UOJ'S LETTER TO A RABBI.....

My entire life I've been battling corruption in the rabbinate in all its ugly forms, shapes and colors. There is no corruption that is worse than clergy corruption.

In business, as in life, if you're astute, you realize early on, that you will get hurt by people, generally the ones "closest" to you. That's because you naturally let your guard down with people you surround yourself with. That could be family members, business associates, fellow members of your community, etc. The hurt is often perpetrated because of the trust you bestowed on your "perceived" trustworthy relationship.

Rabbinic corruption is the absolute worst form of corruption that a Jew can experience. We expect people that having dedicated their life to preaching and "practicing" the wisdom of a Torah-observant life; to simply stated, practice what you preach. So when you discover that to be a misnomer, an absolute falsehood; that the rabbi gets to selectively choose what "they" will practice, many times at the expense of the law, truth, ethics, morals, and the Halacha, you rightfully have the duty to get enraged and go to every legal length to expose this evil, especially if it hides under the guise of Halacha and cloaked in black clothing and beard....

I recently read the book "The Wicked Son" by David Mamet. He is one very proud Jew.(and a highly successful Hollywood personality)

In one of the chapters he describes the "poor shul", the shul without any donor plaques on the wall. He boldly states that any shul that has donor plaques on the wall is not a shul, a house of God, because God does not give any more credence to the rich Jew who can afford to "buy" a plaque, and one that can not.

Basically, taking that thought one step further, the "gvir" or the rich guy, while he deserves credit for donating funds to the shul; but the fact that he has wealth, or has given money, does NOT make him a better Jew. It's the corruption factor that he alludes to, whether it be money or some other source of sense of power. More so, when the corruption comes to the fore in a coverup, knowing full-well that , not only have you "sinned", you will go to any length to cover it up and sin worse than the "original sin." It's the coverup that got Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton, Torah Umesorah, the Agudath Israel, Torah Temimah..........

Then we have rabbis, similar to the rabbis of the corrupt Agudath Israel, that will attempt to do anything at all to hide their attempts of coloring the truth, outright lying, creating illusions of truth; even to the extent of committing perjury in a court of law, if that's what it will take to coverup their flawed practices that are in violation of the laws of this great country, that has given us the freedom to practice our religion.

This is the issue I want to address.

Very recently I have come to know that a rabbi has performed a Kiddushin or a Jewish wedding ceremony for a couple, while the woman "was still married" to her first husband. The violation is clear. The rabbi sanctioned this marriage "under the laws of Moses and Israel" while the woman was committing bigamy in the eyes of the law of the United States of America.

This rabbi will be given the opportunity to come "clean", and admit that in fact that he subscribed to a system that is flawed and needs to be corrected. I am informed that this rabbi intends to participate, under penalty of perjury, in a massive coverup of his deeds and that ghastly process of Jewish law, that PERMITS AND SANCTIONS women to marry even though they have not been legally divorced from their previous husbands.

This rabbi, in the winter of his life, had to begin his rabbinical career anew, because he knowingly participated in a heinous coverup of other rabbinical crimes, which at this time, I choose not to disclose.

My message to this rabbi is the following:

Call Lipa Margulies, Yudi Kolko, Yisroel Belsky, Shea Fischman, Sheftel Neuberger, Moshe Eisemann, Shlomo Mandel, Yehuda Nussbaum, the Rebbe from Ger, A.M. Leizerowitz, A. Mondrowitz, Moshe Heinnemann, Yaakov Hopfer, Shmuel Kaminetzky, Mattisyahu Salomon, Yaakov Perlow, David Zweibel, Tzvi Berkowitz, CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, Fox News, New York Magazine, The Forward, The Brooklyn D.A., N.Y.P.D., The New York Post, The JTA, The Jewish Press, The Jewish Week, The Village Voice, The L.A. Times, The Jerusalem Post............ BEFORE you go into court and knowingly testify falsely under penalty of perjury!

