affected all commerce of Orthodox Jews. If not for one concerned Jew, the entire Orthodox world risked losing revenues perhaps in the hundreds of millions of dollars, because of the reckless conduct of this known posek.

Did Moshe Heinemann from Baltimore take the time and effort required to render a psak of this magnitude, that would have shut down all e-commerce sites of Orthodox Jews on Shabbos? Did he do the required verification by industry experts exactly how "virtual" transactions are transacted on weekends? Or did Moshe Heinemann stop off at his local bank and ask the bank teller about Saturday transactions, on his way to China to sign up a toy manufacturer with the Star K, in case an Orthodox child licked a Chinese produced toy? And when he did find out that he was dead wrong, how long did it take him to retract that idiot psak, as Yiddishe gelt was torched on fire?

It took him six very long months; he had to figure out how he was going to look politically and to ascertain that his business does not go up in smoke.

Did he care about your welfare?

Rabosai, have faith in yourselves. Grab yourself by the collar, pull yourself out of the doldrums you find yourself in. You've been duped, but it's not too late. Trust yourself to make appropriate decisions for yourself and your family, the Hats can not, will not, care not, and most certainly, should not!

Did one word of that 60 page fatwa include what to do with sexual predators posing as rebbes in our yeshivas? Is there one word about what to do with guys like Margulies, Belsky, Perlow, Fishman and the rest of these molester-enablers?

The state of our union is better than it was one year ago. We now know what all of these guys are about. Knowledge is extremely important and is power. We don't have the lame excuse anymore that we didn't know. We now know definitely that these are criminals in bed with each other. Are they going to make decisions for our welfare, or theirs?

The state of our union is now up to each and every individual that considers themselves a member of klal Yisroel. There's a huge hole in our "boat", if you don't fix it quickly, you and your children will drown. Fix the hole, or replace the boat for Heaven's sake, or perish!!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1120284/King-Con-stole-lives-British-widow-tells-fell-victim-Bernie-Madoff.html

Since at least two of the clients Madoff suckered are reportedly plotting his assassination - one a Russian oligarch, the other a Colombian drug baron said to have lost £300 million - perhaps he is mightily relieved to be under house arrest.
If a hit-man does manage to line him up in his sights, however, few New Yorkers will shed a tear. For in these times of deepening economic hardship, Madoff, with his ten palatial homes, four yachts and private plane, has become the living embodiment of all the unbridled greed and chicanery that infested Wall Street before the great crash.
There is universal outrage that he remains at large even though 100 cheques by him for more than £120 million were found in his desk drawers when he was arrested, and, over Christmas, he brazenly attempted to post more than £750,000 worth of diamond-encrusted Cartier watches and jewellery to his family, colleagues and friends.
'It's an absolute disgrace, a miscarriage of justice,' fumed one fur-coated neighbour, wealthy Swiss widow Cilgia Braxton. 'If he was some poor old man who'd stolen a few dollars on the subway, he would have been thrown in Ryker's Island prison.'
A construction worker, still wearing his grubby helmet after a hard day's toil on a nearby building site, agreed. 'They should nail that guy up,' he fumed. 'There are two types of law in this city - one for the rich and the other for the poor.'

The first rule of pride is this: When they run you out of town, walk like you're leading the parade.
I'll give Israel this: When international pressure got to be too much, Israel left Gaza as if it was Israel's bright idea, "a unilateral ceasefire."
In truth, Israel surrendered. It is "surrender" if you leave with Hamas rockets still flying into Israel, and with Gilad Shalit remaining in his private Auschwitz. Imagine how Shalit was tortured these past three weeks. Imagine being his parents. If this Gaza operation even resembled a success, Israel could have said, OK Hamas, we'll stop devastating your neighborhoods and killing your so-called civilians in exchange for two things: The rockets have to stop, and Shalit comes home.
What we see is that Hamas wasn't all that devastated; if they were, they'd have taken the deal.
Instead, Israel quit, like Roberto Duran not coming out for the next round, "no mas," throwing in the towel.
We know that Israel lost because Hamas set the terms: The rockets do not stop; Shalit stays where he is.
What would we be saying about Roosevelt and Churchill if they settled for a cease fire on Jan. 18, 1945, with the excuse that, hey, Hitler's supply lines have been damaged, but yes, he can still bomb London, and yes, the Jews are still in the camps. Even if it's only one Jew.
This war was supposed to re-establish Israel's deterrence. That was supposed to be the lesson. Instead, the lesson is that Israel quits before the rockets do.
Israel has established in Gaza exactly what it established in the Hezbollah war: That Israel can go three weeks and only three weeks, and then Israel looks at its watch (or at the European Union's watch) and goes home, job incomplete.
Hamas, like Hezbollah, is an Iranian satellite, a stand-in. This, like the 2006 war, is a harbinger of a worse war to come.

What if Iran is prepared to fight for four weeks? Is Israel prepared to go four? If Israel is so flustered by charges that it killed a stray civilian, be prepared that when Israel fights Iran we'll be told that every Israeli bomb falling on Iran is landing on nothing and no one but women and children, innocent babies and maternity wards. If Israel attacks Iran, you can bet that Iran's nuclear operation will suddenly be declared "peaceful," generating only nuclear energy to help Iranian orphans and United Nations relief facilities. The so-called "international community" will then help rebuild Iran's peaceful nuclear facility and they'll call it humanitarian aid. Israel will then send Iran medical supplies and halvah. With that scenario, already played out by Israel with Hamas, I don't see how Iran is deterred at all.
Israel should not be answering those who accuse Israel of war crimes by begging the cynics to believe that "we love life." That's embarrassing. It sounds like Mister Rogers.
If cynics accuse Jews of deliberately targeting civilians, don't answer like that doomed drama queen in "A Streetcar Named Desire," Blanche DuBoise: "Deliberate cruelty is unforgivable, and the one thing of which I have never, ever been guilty of."
Jews should be very, very worried when their leaders sound exactly like Blanche DuBoise.
Instead, Jews should answer that the premise of war is that cruelty is indeed forgivable, some things are worth dying for; better yet, some things are worth YOU dying for — you, Hamas. Disproportionate? As Gen. Patton said, the purpose of war is not to die for your country, it's to make the other son of a bitch die for his country. And that's what Israel did, making Hamas killers and their civilian supporters die in a war that Hamas started and Israel should have finished.
"A Streetcar Named Desire"? Better another Brando movie, "The Godfather." When charged with war crimes, Jews should answer unemotionally, but with total confidence, like Don Corleone: "I don't apologize for taking care of my family."
Israel had no business fighting this war in the first place, and risking the lives of Jewish soldiers, if Israel had no intention of going the distance. Why did any Israeli soldier have to die, leaving family, friends and lovers to mourn for the next 60 years? To set Hamas back six weeks? Israel didn't set Hamas back six hours. Rockets were flying the day that Israel left Gaza.
And Israel continues to send "humanitarian aid" into Gaza, aid that Israel admits is being hijacked by Hamas. What parent would give their child's kidnappers "humanitarian aid" without even demanding a phone call, a chance to hear their son's voice, even a Red Cross visit to the kidnapped child? No, Israel is facilitating the flow of food, cash and supplies to Shalit's kidnappers in exchange for nothing.
And if, G-d forbid, Shalit is already dead, then Israel ought to withhold aid to Hamas at least until Shalit gets a decent burial, if not long after, if Israel has any dignity left. There have been over two dozen instances in recent years in which the Palestinian Authority has suspended talks with Israel to protest one Israeli policy or another but Israel won't suspend the sending of tons of supplies to Hamas to protest the torture and imprisonment of Shalit that is in total violation of the supposedly sacred Geneva guidelines for a prisoner of war.
That's right, the very same Geneva guidelines for p.o.w.'s that so inflamed politicians, academics, clergy, editors and, ethicists from around the world to demand that Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo be closed, and that its Al Qeda prisoners not be "tortured," have never sparked a similar international campaign to close the Hamas dungeon where Shalit is tortured, a dungeon where war crimes are never tabulated. Odd, how concern for Shalit eludes the humanitarians. Pity him in his lonely war, the last Jewish soldier in Gaza.
In the end, like all Israeli wars, these past weeks were somehow inspirational if only for the courage and holiness of the soldiers. They are the best of us, and "us" is the key word. The goodness and passion of young Israelis — who were winning this war but who will suffer its consequences — may not deter Iran but it's a reason to believe, and to fall in love with the Jewish people, all over again.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2009/01/11/Indicted_Baltimore_mayor_carries_on_duties/UPI-72581231706791/