The Ten Commandments, the last time I looked, considered "Thou Shall NOT Bear False Witness", right up there with "Thou Shall NOT Kill", "Thou Shall NOT Covet Your Neighbor's Wife", and "Observing the Shabbos."

The daring Rabbi Hershel Schachter has sanctioned taking to the Internet when lives are destroyed because of rabbi-molestation. Molesting the law and the truth to protect a "sin" that you committed, is rabbi-molestation. It is utter molestation of the Torah. It destroys lives and families. Call the tzaddik Rabbi Yosef Blau; verify my tenacity of going after the bad guys with a resolve that has been unmatched in recent Jewish history.

I have personally examined all the evidence; and at great personal expense and vast amounts of time, I consulted with the expert attorneys of the claimant. You have no chance of prevailing with your distortions. If you lie, even slightly, they will crucify you! They have been down this road before, and have destroyed the lie and the liar.

All I expect is that you tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! Let the chips fall where they may!

Rabbi, I mean you no harm. As I warned the previous rabbis prior to destroying them, I am giving you the opportunity to do right. Do right for the sake of Right, for the sake of mankind, for the sake of the Torah, for the sake of whatever is left of your rabbinical career, for the sake of the organization that you sit on the bais din of, for your family, for whatever is left of your family name, and most of all for society. When a member of the clergy lies intentionally under oath to a coverup of a "crime", especially after being warned against doing that, the only member of your new next congregation will be Jonathan Pollard.

If you lie, deceive, color or discolor the truth in any manner, I will use my considerable resources and whatever means is available to me to destroy whatever is left of your reputation and will see to it that you and the bigamist are criminally prosecuted.

YOU ARE WARNED!

UOJ,

We all need to be wary of kochi v'otzem yadi.

That being said, I'm wondering what possibly could be in violation of civil or criminal law? I assume that the woman in question has a get but no civil divorce. What criminal act is there for her to have a religious marriage ceremony before her civil divorce is final? I'm not a lawyer but it seems to me that the law only recognizes a religious marriage ceremony when it is performed subsequent to a civil marriage license. I just don't thing that legally this is bigamy.

As for the rabbi perjuring himself in related litigation, that's a different subject. Like you said it's the coverup that kills. Clinton got impeached over perjury, not the cigar or the blue dress.

Let me ask you, UOJ, what do you think about senior couples who have a chuppah but no civil marriage so they don't lose Social Security benefits? My ex once had an ob/gyn whose widowed mother had a boyfriend. They didn't want to live together without being married, but a civil marriage meant giving up some Social Security benefits. The families were traditionalist Conservative so the ob/gyn asked us if we knew of an ordained rabbi who would perform the ceremony. It turned out that a friend of mine, a musician of note who has smicha, lived in the same city and he was thrilled to do the wedding.

I can't see how this is wrong. As long as something doesn't technically violate the law it's not illegal.

UOJ,

I've long admired Mamet's work. He's also one of the few people in Hollywood that seem to see the world as it is. I had the opportunity to speak to him when he was on Dennis Prager's show and he gave me an interesting answer when I asked him if he got a negative reaction in Hollywood, in light of the fact that so many Jews in the entertainment business exhibit the self hatred he was speaking of. Mamet said that I misunderstood him, and that he didn't think that Jewish self hatred was a problem of self haters vs. non haters. Rather it is a problem that every Jew has to deal with, every one of us.

Unfortunately FCC rules prevented me from telling Mr. Mamet my favorite line from one of his movies:

My m&*herf*&er is so cool, sheep count him

Ronnie,

Good question. The rabbi acts or claims to have acted as an agent of the State with the authority to perform marriages. In that capacity, he comitted a crime by facilitating a "marriage" that is illegal, causing the new husband to sleep with a married woman.

Yosef Golding said...

I wonder if the rabbi getting UOJ's ultimatum has an internet connection and reads the blog.