BALTIMORE, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- A day after Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted on charges of accepting gifts from developers the official reportedly went on about her official duties.

The Baltimore Sun reported Sunday that after being indicted Friday the embattled mayor maintained a public schedule, visiting a gym in West Baltimore and later speaking to underprivileged girls at a Boys and Girls Club in Brooklyn, Md.

"If you make a mistake today, you can get up the next day and keep focused with what you need to do," the Democrat told the girls.

Dixon, the first female mayor of Baltimore, faces up to 85 years in prison if convicted.

She has declined to answer questions about the charges, which include theft, perjury, fraud and misconduct in office. The Sun reported that most of the allegations against her stem from 2004 and 2005, when she was City Council president.

Among other charges, she is accused of stealing hundreds of dollars of gift cards donated by two developers to be used for needy families.

The mayor has been the target of a three-year investigation by state prosecutor Richard Rohrbaugh. Developer Ronald Lipscomb, Dixon's former boyfriend, and Democratic Councilwoman Helen Holton were indicted last week.

I am disgusted with all the Internet and media coverage of Zahler's "suicide". Let me tell you something... I KNEW ZVI. He was not "bipolar" or anything. He was 100% normal. I have a second cousin who has manic depression, so I know the situation in detail and I know what signs to look for.

Let me just tell you the apparent FACTS. Shortly before his "suicide," Zvi seemingly found an Internet article claiming that his Ner Israel Rabbinical College (NIRC) is/was involved in some grave crimes. From what I was able to figure out, that was "DEATH ON THE NIRC" by Semangelaf (http://jewishsurvivors.blogspot.com/2007/08/is-this-reality-or-fantasy-or-little.html). Fifi was staggered.

I believe that he went to the NIRC leadership to try to clarify the situation and that he also (unsuccessfully) tried to confront rabbi Moshe Eisemann. That's precisely why the "Baltimore Jewish Times" wrote that NIRC president rabbi Sheftel Neuberger refused to discuss the Zahler case with them! The Ner Israel administration saw "the writing on the wall." They just chose to apply its message to Zvi Dovid instead of themselves...

NOW JUST THINK ABOUT IT: on the last day of the merry Chanukah holiday, a really (yes, really!) happy married young (and 100% normal!) man in his first year of marriage who was going to become a joyful father in just a couple of months for the first time in his 24-year life, a man whose father was a thriving international developer in Canada (ruling out Fifi's financial problems), lied (AND HE NEVER LIED!) to his poor pregnant wife that he was going out "to pray" (Fifi got out of his house at around 6 a.m. - one and a half hour (!) before sunrise in Baltimore - way too early for any local prayer service), got into his Honda and drove for almost one hour (!) to the Millard E. Tydings Memorial Bridge to jump into the Susquehanna River!

Zvi Zahler, an excellent swimmer, apparently also expected to instantly die hitting the water surface, as he didn't tie anything heavy to his body to help him drown - if so, he certainly had no need to drive so far: he could just jump off any tall building in his neighborhood, even the high-school building at NIRC campus which is being renovated right now!

Listen to this, folks: Zvi Dovid, who always stretched his hand to help everyone around, who was so much meticulous not to offend ANYBODY - this very man DID NOT EVEN THINK about his poor pregnant wife, his unborn baby, his parents, his in-laws, and his many caring relatives and friends on that last day of Chanukah as he was driving to his death for almost ONE HOUR!

GIVE ME A BREAK! Only a totally selfish and crazy ANIMAL wouldn't turn around his car at the end of his trip and drive back home, not Fifi! WAKE UP! Nothing to do with depression! THIS IS ALL ONE BIG COVER-UP!

So this is what really happened: THERE WERE TWO CARS! Fifi was drugged and plummeted off the bridge! Do not forget that that weekend was a "Shabbos-off" at NIRC, so they knew that there would be fewer witnesses, as many kollel couples were still on their way back to Baltimore. (Btw, Zahler's funeral at the Sol Levinson & Bros. funeral home (which is anyhow right next to the NIRC campus) was not because of his "suicide" but because Ner Israel allows only their rabbis to be eulogized in that holy study hall - "bittul Torah" (taking away from the Torah study) for anybody else as the NIRC administration typically "explains.")

And plus do not forget the initial shady conflicting reports coming even from the Maryland State Police and the "Baltimore Sun": car accident (couldn't they see an undamaged car?), murder (by a policeman!), and... at last - SUICIDE! That's because NIRC thugs were working overtime!

Open your eyes! THAT WAS NOT A SUICIDE - THAT WAS A MURDER! They are just trying to cover it up! Nowadays they will kill anyone and still get away saying that "the guy was just mentally sick." Go ahead, try to prove to the world that you were NORMAL! And we can't do anything about it: if you can't shut up your mouth in Baltimore, the "authorities" will get you! I would like to say something but I have my wife and kids - and I am TOO SCARED to jeopardize them! I'll just skip town in the very near future. MAY HASHEM AVENGE YOUR PURE INNOCENT BLOOD, ZVI DOVID BEN MOSHE ZAHLER!

Hikind trying to impress Boog said...

Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) has announced he will travel with former Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee to Israel next week for a three-day trip to demonstrate their support for a united Jerusalem and their belief that Jews have the right to live anywhere, including Judea and Samaria.