There is a big difference! In the case of old an widow and an old widower, these people are not married to anybody else anymore. In both the eyes of the state and in the eyes of the Jewish law they are free to choose to get remarried or not; no stings attached. What they do in the eyes of the state is to choose NOT to get married, while in the eyes of the Jewish law the choose to actually do. The reason for that unomally is unjust and opressive tax laws that drive people to criminal acts. We all (except of super rich liberals) should yearn to abolish these laws.

In the case that UOJ describes, if I understand correctly such authorities as Rav Moshe Feinstein and others there are two problems: a) one is not really permitted to disregard the state even if unjust (which is applicable to the previous case as well, unfortunately.) And, more importnatly b) there is a still a doubt about the state of the woman and she could be considered still married to the previous husband, in which case she is not allowed to get married to a new man.

Mordechai Tendler said...

What's wrong with sleeping with a married woman? And if you brought the woman to your shul office to fool around, would UOJ still get mad and consider that "sleeping"?

Dina D'Malchuta Dina....If a woman is married legally....she can not get married again. Which simply means:

1-The kiddushin never happened and the rabbi facilitated an illicit relationship.
2- R' Moshe was very clear that a rabbi must never perform a marriage ceremony until the legal divorce was final.
3-The second husband was duped by the woman and the rabbi.
4-The husband is outraged and wants an anullment.
5-The rabbi is tripping over himself how to lie, rather than to admit he was dead wrong in performing this ceremony.

auto report world editors queries: "What criminal act is there for her to have a religious marriage ceremony before her civil divorce is final?

In New York it is a crime-a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year imprisonment for a clergy to "solemnize a marriage without a license (which would never be issued if the party is still civilly married).

Section 17 of the New York Domestic Relations Law follows:

17. Clergyman or officer violating article; penalty

If any clergyman or other person authorized by the laws of this state to
perform marriage ceremonies shall solemnize or presume to solemnize any
marriage between any parties without a license being presented to him or them
as herein provided or with knowledge that either party is legally incompetent
to contract matrimony as is provided for in this article he shall be guilty of

UOJ,

You should have written,

"...while the woman was committing ADULTERY in the eyes of the law of the United States of America."

In New York State, adultery is a crime, a misdemeanor, though rarely if ever enforced. Adultery is also a ground for a divorce.

Bigamy, defined as being married to more than one spouse at the same time, is also a crime, but I've never heard of a bigamy prosecution based on a combination of a state-sanctioned civil marriage and a religious-only marriage. To the contrary, this combination goes on all the time in Utah, where the Mormons practice this type of arrangement, and they get left alone by the State Government (with the exception of underage and/or coerced relationships).

More to the point, without knowing more, it sounds like the rabbi involved in this episode was trying to right some injustice. Perhaps the woman had a get, but the civil divorce was still languishing, because of her husband's financial machinations - but she wanted to remarry. Then, in the civil divorce case, where the husband perhaps was trying to establish adultery, the rabbi denied he did the ceremony, because he didn't want to get prosecuted under the clergy misdemeanor law cited above.

Before the lives of some decent people get ruined, perhaps you should consult with the other side of the story.

"I can't imagine liberal judges in NY or the Left Coast imposing jail time for a misdemeanor. Even if the DA makes it his pet peeve, you'll be lucky if the $50 fine gets imposed"

And therefore it's acceptable? I'm curious, and I'd love to see in print, "shitos" that allow violation of civil law, so long as "the authorities don't enforce it."

As I do with ALL my stories( I have NOT been wrong yet) I investigated this one thoroughly!

The woman was desperate to marry the new husband before he changed his mind. The civil divorce was NOT granted at that point in time.

There were NO shenanigans, the first husband was thrilled to get rid of her!

It's a rosh yeshiva who thinks that American bochurim are shkotzim if they don't act like kedoshei elyon of pre-war Europe. In his yeshiva, everything was off limits, even if the Mishna Brura said it's mutter. Despite his bekius in Shas and poskim I always felt this rosh yeshiva was a very small minded man who drove bochurim away from learning with his rigidness.