Huckabee, who once said he supports the notion of a Palestinian state in Egypt or Saudi Arabia, has long been a vocal proponent of Israel, and of Jews’ right to reside anywhere within the Jewish state.

“I am thrilled to be accompanying the Governor on this politically significant and extremely important trip,” Hikind said. “His presence will certainly strengthen the residents who are facing the possibility of eviction due to President Obama’s incessant pressure on the Israeli government to dismantle Jewish settlements.”

Hikind and Huckabee will be joining Dr. Joseph Frager, Chairman of American Friends of Ateret Cohanim and the facilitator of this trip, as well as Mr. Rubin Margules, Zionist Organization of America Brooklyn Regional President. The itinerary includes visits to Jerusalem’s Old City, Ma’aleh Adumim, and Hebron, among other locations.

Hikind is in the process of rolling out a major campaign to bring thousands of American Jews to Judea and Samaria in mid-November to show support to the affected settlers.

Comment from the next post:

To the guy who asked,"Is Rav Zelik a gadol?":

Rav Zelik was certainly a gadol. A gadol by requirement is a human being, not a malach. After every drink, you say, Borai Nefashos Rabos V'Chesronan, Hashem created many human being, and their faults. All human beings have faults. Rav Zelik made mistakes too, but that is human. No matter how great any gadol is, money blinds the judgements of the wise. It's a fact of life, and is warned about in the Torah.

I USED to be a major supporter of Sha'ar Hatorah. I looked up to Rav Zelik, and USED to feel it was a zechus to support the yeshiva. Until, I was made aware of one mistake in judgement. One mistake, was one too many.

Anger at Torah Leadership

by Rabbi Dovid E. Eidensohn

The Internet is filled with anger at Torah leadership. Recently, some prominent Torah scholars have taken to present their opinions about the Internet, and this simply made things hotter. There is a cycle to the situation. Someone does something or says something that offends certain rabbis. The rabbis respond, and this stokes the fires instead of calming things. There are many Torah Jews on the Internet, but it seems at times that the anger is greater than the love and reverence we expect. Why? What is going on?

I have been angry at the Torah community for a generation. A new type of "gadol" took over after the European greats died. A new kind of Torah Judaism is alive in the world. I hate it. I fought it in my seforim, in brochures and letters to the community, even on the radio. I did this not because I rebel against Gedolim, but because I was very close to them, and they were upset but silent, and I will not be silent.

I once opened my mouth full blast in a shul in Jerusalem in front of a close relative of a great Gadol. He was very puzzled and upset, because I was a talmid of his relative. At first he made faces and mumbled and finally his puzzlement changed to a broad smile. A wise man, he did not tell me directly why he now understood. He hinted from a Torah peshat on Chumash that Shimon and Levi did what Yaacov wanted done, even though it was a horrible thing to do. I don't say that this is what I meant, but my point is that he realized I was saying what great people could not. If they would say it the world would come to an end. If I say it, whoever wants to listen, fine, and if not, no damage is done.

What do I hate? Here is a list:

2500 girls aged 25 on a Shadchon's list. Other shadchonim won't take a girl because it is a waste of his time.

A bas talmid chochom is rejected, by the Rosh Yeshiva's "daas Torah" in favor of a rich baal habos. The Shulchan Aruch quotes the gemora that one must sell everything to marry a bas Talmid Chochom.

A girl is taught to marry a great scholar, but the great scholar's rebbe tells him to marry someone rich.

Everyone must be a gadol. Whoever works is a failure. The gemora and Shulchan Aruch say just the opposite.

Everyone must take after marriage and not earn. Rambam, Rabbeinu Yona and Rashi say that if you take you have no Olam Habo.

Parents ready to retire must fork over fortunes to support the "jewel" who learns and doesn't work. "Everyone" must go to kollel, which is against the Shulchan Aruch and destroys many men, their working wives, and children who have no mother. It also destroys the desperate parents who have to pay sometimes by selling their homes.

This spiritual sewage produces no gedolim. But it gets worse and worse.

Learn, don't work, and take government programs. This again is a violation of the Talmud and Shulchan Aruch.

The Talmud says, "A child not taught to earn will be a thief." Do we just say rip off the parents and trust in HaShem? What happens then?

The divorce situation is a disaster, and will surely lead to mamzerut. But there is nobody to talk to about it.

Kashruth for a baal nefesh will end in a few years due to genetic engineering and the absence of mirsas in global food companies. Nobody cares....... ( mirsas is defined as fear of getting caught by inspectors for using non-kosher products -since the vast majority of food and chemical companies do not have mashgichim t'midim- or supervisors on the premises at all-UOJ)

Family and marriage are torn to shreds by "daas Torah."

There are many people out there who don't articulate things this way, but they are getting angrier all of the time.

The Torah world is a can of gasoline, and I want to throw in the match.

Rav Eidensohn has written seforim with haskomos from Rav Moshe Feinstein, Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky, and Rav Wosner. He learned with Rav Ahron Kotler, Rav Moshe Feinstein, and other undisputed gedolei Torah.

I heard a rumor that he was just put in cherem by the Badatz of Lakewood. I am waiting to get my hands on the official statement.

All of his websites are now shut down after he lied for months to everyone about their money. The Better Business Bureau under the listing of Decorative Hardware Direct and HomeAnnex.com say they had hundreds of complaints from customers.

Neiman has been telling everyone that Ben Wilhelm of Lakewood stole over $100,000 from him. Wilhelm is originally from Toronto and I thought he lives in Marine Park, Brooklyn. The BBB lists Wilhelm's cellphone number 917-807-3197 as connected to the business. When you call, there is a voice message from Mrs. Wilhelm saying he is not connected to Yossi Neiman and to leave them alone.

Does anyone know Ben Wilhelm and his side of the story?

In a rare move, the Kalever Rebbe Shlita spoke with the media, granting an interview with Kikar Shabbat.

The Rebbe this week met with Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, a meeting that was reported in the secular media and the chareidi media after a small group of chareidi males targeted the mayor with rocks as he exited from the meeting with the Rebbe. The interview was conducted the day following the rock-throwing incident.

The Rebbe states he does not speak on behalf of anyone but himself, stressing he is not at odds with Gedolei Yisrael but feels a need to share his position, based on decades of contact and work with the non-frum community. The Rebbe stresses that he attempts to follow in the footsteps of the Avos, once again, based on some 50 years of experience working to bring non-frum Jews back to shmiras hamitzvos.

He speaks of the need to approach secularists with love and concern, explaining these are people who never learned and therefore, simply do not know, requiring patience and a genuine caring.

Regarding the rock attack against the mayor when he left the meeting, the Rebbe stated he did not see the event but added, “Sadly, it does not help the situation”. He added that rocks, sticks and shouting have never accomplished anything, stressing the need to proceed with love and affection.

The Rebbe confirmed that it was he who requested to meet with the mayor, and they discussed matters pertaining to shabbos, education and housing for the chareidi tzibur. “I spoke with him about shabbos - to do everything he can for shabbos in the city, on perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust and housing for chareidim. He is willing to do everything possible. I spoke of the need for 20,000-30,000 housing units for avreichim, at affordable prices. There is a plan for 20,000 units, 4,500 a year.”