Rabbis Aryeh Ralbag, Haim Kraus, Hersh Meir Ginsberg, Elimelech Zalman Lebowitz, and Solomon B. Herbst vehemently deny Sieger’s charges. Well-known Washington, D.C., attorney Nathan Lewin, who has litigated many highly charged cases involving Orthodox Judaism, is handling their defense with a bare-knuckles bravado that seems to indicate a personal passion for the case. (Herbst is represented by Louis Tratner.)

“She’s managed to mislead and bamboozle everybody with her stories,” says Lewin, a compact man with white hair and a trim white beard, whose fees for defending the rabbis are being paid, in large part, by Chaim Sieger.

Chayie Sieger’s response is succinct: “Nat Lewin would represent a monkey, as long as it’s male and has a beard.”

- Ralbag runs a questionable hashgocho, Triangle K

- Hersh Ginsberg runs the Agudas Haganovim and supports Mordechai Tendler

- Is Lebowitz the rov from L & 36th that got divorced?

- Is Kraus that belligerent jerk that used to live by 9th Ave?

Davidi's relative was stealing cash from bochurim in the dorm. So that this loser's father wouldn't get offended, the menahel made half the yeshiva take a lie detector test. The menahel approached me and asked if I was willing to take the test, explaining that I was not under any suspicion but that he needed warm bodies so that the few suspects won't complain of selective harrassment. I was a young and naive freshman in high school so I agreed. When I found out what was really going on, I was furious. The ganav had been caught already year after year stealing but the whole yeshiva had to be inconvenienced out of deference to the powerful father. The ganav was left to be and if anyone made a comment to him or about him - THEY were disciplined for talking about it. The menahel by the way was written about here last year for his physically abusive exploits. The other ganav in the dorm wasn't even made to take the test even though there were signs that he was stealing. His father is also somewhat powerful. He came in the middle of the zman from Adelphia. The yeshiva later found out that he was one of the guys booted by Rabbi Trenk for going to a whore house. Even after finding this out, they let him stay. The ganav and zona patronizer needed money that his rabbi father wouldn't provide, so he stole it from us. Ganav #2 was thrown out of his house after he hit his sister. He went off the derech and is today a Conservative rabbi. The father of ganav #1 also taught in the yeshiva. He was also physically abusive, but not dangerously so like the menahel. There is one famous story where he started coming at a bochur who was a big guy. He backed off after the bochur warned him that he would smash a computer over his head.

I was battling rabbinical fraud and corruption before I took to the Internet. It is pervasive. All I did was use the God given tools of modern technology and use it to all of our advantage. I have not exploited it or used it for my personal gain or advantage. It would be fair to say that the amount I spent on various different issues because of being UOJ is well into the six figures.

I spoke to this particular rabbi twice. He told me and was proud of his chachmot, how exactly he was going to distort the truth.

I explained to him that the husband was deceived and lied to, emotionally and financially raped by his charlatan wife, and needed him to tell the truth, that's it.

I strongly urged him to just tell the truth. I suspected strongly that he did not intend to. His foibles were ALL he was concerned about.

HUSBANDS GET RAPED AS WELL NOT ONLY WIVES!

I know it's not politically correct to say that; that why I proudly call myself unorthodox.

Agreed that Libby was the fall guy. Point of reference is that he knowingly lied and perjured himself.

The case stinks. Fitzgerald gave a pass to Armitage who was the real leaker. I'm not convinced that Libby knowingly lied. The reporters couldn't remember stuff. The jurors couldn't remember stuff (as indicated by their notes to the judge). But Libby is supposed to have remembered everything.

The tragedy here is that Wilson and Plame's politics trumped the security of the United States. We have an out of control "permanent government" in Washington, peopled by partisans who, regardless of the administration, pursue their own policy objectives. This was first noticeable in the State Department, which seems to be more tied in to foreign diplomats and countries than to the US administration and Americans. Now, the intelligence apparatus has the same problem, and DOJ has some issues too.

I don't have a problem with whistleblowers. But these aren't whistleblowers, they are partisans who disagree with their boss, the president.

This is all very perilous for a democracy.

A good friend of mine was a mashgiach t'midi at an edible oils and rendering plant. They needed constant supervision because the plant processed both vegetable and animal oils. When my friend noticed a heated tanker truck (animal fats need to be heated to keep from congealing) being filled with vegetable oil and shipped to Frito Lay without first being steam cleaned, he called up Rabbi Ralbag, who provides hashgacha for Frito Lay. Ralbag first claimed that it was okay due to 'batal b'shishim'. When my friend pointed out that that leniency has to do with b'dieved situations, not something known from beforehand, Ralbag called him a chutzpan and hung up.

Angry driver tries to run over police officer

Presse Canadienne

Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Montreal police are investigating an incident that occured in Cote des Neiges early Sunday morning, in which a police officer was nearly deliberately run over by a car.

A female police officer was assigned to keep watch over a large group of young people who were crossing Vimy St. after what witnesses said was a gathering of Hassidic Jews.

Spotting two men who seemed to be drunk, she approached them and tried to give them a ticket, Sgt. Ian Lafreniere said. Another man then intervened, ordered the two not to talk to the police officer, and took a photograph of the officer.

After she asked the group to move along, the suspect got into a car and tried to run the officer over, Lafreniere said. She escaped uninjured, while the man fled back in the building.

When other police officers arrived for backup, they searched the building but could not locate the suspect in the crowd. It was difficult to identify the man because everyone in the room was wearing similar clothing, Lafreniere said.

The suspect is still at large, Lafreniere said. If located, he could face charges of armed assault, for trying to run over the officer, and intimidation, because he took a photograph of the officer.

The things on that site also seem much more radical than what Rabbi Abadi himself has been known to be matir. Unless I find out more information, I don't trust that website. You have to get a kick though out of all these people who latch on to the heterim of even the father himself. Sure, they love to indulge in treif chewing gum and use a bar of soap on Shabbes, but they selectively leave out his chumros, like taking their own toveled silverware to simcha halls. This kind of picking and choosing is specifically forbidden in halacha.

One more thing to make a mental note of. Do you think that Marc Penner's modern group has an agenda to be more farfrummed than they have to be? It's just another reason to doubt the Abadi kids if they argue with Young Israel of Holliswood.

Outremont man could be charged with assaulting cop
Reportedly tried to hit her with car

KAZI STASTNA
The Gazette

Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Police are investigating an incident in an Orthodox Jewish neighbourhood in Cote des Neiges early Sunday in which they allege a man tried to run his car into a female officer and took a photograph of her giving a ticket to two drunken revellers.

The man, who had not been arrested yesterday, could face charges of assault with a weapon and intimidation, police said.

Montreal police were called to de Vimy Ave., north of Van Horne Ave., shortly before 1 a.m. by neighbours complaining of people setting off firecrackers to celebrate the Purim holiday. The officers closed off the street to maintain order and remained on the scene to keep an eye on partygoers, Sgt. Ian Lafreniere said.

Police said one officer stopped two young men who were highly intoxicated and jaywalking. While she was giving them a ticket for public drunkenness and not crossing at the intersection, a man in his 50s came up, took a photo of the officer, and told the men they did not have to identify themselves and were free to leave.

He then got into a vehicle. As the officer stood behind the car, writing the licence-plate number, he backed up the car toward her, police said. She jumped out of the way, then went to the front of the car. At that point the man made a second move in her direction, then drove off, Lafreniere said. The officer was unharmed.

"We believe there was an intention" to drive into the woman, Lafreniere said.

The man parked the car in the driveway of a nearby house where a party with about 50 people was going on. He went inside.