The Rebbe added that following the mayor’s election victory, he telephoned him to wish the new mayor success, reminding him that much Jewish blood was spilled for the Holy City and he must remain conscious of this and act accordingly.

In keeping with the Rebbe’s way, tolerance, and an outstretched hand towards unity, following the meeting the Rebbe sent a letter to Barkat thanking him for the meeting and the willingness to discuss matters pertaining to the Holy City.

Rishon Lezion Chief Rabbi Yehuda David Wolpe refused to issue a marriage license for a couple living in his city because the bride's conversion - performed under the auspices of the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate of Israel - was deemed to be unkosher.

This is the second time in less than a month that Wolpe has refused to honor a marriage after the wedding took place.

In the latest case, the woman, who immigrated to Israel under the Law of Return but who was not Jewish according to Orthodox Jewish criteria, converted to Judaism two years ago.

The conversion was performed by the State Conversion Authority under the auspices of the Chief Rabbinate. However, Wolpe reached the conclusion that the woman was not sincere about embracing Judaism.

Shas chief's little-known role in Benizri corruption case

By Gidi Weitz, Haaretz Correspondent

Interior Minister and Shas chairman Eli Yishai launched a high-profile public campaign this week aimed at persuading President Shimon Peres to pardon former minister Shlomo Benizri, a Shas party colleague who was recently sentenced to four years in prison for bribe-taking, fraud, breach of trust, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit a crime.

What is less well-known, however, is that the trial court found Yishai himself was personally involved in one of the incidents for which Benizri was convicted.

Haredi Leaders Have Spoken Out On Scandal

by Rabbi David Zwiebel
Special To The Jewish Week

In the wake of the much-publicized recent arrests of several Orthodox Jews, including five rabbis, by federal authorities, Mark Charendoff (“‘Good’ Jews, Bad Choices”, Opinion, July 31) poses a most painful question: “Is it possible that there is something in the Orthodox community in general and the haredi community in particular that creates fertile ground for this type of fraud?”

Charendoff, himself an Orthodox Jew, goes on to decry the “perverse notion that we who feel bound by the laws of God are free to flout the laws of man.” He wonders, “Is it really possible that we, as Orthodox Jews, believe that we can create better societies and more caring communities by avoiding raspberries for fear they may have bugs in them while
not holding ourselves to even the basic standards of law and decency? Is it really possible that we believe we are in greater danger from women appearing at the pulpit then from rabbis appearing in a perp walk?”

About the recent events, he asks, “But where is the outrage? Where are the haredi leaders jumping up to protest? Where are the public vigils or the excommunications?”

Much of Charendoff’s cry from the heart is on target. Whether or not the haredi community is more prone to unlawful conduct than the rest of the Jewish community or the rest of the world, clearly there are serious problems that need to be addressed, and we dare not bury our heads in the sand. However, when Charendoff wonders why haredi leaders are silent about the problem, he is simply misinformed.
Anyone paying attention over the last few weeks would surely know that the arrests — and the larger issue of personal and business integrity in the haredi community — have been the subject of unflinching sermons in haredi shuls, soul-searching articles in the haredi press and serious conversations among haredi Jews (admittedly, there have been no excommunications).

Perhaps most dramatically, there was a massive gathering in Borough Park the Tuesday night before Tisha b’Av — five days after the arrests — that brought what the Forward described as “an overflow crowd of thousands” to a large hall for a three-hour symposium on the topic of the Torah’s commandment to every Jew: “V’asita hayashar v’hatov: and you shall do that which is straight and good.” (It is surprising that The Jewish Week has given this event no coverage.)

The program that night, which I was privileged to chair, opened with a wrenching mea culpa from a chasidic leader who has pleaded guilty to financial crimes relating to his group’s educational institutions; he implored the crowd to learn from his mistakes. The next two speakers were prominent haredi rabbis — one Ashkenazi, the other Sephardi — whose fiery and eloquent denunciations of financial wrongdoing minced no words. The evening’s two final speakers were prominent criminal defense attorneys, who spelled out some of the details of the money-laundering statutes and provided a secular legal perspective on the issues at hand.

Zweibel part 2 said...

As a follow-up to the Borough Park gathering, and in response to numerous requests from haredi institutions and individuals, Agudath Israel is planning a series of workshops for yeshivas, shuls and tzedakah funds about some of the basics of the law: both the law of Torah and the law of the land. There are, moreover, individual community initiatives in the haredi world to promote greater fiscal transparency in charitable organizations and ensure compliance with all applicable laws. Some of the finest minds and most influential leaders of haredi Jewry are involved in these and related efforts.

These developments are significant and noteworthy. They serve as eloquent rejoinders to those who contend that the haredi community and its leaders are closing their eyes to the problems that need to be addressed. Mark Charendoff and other critics, please pay attention.

What is especially troubling about Charendoff’s essay, though, is his mocking contrast of observance of kashrut and synagogue laws with casual attitudes regarding financial laws. He seems as perturbed by the former meticulousness as he is with the latter laxity. He appears not to understand that respecting the letter and spirit of the law is demanded of Jews equally in every realm.

Our sages teach that the mitzvot are divided into two broad categories: bein adam la’Makom, those that are between man and God, and bein adam la’chaveiro, those between man and his fellow man. Both categories, though, are part of an organic spiritual whole. When we received the Torah at Sinai, we accepted both tablets equally: our obligations to our Creator, and our obligations to one another.
There is nothing wrong — indeed everything right — with insisting that Jews adhere to Jewish and civil law, and to standards of plain menschlichkeit, in carrying out their obligations to others and to the government. Charendoff is to be commended for doing so, though it would behoove him to recognize that the large majority of the haredi community and its leadership are right there with him.

But hold the raspberries, please. Mocking a fellow Jew’s punctiliousness in the area of bein adam la’Makom is hardly the best way to promote improvement in the area of bein adam la’chaveiro. As we prepare to enter Elul, the last month of the Jewish calendar year and the preface to the High Holy Days, let’s recognize that introspection and repentance in all areas of Jewish life are the order of the day.

Jackson’s Cadillac Escalade swung out of the Carolwood Drive house and, in less than 3km, reached 435 North Roxbury Drive, Beverly Hills.

Wearing a wig and the usual caked on make up, Jackson made this journey three times a week in the last six months of his life. He would spend up to three or four hours in suite 204, the rooms of dermatologist to the stars, Arnie Klein.

The skin specialist, who began treating the star for severe acne 25 years earlier, said Jackson had literally danced into his office that day.

"He was in very good physical condition," Klein told CNN’s Larry King in a lengthy interview.

So what had changed from the patient in trouble the night before? Nothing was clear. Like the question of how many doctors Jackson was actually seeing. Rumour says many, but other sources say Klein appeared to have been the only doctor whom Jackson visited after the singer moved back to Los Angeles from Las Vegas in September 2008.