The officer could not pick out the man from among the similarly dressed people inside, police said. Investigators later traced the owner of the car; he was not the man driving the vehicle, but he owns the house where the party was taking place.

This is an interesting concept. But do you really think that a corrupt clergyman is really any more immoral than a corrupt lay person?

To be sure, we need honest leaders, but we can't blame our own personal corruption on corrupt leaders. Yes, the leaders have to set an example but we aren't robotic sheep. We have our own free will.

Perhaps the worst part of clergy corruption is that it gives all of us an 'excuse' for our own moral failings.

It was a serious question. I need to be a better person. Are my sins any less sins than Yudi Kolko's? [note: I didn't say "lesser"]

Like the Yiddish saying goes, fish rot from the head, but just because the fish head stinks doesn't mean that I smell like a daisy.

The problem with focusing on bad guys (which is needed, and I'm sure you understand that I'm on your side) is that it allows us to focus on someone else and ignore our own flaws.

And no, I'm not saying that we should ignore communal pathologies and work only on ourselves.

The goyim have a phrase, there but for the grace of God go I. In the case of Christianity it flows from the concept that people are inherently sinners, but I think there are Jewish sources that can be used to come to a similar conclusion to "there but..." . The trial by ordeal of a Sotah is an example.

Yes, get rid of the miscreants, but recognize that without appropriate behaviors we can end up being one of those miscreants.

We are all potential giants and aich naflu giborim can apply to all of us.

I'm not trying to argue or fight here. I just think it's a worthwhile topic of discussion.

Auto Report World Editors said...

“We cannot tolerate perjury,” he said.

This is rich coming from a prosecutor who essentially created the perjury. This isn't an isolated case.

When a high profile investigation and prosecutor comes up with no criminal act to prosecute, the investigators will essentially create the crime of perjury or lying to investigators by getting the accused to contradict themselves.

They say a clever prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, but this whole case is one big nothingburger.

Martha Stewart wasn't prosecuted for insider trading, she was prosecuted for lying to investigators. The lie? That she was innocent.

The Duke lacrosse non-rape is another example of how prosecutors game the system for personal benefit.

And Joe Wilson just signed a multi million dollar contract to do "news analysis" for one of the major networks.

Yeah, this is about justice. Right.

No. As a matter of fact, very few of government or military trademarks are protected. Almost all federal gov't marks are in the public domain. The NYPD and NYFD own their marks and started enforcing them after 9/11, but as far as I know federal agencies don't.

It isn't a gov't mark, but in '04 I did some Hebrew and Arabic versions of the Bush/Cheney '04 logo. Though volunteering with Jews For George my son and I got some VIP passes to a campaign rally. Scary how the story of Purim also involves the forceful cohabitation the king had with Esther. It is more than coincidence that this daf was to be learned on Purim.

One can come up with any number of possible explanations that the "Scholar" cannot refute. What was stopping later Persian monarchies from completely obliterating a mention of Jews in power? Even in the time of Esther, a son of Haman was the royal archivist who tried to erase the record of Mordechai's stopping the murder conspiracy against the King.

The poskim discuss Esther's situation and offer that either she was forced as karka oylam or had a golem double.

Since contemporary documents are not necessarily reliable, we are left to find physical archaeological evidence, something not very likely.

bible scholar, I am the original poster of the Daf Yomi thing and if u will stop with the derisive stuff u are resorting to we can perhaps have an intelligent discussion without insulting name implications and the likes.

If u are genuinely interested in a poin by point give and take why dont u indicate as such and let the honest debate begin.

If I was the moderator of this debate, strictly based on debating skills,

I'm a bit mystified why you didn't pass through my post about punctuated equilibrium and biblical scholarship credentials.

The material on evolution spoke directly to the idea of history without physical evidence.

As for ridicule, I wasn't ridiculing him but he was completely bluffing and bullshitting when he associated punctuated equilibrium and Stephen Gould with Pascal's Wager. He had no idea what he was talking about. I think that speaks to his credibility. To further address his credibility I asked him to identify some bible scholars of note.

I studied with real bible scholars and world famous archaeologists, and while I disagree with them on many points (one of my professors was a shmadded Jew), at least they were true bible scholars, at least in an academic sense. Bible Scholar is no bible scholar.

Or maybe it's just a spoof. After all, his initials are BS.

He did not resort to name calling, he stuck to the facts.

The poster who linked to Gil Student's post on the historicity of the Book of Esther at AishDas did exactly that. While it didn't directly address Esther herself, it did discuss Mordechai/Mardukka and the general agreement of the Megillah with what is known about Persia and Xerxes.

BS ignored it. That hardly wins any points in a debate.

UOJ, what part of "ignorant" isn't name calling?

Besides, if he was a true bible scholar he wouldn't have conflated myth with fairy tales. Nobody has based a religion on the big bad wolf as of yet.

I'm still waiting for his response to Gil Student's post on the historicity of the Megillah.

Margo had nothing to lose by getting rid of Kolko years ago, he's just a rosho for the hell of it. The French might be ridiculed for cheese eating and body odor but the Hungarians are NUTS.

Read the scholars first post after my Daf Yomi thing started this and u will see that scholar clearly alluded to Esther being a whore.

What is that UOJ if not name calling?

I'm still waiting to see if scholar can take me up on the offer to debate line by line. I gave him the oppurtunity to come clean and discuss unbiased facts. Now this seems to have degenerated into a mud slinging thing so I'm bowing out. Just a parting thought... What about the huge ancient tombs of Mordechai and Esther that are in modern day Iran and is refered to as such by Jew and Muslim alike? Aint no 3 piggies in there last time I checked.

Besides, did u take a look at the blatt gemorah I mentioned, UOJ?

P.S. I'm getting very uneasy with the heretics article u put up some weeks ago and now this. Are these your ultimate goals? I asked u to clarify your position last time and u did. But siding with a unscholarly scholar who started the name calling in response to my harmless post is disturbing when u laud him for exactly the virtues which he has shown he lacks..

Auto Report World Editors said...

I think the Megillah is fascinating in terms of male/female dynamics.

You have a husband wanting to show off his naked wife to his buddies and she rebels. Maybe Achashverosh was a "sharer" or "watcher" and latently homoerotic.

You have Mordechai chastising Esther for thinking only about herself.

And then there is Zeresh. How typical is that of some married woman! She encourages Haman to go after Mordechai when things are going well, but at the first sign of reversal she starts calling him a loser. You can almost hear he tell him, "I should have married Abagtha".

The Un-Orthodox Jew - "UOJ" said...

Hey Scholar where are you?

I know that gemorah well, interesting "derher".

Truth be told I always had a problem with Mordecai using Esther in that way. According to medrash, she could have been Mordecai's wife.

Anonymous said...

As a victim of rabbinic molestation I am very attuned to victims and looking at the story of the megilah through the eyes of the gemara in Meseches Megilah, that devotes many pages to the story itself, I have no problem with Mordechai and don't see him using Esther. Care to elaborate on specific problems u have with it or should we refrain from getting sidetracked from the intent of this site?

The Un-Orthodox Jew - "UOJ" said...

Anon, 4:58,

I respect our differences. In a nutshell, I'm not a literalist. My parents tell me before I said Mama, I asked WHY?

I spent an enormous amount of time learning and studying. I gave a daf for many years, completed shas (Talmud) three times with Rashi and Tosefos.

The more I learned and studied, the more I realized that the literal translation of many texts, can not be accurate literally.

I chose metaphorics and allegory as a substitute, or I can't remain frum.

My intent is to better our religion, demand more from our leaders, and expect no compromise on emes.

Child molestation and enabling the crime, and then covering it up, is vicious and distorts our Torah.