Klein, 64, a gay multi millionaire whose father was a rabbi, is one of the more famous and popular of Beverly Hills’ plastic fantastic doctors.

"I invented lips" is one of his more famous lines. He was one of the first to use lip augmentation back in 1984. Klein earns up to $US20,000 a day from giving Botox injections alone and that’s only one quarter of his practice.

But Jackson was far from a walking billboard for any dermatologist. He was virtually bald as a result of the auto immune disease lupus and the accident in 1984 when his hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi ad. And his fragile face was distorted by years of cosmetic surgery, which
destroyed the cartilage in his nose.

Klein said Jackson turned to surgery because family members had joked about his wide nose.
Denying that the end of Jackson’s nose had become so thin it had dropped off, Klein said he was helping Jackson "regain" his breathing passages. "Contrary to what people said, he could not take off his nose. His nose was attached but it looked too small," Klein said.

As Jackson lay back on one of the beds in Klein’s rooms during his thrice weekly visits, he was given regular injections of Restylane and other fillers in his cheeks and nose and Botox in his forehead and around his eyes for about $US3500 $4260 a pop.

Klein was also a close friend and adviser to the star. Jackson spent his last Christmas with Klein who impressed the Jackson kids by inviting along his friend, Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, to entertain them.

He knew Jackson better than many in the singer’s own family, such as Jackson’s overpowering father Joe, who had not had his son’s private phone number for five years.

And Klein’s former nurse, Debbie Rowe, was also the mother of Jackson’s two oldest children.

For some reason he then felt it necessary to add his opinion to one of the greatest mysteries in Jackson’s life. Did Jackson and Debbie Rowe consummate their relationship? "I think they did have sex," he said. "Yes, I really do, (but) I can’t guarantee that."

Why was the case of the mother accused of starving her son handed over to the police? What do police investigators have to do with the personality disorders of a sick woman, who happens to be five-month pregnant?

These sick people need professional help and can be dangerous to those who are dependent on them.

They therefore need to be removed from their loved-ones as long as they are unaware of their problem and as long as it is not being treated.

This is exactly what the welfare services are there for: To provide proper care in such cases, including issuing restraining orders when a person is deemed dangerous to those around him.

So, why was the case handed over to the police? What do police investigators have to do with the personality disorders of a sick woman, who happens to be five-month pregnant? What will they be investigating exactly? Why is the treatment of this woman not being handled by the welfare authorities, which are the natural, legal branch for treating her?

And, should the need arise, the welfare services have the authority to ask he court for a restraining order. In the event such an order is violated, the police can always be brought into the picture.

Why were the police waiting for her upon leaving the welfare offices, contrary to the position of mental health officials, and arrested her in front of the press? Where are the women's organizations when it comes to haredim? Where are the human rights groups?

WARSAW, Poland - When Rabbi Aaron Katz walks the streets of Warsaw’s former Jewish quarter, scenes of that lost world fill his imagination: Families headed to synagogue, women in their kitchens cooking Sabbath meals, his father as a boy with the sidecurls of an Orthodox Jew.

But Katz’s life could hardly be more different from that prewar eastern European culture, at least in one key respect: He is Poland’s first openly gay rabbi.

Born in Argentina 53 years ago to parents who fled Poland before the Holocaust, Katz is the latest rabbi to play his part in reviving a once vibrant Jewish community that was all but wiped out by Hitler.

He settled into Warsaw’s historic Jewish district in March with Kevin Gleason, a former Hollywood producer on such reality TV shows as "The Bachelor" and "Nanny 911," with whom he entered into a registered domestic partnership in Los Angeles two years ago.

They live only three streets from the birth home of Katz’s father in a modern and spacious apartment with their dogs, two gentle brown boxers. Katz says he is moved by the links to his past, but keeps his focus on the future.

"I don’t think we will come back to this great Jewish life," he said, referring to prewar Poland, a country where one person in 10 was Jewish and where synagogues, yeshivas and shtetls defined the landscape. "But I hope we will have a normal Jewish life in Poland."

Katz is certainly an anomaly in conservative Poland, where to be either Jewish or gay is challenge enough - at least outside the cities. Of a population of 38 million, about 5,000 are registered as Jews, while thousands more have part-Jewish ancestry, and some have returned to their roots since Poland shed its communist dictatorship.

Katz is the second rabbi to serve Beit Warszawa, a Reform community with 250 members that was founded in the capital 10 years ago by Polish and American Jews who felt little affinity with some Orthodox practices, such as separating men and women during Sabbath services. The Reform movement ordains gay rabbis.

Homosexuals have won acceptance at differing levels throughout post-communist Eastern Europe. The Czech Republic and Slovenia recognize same-sex partnerships, as will Hungary from July 1. Poland hasn’t gone that far. It has an active gay rights movement and gay nightclubs in the cities, but the Catholic church and some conservative politicians still publicly describe homosexuality as abnormal and immoral.

Katz, a citizen of Argentina, Israel and Sweden, says so far he has not faced anti-Semitism or homophobia in Poland. But some community members, speaking in private, reveal a degree of discomfort.

One woman at a Sabbath service whispered that she found Katz’s open sexuality too "aggressive." A longtime male member counseled against writing about the rabbi, lest anti-Semites use it against the community.

Katz’s life as a rabbi has been an evolution from one world to another. In the 1980s and early 1990s he was Sweden’s chief Orthodox rabbi, married to a woman with whom he had five children now aged 16 to 31. Later he lived and worked in Berlin and Los Angeles. He had a dark beard, but today is clean-shaven.

The only photograph in their living room shows Katz and Gleason on the day they sealed their partnership - which they refer to as a marriage - surrounded by both their families, including Katz’s sons and daughters, who are close to the couple and who showed their acceptance of the union with a gift of a ketubah, a traditional Jewish wedding certificate.

Katz’s journey away from Orthodox Judaism was part of his "coming out process," he explains, but also was influenced by the realization that some of his children were not attracted to Orthodox worship. He concluded that Reform Judaism was more attractive to the young.

A former chief United Nations weapons inspector is accused of contacting what he thought was a 15-year-old girl in an Internet chat room, engaging in a sexual conversation and showing himself masturbating on a Web camera.
Scott Ritter of Delmar, N.Y., who served as chief U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991-98 and who was an outspoken critic of the second Bush administration in the run-up to the war in Iraq, is accused of contacting what turned out to be a Barrett Township police officer posing undercover as a teen girl.

According to the police affidavit (it contains "extremely graphic content," according to the Record, which links to it here), Ritter allegedly signed on to an Internet chat room under the name "Delmarm4fun" and chatted with Officer Ryan Venneman, who claimed to be 15-year-old "Emily." The 48-year-old Ritter, too, apparently shaved some years off his age. Police say he purported to be just 44.

Ritter allegedly asked "Emily" for a photo, though the affidavit does not say if Venneman supplied one. At this point, according to the complaint, Ritter began his lewd performance, although he hesitated:

Ritter again asked "Emily" how old she was. Told she was 15, Ritter said he didn't realize she was 15 and turned off his webcam, saying he didn't want to get in trouble.
Ritter told "Emily" he had been fantasizing about having sex with her, to which she replied: "Guess you turned it off . . ."

Ritter then said: "You want to see it finish," reactivated his webcam and continued . . .

We're too squeamish to quote the remainder of that last sentence.

So we are sheep. We are followers of the glib. We don't penetrate or allow ourselves to be penetrated by the truth. We look for what's easy, minimal effort, couch potato Judaism. We've created a welfare state of mind, not just a welfare state. We get lambasted for deriding the what has become a farce; a parody of leadership. We listen to pontifications of self aggrandizing puppets who have sold out to the dollar that is made and held by bigger despots. Who really holds the reigns of Judaism today? Is it really the Agudath Israel? Is it really the rebbes? Maybe it's us. Maybe we are self destructive with our welfare state of mind. We are surrounded by deceptive menuvils who have agendas and backers. They manipulate the "polls" (otherwise known as kol korehs). For the right money influence is peddled and overwhelmed, naive and often mislead rabbis are coerced into signing because the gelt is too good.
It's the 80/20 rule. 20% of Judaism is leading 80% of the Jews around by the nose. Menuvilim get positions because they will turn a blind eye and deaf ear on issues that will adversely affect their backers. It's not religion, this is politics. Tammany Hall type politics. We've overshot the Chumash and Rashi and now our Torah fix has to be greater, more bang for the buck. So we are willing to pay those who will tell as we want to hear it. Go around and see how many shtellar rabbis will go along with the mob. Go and see how many rosh yeshivahs will silently acquiesce to stay in business another day. It's politics, it's business. You have to lie and cheat to keep afloat.
So where is the issue, look in the mirror. We all kvell over the best athlete, the fastest runner, we don't want to be associated with losers. Losers are not popular. Winners are popular and they feed into our vicarious desires. We want to be glib, successful, smart, authoritative, influential and if not we want to buy the ability to be close to those attributes.
So we hire blond haired blue eyed dolls to sell our services and goods because our thick accents and funny clothes don't fit in with the business. We don't believe that our ability is as important as our package. We've bought the bull. We don't need no edukatshun, but we need to sell the notion that we are sofistikated. So we buy into it. Why not our religious leadership? Just buy the look, style over substance. Send them to Israel, to Madison Square Garden. Listen to the ushers gush over the silent shmoneh esrai at the Garden. But at the local shul, you can't hear chazoras hashatz. We've become the erev rav. We don't want to be matriach in Judaism anymore. We want surrogates. We buy them.
For those of us that are do it yourselfers - we are the enigma, the danger. If we can show that we have the right stuff, then the style will have to have substantiation. We need to lead as individuals and to stop being sheep. We need to accept the derision of Pinchas and then rise to the occasion. We need to find and walk the middle way of Judaism. That's the attraction of Judaism, the middle way. No one reading this or other blogs is incapable of following Hashem in the way that Hashem intended to be followed. The middle way, not extremes.
Can we change the downward spiral of Judaism? Yes, one Jew at a time. Pick one practice that you know is shvach and improve it one day at a time. Every Rosh Hashonah do that. Remember and take chizuk from the fact that Moshe Rabbeinu had failings too. He didn't rest on his position as a Gadol to not seek out continous improvement, one step at a time. It has been a constant exhortation to improve, but really not to stand still. Jews have come to a stand still and like a shark in the water being at a stand still is certain death. We must be constantly moving, preferably closer to the real ratzon of Hashem (maybe I'll opine on that someday). Move Yidden. Don't die the stylish death of a mindless follower.

Despite the arrest warrant and psych reports from GA, and the overwhelming evidence (from Toronto JFS) that he also molested boys in Toronto Bnai Sephardim youth director, Amram Bendahan still has not been fired.

In fact only two members of the Board of Directors of Bnai Sephardim (Toladano and his brother in law Levy) expressed any concern that a man wanted for a felony child abuse in GA was in direct unsupervised contact with the community's children.

Bendahan was however fired from NCSY.

No other ‘rabbi’ will ever act against another ‘rabbi’ - even when he knows his colleague is clearly desecrating the Torah. Each rabbi is only worried about losing his own position.

Therefore, the ‘rabbi’ and ‘dayan’ will never effect justice. And he will never truly stand for the Torah or the Honour of Hashem. His pocket will always prevail.

The Torah must never be used for commercial gain and profit. Am Yisrael can only be lead by those who have the necessary love and respect of Hashem and the Torah.

3. The ‘dayan’ and ‘rabbi’ may shame a Jew in public, even repeatedly. This is one of the most vile acts of murder in Jewish law – and they know this.

4. The ‘dayan’ and ‘rabbi’ will not hesitate to use Lashon Hara - the ‘Evil Tongue’ - to suit his own ends. Slander and gossip. This too, is one of the worst acts of murder in Jewish Law. Their slander is never challenged by the community, because they hold positions of power. And the slander may begin with the Rebbetzin herself.

5. The ‘dayanim’ and ‘rabbis’ worship idols and other gods. Their only god is Money. Especially the ‘Dayanim’ – the ‘Judges’ who sit on a Beit Din. They only care about their high incomes and retirement packages. They have little or no love for the Torah or Hashem.

In the case of Lubavitch/Chabad, all their rabbis are carrying out a form of Avodah Zarah – strange worship. They are using mediation and intercession. This is completely forbidden, and against the Torah. We are only allowed to pray to Hashem, directly ourselves.

6. When the NAME of Hashem has been taken in Vain – repeatedly - by reshaim, the ‘rabbi’ will turn a deaf ear and blind eye to the

CHILLUL HASHEM.

This is the abhorrent behaviour of a Pig.

This is an extremely severe and dangerous situation.

There is NO forgiveness for this evil sin and aveirah.

7. The ‘dayan’ and ‘rabbi’ may also offer large bribes, tell lies and bring False Witnesses – when he in fact has committed the crime. These are heinous acts of the most despicable kind. This is especially vile when the ‘dayan’ is sitting on a ‘Bet Din.’

8. The ‘rabbi’ may commit adultery. And when he gets divorced, he may spread slander about his own ex-wife, blackening her name – when in fact he was at fault.

9. The ‘dayan’ and ‘rabbi’ may also desecrate Shabbat – if it suits him. He will use physical violence to assault another Jew or Jewess at any time. This evil and venomous behaviour is 100% against the Torah.

A second federal judge ruled on Monday that it had been unconstitutional for Congress to enact a health care law that requires Americans to obtain commercial insurance

Judge Roger Vinson of Federal District Court in Pensacola, Fla., ruled that the entire health care act should fall if the appellate courts join him in invalidating the insurance requirement.

“The Act, like a defectively designed watch, needs to be redesigned and reconstructed by the watchmaker,” Judge Vinson wrote.