Those "leaders" must be removed for Judaism to have any integrity.

I'd rather believe the Esther story not true, than to believe that Mordecai gave Esther to a king's harem.

Auto Report World Editors said...

As I see it, it's mostly problematic because of the viewpoint that M & E were husband and wife. Sending his adopted niece to the harem might appear unsavory but it isn't sending your wife off to sleep with the king.

Frankly I don't know why "k'bat" is darshaned as "k'bayit". It just opens up a Pandora's box vis a vis adultery and yaharog v'al ya'avor, and then chazal have to jump through hoops to portray Esther's behavior as pristine.

UOJ, I assume you have no problem with the shita that a goylem was sent to bed with Melech A? There were surely enough bekiyim around in those days in Sefer Yetzira that they could make it happen.

Ronnie also missed a point there with his list of "desperate housewives". The Megilla speaks of Zeresh vechol oyhavav. The Midrash says they were a group of swingers just hanging out to have sex.

I'm pricing it at $18.00 retail with 10% going to tzedakah. Payments accepted via Paypal including plastic. (If PM wants to set me up with a free merchant account, great. In lieu of that I'll continue to use Paypal). I'll contact Rebbitzen Schwab in the morning. She operates a gemach and is the closest thing to a tomchei shabbas that I know about here in town. If that doesn't pan out, the 10% will go to Yad Ezra, the local kosher food pantry, a 501c3 non-profit.

Have the Baltimore guy contact me at autothreads@sbcglobal.net about large quantities.

Let me know if I should mock up a display ad for the blog homepage, specifically what pixel size.

Thanks for letting me do this. Nothing wrong with making an honest living.

UOJ,

I could remember nowhere in the Megillah, aggadata or meforshim where Mordechai "gave" Esther to the harem. The only other place I've heard this is from an official in the Conservative movement. It's clear that Esther was taken against her will. I spent a good part of last night discussing this with talmidei chochomim. The only time that Mordechai facilitated anything was at the end to plead against the gezairas Haman. I'm told R' Nosson Wachtfogel has a lengthy shtickel Torah to explain it. Bekitzur nimratz, since Esther had to go anyway in 30 days, there was no issur and even a chiyuv to go earlier for pikuach nefesh of the gantze klal. The only taynos on Mordechai were that he was osek to much with the malchus and was mevatel from learning. There is a dikduk on groyse mentchen kechut hasaara and any other tayna would have been mentioned eons ago. It's pretty specious for anyone to come along in 2007 and find a new fault. COnsider that perhaps you are so outraged by corruption and sheker that you sometimes think you see it where it doesn't exist.

I think Yeshivishe nudnik refuted u in a most eloquent and respectful manner. Your charges at Mordechai HaTzaddik are baseless and impossible to corroborate. I think u aught come clean in public right here or show us your cards. A statement such as the one u made about the authenticity of the megilah story refutes and contradicts your defensive statement that "My intent is NOT to denigrate our religion; certain things are best left unsaid."

You stated something (in support of scholar)of ultimate apikorses at worst or misguided thought at best and as u stated countless times, nobody can claim infallability and apologies are a virtue. If your statement cannot be proven than your attack was unwarranted and should be rescinded.

I learned alot from u and recieved great words of comfort from you privately and would like to maintain the high regard I now have for u. It is for this concern that I hold you so accountable for every statement u make. Please set the record on this so we may move on to the issues of the day.

Nudnik & Friend,

To answer your kushya with another; if a person is faced with a choice of picking one out of two people to be killed, is one permitted to choose that person?

Mordecai l'fi all shitos "turned Esther in" to the melech, knowing full-well what was coming. Of course he could have waited until they "picked her up".

If Mordecai was indeed married to her, (which could very well be the case) he was m'chuyev to protect her from being "boel" by the king and hide her, not turn her over.

I do not want to get sidetracked here, gilu arayos(if she was married) is y'harog v'al yaavor.

One man's opinion.