In a 78-page opinion, Judge Vinson held that the insurance requirement exceeds the regulatory powers granted to Congress under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. Judge Vinson wrote that the provision could not be rescued by an associated clause in Article I that gives Congress broad authority to make laws “necessary and proper” to carrying out its designated responsibilities.

“If Congress can penalize a passive individual for failing to engage in commerce, the enumeration of powers in the Constitution would have been in vain,” Judge Vinson wrote.

The judge’s ruling came in the most prominent of more than 20 legal challenges to some aspect of the sweeping health law, which was enacted last year by a Democratic Congress and signed by President Obama in March.

The plaintiffs include governors and attorneys general from 26 states, as well as the National Federation of Independent Business, which represents small companies. Officials from six states joined the lawsuit this month after shifts in party control brought by last November’s elections.

Reminds me of the (probably false) police report filed by disgraced CBS News anchor Dan Rather that he was punched and kicked in his Upper East Side parking garage by an unknown assailant who was screaming: "Kenneth, what's the frequency?"

Filed at 5:06 p.m. EST

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A former engineer for defense contractor ITT Corp. has admitted stealing a piece of radio equipment that has military applications and selling it online.

Union City, N.J., resident Vincent Corey was charged in November with stealing a $50,000 frequency generator. The generator is used as a tester in the manufacture of other items to mimic radio frequencies of surface-to-air missiles.

The U.S. attorney's office says Corey used his Department of Defense clearance to steal the generator, then used a fake name to sell it to another company on eBay for $20,000.

Corey pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Newark on Monday to interstate transportation and transmission of stolen property. The count carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

Dan Rather resign! said...

On October 4, 1986, as Dan Rather was walking along Park Avenue in Manhattan to his apartment, he claimed he was attacked & punched from behind by a man who demanded to know, "Kenneth, what's the frequency?", while a second assailant also chased & beat him. As the assailant pummeled & kicked Rather, he kept repeating the question over & over again.

In describing the incident, Rather said, "I got mugged. I wish I knew who did it & why, but I have no idea."

The incident & Rather's account led some to doubt the veracity of Rather's story. The story entered popular lore. The incident inspired a song called "Kenneth, What's the Frequency?" by the band Game Theory in 1987. In 1994 the band R.E.M. released the song "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" on the album Monster. The phrase became the subject of many jokes over the years & slang for a confused or clueless person.

On September 8, 2004, Rather reported on "60 Minutes" that a series of memos critical of President George W. Bush's National Guard service had been discovered in the files of Lt. Bush's former commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian. The authenticity of these documents was quickly called into question by a small group of bloggers, initially based on their being proportionally printed & displaying other modern typographic conventions with limited availability on typewriters of the time. This led to claims that the memos were forgeries in mainstream media outlets including The Washington Post, New York Times & Chicago Sun-Times.

CBS initially defended the story, insisting that the documents had been authenticated by experts. CBS was then contradicted by some of the experts it cited.

The controversy has been referred to as "Rathergate."

Following an investigation, CBS fired story producer Mary Mapes & asked 3 other producers connected with the story to resign. Many believe Rather's "retirement" was hastened by this incident. Rather was interviewed on Larry King Live commenting "Nobody has proved that they were fraudulent, much less a forgery ... The truth of this story stands up to this day."

On September 19, 2007, Rather filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS, its parent company Viacom, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, Sumner Redstone, chairman of both Viacom & CBS and Andrew Heyward, former president of CBS News. Rather accused the network & its ownership & management of making him a "scapegoat" in the Killian story. On September 21, 2009, Rather's lawyers claimed that Bush's military service would be proven to be a sham & Rather would be vindicated. On September 29, 2009, A New York state appeals court dismissed Rather's lawsuit. On January 12, 2010 New York's top court refused to reinstate Rather's $70 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against CBS.

Rather has since resumed his career with HDNet, a high-definition cable television station as a producer & hosts a weekly show called Dan Rather Reports. Rather also has contributed on The Chris Matthews Show & on The Daily Show.

A new sefer on Kiruv, a collection of many Maamorim of Rav Shach, zt"l is being published.

Rav Shach, zt"l had very clear guidelines for 'Avodas Hakiruv'.

There are many differences between the guidelines in Kiruv established by Gedolei Eretz Yisroel and the Gedolim in Chutz l'aretz, shlita.

The Gedolei Chutz l'aretz tend to have a more lenient approach about many issues related to Kiruv.

Hagaonim Hagadolim, Harav Ahron Feldman, Harav Shmuel Kaminetzky, the Noveminsker Rebbe, shlita are very involved in questions pertaining to Kiruv and view the questions from an American perspective.

Hagaonim Hagadolim, shlita Harav Ahron Schechter & Harav Elya Ber Wachtfogel have a consistent view with the Gedolei Ertz Yisroel on most issues related to Kiruv."

Thus spake Tropper, der "menuval shebemenuvalim" as Rabbi Rakefet labeled him berabim.

Maybe this is connected to Tropper's latest trip, in an effort to reinsert himself and reincarnate himself and make himself relevant all over again as "the man" and shaliach of "Gedolei Ertz Yisroel" (from America and Israel, meaning fanatics who don't have a clue about truly humane kiruv) to allow Tropper to continue making the mischief he's known for under a new umbrella."

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — A ring of identity thieves used stolen credit card information to buy Macbooks, iPods & iPhones at Apple stores across the country, stealing nearly $1 million in electronics for black market resale, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The New York-based ring, which was 27 people strong, was nabbed after a lengthy investigation by the United States Secret Service & the Manhattan District Attorney.
They manufactured phony plastic using account information stolen from 1000s of victims & created counterfeit cards between May 2009 & December 2010, prosecutors said in court Tuesday.

Each of their purchases ranged from several hundred dollars to about $3,000. They sent buyers to stores in New York and New Jersey & cities nationwide including Las Vegas, Indianapolis, Orlando & Atlanta.

Several of the defendants received, sent & stored stolen credit card information using Yahoo e-mail accounts, the indictment says.

Another defendant, Gil Einhorn, 26, was allegedly the main buyer of the stolen Apple products, prosecutors said.

He was allegedly caught on surveillance buying "large bundles" of stolen goods, Roper said.

Einhorn's lawyer, Steven Kartagener, said the life-long Brooklyn resident is a "fundamentally decent man" who will be vindicated. He was ordered held on $500,000 bail.

Financial Disarray at S.E.C. Hurts Bid for Bigger Budget

Since the commission began producing audited statements in 2004, the Government Accountability Office has faulted its reporting almost every year. Last November, the G.A.O. said that the commission’s books were in such disarray that it had failed at some of the agency’s most fundamental tasks: accurately tracking income from fines, filing fees and the return of ill-gotten profits.

Representative Spencer T. Bachus, the Alabama Republican who is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said last week that the tripling of the S.E.C.’s budget occurred in a period that included some of the agency’s biggest failures — the Ponzi schemes of Bernard L. Madoff and R. Allen Stanford and the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers.

Peace Corps Gang Rape: Volunteer Says U.S. Agency Ignored Warnings

ABC News Investigation Finds More Than 1,000 Rapes, Sexual Assaults Since 2000

BY ANNA SCHECTER AND BRIAN ROSS
Jan. 12, 2011

More than 1,000 young American women have been raped or sexually assaulted in the last decade while serving as Peace Corps volunteers in foreign countries, an ABC News 20/20 investigation has found.

In some cases, victims say, the Peace Corps has ignored safety concerns and later tried to blame the women who were raped for bringing on the attacks.

"I have two daughters now and I would never ever let them join the Peace Corps," said Adrianna Ault Nolan of New York, who was raped while serving in Haiti.

She is one of six rape and sexual assault victims who agreed to tell their stories, in hopes the Peace Corps will do a better job of volunteer training and victim counseling. The report will be broadcast Friday night on 20/20.

In the most brutal attack, Jess Smochek, 29, of Pennsylvania was gang raped in Bangladesh in 2004 by a group of young men after she says Peace Corps officials in the country ignored her pleas to re-locate her.

She says the Peace Corps immediately began to cover up what happened to her, fearful, she says, of offending officials in Bangladesh.

One judge who was driving drunk led the police on a half-mile chase, and when he was pulled over, asked for “professional courtesy.”

Another said “good boy” when a man who wanted to file a lawsuit made an insulting comment about Jews.

A third repeatedly jailed people without any trial and talked at length from the bench about how the decoration on a woman’s T-shirt made him think of a male sex organ. “I’m bringing down the house,” said the judge, Gilbert L. Abramson of Family Court in Saratoga County, evidently delighted with his own humor.

Those are a few of the cases that were handled over the last year by a secretive state agency, the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct

The commission, which operates behind closed doors, removed only one judge in 2010, Judge Abramson of the Saratoga Family Court, who, according to the commission, made comments about the woman’s T-shirt that “were ribald and replete with sexual innuendo.”

Two judges resigned while under investigation, including the town court justice in western New York who said “good boy” after the derogatory comment about Jews and another town court judge who the commission found had failed to sentence more than 100 convicted people.

Twelve judges were censured or admonished last year, including one who delayed resolving cases for up to five years, another who refused to handle cases until he received a pay increase, and one who threatened a man with jail for being rude to the judge’s wife.

Apartment scam developer Eliyahu Ezagui says rebbe backed him

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011/01/18/2011-01-18_brooklyn_developer_eliyahu_ezagui_gets_33_months_in_prison_for_fraudulent_mortag.html

A Brooklyn developer got a slap on the wrist Tuesday for masterminding a massive fraudulent mortgage scheme that left dozens of Lubavitcher residents in fear of losing their condo apartments.

Eliyahu Ezagui was sentenced to 33 months in prison for the scheme, which was first exposed by The Daily News in 2008 leading to his federal indictment.

Prosecutors asked Judge Frederic Block to give Ezagui 20 years for the multi-million-dollar fraud against mortgage lenders and apartment buyers.

Block said he saw the case differently -- ruling that Ezagui had perpetrated a fraud primarily against the lenders, although the judge acknowledged the buyers were victims, too.

"Twenty years is a sentence for rapists and murderers, not fraud like in this case," Block said.

Even under the judge's revised calculation of the financial losses caused by Ezagui's crimes, he could have still faced more than 10 years in prison.

Defense lawyer Susan Necheles had argued that Ezagui did not personally profit from the scheme that worked like this: He gave stolen deeds to family members in order to take out mortgage loans on apartments he did not own so he could fund construction costs.

Ezagui, 49, declined comment.

The newly standard line from big global banks has two components – as seen clearly in the statements of Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase and Robert E. Diamond Jr. of the British bank Barclays at Davos last weekend.

First, if you regulate us, we’ll move to other countries. And second, the public policy priority should not be banks but rather the spending cuts needed to get budget deficits under control in the United States, Britain and other industrialized countries.

This rhetoric is misleading at best. At worst it represents a blatant attempt to shake down the public purse.

Unfortunately, officials in the United States and those of the political right who seek public office – as well as much of the political left – still appear greatly in thrall to the big banks.

The chief rabbi of Amsterdam, Aryeh Ralbag, was temporarily relieved from his post Wednesday by the board of the Orthodox Jewish community, after he signed a document describing homosexuality as an inclination which “can be modified and healed.”

Ralbag, a US-born Orthodox rabbi nominated to head the Amsterdam community in 2005, had recently cosigned the document titled “Declaration On The Torah Approach To Homosexuality,” which called on “authority figures” to “guide same-sex strugglers towards a path of healing and overcoming their inclinations.”

“Rabbi Ralbag’s signature may give the impression the Orthodox Jewish community of Amsterdam shares his view,” a press release by the community’s board, known the NIHS, read. “This is absolutely untrue. Homosexuals are welcome at the Amsterdam Jewish community.”

Ronnie Eisenmann, chairperson of the board, added: “The community regrets that the chief rabbi cosigned this document and distances itself from this view.” He also offered “heartfelt apologies to anyone who may have been hurt by the rabbi’s signature.”

“The board has decided to (temporarily) relieve the chief rabbi from his duties, in any case until he travels to Amsterdam to discuss the issue.”

Esther Voet, former editor-in-chief of Dutch Jewish weekly Nieuw Israëlietisch Weekblad, supported the decision to relieve Ralbag of his duties. “I think it’s the only right position because the policies of rabbi Ralbag have come repeatedly under scrutiny for a while now.”

Voet, currently vice-director of CIDI - the Dutch Jewish community’s watchdog on anti-Semitism – said there was a cultural gap between the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community of Brooklyn and the relatively liberal Dutch Orthodox community. Her organization called on Ralbag to step down as chief rabbi on Tuesday, following his signature on the document.

“The Dutch Jewish neshoma (soul) is unique. We have special rules, like waiting only one hour before eating meat and dairy. We need a chief rabbi who is aware of our traditions and that’s something you cannot fly in two times a year,” she said.

(Reuters) - Lawyers for Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman faced a hearing on Tuesday where they argued against his being indicted on graft charges that would force his resignation and could trigger early Israeli elections.

Justice officials announced last April that Lieberman, an outspoken rightwinger who heads the ultranationalist Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel is Our Home) coalition party, faced possible charges of fraud, money laundering and witness tampering.

Prosecutors suspect Lieberman of using shell companies and third-party accounts to receive more than $1.2 million illicitly while in public office, including from foreign businessmen with interests in Israel.

Lieberman, who denies wrongdoing, is on an overseas trip and will not attend the hearing headed by Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein that could last two days.

Israeli media said his attorneys denied at Tuesday's session that Lieberman had any links to shell companies during his time in public office.

The attorney-general could take several more months before deciding whether to put the minister on trial.

If Lieberman is charged, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be required to dismiss him from his government.
